Fall into October Dear reader, The arrival of October, with it’s windier weather and darker evenings replacing the summer sun, should be cause for tragedy rather than celebration — but that’s never been the case at Your Local Link. We’ve been counting down the days until the leaves began to fall, because we understand that cooler weather also means comfy afternoons curled up under a warm blanket listening to a crackling fire, and trips to pumpkin patches in the run up to spooky season. HOROSCOPES

STARSIGN OF THE MONTH

LIBRA 23 SEP - 22 OCT RD

STARSIGN OF THE MONTH: LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT

I think that you are slowly coming to the conclusion that it’s time to leave a few things behind. Not the good, just the bad and the ugly — as the month progresses you get a much clearer picture of which is which. No, you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water, but that water does need refreshing, and you’re the one with the bucket. You can’t please everyone so don’t waste your time trying.

SCORPIO 23 OCT - 21 NOV RD

ST

I’d expect a rather lovely month, especially in family situations and affairs of the heart. Things seem to be falling nicely into place, you will not be unhappy at the response you get from other people when you put forward your thoughts and ideas. Anyone even remotely involved in

animal welfare will be delighted at the outcome of one particular problem. This will also be a good month for taking up new pastimes and hobbies.

SAGITTARIUS 22 NOV - 21 DEC ND

ST

As my old Grandmother used to say — “if tha wants summat done proper, do it theesen.” In other words, you’re in the driving seat and it is you who must make the choices and decisions that matter — those which not only affect you, but those other people around you as well. This is not always an easy task, but it falls upon your shoulders now because there have been too many times in the past when you have evaded challenging issues. So, be brave. Lead and let’s see who follows.

There will be some involvement with legalities and bureaucracy this month, which isn’t a problem as such, it’ll just take up too much of your time when you want to be concentrating on other things. Emotionally you may find yourself playing piggy-in-the-middle as you become involved with other peoples’ problems –good luck with that one! Travel aspects look interesting especially if long haul journeys are in the wind. They might even lead to overseas reunions.

James Christie might just be a holiday in sunny Spain, it could just as easily be a journey of self-discovery. Either way, it looks like being an exciting and stimulating month in which your problems are seen as challenges to be overcome. Your victories and triumphs will be well defined. If there are any problems facing you, you are successful in navigating your way around them, so well done!

ARIES 21 MAR - 19 APR ST

Communications are the key issue for October, especially between parents and children, but also within relationships. Don’t keep your feelings locked up inside, rather tell people what’s going on in your head and let them respond accordingly. Practical communications are also important, so it’s time to write letters and make phone calls, look up old friends, and maybe heal a few old wounds. Unfair bills need to be challenged.

I think that whatever else might be happening in October, the conduct of an emotional relationship is probably of the greatest importance. So, gentlemen, time to be tough and strong and to lead by example, while female Gemini need to be on their guard against a man who is unwilling or unable to make compromises. I know this sounds like a contradiction, but Gemini girls are one thing while Gemini guys are another.

It’s no good having brilliant ideas if you haven’t got the time or the inclination for putting them into action and making them work. You may be great at talking the talk, but how good are you at walking the walk? October could be a bit of a leveller as you find the

answer to that particular question. On a more parochial level, a secret is revealed, a confidence breached, an old friend lost, and a new friend found.

should bring great pride and satisfaction. There is an increase in energy levels, both physical and mental, and although it might be quite an expensive month in many ways, you should be getting more than your money’s worth. There’ll also be some moodiness in a close emotional relationship, not of your making, so not for you to sort out — you must not let this slight negative spoil the positives.

This looks like being a rather “cosy” month when you start to find more enjoyment out of the simple things in life. Certainly, all domestic issues are very much at the forefront of your thinking, and this could be a lovely month for cementing important new relationships. After some of the turbulence you have experienced in your history, this might take a bit of getting used to, but go with the flow of it, enjoy it, but do not take it for granted.

VIRGO

Smug? Self-satisfied? Very pleased with yourself? No, no, I’m not saying those things at all, but that IS the way you’re going to be feeling throughout the better part of the month, and probably with very good cause. Relationships are where you need them to be right now, you’re being productive and successful on the work scene, and you seem to be enjoying a greater degree of respect and popularity… So what could possibly go wrong?

WALKING WITH

THE WANDERER

Clifton, Skelton and the Ouse

Starting from the city centre, this walk heads north-west, mainly using green corridors, to Skelton. It then heads for the river Ouse, following it all the way back to the start. If you haven’t got time for all four hours, the walk can be shortened by returning from Rawcliffe Park & Ride (see instructions at Direction Point 5). An even shorter option is to return to the city centre via the river from Clifton Green.

Is This Walk For Me?

The walk is long but otherwise undemanding, with much of it on hard surfaces. At times when the river is high, sections of the walk from Direction Point 6 will be impassable.

Getting There

Several bus routes stop near Exhibition Square while the nearest long stay carpark is Marygate. The walk could also begin from Rawcliffe Park and Ride which is accessible via the no. 2 bus.

Refreshments

There are numerous opportunities in or near the city centre. If you do get peckish en route there’s the Lysander Arms at Rawcliffe and Riverside Farm on the road to Skelton.

What To See

There are back routes a-plenty on the way to Rawcliffe as well as one of the city’s best parks — featuring a hidden lake.

Clifton, Skelton & The Ouse Time: 4 hours Distance: 9 miles

1. You’ll start off facing the art gallery — once

5. Turn right. (To shorten the walk,

As you approach go ahead — not right — over a broken stile to an embankment at which turn left to continue from Direction Point 8. Go through the underpass and continue alongside the main road. You should be approaching Skelton, and with Ousebank Drive on the opposite side of the road, pass through a hedge gap and take a tarmac path with a pond to your left. At the street, turn left towards a junction. Then turn right and continue until you reach a grassy area on the left, with a path leading left at a noticeboard. Follow this beside the grass to a road. Then turn left, passing the church and keeping on the village street to reach the main road.

6. Cross the road and turn left for

30 metres, then turn right down a narrow lane (signed ‘Overton’). Just after the road dips, take the cycle track left (signed ‘York 4’). Follow the track as it curves crossing a metal

bridge, you’ll reach the river on the right. At a house, turn left on the track away from the river.

7. Beyond the houses take the

signed cycle track right which curves back to the river. Continue to a kissing gate. About 40 metres beyond this at a grassy area, go right and walk over the floodgates —then curve left on the embankment. Continue along the embankment and go under the large road bridge.

a grassy strip. Follow the path as it curves, keeping right at a divide to reach an ‘End of Route’ sign. Then turn left towards the main road.

8. Now keep on the riverside

path atop the embankment. After another kissing gate, continue alongside the river, which eventually curves sharp left, for about a mile to reach floodgates. Once you’re over these, take the tarmac path at the bottom of the bank. Continue through a wooded area until you reach Clifton Bridge.

9. Follow the riverside path under

the bridge with playing fields, then a grassy area, to the left. Continue under a railway bridge and through a stone arch to a metal (Lendal) bridge with the Museum Gardens left. At the bridge turn left up the cobbles. Pass the Museum Gardens entrance to reach the traffic lights. Finally turn left and you’ll return to Exhibition Square.

Disclaimer Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description, some changes may have occurred since publication. WINDOW TO THE WORLD OF FILM The Aesthetica Film Festival is perhaps our city’s most important cultural event of the year; it blends a glorious celebration of the British film industry, alongside some brilliantly insightful exhibitions and keynote speeches from world renowned creatives. Whether you’re a budding film-maker yourself, or just an all-out fan of the pictures — this BAFTA-Qualifying celebration should be top of your November priorities. For us York residents it’s the closest we’ll get to the lights off Hollywood as more than 400 films — laugh-outloud comedies, award-winning dramas, thrillers, animation and documentaries — will be specially screened in 15 iconic city locations from the 8th to 12th of November.

Back with a BANG Fares Micue, Wherever You Take Me, 2021 The Aesthetica Festival really is a window to the world — showcasing the kind of stories we'd never get to see at a local cinema, from all across the globe. The best way to make the most of it is with a Days Pass — it allows you to also experience award-winning masterclasses from industry leading experts, so you can properly experience film in its purest form. Get your tickets from www.asff. co.uk/yorkdays or in person at City Screen from 8 November, and don’t miss out on the York Days Discount through which you can save 50% on passes.

Not disheartened by the obstacles caused by pandemics, the cost of living crisis and a major reduction in funding for creative industries, the Bev Jones Musical Company (BJMC) is exploding back onto the York scene. See them in action later this month as they bring Guys and Dolls to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre — it runs from October the 18th until the 21st. The company was founded by Bev Jones, the former Head Chorister to her majesty Elizabeth II, up until he tragically passed away in 2016. Ever since, his wife Lesley has proudly taken on the mantle, often dipping into her own pocket to keep the lights on and the shows running. She managed to keep this up until 2020, when theatre closures caused by COVID-19 lockdown almost proved fatal to the BJMC. Without regular show-going audiences, maintaining business became impossible. This year

MAKING SPACE Local hero Abigail Gaines has transformed Rowntree Park into an oasis of female empowerment and community. This June she put together a special programme, Make Space for Girls in Rowntree Park, with regular sessions including exercise classes, dance, photography and theatre — to help girls see Rowntree Park as a safe place to make new friends and learn

16

new skills. She explains: “We believe that every girl deserves access to public spaces and the opportunities they offer. Our events aim to inspire girls, build supportive networks with other girls and women, and try to change the fact that girls’ use of parks drops as they get older.” Hearing from just one of the 250 girls involved demonstrates the

massive impact the programme is already having: “I think it’s so important that us girls should feel welcome in parks. I had stopped coming as I felt there was nothing for me, but I know there are events for me and I have as much right to be here as anyone else.” To read more about the impact of the changes at Rowntree Park head to www.rowntreepark.org. uk/make-space-for-girls.

however, Lesley has taken it upon herself to revive the company once more. She told us “After his [Bev Jones’] death in 2016, I was very keen to continue his work and company. I realise it is a big ask for our previous audiences to support us once again. But I recommend coming to see some of York’s finest performers in this slick, polished production” Get tickets for Guys and Dolls from www.josephrowntreetheatre.co.uk to help keep Lesley’s dream alive.

AWARD-WINING PROPERTY FRANCHISE SET TO CONQUER YORK We traditionally associate renting out a property on a short-term basis as more hard work than it’s worth— especially when you consider all the cleaning, and admin tasks you find yourself struggling away with behind the scenes. This perception leaves thousands of properties sitting empty for months every year. Fortunately Pass the Keys — an award-winning property management company, who have been solving headaches for landlords across the country since 2019, have just set up a satellite office in York. If you're after credentials, look no further than Trust Pilot where they have just shy of three thousand 5 star or Excellent reviews. They’ll manage all the hassle involved with renting it out — including expert guest screening, hotel quality linen and unrivalled cleaning services— all so that both you and your guests will have as comfortable an experience as is possible. Pass the Keys’ have been so successful because of

how effortlessly they combine the very best of modern smart technology — like the magic host portal where you receive everything you need to know about your property directly to your smartphone — with good oldfashioned customer service. The local team are as knowledgeable about the local area as they are about the property market, providing hosts with a consistent five-star, end-to-end service — the only hassle you’ll be dealing with from this point on, is what to do with the maximum return on your property you’ll receive. days ahead With so many cars on the road, we often forget about the importance of cheap and reliable public transport, and the role it plays in bringing together the more isolated members of our community. As a result, in recent years those vital services have been allowed to decline all whilst becoming more expensive. In order to revitalise our buses, the council have capitalised on a number of national government initiatives in a plan to restore trust, and leave behind a lasting legacy of high-quality and reliable public transport.

Bus services kept alive Three key bus services that were expected to be discontinued in the spring have been saved by York City Council. After securing £1 million worth of funding as part of the Bus Service Improvement Plan, services 12, 13 (Saturday), and 412, which run through Acomb, Tockwith, Heworth

and Haxby, will continue until March 2025. Councillor Andy D’Agorne, the Executive Member for Transport said: "The council cannot fix the crisis, but we’ll be working hard to safeguard the bus network and help it weather the current storm.”

Young people’s fares kept below £1 In a city-wide trial that started in early September, anyone aged from 5 to 16 will pay no more than £1 for a single fare when travelling on any bus journey that starts and ends within the City of York boundary. For families travelling — every fullpaying adult can be accompanied by three children who will travel for free. The Deputy Leader for Economy and Transport at City of York Council explains: “at a time when family budgets are under immense pressure we are pleased to be able to offer this £1 or free ticket price.” Against a backdrop of national driver shortages and rising fuel costs, this show of dedication from the council should be a sign of real encouragement to residents — they are prepared to support the services that matter. For full details of the bus routes head to www.itravelyork.info.

YORK

Sport Update October 2023: Three head coaches in as many weeks. By Staff Writer Sammi Minion As so often happens in our sport, what in pre-season felt like the beginning of an exciting new era — with the arrival of 17 new signings, now feels much closer to nightmare. Rather than injecting the team with enough squad depth to push on for promotion, the Minstermen are now winless in eight and staring down the barrel of relegation. In the last three weeks alone, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to three different York City managers, none of whom have been able to hold down a positive result. First up was boyhood City fan and head coach since February, Micheal Morton. At the start of the summer, Morton made headlines for building up a strong relationship with Matt Uggla immediately after the takeover. Unfortunately it was the squad’s performance on the field that ultimately strained that relationship. I spoke with Morton on the 24th of August, when City were only four without a win. At that point he still was confident of a turnaround, encouraging patience from the fan base. “Obviously we didn’t ever suggest

AUTOS

we’d be fighting for promotion this season, we’re looking to improve on last season and to achieve a strong top half finish […] I’m still confident we’ll have a successful season.” He wouldn’t be afforded the time to oversee the turnaround himself, after failing to beat either of Dorking or Rochdale over the bank holiday weekend, Morton was relieved of duty — to be replaced by his assistant, Tony McMahon on an interim basis. The intense calendar of National League football wasn’t waiting around for the Minstermen to regain their stability, as the Rochdale defeat was quickly followed up by a huge away fixture down in Ebbsfleet. Three days before kick-off, I had the opportunity to ask McMahon a couple of quick questions. Compared to Morton, his response was more focused and less ambitious — ‘To be honest I’m just targeting tomorrow.’ In the end McMahon’s spell in charge would last less than a week, a thumping 4-1 defeat suggested to the owners that a permanent appointment would be the only

path to PHOTO: NEAL ARDLEY stability. Late on the 6th teaching players of September the club did just how to play, because the way I’ve that — appointing number three, played across the last 3/4 years as the vastly experienced Neal has ended up with two play off Ardley signed a three year deal. If finals." there was one glimmer of hope to For regular updates as Ardley emerge from all the chaos— it was attempts to get York City back on the arrival of Ardley on three year track, head to www.yourlocallink. deal. co.uk. City looked much more confident on his managerial debut, a 2-2 draw at home to Boreham Wood, — as The Minstermen took the lead twice only to be pegged back. I managed to grab a quick word with Mr Ardley, on his own ambitions and targets for the season. ‘I don’t think, at the moment, the team is capable of getting in the playoffs. That’s where I’ll look and that’s where I’ll aim, but the realism of it is that I need to just try and get some structure in place — show the players how to pick up some points.’ “I’m confident in mine and my coaching staff’s coaching ability, I’m confident in my tactics on

Seeing the Minster-belles play under the lights at the LNER Community Stadium in front of more than 600 people this month, just a few weeks after the Lionesses ever-so-nearly brought football home, got us thinking about how we can help continue to foster the growth of the women’s game in York. If you or someone you know is involved in running a club and are looking to bolster your squad, reach out to sammi@yourlocallink.co.uk and we’ll try feature you in the November issue.

TRIED & TRUSTED ADVERTISERS In any business, no matter the size or scale, there is no greater marker of success than reputation. That’s what our new “Tried and Trusted” series is all about. Rather than replacing that age-old system, we want to enhance it, and amplify those recommendations all whilst giving more of a voice to our readers. We are committed to supporting the local businesses you have TRIED and TRUST. So whatever they’ve helped with, be

it a great building job, a top bit of landscaping or an exceptional service from one of our solicitors, we want to hear about it! While we do our best to vet advertisers, your recommendations are the best platform for them to receive the appreciation, and respect, they deserve. Let us know who is doing a top job! Tel 01904 767881, email info@ yourlocallink. co.uk or head over to www.yourlocallink.co.uk/ tried-and-trusted now and leave a review!

Without compromising on their 25 year guarantee for cabinets, you can choose

Act quickly as the sale ends on the 28th of October. Pop in to the Kettlestring Lane showroom or call up on 01904 580100 now to organise your free home visit. You can read more about this fantastic sale in extended detail at www.yourlocallink.co.uk.

Pick up today or delivery tomorrow WE HEAR FROM LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD I’m in particularly good spirits this month, having just returned from a few days in Croatia. While the fresh fish in Dubrovnik was excellent, and the Adriatic coast beautiful, I was really there to attend the Euronics Conference. Euronics is the largest electronics buying group in Europe, and the one we’re a part of. I was lucky enough to experience two days of presentations, from manufacturers like Bosch, Beko, Electrolux, Haier and Sony. Their overriding message was one of hope for shops like ours — across Europe people are returning to small independent suppliers and moving away from buying online. I’m sure there are endless reasons as to why customers are looking to independent shops for help, but the key for me is the fact that we are best placed to offer honest and reliable

advice. Whether it’s on a choice of manufacturer, technology or the best price, we can provide properly impartial advice so that you get the right product for your circumstances. We price match everyone from John Lewis to Currys, AO and Argos — you are always guaranteed the best price. We only use our own delivery and installation teams so will take care of your purchase and your property. We have loads of stock in our showrooms and warehouses so if you want to, you can pick up today or have your purchase delivered tomorrow. For your next oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher, television, microwave, air fryer or washer, why not give Todd’s a try! Visit the showroom at Monks Cross Dr, Huntington or give the team a call on 01904 628676 to find out more information.

Candles TO KEEP YOU COSY

Between your long windy walks to witness York’s transformation into an autumnal wonderland, and trips to pick up a pumpkin spiced latte from your local Starbucks, it’s important to get your house ready with warm blankets, a roaring fire and the perfect aroma —before the really cold weather sets in. This is our collection of the cosiest candles around, with the richest scents that’ll allow you to sit (or lie) back in ultimate comfort as the leaves fall outside your window. Autumn Daydream, £29.99 www.yankeecandle.co.uk Iconic candle-brand Yankee Candle’s contribution for Autumn 2023 is not to be missed, it’ll do exactly what it says on the tin (or jar) by transporting you towards the perfect autumn day— strolling through treelined streets with the scents of clove, lavender, balsam, and eucalyptus. A MOMENT OF AAAHH, £20 www.boweorganics.com Bowe Organics, a bespoke independent brand that specialise in hair and brow oil, as well as lip balm, have exploded on to the scene with this invigoratingly scented candle. It’s grounded upon essential oils like Myrrh, Lavender, Ylang Ylang and Cedarwood— to match the soothing effects of their favourite fragranced hair oil. They’ve bottled up the refreshing and relaxing scent so you can keep the powerful aroma close to hand all autumn long.

La Jolíe Muse Pumpkin Chai Candle, £17.99 www.amazon.co.uk Nothing sums up the sense of Autumn as well as this candle, it mixes the warmth of spiced pumpkin with the sweetness of vanilla and creamy coconut, to completely put you at ease. The scent is warming, relaxing and utterly nostalgic. The candle is packaged in an elegantly decorated glass jar, adorned with daisies and is coloured orange to reflect the colour of the October outside.

Pink Candles, £72, www.mazocandleslondon.com Like all Màzo creations, the Pink candle with its’ rich blend of grapefruit and peppery Elemi, emits a sweet and relaxing fragrance — both as a hot throw (when lit) and cold throw (unlit) — unlocking memories of the best massage you ever had, as the spicy pink peppercorn combines with essential oils, to draw tension from your mind and muscles.

Domestic. Enhance your home with our beautiful made-to-measure shading solutions. We offer an unrivalled range of blinds and curtains suitable for all domestic purposes. Choose from a huge range of styles, finishes and accessories.

Commercial. At Inspired Blinds we specialise in manufacturing and installing commercial blinds for offices, shops, hotels, schools, public sector buildings, factories and much more! No job is too big or small.

26

Wonderland Candle Gift Set, £40.50 www.arighibianchi.co.uk This candle collection is designed to fill your home with warm and calming aromas in order to seamlessly transition toward the wintery period. The trident of scents have been hand poured into a series of sleek ceramic basins — beginning with Nordic Cedar, starring cedar, cinnamon, pepper and bergamot. This is followed by the Indian Sandalwood candle; this fruity tone is brought to life through raspberry, tobacco, tonka and sandalwood. Finally comes the herbal inspired Persian Thyme; with thyme, lime, patchouli and oudh.

Autumn Tin Woodwick, £12.50 www.wax-lane.com Our final candle comes from Wax Lane, a local brand who produce all of their luxury fragrance products just around the corner in Haxby. This Autumn Woodwick is made from vegan soy wax, scented with spiced pumpkin and fitted with a wood wick which crackles while it burns. The nostalgic smell of spiced pumpkin combined with the crackling of a fire, will send you into complete autumn ease.

CONNECTING PEOPLE & GREEN SPACES IN YORK Join in, feel good alongside the ‘unsung heroes of the environment’ Anyone with couple of hours to spare each week or even month is encouraged to sign up for York’s branch of The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) — the charity work with just under 90,000 people around the country, striving to resurrect England’s green spaces and parks from dereliction. Alongside the obvious benefits to the community, putting your time into the TCV offers the brilliant opportunity to learn new skills, improve your fitness and mental wellbeing by combining outdoor exercise, increased contact with nature and the social benefits of group activity — it could even be the start of a career in community conservation work. The York branch have completely transformed Hull Road Park, just off Tang Hall. The park has been part of York’s community for decades but Council cutbacks in the last few years left it all but abandoned — this is where TCV stepped in. Their army of local enthusiastic volunteers completely cleared

the site of litter and brambles while planting over 1,000 bulbs to restore the beauty of a very tired rose bed. The park has properly returned to its’ former glory, with a colourful central display, accompanied by extensive paths. It’s no surprise that David Attenborough described the TCV as the ‘unsung heroes of the environment’ — in York alone they have singlehandedly transformed a plain and unloved space into a testament of community purpose, just imagine how far they could go and what impact they can make for our community if more of us were ready to lend a hand… If you would like to get involved — or find out more information, head to www.tcv.org.uk/yorkshire.

Top Ten Tomatoes As YLL’s legendary horticultural expert, people often come to me with questions like ‘what is your favourite tomato?’ The usual reply is ‘it depends’ — a response that often elicits a quizzical look. But it does depend, while the questioner is usually thinking of flavour, to the seasoned gardener; taste isn’t everything. Of course, good flavour is key, there’s no point in growing a bland tomato, but there are other considerations. These include how easy a variety is to grow and whether it’ll produce a worthwhile amount of fruit. So, to finally put those questions to an end — this is my tomato ‘top ten.’ Before we get underway, I should point out all my tomatoes are grown under cover in greenhouses and polytunnels, so this is a top ten for covered tomatoes — if I was cultivating outside then my top ten would be different. The plants start early and are cropped over a long season, some are planted in pots — often in a homemade compost mix, and some are grown in soil. None are ever cultivated in growbags. Something else to bear in mind is that I have lots of plants! All of this influences the selection. So here is my current top ten, based on the tricky tomato growing conditions of 2023. Favourites shift over time as new varieties are trialled and past stalwarts perform poorly.

So, here’s the top ten, counting down from the bottom: 10: Modus, a small red cherry plum. It offers a good to moderate flavour but is mainly in the list because it’s a strong grower, has good disease resistance, crops heavily and ripens quickly. 9: Buffalosun, the only beefsteak variety included. It can be an absolute whopper and the flavour is good if it’s warm. It grows taller in comparison to many beefsteaks but like most of its’ beefy cousins, it doesn’t give many fruits. 8 Crokini, a small, red and round cherry. It has a good, sweetish flavour and is very prolific — providing 20 or more fruit to each truss. 7: Bottondoro, a slightly elongated orange cherry. Another strong grower, this tomato is far less likely to split compared to Sungold. Its only vice is a tendency to blossom end rot (black bottomed fruit). 6: Shirley, a standard sized red tomato. It offers good to moderate flavour but makes the chart due to its consistent reliability over many years. 5: Golden Crown, a largish yellow cherry that provides a very good flavour, but the plants can be unreliable. Some make for strong growers while others are weak and straggly. 4: Sakura, a good-sized red cherry.

I now grow this in preference to Gardener’s Delight. It’s nearly as good in flavour but is a much more prolific fruiter and is far less prone to problems. 3: Sungold, an orange cherry. My top choice for flavour and would head the chart if it was easier to grow. Its most annoying vice is a tendency to split later in the season. 2: Sparta, a large standard red tomato. Good flavour, prolific cropper and very reliable and disease resistant. 1: Mountain Magic, a smallish standard red fruit. While MM is a relatively new variety, ever since I first had the chance to grow the tomato it’s been my chart topper. The flavour, especially in a warm summer, is excellent and the plants are disease resistant. The only drawback is that you can’t get enough of it — the seed is quite hard to obtain, probably because it’s rapidly become popular. Remember, this top ten is very much a personal choice. There’s no shortage of websites offering different selections. If you grow

EXPERT

Tony Chalcraft tomatoes outdoors, many could struggle (although Mountain Magic may be worth a try as it’s said to be blight resistant).

Did you hear that? With NHS resources declining in recent years wait times for even the most essential services are longer than ever. It’s meant that a lot of us have had to forgo some of the medical treatments that aren’t always seen as vitally important. One such issue is that of ear wax removal— even though as many as 2.3 million people in the UK suffer from serous wax build ups — the services aren’t readily available. Ryedale resident and experienced practice nurse Jenny Sugars set out two years ago to change this, starting Clear and Hear Ryedale, a wax removal specialist service — and the results are loud and clear. She’s now able to provide expert irrigation and microsuction treatment within a week of a client contacting her, all from the comfort of their home. At their landmark second anniversary, Jenny has welcomed a new member to her team, as she continues to expand services. Jenny told us how she spotted a gap in the market:

“I started the business as there wasn’t a local provision for ear wax removal in people's homes and I set out to provide the best

possible service in the area. “This last year saw the introduction of Carol who is currently offering irrigation appointments but hopefully soon will also be able to offer microsuction. ” If you or someone you know struggles with wax build up, suffer in silence no longer by calling Jenny up on 07999 325 656 now or head to www.clearandhearryedale.co.uk to organise an appointment.

VOLUNTEER SPECIAL

Lend a hand

We can sometimes forget to focus on the people that make York what it is. The backbone of our brilliant community are volunteers, they’re everywhere you look — caring for our older and more isolated citizens, maintaining our iconic historic sites and wonderful green spaces. Without the consistent hard work of so many local heroes, putting aside the few spare hours they have each week for the good of our community, so much of what makes York special, unique, and feel like home would simply not exist. What we sometimes forget about volunteering is that in many ways it can be as life-changing for the volunteers as it is for the city and community. Research from the British Heart Foundation found that 91% of people who volunteer, find that it improves their career options and employability, opening up opportunities they never thought possible. Helping others can really help you too, as it increases your social interactions and

introduces you to new worlds you’d never otherwise get to see. This month, we’re encouraging anyone who does have a few spare hours each week or month to sign up and help wherever or however they can. You really cannot underestimate the difference it could make to our community, city and the impact it might have in your own life. Whether that’s a few hours at a charity shop, care home or something more long-term— who knows how much of an impact you can make. If you’re feeling inspired take a good read over the next couple of pages to hear about all the local charities that are looking for willing helpers — hopefully you find your perfect fit!

Do something amazing! Support your local Hospice as a volunteer, where there’s something to suit everyone. At the moment we particularly need volunteers in our shops, and to support our Sunflower Wellbeing Hub.

REVIEW Afternoon Sea at Pearly Cow When it comes to a treat on a Saturday lunchtime or afternoon, us York residents are all more than used to enjoying a traditional Afternoon tea, the scones, finger sandwiches and cakes never go out of style and have been a part of our habits for over a century. That being said, even the pastimes we love the most shouldn’t be immune from innovations and refreshing adaptations. Pearly Cow in Bootham have done exactly that. This year they’ve been taking York’s food scene by storm with their Afternoon Sea, a savoury tiered seafood spectacular. It celebrates local food in a new and exciting manner — by showcasing the best seafood produce from Yorkshire’s legendary 90 miles of coastline, alongside some crab imports from Scotland. It’s the ideal setting for those of us without the sweet tooth necessary to enjoy a full offering of cake and scones.

Even though Pearly Cow only opened earlier this year, it already feels part of the furniture in this historic city. A large part of that success is due to the idyllic restaurant building itself — they’ve nestled in a Grade II listed regency townhouse that is (to our shock!) only a ten minute walk from the Minster. Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome from their wonderful staff. As we’re led through to our cosy corner table we couldn’t help but be taken aback by the masterfully decorated room. It’s busy but tranquil, light and airy, with high ceilings and art-covered walls — their elegant cabinetry and pearlthemed lighting perfectly put us in the mood for a stylish afternoon. As we opted for the Bottomless Afternoon Sea, in no time at all the waiter comes over to fill our glasses with a delicious chilled Quatre Vin rosé, whilst also offering

us some still or sparkling water. The attentiveness of the staff genuinely changed our understanding of a bottomless meal. Rather than bringing over more drinks upon our request, they never let our glasses run dry — topping them up before you had time to finish your first glass. The first course soon arrives; a prawn cocktail with a cucumber and tomato salsa and six large oysters to share, served on ice in a giant clam shell with red wine pickled shallots. We also accepted the optional extra of tabasco sauce to accompany (of which you only need a little). The combination of the lemon juice, pickled shallots and tabasco was nothing short of delicious. Then onto the main event, presented on a three-tier stand, we were served mussels, crab and avocado on charred sourdough, scallops baked with gruyere cheese and smoked salmon scones with

horseradish creme fraiche. My favourite however, had to be the mussels. These were the largest and freshest mussels I’ve ever tasted and the mariniere sauce was mouthwateringly luscious. Definitely a game changer! Throughout the seafood feast the staff continued to refill our rosé which accompanied the flavours brilliantly. We very much enjoyed our relaxing and chic afternoon in the city of York, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that this Afternoon Sea blew us out of the water! We will definitely be returning as soon as we can. Pearly Cow is part of No.1 by GuestHouse, York and so on the same site there’s also a spa, next time we might make a full day of it and upgrade to a spa treatment! FUN IN THE WINTER SUN As the summer 2023 season comes to a close, and the nights draw in, our clients have started thinking ahead to their winter breaks. From sandy beaches to the ski slopes, and everything in between — there’s no better way to escape the winter blues than a late year trip. MALAGA - SPAIN If you’re looking for a quick weekend break, Malaga might be the perfect spot— you’ll arrive in three hours to a lovely climate that averages at over 17 degrees (even in December!). We can often overlook Malaga as nothing more than the arrival airport for the Costa Del Sol, but it’s also home to some of Spain’s most fascinating cultural spots, including the Picasso Museum! Spend a weekend sampling local dishes in a tapas restaurant and picking up a pastries at the Atarazanas Central Market. Despite the milder temperatures, you can still enjoy a more festive feel at the Malaga Christmas lights & markets, due to take place from 25th November – 6th January.

OBERGURGL - AUSTRIA If a snowy winter setting is more what you have in mind, then why not hit the slopes in the Austrian Tyrol village of Obergurgl. At 1927 meters above sea level, you can be sure it’ll be a white Christmas! State of the art facilities like queue-free modern lifts and immaculate slope grooming, mean you’ll certainly make the most of all the snow with a seamless ski experience. When you’re ready for a break from the slopes, enjoy some Austrian wine tasting with a local experience sommelier. You can also visit the nearby 007 Elements Mountain Museum in Solden, or swap your skis for skates and enjoy ice skating. Offering 36 beginner, 56 intermediate & 20 advance runs, the resort is great for all grades of skier. THAILAND No two trips to Thailand are the same; even if you’ve already experienced the bright lights of Bangkok, now’s your time to explore the temples of Chiang Mai or the unspoilt island of Koh Yao

Noi. With a wide range of large resorts, as well as small boutique properties all offering villas with private pools— Thailand will accommodate everyone’s budget. We recommend including a stay at Elephant Hills,Thailand’s first tented luxury accommodation — you can take a jungle trek through the Khao Sok National Park, feed and interact with Asia’s largest land animal and spend your evening enjoying local dancing and cooking presentations. CRUISING Unpack once but experience somewhere new each day. Whether you choose to sail through the Caribbean, the Canary Islands or even French Polynesia; there is a wide range of cruising available this winter. If you are a first time cruiser, finding the right cruise ship for you is key, from small ships taking just a couple of hundred guests to a larger resort-style cruiser, our role is to make sure you are aware of the offerings available so you can make an informed choice on what is right for you.

SEARCH FOR THE AURORA BOREALIS Is seeing the Northern Lights on your travel wish list? Aurora season runs from the end August – mid April. Whilst viewing cannot always be guaranteed, there are a number of destinations around the world where your chances are higher. Wherever in the world your winter 2023/24 plans take you we look forward to discussing your travel plans with you. Visit us at 88 Main Street, Fulford or call 01904 623444.
