Welcome Here it is! I am very proud to introduce the new look Your Local Magazine (YLM), now covering a much wider area. I’d like to thank everyone who has worked on the September issue and made it possible. We welcome Charlie Roadley-Battin, the newest member of our YLM team and I’m loving having her on board. Sarah and I had a wonderful morning at Gabriel’s Garden, thank you Gabbi. We took Alice

the Carnival Queen and dressed her up in a wedding dress and took lots of photos in the stunning Norfolk garden setting. I can’t believe the school summer holidays are over for another year, they seem to go so quickly. Our daughter Willow is 5 on her first day at Primary School, what a birthday treat! Ha ha! Hope you enjoy the new look magazine and we look forward to continuing to cover relevant and interesting articles and stories.

Maglia Rosa Group As I listen to the Maglia Rosa Group I am absorbed into a mystic world, captivated by beautiful melodies and a rich, eclectic voice. The Maglia Rosa Group is a local band that consists of four members, all equally talented. The haunting, operatic like lead vocals are provided by Daisy Lawrence, aged 23, as well as the guitar, organ and flute. Her older brother Sam Lawrence, 25, plays lead guitar, synth and backing vocals. The siblings are joined by Matthew Gadd, 26 from Norwich, on the bass, and Owen Cox, aged 29, from Palgrave, on the drums. In December of 2012 they released their first EP ‘Nighthawks’, entitled after the single and first song on the album. The EP comprises of four tracks; Nighthawks, Fallen Daughter, Blood Orange and Buckling. It is a mesmerising and unique album with hints of Kate Bush in the vocals and dynamic, controlled playing. “We recorded the EP in our home with the help of engineer David Pye” explains Daisy “we then sent it out to lots of music blogs”.

This year has been an amazing year for the Maglia Rosa Group, having been invited to play at the Latitude festiva!. “We were on a new stage to the festival, The Alcove Stage, which we opened and it was really good for us as it was situated right next to the walkway between the campsite and the main stage” says Daisy “Lattitude also put our video on their website, we were really grateful” They were also asked to do a gig at the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket, in March of this year, for BBC Suffolk Introducing. Amanda runs the studio & is fast gaining a reputation for the advice & guidance she gives to women. As each season starts the studio has quickly become a destination to see what is new in. special events. If you step upstairs you find the other parts of the business “we offer workshops on lots of different topics, from practical issues like managing your budget or setting a clear business plan & from stress management in your body to learning about confidence & how to express yourself well. “ They also have coaching rooms where you can have 1-1 sessions with one of the experienced team. Father Walks Daughter Down Aisle After Losing 4.5 Stone A father who was in so much pain he had to retire in his 40s has lost four and a half stone allowing him to walk his only daughter down the aisle for her wedding. And now he is looking forward to celebrating his own wedding anniversary this month in the best shape since he married his sweetheart Julie, 30 years ago. Paul Brett retired after ill health meant he could no longer continue as a technician. Paul was suffering from intense pain, leaving him needing surgery to replace both knee joints. Unable to work, he needed regular painkillers and was short of breath when he walked even small distances. Now, after losing 4.5 stone, dropping from 16 stone 12 lbs to a slim 12 stone 5 lbs, and seeing his waist size shrink from 38 inches to 30 inches, he feels amazing.

The novel starts in 1875 and weaves together the intertwined histories of 4 different families over 150 years. There are the noble de Cygnes, an old family that stretches back into the 13th century, the revolutionary and radical Le Sourd family who want to destroy the former.

The Blanchards are the epitome of the new French bourgeois and the Gascons are a hard working, lower class family with big plans and ambitions. Rutherfurd has managed to weave a complex and gripping history of modern Paris with the fascinating stories of 4 different French families who exemplify modern France. The City of Lights really comes to life and all of the sights, smells and atmosphere that go with it. Fantastic read for the holidays, a great book to really get your teeth into. Highly recommended.

He employs a young man, Stephen Sefton – a Spanish Civil War veteran, as an assistant and along with Professor Morely’s opinionated and rebellious daughter, Miriam, they set off on their tour of Norfolk. However their scenic tour soon turns into a murder investigation when the vicar of Blakeney is found hanging from the church’s bell rope. Professor Morely finds himself abandoning his Norfolk guide book to try and discover the facts surrounding the vicar’s death. This is a must read for fans of classic crime fiction and a fascinating look back at traditional 1930s England where the protagonists must confront the conventions of class, education and politics. Having Norfolk as the setting also adds extra local interest value – we are hoping there are many more in The County Guides series to come.

For many years, it has been a tradition at Diss Golf Club for the Club Captain to nominate and raise funds for a Charity of his own choice. Archie Moore, the 2012/13 Captain chose ‘HELP FOR HEROES’ and it gave him great pleasure to present Jan Piggott with a cheque for £4,381.04. (picture below, left) Money had been raised throughout his year of office and had included a specific Charity Golf Day, which was well supported by the Members of the Club. The Junior Section at the Club is thriving, with James Biggs recently winning the Suffolk Golfing Union Junior Championships, to add to his Club Championship success at both adult and junior levels. The Junior Team, comprising of James, Josh Driver and Michael Manser also secured the SGU Junior Team Prize. The Junior section covers all age groups and abilities, with regular lessons for under 11’s from resident Professional Nigel Taylor, and the organisational skills of Paul Hunt, the junior organiser. Nigel has been with the Club for more than 25 years and has seen the progression of several young members into the adult ranks. The Ladies section’s success at county level has been very positive for a number of years now, with teams reaching the final and semi final stages of both age group and handicapped competitions. This success has been partly due to the interest being shown by new Lady members taking up the sport, through the

A thriving Senior’s section is a great benefit to Diss Golf Club. Competitions, matches and general social golf, primarily played during weekdays, enables participation for all levels and abilities, but with the general principle of enjoyment being the key factor. Matches are played on a friendly basis and currently home and away fixtures are played against 23 different clubs in both Norfolk and Suffolk. The Club also enjoys reciprocal arrangements with clubs such a Gt Yarmouth

& Caistor and Ely, giving the opportunity for members to play different courses with no green fee! As with the majority of Golf Clubs nationally Diss suffers from a shortage of young men and women coming into the sport. The Club is currently introducing new membership schemes, including age related membership subscription, for the under 40’s, family memberships and couples schemes. It is hoped that the scheme will be able to assist everybody to play what is certainly a relaxing yet physically beneficial sport, playable by all. Other facilities for use by members and guests alike are also available at Diss, with a spacious Clubhouse affording the users comfort whilst using the bar and catering facilities, which are open daily, supplying basic snacks and refreshments, to dinners and functions. The Sunday carvery is well worth a visit during the winter months. With the summer drawing to a close, September is a perfect time to invest in new window treatments before winter appears. Whether it be a roman blind or a pair of full length curtains, window treatments are an important part of your interior scheme adding colour or pattern. But not only that, they act as barrier to the outside and create a warm and intimate interior. When it comes to changing your curtains, it can be a bit bombarding when you see how many different fabrics there are to choose from. When you have tall sash windows like I do, choosing a less expensive plain fabric but then adding interlining is a really easy way to

create luxurious expensive looking curtains, It also keeps in the heat on those dark winter nights- always a bonus! Adding a patterned pelmet or layering with a roman blind is a good way to add interest to the windows and tie everything in your scheme together. In bedrooms, it’s always a good idea to use a blackout lining or blind to block out the unwanted light at night. This is especially good in children’s bedrooms, and will mean they (and you) will get a good night’s sleep. Teamed with dress or sheer curtains, blackout roman or roller blinds work really well to create a layered look, which is functional but gorgeous to look at.

Boost To The Housing Market Did you buy your first house with a 5% or less deposit before the banking crisis in 2008? Have you since started or increased your family and now find yourself unable to move into the 3 or 4 bedroom house that you now need? There are thousands of people trapped in this situation through no fault of their own because with mortgage lenders tightening their criteria for lending and house prices having fallen, they no longer have the equity needed to move on. This, rather than the virtual withdrawal of first time buyers is, in the view of many commentators, the principal reason for the stagnation of the property market over the past 5 years. Higher loan to value mortgages are now available but generally on terms which are unaffordable to many would be buyers. Whilst the Government’s initiative, Help to Buy Equity Loan Scheme, for first time

buyers buying new properties was welcomed by house builders, it did nothing to help those needing to move onto the second or third rung of the ladder. The Government at last seem to have addressed this problem with the announcement of the new Help to Buy Mortgage Guarantee Scheme which is set to be available from January 2014. What is the Help to Buy Mortgage Guarantee Scheme? It is a scheme whereby the Government will enter into an agreement with selected mortgage lenders to guarantee payments of up to 15% of the purchase price of property in the event that a borrower defaults and the lender has to repossess and sell the property. Who qualifies? Whilst full details are yet to be announced it is believed that the scheme will be available to a wide range of borrowers who are able to provide at least a 5% deposit when buying property to live in up to a value of £600,000. The Government have made it clear that the scheme will only be available to owner/occupiers.

How will it work? If a Borrower has a deposit of at least 5% of the purchase price the Government will guarantee the difference between 80% of the purchase price and the deposit paid by the Borrower in the event of default leading to a sale under a repossession. What is the benefit to the Borrower? It is the intention of the scheme that with the benefit of the guarantee, the Mortgage Lenders will have the confidence to lend a higher proportion of the value of the property (up to 95%) to the Borrower on better terms than currently available.www How will it affect the market? The scheme will be a welcome boost to the market and will hopefully encourage those that have been unable until now to consider moving to do so. Local and Eco-Friendly A top tip for a wedding is to keep it eco-friendly and local. You may be thinking ‘that’s all well and good but how do I make sure my clothes are ecofriendly?!’ Well, why not buy your suits second hand? If you don’t like that idea you could always rent your suits. The ‘Vintage’ look is very popular at the moment, so a second hand vintage dress would look amazing. Using a flower grower like Gabriel’s Garden, is ideal as the flowers will be seasonal, locally grown and organic. Try to source local caterers too. Standing in amongst the beautiful flowers in Gabriel’s Garden I am reminded of the words of Keats. There is such serenity in amongst the scents and the colours, with the sun and the bird song. Everyone that arrives at Gabriel’s Garden is fully welcomed by Gabbi and her family. For our photo shoot we were joined by two of her daughters, Freya aged 13 and Georgia aged 15. Gabbi is passionate about the garden and flowers. Growing up in Suffolk she remembers gathering wild grasses, buttercups and sorrel for her Mum and has always had a love for the countryside. Originally she ran a salad growing business but realised that her heart was with growing flowers, she grows from seed and has a range of perennials and annuals “I love to grow flowers that are colourful and fragrant”. In 2012 Gabbi successfully applied for a small grant from the RDPE (Rural Development Programme for England) to develop the business, Karin Curruthers from Scream Blue Murder designed the brand, logo and website with photography by Nick Reid. It all started though when Gabbi was asked to do a bouquet for a 60th

Wedding Anniversary. The flowers chosen were the ones whose scents and colours aroused sentimental memories. The bouquet was talked about for weeks and this created the initial spark. Gabbi clearly has a gift. “Everything in the garden is very natural and spontaneous with bees and butterflies everywhere. I grow all the favourites but also some unusual varieties and I’m passionate about flowers that reflect the changing seasons. I’m an organic grower; everything is grown responsibly and sustainably”. Gabriel’s Garden is consultancy based; by prior arrangement you can come and select the flowers for your event “We provide a country garden experience and all our flowers have that ‘just picked from the garden look’. We specialise in flowers for Weddings, Funerals and Events and Bouquets for individual customers”. Gabriel’s Garden also provides a Weekly Flower Service for restaurants, hotels and country houses and is developing an Online Order and Delivery service. You can find Gabriel’s Garden flowers at the Farmers Market at Wyken Vineyard on alternate Saturdays and at

the Pennoyer Centre, Pulham St Mary on the 4th Saturday of the month. “I work closely with the Pennoyer Centre which is an excellent wedding venue” says Gabbi. “When I started Gabriel’s Garden the land was derelict, it has been an incredible journey to reclaim the land and I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement and support from friends and family. Next year I would like to take on an apprentice to train and work alongside me”. Gabbi also uses an organisation called ‘Help X’, an online networking service for national and international volunteers and people who need help with specific tasks. On our visit she had a New Zealand couple working with her, Mark and Renee, and we asked them about their experience… “We have travelled from the top of South Island, New Zealand. We started in Ireland, then the South Coast of England, North Wales and now here at Gabriel’s Garden in Norfolk. It’s been so nice meeting local people. Being here with Gabbi has been lovely. She is so excited about the place and has so many ideas and thoughts. It’s been nice to be a part of it”.

Farm Boy We had a quick catch up with the man from Jimmy's Farm to find out how life is on the farm, his latest projects and what get's him going.

Q. How long is it since you first bought the farm? A. We have been at the farm for 11 years now. It’s been totally bananas! We don’t own the farm but are tenants here with a 25 year lease. I think that will take us well into our 50’s so will certainly be long enough!

I currently have a few things in the pipeline, I am filming the second series of Food Fight Club with my friend Jamie Oliver and I’m also up to no good with the Food Unwrapped team working on a third series. Q. Do you have any other passions? A. Family, entomology and if I have a little time – a bit of fishing. Relaxing and very good for the soul.

Q. Why did you decide to go from Zoology and Entomology into farming? A. One day, during study for my PhD I was looking down the microscope counting flies and I suddenly realised that all this indoor work just wasn’t for me. I wanted an outdoor life breathing fresh air and creating my own destiny. I had also just read John Seymour’s Guide to Self-Sufficiency and I thought how much I’d like to make a change to my physical life and well-being as well as eating food that had provenance and a story.

Q. I loved ‘Jimmys Forest’; do you have any plans to do anything similar?

A. I love working in the television industry, it is a real privilege. I have had so many adventures and been fortunate to visit and experience places I would never have been. Their song ‘Take me Out’ is basically the farm anthem – I love it and it makes me so cheerful every time I hear it!

Out & About I have always loved Country Fairs and Agricultural Shows. The friendly, family atmosphere that you always feel and the camaraderie. You feel part of a community. That is exactly how I felt at the 140th Wayland Show. As a start to the day, the parking was very smooth and well organised; I can tell you from experience that this is not always the case when you go to events! The first place we headed for was the food marquee (this probably says a lot about us!). In all fairness we were drawn by the delicious smells. There were lots of lovely, local producers, it really showed off just how much can be found on our doorstep. The fairground rides were a big hit with my Goddaughter and of course I had to try them out too, obviously to look after her! From there we walked through to the equestrian area of the show. Being a horse lover and having grown up with horses I very much enjoyed it. It was mesmerising watching them walk, trot, canter and jump. Again this was popular with my Goddaughter as we each chose our favourite horses and predicted who would win. We then sampled some yummy food (a trend is appearing

here!) whilst watching the Gun Dogs. This was fascinating as it’s not something that you get to see every day. The dogs are so obedient and carefully watch and listen to their owners. Being an agricultural show there were lots and lots of animals. From cattle and sheep to show rabbits, guinea-pigs, ducks and chickens. The rabbits were my absolute favourite as I am fanatical about rabbits; I have three of my own, including a mini rex which is a very popular show breed. We even found that there was a new breed at the show. There were so many lovely stalls and things to do- there were rides on mini steam trains, the smell of which evoked many happy childhood memories, as my parent’s show their stationary engines and we were often at rallies, shows and fairs. You could try your hand at bag decorating, archery or have your face painted; my beautiful Goddaughter was turned into a tiger! Our favourite event in the main ring was probably the stunt motorbikes. We gasped as they took to the jumps and flew through the air, such a thrill. All in all we had a fun filled, memorable day at the Wayland Show finished off with fresh lemonade, made as we watched, and sticky candy-floss (always a must!). I would definitely recommend it for next year!

And on Sundays a Carvery 12-3pm and 2 for 1 ribs 5-9pm. Tracey also uses her time to raise money for charity. Having already completed The 3 Peak Challenge, the St. Edmunds Wheel 100 mile bike ride, the Suffolk Coast 60 mile cycle ride and the Cambridge to Norwich 76 mile cycle ride, In October of this year she will be doing a 40 mile (a marathon and a half)

Spring Gymnastics

Spring Gymnastics was set up by Heidi Palmer, BG level 2 coach and her friend Christine Michelin in April 2012 when they realised there was no where in Diss for their children to do gymnastics. Nearly 16 months later, the Club continues to thrive attracting members from the age of 4 and up to 24 years old. Members include beginners, progressive and intermediate level gymnasts. The Club is British Gymnastics registered and is a great place for children and young people to learn gymnastics, get fit, build strength and enjoy themselves as well as learning

to do cart wheels, hand stands and split jumps in a safe and nurturing environment. The Club offers a free taster session so children can try out a typical gym class and meet the Club's BG registered Coaches. Spring Gymnastics runs classes at the Diss High School gymnasium on Mondays after school from 4.307.30pm and Saturday mornings from 10.00am-2.00pm. Stress & Exercise

Stress is not a condition itself; it is a response that your body has to a pressured situation whether that be a pile of paperwork or a car pulls out in front of you and you have to slam on the breaks. It is the amount of time your body is responding to a stressful situation that causes problems. The example of the car pulling out is momentary and your body will recover from the adrenalin release within a short space of time but if you are constantly under pressure then this response and outpour of adrenalin in constant and it becomes very tiring on the body and its immune system. Adrenalin is released from the adrenal glands when the body believes it is involved in a stressful situation. This adrenalin rush prepares the body for what we call "fight or flight." With a rush of adrenalin, your heart rate and breathing rate increases and your senses become more acute, readying the body for flight. Nutrients are released to sustain muscular activity and blood flow is regulated away from less important organs to the muscles to prepare for a fight. The body keeps up this preparation until it no longer feels threatened. Image what is happening to your body if you are under prolonged stress day in day out without putting it to good use? This has a negative effect on the body,

because its focus is shifted away from our immune and digestive systems, producing a weakened immune system and digestive problems, not to mention overworking the heart and helping you to store fat as the nutrients are not used in muscular activity. You can use this adrenaline rush to add a boost to your exercise and release your stress. Use the pent up adrenaline by converting it into the power and energy you need to push through your workout. Hunnybunny Stained Glass Vetrate Artistiche Toscane, Siena, Italy… This is where it all started for Clair Rice, owner of Hunnybunny Stained Glass. In 1998 Clair travelled to Italy to train in Leaded, Stained Glass Windows. Clair then headed back to England, where she taught herself the copper foil method. Clair continued making stained glass every spare moment she got. However, in the last 2-3 years, she has been able to do it full time. “I’ve really been doing it a lot more seriously now and this has been my busiest year so far” Hunnybunny Stained Glass, located on Fair Green, Diss, already stocks four shops – The Angel Café in Diss, Amandines of Diss, Sandlings in Attleborough and in Hunstanton at The Strand Line. Clair goes to many festivals; recently she attended the 4th Harlequin Fayre near Norwich. Everything that Clair creates is individual and unique, no one

piece is the same as it can all depend upon what glass and materials she has. Nothing is ever wasted; even small pieces of glass are used. “Everything is recycled” says Clair. Prices for Clair’s work start at £6.50. However, prices will vary depending upon the size, shape, detail and glass. Commission pieces could be any size and shape. She will sit down with the customer and they’ll design the piece together and then Clair will create it. Once it’s finished, her partner Al will then fit it. So, what are Clair’s future plans? “In 12 months I hope to have my own kiln which will enable me to do fused glass and painted glass. I would then like to teach in schools”. Alan Powley Builders Alan Powley Builders specialise in Straw Bale and Cob Earth houses. So when I was told that Al, Alan Powley, partner of Clair Rice Hunnybunny Stained Glass, had built an Eco Shed in his garden I was very keen to have a look! A ‘shed’ is not the word I would use to describe it… it is more like a fairy tale house. The roof is grass with large windows looking up to the sky. The arched door with giant, visible wooden cogged lock opens to reveal a large area that feels as though you are in a Tolkien novel. There are actual trees supporting the roof, stained glass panels in the wall that catch the light perfectly; cannon

flaps for the couple’s boys… it’s magical. So what made Al decide to build the Eco ‘Shed’? “I wanted to build a shed that would suit me. I love to make one off unique pieces and all the materials were found or recycled. Food With A View Walking into Fayre View Restaurant you immediately feel the fantastic atmosphere. It is an extremely old, wooden beamed, grade II listed building. The tables are beautifully laid and not crowded and there are areas for groups or for a secluded and private meal. On the 22nd August 2013 it will be the 10th Anniversary for owner and Chef Chris Gissing. We asked him how he came to own the restaurant…”I have been a chef since I left school having trained at City College, Norwich. I originally worked at the Saracens Head but when we heard that the Fayre View building was on the market we decided to go for it”. Chris has lived in Diss/Roydon all his life so he is a local ‘boy’. As such, he is passionate about using local suppliers and local produce where possible so he works closely with local farmers. The menu at Fayre View Restaurant is always evolving and changing with the seasons. They serve classic food with a slight twist, which is absolutely delicious (I can say this from experience!). The whole of the menu is produced by Chris from start to finish. He creates the dishes, peels the vegetables, cooks the food, and sets out the food on the plates… everything. Events & Updates Down By the Riverside Each year Waveney & Blyth Arts celebrate the region’s rivers. This year Diss joins in with an event on the riverside path behind the supermarkets. Down By The Riverside is an afternoon of poetry, prose, drama and music at 2.30pm on Sunday 8th September. This has been arranged by Diss Museum, Diss Community Partnership, Cittaslow and the Waveney RiverCare Group. It will be like promenade theatre, with people moving along the river bank to hear poems with a river theme and readings from authors such as George Eliot (The Mill On The Floss), Dickens (Our Mutual Friend), and Joseph Conrad (Heart of Darkness). Poems include: Tennyson’s The Lady of Shalott and Under the Waterfall by Thomas Hardy. Drama group EyesWrite will be one of the attractions with a play called Ferry Cross the Styx. This shows the last journey of a former footballer into the afterlife, guided by a ferryman with the manner of a London cabbie. It is hoped that there will stalls, crafts, artists, musicians and refreshments along the path. Meet at The Lows bridge for this free event.

Wings Appeal September is the month when the Royal Air Forces Association makes a special effort with its Wings Appeal to raise money for its charitable work. Former and present members of the RAF and their families are helped with the cash they collect for Wings Appeal. Among those who recently served and were injured in Afghanistan are RAF Regiment personnel from Honington . They deserve our support. The Diss RAFA branch, like many other organisations is finding it difficult to attract new members and volunteers to help with collections. The Big Sing

The wall along the riverside path at the rear of Morrisons looks brighter with the addition of a riverside themed mural. It was painted by a team from DC3, as a community works project on 7th July in place of the usual Sunday morning service. Local artist Peter Knights supervised the artwork which was achieved in 3 hours and all agreed it was a fun project that will benefit the community. Thanks to John taylor Builders for the materials and Morrisons for their cooperation.

September Splendour A fundraising event in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices a flower arranging evening entitled ‘September Splendour’ will be taking place at Eye Community Centre on Monday 23rd September featuring the very talented and popular Alan Smith from Ipswich. Alan has visited the centre on many previous occasions and has always attracted a large audience his work is superb and his commentary on the evening is always very informative entertaining and amusing. He has been a NAFAS area demonstrator since 1975 a very keen competitor being part

You may recall in last months edition that I was invited over to be shown around Quidenham Chidrens Hospice, the directions given were fine but I got lost three times mainly thanks to the antiquated direction signs which must have been placed in the 18th century. Once found the fund raiser for Norfolk, Laura Shearing met me and took me round this bright place. Come the Big Sing last month over 300 people packed the church and a collection was taken. Once it was counted the Rector of Diss Revd Canon Tony Billett was pleased to hand over to the charity E A C H a record sum of £800.19. I guess that the 9th season of this popular event was the best ever to date. I suppose it was worth going the wrong way only to find the right road to success. Unfortunatly the autumn months begin to close in and the summer programme of events begin to slow down at Diss Parish Church and so I hope all the different event organisers feel they have travelled down a road of organising success. But with summer fading away up pops another set of people who are planning the well known St. Mary’s Christmas Market and I’m sure their vision of success is clear. If we do go wrong we must get ourselves quickly back on planning course and always remember what ever we put on it is clearly organised for the general public and visitors to Diss, no other deviation would be acceptable. Events & Updates Round Tower Churches St George’s Church, Shimpling, is one of 170 round tower churches which survive more or less intact in England. Nearly three quarters of them are in Norfolk – and Suffolk has almost all of the rest. This ‘Norfolk and Suffolk Speciality’ is to be the subject of an illustrated talk by the Chairman of the Round Tower Churches Society, Stuart Bowell, at St Georges Church, on Saturday 14th September at 7:00pm – with wine and nibbles available from 6:15pm. Paws Of Comfort Two hundred extra special teddy bears have arrived in the county – and are now on standby to comfort bereaved children. The memory bears have been bought by Rosedale Funeral Home, which has branches throughout South Norfolk and North Suffolk, to provide extra support to youngsters who have lost a loved one. Rosedale’s Anne Beckett-Allen, a trustee of Norfolk’s child bereavement charity Nelson’s Journey, said that each bear had a secret zipped compartment, where children

On Saturday, 28th September Beccles “Friends in Harmony” Choir will be returning to Harleston for a concert in St. John’s Church. If you like music that’s easy on the ear –anything from West End shows to John Rutter and Negro spirituals – then this is an occasion not to be missed. The 30 strong choir, who have performed all over Norfolk and Suffolk and raised over £40,000 for charity, will be joined by instrumental soloists to present a very relaxing and enjoyable evening. All proceeds will go to Star Throwers Charity, a cancer support charity based in Wymondham dedicated to caring for people affected by cancer. The Many Colours of Harvest All Saints Church, Mendham is hosting a three-day, rainbow harvest festival event over the weekend beginning Friday September 6th. The festival kicks off with a preview event called ‘A Colourful Taste of Harvest’ on Friday 6th September at 7.00pm. This is a ticket only event, which includes canapés and wine, to give people an opportunity to view the displays in the church, before the main festival begins. Tickets are priced at £6.50. The church will be open on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th, between 10.00am and 4.00pm, for ‘The Many Colours of Harvest’, to allow people to admire the floral displays, visit the stalls and partake of light refreshments. Entry is free and a programme can be purchased for £1. Donations are welcome Also on Saturday, beginning at 4.30pm, there is a “Colourful Interlude with Vintage Tea’ event. This involves prose and poetry readings by accomplished actress, Meg Davies and a performance from celebrated singer, Jenny Vickers. This will be followed by the ‘vintage tea’, which includes traditional cucumber sandwiches served on bone china. Tickets are priced at £7.50. A combined ticket for both the preview on Friday and the ‘Vintage Tea’ can be obtained for only £12. The event culminates in ‘Harvest Songs of Praise ‘ on Sunday evening, at 6.30pm.
