WEEKLY INTERIORS HOW TO:

Add value to

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

By Katrina Chambers The ingredients are all there. A busy housing market with low interest rates, reality television shows and the willingness of people to do it themselves is prompting home renovations across the country. And never has there been a more inspirational time with images and ideas at fingertips thanks to social media (hello Pinterest) with tutorials and inspiration everywhere.

professional who might only use the space on weekends. If you are not sure what will be sought-after in your area, grab a real estate agent and ask for their opinion.

To sharpen up your place, it doesn’t have to be a full house renovation either; it can just be time for a makeover. As bathrooms and kitchens are the most used areas in the house, most people want to start there. If this is something you’re keen to try, but don’t know where to start, here are some tips for you. It’s hard to know what will add value, or what will just be a big fat waste of time.

Depending on the final plan, costs can vary. You could spend anywhere from $3,000 to more than $20,000, but as this type of work doesn’t need building permits (unless you move the plumbing), and it provides the best return on investment.

If you’re planning to sell, it helps if you have a potential buyer in mind before your start because you’ll need to work out whether to renovate for a busy family or a

We’ve all heard that saying before - kitchens sell houses - and spending time planning, finding ideal materials and defining a style is well spent.

Huge cosmetic changes can be made to kitchens and bathrooms by simply replacing benchtops, repainting cupboards, replacing handles, adding new appliances or installing new tapware, splash-backs or door handles. Here’s a list of DOs and DON’Ts for kitchen and bathroom makeovers:

WEEKLY GARDENING

Growing

PROTEAS by Mick Forrell: Wagga Nursery Proteas and Telopia are ancient plant relics from Gondwanaland with species spread across the three southern land masses – Australia, South Africa and South America. Australia’s waratahs are grown in similar conditions to protea and prefer sandy loam or well drained open soils. Although some varieties may grow in heavier soils, they will not survive in clay. Heavy soils can be improved by digging in compost and gypsum to help break up clay and It’s advisable to mound up your garden beds to facilitate free drainage beause they do not like to be water-logged. Proteas often grow best in acid soils where the PH is between 5.6 and 6.5. Some varieties will tolerate neutral to alkaline soils with a PH between 6.6 to 7.5. So, it is very important to identify your soil type and make any adjustments to achieve the ideal growing media for your chosen protea plants.

Cream Mink

When planting in old garden beds it may be necessary to add sandy loam and compost to reduce the negative effect of any residual phosphorus from previous fertiliser use and proteas are best grown well away from plants which require regular feeding and it’s recommended NOT to use mushroom compost, blood and bone, manures and products such as dynamic lifter because they contain a nutrient balance not suited to protea preferences. When planting in the garden, dig a hole to twice the width of the pot size placing the plant no deeper than it was in the pot in which it was purchased. Firm the soil around the plant and support with a stake if required. If grown in a container, choose one twice the size of the original pot. Use native potting mix and ensure the container is raised off the ground to improve drainage.

Choose a full-sun position with good air movement and add native slow release fertiliser to ensure an abundance of flowers. However, there is a variety of protea which will perform well in a semishaded position. Once established, proteas can withstand frosts and temperatures as low as -6C. It is advisable to check varieties to establish which plant will suit your climate. Mulch your plants with any organic material to protect the surface roots, retain moisture and minimise weeds. If weeds are a nuisance, it is best to remove them by hand beacuse proteas are sensitive to herbicides. Proteas are reasonably tough once established and require a good watering twice a week in the first summer and daily during extreme hot weather. It is important not to let the soil dry out completely, especially while establishing young plants. Watering can gradually be reduced as the plant becomes established over a couple of years at which stage, frequency of watering will depend on the prevailing weather conditions. Protea grown in pots, require daily watering during hot weather. The South African Protea and the Australian Telopea, (Waratah) belong to the Protaeceae family and can be treated the same in cultivation. With the right preparation and growing conditions these plants can survive years either in the garden or as potted specimens. The plants produce an abundance of long lasting flowers which can last up to three weeks once in a vase. To get more information on any of the above variries of plants visit Wagga Nursary at 7161 Olympic Highway Wagga Wagga or call them on 02 6931 2600.

WEEKLY INSPIRATIONS

PERFECT STUDIES that everyone wants By Inspirations Paint Wagga

Study spaces don’t always have to be whole rooms - transform the end of a hallway or empty wall into a study nook perfect for homework or small at-home tasks.

Green is a great neutral colour to use in a shared study room. Soft greens promote a comfortable and soothing environment pefect for kids doing their homwork.

Using white in an office is always heavily debated. White rooms create an air of simplicity and sophistcation, and is the perfect template for decorating with fun modern artwork. Minimalist, industrial chic is a popular design choice. Soften the look with rugs and fresh plants.
