HOROSCOPES YORK
VIRGO
STARSIGN OF THE MONTH: VIRGO
23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
This is a particularly important month for women who work for themselves, and it’s important on three levels. One is that there is some victory and triumph in some kind of longstanding dispute. Two, there is a greater degree of fiscal fluidity making its presence felt. Three, you’ll be making important investments, both financially and emotionally — this leads to a greater degree of pleasure and harmony in all affairs of the heart.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
Situations concerning divided loyalties crop up on a number of occasions throughout September and although these may involve different circumstances, the theme is always the same. Do you do
STARSIGN OF THE MONTH
23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
what is right for yourself or do you do what you feel you ought to for the benefit of others? The easiest pathway is to put those others first, but the right and more challenging pathway is to put your own interests first. Which way will you jump?
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV
There will be a tremendous shift in energies throughout September, which should turn out to be a very good month for all parent/ child relationships. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was news of a pregnancy or a birth. Emotional harmony at its height for middle and later aged ladies, and romantic vibes very strong for women in their 40’s and 50’s. Seeds sown many moons ago now begin to shoot and burst into flower – and this is just as applicable in the workplace as it is in personal affairs.
SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC
Changing fortunes this month –which should be really good news
if you haven’t been getting what you’ve wanted and if other people have been standing in your way. New work routines will fall in your favour, but it may mean learning new skills and taking on extra responsibility. Social aspects rather mixed and variable, with some strong travel aspects cropping up more than once during the course of the month. Relationships okay, if a bit predictable.
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN
In some ways a rather introspective month, when no matter what is happening at work or in the home, your thoughts will be turning inwards as you assess where you’ve come from, where you are, and where you’re going. Other people might accuse you of being a bit quiet or even a bit moody, but the fact of the matter is that you just need a bit of time and space to yourself to get your thoughts in order – and it is vitally important that you make this clear to everyone close to you, especially
lovers and partners.
AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB
Very good outlook for younger members of the sign who are taking their first tentative steps along the career pathway. Expect to be given extra responsibilities and promotions, even though this might not bring greater financial reward at this time. Older members of the sign will be influenced by the thoughts and actions of younger people (younger males in particular) but this energy should work to your advantage, so don’t resist it!
PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
All things being equal this should be a most satisfying month in just about every aspect of your life. You will have a bit more free time, so it should be in your interests to get out and about a bit more, and make a point of looking for a bit more fun out of life. Even the most elderly of Piscesians will benefit from this way of thinking, and if people are telling you to act your

age, you might want to ask them what age they are referring to!
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
Not the easiest of months! You’re going to have to fight hard for everything you get, and there’ll always be someone who ignores the hard work you’ve put it but wants a share of the credit. This is really going to make you angry, but anger can be a positive emotion if it pushes you into saying things and doing things you should have said and done ages ago. You may ruffle a few feathers… Good!
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
The summer (what we had of it) has gone and now autumn beckons. Normally you’d take a dim view of this but this September is an important month for finding success on the work scene and for receiving a few accolades and well deserved compliments. A long term project comes to successful fruition, and cash aspects are unusually favourable. Relationships intensify in their levels of importance.
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
While Gemini ladies tend to carry on as usual, there is a new burst of ambitious energy affecting gentlemen of the sign, who increasingly follow a more independent pathway where jobs
and careers are concerned. They find the courage to lead in romantic relationships. This is not a month for holding back, but rather for talking the talk and walking the walk. Success comes to those who are determined to find it.
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
A good money and business month, especially the self-employed. Financial gains also come in the form of payments of any monies owed to you. This may make you a little over confident, and you need to resist the temptation to spend more than you can afford, especially on things you don’t really need. It is a time for gathering in, not for splashing out. Other people, partners in particular, show strength in their support for you.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
In the face of a challenge or an obstacle, you have a choice. Either back away and wait for a better time to move forward, or deal with it head on and get it over with. I advocate for the latter pathway, and after some dithering, I think this is the pathway that you will follow — to your delight and surprise you’ll realise that it wasn’t such a great obstacle after all! Gentlemen of the sign will be particularly pleased by their new status in relationships.

WALKING WITH THE WANDERER
Directions
Fairburn Ings and Ledsham
A good proportion of this walk is in the RSPB’s Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve, where if you’re lucky you might even spot a Kingfisher. The remainder traverses the undulating countryside found to the south of Ledsham. Despite the proximity of the A1(M), the area is surprisingly quiet and rural. Entry to Fairburn Ings is free unless parking.
Is This Walk For Me?
This is a relatively short and undemanding walk. There are a few ups and downs but none are steep or long. Paths are generally well-demarcated although some care is needed to keep on route between Direction Points 4 and 5. A few sections can be muddy and slightly overgrown. There are two stiles.
Getting There
Fairburn Ings is 25 miles from York via the A64 and A1(M), leave at junction 47 to take the A656, then follow Back Newton Lane to the reserve. The most convenient starting point is the RSPB carpark at Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve. However, there is a charge for non-RSPB members. An alternative option is the roadside parking near the church in Ledsham. There are no feasible public transport options from York.
What To See
The main attraction is the large Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve, which you’ll see half of on this walk. All Saints Church in Ledsham is one of the oldest in Yorkshire, dating from well before the Norman Conquest.
Refreshments
Light refreshments are available from the shop at Fairburn Ings Visitor Centre. Alternatively the Chequers Inn at Ledsham is open from 11am daily and serves food for lunch and in the evenings.
Fairburn Ings and Ledsham
Time: 2 1/4 hours Distance: 5 miles
1. From the carpark, take the path towards the visitor centre (if starting from Ledsham, turn right into the carpark from the entrance gates). Unless entering the visitor centre, follow the path left with the building to the right. Keep right at a junction following signs to the Pickup Hide (the boardwalk to the left is currently closed – when reopened follow it left, then turn left when a hard surface path is met — this will shorten the route by several hundred metres). Go left before the hide (not up the ramp) following the path as it curves left. Continue on the clear path, going right at a metal gate and a wooden screen, up a gentle slope.
2. After approaching a metal gate near the top of the slope, turn left (signed Riverbank Trail). The route now continues on this trail, ignoring all paths off. Initially the path goes through an area of fire damaged scrubby trees, then it’s atop a bank in young woodland with the river to the right and a large lake left. Eventually, after well over a mile, the path reaches a kissing gate.
3. Turn left here away from the river on a stoned track through trees, but keep the lake visible at intervals to the left. At a metal gate continue on a track which becomes a tarmac street. Continue to the road on the edge of Fairburn village.
4. Turn left on the road. In about 200 metres just before the road goes downhill,
cross and turn right on the tarmac towards Beckfield Lane. Where this divides in about 100 metres, go right. Continue ahead on a narrow path after a house entrance. At the field, follow the narrow path between wire fences. Where this path ends, keep to the left edge of the large field. You’ll meet a kissing gate that will give you access to a large grassy field; initially keep to the top of the slope beside a wire fence then follow the hedge to the right. After about 250 metres the grassy path splits by some larger trees on the right. Here head left, down the slope towards a gate that will be visible in the trees ahead.
5. Cross the strip of woodland to a stile. Go over and move half-left on a faint track, this will take you over the grass field where you can follow the hedge. Continue as the field narrows but watch out for a kissing gate on the right. Go through this to follow a clear path in the trees, soon reaching a path fork. Go left down-slope to follow the wood edge to a stile. After this keep near the field edge right by a line of beech trees and turn left to reach a road. Turn left on the road into Ledsham.
6. Stay on the road as it sharply bends left, bringing you to the church (to visit, take the higher pavement and enter the churchyard). About 20 metres beyond the left bend, stop following the road as it moves right but go ahead (left) on Newfield Lane. (If starting from Ledsham by the main church entrance, go ahead
YORK LIFE 16
then right down Newfield Lane). In about 100 metres go left (not ahead into Manor Garth) on a road marked ‘Private Road Bridleway Only.’ Continue as this becomes a well-defined track, at first over open fields before moving to the edge of
woodland for more than a mile until you reach a road. Cross the road but take the track slightly to the left across the rough grassy area. This leads to another road and the entrance to Fairburn Ings carpark (if starting from Ledsham continue from Direction Point 1).

"WHY NOT GO TO "BOLTON? "
Tracking Back - Bill Hodson
This month we had the privilege of sitting down with Bill Hodson, a former York City Council official, on the launch of his debut novel — Tracking Back. It’s a thrilling detective story set in the unlikely world of Bolton Wanderers Football Club.
The novel follows Sarah, a lawyer who becomes embroiled in a complex criminal plot when dealing with her late father’s estates. After reluctantly donning the role of detective, Sarah and her associate Taylor explore the tragic and desperate lives of many of Bolton’s legendary retired football players.
YORK CAMERA CLUB
The Club has been bringing together York’s photography community since 1952. Everyone who has an enthusiasm for taking photos are welcome to sign up and join — whether you're beginners, serious amateurs or total professionals. The club meets at 7:30pm on Thursdays for Club evenings. These evenings consist of a mixture of exhibitions and photographic talks from established professional photographers. Visit www.yorkcameraclub. co.uk to find all the details you need about upcoming meetings.
The first thing Bill tells me is “it's got a football theme but it's not really about football. It's really about the place that football has in society.” Instead he uses the backdrop of football as the starting point for a pageturning mystery.
Constructing an extraordinary plot from the root of somewhere that seems so ordinary was a deliberate choice: “when you start contacting publishers and agents, they'll often say we're looking for people who will take us to a place
we've never been, and usually they mean an exotic place.” Bill decided to instead use somewhere closer to home, as he questioned “Why not go to Bolton?” Writing about the town where he grew up brings the plot to life: “because I’ve based [it] on real places there’s a kind of universality about [it].” (sic)
As the former Director for Housing and Social Services at York City Council, Bill has used his real experience and understanding of local social issues to reinvent himself into a writer. “In the book, when the detective Taylor starts to go and interview people, he meets people who are in a terrible situation and that certainly is reflective of what I found in such settings.”
Above all else Bill’s promise to readers is entertainment: “I would like to think that when people read it, they feel ‘I've not wasted my time.’ This has been interesting. I've been stimulated. I've been challenged a little bit and I've been entertained.”
Head over to www.youtube.com/@BillHodson to hear an extract or visit www.bookguild. co.uk to pick up a copy.

If you’re in the mood to try somewhere new for your Friday takeaway this week, we can’t speak highly enough of Top Wok Chinese takeaway in Osbaldwick. The lovely family-run business are already off to a frying start after opening in February, and will make an immediate favourite for anyone who's been to the Mulan restaurant on Clifton Moor, as Maggie and her family who have just opened Top Wok, are the former owners!
Maggie told us: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be working in the Osbaldwick area, after 20 years in the industry we’ve never felt such a warm welcome. We’re so proud to be paying back the community with some hospitality of our own, through the delicious items on our menu. We look forward to serving more customers from all over York as we grow the business in the coming months.”

Dacre, Son and Hartley are Yorkshire’s largest independent estate agent firm, running the property market from 20 locations across the county. They’re also one of its oldest, having celebrated their 200th anniversary in 2020, so it was exciting news when they opened an office in York last summer. In April they then relocated their office to an impressive double-fronted showroom in Micklegate, with Branch Manager Claire recently joining to spearhead operations. With lots of experience in the property market, Claire is naturally excited to bring her expertise to the York community. She had this to say: “York has a gem of a property market, which is largely insulated from what happens in other areas of the country.” The added advantage of having 20 strategically positioned offices across

YORK ENVIRONMENT WEEK 2023
Inspired by the powerful call for “climate action on all fronts” from the UN Secretary General, York Environment Week — the citywide sustainability festival, is returning for September 2023 with an ambitious new purpose.
The 2023 theme of ‘everything, everywhere, all at once’ is expected to drive environmental progress throughout the city, inspiring changes to everyday residential life as well as to the practices of bigger scale businesses; aiding in conservation at the same time they promote zero-emissions.
They explained: “We hope that YEW23 will help us all to imagine and create a better future for our city — fairer, healthier and
greener. Whatever your age or community, we hope that you will find a way to join us and make 23 September - 1 October a week of ‘everything, everywhere, all at once’ that will take our efforts to another level.”
One to mark in your calendar is the How to make your home more energy efficient session at Tang Hall Community Centre. It’s going to be run by Green Building Renewables, a York-based leading national renewables business who will be available to answer questions on everything related to energy efficiency and sustainable business practice. To find out more information and for a full timetable of events, head to www. yorkenvironmentweek.org.uk.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their passenger service in style, turning their annual steam gala into an extravaganza to show off a team of locomotive superstars, including the legendary ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ engine.
Visitors will experience four action-packed days from Thursday the 21st until Sunday the 24th September. The experience makes for a chance to see the beautiful scenery of our home as NYMR’s first passengers did on steam trains 50 years ago.
Chris Price, the NYMR’s CEO, said “Celebrating 50 years of the railway is an incredible achievement. We are so grateful to each and every member of staff and volunteers who continue to spread the joy and knowledge of steam trains to all of our visitors. The preservation of the railway means future generations can enjoy it for years and years to come.”

Unlock York’s history
York Unlocked is the unique chance to witness 70 of the city’s most iconic buildings as never seen before, and every single one is completely FREE to explore. It returns on the weekend of the 7th8th of October after unprecedented success last year, when more than 20,000 residents and tourists alike uncovered hidden treasures throughout York.
The favourites that made 2022 special are returning, including the Assembly Rooms, Duncombe Place, and King’s Manor, and they are backed up by some brand new exclusive spaces; like Bishopthorpe Palace, the Archbishop’s Walled & Pleasure Garden and the Minster Refectory. This year’s event will also feature a special ‘Architecture of the Ouse’ cruise in collaboration with City Cruises and new ‘insider tours’. Kathy M. King, founder of York Unlocked is excited to be expanding
TRIED & TRUSTED

This special event enables you to see familiar places through fresh eyes and explore these hidden treasures across one fabulous weekend. Whether you are an architecture buff with a tick-list of specific buildings or a family seeking to see the city in a different light, York Unlocked is guaranteed to inspire, delight and intrigue.” This October offers the unique chance to hear and see some of York’s untold historical stories; walk your way through the open doors of some iconic buildings to unlock some truly unforgettable memories. Todd’s exclusive offer for Your Local Link readers is extending through until the end of September. If you didn’t get the chance last month, now is the time to treat yourself to a new kitchen appliance!
If you have an old and inefficient kitchen appliance this could be THE best time to upgrade to a new energy efficient model — an upgrade to a modern equivalent could mean savings of over a hundred pounds every year!
For example, if you have a vented tumble dryer that you use once a day, on average it will be costing you over £600 a year to run (even a modern C energy dryer will cost £523 per year) – in comparison a modern heat-pump dryer costs only £179 per year to run, a mind-blowing saving of £421 a year. Now the really surprising bit – you can actually BUY a heatpump dryer for less than that! Admittedly it’s not as efficient as the best out there, but it will pay for itself multiple times during it’s lifetime.
The maths speak for themselves, upgrades simply make sense, however at Herbert Todd’s we’re determined to take things a step further. That's why we're offering an exclusive service for our loyal Your Local Link readers — we'll recycle your old appliances for free. We estimate this offer alone is worth £50 per appliance.
If you’re thinking of upgrading then please come in for a chat — some of these new technologies need to be explained so you understand there are some limitations. That’s what we’re here for.
We hope to save you some money very soon!
To find out more about their fantastic reader offer, visit the showroom at Monks Cross Dr, Huntington or you can give the team a call on 01904 628676 to find out more information.
Example costings are provided to us by Youreko.com and assume energy costs at 30p/kWh.
We think it's important for our readers to have a say on the brilliant work done by all of our brilliant local advertisers. As part of our Tried & Tested: Reader Approved initiative — we want to hear about your personal experiences. Send us the details and we will publish them in our magazine and online!

September in the garden
With September finally here, the glorious summer sun is set to be replaced by autumn’s cruel winds — take nothing for granted and prepare for the fleet of falling leaves that are about to inundate your garden. Don’t forget to make the most of your summer blossoms with cuttings and seed collections before it’s too late!
MAKE SURE TO MULCH
September soil is a hotbed for mulching; it’s warm, so you’ll trap in enough heat and moisture to keep winter weeds at bay — this protects roots from frost and helps prevent soil from washing away in storms and harsh wind, creating protection for months to come.
CLEAN OUT YOUR POND BEFORE WINTER SETS IN
Allowing vegetation to grow up over your pond can be seriously dangerous for 'its' little ecosystem, so make sure you take all the necessary steps to keep it well oxidised. Begin to clear away any falling or rotting vegetation as soon as you see it and stop falling leaves from building up at all costs. Don’t be scared to implement a pond net to cover over the whole water area if your pond is under trees. If you do take this step, keep a watchful eye over the netting to make sure you don’t trap frogs and hedgehogs in it.
PREPARE FOR AVIAN ATTACKS
With plenty of bird species, including Starlings, migrating back to the UK for the winter your vegetable patch is set to be under assault; to prepare for their return, make sure your defences are stronger than ever by renetting with some pea and bean support net.
COLLECT RIPE SEEDS FROM YOUR FAVOURITE FLOWERS
You’ll know the time is right once seedpods have changed from green to brown, as flowers begin to reach the end of their season. September is the last month you’ll get enough dry and sunny weather to easily split and extract the seeds. Dry them out for a few days then place the seeds in envelopes, making sure they’re well labelled, ready to be sown again in the spring — to give your favourites a new lease of life.

Exseeding Expectations
York Community Woodland, the 78-hectare green dream of Forestry England and York Council, has been made into a reality by the inspirational efforts of 400 local volunteers. The site, near Knapton to the west of the city, set to work in 2019 with the ambitious goal of planting 50,000 trees by the end of this year. Organisers and volunteers have blown this out of the water — in February they announced the planting of their 85,000th tree, almost doubling their target! Their hard work has not gone unnoticed, just last month York Community Woodland was recognised by the Royal Forestry Society and the Forestry Commission who agreed it was the deserving recipient of the John Bobby Award for forestry. Winning the award will come as great encouragement to the organisers but readers should be sure that this is only the beginning for the project, their real goals are long term — to offset the impact of emissions and make York a carbon neutral city, all whilst producing a green recreational space for residents to visit.
Cllr Jenny Kent, City of York Council’s joint executive member for Environment and Climate Emergency, said: “As well as creating a beautiful green space for future generations to enjoy, the woodland is a vital part of our plan to become a carbon net-zero city by 2030.” It now looks to be well ahead of schedule on its long term target of growing 210,000 trees in the next few years, one for each resident of York. Head over to www. forestryengland.uk/article/yorkcommunity-woodland for all the details on how you can help out.

The Ultimate Autumn Berry
One of the advantages of raspberries, compared to other soft fruits (horticultural speak for berries), is that they can be harvested over a long season. Unlike blackcurrants, which are ready from late June to early August, or gooseberries, which, are usually all done by the end of summer, raspberries can be harvested fresh from June until well into autumn. Even strawberries don’t have this staying power. If grown in the garden, Strawberries peak in mid-June to early July. Commercial growers may extend the season through the use of ploytunnels and other horticultural trickery but in a fair fight
traditional seasonal strawberries are easily outlasted by raspberries. The reason raspberries have a longer season is that there are two types with different cropping periods. The traditional and still more commonly grown raspberry is the ‘summer fruiter’ that crops from late June to mid-August. There are numerous varieties of this type, often prefixed Glen or Malling. Summer fruiters produce an abundance of berries over a relatively short period of three to four weeks. This means, if raspberries are in high-demand through the summer, several varieties are needed to ensure continuous berry production. Autumn fruiting raspberries, however, have a different habit. Known technically as ‘primocane’ varieties, they produce berries on canes made
the same season. Summer types, in contrast, carry their berries on canes made the previous year. When it comes to the cropping, unlike their summer cousins, autumn fruiters don’t have a peak of berry production which rapidly tails off. There’s no glut and bust: autumn fruiters produce modest but sustained pickings from August through to October.
The most common autumn fruiting raspberry is the long established variety Autumn Bliss. Indeed, for many years this was the only one available for domestic growers apart from the yellow berried, and in my experience weak growing, novelty variety: All Gold. Recently several new types have been developed, notably, Polka and Joan J. I’ve grown both of these for several seasons now and found them to be superior to Autumn Bliss. Berry size is better and the canes more robust. If you grow Autumn Bliss therefore, you may wish to consider giving these new types a try, especially if the old canes are ailing, as they tend to do after ten or more years of cropping. If you want to grow raspberries but only have space for one type it may be worth going for the autumn types in preference to the
summer croppers. In addition to the longer fruiting period, they’re generally easier to manage. Pruning is simple. As the fruit is carried on new canes, the old ones are simply cut out completely, that is to ground level, in late winter. This also means minimal supporting paraphernalia is required. All that’s really necessary, assuming the canes are grown in a row, is to keep them from sprawling as they grow through the summer with strong string strung from posts. Another advantage of autumn fruiters, compared to summer types, is that they are not usually taken by birds. Except after heavy bouts of rain the berries also seem less susceptible to moulds.
There’s a lot to be said for autumn fruiting raspberries. It’s a bonus to have raspberries fresh from the plot well in autumn. They even outlast the blackberries, the berries most often associated with the season of mellow fruitfulness, continuing to give quality pickings well into October and sometimes beyond if the weather is kind.

It’s impossible to ever do enough preparation before you take the massive decision of choosing the Primary School for your child — it’s probably the biggest step of their little life so far.
All of us want to be sure to find not only a good school, as a place to learn, but the perfect fit for your child to grow within their specific individual needs. With so many options everywhere you look, the process can get a bit overwhelming and some great schools can slip under the radar. One place you definitely don’t want to miss is Poppleton Road Primary School. The school prides itself on being a happy, friendly and caring school with a focus on instilling a long term adoration for learning within its’ pupils, that they carry with them for the rest of their lives. To make your decision even easier, Poppleton Road are offering parents the chance to experience the school firsthand, so you don’t have to rely on what you read from afar to feel assured you’re choosing the right place.
If you’re curious to learn a little more about how your little one might fit in, there’s an open evening next month on the 25th of October at 6:30pm, for parents to take a closer look at the environment of the school, meet staff and ask as many questions as they like.
If you would like to visit during the October open evening visit www.poppletonroadprimary.co.uk or call 01904 806522 for more information about the school.
I think I speak for all of us when I say we couldn’t be more glad to have seen the back of the pandemic, being shut up inside and unable to see friends, family or attend usual social commitments became unbearable. While most of us have since been able to go out and socialise like never before, it’s important to appreciate that for the more vulnerable members of our community, moving past that sense of loneliness hasn’t been as easy. Luckily in York, local charity York Cares are here to help. They make it their mission to reduce social isolation and loneliness for some of York's older residents through a special programme of free Social Clubs.
Fine tune your skills
Life can get busy in September, whether you’re starting a new job or getting your little ones ready for a new school year. However it’s important to make time to learn new skills along the way and nothing compares to picking up a new instrument — no other pastime gives you the skill to bring your favourite songs to life from the comfort of your living room. Lee Cocker’s Guitar School has all the tools to release your musical potential. It’s said that even John Lennon didn’t pick up his first guitar until he was already 14 years old, so it’s never too late to unlock

Babs Ashbluff, Female,10 yrs
Lovely Lady Babs has had an unfair amount of upheaval and change for such a lovely lady at this time in her life. Having previously been taken in as a pregnant stray she has lived a long and peaceful life. Unfortunately, Babs’s owner had a deteriorating health problem so despite her best efforts, she had no choice but to hand her over into our care. In spite of it all, Babs has put on a brave face, showing how much of a a dear little soul she really is! Babs adores attention and so would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a calming feline presence who will just sit by your side whatever kind of day you’re having.
Captain Cool, Male, 5yrs
This very handsome chap was brought into our care after his previous owners had to move home and couldn’t take him along with them. As well as being lip smackingly gorgeous, our Captain Cool is also a very affectionate boy who always races towards us when we go in to see him! This lovely lad is as cool as a cucumber and takes everything in his stride. Even his missing eye seems to be of no real loss to him! The Captain would be happiest in a home that boosts some prime sunbathing spots and some nice people he can wine and dine with al fresco style! In return you will have a feline companion with bags of personality and a guaranteed friend for life!

REVIEW
Afternoon Tea at The Principal Hotel
Afternoon Tea is one of those proper British institutions, like Wimbledon or the ashes, every time you sit down to it; you feel more proud of where you come from. So when I was invited by The Principal Hotel to review their new afternoon tea menu, only a week on from England’s (almost) historic victory over the Aussies, you can imagine I was brimming with pride. They’ve chosen to highlight their relationship with York’s chocolate history for this latest adaptation, as the city’s oldest hotel (dating back further than even the first ashes test) for their 145th anniversary they’ve transformed the menu into a celebration of chocolate. Each guided step we take toward our seats feels like a step back in time, the garden room is beautifully preserved and feels as welcoming as it did to guests and resident visitors like myself a century ago. Our’s is a window seat with views of the Minster — serving as a reminder of how central the Principal is, you can quite literally just wander in from the street. The staff were nothing short of wonderful, informative and welcoming and the
glass of champagne that waits for us at the table is almost equally as welcoming.
In no time at all our first course arrived, a delicious plate of finger sandwiches; cucumber egg, salmon —all the favourites you can imagine, accompanied by a Wensleydale Cheese & Caramelised Onion Tartlet. While these were a brilliant introduction, it’s fortunate the staff were forward-thinking enough to remind us not to fill up — better to box up and take some sandwiches home than not enjoy the chocolate course.
Then that moment I’d been counting down the days for arrives— a mountain of cake, brownie, macaroon and scone is elegantly heaped in front of us. Sharply followed by a refreshing pot of loose-leaf tea that as any reader can imagine went down a treat.
The much anticipated chocolate menu offers something for everyone but my personal favourite was The ‘Orange’, a chocolate orange delice, mousse and sponge combination.
I followed this swiftly with The Big One, a purple brioche-crumb choux bun, the menu introduces it
alongside the words ‘aimed to share’ but this advice became obsolete immediately after my first bite. It will come as no surprise to hear that this latest adaptation made for a roaring success, I hope the chocolate theme catches on as a trend for years to come — the Principal’s chef seems to have found the perfect balance. Just like one of those magical mornings when the smell of chocolate from the Nestle factory on Haxby Road catches on a breeze and is carried throughout the town, each bite transports you back in time — to York’s golden days as the chocolate city.
The Principal should be at the top of every York resident’s list, whether you’re looking for a weekend afternoon treat, or a venue for an important celebration. The table to our left had booked in to celebrate a 100th birthday, looking back on a million memories made living in York. Beyond the delicious cakes, the Principal Afternoon Tea is an idyllic backdrop for the reunions that matter.
To see the full menu and book in your afternoon tea, head to www. theprincipalyork.com.

A CANADIAN ADVENTURE
In July I was invited to attend a Specialist trip to Atlantic Canada in conjunction with the New Brunswick & Nova Scotian tourist boards.
My journey started from Heathrow Airport on the direct Air Canada service to Halifax, Nova Scotia. With an outbound flight departure at lunchtime, I was able to take the train from York the same day. An added bonus was that the flight was just 6 hours 20 outbound and 5 hours 31 back! This is the only direct flight service from Europe to the Maritimes.
On arrival, myself and fellow agents hired 2 cars which meant we were able to self-drive our 8-night itinerary and see just how easy it is to get around with relatively short drive times, open roads and barely any traffic.
It was around a 30-minute drive from the airport to our city-centre hotel and after checking in, we then headed out for a short city tour followed by dinner at the ‘Five Fisherman Restaurant’ with the lovely team from the tourist board
where we all enjoyed a traditional lobster dinner. Halifax is steeped in history; the city played an instrumental role caring for victims of the Titanic disaster in 1912 before suffering a tragedy of its own only five years later during the December 1917 Halifax explosion. A morning walk along the Halifax boardwalk is highly recommended! Next on our itinerary was the South Shore of Nova Scotia where we called at the famous Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse. On arrival the sea mist had rolled in, but as we walked through the village to the lighthouse it burned away, leaving us with a beautiful view.
We continued our drive through Nova Scotia visiting Annapolis Royal. This historic town was originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq tribal nation before it became home to some of North America's earliest European settlers. One of my personal favourites in Nova Scotia was the seafaring town of Lunenburg with its colourful waterfront & narrow streets. Our time in Nova Scotia came to an
end and we then drove to the ferry terminal in Digby and took the ferry to Saint John, New Brunswick. After a short crossing of just over 2 hours, there was a lounge available to use and refreshments available to purchase.
After an overnight stay in Saint John, we drove to the coastal town of St Andrews-by-the-Sea. We were visiting during the whale watching season so of course we couldn’t miss this opportunity!
After a 10-minute drive, we arrived at the Algonquin resort — to spend a couple of nights relaxing. While there, I recommend you take a walk into town or visit the Kingsbrae Garden.
I spent the next few days along the Fundy Trail Parkway & Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick, an area many will recognise from this year's ‘Race Across the World’. The Bay of Fundy is known for its extremely high tides. It really is amazing to see just how quickly the tide moves. The Maritimes restaurant is a great choice if you enjoy dining locally — they serve local produce
alongside a selection of provinicial wines and craft beers. Together with the amazing scenery and very hospitable people, I would definitely love to revisit!
If you would like to know more about my trip or to discuss a possible itinerary for your future travel plans, please get in touch by calling 01904 623444 or visiting us at 88 Main Street, Fulford.
