Diss Town Council News

Many of you will have noticed the new flag pole in Diss Park which is proudly flying the Green Flag Award 2012/13. The Green Flag Award was set up in 1996 and since that time it has become the benchmark of excellence for a diverse range of green spaces in the UK. It not only recognises public parks but also other open spaces such as nature reserves, ecology sites and cemeteries and even Buckingham Palace Gardens have been given the award, so Diss is in very good company. Achieving Green Flag status for the Park has been an aspiration of the Town Council for a number of years and a great deal of work has been involved to bring it up to the high standard required. An exciting new play equipment

scheme was created in 2006 and this year a new roundabout and replacement swings have been installed. Information Boards have been placed around the Mere and behind the scenes the Town Council has developed a Park Management Plan which will ensure that the Park continues to be maintained to a high standard now and for future generations. The flag was raised by Town Clerk Deborah Sarson and Maintenance Manager Robert Ludkin at a ceremony on 17th July to celebrate the Town Council’s success in gaining the award at the first attempt. The Town Mayor said that the success had been due to a team effort by staff, Councillors and partner organisations including the Safer Neighbourhood Team. The Council will have to reapply every year to retain the Green Flag and show that recommendations for improvements by the judges have been put in place, so the work continues. We are also pleased to report that the fountain is now back in the Mere having had to be removed earlier in the summer for essential repairs and it's good to see it working again and taking pride of place in the beautiful Mere.

Attleborough Town Council News Local Planning for Gypsy and Traveller Provision The Attleborough and Snetterton Heath Area Action Plan (ASHAAP) includes reference to the provision of possible further official gypsy and traveller facilities in the locality. A public meeting called by residents and held recently at Connaught Hall heard that a possible site on West Carr Road was being evaluated for gypsy and traveller provision. Whilst this site remains just one of a number of possible sites, the Council is looking to ascertain whether a public meeting with attendance from all appropriate authorities and agencies ought to be held to fully discuss the proposals and invites the views of residents accordingly. Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Eddie Wright has been elected Deputy Town Mayor for the remainder of the 2012/13 municipal year. Mr Wright replaces Shane Schucroft who stepped down as Deputy Mayor and as a town councillor in July.

Community Award The Town Mayor, Sam Taylor, presented a Community Award to Mr Bob Elkes at the July Town Council meeting in recognition of his many years of sterling service to the community. Code of Conduct The Town Council adopted a new Code of Conduct in July, following changes to the law. All Town Councillors have provided declarations of pecuniary interests and these will be available to view through a link provided on the Council’s website. Mayoral Engagements The Mayor, Cllr Sam Taylor, had a fairly full schedule of engagements in July, the highlights being the Mayoral Civic Service held at St Mary’s Church and being made a member of the Lions. Mrs Taylor stated ”I also enjoyed attending Holly Court’s 40th Anniversary and the Boxing Club’s award evening when it was wonderful to see the dedication and hard work of all the young members being rewarded”.

Diss Picture House I have a recurring dream that Diss Picture House is open again. Even in my sleep I know that this is not possible because it closed for good on March 3rd 1973. I was there that night to see a film about Darwin, called The Voyage of the Beagle, and Robert Redford and George Segal in How to Steal a Diamond in Four Uneasy Lessons (known in the USA and on TV as The Hot Rock). When Redford sauntered off with the diamond at the end it was the close of an era for me. In 1965 I went 50 times. Life was simpler in those days. Anyone who went to see films knew that the height of ambition, the goal of life, was to get the girl and a recording contract. My younger brother and I must have seen Zulu 10 times over the years and could probably supply the dialogue if the sound was turned down. I realise now that it was not an accurate representation of Victorian times; but it was the best British action film of them all. In the 1950s we used to go on Saturday mornings. Old cinemas have a distinctive smell which still excites me. Jack Jones, the proprietor, would be there in his cap and our tickets would be taken by a girl who sometimes wore a cowboy hat. We cheered the heroes, booed the bad ‘uns and heard the sound of rolling Coke bottles and cries of “Put a shillin’ in the meter!” when the projector broke down. I can remember our bewilderment when Hopalong Cassidy kissed a girl. “Why did Hoppy do that?”

Bressingham Primary School’s Headmaster Mr. King served end of term treats to his Year Six pupils on their last day of term. “They’ve worked really hard to achieve our best ever SAT results,” he commented. “And when they requested ice-creams to celebrate I was happy to oblige.” The children will continue their education locally, either at Diss High or Hartismere High, however their memories of

we wondered aloud as we walked home. The town’s first cinema was built in 1916 and rebuilt in 1934, the first film in the new building being the talkie Greensleeves, with Jessie Matthews. I remember the queues to see Cliff Richard in The Young Ones. A dozen years later the place closed because nobody was going. Films are not the same on television. There is something special about a large, hushed audience watching a film in a cinema. Certainly horror films lose much of their impact. I had a sleepless night, at the age of 17, after seeing The Reptile. When I saw it again on television I wondered what had bothered me. I wish the picture house was open again. As we came out, brother Simon would say, “Good, wa’n’t it”. When we got home my mother would say, “Was it good? Many there?” Poignant moments from films stick in my mind: the Borstal boys singing Jerusalem in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner; the moment at the end of The Great Escape when the guard turns, touched by the sound of Steve McQueen’s baseball taptapping against the ‘cooler’ wall; the ‘freeze’ on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as they fall to three volleys by half the Bolivian army. Could we? Should we? Breckland residents’ budget consultation. Local Authorities throughout the country are facing difficult financial circumstances, and extremely difficult decisions. Breckland’s settlement from central government, which makes up about 70% of our funding, will reduce by 29% by 2015. We have no option but to review all the services we currently provide and have looked at every potential cost-saving and revenue raising opportunity; to see if things could be done differently or possibly not at all. By mid September, we will have identified a number of measures we could adopt over the next five years that would meet the funding shortfall. We are holding a series of public meetings, one in each market town, to explain these measures to our residents and businesses and to get their views as to how we should make the savings needed. Which services do local people value most and think we should retain, and which are less important to them? Change is inevitable. We cannot continue to deliver services as we do now, but we want to make sure that the

views of local people are taken into account when we re-shape the council and its role in Breckland. The Catholic parish of the Most Holy Trinity, Diss on the Norfolk-Suffolk border is celebrating the opening of its new church. Dedicated to one of the 40 English Martyrs, the church of St Henry Morse is delighting parishioners who have been following its progress since building work began last November. The new church was designed by Framlingham architects Hollins, and building contractor was Blackburns of Harleston. “Our parish has been on a journey and it's very satisfying to be arriving at our destination,” said Father Simon. “I'm looking forward very much to celebrating our first masses here in this building that has surpassed my expectations in its noble simplicity.” The church of St Henry Morse replaces an older building in the town which was home to the parish for nearly 60 years, and whose sale, along with a loan from the diocese of East Anglia, provided the £1 million for the project. A large stained-glass window, baptismal font and Stations of the Cross from the old church are being used again. The altar stone is from the Carmelite convent at Langham in north Norfolk, while the figure of Jesus on the cross comes from RAF Marham and has been restored by parishioner Tony

Tanousis. Four stained-glass windows from Stowmarket's Catholic church have been restored by local artist Terri Lockton, and local craftsman and parishioner Peter Dunsmore has designed and built a series of oak benches to seat the congregation. “The late Bishop Michael Evans foresaw that a growing population in this area, together with the possibility that priests would need to say Sunday masses in other parishes as well as their own, meant we would need larger churches to bring parishioners together at any one mass,” said Father Simon. “We have implemented his vision.”

Olympic Fever Continuing our serialisation of historical editions of the Diss Express (supplied by the Rackham family), we look at how the paper covered London's first Olympic Games in 1908â&#x20AC;Ś Opening Ceremony 'The King declared the Olympic Games of London open in the Great Stadium at Shepherd's Bush on Monday. The ceremony took place in the presence of about forty thousand spectators. It was the occasion for the most picturesque and memorable pageant of athletic sport that has ever been seen in this country.' The Cycle Race 'Another interesting event was provided by the cycle race of 20 kilometres (12.427 miles) in which there were six heats. Some beautiful racing was done by L. Meredith, of Great Britain, in the first heat. In the fifth heat there was an exciting incident when Texier, a French cyclist, was thrown over the wheels of Santorinaios, of Greece. The latter seemed to be hurt, and fell

out of the race, and Texier picked himself up and went on. 1,500 metres The most exciting event of the afternoon was the 1,500 metres flat race, being the final heat of those run on Monday. There was a general feeling that the contest lay between Hallows and Wilson, both Britishers. However, Sheppard, one of the American representatives, came through at the finish with a magnificent spurt and won. The Marathon Race The Marathon Race was won on Friday by an American J.J. Hayes, on the course from Windsor Castle to the Stadium. Never before has a contest been carried out in the presence of such an enormous concourse. The Stadium was filled with a vast audience of 100,000.

After Italian athlete Dorando collapsed and was helped by friends before going on to win, a protest was lodged. The protest was upheld and the win given to JJ Hayes. 'Thus the honour of the

greatest victory in the whole Olympic Games went to the United States. The Queen, who witnessed the finish, graciously determined to give a special cup to Dorando.

A New President... Rotary Club of Diss & District. The outgoing president of Diss & District Rotary Club, Simon Noble, installed the new president Keith Day. Keith has already shown that he has a great enthusiasm for Rotary and an energy level to match. He and his wife, Vicci, are well known throughout the area and they can doubtlessly expect keen support from all angles of the community and the club itself, of course.

Was founded in 1995 as a partnership between people and animals, and is now one of the largest animal welfare organisations in the country. Our aims are to relieve the suffering of animals of any species in need of

care and attention and to provide facilities for their reception and care. PACT not only helps animals to a new and better life but our animals also help people who come to the Sanctuary to benefit from interacting with our rescued animals in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. People of all ages and backgrounds, whether suffering from physical or emotional problems and those with learning difficulties, can gain or regain confidence and self-respect. called Eric and Ernie, two neutered males who are seeking a caring home where they can remain together for life. They came to the Sanctuary when PACT were called by a local hospital concerned that a patient had told them that he had some rabbits that had not been fed or watered since his emergency admission. When we investigated there were over seventy rabbits,

many of whom were pregnant, living in old filing cabinets in a disgustingly filthy rat infested shed. The rabbits were suffering from a variety of diseases but with intensive care almost all of the bunnies survived and most of them have found loving new homes, but there are still a few like Eric and Ernie waiting for that special person to give them a second chance.

Then why not pop to the Attleborough Tourist Information Centreâ&#x20AC;Ś. You might be surprised to know just how many leaflets about local and regional attractions, events and places of interest in Norfolk and Suffolk we hold in the Attleborough Tourist Information Centre. So, if you're planning a day out, come in to see us. The Tourist Information Centre is on the ground floor of the Town Hall and is open daily from 10am - 2pm except Wednesdays and Fridays when it closes at 12noon. It is staffed entirely by volunteers who are only too happy to help with your queries. Included in our comprehensive stock of leaflets is information promoting Attleborough and the

surrounding villages with maps, local guidebooks and magazines. We have a wide range of activities for both the young and those in their prime varying from museums, churches, National Trust properties, walks and cycle routes, animal parks, theme park etc. If you're looking further afield we have a few brochures pertaining to some major cities and other counties. There are also many brochures for coach excursions and a variety of bus and train timetables. Although we have knowledge of local accommodation, particularly bed and breakfast, and are happy to point you in the right direction, we are unable to make any bookings.

If you're interested in the arts and entertainment we can provide leaflets on theatre productions and concerts in and around Norfolk, although again we do not book tickets. We have an events book and noticeboard and are happy to display posters advertising any of your forthcoming activities. We also sell merchandise such as fridge magnets and key rings alongside postcards and greetings cards depicting photographs of Attleborough and, in the future, we hope to sell maps of Norfolk. Did you know that Attleborough has its own Community Car Scheme for those

who do not have access to a car or where there is no suitable public transport to enable them to attend medical appointments. Bookings for a community car to the Doctors surgeries, dentist, optician, Norfolk and Norwich Hospital etc can be made through the Tourist Information Centre on 01953 456930. It is helpful if you can give as much notice as possible as we have a limited number of drivers but we will try to accommodate in an emergency. You will need to pay but at a subsidised rate which varies depending on where you're going. So why not pop in to see us, you will be amazed at the information we can provide.

I Collect handbags! ... You cannot leave the house without one!

Gucci Your handbag must hold the entire contents of the house even if you’re just popping down the road and I regard them as my gadget of choice as after all I can never get near the remote control! Vary rarely can you find the object or item you’re looking for (I say looking for, but I really mean feeling for, you never really look in your handbag unless it’s taken you over five minutes to locate the phone, lipstick, keys - the list is endless) without emptying everything out. I have always admired handbags, but I do wonder if any other women are like me in thinking that if my bag does not weigh the same as a small child, it must be empty? My earliest memories of my gravitation to handbags came from my admiration of the smartlydressed women I watched go by

as I played as a child outside my home. I wished that the only bag I owned was not a huge ugly brown heavy satchel containing my homework, but something much more glamorous… By the mid-seventies my older sister Elaine was a working teen with an eye for fashion and bought many lovely bags with one that clings to the memory in the style of a rolled-up magazine, oh - the wonderment I had with that one!! As soon as I started work I put a small amount by each week until I had enough to purchase a black strappy handbag, I was now officially a grown up, if anybody had checked the contents it would have been plain to see that it was stuffed full of sweets, chewing gum and a rolled up copy of Jackie, so having a bag did not make me an adult!!! Over the years I have bought bags for all sorts of reasons, a

memorable purchase came during a stressful time whilst moving house, The Impulse Panic Buy!!! Gallivanting off, mincing down to Bond Street, for some much needed retail therapy, I found myself rushing into Fendi, where I bought the first bag to hand. On reflection back home I realised that this bag was neither practical or elegant so, wrestling with the price tag and my conscience, I wearily wandered back the next day. The shop assistant was most helpful and she exchanged it for a far more sensible and thought-out option which I still have to this day.

Fendi The birth of my son witnessed the “Baby Bag Years” where not only did a bag have to contain my world but also that of my infant son’s! For years I could pull out baby wipes, nappies, toys and a full set of clean clothes from a lovely Prada handbag. Even though all I really needed was a debit card to pay for the shopping.

My favourite handbag is my much treasured Mulberry Bayswater handbag in a natural colour which was purchased as

Mulberry a surprise present by my partner James. The joy and wonderment of this bag is apparent with every outing. With age and usage the leather gets softer and the odd mark here and there gives it character, it’s even roomy enough so I can even feel for my reading glasses and headache tablets (how the necessities have changed) without the big turf-out. I have several that I have purchased for special occasions such as the brightly coloured Vivian Westwood bag; it was the musthave to accompany the matching shoes and lovely dress I was wearing. The handbag has to my shame been waiting patiently for its next outing... As I have never worn the dress or shoes again, Ah Shoes!! Now there’s another passion...

Out & About Flying high at Old Buckenham Taking to the skies in a vintage Boeing P-17 Stearman Biplane, courtesy of Old Buckenham Aerodrome.

When I was given the opportunity to go up in the skies in an old vintage WWII Boeing P-17 Stearman Biplane I just couldn’t resist. The thought of flying in an open cockpit at 500 feet with the wind rushing past was a childhood dream come true. Upon arriving and looking around this glorious 1941 flying machine, with its 7 cylinder 220hp radial engine up front and its beautifully hand-carved Canadian Birch propeller, I was blown away by its sheer magnificence and could not wait to get airborne. I was introduced to Gerry Honey, Chief Flying Instructor who talked me through all the safety procedures and where we would be flying. Also if I was ok, he would perform some aerobatics, which consisted of wing overs, loop the loop and then going straight in to a stall turn, and I would feel the effects of approximately 3.5G - with that I couldn’t wait to get in the sky! With flying hat and goggles on and the engine fired up, we began to gently roll down towards the runway. Before I knew it we were up in the air, gliding gracefully – at about 60-80 knotts at 550 feet.

We headed towards Attleborough then continued to Great Ellingham where Gerry banked the plane to 90 degrees and pulled hard back on the stick to create a very tight turn to head towards Banham. Once levelled out, it was my turn to take over at the controls! Very hesitantly I slightly moved the stick to the left and the craft responded smoothly, then I straightened up and pulled back to get my horizon levelled up and made a few more turns, and hey I was flying… but I was glad when Gerry said he was taking back command of the plane!... With all this excitement I forgot about the aerobatics… Gerry raised the altitude to 1,500 feet and proceeded to do a few wing turns, followed by a loop the loop and straight in to a stall turn… all I can describe is seeing the horizon one moment then seeing nothing but sky then the exhilaration of seeing the ground and experiencing the G force as the plane pulled back up until we were pointing vertically upwards again. Then the aircraft slowed until it was hanging in the sky and a gentle touch on the rudder brought its nose round into

a vertical dive. Gerry, of course, always had complete control and once again we levelled out. At this point the adrenaline was pouring through my veins and for those who are wondering if I used the sick bag… no I didn’t - although I was glad I didn’t eat anything before I went up! After the aerobatics, Gerry flew back to Old Buckenham Aerodrome to land. Once we taxied to our final position and the engine was turned off it was time to get out, and I remember I wanted to do

it all again! I can honestly say that was the best experience I’ve ever had and all I can say is “Wow what a breath-taking experience – totally awesome!” I would recommend this to everyone. The friendliness of all the staff at Old Buckenham Aerodrome, safety and control of the plane was second to none, and to Gerry Honey, who I had complete faith in. This would make an amazing gift, or even if you would like to experience a piece of history go on and book your trial flight, it’s absolutely out of this world. By Matt Bignell.

It seems fish and chips have come a long way in the last few years! Long gone is the lingering smell of grease and dinners wrapped tightly in sheets of newspaper. At least that's true if Market

Place Fish & Chip Shop and Restaurant, located on the MarketPlace - as the name would have you believe - in Diss is anything to go by. Four members of the Your Local team headed in for lunch one Tuesday and were very impressed with the spotlessly clean restaurant and the welcoming and friendly staff. Someone commented that it felt much more like a proper restaurant with sturdy tables and chairs than a typical fish and chip

restaurant and we all agreed. The menu was varied and - most importantly - very good value for money. One ordered cod and chips, another went for plaice and chips and the other two went for the scampi. When the food arrived, the portions were all extremely generous and well-presented. As we tucked in, we discovered that the food was really tasty - just as good as it looked! Even the extras such as onion rings and curry sauce were declared to be

delicious. The all-important chips were really good too, in fact we couldn't fault the meal at all. Despite the huge portions, two staff decided to go for desserts too both of which were amazing. The chocolate fudge cake was huge and delicious as was the honeycomb and chocolate ice cream sundae. All in all, the whole experience was fantastic. Everyone agreed it was great value for money and decided a return trip was necessary as soon as possible!

Green Tomato Chutney Ingredients: 2Â˝ kg green tomatoes 500g onions 1 rounded tbsp salt 500g sultanas 500g cooking apples 500g light muscovado sugar 1.14 litre jar spiced pickling vinegar Method: Slice the green tomatoes (you can skin them if you want, but I don't usually bother). Next finely chop all of the onions and layer the tomatoes & onions in a large mixing bowl and sprinkle with salt and leave for at least 1 hour Chop up the sultanas using a sharp knife, then peel, core and chop up all of the apples. Place the sugar and vinegar into a large saucepan and bring to the boil, stir the mixture so all the sugar dissolves. Add the sultanas to the apples and simmer for about 10 mins. Strain the tomatoes and onions in a colan der (but don't rinse), then transfer the mixture into the sauce pan and return to the boil. Simmer for about 1hr, stirring occasionally until the mixture is thick and pulpy.

Colour choice? When redecorating your home choosing colours can be quite a challenge, with so many decisions to be made especially if you are investing in new furniture and furnishings. If you have recently moved to the property I would always advise that you spend a couple of months getting used to the feel of the space and how you actually use the rooms before making any major decisions- most of our clients who are looking to do their first complete refurbishment of a room have lived in their home for 10 years + ! When it comes to colour we all have our likes and dislikes but where do we go from there? For me the starting point of any room is the view from the window. If there are a lot of windows overlooking a beautiful garden or courtyard, look at the colours of the flowers.

The natural partner for flower inspired colours such as fuchsia, Lilac and rose is green, a colour that can be relaxing or refreshing depending on the shade that you choose. Trees and plants are a constantly changing with the season so don’t feel restricted to the summer shades. As we move into autumn you will see the leaves turn copper and this might be the time that you are inspired! Very few of us are lucky enough to have every room overlooking a beautiful garden but where we do I think it’s lovely to bring those colours inside to be enjoyed all year round.

Keep Yer Heel Down Bor! Wotcha!... The question is often asked, “where were you?” on an important date in the world's calendar. I'm going to ask where were you on Monday 6th August at 5pm? That was when we had almost an inch of rain in 3hrs. I hope you weren't cycling home from work! It was an amazing storm – I stood at the kitchen window and literally watched the rain gauge fill up. Thankfully we've had a bit of summer since then, especially on Saturday 18th Aug. when temperatures soared to 30C+ (86F). Always experiment in gardening. I started three experiments this year – one I told you about last month – discovering that, yes, smaller seeds do produce less yield. The second experiment was a complete flop – namely trying to discover whether french marigolds keep carrot fly from destroying your carrots (as I've always doubted it). This might have been a success had any carrots germinated! But for some reason, despite being sown in absolutely perfect conditions they didn't. Ho-hum. And the third experiment? Everyone knows you can't compost weeds – the seeds will live on in the compost and then germinate when you put the compost back on your garden – but what you can do is make a compost heap of weeds only. Make the weeds work for you! Above you can see butternut squashes healthily growing from a compost heap of weeds. You will need to cover the composted weeds with black plastic to prevent the weeds from growing, then makes holes for your plants. Keep on a troshin' and remember, a bulb is a potential flower buried in autumn never to be seen again! Mark Aiken.

Tools wanted... The Vine Church, Eye are appealing for old (or new!) tools for their Harvest Celebration on Sunday 9th September at 10.30am. This is because the charity they will be supporting is Tools With A Mission (TWAM). With headquarters at Ipswich, TWAM are very much locally based and for over 25 years have been collecting and refurbishing tools and sending them overseas. I don’t think so, nor do most of my friends. Do I look any different than you do? No. Do I feel emotions any differently to you? No. Have you guessed who I am yet? No? I will tell you. I was the person sitting next to you who did not own a computer, nor know how to use one. Shocked? Some people are, they think I’m very strange. There are many ways that I could have reached this point in my life with this problem. Mine was quite easy, computers just seemed to pass by me. My family didn’t have one, so I didn’t have one. They didn’t need to use one, so they didn’t. My life is more complicated, I did need to know how to use one, but I couldn’t. It was made worse by the attitude of some people who are lucky enough to know how to use one. As I tried to learn, they laughed, they called me ‘stupid’ or ‘slow’, making fun of what was basically just a lack of knowledge. Even they had to start somewhere! And it hurts to be treated like a fool when I know I am not. I wanted to be like you! But perhaps with a bit more sympathy for those like me. So what did I do about it? How could I learn this difficult art of computing?

First, I had to overcome my fear of ridicule. I didn’t deserve it, and it was not helping. I can learn just as much as you can, I just need the right tuition and conditions in which to learn. Someone sympathetic to my plight, with patience and empathy. And were there any of these teachers around, and if so where did I find one? I found one in the local Library. It used to be just books, but now they have computers you can use free, and someone to show you how to use them. There are other places too, just ask in your local Information Centre, they’ll know. I’m like you now. I will soon know as much as you, but I will help others who were like me, so we can all join in the electronic life. Remember, you can find those who will share their knowledge and skills sympathetically, I did! Gary Streeter There are some aspects about Wills, Powers of Attorney and estate planning generally that are routinely accepted as fact, but are either not true all, or are different to what we perceive them to be. But alas no one bothers to put us right, and so we blithely carry on making important, possibly life changing decisions, based on duff information! Here is one very good example: Most couples own their homes as joint tenants thinking

this to be the best option (and only option?) because no one bothered to explain things to them. Wherein In fact it’s usually more beneficial to be tenants in common; and if more home-owners had known this then fewer homes would have been lost to nursing care fees! A newer development concerns the decision making of about health treatments for adults who are unable to make or indicate their own wishes. Despite popular belief the medical authorities have no need to heed the wishes of the family/spouse or next of kin. The final decision rests completely with the medical team unless the adult patient has a Lasting Power of Attorney (welfare) or an Advance Directive (Living Will) in place. Families can, and do disagree about someone else’s medical treatment. Therefore the medical team will examine all other evidence to help them determine

what the patient’s own wishes would have been. For this reason the presence or absence of Lasting Powers of Attorney are now being seen as a good indicator of the patient’s wishes. No LPAs of any kind gives a strong message that the patient doesn’t want his/her family to make any decisions on their behalf, financial or medical. An LPA (property) only, and you want your family to make financial decisions for you, but not medical ones! All of which may be the complete opposite to your true wishes. An LPA (property) is an incredibly useful document and can save a family from a massive financial headache. However it now appears that by not arranging an LPA you are potentially misleading your medical team (and possibly the courts) about who you prefer to make medical decisions for you! We want everyone to have the protection of BOTH types

of LPA, and so our LPA price is competitive and a second LPA even lower. Having both LPAS is the only way to ensure ALL your decision making will be in the hands of someone you trust rather than the state! Incapacity can strike without warning. Over the last 4 weeks the Jobs Club has welcomed 12 new jobseekers and has seen an average of 17 members attend the coffee morning each week.

Learn Karate ‘Richard Vince began teaching Karate in Diss, at the Youth Centre, in 1979. The classes thrived and he soon expanded to Harleston in 1980. These two classes are the root of what has now become ‘The Black Belt Academy’ which has a permanent, full time headquarters in Norwich. Diss classes are taught by Richard’s son Tom who has been involved in Martial Arts since the age of 3. Tom has helped develop the ‘Little Dragons’ programme for

3 to 6 year olds which is thriving in both Diss and Harleston. Karate is a great tool to build self esteem & confidence, as well as being a fantastic family activity. Beginners classes are forming now for adults, children & families. Go along to 2 classes free of charge to find out if you enjoy Karate. It could be the best thing you ever did!’

Summer Success The Jobs Club team have been very busy during the summer months helping their members find employment and offering additional support in order to aid this process. They have helped 9 members create a new CV to send out to potential employers and 11 members have received professional 1:1 support from a Careers Advisor. They have also held a ‘Start your own Business’ workshop which was very well attended and they are looking to hold more of these workshops in the future. Finally, they would like to offer congratulations to 9 of their members who have found permanent employment and wish them every success.

What was there before?

A Brief History of the Yard... Wills Yard has been the home for many businesses over the years but this photograph taken in the 80's shows the businesses that were operating from the yard then. Discount Bed Centre was in the main building, Andyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aerials was where the cardboard store used to be. Diss Lawn Mowers and Michael Wilby Carpenter on the left hand side. At the turn of the century, the yard now known as Wills Yard in Chapel Street was the Diss Fire station. The main building was where the fire carts were kept, and the horses that were used to pull the carts were kept in the stables that used to be the

right hand side of the yard. It must have been quite a performance for the fire officers to harness up the horses as fast as possible to reach the fire. The yard was then eventually owned by the local council, who used it as a building yard. In the late 50s it was put on the market and purchased by Mr G.A.M. Wills, who used the double storey main building in the yard as a new and second-hand furniture shop, beyond the front showroom to the right was the office and new mattress department, which had a very small coal fire which was the only form of heating in the whole building.

This was in the days before ebay, and flat pack furniture was in its infancy, so the furniture of the day was good, solid, war time utility stuff. He bought the furniture either from local people who were clearing out or from his once a week trips to London, where he bought at the auctions. All the prices were open to bargaining and he would deliver for no further cost. Before the extension of the building at the front of the car park which is now Sundown Guitars, three of Semmences Coaches would bus people into the town and park up there every Friday. What is now Orchard Frames was the lino

department and where Rushall Dolls House shop now reside, was previously a store for China and Glass hire. The main building is now home to the recently expanded Diss Furnishing Fabrics Jeff and Liz having moved from next door where the Rushall Dolls House shop is now. Over in the opposite corner used to be the paper and cardboard store. Mr Wills, or Gammy as he was called, was really ahead of his time, as he used to collect all the old newspapers and cardboard boxes from around the town flatten, tie up and store until he had enough to fill a lorry and then it would go for recycling.

Orchard Frames has been trading in Wills Yard since 1993, and current owners Mark and his wife Stacey are happy to spend time with each customer to find frames to suit a piece of art, either with a stock frame made on the premises or produce bespoke frames to suit customer requirements. Previous customers have wanted everything from clothing and swordfish bills to fossils framed. The shop has 450 different mouldings in stock and 80 colours of conservation mountboard. Orchard Frames offers a dry mounting service for commercial prints, posters and non-gloss

photography which keeps the work flat and greatly improves presentation in the frame. Dry mounting can improve the appearance of creased and crumpled art work, but the remedial aspect of this process does have limitations. Because this is the home of the Diss Chapter of the BNI. The BNI - Business Network International - was formed 26 years ago. Around the world there are now 6,866 chapters and 139, 971 members. Each chapter allows only one person from each trade or profession to join. The way that it works is that all members carry copies of each of their fellow members cards with them. When they meet someone new that could use a fellow member's products or services, they hand over their card and personally recommend them. It's like having dozens of sales people working for you! 'In the UK and Ireland alone, there are 611 BNI Chapters that in 2011 gave 670,222 referrals, leading to business worth £269 million.'

Dan Kelly, Managing Area Director, BNI Norfolk explains how the BNI works and the benefits of membership. 'The BNI is an organisation that exists primarily to help its members find good quality business leads through a structured word of mouth program. The principle that all members operate by is ‘Givers Gain’ – in other words they recognise that if they help find members business it is highly likely members will help them find business in return.' So how does someone become a member? 'To take part in the BNI referral system program the first thing to do is to visit a chapter,' explains Dan Kelly. 'It is very important for potential members to understand exactly how a BNI chapter works and what is involved in order that they can make an informed decision as to whether to apply for membership or not. They will be warmly welcomed and have every aspect explained.'
