Diss Town Council News New Diss Audio Walk Launched. A launch event to introduce a new audio tour of Diss was held on 28th June. Representatives from local tourist based business and other invited guests met at Mere’s Mouth and walked the route whilst listening to the informative commentary highlighting the many points of interest around the town. The Diss tour is part of a wider project by the Waveney Valley Towns Group which has developed free audio walks for seven towns in the Waveney Valley. The towns of Loddon, Bungay, Beccles, Halesworth, Harleston, Diss and Eye began working together in 2010 and having secured funding of £42,500 from the Big Lottery Awards for All fund and the Rural Development Programme for England, commissioned Nick Jenkins of Sounding Board Productions to produce individual tours for each town. The audio tours are designed to concentrate on the unique features of each town as well as historical information and include interviews with local characters who share their memories and
4
experiences. The walks are lively, interesting and full of anecdotes and interesting historical facts. The Diss walk starts at the Mere’s Mouth and follows a route around the historical parts of the town taking approximately one hour to complete. All of the tours are available to download for free from the website www.explorewaveneyvalley.com in either mp3 or ‘app’ format for smart phones. Or you can listen to all or part of the walks direct from the website, in the comfort of your own home. Handsets with the walk pre-loaded are available from the Diss Tourist Information Centre. A beautifully illustrated brochure has been produced featuring information about the towns along with maps of the routes and will be distributed throughout East Anglia. Although the project was designed to promote tourism in the Waveney Valley area the walks are for local people as well. Why not check out the website and give it a go. You may even discover something new about the town where you live.
Attleborough Town Council News Local Grants Scheme - The Town Council’s grants scheme ensures that local organisations seeking funding for community projects in Attleborough can potentially apply for a financial contribution from the Council. There is a pot of money set aside for local grants and an upper limit of £250 per application applies per applicant. The scheme commenced in May 2012 and to date three applicants have been awarded funding.
in the heart of the town centre. It provides an information service to townsfolk and visitors alike, giving details of local and regional attractions and also acting as a point of contact to book transport under the community car scheme. The Council is presently reviewing the service provided by the TIC – which is staffed entirely by volunteers – and further details of the anticipated re-vamp will be published in due course.
Cemetery Security - It has sadly come to light recently that instances of unauthorised removal of grave ornaments at Attleborough cemetery in Queens Road have occurred. The Council requests that visitors to the cemetery be vigilant and report any potential loss of grave ornaments to the police (nonemergency telephone number 111) as a possible theft. On a trial basis the Council has decided that the vehicular gates to the cemetery be locked between 4 p.m. and 8.30 a.m. and will continue to keep cemetery security under review.
Attleborough Town Council website - In this electronic age it is increasingly important to have an online presence and in recognition of this the Council maintains its own website, which is regularly being updated and expanded as resources allow. Click on http:// attleboroughtc.norfolkparishes.gov. uk/ to visit our homepage.
Tourist Information Centre The town’s TIC is located on the ground floor of the Town Hall right
Mayoral Engagements - The Mayor, Cllr Sam Taylor, had a busy schedule of engagements in June, attending a total of 31 functions and highlighted by attending the High School on the 22nd and 23rd of June for the prom and torch relay staged by Breckland Council.

Diss United In Song Following a summer of terrible weather I take my hat off to those who organised outdoor events in Diss but most seemed to go well amid the showers.
Now the largest INDOOR summertime event in Diss is about to take place. Now in it's 8th season and called 'The Big Sing Special' for this year as our nation is experiencing a memorable time you will really enjoy what I've arranged for you all. Hymn requests have been sorted, and my haven't you submitted some great hymns. During the past month I paid a visit to the East Anglian Air Ambulance head quarters at Norwich Airport and the staff there really appreciate us
choosing this annual sing as their charity. This year I have slightly altered the programme but what will never change is that you the general public will always choose the hymns. To make this occasion a great success and to help keep the Air Ambulance airborne we need you to fill St. Mary's Church Diss on Sunday 12th August commencing at 6.30pm. You've all done this every year since 2005 and I look forward to each and every one of you doing this again. Don't forget the church organist and choir plus the Diss Salvation Army Band will be there to enhance the singing. So never mind the weather, let's sing along together and make this an evening to remember and enjoy. Gerry Hosking Arranger and Presenter.

Diss Museum
Malaysia visit 2012
Then and now...
The South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band. Then...
Now... Diss Museum recently received a collection of slides of the town in the 1970s and 80s. Photo-Elite on Market Hill digitised them and revealed views of the town that have now vanished. The picture above shows the old Church Hall at the foot of Mere Street, the Georgian terrace (noted in the Betjeman film) on the right; and
6
the Electricity Board building in the background. This part of the town has changed completely since this photo was taken.
On 15th August 2012, 40 members of the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band (S.N.Y.S.B.) will travel to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in Malaysia for 2 weeks on an exciting musical tour. The Youth band who are based in Diss will take part in musical workshops with Malaysian school
children throughout the trip and perform a sell-out concert in Kuching for 3,500 people organised by the Rotary Club of Malaysia in aid of a local Children’s Hospice. S.N.Y.S.B. will be joined by 25 players from Germany for the tour, enabling them to expand their links with the German band some of whom have already visited the U.K. and performed at the Framlingham concert with S.N.Y.S.B in April earlier this year. The Diss Band have been invited for a return visit to Germany in 2013. S.N.Y.S.B. has been actively fundraising to support the Malaysian tour, with individual band members organising various fundraising events such as a Coast to Coast Cycle Ride, clothes and can collections and busking by the band in Norwich and Diss. Further support would be gratefully received, donations can be made via Your Local magazine or for more information visit our website: www.snysb.org.uk Further details may also be obtained by contacting Phil Anderson – Press and Publicity Officer on 01953 860370 or Mike Booty – Musical Director on 01379 641580.

Diss in the 1930s Continuing our serialisation of historical editions of the Diss Express, here we take a glimpse of life in and around the town on February 10th 1933. Crime - Three people were fined 5/- for riding a bicycle without a front light including farmer's assistant Gordon Nelson Buck (26) of Wood Farm, Denton. The defendant said his lamp had just gone out when PC Bryer stopped him. Robert Shannon of 5, Park Place, Stratford, London, E15, a lorry driver was fined ÂŁ1 and 4/for driving a motor lorry at a speed exceeding 16 m.p.h at Brockdish on January 23rd. PC Smith, mobile officer, said he was on mobile patrol duty at 10.50am on the main Scole / Harleston Road at Brockdish travelling towards Harleston when he caught up with an International Stores lorry and followed it for about 1 and a half miles to test the speed. During that time the speedometer on his machine registered from 24 to 26 miles an hour. He
stopped the lorry near the Needham Sand and Gravel Pits and the driver, defendant told him he was in a bit of a hurry as it had taken him two hours to start the lorry that morning owing to the frost. Theatre production postponed. Owing to the prevailing epidemic of influenza which had laid low several of the principals and members of the chorus, the Diss Choral Society have decided to postpone the production of 'Olivette' originally fixed for next week, until March 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th. Deaths - Regret will be felt in the neighbourhood at the death of Mrs. Rebecca Warne, which took place rather suddenly on Saturday at her residence at Pixie Green, Wingfield,
Deceased who was 71 years of age had been ailing for some time but did not take to her bed until the day before her death. Not only the inhabitants of the village of Scole but also those of the villages for miles around assembled at the Scole Parish Church on
Monday to pay their last respects to the late Mr. Henry William Riches, or as he was more familiarly know "Tim." Always of a genial disposition, his death in the prime of life came as a great shock to his hundreds of friends and acquaintances.
Diss WI Well this month we had a very special 'Question Time' meeting. We had a panel of 4 local members of the community, John Doe, Rev Ben Sasarda, Polly Munro and our very own Jean Wills from "Your Local " magazine, the evening was lively and the questions varied. We were thoroughly entertained with views on
womens lib, childhood memories, favourite tv programmes, who we would like at a dinner party, and much much more. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We meet every second wednesday of the month and new members are always welcome. Rosie.
Waveney Springs into action this Summer! Summer is to be a busy time for the Art Collective Waveney Springs.
From the beginning of August to the end of the month shopkeepers in Diss will be displaying works of art by the group as a precursor to their Open Studio weekends in September. It is the third year running that Waveney Springs has worked in conjunction with the shops and the artists are delighted that once more they have this opportunity and are very grateful to the managers of those shops which are taking part. Another dimension will be added to the town for those shopping in Diss. Following the Art In Shop Windows, Waveney Springs will be holding a taster exhibition of their work in Diss Corn Hall Gallery.
This will open on the 3rd of September and continue until Saturday 15th which will be the first weekend of the Collective's fifth annual Open Studios. The second weekend will be that of the 22nd and 23rd. Waveney Springs comprises of artists who live and work within a ten mile radius of Diss. Their work covers a great variety of media from oil paintings and watercolours to textiles, sculptures, etchings and lino prints. Feline Care - Cat Rescue and Homing Centre Poor Annabel has been with us since October last year which feels rather unfair considering how lovely she is at meeting and greeting visitors! We suspect her big bushy coat is daunting people as she will need some grooming but she does keep it in very good shape herself. We trapped her and her three kittens after they were dumped just off an A11 sliproad – only the person who dumped them knows how many they abandoned so we can only hope we caught the whole family. She's a giant kitten of an adult cat who sometimes plays rough so needs gentle and confident handling to encourage her to behave herself! For this reason she would be suited to an experienced home, preferably without children or other cats, but certainly without dogs as she is aggressive towards them. At Feline Care we are home to well over 100 cats at any time and some, perhaps more difficult to handle or with health problems, will stay here for life and so we pride ourselves on creating the best possible home for all felines. If you're thinking of adopting a new furry family member then please make an appointment to visit so we can introduce you to cats suitable for you, your lifestyle and home as anyone
who knows cats knows every cat is different! If you can help in any way or are thinking of adopting a new companion, or mouser, then please get in touch: 01953 71852, info@felinecare.org.uk, www.felinecare.org.uk,www. Feline Care, Roudham Road, East Harling NR16 2QN.
Raising money for EACH Hip hip hooray! - Conkers Day Nursery. Three cheers for the children at Conkers Day Nursery for raising over two thousand pounds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice, (EACH) after holding a sponsored walk. One of the children attending Conkers receives much needed support from EACH and a sponsored walk was held to give thanks. “We didn’t expect to raise this much,” admitted delighted manager Nicola Hilton. “Parents have been especially generous and

local company Midwich donated a large sum to start us off.” Situated on a farm in Diss means children at Conkers benefit from walks in the countryside, knowing that other children have benefited from this activity too is definitely worth cheering about. On rare occasions the Rotary Club in Diss makes a special award in recognition and, of course, appreciation of particularly outstanding service by one of its members. This is typically a dedicated commitment over a sustained period of time clearly living up to the Rotary mantra "Service above self." There have already been two such occasions this year. Both cases of people well known in our local community but nevertheless individuals with a modest attitude and who never want to be in the limelight. Earlier this year Ivor Dennison received his award from club president Simon Noble to popular acclaim from the club and guests present at the meeting and this last week James Kay was also honoured, much to his surprise. Again president Simon spoke in glowing terms of the contribution to the local community made by these outstanding members of Rotary International.

I Collect Elephants ...
I've always thought t h e r e ' s something special about elephants. I love their family bond, the way they care for their young, their intelligence, even the way they mourn the death of a family member. Then, about 35 years ago, someone bought me an elephant ornament and I fell in love with it. From then on people kept buying me elephants for birthdays
and christmases and my collection started to grow. In 1989, my husband Mervyn arranged for a local artist - Mike Webb who does Mere Quacks - to paint me an elephant picture which now has pride of place in our sitting room. I have elephants made from all sorts of things including china, wood, stone, glass and even wire! I love how different they all are. Recently someone gave me a very unusual elephant that they'd found in a charity shop in Norwich. I think it's made from soapstone and it depicts an image of an elephant in a buddha-type pose. I also have a set of

two elephants, one Indian and one African, that shows the real difference between the two different types - African elephants have bigger ears.
Recently Mervyn and I were in Stowmarket when I spotted a very unusual looking elephant in a shop window. He's a very modern elephant with his trunk stretched out straight in front and is actually a moneybox. I have a hand-carved elephant from Kenya, one cut into glass that was made in Sweden and two Langham Glass elephants. Most of my elephants are kept in a display case in the dining room, the largest of which is a limited edition elephant called the
Patriarch which I've had for over 20 years. My biggest elephant of all is kept in the hallway and is made of brass. I've had him for years and he's still got corks on the end of his tusks that we put on to stop our grandchildren hurting themselves on the sharp points. One thing that's really important is that all the elephants in the house have to face an outside door otherwise it could lead to bad luck. I don't know where that came from but I stick to the rule just in case! Six years ago my son Carl and his wife Lisa even adopted me an elephant in Kenya called Karuba and I get yearly updates on her progress which is lovely. I've seen elephants at Colchester Zoo but my ultimate goal would be to see elephants in the wild but I'm not sure whether I'll ever get Mervyn to go! Maureen Hickford.

Fundraising Fever at the Park Hotel Tracey Davies, owner of the Park Hotel in Diss is on a mission to raise money.
Top of Ben Nevis with Alli and Anne Beckett-Allen.
As owner of the Park Hotel in Diss, Tracey Davies is a very busy woman. But that doesn't stop her raising thousands of pounds for charity each year. This year's chosen charity is Breast Cancer Awareness and Tracey has organised a number of fund-raising ventures to support them. So far this year she's completed The 3 Peak Challenge by climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 24 hours and completed the St Edmunds Wheel
100 mile bike ride around Suffolk and Norfolk. In total, she has so far raised ÂŁ1000. 'I don't believe in waving sponsorship forms under people's noses,' explains Tracey. 'Instead we have a donation box for people to leave money if they so wish.' This year, Tracey still has three challenges left that she hopes to complete. On August 5th she will be taking on the Suffolk Coast 60 mile cycle ride, on September

30th she'll be attempting the Cambridge to Norwich 76 mile cycle ride and finally, on October 13th, she'll be taking part in the
Norfolk Ultra Run where she will attempt to run 40 miles along the Norfolk Coast - the equivalent to a marathon and a half.
The 100 mile bike ride with Richard and Simon.

'I hadn't been on a bike for a year when I did the 100 mile cycle so that was quite tough,' says Tracey. 'Aside from the 3 peaks challenge, my biggest challenge to date will be the Norfolk Ultra Run. I've run a marathon previously but 40 miles is another half marathon again. It's a tough race anyway as the route doesn't follow roads but instead goes through woodland and along shingle beach which is really hard to run on.' But with a bit of grit and determination, there's no doubt Tracey will achieve her goals. Aside from all her fundraising, mother of four children Tracey, is also incredibly busy at the Park Hotel.
With a newly renovated restaurant, the hotel is attracting more diners than ever and is just about to appear in the EDP Food Guide for the first time. Open to non-residents for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the hotel serves food all day. On Sunday lunchtimes, the Carvery is very popular, as is the two-for-one ribs night promotion on a Sunday evening. Alongside great dining, the hotel also offers private rooms for functions catering for up to 250 people. They also offer wedding packages to suit all needs and budgets, not to mention 19 ensuite bedrooms and one self-catering cottage.

Review: A Unique Restaurant
For a mouth-wateringly excellent Indian meal, head to Unique Spice in Carbrooke, Watton. I'd never been to Carbrooke, just outside Watton before I headed over there on a Monday night for a meal at the Unique Spice Indian Restaurant. Now, I've no doubt I'll be heading over there on a regular basis! Unique Spice is a new Indian Restaurant run by the same people who own the Rose of India in Attleborough and the Spice Cottage in Diss. Both of these restaurants have an excellent reputation and it's safe to say that I believe Unique Spice will follow in their footsteps.
After sitting down and ordering Tiger beer, my partner Gary and I had a look through the menu. It was filled with not just the usual Indian dishes but a large selection of things I'd never heard of before. And they all sounded amazing! Wanting to try something new, I opted for the Chicken Pardaneshi which was chicken stuffed with mushrooms, fresh coriander, cheese and onion grilled and served with thick sauce. Gary went for Chicken Korahi, a medium hot dish.
Alongside this we ordered mushroom rice, coconut rice, a plain nan, a garlic nan and some onion bhajis. When the food came out, it looked spectacular. Gary was particularly pleased that the food was piping hot as this is something he hates about some restaurants. The food tasted as good as it looked and we each tried a bit of everything. The portion sizes were generous and by the end we were both feeling very full! Throughout the meal, the service was excellent.
Despite feeling like I couldn't eat another thing, when I spotted coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell on the dessert menu I had to give it a go. Gary tucked into a toffee ice cream dessert that was served inside an attractive pot. All in all, the food was exceptional, the service fantastic and the restaurant's atmosphere was welcoming. We will definitely be going back as soon as we can! For bookings or to order a takeaway call 01953 884231.

Is ‘Let to Let’ the new way to move house ?
Diss Lettings Agency Martin & Co explains the benefits of this new trend. Many people will be familiar with the concept of ‘buy-to-let’, says Martin Scowcroft, Managing Director of Martin & Co Diss. This is where a property is bought for investment purposes and the owner rents the property out in order to produce an income and/or benefit from the capital appreciation of the property. So what is 'let-to-let'? This is where instead of selling their property
and then buying another one in the normal way people are renting their main property out and then renting their next property as tenants. What has led to this new trend? Many potential sellers are looking to rent until prices hopefully rise again. The costs of selling and then buying a property can be off-putting. When stamp duty, estate agents and solicitor’s fees are taken into
consideration these can easily be over £10,000 for a family home. With typical tenancy agreements being between 6 and 12 months in length, renting out your property can be flexible and fast moving. It is not impossible for an empty property to be surveyed, marketed and then let to fully referenced tenants in under a week. Compared with selling this is fast
paced. In reality it means tenants in your house, money in your pocket! Martin & Co are ready to help those that are either looking to move in a more flexible and speedy way or those that have their property on the market for a long period of time and consequently becoming frantic to find a solution. Martin & Co can be contacted on 01379 790008 or by email: diss@martinco.com

Whether you’re looking to buy your very first home, upsize or down size, Persimmon Homes Anglia can help. With plenty of housing schemes and finance options available, it has never been a better time to take those first steps to owning your own home. Persimmon Homes has one of the largest selections of properties on the market, giving people plenty of choice when searching for their dream home. There are many developments across Anglia with NewBuy proving very popular for people looking to get onto the property ladder. There are many advantages to buying a new build home, from customizing the design to choosing the finishings but one of the best
20
things is NewBuy . The programme is the first ever government-backed mortgage indemnity scheme that aims to help homebuyers who only have access to 5% deposit. “NewBuy opens up a 95 per cent mortgage product to both first time buyers and those looking to move up the property ladder. Importantly, it has no salary cap and is available to purchasers of new homes up to the value of £500,000,” says Andrew Fuller, managing director of Persimmon Homes Anglia. Already living in a property? Persimmon Homes can help get you moving through their Part Exchange and Part Exchange Plus scheme. If you qualify for the Part Exchange Plus scheme, then things couldn’t be simpler. Persimmon Homes will arrange for at least two valuations, agree a market price and buy your existing property from you. There are no hidden marketing costs, no upsetting chains to break down and you can move when you want to. If Persimmon Homes can’t buy your home they can use all their expertise and contacts to
help you sell your current home. Again, they will arrange the valuations for you; agree a price and then market the property on your behalf. “The Part Exchange schemes are perfect for those looking to upsize or downsize and any one of our sales advisors across the area would be more than happy to help,” added Andrew. Persimmon Homes Anglia has developments across the region including Ipswich, Harleston, Diss and Wymondham. For further information visit www.persimmonhomes.com or visit your nearest marketing suite.

Decorating a child's bedroom Do it together and have fun! With the summer holidays upon us and the children off school for many weeks we find it’s a great time to decorate their rooms. Not only can it become a fun activity to keep them occupied but doesn’t interrupt their routine during term time. If ever there was an opportunity to play with colour then kids rooms is definitely the place. I would always advise on being adventurous with the walls using a mixture of paint and one of the many fantastic wallpapers available. I just love the ‘Russian dolls’ wallpaper for little girls rooms, it works well as there is a variety of colours to pick out for accessories. Window treatments are really important, blackout blinds or curtains are essential to keep out the light and a peaceful night sleep! Good quality curtains can be a big investment so try to choose something neutral such as stripes or a plain that could continue to be used as the child gets older. If the décor
26
is delicate such as a ‘princess room’ with soft voile at the window you can always use a blackout roller blind neatly tucked behind the curtains to keep out the light but without spoiling the look. Boys rooms can be just as much fun with themes ranging from using the colours of their favourite sports team to tractors, cars and aeroplanes. We always talk to our clients about storage and in a child’s room this is no exception- but also use this as an opportunity to clear out all those toys that are no longer played with. If your child tends to go through phases of what they like then rather than creating a fully themed room a cost effective solution is to add interest through accessories such as lamps and cushions or why not buy a blank canvas for them to create their own artwork that they can paint over time and time again… (another activity for one of our far too many rainy days!)

Keep Yer Heel Down Bor! A ‘slightly on the huh’ look at gardening. Wotcha!... This is the time of year when my wife and I have a fight. No, not because the sun gets to our heads – no chance of that this summer methinks – no, it's over freezer space! Every year she asks me why Proven: small seeds means less yield I grow so many broad beans? I usually answer that I am cutting down. But deep down I have a secret fear that I won't have enough. That will not be the case this year though. I haven't told her yet (she's in Finland visiting family) but the haul is 53lbs (24kg)! So I'm in deep trouble, as she will be coming back loaded with rye Proven: small seeds means less yield bread and Finnish sausage et al and at the moment there's no room in the freezer! One of three experiments I'm carrying out this year is to see if smaller seed does produce smaller plants or less yield. And in the case of broad beans the answer is yes. They didn't produce smaller plants, but the yield was down considerably – although the picture shows that 8.7lbs is not bad! The best double row (8m in length) harvested 12.7lbs. In view of the weather (I've measured 1¾ins of rain in June and so far (16th) 1½ins in July) I'm going to say keep on a 'sloshin' and remember, (1) what you've saved on water bills, (2) the hours banked through not having to water and (3) the time you would have spent sunbathing! PubGuide What makes a good Pub?
Well we could suggest what makes a good pub and what sets it apart from bars, Hotel Lounges or continental cafes. Firstly it has everything to do with the landlords. Good landlords are always the key to a good pub - it's the heart of the community. The London Tavern in the very centre of Attleborough; this popular pub are hosting an August Bank Holiday Beer Festival. The Four Horseshoes Thornham Magna is a traditional pub that serves food every day with a carvery on Sundays. A family run pub with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The Inn on the Green at New Buckenham has been completely refurbished, it has a delightful courtyard garden ideal for summer dining, with food cooked to order

by three chefs. The Gamekeeper is a beautiful, large beamed pub on the edge of Old Buckenham green. They serve a Sunday roast lunch from 12 –2.45 pm. Thwaite Bucks Head near Eye is now under new management. Richard Heywood and Sam Elstone have just re-opened this old public house on the A140 and serve a large selection of beers, lagers and ales including Adnams, Woodfordes Wherry and Greene King. At The Kings Head at North Lopham they are getting ready to ‘Sizz-Ale’ with a Sausage and Ale Festival over the August Bank Holiday. With over 100 special recipe sausages and twelve real ales
to try. There really is something for everyone. The Historic Green Dragon at Wymondham is situated right next to the Wymondham Abbey and this 15th century timbered building actually once belonged to the Abbey. Legend has it that there is an ancient tunnel below that used to connect the two buildings. They have real ales on offer as well as traditional home cooked food with a choice of over 100 single malt whiskies. From Friday the 24th August there will be an August Bank Holiday weekend Beer Festival, a whole weekend of local beers, local musicians and homecooked food.

Charity To Benefit From Local Peugeot Dealership Even the austerity of the current economic climate just doesn’t stop some people raising money for Children in Need and it certainly doesn’t stop some people doing some pretty painful and imaginative activities just to raise a pound or two to help out.

Local Suffolk Peugeot Main Dealer Pat Lewis held a Charity Evening in their showrooms in the village of Palgrave near Diss on Tuesday 3rd July to raise funds for the Children in Need charity. Local businesses, customers, friends and staff donated a wonderful array of prizes for the main event of the evening "The prize draw" which seemed to ensure that everyone won a prize. The cars were moved on to the forecourt to make space for a really good crowd that enjoyed
cheese & wine, coffee and tea and were entertained to a musical treat provided by the Norton Salvation Army Brass Band as other events ensued. Children in Need events invariably throw up their own individual headlines and this event was no different. • Dealership Director Patrick Lewis Runs 10 miles on the night for Charity. • Service & Parts Advisor Phil Jacobs cycles for 10 miles beside him.
• Hairy Sales Manager David Laws has full body wax – ooh that was painful. • Service & Parts Advisor Adrian Moyes cycles for two hours on an exercise bike in the Showroom. • Proprietor Pat Lewis has a Mohican!!!! The event generated a fantastic £2157 for the Charity. Pat Lewis thanked all the people that contributed to the successful evening for their generosity.

Motoring Your Local
10 top motoring tips for summer Things to remember before you set off... Those lazy hazy days of summer back when we were children. Being herded into a car at first light squabbling over who got to sit on which side of the car, getting miles down the road only to turn round to grab the forgotten picnic and then several hours later sat in queues of cars full of fighting families. Now of course it's you behind the wheel and your kids screaming in the back seat. Here, Your Local Magazine offers 10 top tips to take the heat out of holiday travel and to have a good trip. 1. Ensure the car is properly serviced in line with the manufacturers recommendations.
If at all possible have it done a couple of weeks before you go, just in case they find a major fault that needs fixing. 2. If a service isn't due make sure that you check the car over before setting off paying attention to condition of hoses coolant level and ensure all belts are not loose or cracked 3. Check tyres for pressure, and tread (don't forget the spare) for splits or bulges. Its likely that you will have to increase the pressure if the car is carrying a full load. 4. Don't get caught out-carry spare bulbs and fuses. It is annoying to be stranded for
the want of a tiny fuse to keep the radiator or headlights going. 5. Fill up with petrol check the oil and screen wash might be just as well to carry a spare bottle of screen wash. 6. Driving overnight, be sure you have had sufficient rest. Working all day and trying to drive all night is a recipe for disaster. Stop regularly for refreshments and comfort breaks. 7. Be sure that you have help with navigation. Sat Navs are helpful but if they are not available make sure that someone in the car can read the maps. 8. Travelling a long way Make sure that there is more than one
driver and change every three hours. 9. Travel Sickness can be a problem. Symptoms can be eased by keeping the car cool and well ventilated. Avoid too much food and fizzy drinks. 10. If you car overheats steam will rise from under the bonnet. Pull to the side and switch off the engine. Give plenty of time for it to cool down (at least 15 mins) before touching, otherwise you risk burns or scalds. Don't pour cold water onto it - you could crack the engine. Have a great trip!
Test drive the world’s most talked-about car Head to M.R.King & sons to see the Volvo V40 in action. For the chance to view the vehicle that has dominated car industry headlines since its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March, head to M.R. King & Sons Volvo dealership in Halesworth. The all-new Volvo V40 is a sporty five-door hatchback that incorporates class-leading emissions of 94g/km as well as world-first safety technology. Performance is delivered from a wide choice of both petrol and diesel engines. The luxury hatchback is available in ES, SE and SE LUX trim with Bluetooth, Electronic Climate Control, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, power windows, a leather steering wheel and gear knob fitted as standard. The most luxurious version of the Volvo V40, the SE Lux, offers leather-faced upholstery, 17 inch Mannan Alloy Wheels and LED day running lights as well as active bending xenon lights with a
headlight cleaning system. Its host of innovative features include the world’s first pedestrian airbag fitted as standard. Volvo’s City Safety low-speed collision avoidance system, which now operates at speeds of up to 31mph (currently 19mph on other models), keeps an eye on traffic in front and automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops – or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast. Priced from £19,745 on-theroad, the new V40 is also available with a highly competitive zero interest finance offer, subject to terms and conditions. Test drive bookings can be made by contacting M.R.King & Sons on 01986 874464, via email at enquire@mrking.co.uk or visit them on the web at www.mrking. co.uk – first deliveries will take place in September.

I am interested in the fragile and amorphous relationship that individuals and nations have with the past. Within my work, I explore past events as a means of making sense of the present asking, “How did we get here, politically, emotionally and intellectually?”. In recent years, I have contemplated my German heritage. I am fascinated by the way in which Germany erased its history and stories to move into a successful future. My work gives voice to some of these forgotten stories, hoping to shed some light into the dark past. In my work you will see examples of printing, painting and a combination of mixed media.
