New Councillors The Town Council welcomed two new members in Queens Ward, Jayne Owen and Tristan Ashby who replaced Shane Schucroft and Geoff Farrow respectively. The Council is now at full strength, with 15 members. For a full list of councillors and their contact details please see the Council’s website http://attleboroughtc. norfolkparishes.gov.uk/ Attleborough in Leaf The Council maintains an extensive tree estate numbering over 500 trees and following a comprehensive survey which prioritised tree work our contractors have recently been undertaking remedial work to prune or fell as necessary. In order to maintain the environmental attraction of green spaces in the town, the Council is driving a replanting scheme – Attleborough in Leaf – and is seeking donations and sponsorship for replacement trees. We have had a very positive response so far but further donations are always very gratefully received.

Anyone wishing to participate in this project is kindly asked to contact the Town Clerk through enquiries@attleboroughtc.org. uk or phone 01953 456194. Cheques can be made payable to Attleborough Town Council and will be used solely to source replacement trees. Market Attleborough market is held every Thursday on Queens Square car park between 8a.m. and 1p.m. The first market was established in the town as far back as 1226 and has continued ever since into the modern day. As well as professional traders, local people are encouraged to market their own crafts. Stalls are available at reasonable rates. The Council is looking to promote the traditional market for traders and customers alike. From January 2013 there will be an opportunity for a plant stall as the existing stallholder will be retiring. Anyone who is interested in hiring a market stall should contact the Town Clerk at the Town Hall.

Santa's early arrival in Diss

Do you remember this?

At St. Mary's Church.

Newcomers to Diss would hardly guess where these buildings were until recent years. On the left is the terrace of houses noted by John Betjeman in his 1963 film

Something About Diss. On the right is Chitty's Garage. In the background is Park House, which is still there. The terrace and garage were replaced by the supermarket at the south end of Mere Street. Chitty's garage was an L-shaped building which you could enter from Mere Street and come out on Park Road. The picture was provided by Diss Museum. Basil Abbott, Diss Museum.

Diss High School Leavers of 83 Reunion The Park Hotel, Diss, Saturday 18th May 2013 - 8pm onwards.

The man with the white beard and red coat would like it to be known that he will be making a special early arrival in Diss this year, so children bring along your family and friends to the GRAND CHRISTMAS MARKET to be held at St. Mary's Church Diss on Saturday 24th November 09.30 to 1.30pm. With one word name change to this annual and colourful occasion the committee are asking all visitors to come in via the church door instead of the hall door where if you are there early you will see and hear our MP Mr Richard Bacon open the largest church Christmas Market in the town. Following the opening we hope Father Christmas will make a noisy bell ringing entry and go straight to his

light and colourful grotto within the church itself. Browse the many stalls around the back of the church then make your way through the usual brightly lit corridor and into the hall where more stalls await your viewing. There you can have a sit down and enjoy a cuppa and even a warm lunch to make your visit enjoyable. Like previous years, easy-on-the-ear music will be playing because you don't want to be bombarded with constant Christmas carols that early. We hope that pupils from Diss High School will be present to entertain you in the church sometime during the four hours of interesting shopping which includes the popular bottle stall, tombola and grand raffle. Come then and enjoy your morning it will be very worth your visit. Gerry Hosking.

Redgrave Church needs you...

If so, we would love to see you at our 60th Birthday tea party on 24th November 2012 at the Salvation Army Community Centre, Sunnyside, Diss from 2pm to 4pm. There will be old photos and memorabilia to see. As part of

our birthday celebrations we have created a butterfly and bee friendly garden, and if you would like to make a contribution by bringing along a plant, we would be pleased to add it to our garden. Hope to see you there Elizabeth Hook (Akela).

Redgrave Church are looking for their very own Superstar! Next May, Redgrave Church Heritage Trust, supported by The Mere Players, will be staging a production of Jesus Christ Superstar! in the beautiful, historic surroundings of Redgrave Church. Whilst Andrew Lloyd Webber had the luxury of a

national TV show to seek out the singers required for this exciting and ambitious show, RCHT and Mere Players are hoping to find a pool of more local talent capable of reaching those high notes. Open Auditions will be held in January next year, but for all those aching to strut their stuff in this inspirational Rock Musical and itching to know more, there will be a presentation at Diss Junior School Hall at 2pm on Sunday November 25 where the director, Felicity Humfress, and the Musical Director, Keith O’Gorman, will outline what will be required of potential auditionees and their plans for what promises to be a unique and memorable event. If you are interested but can’t make this date or simply want more information contact Felicity Humfress on 01953 714926.

Operation Christmas Child Make a child smile.

For many years The Vine Church, Eye has been supporting the charity Samaritan's Purse in sending gifts to children in Eastern Europe and Africa who would not otherwise receive a Christmas present of any kind. This year they are asking for a super-human effort to push towards their 100 millionth shoebox!

Each box requires a £2.50 'shipping' donation, and if this is done online you will be informed to which country your shoebox was sent. Last year the 54 boxes that left the Vine Church went to Belarus. Making up a shoebox is fun to do, and the whole family can take part. Or you can organize a 'shoebox party' where everyone can bring items suitable for inclusion. More details and leaflets (which you must have) are available via operationchristmaschild.org. uk or from Paula Aiken, 01379 641407. Please hurry though, shoeboxes need to be at pick-up points by Nov.18th. 'Shoeboxes' can be converted from inkjet paper boxes!

Becoming a Retained firefighter - a rewarding and satisfying challenge Vacancies at Diss and Attleborough. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service covers the county of Norfolk with 41 stations, 39 of which have a retained

commitment. This means they are crewed by firefighters that live or work in the community and are able to respond at a moments notice to a fire call, or “shout”. To become a Retained firefighter you have to live or work within five minutes of the fire station and also be available during the key periods of cover for which the station has vacancies, during the working day for example. Full training is provided along with courses that can be transferred to you primary employment such as First Aid training and fire safety

training. We also provide a full uniform and paid holiday. As well as receiving an annual ‘retaining fee’ for being on call you will also be paid for attending fire calls, drill nights and training events. The roll of a retained firefighter is both rewarding, satisfying and at times challenging. There is a great deal of variety in what you’ll be asked to do, combined with the crucially important teamwork that the role brings. You’ll be part of a flexible work force that responds to your communities' needs 24/7. If you are interested in joining your local station and would like more information contact our website on www.norfolkfireservice. gov.uk or call 01603 810351and ask about any vacancies in the Retained Service alternatively contact the local Retained Support Officer on 07810127856.

Exhibition of new paintings. Our exhibition in February 2011, of work by Mike Webb – the creator of the ‘Mere Quacks’ cartoon in the Diss Express – was one of our most popular ever. We are delighted that he is back with a mixture of new paintings and original drawings of his recent and memorable cartoons. Mike’s subjects for his paintings are mostly of the fast disappearing

aspects of rural living that he grew up with. They include man-made constructions and machines, but usually not man himself. The viewer becomes the figure in the landscape. He does few portraits, but will include one of the late ‘Sheriff Bunny’ Patterson, a local character he featured in his Mere Quacks cartoons many times.

Evening viewing Wednesday 5th December 6-7.45pm. Come and meet Mike in person.

Christmas Gift Concert for Military Wives

Annual Mistletoe Market

Stradbroke & District Royal British Legion events.

Diss Methodist Church.

On the 1st December '12, we plan to hold a 'Christmas Gift Concert for Military Wives'. i.e. we envisage a very low admission price (enough to cover our costs), and will request the audience bring a wrapped Christmas Gift for a military wife, to place in our sleigh, for the branch to send to Wattisham base on behalf of the community. This token of appreciation will hopefully link community to forces, and let the wives know that they are valued, especially those whose husbands are away on deployment over Christmas. This whole idea has been embraced by Wattisham base, who have offered to send representatives and a few wives along to the concert. Details are still to be finalised, but I imagine

8

Your Local Magazine • November 2012

the start time will be quite early (possibly late matinee) as public seem reluctant to turn out on winter evenings in rural areas. Gislingham Silver band also believe in the cause and have given us a generous discounted price for the occasion. Festive music will be interspersed with readings and poems chosen carefully, which are relevant to the wives situation. (Father Christmas may show up). 20th April 2013, We plan to hold a repeat concert at the High School, similar to the Queens Birthday Concert held in April 2012, but this time our theme will be, England and St. George. Ipswich Ho s p i t a l band will play once again on this night.

Jean Goddard & Ann Moyse By the time you are reading this, members of Diss Methodist Church will be busy preparing for their Annual Mistletoe Market. This years event will be on Saturday 1st December, and will be opened at 10am by Radio Norfolk and Look East presenter David Whiteley. It is hoped that he will be accompanied by his wife Amelia Reynolds and daughter Annabelle. There will be a lovely variety of stalls selling all sorts of goodies; from Home Baking, Jams & Preserves, Gifts for the Home, Handicrafts, Books and Puzzles. There will also be a guess the weight

of the Christmas Pudding, and the ever popular “Surprise every time”. Tea/coffee and mince pies will be on sale during the morning cost £1. Lunches will be served, cost £4.00pp for 2 courses. This will consist of choice of homemade soup and rolls, choice of homemade pudding, finishing with tea or coffee. The Charities to benefit this year will be ‘The Goodwill Children’s Villages in India’. This is the main beneficiary who we have supported for many years. The other charities will be ‘Action for Children’ – The Methodist Churches own children’s charity, and the ‘Smile Train’ which helps pay for operations on children with cleft palette. ‘Save The Children’ will also have a stall. As this event will be on the same day as the Diss Christmas Light Switch On, come and do some early Christmas shopping at Diss Methodist Church and join in the fun.

Royal Anglian Regiment The

Freedom of the Town, Wednesday 7th November 2012 Foreword by Councillor Graham Minshull, Diss Town Mayor. On behalf of Diss Town Council, I consider it a great privilege to be able to award the honour of the Freedom of the Town to The Royal Anglian Regiment in recognition of its long association with the town and to experience the troops marching through the town centre streets of Diss with colours flying, drums beating and bayonets fixed.

It also provides an opportunity for the people of the town and district to show their support for the men and women who risk their lives in defence of our country, many of whom originate from the local area. The men and women who will march through the streets of Diss on this auspicious day for the town, will have recently returned from a six month tour of duty in Afghanistan. During this tour they have accomplished their objectives with great courage, perception,

dignity and professionalism. Sadly, this was not achieved without loss and during the tour, The Regiment was seen to pay the ultimate sacrifice and a number sustained serious injuries. This Freedom Parade will also be an occasion to pay tribute to and remember the many hundreds of Regimental servicemen before them who gave their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have today. I invite you all to join the Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, the High Sheriff of Norfolk, the Colonel of

The Regiment and I on this day to pay our respects to these brave men and women of The Royal Anglian Regiment, which has a long and illustrious history and a long association with Diss.

I Collect ....Colour Box Miniatures!

Colour Box Miniatures was created in 1983 by artist and sculptor Peter Fagan in the small Scottish boarder’s town of Lauder. Pieces are sculpted in plasticine, moulds taken, cast in resin and then hand painted giving each item a unique charm. The company produced a range of collections including animals, dogs, mice, gollys, cats in humorous situations and bears based on antique bears belong to Peter. I started collecting in 1988 whist on a family holiday in the

Lake District. I bought a couple of pieces featuring wildlife animals and thought nothing else of them until a couple of years later when I came across more including the different ranges that Colour Box were producing. It was at this point in 1991 that I started collecting the other ranges, mainly the cats and bears and when I also joined the collectors club. My collection steadily grew, buying pieces in gift shops whilst on holiday in Devon and receiving items at Christmas and Birthdays. Over the years Peter has made hundreds of pieces and often asked collectors for inspiration and I have been lucky enough to have several ideas sculpted by Peter and sold in retail

We need you! Are you a collector? Then we would like to hear from you! We need people to write about their collections in the magazine. Whatever you collect, we want to know; you can even write it anonymously if you like. Please ring 01379 642044, email gary@yourlocalmagzine.net or write to us at 3 Hales Yard, Diss, IP22 4AF.

outlets, including one piece that was only available for a limited time via Collect It Magazine. After 24 years of collecting I have amassed roughly 2000 pieces covering most of the collections, however I still don’t have every piece made and often scour eBay, charity shops, flea markets and car boots for those rare and elusive pieces needed to complete my collection – I live in hope! E v e n though Colour Box closed in 2000 Peter still sculpts, working on much smaller production runs of often no more than 50 pieces of any one item, meaning they are highly collectable and prized. I am very lucky to have some very rare and special pieces including limited editions, signed pieces and items that were only available to overseas collectors in the States and Australia. One of my most prized pieces in my collection is the Curio Shop which was given to me one Christmas by my parents and marked my 200th piece. The piece is based on a Curio Shop in Bruges where Peter bought his

first antique bears creating the inspiration for the bear collection. Another favourite piece is Galloping Horses, a one of one auction piece made for a special c o l l e c t o r ’s event in 2008

and features bears on a fairground attraction. I probably got a little carried away with my bidding but am pleased to have it standing pride of place in my display cabinet. Unfortunately I have a small house so can only display a small selection of pieces, the rest are boxed up, however hopefully soon I will have a larger property where I can have a dedicated Colour Box room. Opening up all the boxes will be like Christmas all over again – I can’t wait! My friends think I am a little bonkers and really don’t get my collecting habit, thankfully my husband is understanding. It’s a case of love me, love my collection as it’s something that I can never see giving up. Rachael Fretter.

Pretty Garage, Diss Looking for a garage you can trust? With over a century's experience, head to Pretty Garage in Diss.

If you know Diss, chances are you'll know the Pretty Garage on Vinces Road. For an impressive 115 years the Pretty family have been looking after the cars of the residents of Diss and the surrounding area. The business was founded in Scole by William Pretty in 1897 on the site of the current Scole Engineering. The motor trade was in its infancy and William Pretty was a real pioneer of his age inventing and making his own carburettors, spark plugs and gearboxes with reverse gears which were unheard of at this time. As you can see by the photo of the original garage and the copy of one of William's original invoices, he offered a wide range of services including work on oil engines,

He was also something of an entrepreneur setting up the first ever motorised postal service in Diss and also running a whalebone corset-making business in Heywood Road! Upon William's retirement, the business was taken over by his nephew Ronald (known as Tom) whose son John in turn took over the business in 1976. By now, the business had moved to Stuston Road in Diss before moving again to its current site on Vinces Road in 1999. Since it's birth, the business has gone from strength to strength and this year has seen one of the biggest expansions so far with the purchase of a large unit across the road from the existing premises. Christmas in Attleborough Christmas Carnival

Sunday 2nd December is the day of the Attleborough Christmas Carnival.

The event will start at 1pm and finish about 5pm. the main part of the afternoon is the switching on of the Christmas lights at 4.15pm. We have an array of craft stalls and fun fair rides with children's entertainers and of course everyone's favourite Father Christmas. Father Christmas will be arriving at 2pm on his sleigh and children will be able to visit him all afternoon. Larry Gray's fun fair will be about the town

24

with various rides for young toddlers to teenagers and adults. Craft stalls will be situated in the Church Hall, Town Hall and the Sports Centre. The committee would like to thank Donna Kissinger, Rosedales Funeral Home, Rory J Holbrook, R J Bartram & Son, Rose of India, Kerry Butcher accounting, Your Local Magazine, Elevation Entertainment and Nuts and Bolts for sponsoring and supporting this event. Without the continued support this event would not be able to take place. Last year over

6,000 people attended what has rapidly become one of Norfolks most spectaular christmas lights display. Chairperson Karen Pettitt said; "We are a very small committee and everyone works very hard to make this event a success but without the hard work of Geoff and Avril who arrange for the Christmas lights to be put up the Christmas lights wouldn't happen so the committee would like to thank them for all their help and hard work." Stalls are available at ÂŁ10 per table and anyone wishing

to book a stall can contact Karen Pettitt on 01953 455755.

Book Now For Christmas! The Inn on the Green in New Buckenham Celebrates its first anniversary.

We are celebrating the first year of trading for the Inn on the Green in New Buckenham and really hope that our customers have enjoyed their visits to us during the past twelve months. We intended to be further ahead with the opening of our ensuite rooms but despite setbacks we are now aiming to have at least 2 of them available by Easter next year. The Inn has now established itself as a major part of the village

34

and is happily used by the bridge club, the quiz team and the cricket team for meetings plus many local people call in for either a quick supper after work, a big family luncheon, a romantic meal for two or maybe just for Sunday breakfast with their newspaper (which also means there is no washing up afterwards!) Our menu is small but perfectly formed and constantly changing. The homemade pies and burgers, mature steaks and local lamb dishes are hugely popular but our chefs particularly enjoy

cooking fish and at the end of every month we have a special seafood weekend, offering the freshest fish, oysters and Brancaster mussels. At lunchtime the favourites have to be our cured meat platter, homemade soups or soft chunky sandwiches served with naughty fries or healthy salad at ÂŁ6.50. Sadly, the summer weather wasn't great this year but our customers made full use of every sunny opportunity to dine outside in the sheltered courtyard, planted with a mixture of scented roses, jasmine, clematis, hydrangeas and

vines which should all be blooming like mad by next spring! Of course the silly season is nearly upon us and although we are fully booked Xmas Day, we have a Xmas menu (pre-order only) from December 1st - 24th which is available online.

Looking for a meal fit for a king? Then head to the Park Hotel in Diss… Eve r yone k n o w s The Park Hotel in Diss. But has everyone sampled it's amazing food? If not, you're seriously missing out! We headed to the newlyrefurbished restaurant at the hotel to enjoy their three course evening dinner menu. At £19.95, it's good value for money but would it be as tasty as it sounded? The answer is a resounding yes! For starters, between us the five of us ordered Goats Cheese, spinach and caramelised red onion tartlet on fine leaf pesto and slow

roasted cherry tomato, Chicken Liver Pate blend with brandy and herbs served with fine leaf, plum and orange chutney and Melba Toast, homemade soup of the day topped with croutons and Salmon and Prawn Fishcake with sweet chilli and lemon grass mayonnaise. Each starter was beautifully presented and everyone reported that theirs tasted delicious. For main course we ordered Baked Salmon Supreme with Dijon Mustard, honey pecan and parsley crust on fine beans and new potatoes saute in garlic and cherry tomatoes, Chicken Curry served with poppadums and mango chutney and Pan-fried Pork

with fondant potato, whisky and cracked black pepper sauce and streaky bacon. It was all, without fail, mouth-wateringly yummy and the portion sizes were very large. Despite all feeling full, we couldn't leave without sampling the dessert menu. Again, we ordered a cross section of the menu, demolishing a gorgeous toffee and baileys cheesecake, creme brulee with homemade shortbread and meringue nest served with fresh strawberries, raspberries, whipped cream and red berry coulis. Like all that had gone before, each dessert was exquisite. With excellent service, a beautifully designed

restaurant and amazing food, it's fair to say dinner at the Park Hotel was a resounding success. Book now for Christmas - tables are going fast!

Weight is the burning issue... ...or is it fat?

When we decide we want to lose weight and start a new exercise regime are we really wanting to weigh less or fit into small clothes? Do we want to remove the pinchable fat from around our hips and abdomen or do we want to step on the scales, weigh less than last week but still wobble in the same places? Our body weight is made up of several components some of which are essential and you will never want to lose them so why not identify which component is which and lose the adipose tissue (fat mass), leaving you with healthy metabolic lean tissue, bone mineral density, organs and water (fat free mass). The term for being lean (toned) is down to having lower

subcutaneous levels of body fat which allow the skin to sit flush to the musculature underneath. By increasing the amount of lean tissue in your body this will help to burn the fat on top as lean tissue will help increase your metabolic rate making fat loss quicker and more sustainable. If you choose to lose weight through calorie restriction alone your body will use muscle protein as a source of energy which will give you weight loss on the scale but your body will still have the same amount of fat leaving you flabby and without shape. Why not create a deficit to burn excess calories by increasing the amount of exercise you do coupled with eating the recommended calories through

a healthy & balanced diet? By implementing frequent and regular physical exercise will not only help us to lose weight but also boost the immune system, and help prevent the "diseases of affluence" such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Exercise also improves mental health, helps prevent depression, and helps to promote or maintain positive selfesteem by improving one’s body image. If you want to find out more about your body composition and set realistic and healthy

goals for weight loss then contact us at Fit Club and start looking the way you want to look and dropping those inches. (fat)

Charli's House Destruction time!

Lots can happen in the first few weeks of a project, and when I say lots can happen, I mean lots of destruction! After many hours spent stripping four layers of wallpaper from each room, I watched Dave and Carl from House and Garden destroy parts of the bricks and mortar I just ploughed my savings into and I was a little bit scared. It's one of those moments where I was glad that I had listened to the builder and not tried to save a bit of money by doing it myself. There are too many times on all these tv shows

42

where you see someone taking a sledgehammer to the wall and not thinking about the consequences. The wall I removed to create my lovely open plan kitchen was a load bearing wall and the last thing I wanted was to pull down the house that I loved so much as well as the neighbours next door! So with the wall out, I began to see the space that I imagined and start thinking about which gorgeous kitchen I could fit (and afford) to put in. Cue many

evenings browsing magazines and the Internet for my perfect grey kitchen. You will discover that I have an absolute obsession with the colour grey and it will feature everywhere in this house! With the ridiculous amount of kitchen companies around, this can seem like a daunting task but break it down by budget, and think about what you really want. Is it integrated appliances, a range cooker, one of the boiling water taps, or all of the above? For someone who has

never lived on their own, it was quite a task for me to work out what was necessary and what was a dream, and at the time of writing this, I still can't make a decision which kitchen to go for! As well as all the exciting bits of progress in the kitchen, House

Tools thanks... It's a great help!

The Vine Church, Eye, would like to thank all those who brought in tools, sewing machines, cycles – even

a lawnmower as you can see – in aid of Tools With A Mission. They will all be refurbished (where necessary) and sent to African countries where they can be the means of helping people into work or even setting up their own businesses. One day they were given the unusual gift of a dentist's chair. Soon after, they received a request for... a dentist's chair!

and Garden have also managed to redo and insulate both of my roofs. With absolutely no insulation there before, I think I'll be pretty glad of this with the cold winter coming and the rising costs of energy! Next step on the decision path is the bathroom, this could take a while! One thing you have to remember when doing a project

TWAM began over 25yrs ago collecting tools for the poor, and you can find out more about their work via www.twam.co.uk Thank you again – the church also raised £261.69 from their harvest service in aid of the charity. mark@thevinechurch.co.uk

like this, be extremely kind to your neighbours! They are the ones putting up with all the banging whilst you're at work and the lack of parking outside their house due to extra large white vans and full to the brim skips. I think mine will be top of my Christmas list this year!

Introduction to Power Flushing... A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing rust, sludge and scale. The process involves pumping specialist chemicals around the heating system with the use of a power flushing pump, to loosen and mobilise unwanted debris. Each

44

radiator is individually flushed until clean and on completion, a central heating inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with all radiators left in place for the entire job. Wotcha!... 12.5 inches. That's how much rain I've measured to date since the hosepipe ban came into force in April. September was a lovely month, plenty of sunshine, until it spoilt its copybook with nearly an inch of rain over the 23rd/24th. Its also been the year of the slug – whatever the Chinese say. I've never had potatoes so decimated by them and am sometimes throwing whole potatoes away. I notice a few 'rogue' red ones have fared better, so maybe the basis for another experiment next year. I mentioned in the September KYHDB that a test to see if french marigolds kept carrot fly away from carrots had flopped because of the non-germination of most of the seed. However, those that did come up were free of the grub, so maybe an experiment to be continued. In the picture you see some of the 5,000 cloches we had at Hilldrop, Blo Norton. This time of year we would be sowing lettuce seed (cabbage and cos varieties) ready to plant out in Dec/Jan. This was our biggest cash crop of the season, harvested in April/May. This can be a depressing time of the year with the evenings drawing in, so get sowing and cheer yourself up! Broad beans and peas can also go in now. Keep on troshin' and remember, you can prune heathers, but don't forget to tell Heather what it is you are pruning! Mark Aiken. 07810 852089.

Ear Safety This Guy Fawkes Night

For a caring service

By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA, Audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre Ltd.

Trust All Hallows Homecare.

The days and nights around Fireworks Night are extremely hazardous to your ears. Fireworks can cost you your hearing. For the lucky ones, their hearing returns, but many must live with their hearing loss or tinnitus for the rest of their lives. Two thousandth of a second is all it takes for an exploding firecracker to put out the noise intensity to put your hearing at risk for life. • 1 in 10,000 people suffer permanent hearing damage because of fireworks • Young adults under the age of 25 are three times more likely than other groups to suffer fireworks related hearing damage

48

• Men are three times more at risk than women Take Precautions Use earplugs to protect your hearing. Simple off the shelf ear plugs would do the trick and for the little ones there are fantastic, inexpensive noise breaker headphones. For more information on protecting your hearing, hearing loss or to purchase ear plugs please visit www. hearingcarecentre.co.uk or call 0800 096 2637. *These conclusions were based on a study of hearing injuries related to fireworks celebrations in Germany, 2000.

A good intention that can tear a family apart! History is littered with good intentions that have caused disasters.

Here’s one that is happening right now, in this country, and will probably hit every single family in one way or another. It’s called the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) and because of this your bank accounts and financial assets will be frozen should you become “incapacitated”. Not even your spouse or next of kin can unlock them without Court authority, or if you are covered by a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). The MCA was undoubtedly a good intention designed to protect the “incapacitated” but

it is incredibly complicated and much of the public knows little or nothing about it! Result: one family after another are being caught unawares, and ending up with a very expensive problem on their hands. Did the creators of the MCA ever stop and think just how you are supposed to take care of a sick spouse, or parent, AND deal with banks, solicitors plus the Court of Protection (CoP), whilst bank accounts etc are frozen to you??? But that’s exactly what happens without any exaggeration whatsoever. Even among those that are now aware of Incapacity and LPAs etc, there are some frightening misconceptions, such as banks don’t freeze joint accounts. FACT: The law applies to any asset that has the incapacitated person’s name on it which includes joint accounts.

But probably the biggest myth is that incapacity is all about old age. Of course the elderly are more prone to heart attacks, strokes and of course dementia. But these can and do strike at any age, and anyone can have an accident! If it is the elderly, your mum, dad, your grandparents who are most affected, who do you think will bear the financial brunt when their accounts are frozen? Who will have to help fund applications to the CoP, and pay the bills that can no longer be paid? Yep, you’ve got it …the sons and daughters. Makes you stop and think who an LPA helps most doesn’t it?? It’s not all doom and gloom. Sometime back I created a low cost programme to help the elderly get their LPAs at a fraction of the solicitor prices, and without having to leave their home. This became so successful that I joined up with other professionals and

we created Beauwater Estate Planning & Services so we could help even more pensioners. It working so well, we can now offer LPAs at an even lower price! For a free LPA information pack call 01953 451930.

When people go shopping in Diss... They will notice the white eras ltd building in Denmark Street but what goes on there? In fact, people are what eras is all about: assessing them, training and coaching them, developing them and even finding out what they think. A recent extensive study of the culture and values of companies in East Anglia was co-designed by eras. You might have completed one of their ‘psychometric’ tests (the term simply means assessing human behaviour under standard conditions) when applying for a job, or their famous personality questionnaire The Quest Profiler. It is used by organisations large and small, all over the UK. When it comes to training and coaching, it is one of the most respected centres in the region, its staff comprising psychologists, human resources specialists, those accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management and other people experts. Becoming

better leaders, communicators or interviewers is all part of what eras offers, either at its own offices or at those of its clients. People can also learn to use tests and questionnaires to recruit and develop their own staff and join the British Psychological Society’s Register of Test Users – even those with no previous psychological background. Getting the right people into the right jobs is what it’s all about – and then developing them to be the very best at those jobs. Not for nothing has the eras company motto ‘Expertise at Work’ defined one of the most prominent employers in Diss. With so much change going on in all sorts of workplaces at the moment, it’s likely that eras will continue to be as much part of Diss as the ducks on the Mere.
