Take Pride in Diss The Big Clean up.

This year the big clean up weekend will be on 8th and 9th June in order to make the town sparkle in time for the biggest events in the town’s calendar, Proms in the Park and the Diss Carnival, on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June 2013. This year we promise to make the Big Clean up bigger and better and build upon the success of the event last year. All local businesses will be invited to participate in the taking

pride in Diss window sticker campaign for 2013 and we will be introducing a “see it? report it!” scheme to encourage local people to report any problem areas where some extra TLC is needed. This will give us the opportunity to focus on areas the community is concerned about over the big clean up weekend and inform the correct people of any areas that may need special attention in the future. The Take Pride in Diss campaign is aimed at improving

the quality of cleanliness of our lovely town. The Big Clean Up is our opportunity to tackle it together and target those areas that don’t always get regular attention. We are asking you as members of the community to come together with us and give a helping hand. We will be meeting at the Diss Youth and Community Centre in two shifts, the first from 10:00am -12:00pm and the second from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. Refreshments will be provided for all volunteers and all we ask is you

bring your gloves and get stuck in! Basil is keeping busy

Charity Fashion Show 25th April

...with the 'Official Diss Town Guide'.

In 1983 Basil Abbott was invited to edit the Diss Town Guide. 30 years later he is still doing so, having edited all but two editions in that time. Mr. Abbott was well qualified for the post, being born in Diss and educated at the Church and Grammar Schools and the University of East Anglia. He began his working life as a reporter on the Diss Express and still contributes columns and reviews to newspapers and magazines. He is also East Anglian reviewer for the

magazine Plays International. In 2005 he became manager of Diss Museum and has helped it gain over ÂŁ50,000 of funding and three awards. He has run several festivals, including one commemorating Thomas Paine, which won a Museums & Heritage Award for Excellence. In 2009 Basil was made Honoured Citizen of the town. He promotes the idea of Total Museum, running projects, giving talks and tours and writing columns, rather than just collecting and displaying items. "I think this is my 14th Town Guide," said Basil as he prepares the latest edition, with the help of a committee. "It is always a lot of work; but I enjoy it. If there is a more comprehensive guide in the country I would like to see it."

The Diss Friend's Group for East Anglia's Children's Hospices are pleased to announce that a Fashion Show in aid of the Charity is being held at the Park Hotel Diss on Thursday 25th April. The Show will feature clothing by Tatters of Diss and Harleston. Make up Artists Rachael & Dionne from Defining Radiance will be doing the make up for our models and Roz Barnet from 'As you like it' will be showing some of her accessories. A rail of new clothing donated to our Diss shop will be on display and along with the clothing and accessories modelled will be available to purchase at the end of the evening along with an opportunity to seek advice from make up artists Rachael & Dionne.

Charity Art Show & Sale

The Rotary Club of Diss & District’s extremely successful Charity Art Show and Sale held in the Diss Corn Hall has moved from the Autumn to early Summer this year, following the decision to postpone last October’s event. Once again, over 500 pictures from some 120 high profile East Anglian artists in a wide range of styles and media will be on show in ARTEX13. The very high quality of the work and the attractive displays at previous arts shows always results in a high volume of sales. As an extra attraction, the well-known local artist, Peter Knights, will be demonstrating his techniques throughout the Saturday of the show. Entrance to the Artex13 show

is free to the public on the two viewing days, which are Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May 2013. For several years, Rotary International has matched donations of hundreds of million dollars by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio, with such success that the disease is still endemic in only three countries in the world.

On April 26th and 27th the Harleston Players Youth Theatre Company is performing Babe, the Sheep-pig at Archbishop Sancroft High School, Harleston. When Farmer Hogget wins young piglet Babe at the village fair, Mrs Hogget has only one plan in mind – to fatten him up for the pot. But, adopted and trained by the old sheepdog Fly, Babe sets his sights on a very different future, as the world’s first sheep-pig! With a brilliant script by David Wood, the UK’s top children’s playwright, Babe, the sheep-pig is a fun, fast-moving, family show suitable for everyone aged five upwards. Performances are at 7.30pm on Friday 26th and 2.30pm on

Galloway gears up for a journey of remembrance WWI Centenary preparations… lest we forget!

Next year sees the beginning of the 100th anniversary of the First World War. From August 2014 through to November 2018 there will be many events commemorating this period of Britain’s history. The war touched almost everyone’s life in some way or other, their legacy is our liberty ... and we must never forget! In January the Prime Minister announced a £50 million programme of events and education projects to mark the Centenary, with one of the prime objectives being for every state school to send student ambassadors to visit the battlefields to learn of the experiences and sacrifices of people from their local community. With 50 years’ experience as a specialist provider to schools and colleges of study tours and day excursions to the battlefields of both World Wars, Galloway Travel Group of Mendlesham, is preparing for its role as the Centenary approaches. Their 2014 School Tours brochure features a Centenary insert dedicated to The Somme and Ypres areas, and this month

sees the launch of WWI Centenary Tours for Adult Groups, including the provision of tailored tours to meet specific group needs, e.g. British Legion branches, East Anglian Regiments, Parish Communities, etc. And soon three new coaches, emblazoned with striking livery specially commissioned to mark the Centenary of the First World War, will take to the road in recognition of Galloway’s long-term connections with the battlefields of the Western Front. Diss Young Farmers Charity co-ordinators Bex White and Ed Webber, last year’s Chairman Peter Cullum and Macmillan representative Georgina Daniels Diss Young Farmers, a local nonprofit charity, raised a grand total of £5,000 for their chosen charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support. A cheque presentation was held at Burston Pavillion, the Young Farmers meeting place, with a speech from Macmillan representative Georgina Daniels. The donated funds were said to make a huge difference to cancer care in the Norfolk region, with £5,000 contributing to run call centres, nurses and

clothing/essentials for cancer victims. Last year’s Diss Young Farmers Chairman Peter Cullum commended the club’s effort to raise such a sum and explained how he chose last year’s charity in tribute of a colleague who sadly passed away due to the disease. Diss Young Farmers would like to thank all of the companies, small businesses and kind local people who contributed to the success of their main fundraising event, a charity auction of promises; with many promises donated in the Diss area. Also thanks goes to TW Gaze Auctioneer Mike Sarson who kindly gave his time to conduct the auction, and to Pennoyers Centre in Pulham for hosting the event. Calling all the local charities in Diss especially those who can help all ages should anyone need to call upon them. If charity organisers want to gain a little money to help them function and would like to be considered at 'The Big Sing' this August 11th then you only have one month left to apply. All the applications will go before an independent body of people who have nothing to do

with this event and they will choose the charity which will go forward on that evening. Sainsbury’s Celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight ...with Attleborough Junior School. Attleborough Sainsbury’s colleague Shelley Johnson visited Attleborough Junior School last month to talk to the children in year 4 about the work Sainsbury’s is doing with Fairtrade across the world. The talk was in conjunction with Fairtrade fortnight which runs from the 25th February till the 10th March.

Sainsbury's was one of the first supermarkets to sell Fairtrade products 16 years ago. Since their customers began buying Fairtrade products, they have helped thousands of individual farmers become sustainable and profitable. Shelley brought the Fairtrade products that the Attleborough branch sells including one of their top selling lines the humble and hugely popular banana. The Attleborough branch donated 352 bananas enough for the whole school to take with them on their cultural trip to London on the 6th March.

Rosedale hosts touching photo exhibition Rosedale Funeral Home has been chosen as one of the venues for a photographic exhibition which is touring the country. Entitled Small Actions, Big Difference, the exhibition was commissioned by Dying Matters in the run up to this year’s awareness week in May, as part of its work to tackle the taboo subject of death and bereavement. The images highlight how seemingly small deeds can make a powerful difference to the quality of life for people in their final days, and for those who care for them. “We’re throwing open our doors, inviting everyone to drop in to see the exhibition,” explained Rosedale Funeral Administrator Mark Hall. “This is the first of a number of events we’re planning to mark Dying Matters Awareness Week and hope that the arrival of this exhibition will begin to encourage people to talk about their end of life and funeral wishes. “Ultimately everyone deserves a good death and fitting send off,

and we feel it’s really important that people do speak about their wishes.” The exhibition will be at Rosedale Funeral Home in Attleborough from Monday 8 April until Friday 12 April, when everyone is welcome to drop in (9am – 5pm). Coffee and cake will be served. Dying Matters is a coalition that includes organisations from across the NHS, voluntary and independent health and care sectors. My Mother Said I Never Should Harleston Players.

Rarely performed, but highly regarded (it was praised by the National Theatre as one of the most significant plays of the 20th Century), and the product of a playwright just 25 years old, the play broke new ground

when first performed in 1987, exposing the hopes and tensions, expectations and resentments of mother-daughter relationships in a way never seen before in British theatre. Spanning four generations of women in the same family, from the 1920s to the 1980s, and reflecting the enormous social changes – and new choices open to women – during those years, My Mother Said I Never Should is being performed by Harleston Players over two weekends in early May. Directed by Steve Askew, the play features four of the Players’ talented actors – Meryl Keeble, Sara Curtis, Pat Parris and Cherryl Jeffries. In Harling Memories, the author David O'Neale has collected memoirs and photos from many local residents and presented them in an impressive, interesting and vibrant way. Here is an extract from the book: 'In the 1930s there were six grocers and provisions shops in the village, also six small confectionery shops, three bakers, one chemist still in the same place, three butchers, one fishmonger and fruiterer, but

there were also people who peddled their fish and fruit by bicycle in the 1930s. There were two fried fish shops and seven public houses still open in 1939. There were two gents' barbers, the ladies had not got onto permanent waving at that time; and two boot and shoe repairers. A large business in the Market Place sold furniture, household goods, hardware and paraffin oil. It also served the agricultural trade with a blacksmith, tinsmith, galvanised sheeting and wire netting etc...'

David O'Neale David and his family have been living in Bridgham (two miles from Harling) for the past 25 years. Harling Memories is his sixth local history book. In 1998, David was one of the founders of the Bridgham Millennium Group and helped secure funding for a wide range of local projects. He has organised many local events including Viking re-enactment weekends, an Ely Cathedral choir concert in Bridgham Church and a 60th anniversary reunion of

local children who'd taken part in a fancy dress parade in 1949. Although diagnosed with motor neurone disease a year ago, in June 2012 David helped organise a wonderful 3-day Diamond Jubilee Festival. He also managed to take part in the Industrial Revolution section of the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics as a smelter. His latest project in Bridgham is a Coronation Banquet on June 1st to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation.

Head to Turkuaz - the home of Turkish Cuisine in Diss. Have you ever driven past Turkuaz Restaurant in Diss and wondered what it was like? Well wonder no more. Inside, the restaurant is warm, cosy and inviting and the staff really make you feel welcome. Turkey is famous for kebabs but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually a lot more to Turkish cuisine than that. In fact, Turkish food is very diverse with the menu including such things as mixed grill, chicken with mushrooms and white wine and lamb cutlets.

Once seated at our table we were presented with a plate of complimentary carrot, celery and a selection of olives with a tasty dip. The menu was interesting and varied and we chose a selection of starters including deep-fried breaded Camembert cheese, prawns with spring onions, peppers, garlic tomatoes and white wine, lamb liver fried with oregano, mint, onions and red wine and Falafel which is ground chickpeas and broad beans toasted in spices. Along with the starters we were

given complimentary bread which was a nice touch. For main courses we had a mixed grill with lamb chops, lamb and chicken shish, kofte and chicken wings, a lamb and chicken Shish kebab, moussake and Yoghurtlu Adana which was minced lamb laid on pitta bread and yoghurt covered with a really tasty sauce. All of the starters and main courses were a big hit with generous -sized portions. Somehow we found room for dessert and managed to polish off some traditional Baklava which

is filo pastry stuffed with pistachio and honey, yummy cheesecake and ice cream. Afterwards we were all impressed when we were presented with a plate of complimentary fruit which was beautifully presented. It was a lovely finishing touch. All in all, the food was very impressive, as was the service and all the small extra touches that make Turkuaz stand out from other restaurants. We'll definitely be heading back. Last year, dad Joe and mum Susan, along with their son Michael, finally bought The Red Lion. 'We're an old-fashioned pub with a real homely, cosy feel,' explains Michael. 'When I was growing up in the 1980s Mum and Dad always ran pubs. What we're doing here is bringing back the kind of pub we had back then.' So how is the Red Lion different? 'We're a family-run business and really care about our customers,' says Michael. 'We've even arranged day trips for our customers to places like the dogs or go-karting. Customer service

is key. If someone books a table for a meal at 6.30pm they can stay as long as they'd likeâ&#x20AC;Śwe wouldn't dream of asking them to finish by a certain time. A lot of pubs nowadays want to you come in, spend your money and then move on to make way for the next person. We're not like that at all.' The Red Lion serves food from Tuesday to Sunday. It offers a traditional pub menu with a few surprises! 'We do all the usual things people expect such as fish and chips or steak pie but we also do things like paella which is a little bit different,' says Michael. It offers lunchtime specials and an early-bird special on a Friday between 5.30 and 6.30pm that only costs ÂŁ5 for a meal and a drink - booking essential. Better still, it caters for all the family. 'Children are very welcome,' says Michael. 'We have

an outdoor children's play area with swings, slide, frisbees and even a bouncy castle. We have rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats and ducks who little children love to watch. Method 1. Preheat your oven to 160 C/140C fan/gas 2. Cut the cabbage into quarters and rem ove the hard woody stalk then finely shred the cabbag e and set to one side. 2. Peel, core and finely cho p the apples, and place them in a pan & soften them in butter for about 5 minutes. 3. Peel and finely chop the onions, add them to the app les along with the garlic. Soften these for a further 5 minutes before adding in the spices and sugar. 4. Tip in the red cabbage, mix well, season and add the vinegar. Cover with a tight-fi tting lid and bake for about 2 hours until really soft and the cabbage has soaked up all the flavours.

Getting it right For a great summer of events. Those readers who keep an eye on the notice boards outside St. Mary's Church in Diss may have wondered why they have been blank for so long. Well apart from the services there has not been any entertainment arranged, there never is this time of the year, but that is not to say we haven't been planning for spring and summer events. You may recall one or two people who have worked so hard over many years have stepped down and as luck has it we have got people to take over and they are putting a programme of perhaps different style events together to entertain the community. Your favourite 'Lunchtime Concerts' will return with a new look but at the time of writing I am waiting for their summer programme and when I receive

it I will let you all know what's going on. A new committee has also been set up to organise the Christmas Market but that's far in the future for we all need to enjoy a good sunny summer to buck us all up. One thing is for certain 'The Big Sing' will be back on August 11th. There are other outside events that go on also in this parish church so keep looking at those boards for more information. The Summer fete is gathering momentum and next month I should be able to tell you fully what we intend to put on and this lively occasion's new name. History John Doe of Diss began life in a small shop at the top of St Nicholas Street in 1983. It stocked carpet remnants and flooring samples. It had been the lifelong dream of John Doe and his wife Angela. John himself had worked in the carpet trade since 1964 as a salesman for Aldrich Bros, Brush and Wholesale Carpeting Company. There, he learnt the importance of good advice and service which was to stand him in good stead in his new business. At the start, John used his own garage for storage and sons Edward and Charles would help unroll and cut the carpet to length in the evenings and at weekends. Eventually, in 1985, the renovation of a new showroom was completed after John Doe expanded into the shop next door. It created a two-floor showroom and office. As time passed and the business grew, John Doe also acquired a warehouse showroom on easier than ever. I collect...Tottenham Hotspur football cards and stickers

Tim with Jimmy Greaves I have been a Tottenham Hotspur fan my whole life. I was born in Southgate, North London and have had the pleasure of seeing and meeting some of their legends both past and present including Jones, Greaves, Jennings, Mackay, Hoddle, Ardilles, Ginola, Gascoigne, Klinsmann, Sheringham and topping the list - Bill Nicolson (Mr Tottenham!). Although I've followed Spurs since I was a boy, I only really started collecting trade cards and stickers about seven years ago - I wish I'd started earlier! Up until then, I'd collected all sorts of Spurs memorabilia including badges, autographs, photographs and books but I decided to downsize and spend my money concentrating on and collecting cards and stickers. My collection is divided into four categories. Firstly tobacco cards - these were found in packets of cigarettes from companies such

as Churchman, Gallaher, Hill, Ogdens and Godfrey Phillips. Secondly, there are those cards found with non-tobacco items such as Brooke Bond tea, Kellogs Cereals, A&BC bubble gum and newspapers like the Daily Mirror. Cards originate from the 1800s and in the early days they were not in sets of your particular team. In the mid 1970s companies such as Topps and FKS issued sets but various cards were sold in packets so you had a challenge on your hands to complete your set by swapping them at school.

The third category I use is football stickers from companies such as FKS, Merlin, Panini and Topps. My final category I call 'today' and these are more modern cards and stickers which are issued in

squad sets. Collecting these sets still involves lots of swapping but now you can also buy any odd ones that you require from the manufacturers to complete your set. I also have a fascination for Brazil (Pele, Zico, Socrates, Ronaldo etc), the colour yellow, the flair and flamboyancy of 'The Beautiful Game" and their incredible skills. These days the players are Europebased and not in their homeland. That brilliant football of the 1950s to 1990s seems to have passed by but the odd moment of brilliance is still to be seen at times! I have a small collection of Brazilian cards and stickers which I keep in their very own folder. My all-time favourite Spurs player is Jimmy Greaves who I have met on a number of occasions. I have over 100 different cards and stickers of him in Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham and England colours. Last November he was at a talk show at the Fisher Theatre in Bungay and I took along my collection to show him - he was very impressed!

At present, I have a collection of about 19,000 cards and stickers and I'm still on the look-out for more. On average I spend about £15 per card….the most expensive one I've bought was £30. But it's possible to spend hundreds of pounds - in some very rare cases - even £1000 on one card if you have the cash! I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me with my collection including Garry at FCCM, John at Sporting Collectibles, Paul at KPM, Andy at Football Cards UK and Alan in Bushey Heath. The bathroom I walked into on day one was horrific, complete with cowboy swing doors. So, like the kitchen, this room definitely needed some work. The first step was to remove the outside store that was part of the room and create one big open room. This also let in a south facing window and has given a brilliant light to the room. Hating baths, I decided not to squeeze a bath into the space and make the room feel squashed. Instead I chose a larger shower enclosure, complete with tower shower. I could spend hours in a shower so it was perfect for

me. Space was always a niggling thought in the back of my head with this bathroom. Wall hung sink shelves are a perfect way of creating a sense of space. By allowing the eye to still see the floor underneath the sink, it tricks the mind that the sink doesn't take up space. I also opted for a concealed cistern with back to wall toilet. Boxing behind the toilet and sink with the same tiles I used on the floor and in the shower concealed the cistern and created a deep shelf that I could fill with beautiful bathroom pieces. Instead of just having a functional bathroom, I wanted

a room I could spend time in, and my hunt for an armchair or stool still continues. My chrome and grey colour scheme for the room makes the room feel modern and light. The pink flecks in the stone shelving add a sense of warmth to the room and will be a perfect colour to pick up in the soft furnishings. Hallways are a brilliant place to do something dramatic. Scouring the Little Greene Paint chart, my eyes were instantly

drawn to the colour adventurer. Instead of painting the walls in the deep aubergine colour I decided to paint the ceiling, creating a dramatic entrance. I also chose a set of three lights to run down the hallway and the patterned kilner jars cast a gorgeous patterned light across the dark ceiling.

Keep Yer Heel Down Bor! Wotcha!... Believe it or not we used to sell produce from our market garden (pictured right) at Blo Norton. We'd put a home made sign outside the gate chalked up with whatever we'd got surplus of. I remember putting one up advertising cres for sale. My dad had great pleasure in telling me it should be 'cress.' And younger brother, Doug, even added a 'slogan' to one of his, writing 'Strawberries makes a lovely tea!' In the days before 'pick your own' became the rage, we'd already started by opening strawberry beds for the public to pick jam strawberries. This was only done after the first and larger strawberries had been picked by us and sent to Covent Garden market. Smaller strawberries make the best jam anyway. I always loved picking the first strawberries. Under glass at first of course three or four of them would fill the ¼lb punnet that they were marketed in. It was a lovely sight to see the fruit making a sea of red and green (calyx) before the punnets were packed ready for Covent Garden. So it was sad to receive a message from our salespeople that they wanted the green calyces turned over! Reason being that after travelling overnight, and then time in a shop window the calyx didn't look so attractive! I've decided to grow strawberries again, but will stick to the old varieties Cambridge Favourite and Royal Sovereign because, I've noticed with newer types that the calyces don't come out easily! The Norfolk Big Switch and Save is on Over 800,000 households in Norfolk are being urged to sign up for the Norfolk Big Energy Switch. Five local authorities across Norfolk have got together to establish a dedicated Collective Energy Switching programme to get people to join together in a collective bulk-buying group to get cheaper gas and electricity tariffs. Residents can sign up by visiting www.bigswitchandsave. co.uk from the comfort of their own home. If you don’t have access to the internet you can sign up by calling your local council or pop into one of the Council’s customer service centres where staff will be able to help you. People will need a recent energy bill, an annual statement is best. Anyone can sign up to save but there’s no obligation to go ahead. Once the auction is completed everybody will be informed of how much they could save. If it turns out

you are one of the very few who are already on a lower tariff you simply don’t swap. It is estimated that 61,000 homes across Norfolk are in fuel poverty, which means more than 10 per cent of income is spent on electricity and gas. William Nunn, Leader of Breckland Council said; “We need to put pressure on energy suppliers who continue to impose major price rises on households. I would really encourage everyone to sign up to find out if they could get a better deal. Can I cut down my trees? By Joan Garnham, Waveney Tree Specialists. Not necessarily. Local Councils have a legal duty to protect trees. They can designate the area a Conservation Area or can make a tree preservation order (TPO). In either case, permission to do any work on a tree must be applied for – it doesn’t matter who owns the tree. Why? To protect trees which are particularly attractive; protect important trees or groups of trees; protect woodland; protect wildlife habitats. Often permission to build new houses is given on the condition that the existing trees are carefully preserved; so when the house is sold, the new owner will not be able to cut down the tree. You do not need to own the tree to apply for a TPO but the person who will decide is the Tree Officer employed by the Council. To find out if either condition applies, contact your local District Council and ask for the planning

department, they will tell you whether you are in a Conservation Area or whether you own a tree with a TPO. The system allows essential and sensible work to be carried out. The forms are available on the web or the council will send you one. The Tree Officer will probably want to see the tree before passing judgment. This is a free service but beware - to work on a tree in these circumstances without permission can incur a fine of up to £20,000!! Permission will take about 6 weeks unless one of the 3 Ds applies; Dead, Dying or Dangerous. It's still a good idea to check that the Tree Officer also thinks it necessary. The most sensible route is to get a good tree surgeon to advise you; they work closely with Tree Officers; they should not charge for this and will usually do all the necessary paperwork. The 2012 Workshop was held over the weekend of 2nd – 4th November and a staff of 12 professional tutors helped players to achieve untold heights in performing works by Brahms and Schubert. Meet the PVO's Musical Director Margery Baker...

The Pulham Orchestra’s Musical Director Margery Baker is a professional conductor with a strong background in education. Margery’s Norfolk connection began when she worked as a lecturer at Keswick Hall College of Education, which was a vibrant and energetic place for music making. It was in 1982, at a performance of Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte conducted by Margery at the College, that the seeds of the Pulham Orchestra were sown, for this was where its Founder, Dr Patrick Rawlence, first met Margery. Margery spent 13 years as Musical Director of the Eye Bach Choir and has worked with the North Norfolk Chamber Opera. And not content with just the Pulham Orchestra, she has been Musical Director of the Wymondham Youth Orchestra since its formation by Kay Dorling in 1988. Margery gives much of her professional time to amateur organisations, with music education at the forefront of her work. On top of her busy schedule she has found time to

accompany the British Soprano, Lindsay Gowers and struck up a partnership with Valerie Denny – a former colleague from Keswick Hall – performing a two-piano repertoire. Pulham Orchestra’s Leader, Martin Wyatt, has this to say about Margery: “Amateur orchestras totally depend on their conductors for inspiration and organisation and in Margery Baker the Pulham Orchestra has been led by an outstanding musician whose enthusiasm is for local amateur musicianship, which she can coax to a good level of performance skills. Margery has been the backbone and driving force of this orchestra from its inception. Her huge energy, commitment, skill and dedicated hard work – much of which is behind the scenes, between rehearsals and never noticed by the orchestra or public – have been an inspiration for us all. Not by chance have several of the orchestra been Musical Directors in their own right; I run orchestras and choirs of my own, but regard Margery’s conducting skills as a mentoring service; she always has new ideas, positive and practical ways of improving instrumental skills and a warm-hearted endearing approach to teaching that brings out the best from the team in front of her.”

The Sweet Truth about Sugar and Weight Loss From Fit Club, Diss.

As a personal trainer and tutor of anatomy and physiology I have a keen interest as to how the body works and why people come to the gym but do not lose the weight they want despite exercising. The bottom line is you cannot train over a bad diet especially one high in sugar. Over the past 10 years I have noticed an increase in the amount of sugar that people consume through the food they eat and the drink they drink; I might even go as far as to say an `addiction` to sugar is what has happened without them realising it. Diets over the past years have cut down on fats and made people more aware of the ones to avoid but now sugar is the greater evil due to

its effects on our blood sugar and insulin levels within the body. Our blood needs only around a teaspoon of sugar circulating in it to take part in activities and it is our insulin that makes sure that there is only ever around this level at any one time. The more sugary foods we eat the more insulin will be released and if we repeatedly consume high sugary foods throughout the day our pancreas has to release insulin for longer and each time we consume such foods as most sweeteners, grains, cookies, pastries, cakes and other high glycaemic carbohydrates it is leaving an excess of insulin in our blood stream. Insulin works by stimulating your cells to sponge up this excess sugar out of your

bloodstream. Once inside your cells, sugar is used for energy, with any excess amount being converted to fat tissue. If you have too much sugar floating around in your blood vessels, it is likely that you also have too much insulin travelling through your system as well. What's the problem with having too much insulin in your circulation? Excess insulin is known to cause: • Weight gain, since insulin promotes the storage of fat • Brain fogginess • Intestinal bloating • Sleepiness especially after meals • Increased blood pressure

What can you do with your food and lifestyle choices to support healthy blood sugar and insulin levels? 1. Clean up your diet to include foods low on the glycaemic index. 2. Reduce or eliminate your intake of sugar and all foods that contain sugar. Some of the most concentrated sources of sugar are soda, cookies, chocolate bars, donuts, pastries, ice cream, and ketchup. 3. Be aware that so called 'Reduced Sugar or No Added Sugar' does not mean it is better as manmade sugars such as maltodextrin,

Diss Woodturning Club New members welcome! The Diss and District Woodturning Club is a small, friendly group, with both male and female members, based in Redgrave. It has the use of an excellent workshop and has a fabulous Jet lathe capable of carrying out all types of turning, from the most intricate to quite literally treetrunks! All categories of woodturners are welcome to join the club, from the absolute beginner to the expert! Help and guidance is available for all, irrespective of experience or ability, to develop your turning technique, improve your designs or tackle that project you have always dreamed of! Some of the new items to be included in the test as ‘Testable Components’ from 20 March 2013 are: Battery security, Trailer sockets, steering locks, brake fluid warning lamp, engine mountings and malfunction indicator lamps on the dashboard that indicate defective electronic power steering, electronic parking brake control, electronic stability control and secondary restraint systems (SRS/airbag systems). As far as changes to the test content are concerned, VOSA has already been analysing the requirements of the new Directive and working out how to implement them. We started this earlier in the

year by talking with representatives of the MOT trade at our regular Trade User Group and VTS Council meetings. Both VOSA and the Department for Transport (DfT) are keen to ensure that any changes to the test are introduced in as practical a way as possible, keeping the burden on the trade to a minimum and ideally keeping the changes cost neutral. In many cases, the changes shouldn’t necessarily lead to an increase in average test times. A good example is the Testers already check the dashboard for other lamps, so no extra time would be required for this addition to the test.
