Flying a local “Flog It!” Flag
News.
Diss in the spotlight.
Diss Town Council’s Highways Committee often receives complaints regarding problems caused by on-street parking in various locations around the town. However if there are no parking restrictions, ie yellow lines, in place no action can be taken by South Norfolk Council’s Civil Enforcement Officers who are now responsible for the enforcement of on-street parking restrictions. Examples of this could be where vehicles are parked on very narrow roads causing hold ups in the flow of traffic or close to junctions. Requests for new parking restrictions are dealt with by Norfolk County Council which has to put in place a legal Traffic Regulation Order before new restrictions become enforceable. This is a lengthy process taking up to two years and costs in the
region of £2,000. The length of time it takes and the cost are the same regardless of however many changes to the existing Traffic Order are required so it makes sense to submit all suggestions for new parking restrictions for Diss in one go. A working group has been set up by the Highways Committee to gather information on the changes needed and they would like to hear from anyone who knows of particular areas which would benefit from the new parking restrictions or indeed the removal of existing yellow lines which are no longer appropriate. “Flog It!” presenter Paul Martin with TW Gaze Auctioneer and “Flog It!” expert Elizabeth Talbot It was “Lights! Camera! Action!” at the Diss Auction Rooms of TW Gaze on Friday 5th April as the BBC were welcomed back for a return visit from “Flog It!” Presenter Paul Martin is no stranger to the firm; he has brought the popular antiques programme to Diss many times over the last 11 years and makes no secret of enjoying these trips to East Anglia. Ickworth House at Bury St Edmund’s had hosted the “Flog It!” valuation day three weeks earlier and members of the public had taken along treasures and prized possessions for assessment with the possibility of being chosen for inclusion in the filming and subsequent auction. The BBC reported a very strong attendance in terms of numbers of people and
a good selection of interesting and high-quality items shown to the valuers. Five programmes were filmed for the new series and three experts were involved, namely Philip Serrell, Adam Partridge and Will Axon. They were on hand to host the participants at the auction and share the thrills and spills of watching their items being offered for sale. TW Gaze’s own “Flog It!” expert Elizabeth Talbot was on the rostrum as auctioneer and she sold to a large audience of excited bidders, “Flog It!” enthusiasts and Paul Martin fans. Speaking after the event Elizabeth said, “We provided some lively, animated television; I can report some very happy vendors, but I mustn’t spoil your viewing of the programmes by saying more. Suffice to say, it was an extremely enjoyable day - as always.” Transmission dates have not been published by the BBC yet, but they will be made known at the Auction Rooms and on the TW Gaze facebook page as soon as they are scheduled.

90 Years of Serving and caring for Ex-Service and Serving Members of the Armed Forces in Diss & District.
Carnival Day is Sunday 16th June so make a note in your diaries to keep this date free! The entertainment commences with the Hoxon Hundred Morris dancers plus friends who will be giving performances in the Market Place and Meres Mouth from 11.30am. The procession through the town will be at 1pm and this year will be led, following their success last year, by the Glenmoriston Pipe Band. The theme for this year's procession is 'Moments in History' which could be recent events such as the Olympics 2012 or back to the 10th/11th century or even further!! It is hoped that this theme will encourage even more groups to take part so prove us right by entering a float, walking group or even vehicles As usual the Fun Day starts at 2pm at Diss Town Football Club in Brewers Green Lane. The afternoon entertainment includes the 100 Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dog Section from USAF base at Mildenhall also the return of the popular Climbing Wall, Bungey Trampolines, Combat Paintball and new for this year will include Zoo-tastic,
Craft Marquee, Creation Station and Imps. Especially for the children Bazza Bizarre will again be performing circus tricks and there will be children's rides and displays. We have a variety of stalls provided by local clubs and societies and there will be plenty of refreshments available including a BBQ, Hog roast and vegetarian option Park Radio have agreed to support us again this year and live on stage will be Zoom, Captain Kirks Mandolin and Little Red Kings. We have retained the entrance charges of adults £3 and children under 16 free when accompanied by an adult. The costs for such a large event are considerable and average £5,000+ per year and although the entrance fees contribute towards this cost we rely very much on the support of the community and businesses to make the Carnival the success that it has been for the last 5 years. This will be our 6th Diss Carnival and with the theme we have chosen and a wider range of entertainment we hope it will prove to be the best yet, so come along on 16th June and enjoy a great family day out!! On our 90th a n n i v e r s a r y, we'd like to warmly thank all who have helped in our work, including the Members of the Cadet Forces who kindly help with our Poppy Appeals. In the Branch, membership is falling and we NEED younger members.
Members are not required to have served in the Forces but must embrace the concepts of the RBL and be supportive of the RBL Branch. In May 2013 we are holding a ‘Branch Members and Supporters Lunch’ at the Park Hotel. Coming later in the year are: Celebrate Armed Forces Day - 29th May, BBQ - 13th July, Car Boot Sale - August and the A.G.M. in October 2013.
New chief inspector heads-up South Norfolk A new Chief Inspector has been appointed for South Norfolk. Ch Insp Stuart Armes now leads the district overseeing the Diss, Harleston, Long Stratton, Poringland, Loddon, Wymondham, Hethersett and Mulbarton, and Costessey safer neighbourhood teams. He brings 26 years of policing experience to the job. Ch Insp Armes Chief inspector said: "I’m looking forward to building on the Stuart Armes previous good work in the district with the ultimate aim of reducing crime and anti-social behaviour even further."

New Eccles Hall School Fun Day

The Spring Fashion Show organised by DISS W.I. in conjunction with M & Co. was a great success. The Corn Hall was filled to capacity and the audience joined in with enthusiasm enjoying the excellent and entertaining commentary and the eye catching display of lovely clothes displayed by models from 8 years old to over 80 years old. In the interval free refreshments were provided and a beautifully displayed table of craft items were available for sale. The Macular Eye Society, the chosen charity was represented with information available from members who

are unfortunately affected by this problem. Before the show resumed colourful and exciting musical and dance entertainment filled the stage with the LK School of Dance giving a wonderful exhibition of their talents. The final part of the evening was the eagerly anticipated Prize Draw. Over 56 prizes had been donated by businesses and organisations from Diss for which we are very grateful. Thanks to all those that helped and contributed to make it possible for Diss W.I. to achieve our goal and raise a substantial sum for the local Macular Eye Society.

We are holding a fun day to raise money for our school charity project to Paraguay. There, we will be working with the street children and hope to build them a safe play area. As this is a charity project we are trying to get as much coverage as possible. We have to raise £30,000 for this project to work

Jesus Christ Superstar By Redgrave Church Heritage Trust. Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice, first staged on Broadway in 1971. The musical is based loosely on the Gospel’s account of the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with his triumphant arrival in Jerusalem and ending with his crucifixion, largely following the form of a traditional passion play.
Redgrave Church Heritage Trust is proud and privileged to have been granted a licence, by kind permission of The Really Useful Group, to perform this masterpiece of musical theatre in the beautiful 14th Century Church of St. Mary’s, Redgrave. Although an amateur Church production, we boast an enthusiastic and talented cast of 55 drawn from the local community of actors and singers, with a stirring score played by a live orchestra. By turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, Jesus Christ Superstar is a dramatisation full of thought provoking edge and explosive theatricals, bringing Christ’s final days to the stage in the greatest story ever told. Diss & The Man in The Iron Mask
Drawing up and drawing in
An intriguing tale.
At St. Mary's Church, Diss.
A recent enquiry to the museum has brought up an intriguing l o c a l connection with a romantic 18th century tale. Alexandre Dumas based his story The Man in the Iron Mask on a mysterious prisoner in the Bastille prison. Dumas made the prisoner the king’s brother; but historians think that he may have been Count Ercole Mattholi who was imprisoned for reneging on a political deal. In the early 19th century the Diss parish clerk was an Italian called Michael Mattholi. How and why he came here we do not know. But descendant Mark Praeger says that his great grandmother Harriott Hannah Mattholi said that the family had lands and servants in Italy that were taken away from them. He suspects that Michael fled as a political refugee. He was clearly an educated man at a time when most people could not write their own name let alone converse in a different language.
Coming also from a Catholic country he must have had particular talents to be accepted in the post of parish clerk. The Manning rectors obviously recognised an exceptional person. Mattholi was born in Italy about 1770 and died in Roydon in 1859. In 1830 he was a witness at his daughter Matilda’s wedding to Samuel Harper. His son, Michael Mattholi, carpenter, who was married to Jane (nee Frost or Foster) had a string of children: Michael Richard (1832), Edward (1835), Mary Maria (1836), Elizabeth (1839), Henry Mark (1842), Margaret Maria (1844), Frederick (1845), George (1847). Considering that there were several male Mattholis born at that time, it is surprising that the name is not mentioned in any 19th century directories. But they named only the professional classes. Sons of carpenters would not have qualified, unless they had gone up in the world. We have not yet looked at the census returns; but the family could well be mentioned and may have been here into the 20th century. Basil Abbott, Diss Museum.
A few weeks ago I saw parked in the town a white van with the words 'Charlie the chimney sweep' and as the phone number was not a local one I guess he was a busy man as there seems to be so many chimney fires in this county. When I was very young I looked forward to the sweep coming, not that my folks did as it was a very dirty job he had to do but I did look forward to seeing the brush poking out of the chimney pot. My grandmother who lived with us spent every morning in the winter months on her knees cleaning the ash out of the grate and hearth then building a new fire with coal, wood, twists of paper and fire lighters ready to be lit at 4pm whatever the weather, meanwhile a paraffin stove would sort of warm another room. Come the time for lighting and if the coal was a little damp a gadget in the fire place called 'a damper' would be pulled out which increased the air flow up the chimney and if that didn't work a large sheet of local newspaper would be held over the whole fireplace
which often resulted in a flame shooting out and catching the paper alight which quickly had to be put on the fire. That rather dangerous practice made the fire draw up and once the only room in the house was warm it would draw the family in for a cosy evening listening to the wireless. Now in complete contrast St. Mary's church in Diss has the ability to draw people up to read our notice boards and draw people in if they want to attend an event which may interest them. Whilst I'm still waiting to be told of any other summer concerts I will be concentrating on the two major events - the summer fete in July, full information in the June magazine and of course 'The Big Sing' in August. Both these popular occasions hopefully will draw many people up and into the church. That's what we strive to do for the whole community, the church working for the people at large. Gerry Hosking.

The home of the 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association and the official UK museum of the 95th Bomb Group in the UK is holding a 1940s Weekend on Saturday May 18th and Sunday May 19th. New at the Red Feather Club, Liberation 44 and Ranger reenactment groups present a full military camp display and reenactments of air force personnel. There will also be military vehicles and stalls and the Red Feather Club museum will be open. There is no admission fee. During the weekend (10am-4pm both days). On Saturday May 18th there will also be a 40s dance from 7pm until late with four DJs – Texas Tommy, Django Man, Short Back and Sides and & AV8 plus special guest singers Jodie Topsy Harris and Jade Grand - For dance tickets,
£8 per person. On Wednesday May 15th 2013 On the Wings of a Mighty Fortress, a documentary telling the story of 95th Bomb Group crew of “Easy Going”, will get its rescheduled UK premiere. For some years, one of the highlights of the summer in Diss has been the annual “Proms in the Park” concert organised by the Diss Rotary Club when the spirit of the Albert Hall, with flag waving and “Land of Hope and Glory”, has been brought to a June evening by the Mere. This year, the Rotary Club has decided to ring the changes to the regular format in order to appeal to a wider audience. “We felt that the evening needed a little freshening up so as not to be too predictable,” said Rotary Club President Keith Day. So, although it will retain its usual spot as part of the Diss Carnival weekend, the event now comes with a new name and an earlier starting time. The new name is “Park Alive” and the evening starts at 5:45pm with a half-hour session by Park Radio and DJ Chris Moyes,
who will also be the compere for the evening. This will be followed by two sessions by the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band with the crowning of the Carnival King and Queen between. The show then moves on with two sets by the popular local choir, Discord, which sandwich a performance by Captain Kirk and his Mandolins. The evening then closes with a further set from Park Radio. The whole evening is, as usual, free of charge but the Rotary Club will be selling tickets for the prize draw in the weeks before the event and there will be a retiring bucket collection. Refreshments are available on site. Profits from the event will be going to the East Anglian Children’s Hospice and the Rotary Foundation. So put the date, Saturday 15th June, in your diary and please pray for a warm, dry evening.

James Macleod, Anna Lancaster, and Steve Eldred On April 15th, Diss welcomed a new electrical retailer to the town. A.W. Myhill opened on the former site of Taylor Electrical, just opposite Morrisons. A. W. Myhill and Son was established in 1928. Over the years, the business grew from strength to strength and became an established independent electrical retailer. They then joined the Euronics buying group which enabled them to become very competitive in an ever-growing market. Being part of such a large buying group allowed Myhills to buy at competitive prices whilst still being able to keep its independent status which is what keeps the business different from the major retailers.
In 2009 the company underwent a management buy out. The owners retired leaving Anna Lancaster, Steve Eldred and James Macleod owning and running the business. At the time the business was not in the best position but with a lot of hard work and very good staff Myhills has turned itself around and become successful. They pride themselves on their fantastic customer service and still being part of the Euronics buying group are able to offer very competitive prices coupled with a great delivery, installation and after-sales service.They also have a very good white goods service department with an engineer who has worked for the company for over 35years. 'This year the opportunity arose for us to add a second branch in Diss,' says Anna Lancaster. 'It was something we'd always
wanted to do and when this prime position on Victoria Road became available we jumped at the chance.' Myhills stock a wide range of TVs, DVD players, ovens, washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, freezers and smaller items such as toasters and irons. They also sell sundry items such as bulbs, batteries and extension leads. Open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 5pm, pop in for a browse or to get some friendly advice. In an industry that has seen a lot of electrical retailers close it

Collecting Curiosities’ is a curious thing!!!
I am attraction to silver objects especially those that have a purpose. The Victorian and Edwardian eras were the prestigious golden ages for the manufacture of these items, often duel purposed both decorative and practical - encapsulated in the form of cases, vinaigrettes, vestas and the myriad of chain accoutrements. Often the objects are made to the highest of workmanship to demonstrate their abilities as Silversmiths’. This coupled with the vibrant colours within the elaborate enamelling intensifies t h e desirability of the individual items as well

as the practicability. The origins of enamelling silver can be traced back to ancient Egyptian, Middle Eastern, Byzantine and Chinese cultures.The accoutrements come in many forms from job related tools - whistles, knives, cutters, pencils and novelties (champagne twiddles & tooth picks) to decorative fobs to accentuate the watch chain. Vesta cases (matchstick holders to you and me!!) cigarette boxes and card cases are often very desirable and command the best prices. The collectability is often intertwined with the specific collects needs, sporting memorabilia and famous personalities from the vintage era are always popular, along with the plethora of animals that can be found donning the enamelled fronts. Ladies Compacts are always sought after with their flamboyant engine turned colours that are almost translucent, they always make a wonderful ladies gift as the practicality still appeals in the modern market. A favourite unique item is superb quality silver box hallmarked Sheffield (L)

representing the date later for 1953 commissioned made by the prolific silversmiths Walker & Hall as a good wishes present from a rival Greyhound trainer the famous Lesley Reynolds to the trainer Paddy McElroy who won the 1953 Coronation greyhound Derby with “Daws Dancer”. The commerciality of Gentlemen’s’ card cases depicting scantily clad ladies more commonly referred to as Gibson Girls (the principle models were Camille Clifford & Viscountess Lady Nancy Astor) are another favourite in the collectors market. Card Cases and compacts generate good money when in pristine condition. However if you are starting a collection as with anything remember that damage devalues the cost considerably as the
cost to repair broken enamelling is often greater than the objects final value… Another favourite is a fully hallmarked silver cigarette case made in Birmingham and shows an immaculate enamel portrait of Queen Victoria’s jockey Freddie Archer who had notorious fame during the era, a somewhat Frankie Dettori of his generation. I recently reluctantly sold a silver and enamel card case depicting Winston Churchill that I had a fond attachment to, but it went to a good home!!

It's hard to think of anything more British than cricket. And in Diss we're lucky to have an incredibly successful cricket team right in the heart of our town. This year Diss Cricket Club just like two other British success stories, the London Underground

and the Football Association - is celebrating its 150th anniversary. As the most senior team in the area, the Club's first team plays in the highest level of county cricket, the Norfolk Alliance Premier League. They also field a second and third adult team to enable players of all abilities to play and enjoy the game. 'Having three teams of different levels enables us to really bring on the younger players and give them experience in senior cricket,' says Chairman Martin Fairweather. In
fact, youth Cricket is incredibly important at Diss Cricket Club. 'With fewer schools teaching cricket skills, it's up to clubs like us to keep the game alive and thriving,' says Martin Fairweather. So much so that Diss Cricket Club has arranged to send fully-qualified coaches into local primary schools to coach cricket skills. And Diss Cricket Club itself really is the perfect place for both boys and girls to learn the sport. The English Cricket Board has awarded the club prestigious Clubmark Status which means it's an ECB accredited safe and
welcoming environment offering high quality coaching for young people. With three mixed teams - under 11s, under 13s, and under 15s - there's plenty of opportunities for local children and teenagers of all ages to get involved. 'We warmly invite local boys and girls over the age of 8 along to the club,' says Martin Fairweather. 'We hold coaching sessions on a Friday night throughout the summer from 6-7.30pm and

'Any adults wanting to play are also very welcome as we field teams at three levels, there is always space to fit new players in somewhere and they would be very welcome,' says Martin Fairweather. 'If they cannot play on a Saturday there are also Sunday friendlies to play in.' Also welcome are any members of the public who would like to come and support their local team. 2013 sees the Club really moving forward and developing their already impressive facilities further. Recently, they fundraised to buy a tractor and gang mowers to cut their own outfield. Plans are also afoot to raise money to install new state-of-the-art practise nets. To celebrate their 150th anniversary they will be holding various events culminating in a party at the club over the August Bank Holiday weekend with all players, past and present, invited to join in the festivities. The main arena will host a variety of displays including exhibitors showcasing their vintage tractors, steam engines and vehicles as well as a battle between the rival Clan’s Clan Wulfhar and The Bifrost guard. A jumping agility course and a pet show will also be set up by Mid Suffolk Dog Handlers so you can enter your dog and discover or improve their talents. Throughout the day, there will also be chance for you and your dog to have a go at the ‘Flyball’ run and visit Pet Pals who will be selling a range of accessories. If by now you are in need of some food, do not worry, there is a variety of options with a hog roast supplied by Reade Caterers Ltd, The Curry Cart and South African food. You could visit the Rustic Kitchen in the beer tent which will serve locally sourced seasonal dishes and a BBQ. The Rustic Bar is in
keeping with the vintage theme with traditional wooden barrels, hops, barley sheaves as well as containing equipment used in the brewing industry. The bar will entice the alternative drinker giving them the opportunity to sample a variety of refreshments that include local, traditional, real ales and ciders as well as draught lager, wines, spirits and soft drinks for you to enjoy whilst soaking up the atmosphere. As for something sweet, Candy Carnival will be selling real fudge and Really Good Sweets will offer a variety of confectionary treats. Look out for Gallery Slave’s Tricycles selling ice creams too. If you go down to the woods today... You'll have a great day at BeWILDerwood - the Curious Treehouse Adventure...
Situated in Hoveton, just 8 miles from Norwich, BeWILDerwood is a magical forest of family fun and outdoor adventure. This awardwinning attraction is awash with treehouses, zip wires, slides, jungle bridges, boat trips and even magical creatures! We visited BeWILDerwood on a sunny but cold April day with five children (aged 11, 9, 4, 4 and 2). Right from the start, the place seemed truly magical as we climbed aboard the boat that would transport us through the Dismal Dyke and onto the Sccaaaaary Lake. The kids loved spotting Mildred the Crocklebog who greeted us with a great
spout of water. We also heard all about the Boggles and Twiggles who live in Bewilderwood and us adults were told that we are allowed on everything inside - hooray we got to be kids again for the day! After disembarking we headed up into the forest where the children got increasingly more excited at the treehouses, bridges and zip wires that greeted us. Each section had a wide range of things for children of each age range to experience. The Wobbly Wires section was fantastic with zip wires and swings for all ages. We then moved on to BeWilderville - a village built up in the trees with bridges to cross and even a Wood Witch to spot. The Mudlde Maze had us all in stitches as those who'd already found their way to the centre watched from above as the rest of us tried to work out which way to go. The Slippery Slopes section was fantastic fun as
we all took the plunge and slid down the slides - even the littlest one! Toddlerwood on the Hill was perfect for the youngest three and even had its own mini zip wire with a seat to keep the mini-adventurers safe. As it was Easter Holidays when we went, all five children had a great time making Easter bonnets with some of the BeWILDerwood staff and they also loved the story-telling show where they dressed up and joined in with the BeWILDewood cast of characters. The Tricky Tunnels area was a big favourite with all ages with its tunnels, rope bridges and seesaw.
We also loved making our own den in the den-building area, although the Dads loved it the most! Dotted across BeWILDerwood are a series of cafes that served high-quality, reasonably-priced food - despite the weather, the ice creams were a big hit! There is also a fantastic shop stocking a wide range of magical items for all budgets. It's fair to say BeWILDerwood was a big hit all-round with us. As we drove out of the car park, my 4-year-old asked when we were coming back! 'As soon as possible,' I replied. And I meant it!

is confused as to who is marrying who. Things get complicated when it appears that both brothers have been ‘intimate’ with the bride. Exactly who is the father and how much gin can Grandad put away on the sly? This is a production to leave you with a smile on your face and a tug on your heartstrings. Hypoglycaemia is the name given to a condition where blood sugar levels are lower than normal and this happens when we leave it too long before we eat or don’t eat enough to supply our body with enough calories to function. Therefore when our blood sugar is low and the body needs energy, it

signals the adrenal glands to release Cortisol. Cortisol stimulates the liver to convert glycogen (a stored carbohydrate), fats, carbohydrates, proteins into blood glucose (sugar) to raise this level and keep us functioning. If you go prolonged periods without food regularly

your body is releasing Cortisol to maintain glucose levels in the blood, while insulin helps usher glucose into our cells. If Cortisol and insulin remain high in the blood and the extra glucose isn’t needed for energy it will be stored in the form of fat - primarily abdominal fat cells. High levels or Cortisol is associated with the following: • Increased appetite and food cravings; • Increased body fat; • Decreased muscle mass; • Decreased bone density; • Increased anxiety; • Increased depression; • Mood swings (anger and irritability) • Reduced libido (sex drive); • Impaired immune response; • Memory and learning impairment; • Increased symptoms of premenstrual syndrome;
• Increased menopausal sideeffects (hot flashes, night sweats). So the best way to lose weight is to eat little and often to prevent our blood sugar levels dropping too low and to also prevent high levels of Cortisol within our blood stream. Other ways to control blood sugar levels are to eat foods low on the glycaemic index, take regular exercise, reduce your stress levels and stay away from sugary foods & drinks and other caffeinated drinks. Your Local Magazine spoke to Chiropodist and Podiatrist William Hutchings... Q. Please describe the services you offer? A. We diagnose and treat the majority of common foot complaints such as ingrown toenails, veruccae, hard skin, corns, foot odour problems, fungal nail infections, painful heels (plantar facilitis) and foot/leg pain (insole therapy). We are able to perform minor surgery under local anaesthetic at the clinic e.g ingrown toenail correction and can also treat soft tissue injuries such as strains and sprains with low level laser and strapping. We also work with people with minor ulcerations on their feet and diabetic related problems. We also perform diabetic checks and doppler assessments of the feet and lower legs. You'd be surprised how many people are walking around with problems and they don't know it - on some occasions the feet are where they present first.
Q. How has footcare changed over the years? A. I think the two areas where it has changed quite significantly are firstly, when I started there were non-regulated Chiropodists and Podiatrists and regulated ones (State Registered). Since 2006 both the terms Chiropodist and Podiatrist are protected by law – as in you can’t call yourself one if you haven’t registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). This was set up to protect the general public from people who weren’t trained. Now the nonregulated call themselves foot care professionals. Secondly, there is a far more proactive approach to treatment,
in particular wound healing and prevention of amputations to people with conditions were the circulation is affected ie diabetics and circulatory hindered based conditions. A traditional pub in a beautiful village Visit the Four Horseshoes at Thornham Magna.
Said to be the oldest pub in Suffolk, The Four Horseshoes is situated in the picturesque village of Thornham Magna, a mile off the A140. With its pretty pink façade and thatched roof, this 12th century pub is about as traditionally English as cups of tea and cricket. They offer good food and comfortable accommodation as well as being the ideal venue for meetings, functions and parties.
As we waited, we took a seat next to a lovely open log fire. The walls of the bar are decorated with funny quotes about wine including, ‘Wine improves with age, the older I get the more I like it!’ For our meal we were seated at a cosy round table in the busy restaurant. There was a choice of 11 starters and we went for Tender Chicken, Prawn Cocktail, Chef ’s Homemade Crab Cakes and Horseshoe Mushroooms. They were all nicely presented and very tasty. Ask the Chef! Dear Simon, What is the best way to cook a steak & how do you know when it’s cooked, plus any sauce suggestions? Yours Mrs. P Brown of Tivetshall. Hi Mrs. P Brown, the best way to cook a steak to keep the moisture and flavour in is to use vegetable oil and use either a griddle pan or frying pan, turn the steak often and the test to see if it’s done is to gently press down with your finger to see how firm it is, the firmer the steak the more well-cooked it is. Let the steak rest for about 3 minutes before serving, this allows the juices that have been drawn to the surface to relax back into the meat. Cooking times will vary depending on the type and thickness of the steak, and how hot your pan is. As a rule a Medium Rare steak will take approx 2 minutes each side. Green Peppercorn Sauce Ingredients • 2 to 3 tablespoons mixed peppercorns • 60g butter • 1 shallot, minced • 100ml brandy • 100ml beef stock • 60ml double cream • salt to taste Method 1. First crush the peppercor ns slightly, either using a mortar and pestle or a rolling pin. 2. Next melt the butter in a saucepan over medium high heat. Add the shallot s and sauté these until soft, approx 3 minutes. Ad d the brandy and boil for another 3 minutes. Then add beef stock and boil another 3 minutes. 3. Finally, add the cream and lower the heat to medium. Heat through, but don't allo w the peppercorn sauce to boil. Once the sauce is at your desired thickness, add seasoning if required.

This month they are celebrating the first anniversary of opening their shop and showroom in a beautifully converted barn and purpose built design studio. “It’s been an amazing year,” says Lanassir Lawes who started Swank Interiors in 2009 offering a design service from a studio in her home. “I wanted to create the ultimate Interior Design experience where clients can be inspired by
real rooms that showcase my design work, while also offering an enjoyable retail experience that allows customers to sit comfortably with a cup of coffee while browsing through our huge fabric and wallpaper collection- we have over 400 pattern books in our library and are stockists of Little Greene paint.” The sympathetically restored barn is home to an Aladdin’s cave of home accessories from cushions and throws to vases and a superb collection of faux flowers that
would brighten up any home. “We are always looking to stock something different and support British makers where possible.” says Lanassir. An exciting new addition is an exclusive range of giftware made by Bressingham based Ceramicist Claire Porter consisting of plates, coasters and wall hangings. Lanassir is assisted by Charli Appleton and Helen Jennings who are also trained Interior Designers so there is always a professional on hand to help. “We work as a
creative team and bounce ideas off each other - this has been really helpful with my own home renovation project too,” says Charli who will be sharing the pictures of her completed home in next month’s issue. Helen adds; “It’s great because the 3 of us have quite different personal styles so clients are guaranteed an open minded approach - we don’t have one particular style, we listen to our clients and design for them.”

Wotcha!... The weather has been in the news again – whether we like it or not! The freezing temperatures in March made it the UK's second coldest since records began more than 100 years ago (Met. Office). Only March 1962 was colder. That's alright then. And one of the local papers said we had 2.4 inches of rain in March. Well, I don't know where that was measured but it couldn't have been Diss! Is Diss the driest town in England? It feels like it. The picture above is of my wife's home in Finland; they have real snow there, but would you believe it they've already planted their potatoes! I'm writing this on 14th April and I haven't even bought mine yet. And they are always eating tomatoes before us. Sickening isn't it? I think it's because they don't seem to have a spring in Finland, whereas our springs are usually just a continuation of winter! Spring is my favourite time of the year for two reasons: (1) You're full of hope for the coming season, and you're not going to make the mistakes you made last year. (2) There are no weeds! (sorry, wild flowers). Dew yew keep a troshin and remember, snowdrops can be separated now if you want to spread them round your garden. This has to be done while the dew is still on them. A traditional bi-annual occasion since 1989, when Diss Mount Street residents open their gardens, both big and small with the proceeds all going to Christian Aid. A children's Hunt the Creature, Morris Dancers on the street, a large plant stall near the clinic, afternoon tea/coffee and home-made cakes in St Mary's Church Hall, all make for a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon. Mount Street was greatly admired by Betjeman when he came to film here in 1963. The Manor House, originally
called Pallas, is one of the most distinguished buildings, and opposite is the Rectory. One of the cottages just south of that building has an illustration of a baker showing it used to be Brighton's bakery. To replace the firestones, which never really cooled down, a man used to have to cover himself with sacking and be drenched with water to get inside the oven, and he still came out almost in flames! And on the south side of the street is a cottage with the date 1709 displayed. Here used to be the Sweet Shop and a haven of sweets, icecream and lollies. Situated in Bungay, it is a safe place for elderly people to socialise, enjoy home cooked food and provides an opportunity to participate in a wide range of recreational activities encouraging physical and mental stimulation.  Daycare is equally beneficial to carers, enabling them to enjoy
a well-deserved break. Special diets can be catered for and a choice of menu is offered. A bathing service is also available and is ideal for people struggling to get in and out of the bath at home. On a pub crawl... With Attleborough Heritage Group. On an evening more reminiscent of a scene on the front of a Victorian Christmas card than the second day of Spring, a packed house of members and friends of Attleborough Heritage Group (AHG) enjoyed a fascinating illustrated tour of about forty Inns, Public Houses, Hotels, Beer houses and Taverns which once existed in Attleborough and some neighbouring villages. The scene was set when the audience learned that Richard II passed a law in 1393 stipulating that all premises selling alcohol must display a sign indicating this activity, thus enabling the public to know where to buy their beer and the authorities to know where to collect their taxes. Extensive research had revealed that of the forty historic premises licensed to sell alcohol only nine remain today. Many have become private houses or shops
and of some no trace remains at all save perhaps in a street name or some lumps and bumps on the corner of a road. Some sites for Beer houses have proved elusive to locate although reference can be found on 19th century census forms. Further, many Beer houses were situated in close proximity to Public Houses and one, in an extraordinary piece of planning, was established opposite to a Methodist Chapel. Presumably the regulars had not signed the pledge! Other fascinating facts emerged such as that relating to a Beer House called The Spread Eagle in what is now Hargham Road. At the rear was a clay lump windowless building called the Bear House in which the performing bear and his master would sleep when they were in Attleborough to entertain the populace. Among many remarkable and ancient buildings in the Town with
stories to tell are two on opposite sides of the road from one another. The Angel, now a Building Society, was used during WWII as an ambulance station and, incidentally, is said to be haunted. Across the road, the Griffin, one of the nine remaining Public Houses, has a cellar which was probably used to house prisoners on their way to Thetford Assizes while upstairs a 19th century add-on to the 16th century building is now a hotel bathroom but was once a laying-out room for the local undertaker. The evening gave an intriguing insight into the lives of our forefathers including descriptions of disreputable behaviour and charges of assault. Seemingly little changes! Jacqueline Amos, on whose research the talk was primarily based, said “It was a lot of hard work but all seems worth it when the evening was such
a success.” AHG which began in 2009 now has approximately 150 members and runs a series of illustrated talks on the history of the Town drawn from its comprehensive photographic and documentary archive and research by its members. ‘Preserving yesterday’s and today’s memories for tomorrow’

Of course if you have a payment on account to make in
July, you might want to complete your return to see if this payment is correct. No one wants to pay too much and if your return is complete before July, it may be that you won’t need to make a July payment on account. Of course we saw the start of Real Time Information (RTI) for payroll in April. If you or your employer is struggling with completing returns then maybe now is the time to hand over your payroll to a payroll provider. Not only can we prepare weekly or monthly payslips but we can also submit the returns to HMRC for you so you don’t have to stress about the new system. Well, here we are into our second week of trading, and what a fabulous time we've had so far. The people of Diss have been amazing. We have been welcomed by visitors, locals and businesses with open arms. The "oooh's" and "aaah's" and squeals of delight that emanate from the corners of our shop are heart-warming for us and make all the hard work worthwhile. I count my blessings that I get to come in everyday to a beautiful shop, be surrounded by beautiful and unique items that are made and/or crafted by a variety of very talented people and actually get paid for it! The reactions from people have been very positive and many of our
visitors are bringing other friends in and commenting on the everchanging products. Because we rent cabinet space to- and sell products for - other people, we always have such a variety of things for sale and as they're selling their products, they replenish the shelves with different items, making each day a new experience. So, if you're looking for handmade bath products or a wood turned fruit bowl, a dragon clock or a pair of earrings made from recycled carrier bags then please make Rags, Bows & Curios your first port of call.
Charity Egg Hunt Completes 1st year with flying colours.

Over 130 children, accompanied by family members, braved biting winds, sleet and occasional snow flurries to take part in the 1st Harleston Charity Easter Egg Hunt. Taking place on Wednesday, Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday, the hunt followed a trail around Harleston town centre to raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. There were 2 trails, one for up to age 9 and one for over 9s through to adults. Organised by Harleston based

chocolatiers, Just Truffles, at The Pod in Church Street, the trail was acclaimed a success by children, parents and the shopkeepers around the town. All correct entries were entered into a prize draw for hand-made Easter Eggs made by Just Truffles. Eva Mullen of Mendham won 1st prize for the under 9s, with Zak Hills-Brown of Harleston receiving 2nd prize; Emily Wiles of Harleston took 1st prize in the over 9s trail and Nick Unwin of Mendham received 2nd prize in the over 9s. A total of £188 was raised, from 133 participants and additional donations from the Eco Shop and Attwood Acorn. Thanks must also go to the 25 participating businesses and to all the local primary schools for helping to advertise the event and to Neil Stone and Stewart Silkstone of Fuller Davies printers from Ipswich who produced the entry forms free of charge.
