Phew. Well, the summer is now officially over and all our hardworking and dedicated staff have returned to the Your Local Link office from their holidays. And the rest of us are back as well. Tee hee. It is always a relief to see everyone back safely from their summer adventures, not just because there’s lots of work to do to bring you the fine magazine you now hold in your hands (and because when we’re short staffed we outsource a lot of the editorial work to the local day nursery – no one tends to notice) but because we do worry. Apart from not being able to let his cat out (lest it became the owl’s supper), Dean was a little concerned that some local mad professor had been experimenting on wild animals. As you can clearly see in the photo Dean snapped, the Eagle Owl seems to have an aerial implanted in its head. We can only assume the bird got great reception on Dean’s roof. Looming birds of prey aside, this month is shaping up to be a pretty frightening one. We’ve got advice about ghost hunting in York, tips on how to spookify your garden, and all the latest on Halloween goings on in and around our city. Have fun!

Time Travel
Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing.
Instead of sitting on his bum, sipping lattes and checking Google for historical facts, this month we made Howard do some actual work and packed him off to a real archaeological dig.
This month: hidden guildhall dig During August AOC Archaeology excavated a site by the River Ouse next to the Guildhall. Members of the public (and feckless Features Writers) were invited to get involved with the digging where once stood a friary that Richard III stayed at. Did Howard find Richard's long-lost comfort blanket? Read on. Indiana Bones You might never have noticed them, but since World War Two there have been wooden buildings occupying the site next to the council's Guildhall complex, just behind Lendal. The hutments, as they were called, were recently demolished revealing an open site that has been largely empty of structures since the aforementioned Augustinian friary of the middle ages. It was here that I was given my trowel, a bucket, and told to get scraping. And scraping was the order of the day, not digging away with spades. In the day I was there I only shifted about a metre square of soil, venturing down no more than six inches. This was because everything I dug at and

excavated had to be meticulously and thoroughly, checked for tiny finds. Speaking of which, I found my first at about 10.30am. I AM AN ARCHAEOLOGIST!
Evidence Although just an inch across, the tiny piece of metal I found in the ground couldn't be immediately identified and therefore had to be recorded. I had to stop digging and let one of the professionals step in to log the exact position on the site that the find was discovered and how far down it was. It was surprising to see just how much
paperwork was involved for one little slip of metal.
Paul Clarke of AOC Archaeology gives us the lowdown on the Hidden Guildhall Dig
The layer I was digging in was (so I was told) just below that of a Victorian garden that stretched from a house on Lendal down to the river. As the friary was closed down in the 16th century following Henry VIII's dissolution, it was not known exactly what was happening on the site after that. However myself and the other volunteers were starting to find lots of animal bones and teeth, possible evidence that the land was used for grazing and agriculture.
In terms of what we found, we had a 19th century garden complete with pathway. Below this was a previously unknown track forming part of a garden dating to the beginning of the 18th century. The track was made from demolition rubble from medieval buildings that probably stood fronting onto Lendal. Below this was demolition material associated with the friary. We have learnt that this part of the city centre was under cultivation as late as 1700, which was previously unknown, as well as the layout of the 17th century garden. We can also surmise from the evidence we have that medieval friary buildings fronted on to Lendal as late as 1700 as well. It really shows us how much this part of York has changed over the years, especially when we might assume that the city centre had always been built up as it is today.
Digging deeper Later in the day I unearthed several pieces of green-glazed pottery, and then - jackpot - a small and delicate dress pin. At the same time one of the proper archaeologists found part of a fine bone comb and also carved pieces of stone from the friary itself. Being right there while all these important pieces of York's history were literally dug up was tremendously exciting and being a part of the dig was both fun and massively rewarding.

terrors My husband woke up to me punching him at one o’clock this morning.
I’ll admit, he had a point. But I was too distressed to think about it. I was still getting over the earth-shattering terror of putting on the light and finding an actual spider on the bed.
‘I expect it would have ambled off somewhere else,’ my husband said.
‘Or it would have headed straight for me,’ I said. ‘I might have woken up and found it on my face. Or I might have swallowed it.’ I’m sure I All right, so it wasn’t a massive spider. read somewhere that we swallow If it had been, I probably would have But it was worse than that. ‘There an average of seven spiders during woken up the whole street, let alone was a spider on the bed,’ I said. our lifetime. He’s used to my bedtime pillow-plumping, lavender oil-spraying and repeated lock-checking.
‘It was a small spider. You’re not in a Bush Tucker Trial,’ my husband pointed out. He can afford to stay calm. He doesn’t suffer from arachnophobia the way I do. I dread this time of year. True, there are some good things about it – the nights drawing in, the return of Strictly, the appearance of the first selection box in Sainsbury’s (usually sometime around August Bank Holiday). But the downside are the spiders, suddenly materialising from under the sofa and making a bold dash across the carpet towards –

And we’re talking huge spiders, like the monsters in Starship Troopers. I literally won’t allow my husband to leave me alone in the house until December, because I know they’re lying in wait under the DVD player. They’re harmless, my husband says. But I disagree. There is nothing benevolent about a spider. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, google a magnified image of one and you’ll see what I mean. They have eight eyes, for heaven’s sake. How can something with eight eyes have any kind of good intent? They are also highly evolved, efficient killing machines who capture their prey and then let them die slowly, with the terrifying knowledge that an even worse fate awaits them. And believe me, if the situation was reversed and that spider was as big as we are, there is no way they would be picking us up gently and putting us outside. So I didn’t lose any sleep over punching that spider last night. Although I did lose a lot of sleep over the idea that its somewhat larger mother might emerge from behind the headboard looking for it. That’s an idea I find quite hard to swallow…

strange stuff for charity It used to be a sponsored swim, or if you were really daring, sitting in a bath of baked beans. But now everyone’s dousing themselves with buckets of ice, or running while people chuck paint at them. Some people might pour cold water on the Ice Bucket Challenge, but if it raises awareness and a bit of extra cash for charity, surely it’s all good?
Not Telephone scams The latest low-life scam is a caller claiming to be from the police, wanting to check on possible identity fraud. This is a month wherein trust and judgement are put to the test, and therefore it’s an important time for finding out (a) just how strong an emotional relationship is, and (b) who your real friends are. For example, sometime between the 10th and the 15th someone will make you an offer you can’t refuse. Unfortunately, the chances are that you will refuse, (probably for all the wrong reasons), and in so doing, will close the door on some lovely opportunities, both in the boardroom and in the bedroom! You’ll be on the receiving end of some good news on the 17th, probably in connection with jobs and careers, because in connection with this, there is a boost to all levels of financial confidence during the last week of the month.

Lady Scorpions get most of their own way during October, and as they’re going to be in a happy mood, hopefully this happiness can spread a little bit, and make other people a wee bit happier too. Gentlemen may have to swallow some professional disappointment between the 15th and the 22nd, but as they move into the last week, as one door closes another opens.
A healing mood moves through October, bringing resolutions to long standing arguments. On the strength of this, relationships which have faltered should now find stronger foundations and there will be a welcome boost to all romantic and sexual aspects.
Not exactly a month for sitting on your laurels, but if you look back at what has been achieved over the last six months, you should have good cause to feel well satisfied. Against that, there are concerns regarding other peoples’ ill health, and you can’t escape some entanglement with beaurocracy and red tape – which is a nuisance but not a threat!
The acquisition of new skills and techniques will help you professionally, both in the short term as well as the long. Therefore do not be averse to new ideas, new ways of thinking, and new ways of doing things.
Massive savings throughout our range.
14
A much easier, much faster month than some you have known this year, in which things fall rapidly into place, helping you to (a) resolve a few long standing problems, and (b) form a clearer view of your own future, both the long term as well as the short. A new mood of self determination manifests itself that serves you well throughout the month and beyond.
aries (21st March-19th April) Quite an intense month on the home front, possibly with some disruption to domestic routines caused by DIY schemes or unexpected guests. It could even be both! Nice money vibes between the 8th and the14th, with overseas connections coming into focus around the 21st.
taurus (20th April - 20th May) Rather a dull and uneventful start to the month and not much change until the 10th, when the pace and tempo pick up a beat. An older person’s ill health may cause concern and there’ll be a couple of awkward professional decisions to make between the 4th and the 10th.
GEMINI (21st May - 20th June) Some clashes of will between parents and their children, and parents may be well advised to curb any criticism of their offspring’s choice of partner. There
is a “new face” coming into the family, and you’d better get used to it, because it’s here to stay!
CANCER (21 June - 22nd July) Before there can be new beginnings, there have to be a few endings – and this is a month of endings! It’s important that you don’t lose sight of the big picture, and recognise that all that happens, happens for a reason, even if you can’t see what it is. There are challenges and tests, but these are tests that you will pass, becoming a lot stronger is the process.
LEO (23th July - 23rd August) A reunion or a chance meeting with an old friend will put a smile on your face, but be warned, it may create some suspicion and jealousy from a third party. Handle this situation with care and compassion, because someone may see this as the straw that breaks the camel’s back and use it as an excuse for unnecessary and unjustifiable behaviour.
virgo (23rd August - 22nd September) A month of mixed blessings. Lots of hard work on the job scene, but with a tendency to become tired and over extended. Good money prospects, especially around the 12th, but not quite enough to do what you want to do.

Got a problem?
Of course you have. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.

h short changed I am a man in my late 40s, and I like to think I’m in good shape for my age. My family and I are going on holiday to Tenerife, but my wife and daughters won’t allow me to take my swimming trunks as apparently they’re ‘too revealing’. They want me to buy some voluminous board short things but I find my trusty Speedos are a lot more comfortable in the water. What can I do? JF, Fulford I’m going to tell you a harsh fact of life here, JF. You might well be in good shape for your age, but you are not Tom Daley. Your wife and daughters are not trying to spoil your holiday, they’re trying to spare your blushes as well as their own. Seriously, no girl wants to see her dad in a pair of budgie smugglers, it’s mentally scarring. If you’re that concerned about comfort in the water, then there are other practical styles you can choose. But leave the posing pouch at home.

h outward bound My husband recently retired. He seems to be enjoying his retirement, spending time on his computer, watching TV and going to talks and events. But I’m worried he doesn’t have many friends. I’m very outgoing, and I love going out for coffee and catching up with the girls, and I worry that he doesn’t have anyone but me to socialise with. It’s got to the point where I feel guilty for going out and leaving him. He has a couple of good friends, but he doesn’t see them very often. How can I persuade him to widen his social circle? HW, Heworth Why should he? No offence to your husband, but I’m guessing he’s never been the life and soul of the party, so why should he start now? He’s retired, he hasn’t had a personality transplant. If he’s always enjoyed his own company then the chances are he’s quite happy pottering about on his own. If anything, he’s probably sending up a few silent cheers that he no longer has to put up with the office gob trying to rope him in to works outings and the like. I reckon this is more your problem than his. You’re used to pleasing yourself from nine to five, and suddenly you feel as if your wings have been clipped. But unless your husband has actually changed the locks, no one is stopping your fun. And if his idea of a good time is watching back-to-back episodes of Countdown then don’t try to stop his, either.

h cat fight Our children, aged five and eight, have been pestering us to get a cat for ages, but my partner and I thought it would be better to start them off with a goldfish, to see if they would take on the responsibility of feeding it, cleaning the tank, etc. Needless to say, they haven’t. So now we’re stuck with a goldfish we don’t want. The trouble is, I would dearly like a cat, but now we can’t go back on what we said otherwise they won’t have learnt a valuable life lesson. Maggie, Tang Hall Let me get this straight. Your kids wanted a cat so you got them a goldfish. And now you’re wondering why they’re not interested in looking after the thing. That’s like you asking for a diamond ring, and your partner buying you a family pack of loo rolls (and before all you goldfish lovers take offence, I’m not denigrating fish. Or loo rolls. They both have a valuable place in society). I think if anyone has learnt a valuable life lesson here, it’s you and your partner. Children never take responsibility for their pets. Not after the pet in question has scratched/bitten them for the first time, at any rate. But pets can teach kids about more than being responsible. They can teach them about loving and being loved,HTtoo. So go ahead LINK and adopt a cat.APRIL_Layout But better find 1a new home for14:08 Pag 16892.14 YORK LOCAL ADVERT 16/04/2014 that goldfish first…

Krystal’s gems //MUSIC CORNER//
Band(s): The Struts + Hello Operator + Titan’s Troubadours Where: Fibbers (New Venue) When: Monday 27th October Song to listen out for: Could have been me INFO: The Struts are unapologetically Rock ‘n’ Roll. Somehow there’s an air of distant familiarity hanging around the band, have you heard it before or do you just really like it? Oh and how could I forget the incredible Hello Operator are supporting fresh from their festival stint over the summer playing Leeds, Reading and Galtres Festival. Not a gig to be missed.
Exciting
Endeavours
This Month Krystal talks about starting her apprenticeship with Your Local Link and becoming a journalist. For me, thinking about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life when I was 16 was scary and overwhelming, I wasn’t ready at all. I’m 20 now and it’s taken me this long to decide what I want to do. The point I want to hammer home is that it’s never too late to change your mind or start afresh, don’t panic if you’re 18 and you’re still not sure about it, there’s still time.

Last month I embarked upon the biggest move I’ve made so far in my adult working life. I decided to do an apprenticeship with Your Local Link. I’ve already worked at Link for a year or two now, but I’ve finally put the pieces of the jigsaw together, and found a course to parallel what I do here and what I want to do in the future. When I first started the NCTJ (National Council for the training
of journalists) Diploma there was, as expected a lot of first time
nerves, by the time I’d arrived at Darlington (bearing in mind I’m a
the best of york
somewhat nervous driver at the best of times). I’d get out of the car a sweaty mess, then to be confronted by a pay and display machine that requires you to put your reg plate details in. Could I remember my registration plate knowing I was 5 minutes away from being late? Of course not! Anyway after the initial parking hiccup, I bounded in armed with a new set of Tesco’s finest Biros and a gleaming pukka pad. The course itself is fantastic, I get to learn short hand, media law, how to report and write stories and compose a decent portfolio. It’s great that I can apply everything I learn first-hand to what I’m doing here at Link whilst raking in the real time experience.
I found this quote particularly inspiring, too.
“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.” – Eric Roth.

Keep on running..... After the great success of last year’s first ever Yorkshire Marathon, the 26 mile slog returns to our streets on 12th October. We’ve turned to our Designer Rachel, veteran marathon runner, for some tips and advice on tackling this year’s race. So you’ve stuck to the training plan meticulously, missed out on most parties because they clashed with long runs, you’ve eaten well and your body is officially a temple. Just one last thing to conquer – crossing that finish line on race day. My advice should see you through...
Rhythm: Have a music playlist with slower songs at the beginning and more up-tempo ones later on for when you feel you might struggle.
Rachel’s serious tips:
Encouragement: Have friends and family dotted around the course for support. I had people at miles ten, 15 and 22, and knowing they were there kept me going.
rest up. Get a good nigh’ts sleep the night before. Fuel: Both the evening before and breakfast on the day, stick with the same foods you’ve eaten to fuel your long training runs. Now isn’t the time to try anything new, bathroom issues can ruin race day!
Remember
safety pins for your race number!
24
PractiSe: Have a dress rehearsal by going for a run in the same clothes you are going to wear on the big day. This will ensure it is comfortable and it won’t rub anywhere it shouldn’t (see Vaseline tip below). Pace: Don’t set off too fast. Ignore everyone else and stick to your own pace.
Prepare: Train with the gels/fuel you are going to use on the day. The last thing you want is an upset tummy in the middle of Buttercrambe wood.
Forget anonymity: Wear your name in big letters on your running top. For the first 13 miles you will feel like a celebrity with people cheering your name. By mile 22 you will be questioning if what you’re doing actually constitutes self-harm. Fear not, nothing keeps you going like a complete stranger saying ‘Rachel, you’re doing amazing.’ BE AWARE: Read the signs and banners people display along the route, there are some really funny ones.
Pizza Choice | Delivery Service | Fantastic offers available | Tel: 622022 or 631818
Pee: Be prepared to ‘pee and run’ if you need to go from mile 18 onwards. If you stop at that stage in the race you may struggle to get going again. You will sink to a new low of personal hygiene, and you really won’t care as running gear dries quick... honest! Smell: Eau de Deep Heat will become your signature scent. Spillage: Practise drinking water whilst running. It’s harder than it looks.
Rachel’s less serious (but still important) tips: Poop: Not something that you really want to talk about, but ensure you’ve ‘been’ before a run. Failing that, Imodium is a runner’s best friend.
Slap: Chances are you will not look your best during a marathon (see pic far left). It is possible to run in a full face of makeup; remember there will be cameras. It’s why they invented waterproof mascara.
Boobs: If you’re anything over an A cup, you may end up with blisters in places you didn’t think possible. Use plenty of Vaseline on your inner arms to avoid chaffing. Also apply around the band of your sports bra. Buy plasters: Men - regardless of chest hair, chances are your nipples will bleed as they rub against your shiny new charity vest. Plaster up or wear a red running top to save any embarrassment! Find out more about the 2014 Yorkshire Marathon at www.theyorkshiremarathon.com

Half baked idea
What a difference a few months make. People might say they predicted England to have a poor World Cup, but there is no doubt about it – those moments before the group game against Italy, the public and pundits alike had that little thing called ‘optimism’. Now, the team don’t even beat The Great British Bake Off in a head-to-head, as more people tuned into see how a retired Merchant Navy seaman, a part-time upholsterer and an eco-friendly builder fared at making tarts, than watch England face Norway. Then a few days later, a win away to Switzerland gets everyone thinking we are world-beaters again. I must admit I have missed the vast majority of this year’s GBBO, including ‘Bin-gate’, though I do think it’s harsh that Diana woman is now being blamed for the polar ice caps melting. Not that I watched England versus Norway, I might add; I was feeling similar to the supporter who decided that watching the grouting dry in the downstairs loo was more exciting.

That’s cricket One of my own summer sporting highlights was seeing Yorkshire beat Sussex at Scarborough. Both bat and ball thoroughly deserved victory, but the events of the day were just as entertaining. As Yorkshire were blasting lots of fours, my granddad and I pondered when the first six would arrive, to which I asked if he had ever had a ball go near him in the stands. Given how long he has followed them, I was surprised when he said no. Half an hour later my granddad had gone off to the toilet as Jack Brooks smashed a massive six not far from where we were sat. Thinking he had missed it I told him about it on his return. He replied “I know, it just whizzed past my head coming back!”
Poor Sussex just couldn’t cope with the sheer brilliance of the likes of Kane Williamson, Johnny Bairstow

and Tim Bresnan who regularly found the boundary rope. It wasn’t for the lack of trying; one Sussex fielder ran full pelt after another ball heading for another four. Just escaping his dive, his sheer momentum meant he clattered straight into the advertising board which made an almighty bang. Everyone gasped at the crash landing, before one sympathetic supporter shouted “Is that board all right? Someone has spent a lot of money advertising there.” Whilst Yorkshire look to secure their first Championship title since 2001, local side Woodhouse Grange tasted victory in the Davidstow Village Cup Final at the home of cricket, Lords, after crushing Oxfordshire side Great and Little Tew by ten wickets. Congratulations to skipper Nick Hadfield and all at Woodhouse Grange. especially in America, but Brook showed tremendous guts, courage and skill. That contrasts to Audley Harrison, who is talking of another comeback whilst in the ‘Celebrity’ Big Brother house. Having seen his brutal defeats to David Haye and David Price, I think Harrison is more likely to become the only boxer in history to have been knocked out while shadow boxing than to win a World Title.

Back of the net
Back to football now and York City looked to be an early contender for being the ‘draw specialists’ after five from five in their opening fixtures, but that sequence ended thanks to a Wes Fletcher double and Michael Coulson free kick in the 3-2 win at Stevenage. Hopefully now Nigel Worthington’s men can push on and fans can see the mighty Minster men in Saturday home games against Portsmouth (4th October), Shrewsbury Town (18th) and Mansfield (25th).
Try, try, try
Rugby League counterparts the York City Knights ended their regular season by clinching the Championship League One Trophy. The team will be playing next season at Bootham Crescent whilst the new community stadium gets built, and will hopefully be playing in the league above as they hope to get promoted via the end of season play-offs, meaning they could have their final game in the Grand Final at Headingley on 5th October.

We have all the latest news from things that go vroom! In transit
Too far? It seems you are able to control everything these days with your smartphone, from toy helicopters to your house lights. But driving your car using your phone... surely that is a step too far? Not if Land Rover have anything to say about it, as their latest model, the Discovery Vision, will feature the ability to be driven "at very low speeds" via a smartphone app. The car, which will be showcased at the New York Motor Show, also includes a 'transparent bonnet' whereby the driver can see, thanks to onboard cameras, down to the road surface
from a display on the windscreen. We are a little concerned about the phone driving thing though, and it will certainly make us think twice about giving our iPhones to our kids to play with. Imagine the carnage...
Give ‘em the cold shoulder
Last month we revealed news of one nervous driver who abandoned his car on the hard shoulder after he thought his dashboard had warned him of an impending fire. Turned out it was merely telling him he was listening to an Adele song with ‘fire’ in the title. But since then The Highways Agency has revealed the details of other poor excuses for stopping on the hard shoulder, which is illegal if there isn’t an actual emergency. Here are some of our favourites:

If you’ve ever dreamt about travelling around Europe to catch all the famous sites, you might have looked into flights, hotels and hostels. But one young couple from Leeds have decided to cut back on all that awkward admin and just drive there... in a Ford Transit van they have converted into a mobile home. Stuart Humphreys, 24, and Claire Bragg, 25, bought a second-hand Transit van for £3000 and over the past two years have spent a further £6000 converting it into a home from home. It includes a wood burning stove, a double bed, and a small kitchen. But unfortunately they’ll have to keep an eye out for bushes while on their travels, as the van doesn’t have a toilet.

Adding up to
success Two of York’s leading accountancy firms have recently announced that they have merged. Number-crunching companies Hare & Co Ltd and David J. Flower & Co Ltd have joined forces and will now operate under the name Hare & Co (Incorporating David J. Flower & Co), combining a 500-strong client base. They will continue to offer accountancy and taxation services across Yorkshire. The proactive team can help with all matters of accountancy, from simple tasks like an individual’s tax returns, to larger jobs such as complete accountancy
support for businesses. They can work with a broad range of clients from sole traders and owner managed businesses, to partnerships and limited companies across many sectors. As the newly enlarged company will start to take on fresh clients they plan to take on new staff, providing jobs to the local area and to maintain the same high quality service that each separate company provided previously. n Visit www.hareandco.co.uk

Design De-mystified by Becs #4
Getting Creative Instead try an organic and flexible approach. This means that the scheme doesn’t become the idol, and you can incorporate new ideas or objects at any time.
If you’ve been following my mini-series over the past few months, you should be familiar with the first steps of the design process. By ensuring you know exactly what you want to achieve, and understanding the space you’re working with, you have set the foundations for a successful project. Now the research phase is over we can dive into the creative part!
Get a Vision:
Before stepping over any shop threshold it’s vital to Get a Vision of what your space will look like. Don’t worry if you have no clue where to start when forming ideas. Firstly: remember there is nothing new under the sun. Every designer begins by searching for inspiration somewhere. Secondly: don’t worry if you
think you’re “not creative enough”. Assuming we’re talking about a home project, all you need to do is find something that you love and run with it. There is no mythical box to tick of what is right or wrong. Remember
it’s your home! I’m often inspired by one image to begin with (whether from a location I’ve visited, a website, magazine or book), and a scheme will take shape around that as I spot other
items that compliment the initial idea. Beware of trying to implement one particular style, trend or theme wholesale. These can tire very quickly as you’re essentially adopting someone else’s ideas of what’s “right”.
You’ll no doubt be familiar with mood boards; this stage is where they really come into play. If you’re not one to use Pritt Stick and torn magazine pages, try the online version: Pinterest (my latest addiction). Try to be critical about the images you collect and ask yourself why you like them. Not everything that catches your eye will fit your lifestyle or serve the right purpose for you. Eventually you should see a theme emerging, which will inform your choices of décor in the next phase.

In or Out?
Once you’ve clarified your ideas and a scheme is emerging, it’s time to write a shopping list that prioritises what you Need vs what you Want. This will help you search for items that fit into your scheme, and omit the ones that don’t. Don’t just cover the obvious big-ticket items such as furniture, but think in 3D: Floors, walls, ceilings, Utilities etc.
Make a Plan:
sockets, or additional light fittings can all be pre-planned, and you can use it to check whether the items you are looking at in store or on line will actually fit. Top Tip: don’t just consider the final resting place, but think about access too. It’s no good having a wardrobe that fits if you can’t get it up the stairs (speaking from experience…) My top 5 go-to websites for inspiration:
If you have already measured up your space and drawn your plan (as I suggested in part two of this series), you can now use it to play around with the various elements of your scheme. Placement of furniture, new

To celebrate 30 years since its release, The Yorkshire Museum is screening the 80s supernatural romp Ghostbusters this Halloween. To get you in the mood here are five haunted places in York to do some real-life ghost busting of your own. The York Theatre Royal The theatre is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a nun known as the Grey Lady. Apparently, when the site was occupied by the medieval St Leonard’s Hospital, a nun was bricked up in a windowless room for falling in love with a nobleman. However gruesome her end may have been, an appearance by the Grey Lady is suppose to herald great luck for the current performance.

35 Stonegate Over 500 years old, this house on Stonegate is said to be one of the most haunted in the country. Apart from Queen Victoria calling in for tea in 1835, other visitors include Tom, a spectral creature who violently grabs people - including Derek Acorah when he visited to film his TV show. Altogether 14 different spooks have been identified as inhabiting the property.
The Treasurer’s House The National Trust property in the shadow of the Minster might be a draw for crowds, but this is one group of people you definitely don’t want to bump into. In 1953, plumber Harry Martindale was working in the house’s basement when an entire Roman Legion strode by. Visible only from the knees up, it was later discovered that a major Roman road once ran straight through the Treasurer’s House.
The Golden Fleece Pub Supposedly the most haunted pub in York, the Golden Fleece dates back to 1503 and boasts many strange happenings. Most famously is the ghost of a Canadian Airman who killed himself in the pub in 1945 and who now haunts the pub by appearing to guests in the middle of the night and moving objects around the room. Bedern Although now filled with modern new housing, Bedern was once one of the poorer areas of the city. An decrepit orphanage stood on the site, ruled over by a insane man who would keep the bodies of dead children in a locked cupboard. Since then people have reported the sensation of a cold small hand trying to take their own as they pass through the archway from Goodramgate.

Double glazing After a while the seals used in some double glazing can break down and result in condensation forming between the sheets of glass. This looks unsightly, ruins your view and even reduces the window's energy efficiency. But before you tear out the whole lot, remember that at Keepsafe we can replace individual panes of double-glazed glass. We offer a full range of replacement units including square leaded, diamond leaded, Georgian bar and coloured lead, along with energy efficient Pilkington K Glass and Saint Gobain Planitherm glass unit. n And that's not all! Watt?!?
We get the low-down from electrical expert Matt Todd of Herbert Todd & Son.
“Thou shalt not use excessive energy,” commanded the EU parliament, and so as of 1st September the maximum wattage allowed for a vacuum cleaner fell to 1600 watts. This led to a sudden burst of activity at many stores, ours included, as customers rushed to buy high wattage machines before they ran out. However this is one EU directive that does make sense and consequently not many of our customers bought a high wattage vacuum. Here’s why... A vacuum may seem like a simple device, but in reality it is a complex piece of engineering that uses a mixture of fluid dynamics and mechanical engineering to take electricity and make it into air watts. Like any machine the quality of the parts used and overall design will affect the performance and efficiency of the system. This means that all vacuums are not equal, and some

can generate more air watts with less electricity. Inefficient machines have masked their potentially poor performance by increasing the motor power (often over 2000w or 2Kw) thereby making them very expensive to run. An efficient future By forcing manufacturers to decrease the wattage and adhere to the energy labelling scheme already adopted for other appliances (like washing machines) we can look forward to more efficient vacuums that will be every bit as good at keeping our floors clean but also help keep our energy bills down to a minimum. Looking ahead there is a real danger that the Eurocrats will get carried away again with kettles possibly coming under scrutiny. Given the above you might assume that a 1.5Kw kettle has the potential to be more efficient than a 3Kw model, but sadly no. With no moving parts and only a heating element it will simply take twice as long to boil and use almost exactly the same electricity. You can’t win them all.

Ask Chris...
Got a gardening question?
Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help
Q.
Can you tell me when to prune my raspberry canes, as they haven’t fruited very well this summer? When bought, summer fruiting raspberries have a stem of about 18 inches long. You should plant them at any time from late autumn to early spring, fanning the roots out in a shallow trench to encourage new canes to grow from them. Prune the cane on planting, but leave a portion of it intact until early summer so that the foliage it carries helps to nourish the shoots.
Q.
Can you recommend some plants for winter colour in my planters and hanging baskets, as I didn’t have much success last year? For hanging baskets you could try all viola or winter flowering pansies. At our nursery we use these with a selection of different herbs; sage in all three colours, oregano, three varieties of thyme, and Helichrysum italicum “curry plant”. All these add lots of colour through their foliage. We also use small shrubs for colour, such as choisya, euonymus, leucothoe scarletta, osmanthus tri-colour, and winter flowering heathers. For nice trailing plants near the bottom of the basket you could use different coloured
ivies such as veronica “blue George”, lamium white nancy white dead natal, and lysimachia “goldie locks”. All these plants are winter hardy, give good colour throughout the season, and will last well into June. A lot of these plants will make good planters and pots as well, making a riot of colour. Happy planting - it will no doubt brighten your garden on those dark winter days.
n If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.
48
As the new growing season progresses, tie new canes into position. If the odd flower appears this year, pinch it out. Make sure the canes are well supported over winter and a crop will come the following summer. As soon as the cropping has finished the fruited canes are cut out at the base and the new stem canes tied in. Where there is lots of new growth, retain only the strongest young canes - about eight per plant - and these will produce lots of fruit the following year. During the ensuing winter soft cane tips may be damaged by frost, so in late winter prune the tips to remove any damaged growth. Cane’s emerging more than 8 inches from the row should be removed, cutting them away at ground level. Happy jam making!

What really goes on in the garden shed? Gardens: boring, mundane, unexciting places? Not according to a new book published by America’s Greenwoman Publishing which, apart from featuring short stories from two Yorkshire writers, boasts 12 tales of horticultural naughtiness. Fifty Shades of Green, edited by Cheri Colburn, is a green-fingered reaction to Fifty Shades of Grey, filled with short stories about virile gods, young lovers seeking the aid of green witches, and saucy goings-on at the bottom of the garden.

But they are vastly underestimated because they can add instant height and maturity, screening, structure and all year round colour to the garden. They come in all shapes, sizes and colour, from compact forms such as Juniperus communis compressa, (that only grows two-three centimetres a year making it ideal for containers when planted with alpines), to fast growing giants like Leylandii, growing up to 90cm (three feet) a year and with the potential to reach 30m (100ft) tall. Colours vary from the bright bluegrey of Picea pungens varieties, through myriad shades of green, to the golds of Thuja ‘Rheingold’ and Chameacyparis ‘Ellwoods Gold’. Shapes are also diverse with the narrow upright pencil Cypress and Junipers, pyramidal shaped Christmas tree like forms, and low growing groundcover varieties like Juniperus tamariscifolia and ‘Blue Carpet’.
Did you know?
Conifers work well... • ...with heathers and ornamental grasses in mixed borders. • ...as focal points in more contemporary gardens. • ...in pots and containers.
Get the rootball rolling Conifers can be bought from your local garden centre, and they’ll be either container grown or rootballed. When planting time comes the rootball should not be disturbed if at all possible. Plant either September - October when there is still warmth in the soil, but it is still moist enough to water them in. Most conifers will grow happily in just about any garden soil although there are a few varieties that will not tolerate lime, such as Cryptomeria and Larix. If you have a high content of lime in your
soil, junipers and pines are the best varieties to pick. If your conifer was container grown you can plant any time of year, except when there is a frost in the ground. When planting in the summer months it is important to water regularly until the roots are established and the plant can get moisture freely without help. For the best results, at planting time dig a hole twice the size of the rootball, as this allows the soil to be loose making it easy for the new roots to spread out.
Hedge your bets If it’s a dense evergreen hedge you want, conifers are a great choice. Some of the best varieties to use are... • Taxus (Yew). These create a dense and easy to maintain hedge that will need cutting up to twice a year depending on variety. • Leylandii. It receives a bad press but when it is correctly maintained and controlled they make a great hedge, growing up to three feet (90cm) a year once established. For whatever the use, or wherever you live, your garden won’t be complete without a conifer!

Myth busters A few issues back we reported on the shattering news that putting broken ‘crocks’ in the bottom of your pots can actually harm the growing plants. Since then we’ve heard of a few other ancient gardening myths being disproved so have compiled a handy list:
J Farrow
Myth: Peonies can’t be moved Truth: They can. It was Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher, who started the myth, as he believed a woodpecker would peck out his eyes if he moved the plant. He might not have been a stable person.
Tree & Garden Services
Myth: Leeks must have their roots and tops shortened before planting. Truth: Don’t, it causes growth damage. The myth was started by Roman writer Columella who never actually did any gardening. Seriously, none at all. Myth: Plant potatoes on Good Friday. Truth: Good Friday jumps around the calendar and can often occur when it’s far too cold for potatoes. Plant them in mid-April usually. The myth was started as potatoes don’t appear in The Bible and were therefore considered evil. Planting them on Good Friday made them okay. Obviously.

Bird is the word
It is of course Halloween this month, and not even fans of stately homes can get away without a fright or two. Burnby Hall and Gardens in Pocklington will be welcoming visitors old and young to enjoy their Pumpkin Festival, 27th October-2nd November. Wrap up warm and be ready for some spooky goings on in and around the lavish and gorgeous gardens which, at the height of autumn, are stunning to behold.
If there's one thing we love more than a talk about birds, it's an illustrated talk about birds. And no organisation does illustrated bird talks quite like the RSPB York Local Group. On 15th October at Temple Hall, York St John University, the RSPB welcomes you to enjoy the talk The World of Birds given by Gordon Yates, in which a variety of our feathered friends will take centre stage.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery
Q.
Ask debs @ brunswick nursery
I would like to grow a green manure to help improve my clay soil. Is it too late in the year to sow and if not, which variety would you suggest?
Q.
My garlic crop was very poor this year. The bulbs were very small and the cloves did not form very well. How can I improve next year’s crop?
Choosing the right green manure is confusing even for the experienced gardener, but it’s a matter of choosing the best one considering the time of year, soil type and what you aim to achieve. Over-wintering green manures can be sown from August as bare areas of soil start to appear after harvest. Sowing in late summer gives time to get well established before winter, but there are a couple of hardy varieties that can be sown now.
You could also try grazing rye which is one of the best green manures for overwinter use. It is a vigorous grower with a very extensive root system and excellent for heavy soils. Be aware that grazing rye release chemicals as they decompose, which will inhibit seed germination. Although the effects don’t last long these varieties are best avoided in plots where you plan to grow crops from seed. Instead grow them where you will plant tubers, sets and transplants and take advantage of the weed inhibiting effects!
Field beans do well on heavy soils and their deep roots will retrieve nutrients from deep down in the soil structure and help improve drainage on your clay soil. They also have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, which is then released for the following crop, so good for preceding a leafy crop with a high nitrogen requirement such as sprouts, cabbages or spinach. Sow seed closely to achieve good ground cover.
Green manures should never be allowed to set seed and should be dug in before the flowering stage as they breakdown quicker and contain more nutrients. This should be done several weeks before you plan to use the ground in early spring. If you have any questions about growing fruit & veg, please e-mail info@yourlocallink.co.uk
Garlic loves free-draining soil so prepare the planting area really well by digging over and adding lots of well rotted manure or garden compost. If your soil is prone to water logging in winter you could try sowing cloves into pots and growing overwinter (preferably in a cold frame or unheated glasshouse) and then planting them out in their final growing positions in early March. Late planting has a negative effect on bulb size, so ensure they are in the ground no later that the start of December. Garlic needs a cold period of two months when temperatures drop to below freezing to encourage the bulb to form. Always buy your bulbs from a reputable supplier, which will be guaranteed to be disease free and a variety suited to our northern climate. Don’t be tempted to purchase bulbs from the supermarket or local store as the chances are it will have been imported variety and the results will be disappointing. In spring apply a seaweed fertiliser to encourage foliage growth which will feed the bulb. Keep the bed weed free to reduce competition for light and nutrients. Water well during dry periods, but ease off watering when the foliage dies back to encourage dormancy and help the drying process.

Got a problem with your pet? Tracey Pulleyn of Minster Vets answers your pet questions cause more friction on their paws, while others are more sedate. It could be that your dog is running around a lot and particularly worse if majority of the walks are on footpaths. If this is so then you could either manage your walks so that some are on grass as well as the footpaths, or you can try finding a dog boot that is the appropriate size for their feet. There are lots of different types of boot on the market, from ones that are very light and more like socks, to others that are more robust and have laces or Velcro fastenings.
Q.
My dog’s paws are getting sore after long walks. What can I do to help stop this happening? Firstly I would advise you to speak to your vet about this and get them to examine your dog to ensure that there is no medical reason for your dog having soft and sensitive pads. Some dogs are very active whilst on walks, which could
If you are using boots with your dog for walks you must keep a regular check on their claws, as they will be protected from the rough pavement and will become long and could curl round into the pads. Also, particularly if they are a hairy breed dog, the hair in between the pads won’t get worn down and can matt with the heat and cause sores and lameness. Any problems, ask your vet!

Autumn Watch Things to look out for in the garden this month... Not mushroom out there During autumn lots of fungi will make an appearance, usually around wood chippings and dead logs. There are thousands of varieties that thrive in the UK, and although many of them look beautiful, be wary. There are lots of poisonous kinds of mushrooms and identifying which are safe to eat is a tricky and dangerous job. Our advice is to stay well clear or remove them carefully with gloves.
A fine pear If you grow pears, apples, grapes and nuts in your garden, October is a pretty exciting time. Harvesting your crop is best done during this month before the really cold weather sets in. While you’re collecting your fruitful bounty be sure to check your trees and plants for signs of disease and remove any affected areas. Do this now to prevent the disease spreading and contaminating next year’s crop.

I’ve never been very good at Halloween. As a child I would don a cheap plastic mask from ASDA, wrap myself in one of my mum’s nighties, and then sit in the dark watching the other kids from my bedroom window. I couldn’t see the point of trick-or-treating; I didn’t want sweets from strangers, I wanted them from my mum as then I’d definitely know there wasn’t a razor blade in that toffee apple. I was prone to melancholy. The one time I did venture out on the evening of the 31st my parents decided that I needed my older sister as chaperone. She deemed the whole thing “lame” and was apparently “too cool” for a costume. Therefore she begrudgingly followed me around, tutting at my attempts at a Transylvanian accent, and helping to start the rumour at school the next day that Howard was too afraid to go trick-or-treating on his own. Hate Expectations I didn’t start to enjoy All Hallow’s Eve until University, when fancy dress house parties were the order of the day and I had a chance to show off. I expressed my love of film and TV by dressing as a Jedi, Alex from A Clockwork Orange, and Eddie Izzard (which was my excuse for wearing a dress. I look good in dresses – email me for more details). But now that I have kids, Halloween is trickier and less treat-ier. To the kiddies Halloween is as magical and as intriguing as Christmas, so parental effort must be made to live up to
their expectations. My wife is great at expectations, craftily decorating both the house and the children. My ideas tend to be labelled as inappropriate, including last year’s costume idea which was to go as ‘the middle one’ from The Human Centipede.
Alone in the dark Last year we had a Halloween party for the wee ones and invited all their little friends and their parents. The house was filled with tiny scary monsters, shouts and screams, and gallons of spilt fruit punch. My brain shut down and I hid upstairs, convincing everyone that our youngest was tired and needed a nap. After putting the baby in the empty bath (ready-made play pen) I wrapped myself in one of my wife’s nighties and hugged a radiator until they’d all gone. And now, as the night draws near once more, I find myself unable to pin down what a child-friendly Halloween actually is. My costume idea was vetoed by the wife in July (it was ‘20 years on Peppa Pig has let herself go’). I suppose I can cash in on having an Obi-Wan Kenobi beard and go as a Jedi again. I could slap some green paint on my son and he could be Yoda. The farce is strong in this one.

Spare a thought for the veggies In preparation for last year’s Halloween I bought a tonne of little Haribo sweetie bags (they were 10p each – score!) to dish out to trick-or-treaters. However, when one particular group of pint-sized horrors arrived and I offered the bowl of sweets to them, it was met with disappointment. “Oh,” said one of the kids, “George can’t eat Haribo, they’ve got gelatine in them. George is a vegetarian.” George looked sad, as if this had been a reccurring theme to his evening. So this Halloween spare a thought for the middle class kids out there, and offer a vegetarian alternative. Olives or summat.

Sheets to the wind? Apparently an old Scottish practice involved hanging sheets in front of a fire on Halloween night. Girls would then stare at the sheets as it was believed they would see the face of their future husband. As my wife is Scottish I assume she did a similar thing in the past, saw my handsome face dancing upon the sheet, and immediately moved to York to seek me out. Give it a try girls, but just make sure you don’t use Spiderman bed sheets. You’ll never find him. Trust me I’ve tried.

Almost two in three road accidents happen when children are walking or playing, according to the AA.
With Tour de France fever still running high, more and more schoolchildren are taking to the roads on their bikes. Follow these steps and you can ensure that you stay safe: Get trained. Ask your school if they do any cycle safety courses, or get an adult to call the local road safety officer on 08458 727373 or visit www. bikeability.dft.gov.uk to find out about courses in your area. Get a grown-up to help you make sure your bike is roadworthy – check brakes, tyres and lights or reflectors. Remember that when cycling at night you must have white or yellow front lights and red back lights and a reflector. Also make sure that the bike is the right size for you. Explore the local cycle paths and lanes with an adult on a weekend or after school before you try the journey by yourself. Get a helmet that fits well and wear it correctly – it shouldn’t be pushed too far back on your head. Wear high-visibility clothing when cycling. Think about cyclists you may have seen when out and about – how easy are they to spot when not wearing high visibility gear?

Remember to tie your shoelaces securely, and don’t try any silly stunts or ride against traffic. Giving other people a lift is also a daft idea – bicycles are only made for one person! Be Bright, Be Seen Reflective, fluorescent clothing or armbands are a great idea, especially when the nights are drawing in. However, if you have older children who insist that these are ‘uncool’, there are clip-on reflectors that can be attached to bags which may be more acceptable in the eyes of pre-teens and teenagers.

Bust a move Having only been open since the spring, Northern Dance Academy is already causing a stir on the York dance scene. The modern studios in Miller's Yard, just off Gillygate, host a range of dance classes for young and old, beginners and pros. On Saturdays morning there is Baby Ballet classes for three to five year olds starting from 9am, or for those who have a bit of experience and are looking for something to inspire their creativity, there are classes on a Friday for 16 years upwards in ballet, choreography and contemporary dance. n Call 07917 176418.
Developing
confidence
Now celebrating its 20th anniversary in the UK, the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy offers classes to help every child, aged from five to 17, fulfil their potential. As social media increasingly take the place of conversation, many children lack essential communication skills to push themselves forward. Lessons include speech, movement, creative drama and studio productions, and together work to develop a child’s confidence and self-esteem, empowering them to go out and tackle the world with confidence. n To arrange a free trial lesson call 492998.

Stock up early Although you might still only be planning Halloween, it's certainly worth giving a thought ahead to Christmas. Stocking up on Christmas cards is great way to be prepared for the holiday season, and there is no better place to get them than the Cards for Good Causes pop-up shops. Returning once again to St Helen's and St Martin's Churches from 8th October, they sell cards for a mix of charities including Brunswick Organic Nursery, The Wilberforce Trust, Wildlife Trust, Jessie's Fund and many more great causes. Just don't forget to send one our way... n Call 07979 267301.

If you've ever had a bit of bother finding your way around, City of York Council's new initiative is set to help that. The specialist ‘wayfinding’ consultants Placemarque were commissioned earlier this year by the council to examine signposts in and around the city centre, and ways in which better signing can be achieved to help people with disabilities such as dementia. It is hoped that by way of drop-in events at St Sampson’s Square on 4th October, 10am-4pm, and at West Offices on 8th October, 11am-7pm, you'll be able to have your voice heard on how to improve signage in York. n For more information visit www.york.gov.uk/wayfinding
Inspiring talks
Whatever your interest in history, from the Battle of Hastings to World War One, you'll learn something fascinating at a Mint Yard lecture. Named after the area of land on which York Explore Library now stands on Museum Street, the autumn series of touring lectures will lend insight into York's tumultuous history. The next talk will take place at Dunnington Reading Rooms on 9th October and, led by Chris Rock, Chairman of the Battle of Stamford Bridge Society, will detail that 'other' battle of 1066. Also, on 6th November at Rowntree Park Reading Cafe, Jim McGurn, Chief Executive of Get Cycling, will discuss the history and future of the bicycle.

From drab to fab You could say that we have a touch of the diva about us at the Your Local Link office – we do like the finer things in life, but because we’re from Yorkshire we don’t like to spend a lot on anything. So hard to please… Luckily for us a brand new salon, Shabby to Chic, has just opened in Acomb and it will meet all our needs. The salon at Countoak House on Front Street offers a wide range of hair styling and beauty treatments, but what sets it

apart is that the low prices really don’t reflect the great quality that’s on offer – the stylists and therapists use the best products and techniques to ensure that you look nothing short of gorgeous by the time you leave. What really takes the cake for us, though, is that no appointments are necessary; simply walk in, and the team will find time to attend to you. Now that’s the sort of treatment us divas like! n Call 792042.

Health advice from Angie Doig-Thorne Throughout the world people are eating less fat and exercising more. However, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes is on the increase... why? One of the biggest contributing factors to this is the hidden sugar in alcohol and in processed foods. If a product is low in fat then the manufacturers will probably have added sugar to make it taste good. If food manufacturers put sugar content in teaspoons rather than grams, it would make people more aware of what they are eating. When you are shopping check the labels on the food and remember that four grams of sugar is equal to one teaspoon of sugar. Angie Doig-Thorne is a hypnotherapist, nutritionist, and personal trainer. n Visit www.yorkhypnotherapist.com

Face value With beauty treatments, it can often be the case that you either enjoy a relaxing treatment, or grit your teeth to get the results you want while repeating the “no pain, no gain” mantra in your head and going to your happy place. Thankfully, though, Renni Prelle Complimentary Therapies has just added a rather intriguing treatment to their roster, which combines both an unwinding experience and real results. The luxurious facial works on acupressure points on your face, neck, head and shoulders, which increases circulation, promotes relaxation and tightens skin to reduce wrinkles. The treatment can even relieve eye strain and sinusitis. And because Renni is fully qualified in Reflexology and Indian Head Massage, you can thoroughly enjoy your treatment knowing that you are in safe hands. n Visit www.renniprelle.co.uk or call 07940 029672.

Clinical Director of Blossom Dental Care & Implant Studio
“Nothing you wear is more important than your smile” For many people they have had a lot of dental work over the years. They could have old crowns, heavily discoloured & worn teeth, crooked teeth and multiple missing teeth all in one mouth! This means that when these patients come to see us they know that they are unhappy with their smile but because they have so many problems they don’t know where to start or what can be done. Smile Makeover is the term given usually when one cosmetic or restorative procedure may not be enough to give the patient the smile they really want. It incorporates multiple procedures in order to achieve the best long term outcome for the patient both in terms of appearance and function. The most popular treatments include: Porcelain Veneers: are ultra-thin, tooth coloured laminates of porcelain which when bonded into place on the teeth are extremely strong. They can be used to correct heavily worn, crooked or misshapen teeth. They are a very popular cosmetic technique because they require very minimal tooth preparation and can produce that WOW factor for the patient’s smile. Dental Implants: A dental implant is an artificial titanium tooth root which after a healing period becomes fully integrated into the bone providing a fixed long term solution that can replace anywhere between one and all of your teeth. They are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth because they look fantastic and restore the patients ability to chew. What is the procedure? A Smile Makeover is a very personal experience for the patient and each case represents a unique opportunity to change someone’s life. So the first appointment is the Initial Consultation during which we first listen to the patient’s concerns about their smile and what they want to achieve from the treatment. We then undertake a thorough examination of the patient’s mouth. Our treatment is always based on a whole mouth preventative approach to make sure we get the best result for the patient in the long term. Once determining the possible courses of action we take the time to explain the various options to the patient making sure they are well informed and comfortable with the proposed treatment.

Kuki uncovered
Visitors to Kuki Spa enjoy the sense of being in an old country mansion when they visit, thanks to the oak panelled walls and stunning original features. In this series, we delve into the story of the almost century-old building. The Sessions family were very well-known in the York area. Water Meadows was built for Mr and Mrs William Haughton Sessions in 1922, so that William could be close to Sessions Printers, which was located next door. Eventually, William’s son, Bill, joined the company and made a huge impact on the York community. In 1947, Bill was invited to join the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust by Seebohm Rowntree, and he remained a trustee for 43 years. Bill was also the founder of the River Foss Amenity Society, which still thrives today, and was chairman of the New Earswick Nature Reserve for over 45 years. The Sessions name goes back even further in York history, though. The business was first founded by William Alexander back in 1811, and was a bookshop and stationers that ran under the Sessions name from 1865. You can see a replica of this

Thinking caps on! When you think of philosophy, you may initially imagine the likes of Nietzsche and Aristotle adopting the pose of The Thinker and pondering the big questions of the day. However, a philosophy course can offer much more practical benefits than you may realise, especially if you choose the School of Philosophy. Their ten week course explores methods that can help to deal with stress and emotions, explains practices that can improve concentration, and enables you to understand yourself better and enjoy stronger relationships

with others. The non-academic course is open to everyone, no matter what your background – all that you need is a spark of curiosity! You’ll finish the course a calmer, more focused, more efficient version of you – and you’ll be able to make some new friends to boot. Dreams can come true Once upon a time there was a girl called Jo. She was an energetic little girl, always running around and throwing balls against walls. She enjoyed a challenge and even timed herself on her two morning paper rounds. Jo was a top squash player at University, played County netball, and then taught sport and sports psychology at York College. Jo’s dream was to open her own gym where members could get fantastic results by feeding off her passion, drive and determination. So Jo launched Xerciese - Fitness for Everyone after investing £40,000 to convert the old Samson and Delilah's in Haxby Shopping Centre, The Village. If your dream is to lose weight, get fit, or generally surround yourself with positive people, get along to Xercise and introduce yourself to Jo. Remember; dreams really do come true, especially if you add a little effort, commitment and belief. n Call 760707.
The right choice Ever felt a pang for your old home when you’ve moved into a new house? You’re not alone. Many people associate the word ‘loss’ with dealing with the loss of loved ones, but loss can appear in many guises, as Juliet Powell from Choice Therapy explains. “Any change inevitably brings about loss, even if the change appears positive, such as a new job, house, or baby,” says Juliet. “There is a loss of what we had before, and it is important to acknowledge this and to try to ‘end well’ what we are leaving behind.” Juliet says that it is important to take time to think about any changes in our lives, and consider what they will bring, as unacknowledged loss can make future losses more difficult to deal with. “The loss of someone you love brings about a more profound change and has a huge impact on you,” adds Juliet. “It’s important to seek help from others or professionals for support.” n If you feel that you would benefit from counselling, visit www.choicetherapy.biz or call Julie on 07910 237983.

Hair and Beauty Q&A
ASK THE EXPERT Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas!
Q.
I’m a 65-year-old lady. I would like to have a manicure, but by the sounds of it nail art is only for young people these days. Am I too old? I don’t want to look foolish.
Q.
Over the years my jawline has continued to droop, and I can no longer deny that I have jowls! I’d love to get rid of them and regain a more youthful appearance, but I hate the thought of going under the knife. Is there any way I can improve my jawline?
Botox and dermal fillers can help to reduce the appearance of jowls, and volumise, smooth, lift and re-contour the face and cheeks, without the need for surgery. Appointments take between ten and 30 minutes, and effects can last up to eighteen months.
Absolutely. There are a number of treatments that could help to smooth out your jawline, with no knives involved.
You are never too old for gorgeous nails! And not only that, but there are manicure treatments available that have been specifically designed with the more mature lady in mind. For instance, the Murad Signature Vitamin C Environmental Shield Manicure uses an infusion treatment which is scientifically proven to reduce the visible signs of ageing on the hands. It helps to restore elasticity, even tone and rejuvenate skin. The treatment includes massage, paraffin and polish. If you’d like to have your toes done too, there is a matching pedicure treatment which helps to reduce the appearance of pigmentation and age spots, while brightening and clarifying skin.
Offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.

A lingering glance, one drink too many, a flirtation at a party: Betrayal is the story of a love triangle, stretching over the course of nine years and weaving a labyrinth of betrayals, that explores the high price of passion and the damage inflicted by desire. Critically regarded as one of his major dramatic works, Harold Pinter unravels a backwards winding path of loss and discovery charting the ultimate betrayal of friend and husband.
ANTIGINE 21st-25th October Acclaimed playwright, Roy Williams, takes Sophocles’ play and by placing it into a contemporary setting brings Thebes into the 21st Century, reinforcing this tales relevance and vitality. This is a timeless story about loyalty and truth, human nature and human behaviour. It is a story about what happens when one person stands against the rules.
THE KITE RUNNER 27th October-1st November Afghanistan is a divided country on the verge of war and childhood friends, Amir and Hassan are about to be torn apart. It’s a beautiful afternoon in Kabul and the skies are full of the excitement and joy of a kite flying tournament. But neither of the boys can foresee what will happen to Hassan that afternoon, an event that is to shatter their lives.

THE DAILY BREAD 8th October Bad Apple Theatre present an original comedydrama by Kate Bramley. August de Ville is a master baker and his tiny village bakery is the talk of the town. ‘Couldn’t meet a nicer feller’, the village proclaim, but does the cheery facade hide a dark secret? we know the perfect place to go. Bennett’s Café & Bistro on High Petergate, right in the shadow of that huge cathedral, has been making quite a bit of a splash with their teas,
Now is a perfect time to swim with the tide and try Bennett’s for yourself, especially considering their new Autumn/Winter menu is ready to serve. Anything but a shambles We all know and love York's city centre Newgate Market, but tourists looking for great deals, fresh produce and local craft, it has often a been a bit of a chore to find. That is why City of York Council have officially renamed it the Shambles Market, hoping that the association with The Shambles, voted Britain's prettiest Street by Google Streetview, will help make the market easier to find. There is also lots of building work underway to make the market accessible from its namesake street, as part of a £1.6 million refurbishment. n Visit www.york.gov.uk
Piling on the accolades Apart from being York's only Five-star hotel, The Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa is set for further prestigious titles. The Hotel, which occupies the old Great Eastern Railway Headquarters on Station Rise, has been nominated for the inaugural AA Sprit Award in the AA Hospitality Awards, to be held in November in London. The awards are acknowledged as being amongst the most prestigious national awards for hospitality of their kind, so a win for The Grand will be a massive boost for York. We wish the team all the very best and check back in these pages to see how they fared. n Visit www.cedarcourtgrand.co.uk
