Remember, remember... something What is November? Sure, the first couple of days are all about judging the neighbours (or being judged) for not binning that rapidly decomposing pumpkin outside the front door, followed by the whizzes and bangs of the 5th, but what is November after that? As we enter the time of year when months and weeks and days are synonymous with festivities and celebrations, we were a bit worried that 6th- 30th November would be left out. Fortunately, just before we started thinking about what we have to be thankful for, so as to fully commit to America’s Thanksgiving at the end of the month, we remembered that we live in York. There is no such thing as down-time in this city, as every bit of the calendar is crammed with fun. If you were hoping for a quiet month, to mope around perfecting your bah humbugs for

December, you’re out of luck, Ebenezer. Non-Guy Fawkes, non-Christmas event highlights include The Aesthetica Short Film Festival and The Festival of Remembrance, while in the mag we have part three of the non-festive Treasure Hunt for you to complete, as well as a special feature celebrating Living Wage Week. Also, as a non-denominational, non-season specific gift to you, this magazine comes with two free staples for you to prise out and keep. Merry Staplemas! But, just in case you haven’t flipped open this issue until after it has been languishing in the magazine rack for three weeks… Merry Christmas! Check out all our jolly event listings to plan your Chrimbo with style. Enjoy your staples and we’ll see you next month!

Mash-up month! This month is a great mix of lots of different things, catching the tale-end of Halloween, blasting through Bonfire Night, and gearing up for Christmas. That’s why the cover image, featuring the Sci-Fi and history visual meld of Kaboom, is so apt. Seriously though, imagine Guy Fawkes in the Back to the Future DeLorean. Awesome.

What we’ve learnt this issue … High heels and Whitby don’t mix

Whitby and fish and chips… yes. Whitby and Dracula… yes. Whitby and desperately looking for a parking space while the kids disappointedly look at the sea and whine ‘Where’s the beach?’…yes. However, Whitby and high heels... oh no. This sales rep Ellen learnt the hard way, after tackling the heavily cobbled streets of the seaside town in high heels. Next month Avril will be taking on Scarborough in roller blades. Possibly.

If it ain’t broke…

Yes, we’re slowly filling in the gaps, and what might have been a field a few years ago is now probably a new housing estate (or Starbucks, or Wagamamas), but at least York’s growth has been consistent with the original layout of the city. Most of the roads in the centre have been there for centuries, and will no doubt continue to remain for many centuries more. Howard was reminded of that fact this month after a trip back to his “home town” of Doncaster. Our writer was startled to discover that good old Donny had mostly been enveloped by a shopping centre, turning what were once places filled with childhood memories into the underwear section of a giant Debenhams. As ever, he was more than a little relieved to get back to York.

Tony gets better each year

Your thoughts might only just be with Halloween and Bonfire Night, but friend of the mag (and expert local artist) Tony Brook already has next year planned out for you. Tony’s ever popular calendar is back, now in its fifth year, to depict the city of York in 12 beautifully created handpainted images. Be sure to snap yours up soon – they tend to go like hot cakes. Lampposts are evil

This month Dani learnt that Europe’s second biggest accidental killers are lampposts, with around 8000 people dying each year by walking into them. Apparently, so Dani discovered, the first biggest accidental way to die is to fall down an open manhole. If you’re reading this while walking along the street OH MY GOD LOOK UP! LOOK WHERE YOU’RE GOING!!!

Chinese toilets are weird

This month our design apprentice Hannah was in China, trekking along the Great Wall with pop band Union J to raise money for charity. And the most important piece of news she brought back from this amazing, life-changing experience? Chinese toilets are different to ours. Apparently, so Hannah detailed, they don’t use actual sit-down toilets, but rather just… ‘go’… in a hole in the ground, popping used toilet paper in a bin. She even provided this photo. We’ve yet to see any pictures of the Great Wall…

After recently sending out an e-shot to everyone on our mailing list, describing how easy it is to upload your own events to our website, we were bowled over by the sheer amount of stuff going on. On the first day alone there were dozens of events uploaded to our site (www. yourlocallink.co.uk) proving that lots of people have lots of things to shout about. Mars is a refreshing place

A couple of issues ago we enthused about the giant love heart discovered on the surface of Pluto, suggesting we daub XOXO on the Sahara desert in reply. But now it seems that flowing liquid water has been discovered on Mars, prompting the question... when can we get some? Delicious bottled Mars spring water would go down a storm, especially if confectionery giant Mars get the rights. We're currently writing a letter to the Harrogate Spa water people, urging them to immediately send a tanker to Mars. We'll let you know.

and life in general

as seen by Rachel Ragg

As I have arthritis in both hips (further proof that I am an old witch, lest my children need this to be confirmed), I am currently unable to walk. As I am used to walking eight miles every day with children and a dog, this is not good news. And so I have invested in a bike. It is a while since I rode a bike. About 25 years, to be precise. How glad I am to have rediscovered this! I think, as I sail down the hill across the racecourse in the sunshine. Yes, I may be in constant terror of being knocked off by one of those hissing Park and Ride buses - but so long as I don’t think about that, it’s a revelation. So much so that I feel the need to cycle to the Bar Convent for coffee and cake. Life is good, I think, as I reach the Bar

Convent without mishap. I dismount. Only I don’t. My feet are on the ground, but I’m not going anywhere. Why can’t I move? Then I realise. My oh-so-practical

cycling coat (calf-length, waterproof, zip-up) is trapped between the rear brake pad and the tyre. Hmm, I think, giving it a tug. It remains stubbornly caught. But I was once a Girl Guide, so I have a plan. I will forsake my cake, take my coat off, roll it up, trap it on the rear parcel rack, and wheel the bike home. It might be a bit chilly, but

that’s not the end of the world. Removing a coat while attached to a bike is not easy. However, it’s not impossible. Yet I still can’t move. And then I realise: my nice woollen skirt is trapped too. Surely I can push my bike home while umbilically attached to it by my skirt? Only I can’t. The coat and skirt are so severely trapped that the wheel refuses to turn. If I want to get home, I am going to have to undress. Outside the nunnery. If I take my skirt off, nobody will notice, right? After all, we are on the corner of Micklegate, where semi-nakedness is not uncommon. And so, pretending that it’s something I do every morning, I perform an

acrobatic strip, all the while being grateful for the thermal leggings that I almost forgot to wear. And then it starts to rain. At this point, I do what all selfrespecting women do. I ring a man. “I think I need your help,” I say ohso-casually. “Humph,” the Man replies. It is not a good idea to detach a man from his Daily Telegraph at 9am. “Yes,” I say. “I seem to be trapped in my bike wheel.”

beside me. One elderly chap realises what has happened, and chortles at me. As he is walking his ferret, I really don’t think he ought to be chortling at anyone. Fortunately the teenagers swarming out of Blossom Street Sainsbury’s are so absorbed in themselves and their breakfasts of Red Bull and Haribo that they don’t even notice a bedraggled middle-aged mother attached to a bike wheel. And the bouncers on the door of the Punchbowl have

Eventually my knight in shining armour (man in flat cap) arrives on his white charger (the Number 13 to Haxby). “Ho, ho,” he says. “I think I might leave you there all day.” But, of course, he doesn’t. He dismantles the bike, detaches me, and puts the bike back together again. And as I cycle home with my nice woolly skirt tucked into my leggings and my long coat safely knotted around my middle, I remember that men can sometimes come in useful after all.

Silence. Then laughter. Lots of it. “And you presumably want me to rescue you?” “Yes. Yes, I make a habit of standing here enjoying the view. Particularly when it’s raining and my clothes are huddled up on the ground

Star sign of the month • Star sign of the month • Star sign of the month • Star sign of the month • Star sign of the month A frustrating month caused by the inconsistency of other peoples’ words and actions. When someone says one thing, then does another, this will tend to rock your boat rather than float it. I guess you’ve got two choices here – you can either lay down the law and demand that other people do as they have pledged and promised, or you could say “sod off” and do what needs to be done yourself without worrying too much about what other people might think or say. Either of these options will shake things up a bit, and neither of these

options is detrimental to you in any way. New friends and worthwhile contacts will be made between the 13th and the 21st – and this is particularly true for independent ladies with minds of their own. Travel aspects look okay for some time during the last week (although I wouldn’t think that most of you will be travelling very far afield) and some of you will be giving some thought to possible changes of address. Overseas property may have role to play in the lives of the lucky few.

long term advantage, but be sure not to let anyone take you too much for granted. Strong domestic situations provide you with an unusual degree of security and satisfaction.

23rd NOV-22nd dec

A strong feeling of satisfaction as a long term project comes to a successful completion. Social outlook very bright throughout the whole of the month, perhaps with the accent on entertaining at home. A strong feeling of bonding and unity with a lover or partner, but perhaps a minor problem to be dealt with concerning a teen or younger family member.

PISCES

19th feb-19th mar

Moving on from the month of October, November brings new challenges both on the work scene and at home. You will rise to these challenges, surprising not only some key players around you, but also surprising yourself! There is a strong romantic and sexual energy with you

that could bring about some radical change and improvement in your love life.

ARIES

20th mar - 19th apr

Rather than waiting for any kind of invitation, be it to a party or to a romantic tryst, why not make a few invitations of your own? This will speed things along, and there are some sexy social vibes peaking on the 8th/9th and 20th/21st. Finances seem okay, but not much room for splashing out on luxuries.

20th apr - 21st may

Well, it’s November, and with the onset of winter you may find your spirits are rather low. You need to combat this by being active, both physically and mentally. It doesn’t really matter what you do as long as you do something! Artistic Taureans find new inspiration around the 17th. None artistic Taureans may have to wait until the 28th.

GEMINI

22nd may - 21st jun

A much calmer month emotionally as someone of the opposite sex makes great efforts to meet you more than half way. However, there’s nothing to be gained here if you yourself cannot make a few small compromises in affairs of the heart. Some measurable improvement to finances on or around the 20th.

CANCER

23rd Oct-22nd Nov

A very important month for learning that there are certain things from your past that you cannot take with you into your future. For once, you’ll be willing to get rid of a lot of dead wood to make way for new growth. This underpins a quiet mood of optimism and determination, helped no end by a partner working hard to prove they’re worthy of your love.

LEO

22nd jun - 23rd july

Despite the cold outside, you’ll be feeling very warm on the inside as a number of critical situations start falling into place – not least of which concerns the long term future of a key relationship. A romantic month? Yes by all means! More importantly it is a period for laying the foundation stones of your long term emotional welfare.

TAURUS

An encouraging month financially, with specific gains made between the 5th and the 7th and then again on or around the 25th. There could be an important reunion in the second week, and if nothing else, a member of the opposite sex will be working hard to get “close” to you! Jobs and careers dominate your thinking during the latter days of the month.

A lot of restrictions which have held you back and have hindered your progress, now seem to be slackening off, giving you both the confidence and the opportunity to act a little more spontaneously in pursuit of your goals. A lot of encouragement from a lover or partner, but not everyone will be pleased with some of your decisions.

Got a problem?

h Run around Sue

Of course you have.

I love my wife very much, but she’s currently training for a marathon and has become a fitness freak. In fact, she’s so excited about having caught the running bug, that she’s determined to pass it on to me, too. However, I have absolutely zero interest in becoming a runner. My wife doesn’t seem about to give up her efforts, though. How can I stop this torture? Andrew, Huntington

Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.

Dear

e n h p a D h Freaky Friday In my office, we all take part in dress down Friday each week. I am always well-presented and usually go for a nice pair of designer jeans and a top, as do most of my colleagues. However, one of my workmates comes in wearing jogging bottoms and old, baggy t-shirts that look horrible. She doesn’t have to work with customers, but I still think that she should make a bit of an effort. How can I tell her without her thinking I’m being mean? Sandra, Strensall I hate to break it to you Sandra, but a teensy weensy part of me suspects that you are actually just being mean. It’s almost as if (and this is a crazy idea, but bear with me) dress down Friday is actually just an excuse for you all to show off your best clobber. Though you may ‘always be well-presented’ (ooh, get you), we’re not all perfect specimens of feminine beauty, my dear. Believe it or not, some of us just don’t care about putting outfits together. I know! Shocking! I actually happen to think that your colleague is a hero for refusing to become yet another cardboard cutout Stepford wife. Why not try on some jogging bottoms yourself and see what you’re missing?

18

Oh, Andrew. I feel for you, I really do. I had a friend once who tried on several occasions to get me to attend a spinning class with her. Note the fact that I said ‘had’ there – our friendship didn’t last long after that ordeal. However, seeing as you’re married to this woman I expect that never speaking to her again isn’t really an option. In that case, I recommend that you take up a ‘hobby’ of your own – one that involves something that sounds complicated so that you can make up believable excuses for not going out for a run. Think: “sorry dear, I really need to take the bees out for a walk tonight,” or “if I don’t rebottle the homebrewed strawberry cider right now, the whole house might explode,” (which may be a real thing that happens, I don’t know). Sure, becoming a beekeeper or setting up a brewery might seem extreme, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

h Mum’s the word My mum seems to think that she’s some kind of fashionista and it’s really embarrassing. She’s just turned 50 and is still wearing mini-skirts and knee high boots – sometimes together. I hate having to be seen with her, especially when she’s in one of her leopard-print numbers. How can I tell her that she needs to start acting her age? Katie, Haxby I think the only person who needs to start acting their age is you, my dear. The sooner you stop behaving like a spoiled child, the better. Speaking as a lady of a certain age, let me tell you that wearing mini-skirts doesn’t become any less fun the older you get. And we all know that everyone looks fabulous in leopard-print. In fact, if anything, it sounds like you should probably take some fashion tips from your mum. My favourite aunt used to dye her hair bright pink well into her seventies, much to the chagrin of her children. Everyone else thought that she look ace, though. So the likelihood is that you’re the odd one out in this situation. And if you’re as intent as following the crowd as you seem, you’ll surely want to change your opinion…

h paperless I’ve been struggling with my house mates recently; they constantly use the entire loo roll and never replace it. How do I broach the subject sensitively? LOUISE, FULFORD I completely sympathise here, it’s unacceptable not to change the loo roll when it is finished. Hide all of your toilet roll from them. Seriously: all of it. I’d also recommend leaving passive aggressive notes on empty cardboard rolls such as: ‘Would’ve been nice if someone had replaced this wouldn’t it?’ or ‘Have you considered buying a pack of loo roll’. Good luck. If that doesn’t work you could mention it to them like a grownup would - Just a suggestion.

york life Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing.

Thi s m o n t h : LAM e l h i l l York is so jam-packed with history that even the lumps and bumps in the ground are significant. One such lump, located just south of Heslington Road and within the grounds of The Retreat, is Lamel Hill... and you’d be forgiven for not even realising it exists. Yet, this plain-looking bump of grass has quite a tale to tell, and many more mysteries to be discovered. Pop into the grounds of the mental heath care hospital The Retreat these days, and what is known as Lamel Hill is actually the apex of a hill that rises up from Lawrence Street to the north, and then drops down toward Walmgate Stray on t’other side. Although today it is hidden behind the walls of The Retreat, and hemmed in by modern houses, Lamel Hill was once a favourite vantage point for artists to sit and sketch the City of York, as it provided panoramic views for miles around. But, while the likes of Turner were busily drawing away in the early

22

19th century, leaning against the windmill that sat there at that time, we’re guessing they didn’t fully appreciate the wealth of history below their feet.

God #@&% the King! As we said, the hill offered great views over the city... which is probably what the Roundheads realised when they installed a gun emplacement there during the Siege of York in the Civil War. Walmgate Bar, less than half a mile away, was

heavily bombarded from this position, while Cromwell’s cronies also received a few volleys in return from the Royalists’ guns on Baile Hill, which we’ve written about before. Although the parliamentarians had to slightly build up the top of Lamel Hill to get a better shot at the Cavaliers hiding behind their walls, the hill was still apparently very imposing prior to the siege.

Peeling back the layers As well as being known as a thorn in the bottoms of the Royalists of York, it wasn’t until 1847 that the true significance of the hill was revealed.

york life

John Thurnam, then the Medical Superintendent of The Retreat, decided to set about on his own archaeological investigation of the hill. Despite what View from the top, lo you might have oking sou th heard about the often disastrous and damaging personal endeavours of digging around historical sites from this era, Thurnam’s dig was recently described by the York Archaeological Trust as “…an exemplary excavation for the period.” During the dig Thurnam discovered a mass of skeletons and bones, all jumbled up together. Digging deeper, he found smaller burials where the remains of people had been burnt prior to burial. A later excavation in 1983, just further down the hill to the west, revealed lots more burials, including some skeletons that had been decapitated. It is believed that these remains were Anglo-Saxon, dating from a period of York’s history where not many records exist, the 5th 7th centuries. However, this discovery also opened a few more doors on the historical Advent calendar, as the Anglo-Saxons had a tendency to bury their dead on established burial sites, most notably those from before the arrival of the Romans. Therefore many believe that Lamel Hill has been a site of great importance since the Stone Age, further back than 1500 BCE!

MOVE LUCE

2

Lamel what? It might be easy to miss these days (as are many of our city’s curious lumps and bumps), but Lamel Hill is extremely significant. Take a guided tour of the city centre and you’ll hear lots about the Romans, the Vikings, and the Normans. There aren’t, however, many mentions of our history further back than 2000 years. But as Lamel Hill shows, York’s history is much richer and older than many people appreciate. And we’ve only just scratched the surface...

A eulogy for Noodle, the Spanish hunting rescue dog It is with great sadness that I’m telling you my lovely pet dog, Noodle, passed away this month. BAND: The Enemy WHERE: Fibbers WHEN: Monday 16th November INFO: The Enemy return with a new album that is less like the Enemy and a little more like music frontman, Tom, listens too. I still love we live and die in these towns, though.

Noodle was born circa 2003 in a little Spanish village called Beniali. Her first years weren't happy ones, she was kept in a small cage up in the mountains, was malnourished and covered in fleas. A friendly and soft natured dog, with a yearning for cuddles, she soon caught the attention of the Starkey family who walked past regularly. Despite her difficult start to life, Noodle was resilient and survived a

traumatic thunder storm which she was swept out of her cage in a flood.

from Spain to France, to the little village of Huby.

To the Starkey family's relief, she was finally free.

Her last years were lived in North Yorkshire where she was fed Sunday dinners every Sunday and met a partner: a German Shepard named Blue.

They nursed the small poorly dog for months, tending her wounds from the storm, feeding her regularly and battling the onslaught of fleas. Noodle never made a sound for her first year with the Starkey family, a timid dog who only approached when the coast was clear and she needed a cuddle. She travelled like few dogs ever will,

Throughout the years she grew into a loving and compassionate companion, with a sense for whenever a member of the family needed comfort. Noodle developed a fondness for long car journeys, cornflakes and chasing birds. She was a friend, a pet and a brilliant substitute for a blanket.

I fed a cat and I liked it• Fashion City York 2016 Feline fans might remember a while back that I was talking down cats. Well I am here to swallow my pride. Tickles (a cat of a friend) stared me out for a solid two minutes in the kitchen before I decided it was safe to give him a piece of cheese the other day. So I just wanted to leave a little note to say, it was ok, we bonded, I am considering stroking him at some point in the near future. Baby steps, OK. In other news the preparations have kicked off for Fashion City York 2016. I’m going to be volunteering myself and hope to see lots of other likeminded individuals doing the same. You don’t have to be a clothes shop to get involved as there’s all sorts of ways individuals and companies can get involved.

what am i? Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

“I tend to conversationally stumble” This month my wife's best friend moved back to York from Canada. This was great news for my wife, and also my daughter whose best friend is their child, but not really for me. Before you think this is because I have some kind of hatred for Canadians, it isn't; I like them, as they are basically Americans who didn't quit the thrill-fest that was the British Empire. Nuff respect. No, I've been slightly bothered by the return of my wife's bestie because it's got me thinking. That is never a good thing.

Feelings

Perhaps all husbands do this once in a while, maybe even all men. One thing I've learnt about women in the past couple of years is that they just like to talk, for talking's sake. I find that hard to comprehend, because if specific information is

My wife was overjoyed to get her friend back, which was to be expected. However, she was really happy, happier than she was during the year that her friend was in Canadaland. I've no idea what existential angst actually is, but that is definitely my problem. Because what's wrong with me? Seeing my wife instantly reconnect with her friend, as if the previous 12 months hadn't happened at all, made me consider what it is that I bring to the party.

not being conveyed, or a request for specific help with a specific problem is not asked for, I tend to conversationally stumble. There has in the past been times when my wife has raged at me for trying to solve her problems. She didn't want help and advice, she merely wanted to talk about it. This she does with her friend very successfully, to the point where they now see each other almost every day. To talk about stuff. And share feelings. Although Canada lady's return has essentially got me 'off the conversation hook', it has left me wondering what it is I actually do around here now. In the kind of exercise they would do with recovering alcoholics I have jotted down a small list of what my marital duties are. Do the washing up • Take out the rubbish • Spiders (“Kill it! Kill it! Aww, don't actually kill it!”) • Provide genes (you know what I mean)

Other than that it is difficult to define my function within the household, if (and I might be waaaaaaay off here and this column could lead to divorce) the emotional stuff is being handled by another person. When I was 12 I got a cat. Only I didn't, as the cat was actually the next door neighbours', but it preferred to spend most of its time at our house. I had great fun with it, but when it got sick, or when it needed to be neutered and have injections, the neighbours dealt with that. This is an analogy. It might not be a successful analogy, and it might actually be offensive, so I apologise now.

york life

• Daddy cuddles (for the kids. That's not a weird sexual thing my wife likes) Not a massive list, is it? Guys, what is your list like? Other than... oh wait, I've forgotten one: • Make the nice kind of coffee when my wife's best friend comes over.

I AM ANALOGY CAT I, blob

Maybe I am, in an uncharacteristic manner, over thinking it. Maybe nothing has changed other than my wife's friend returning from the colonies. Perhaps I shouldn't be considering my function, because I'm a human, a blob of slowing decaying organic matter, that is incapable of having 'functions'. A door stop has a function, as does an umbrella. Actually that one has many, such as 'emergency sword'. I'll stop worrying about it. Besides, we went halves on pizza with the Canadians the other night, so I'm already like ten quid up.

Sport report

with DAN TAIT Dan knows sport like you know the back of your hand. Each month he delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

The curse of November… Three York City managers, Billy McEwan, Colin Walker, and Chris Brass, all left during the dreaded month, and some would argue Nigel Worthington narrowly avoided the same fate by resigning just short last October. So Russ Wilcox will be saving his fireworks for after seeing out the month after enduring a split camp of York City supporters of late. Some keyboard warriors are almost happy to see the club lose, but there’s no doubt that when someone is complaining that “they missed a root canal for this”, things need to improve. I guess it didn’t help when York City’s number one set himself up for a fall with a comment of “Catch us if you can” after a reasonable pre-season. Those sort of things always come back to haunt you just like last season when I told my dad that the Minstermen would get promoted, when in reality there was more chance of a big crowd watching England’s cricketers in the UAE. Hopefully York City’s form goes in an upward curve with home fixtures to come

30

against high flying Plymouth Argyle on the Saturday 14th and Accrington two weeks later on the 28th. After a First Round bye and a victory over League One Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers, November 10th sees York City looking to reach the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Semi-Final – or in other words, two games from Wembley. However, they will have to beat last year’s conquerors in the same competition, Barnsley, to do so.

Scrumming down

the pitch given that I was in the gods blowing into an oxygen mask. I had much better tickets for what was considered one of the games of the group stages, with Scotland’s Bravehearts overcoming the impressive underdogs, Samoa. Well, I say Scotland, but on closer inspection I noticed their squad has two South Africans, two New Zealanders, a Dutchman, and a Spaniard - let alone three Englishmen - so I don’t know what they are classed as together. It felt like Trigger’s broom from Only Fools and Horses.

Onto Rugby now, and I was one of the lucky ones to get tickets to the World Cup…..and even luckier they weren’t for the England games! I managed to see New Zealand Vs. Tonga, and Scotland Vs. Samoa. Well, I think I saw the All Blacks; they were little dots on

ASK THE BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS EXPERT With Rupert Waddington

Are you CONTENT with your CONTENT? Each month I unravel another mystery of content marketing. And this month, we’re looking at the most profitable piece of content you may ever write…

Structure and rhythm: Precise positioning of prominent key words and phrases is vital. And the crescendo and climax of your Call2Action will be the clincher for the positive response you’re after.

The promotional email.

Remember: Your promotional email has just ONE opportunity to convert a lead or sale. Not only that; if you get it wrong, you can guarantee that any future promo e-mails from you will go straight into the trash!

It’s a vital sale or lead generator for many businesses. And there are plenty of people to help you set up and run your campaigns. But it is ALL a waste of effort unless you get one vital ingredient right – the words! When your target receives your email, it will be one of dozens of promo e-mails they get that day; and you can guarantee that it will arrive at the least convenient moment. That’s why most are treated as junk mail – sent straight to the trash bin unopened. But you can do better. Here are a few tips. Subject line: Spend as much time on this as the rest of the email. It’s all your recipient sees when the email is sitting in the Inbox; and it’s what makes them decide to open it - or simply press ‘delete’. Headline: If you managed to get your email opened, the first thing their eye must fall on is your headline – a strapline, sentence or even short paragraph. This must reinforce the allure or relevance of the subject line and persuade the recipient to read the rest of your email. Content: The same rules apply here as with any promotional material – it’s all about how YOU can solve THEIR problem. It’s about them, not you. Tone: Hitting the right tone is critical. Readers will abandon your email in seconds if it doesn’t resonate with them. Step into their shoes – think like they do.

This month the nation celebrates Living Wage Week, the annual reminder to encourage awareness of the Living Wage and the importance of fair pay. Here’s what you need to know. The idea for a Living Wage, an hourly rate of pay based on the actual cost of living, came out of London in 2001. The campaign was launched by parents who discovered that working a minimum wage job was not enough to make ends meet. Today, hundreds of businesses across the country have committed to be a Living Wage employer, paying their staff equal to or greater than a special hourly rate calculated by the Living Wage Foundation: £7.85 or £9.15 in London. Wage-ing war Living Wage Week, this year taking place 1st-7th November, is a great chance to both highlight the importance of having a minimum wage that represents how much it actually costs to live, and to celebrate those employers who have already committed to do just that. The Living Wage Foundation uses the week to stage events and also to release the latest data on the negative impact that low paying jobs can have on workers’

34

lives. The Living Wage recommended hourly rate, which is recalculated each year, is also announced during the week. Help your staff, reward yourself There are many benefits to becoming a Living Wage employer. 80% of the Living Wage employers questioned believed that overall productivity had risen, while reported absenteeism had fallen by 25%. But there are other benefits… • You get access to guidance on implementing the Living Wage. • You are entitled to use the Living Wage Employer mark, a logo which demonstrates your commitment to your staff. • You’ll appear on the Living Wage website, a searchable tool that consumers, prospective employees, students, and grant makers can use to see who pays the Living Wage. • You become part of a strategic network of employers and have the opportunity to work together to

promote your accreditation. Many businesses here in York have already signed up to the Living Wage. As well as big names such as Aviva, City of York Council, and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, smaller companies are also paying the Living Wage. These include… the Golden Ball Pub, The Perky Peacock, York CVS, the York Quakers, The Citizens Advice Bureau, the Diocese of York, York Housing Association, and a certain company called Your Local Link. Yeah, we’ve never heard of them either.

Your Local Living Wage That’s right; your favourite free magazine was accredited as a Living Wage employer in 2014. The

application process was remarkably simple, and the foundation got back to us with everything we needed (including those all-important window stickers) extremely quickly. Now we are listed on the Living Wage website, can use the Living Wage logo in all our promotional material, and – and this is what it’s really all about - we’re all much happier. You can’t tell, but we’re writing these words while smiling. That was the week… If you are a Living Wage employer now is the time to plan an event to coincide with Living Wage Week. The Living Wage Foundation can furnish you with an info pack, filled with ideas to get the message about your commitment out to the world. However, if you employ staff and are seriously considering becoming accredited, do it! n Find out everything you need to know at www.livingwage.org.uk or by calling 0207 0439882.

MOTORING

NEWS

Don your camo, Queenie Bentley, the luxury British car maker, recently released their latest model – the Bentayga – boasting that it is their fastest SUV yet, capable of reaching speeds of up to 187mph. After seeing the car, we’re sure that it will undoubtedly be popular with footballers, people with Kasdashian as a last name, and the 17 year old daughters of oil barons. But, so Bentley have revealed, the actual first owner of the car will be the Queen. Apparently dear old Liz plans to use the Bentayga for hunting trips in Scotland, when she dresses in camouflage, holds a knife between her teeth, and gets dropped by helicopter into the wilds of the Highlands. Seriously though, how does the Queen hunt? Perhaps she wants a fast car to chase down the fleeing stags as her butler aims a shotgun out of the sun roof.

The invisible motoring motivators Anyone dead keen on cars and motoring might have paid close attention to the many new vehicles and concept models revealed at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show. However, instead of the discussion focussing on horse power and torque, it seems most manufacturers are concerned with connectivity… and it’s all due to two non-car companies who revealed nothing. All the major car makers, especially Volkswagen, were showing off their vehicles’ software and systems as much as the look and design of the cars. It seems that since rumours started to fly that both Apple and Google were working on electric cars, the rest of the field are suddenly desperate

To infinity and beyond… on a bus Buzz Lightyear can’t have a driving license. That is the decision of the DVLA after the character from Pixar’s Toy Story films made an application. But before you wonder how a fictional plastic action figure, that can magically come to life when no children are watching, can even drive a car, you must understand that this particular Buzz is a 26 year old Brighton man. Sam Stephens officially changed his name to Buzz Lightyear after raising his goal of £2000 for a cancer charity while running the Brighton Marathon. However, since the change, which was legally done via Deed Poll, Sam has

to modernise as much as possible, afraid that any new cars from the phone and internet giants would make their gas-guzzling conventional motors obsolete. And so the show featured many new self-driving concept cars, electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, cars that can park themselves, and more software than you’d normally find at a computer show. Meanwhile, Google executives have commented that they have no plans to become a car manufacturer, while Apple remain silent. Just goes to show how the computer nerds can influence the world by doing nothing. Thing is, if Apple do make a car, you’ll have to keep buying the latest model every six months.

had a bit of bother. First, after signing up for his local football team, he was fined by the FA for the “gross misconduct” of using a silly name, and now the DVLA think that giving a fictional character a license will portray them in a bad light. Poor Sa… we mean, poor Buzz.

Rolling through rock history

For sale: one used Bentley S3 Continental. Previous owner drove it to Marrakech with a supermodel while high on drugs. Seats have been thoroughly scrubbed. Would you make an offer on that? Perhaps you might when you realise that the previous owner was Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used the car for a massive 1800 mile drug-fuelled road trip with model Anita Pallenberg in 1967. That bit of information certainly motivated the eventual buyer at Bonhams

Goodwood Revival auction, who paid a whopping £763,100 for the Bentley, a car Richards modified to include a secret compartment for narcotics. The journey in “Blue Lena”, as Richards nicknamed it in 1965, was where he and Pallenberg began a relationship which lasted, after having three children, until 1980. That is a lot to pay for a car, but we suppose the hidden drug compartment could be used to keep travel sweets and mints.

Design Demystified by Becs.

s e l i F e l y t S The

uncovering your inner style Part of the fun about style is really taking time to discover what yours is (whether conventional or not), so we need to go and do a little exploring…. Firstly, Be on the lookout:

Following last months article on the concept of “Style” I had some really interesting responses on what style means to you. Here are just a few :

ed and copied… Trends can be learn Fashions fade… but, Style is… …a gift …eternal o you are without …a way to say wh having to speak nscious choice – …Confidence - A co Individual…

and my personal favourite:

The trick is to care enough to wonder what looks great, and then care not a jot what others think

Peter Scott courtesy of the Guardian

Yves Saint Laurent courtesy of Forbes.com

I hope by now you get the idea. Style is not about ticking the Trend and Fashion boxes in order to meet someone else’s approval. But it is about making conscious choices that are unique to you. Style should reflect your personality and your home should authentically reflect those living there. What saddened me though was that a lot of folk seem to believe style exists “over there somewhere” and many lack the confidence to say they have “It”. Sorry, but I don’t subscribe to this way of thinking: if Style is a reflection of You, how can it be wrong?

Inspiration really is everywhere. Shops, magazines, markets, architecture, nature, websites, blogs, books, friend’s houses, museums & art galleries, the movies, your local hair salon. The list of where to find inspiration is virtually endless. Don’t feel compelled to “pick” your style straight away, or worry that you can’t change your mind further down the road. Simply invest time in soaking up ideas and gathering information. Keep a scrapbook (virtual or actual) and just add to it. The important bit is this: you can’t know what styles you like if you have zero knowledge of what’s out there. Knowledge is power!

Moleskin notebooks courtesy of creativebloq.com

Next, Be mindful:

Once you commence your fact-finding mission, ask yourself a few searching questions: don’t just chuck magazine cuttings into your notepad and stash it away. Ask yourself why you like that scheme / chair / colour / theme / object. What does it speak to you about? What does it embody or represent? What inspires you about that image? Have you been to a place that you wished you could pick up and take home with you? We recently holidayed in sunny Scotland where our hotel had a library. It was beautifully decorated, with furniture that suited it perfectly, an open fire and a big oak bookcase with a ladder. I wanted to cram all of its cosiness in my suitcase and install it in my living room. Instead I took some pictures and did a little reflecting: the room was quiet, warm and cosy, it had enough stag /game references to keep me happy for a long time, and it embodied a lot about a country I have grown to love. All of these concepts I can bring home, even if I can’t teleport the actual room back to mine. Gathering inspiration and reflecting on your finds helps build a great foundation. Knowing what you like and why is just the right springboard for the next phase of our style files: The Perfect Execution.

Where there’s smoke... If you rent privately, or if you are a landlord, this one is for you. Since 1st October it has been law that all privately rented properties have a smoke detector on each floor, and that any room with a solid fuel burning fireplace or boiler must have a carbon monoxide detector fitted as well. Failure to do this could lead to the landlord receiving a £5000 fine, not to mention the dangers involved for the tenants. Hot stuff Heating, Heating, Heating; the bane of a Yorkshireman’s life. It’s that time of year when your nearest and dearest are starting to shiver if they creep out from under the duvet, and the icicles start to form on the underside of window ledges. My old rule of thumb was that the heating could go on in January if it was really cold, and the rest of the year would look after itself. I was once reminded, when I invited friends over for dinner and they could see their breath in the living room, that not everyone would prefer to wear a thick jumper than put the heating on. So, as utility companies continue to line their pockets with your hard earned cash it becomes more and more important to heat effectively and heat economically. I’ve written before on the pros and cons of various electrical heating options, but the main aspects remain the same; what is right and best for one household may not be best for another.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Hi, we are Harry & Jake. Our grandad and nanny, Ray and Debbie Livingston, have been supplying fitted kitchens and bathrooms in York since our mummy was as little as us! To deal with someone you can trust, go to see our grandad.

For quality

The principles of keeping a background heating level and only boost when you need to continue also remain the same. This is the classic way storage heaters work, stocking up on the cheaper electricity available overnight and then drip feeding it back throughout the day and evening. 2015’s heaters will do this 20% - 30% more efficiently than those we installed in your home in the 1970s. If you need alternative heating solutions, or additional heating, talk to Herbert Todd & Son. We can supply and fit what is right for you and your home, to see you warm and cosy throughout the winter – just as we have done for the last 80 years! n Visit www.htodd.co.uk

Sea side sand pit

The little ones love a good sand pit and they would probably like their own boat too. Having a browse on Ebay led us to finding several old wooden boats that where no longer sea worthy. Prices ranged from around £15 - £200.

Reclaimed pallets

We’re not sure what happened to pallets before they started getting up-cycled left right and centre. Here at YLL HQ we are a thrifty bunch, so much so that studio manager Zoe and her hubby have created this gorgeous patio area out of pallets. We are so impressed. Pallets are often used by large companies so it’s worth asking around your friends to see if anyone can get hold of some.

Bright idea

tumble fire pit

The next time a fuse goes in a bulb don’t see it as a light going out, see it as a eureka moment. Taking the top end of the bulbs out makes room for them to become gorgeous miniature glass planters. To make extra sure these cute little bulbs were possible to make, we took on the challenege ourselves and have written a set of instructions across the page.

Yes, that is a washing machine drum turned into a fire pit. Soften the blow of letting your loved ones know you’re going to have to fork out for a new washing machine when it breaks by telling them around this toasty campfire and melting marshmallows. Not every cloud creates a glowing, warm silver lining.

How to: make light bulb planters You will need: A bulb, wire cutters, thin pliers, tweezers , a bottle lid and String. WARNING: Please wear gloves and goggles when doing this project!

First up, balance your bulb on a bottle lid. Then squeeze the small metal ball on top of the bulb with the pliers until you can pull it out, sometimes this may mean you break some of the black glass. Don’t panic if you do.

Next, break the black glass out of the bulb with a screw driver. Once you’ve broken the black glass you will need to break the inner clear tube gently. Break it off until you can shake all of the contents out.

Shake the inner glass out of the bulb or grab one of the wires with some tweezers and gently pull it out. wash the bulb out with water and tissue paper.

Tie with string, add flowers or herbs and voila! Enjoy your hanging light bulb planters.

Getting caught in the web Spiders: hate them or love them (seriously, who ‘loves’ them?) there is no denying that autumn is the time we see them the most. A combination of the cooling weather outside, and male spiders searching for mates, means they tend to wander into our homes, prompting either screams or fascinated coos (if you’re weird). If you’ve tried to hold back the arachnid horde with remedies including conkers, mint, and tea leaves, I’m afraid we have some bad news. The Royal Society of Chemistry have proven without a doubt that spiders aren’t repelled by anything. Really, nothing at all will put them off coming into your home, not even if they see you pointing at a shoe, then drawing your finger across your throat. That news hasn’t stopped Tiger Sheds creating what they claim is a spiderproof shed. The outhouse, which will set you back a mere £2000, as been

built to fend off spiders, incorporating completely sealed windows, peppermint and citrus impregnated into the wood, and a lovely paint job of light blue, which spiders are supposed to dislike. Commenting in The Guardian, Paul Hetherington of charity Buglife basically said the shed was a stupid idea that wouldn’t work. SLAMMED! However, you might want to take this chap’s words with a pinch of salt, as he went on to say that “there is about a million spiders in the average home.” Liar, has to be. He is lying, isn’t he? Isn’t he?!? Oh God, tell us he’s lying!!! ARRGGHH!

Neighbours, everybody needs good... Ever had a dispute with a neighbour over petty things like hedges, fences and grass cuttings? Has one of those irate neighbours ever then tried to kill you? No? Then you’ve clearly never lived in Avon Park, Florida. After discovering that his neighbour, Robert Hendrix, had accidentally showered his car with grass cuttings, 91 year old Max Horton pulled out a hand gun and told Hendrix that he was about to die. Forcing his neighbour to his knees, Horton held the gun against Hendrix’s head, but was fortunately tackled by another neighbour just in time for the shot to miss. Currently being held without the chance of bail in Highlands County Jail, Horton’s wife has really helped his defence by telling local news channels that “he always acted violent.” We’ve said it before, but a grass clippings catcher on your lawn mower is really useful.

A green-fingered high-5ive Going fully self-sufficient is the dream of many gardeners and allotment holders. But doing so could mean huge costs to get all the equipment you need to grow enough veg, and tend enough animals, your family will require. One such would-be Goode Life-er is Abz from 90s boy band 5ive (which, if we remember correctly, is pronounced 'Five'. Remarkable). Abz, real name Richard Abidin, gave up city living some years ago to live on a farm with his family,

and is now in need of some quick dosh to buy top soil and gardening tools. And what is he selling to raise such funds, why only his Brit Award, given to the band in 2000 for being the 'Best Pop Act' (which we assume was some kind of joke). Still, at time of press, the statuette was on Ebay and had amassed over £5000 in bids. Abz described the award as having “a couple of scratches – owning to its current use as a door stop.” Oh Abz, still dreamy...

Don’t just carve away blindly – here are some pumpkin facts to relay to trick-or-treaters. You know, so you bore them and they leave you alone. Buy your own sweets, losers. • • • • •

The name pumpkin comes from the Greek word ‘pepon’, meaning ‘large melon’. Pumpkins are a fruit, as they contain seed, but when it comes to cooking, they are often referred to as vegetables. The original jack-o’-lanterns were made with turnips and potatoes by the Irish. Each pumpkin has about 500 seeds. Pumpkins are 90% water.

MAKE EVERYTHING IN YOUR GARDEN LOVELY WITH...

Autumn Berries Keeping the doctor away

Autumn is here and ornamental berries have a large part to play in the autumn garden. Often overlooked in favour of bright fiery foliage colour, the fruits and berries can be equally colourful and usually have a much longer season, often persisting well into the winter months. As well as providing a burst of colour in the garden they also serve an ecological purpose as a ready source of food for birds, small mammals and invertebrates. Some of the earliest berries to ripen are those on the mountain ash trees (Sorbus). These usually start to turn during mid-August in colours ranging from bright red through orange, pink, yellow and white, and are a particular favourite of blackbirds and thrushes with the red and orange varieties being eaten first. ‘Autumn Spire’ is a small to medium sized variety ideal for small gardens with its narrow habit and brilliant red foliage colour, which contrasts well with the abundant golden yellow berries.

54

Crab apples (Malus), as well as making tasty jelly, are very decorative and often persist on the tree until the New Year. ‘Golden Hornet’ and ‘Gorgeous’ are particularly attractive varieties. Golden Hornet has a narrow upright habit and produces large crops of golden yellow fruit, while Gorgeous lives up to its name with abundant crops of glossy red and creamy yellow fruits (not forgetting the copious display of apple blossom they produced in the spring). When they do eventually fall they provide a welcome boost for small mammals and invertebrates.

A reliable old favourite is Pyracantha or firethorn. This easy to grow, thorny, vigorous evergreen shrub produces an unbeatable show of red, orange or yellow berries. It can be grown free-standing at the back of a border but is usually trained out against a wall or fence where the full effect of its berries can be appreciated. The large thorns also make it useful as an intruder proof barrier.

A splash of colour More old favourites are the Cotoneasters. These range in size from compact small low growing C. congestus nana, that reaches no more than 20cm (8”) tall, to the vigorous C. cornubia and C. exburiensis that eventually form small trees. Probably the most familiar is the Herringbone Cotonester, C. horizontalis. This deciduous shrub, if planted at the front of a border, has a horizontal low growing habit, but if planted at the foot of a wall will grow vertically with a spreading fan-shaped habit. Its impressive show of red autumn leaf colour and berries last well into December making it an excellent multi-purpose plant. n Dean’s Garden Centre, Stockton Lane, Stockton on the Forest, York Tel: 01904 400141

Tony Chalcraft gives us the lowdown on how to make your veg patch vampire proof.

Grow Your Own When I first came to Acomb 30 years ago, old Wilf on the plot nearby said “you’ll never grow that foreign stuff up here lad”. Well, how wrong he was, as every year we’ve grown garlic. The secret is to plant it in autumn, ideally before late-November. Don’t be tempted to plant garlic cloves from supermarket bulbs, as it’s probably a Mediterranean variety and won’t take kindly to a Yorkshire winter. Instead buy some ‘seed’ garlic online or from a garden centre. You’ll see various varieties available. A common one is Marco, which gives reasonable results. My favourites though are Germidor, which produces a large bulb with part purple skin, and Cristo, which is not usually as big but keeps very well. There are a lot of British bred varieties, mostly from the Isle of Wight, usually with ‘Solent’ in their name. I’ve never grown any of these and am a little suspicious that

Plant Now For Good Garlic

these too may not be at home in Yorkshire.

Planting

To plant, break up the bought bulb into individual cloves and place about nine inches apart with the top of the clove about an inch down. Don’t be afraid to plant deeply, this helps encourage strong rooting and prevent birds pulling the cloves out. I’ve found the bigger outside cloves usually give the best sized garlic and so discard any of the very small ones from the centre of the bulb.

I wouldn’t try and grow garlic in pots, it’s deeper rooting than you think. When choosing where to plant in the ground try and find a sunny spot. This helps it get going in the cold winter months and assists with ripening later in the summer. If nothing emerges for quite a few weeks after planting don’t fret. It can take six weeks or more before shoots are visible, so a mid-November planting often takes into the New Year to show above the surface. Occasionally, some cloves fail to appear or, if the weather is very cold, die back. Even in the hardest winters though, most of the cloves will survive and grow away. Once the weather warms in early spring garlic grows rapidly.

Rooted

From late spring onwards little attention is necessary other than occasional weeding. I’ve never watered garlic – it will have rooted

deeply in the winter and can draw up all the moisture it needs. Depending on variety garlic should be ready for harvesting from late June. A tell-tale sign that it’s ready is the foliage yellowing and dropping. Some people like to clear soil from around the bulb, but I simply dig it up with a fork shaking off any loose soil. Some garlic is eaten fresh – extra yummy, but most is put in the greenhouse for a few weeks to dry thoroughly. It’s then plaited in the traditional French style and hung to store in a cool, dry and airy place. Kept like this it should be good, especially long keeping types like Cristo, until the following April or May.

Mammals

November is when many species of animals start to bed down for the winter months. Expect to see lots of squirrels dashing about with nuts to bolster their stores. Hedgehogs will also start to scout out a cosy hidy-hole this month, so be extra careful if you're setting up a bonfire on the 5th – a hedgehog might have moved in underneath it prior to you setting it alight. Why not lend a hand to hibernating animals by constructing a home for them? Something as simple as a sheet of corrugated metal or plastic left on the grass can form a few welcome slumber chambers for small mammals and amphibians, while bird and bat boxes can be bought relatively cheaply.

Ask Chris ...

Got a gardening question?

n If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help Q. I have a large camellia in my garden with black sticky residue on the older leaves. I can't see any insects, so have you any ideas?

A. This is caused by a common insect found on camellias called the scale insect. They are small, sap-feeding insects, and the nymphs and mature females of the species produce the characteristic white, yellow, or brown wax scales covering their relatively featureless body. Scales generally remain static on plants and feed by inserting their fine stylets into plant tissue. They are especially troublesome in greenhouses, where introduced tropical and sub-tropical plants are widely established. Females usually lay hundreds of eggs under the wax scales, then young nymphs, known as crawlers, will hatch weeks later and disperse over the plants to settle in and feed. All stages of the insect feed on sap and excrete honeydew, which makes pants sticky and encourages the growth of sooty moulds. The extent of this contamination often seems out of proportion to the number of scales present on the leaves, and this can lead to extensive fouling of the older foliage. As well as being unsightly, persistent

infestations can weaken the plant. Chemical treatments are most effective when applied to kill young crawlers before they settle in to feed. They are easily killed by a thorough application of non-persistent contact insecticides. If insecticide treatment cannot be timed to coincide with hatching, systemic insecticides may be used to kill the mature females. A second application should be made about two weeks after the first to catch the nymphs that have hatched since the first treatment. Best of luck!

Q. I have grown some very large cornus shrubs in my garden. When is the best time to prune them? A. Cornus, or Dogwood as it is sometimes called, is a shrubby species, mainly deciduous and hardy, grown for their red, yellow, or green winter colour of their stems. Cornus alba are vigorous,

twiggy, fully hardy shrubs, with heads of star-shaped flowers in late spring which are followed by white or pale blue fruits. Young stems are bright in colour in winter, with cornus alba being bright red. Cornus sanguinea 'mid-winter fire' has flamecoloured stems, while cornus sericea flaviramea is bright yellow. Hard annual pruning produces the best winter display of stems, but at the expense of flowering growth. Prune in early spring, before bud-break. If you are growing it for flowers and fruit, allow it to develop unpruned. Restrict the spread of it, if necessary, by cutting out one in four old shoots each year. This will also encourage new growth from the base. Neglected plants can be renovated by cutting out old wood at the centre of the bush. When cultivars are grown for their stem effect, allow the bush to grow unpruned in the first year after planting, then cut all the stems back to two inches from the ground. In subsequent years cut all stems back to two buds of the previous year's growth. Hope this helps!

Droning oN Did you catch the special episode of Coronation Street last month, the one filmed and broadcast entirely live from the studios in Salford? Although it’s easy to appreciate the extra effort the actors had to make (such as remembering lines with no chance of a off-camera prompt), what you might not have known about is how much effort the drones had to go to. As producers were worried that people outside of the studios might try to interrupt the live broadcast by honking car horns and shouting, they employed extra security staff to keep the surrounding area nice and quiet. But they also employed the use of drones, remotely controlled flying helicopters, to defend against aerial attack. Yes, that is a real concern these days for live TV –

62

that someone will fly a little helicopter into shot and buzz around the actors’ heads. To be honest we can’t think of anything funnier that watching Tyrone get chased into the Rovers Return by a drone, but we’re a bit odd. To that end, ITV hired a group of specialist drone pilots to crash their own RC helicopters into anything that threatened the security of ‘The Street’. By God, their sacrifice is great, but they shall forever be remembered.

A bridge too far

Got a wee one who loves to build things out of Meccano? Here’s something for them to aspire to. Designed and built by students of Queen’s University, Belfast, and local school children, a 100ft bridge, consisting of 11,000 Meccano pieces, has officially been recognised as the world’s largest Meccano structure.

Installed to span Belfast’s Clarendon dock, the project has been designed to encourage more young people into engineering, and has even seen several people walk across it – safely! So if your kids have a growing Meccano, LEGO, or MEGA Bloks collection, consider this... wouldn’t a new foot bridge over the Ouse be lovely?

Fast food it ain’t If you fancied making yourself a sandwich, how long would it take? Two minutes, three maybe? Andy George, of the YouTube channel How To Make Everything, took a great deal longer, as he decided to make his snack from scratch. To create his chicken salad sandwich, Andy first grew wheat himself for

the bread, as well as milking a cow to make the butter. He also visited the seaside to collect sea water (for the salt, obviously), then collected honey from a live bee hive. For the main filling Andy purchased a whole, live chicken and then... yep, you guessed it... slaughtered it himself. The whole process, which took six months and set the Internet star back £1000 (!), can be viewed online. Visit YouTube and search for Andy George sandwich. Think on next time you’re making the kids’ packed lunches, eh?

We’re thrilled to learn that Haxby Hall is the home for a new, dedicated facility for people living with Dementia has opened at one of City of York Council’s Older People’s Homes as part of the council’s plans to modernise accommodation for older people. The new Poppyfields unit will provide care for eight older people living with Dementia, with the

The facility includes two ‘respite rooms’ to provide short term breaks for people who live in their own homes, and residents will be able to enjoy activities like baking, arts and crafts, quizzes and games.

A wonder down brick lane The story about the giant Meccano bridge got us thinking about LEGO, something that anyone with children will know all about. Especially if you’ve ever trodden on one in bare feet. Here are some facts... • The LEGO Group is one of the world’s largest tyre manufacturers. • On average, every person on the earth owns 86 LEGO bricks. • The first LEGO minifigure was produced in 1978. Since then more than four billion have been made – making them the world’s largest population group! Rights for minifigures! • The LEGO name is made from the first two letters of the Danish words LEG GODT, meaning ‘play well’. • Laid end to end, the number of LEGO bricks sold in 2012 would stretch round the world more than 18 times. • To reach the moon you would need to build a column of around 40 billion LEGO bricks.

Ca r e a b o u t yo u r r i g h t s Millions of us care for someone. This might involve popping over to see an elderly neighbour once in a while, to providing full-time live-in care for a family member or loved one. No matter how much time and energy is spent in caring for somebody else, as a carer you have special rights... but many of us don’t realise that. Carer’s Rights Day, taking place this year on 20th November, is annually organised by the charity Carers UK, and is designed to highlight just what help and support is available. Each year the charity holds Carers Rights Day to bring organisations across the UK together in helping

carers in their local community to find out about their rights and how to get what they are entitled to. Thousands of people looking after a disabled, older or seriously-ill loved one in York may be missing out on vital benefits and support. It’s estimated that there are over 18,000 carers in York alone, with around 1,300 under the age of 18.

The day’s the day That is where you can help, regardless of if you care for someone, or even know a carer. Getting involved in Carers Rights Day can be as simple as finding out about the various ways carers can receive help, then having a chat with friends or family. If you're part of a group, club, or society, perhaps you could host a coffee morning? Carers UK will provide you with all the information you will need, and perhaps with your help, even more people will learn

about what they are entitled to for looking after someone. Carers can also find out more by attending a special Carers Rights Day event organised by York Carers Centre on Tuesday 17 November at New Earswick Folk Hall. The day will feature games and activities, such as curling and bingo, and lunch will be provided. There will be a range of advice, information and speakers, including Be Independent. n For more information or to book your place, please contact enquiries@yorkcarerscentre.co.uk or phone 715490.

Left to his own devices, your chilled out, cuddle loving, adorable little angel of a house cat, will quickly work his way around the neighbourhood, 'calling' on all the lady cats. The next thing you know there will be an

army of kittens knocking on your door demanding child support. Or something. Joking aside, getting your cat, male or female, neutered is an important thing, and thanks to Cats Protection you can now do it for just a fiver! Normally around £50, the procedure is available to those on state benefits, those with low incomes, students, and pensioners. But hurry – this special offer is only available until 12th December, so to find out more visit www.york.cats. org.uk or call 607909.

dedicated trainers into your home to train the dog. n If you want to know more, email volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk or call 01759 322299.

Nanuk and Nikita. This handsome pair came to the Animal Home to find a new owner. They are devoted to each other so ideally need to go to a new home together. The RSPCA are looking for a family who have previous experience with Huskies or similar breeds of dog.

Like rabbits, cats of either sex can be neutered from around six months of age. If you are experiencing problems with them living together as they reach sexual maturity, then consult your vet who may be able to advise castration of your male a little earlier to prevent this behaviour.

Suki. A very shy little cat who really needs to be in a loving home, not in a rescue centre. She needs to be a house cat and be in a home where there are no children. Once she is settled in Suki is an affectionate cat who loves to be fussed.

Q. How do I stop my dog from chewing her

paws? If your dog is chewing her paws it could either be a behavioural issue or maybe even a sign of something that needs medical attention. There are a number of reasons why she may be doing this, from something as simple as needing her anal glands emptying, to a potentially more serious skin issue. It would be best to take her to your vet to have her checked out for any underlying issues to rule these things out.

Q. How old do male rabbits

have to be to get castrated? Ideally your rabbit should be five or six months of age to be castrated, unless you are experiencing behavioural problems, or following a check with your vet resulting in them recommending otherwise.

Having a disability shouldn’t stop anyone from getting out into nature and having an adventure. That thinking is shared by Get Cycling, a York-based social enterprise that encourages people, regardless of age, sex, and ability, to get on their bike for fun and fitness. Recently the company organised a three-day off-road cycling extravaganza which saw 16 people, eight with disabilities, tackle the paths and routes of the National Forest near Derby. The trip followed an international outing to York’s twin city of Münster, as well as all the other bike-related fun that Get Cycling is known for. n Find out more at www.getcycling.org.uk

ASK THE EXPERT

Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she explains all about a new treatment that offers a non-invasive version of liposuction - 3D Lipomed. 3D Lipomed is the brand new medical grade version of the popular 3D Lipo treatments, offering a new and improved version of this powerful technology. The treatment offers an advanced combination of technologies to target fat removal, cellulite and skin tightening without the need to exercise.

What is 3D-lipo? 3D-lipo is probably one of the most advanced machines of its type. It offers a powerful new dimension in non-surgical fat removal, treatment of cellulite, and skin tightening for both the face and body. You’ll have probably heard of liposuction, which is a procedure that helps to get rid of fat in the body. 3D Lipomed is a powerful and revolutionary new approach to liposuction which does not involve surgery. This new treatment reduces body fat by destroying fat cells, instead of merely breaking them up and releasing them into the body.

What is the difference between 3D liposuction and standard liposuction? Traditional liposuction is an invasive procedure,

which requires a lot of vigorous exercise to metabolise the fat cells after the procedure. However, 3D Lipomed is entirely non-invasive, and offers outstanding results without any exercise required at all. Therapists use various strategies – including ultrasound, radio frequency and cryolipolysis – to reduce fat without ever going beneath the skin.

How does it work? A full 3D liposuction treatment involves: • Cavitation. Using ultrasonic waves to break down fat cells, cavitation is the latest non invasive body contouring treatment for localised fat and deep cellulite. • Cryolipolysis. Using the unique combination of electro and cryo-therapy, cryolipolysis freezes fat cells without affecting other body cells. Between 20-40% of the fat cells in the treated area die in a natural way and dissolve over time.

• Radio frequency. This part of the treatment serves to tighten the skin. • Dermology. Vacuum skin rolling is used to reduce cellulite. These treatments are available individually or as part of a larger fat-removal programme. The therapist will take measurements before and after each treatment.

Are there any side effects? Some mild discomfort directly after each treatment is possible. However, this non-invasive approach to liposuction comes with very few risks or side effects, especially compared with traditional liposuction. Offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. As the evidence for the effectiveness of complimentary and alternative medicine grows, how would you like to be involved in some of the research yourself? The Northern College of Acupuncture, based on Micklegate, is excited to launch a new series of research studies which could see you getting treatments at drastically reduced prices. The college is especially interested to hear from people with complaints such as digestive conditions, menopause or premenstrual conditions, stress, and anxiety. The expert healers will then work out a course of either acupuncture, herbal remedies, or nutritional changes to help with problem. Skin care revisited Following up from last month, in which Face the Future gave Krystal a skin consultation, Krystal let’s us know how she got on: The first couple of weeks were difficult; I had to use less product than I usually would, but be consistent in my efforts. I was given an SPF 50 sun cream, and three different moisturizing creams that were only to be applied each morning and night. Chloe from Face the Future suggested I ditch the cheap facewipes and move onto a

cleansing milk (no more nasty chemicals!). The first thing I noticed was the clearness of my skin: I’ve barely had spots since I started my treatment. The dry skin above my top lip was a little tougher to combat. It took about two weeks, but now the red and flakiness has improved dramatically, although it does occasionally flare up after a night out. I’m dead impressed with the consultation and the end results. I’ll definitely be using Face the Future again. •Visit www.facethefuture.co.uk

It’s a festive farm at Piglets! Father Christmas must be excellent at time management, as not only is he making an appearance at Beningbrough Hall, he’s also taking up residency at Piglets Adventure Farm at Towthorpe Grange, 5th-24th December. Visitors to the park can not only meet the big man himself, but they can also wander around Santa’s Woodland Village, pet the animals, take a ride on Santa’s sleigh, visit the toy shop, see a nativity scene (made up of rabbits and guinea pigs, obviously), and also enjoy evening sleigh rides on selected nights. A fun day out like that will be really good for your elf. Tee hee. n Visit www.pigletsfarmpark.co.uk

Are you sitting comfortably? Then Santa will begin… at Beningbrough Hall

Would you like a story? As part of small group workshops, join Father Christmas in the historic library of Beningbrough Hall, every weekend between 5th-20th December, to hear a story. Then, if you've been good, he might even have an early present for you and a chance to take photographs with him – before he dashes off back to the North Pole. It seems that the big fella loves nothing more than spending the run-up to Christmas relaxing in the stately home. We can’t blame him for that – it is gorgeous. n To book, call 472027

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC (7th November) The world’s favourite ABBA and Bee Gees concert show is coming to town with an all-new, sequinspangled production. The international smash-hit show’s all-star cast has entertained the world with lycra-tight harmonies and superb musicianship for longer than ABBA did during the 70s and 80s!

DICK WHITTINGTON AND HIS MEERKAT (10th December 2015-24th January 2016) Whilst the Theatre Royal undergoes a £4.1million redevelopment, Dick Whittington and His Meerkat will take place in The Signal Box Theatre at the National Railway Museum. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the UK’s longest running pantomime Dame, Berwick Kaler, and the York Theatre Royal team as you’ve never seen them before. As always, expect fabulous costumes, stunning sets, toe-tapping music, breath-taking transformations, and magical spectacle. The script will remain the same old hilarious rubbish – they are only changing venues, not the habit of a lifetime!

Dara O’Briain - Crowd Tickler (5th & 7th November) One of the most recognisable faces on British TV, Dara O’Briain was the host of the hugely successful Mock The Week, The Apprentice: You’re Fired, and Star Gazing Live. Catch one of the most charismatic, intelligent, fast-talking and downright funny live performers working today.

The Importance of Being Earnest (17th-21st November) Oscar Wilde’s much loved and brilliantly witty masterpiece is known to elegantly lampoon the hypocrisies of a Victorian society. Two bachelors, the dependable John Worthing, and upper class playboy Algernon Moncrieff, feel compelled to create different identities in order to pursue two eligible ladies, Cecily Cardew and Gwendolyn Fairfax. Rosalind Ayres, Nigel Havers, Martin Jarvis, Christine Kavanagh and Siân Phillips star. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK (11th December 2015-3rd January 2016) New Pantomime Productions returns to Grand Opera House for the 17th year this Christmas with the ever popular Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack lives in a small village with his Ma. The only food left in their cupboard is a piece of mouldy cheese, a rotten apple core and a pair of smelly socks! Find out what happens when Jack takes their old cow to market and ends up selling her for five beans. Starring panto legend and former Emmerdale star Stuart Wade as Dame Tilly Trot, X-Factor’s Jade Ellis as Fairy Peapod, and Scooch’s Russ Spencer and Caroline Barnes as Jack and Jill.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre Visit www.jrtheatre.co.uk Viva La Dance (12th-14th November) The hottest dance show this November from the students of renowned York dance teacher, Evelyn Witcombe, returning for her 47th annual showcase. Expect dance of every style, from ballet and tap to acrobatic and Irish, including a special armed forces themed number to mark Remembrance Sunday. SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS (5th-12th December) Come and join Snow White on her adventures this Christmas as the Rowntree Players take you on a magical ride in yet another brand new rollicking romp of a panto. With songs, dances, slapstick, and plenty of silly gags, this traditional family pantomime is always a big hit with young and old alike.

National centre for Early Music Visit www.ncem.co.uk Crazy Creatures (13th December) Calling all young people, family, and friends – get to the centre for a family friendly concert. The performance brings to life two children's stories 'The Duck With No Luck' and 'A Cat Called Scratch' written by Jonathan Long, with music by the awardwinning composer Paul Rissmann.

Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough Visit www.sjt.uk.com Poles Apart (16th-21st November) The Theatre Royal is an oasis of artistic calm, equality and sensitivity, but when the scaffolders from hell descend upon the thespians, the masks slip and the curtain comes down. Phil, Fat Glen and Polish Jan, are on task and finish as they deliver a breathless rant on life, art and sausage sarnies in a desperate effort to mend the leaking roof. Hansel and Gretel (10th-27th December) It is dinner time and as usual the children push around the food on their plate, complain, and act rudely. So tonight instead of dinner, Mother tells the story of Hansel and Gretel. As the story evolves of two hungry children abandoned in the forest by their parents, and their capture by a wicked witch, the family embraces their roles and find a Happily Ever After ending.

Oh Christmas tea, oh Christmas tea… Now that the cold weather is well and truly upon us, the kettle boils roughly once every five minutes at Your Local Link HQ. And we’re thrilled to discover that we’ll have some delightful new hot drinks to enjoy this festive season, courtesy of the lovely folks at Hebden Tea Company on The Shambles who are launching a new range of festive teas that are perfect for winter. We’re particularly excited about the gingerbread rooibos, apple and vanilla black tea, and chocolate and orange rooibos, but there are plenty of delicious flavours to choose from. They’ll make a fantastic Christmas gift for loved ones, but frankly we’re going to be selfish and get some as a pressie to ourselves. n Visit www.hebdentea.com or call 656707.

it's yours, after all

Food waste is a massive concern these days, with a great deal of the food we buy – much of it still edible - ending up in landfill sites. Fortunately one friendly group in Tang Hall is battling that growing problem with yourcafe. At yourcafe, which meets every Wednesday at Tang Hall Community Centre, chefs turn food donated from supermarkets, allotment holders, and members of the public, into delicious meals. Patrons can then pay-asthey-feel, giving the amount of money they believe the meal was worth. This is a great way to get a cheap warm meal, help reduce York's overall food waste, and meet a lovely bunch of people. n Find out more at www.yourcafe.co.uk

Your recharging station Heading out into town this month to get in some Christmas shopping? Hitting the shops can be a tiring affair, so when fatigue, thirst, and hunger hits, where do you go in the city centre to relax, unwind, and recharge? Easy, head to the Minster. But before you try to order a cappuccino from a choir boy during Evensong, we mean head to the Minster's doorstep on the corner of High Petergate... there you'll find Bennett's Bistro. Bennett's is a lovely and lively cafe serving hot and cold drinks, home-made cakes, breakfasts, sandwiches and other delicious light bites. But by night, Tuesday to Saturday, Bennett's Bistro transforms into a cosy, candlelit bistro serving locally sourced evening meals, accompanied by a great selection of wines. It makes the perfect location to relax and watch the rest of the city busily pass by, while gazing up at the nearby cathedral in wonder. Oh, and if you're reading this feeling peckish then we can only apologise for the following: rib-eye steak, pan roast duck breast, twice-cooked BBQ glazed pork belly, sweet potato terrine, sautéed wild mushrooms, and pan friend Queen scallops... just a selection of what Bennett's have to offer. You've stopped reading haven't you? You're already on your way there, aren't you? Well stop, because to book you'll need to call 655344. Okay? Right, keep going and we'll see you there.

Elderly Care Home in Strensall

Queen Ethelburga’s provides a high quality, in house catering service to both large numbers of pupils and private clients. Due to expansion, we are currently offering excellent opportunities for the following positions within our Catering Department: CATERING ASSISTANTS Full time 40 hours per week, working 5 days from 7. Duties include serving meals to students, staff and visitors, preparation & clearing of food service areas, providing refreshments for events, cleaning of all catering areas in compliance with Food Safety and Health & Safety regulations. Some catering experience would be an advantage as would a Food Hygiene Certificate, however full training will be given. The department operates 2 shifts, 06.30am-15.00pm and 11.00am-19.30pm and the position does require weekend work. The rates of pay are £8.00 during the week & £9.30 weekends.
