WEEKLY INTERIORS

Feeling stressed? TRY THESE

INDOOR PLANTS!

By Katrina Chambers If you’re feeling a little jittery and overwhelmed at the moment it may be due to the winter blues, fewer daylight hours or being in the midst of school holidays. Whatever the cause of stress, did you know that potted indoor plants can help relieve some tension. Not only do they look good, they serve a practical purpose. Spending time in nature reduces stress levels and tension so it’s a no-brainer that indoor plants will help do the same. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen; while we are sleeping, indoor plants are naturally refreshing the air.

PHILODENDRON: MONSTERA DELICIOSA In the interior-design world, these plants are super popular at the moment. With their big and swishy cheese-shaped leaves they are particularly efficient at absorbing xylene, a pollutant which negatively affects the brain, kidneys, liver and reproductive system.

These five plants absorb the toxins and instill a sense of calm…

ALOE VERA This plant is handy when it comes to soothing cuts and burns, but it can also help to monitor the air quality in your home. The plant can help clear the air of pollutants found in chemical cleaning products, and when the amount of harmful chemicals in the air becomes excessive, the plants’ leaves will display brown spots. It grows best with lots of sun.

RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 9

WEEKLY INTERIORS PEACE LILY The name alone makes you want one. The beautiful peace lily plant is a wonderful low-maintenance flower to keep in the home and their lush green leaves actively reduce household toxins.

RUBBER PLANT Rubber plants are good for cleaning the air and are relatively easy to grow because they can thrive even in dim lighting and cooler climates. They look great too. The low-maintenance plant is a powerful air purifier because it removes toxic formaldehyde which can be trapped in carpets, particle or press-board type composite wood products, building materials, insulation, household products, fertilisers and cigarette smoke.

JADE Considered the lucky plant or money tree, jade is used in Feng Shui to attract the energy of wealth and prosperity by producing positive vibrations to bring prosperity to the owner of the house or business. It is traditionally placed at the front or back door. The addition of plants in your home has many benefits – visible and invisible - as they quietly go about their role of sucking in carbon dioxide and other toxins and releasing life-enhancing oxygen while being lush and gorgeous.

WEEKLY GARDENING

Frost Protection

AND PREVENTION TIPS by Mick Forrell: Wagga Nursery

Frost is a recurring factor which can turn your precious plants into mush in a single strike, but it is possible to keep frost-tender plants alive over the winter period ifthey are provided with some forms of protection. Frost forms when the ground gets below zero degrees Celsius. The moisture in the air freezes and settles. When water freezes, it expands posing a big problem for plant cells. The expansion causes the cells to burst, causing damage.

MULCH AND WATER Rake mulch away from the plants during the day to allow the ground to warm then replace it at night to trap the heat underneath. On the other hand, water retains its heat very well so, if a cool, clear night is forecast and you think there’s a chance of frost, gently water plants to keep the ground slightly warmer. However, use cool or slightly warm water, not hot so your plant’s roots are not damaged.

SEAWEED BASED SOLUTION In the lead-up to winter, water tender plants treated with a seaweedbased solution will assists them develop an internal resistance to frost. Seaweed solution takes about a week to take effect if you spray it on the leaves, and two to three weeks when applied to the roots.

Ensure the survival of your tender plants by adding frost protection.

RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 11

WEEKLY GARDENING POTASSIUM Toughen plants by applying a quick-acting liquid potassium fertiliser. Potassium helps to thicken plants’ cell walls, making the plant hardier and more able to deal with colder weather.

BIODEGRADABLE FROST PROTECTION These sprays work by creating a protective polymer film over the upper and lower surfaces of leaves and stems. These sprays are an anti-transpiring agent, which also protect plants from drought, excess heat and sunburn. These protection sprays are biodegradable so need to be reapplied monthly during frosty weather. Be sure to apply seaweed solution before spraying with frost protection products to ensure the seaweed solution gets taken up by the plant.

MICROCLIMATES

We strongly recommend Grow Better seaweed concentrate for its convenience, performance and affordability.

There will be many microclimates in established gardens providing protection for sensitive plants. However many special plants will require greater protection. At a pinch, any materials such as old sheets, curtains and shade cloth will do. The most effective solution is using the specialised material called frost cloth, horticultural fleece or thermal control fabric. Draping frost cloth over small shrubs and trees and securing it to the ground with bricks, or another heavy weight, traps heat that has collected in the soil during the day and releases it slowly at night, preventing frost formation. It can be left on the plant for extensive periods, day and night, because it allows rain and about 70% of light through.

The addition of coloured pots and annual flowering seedlings will brighten up you garden and encourage you to use your outdoor areas on sunny winters days,

WEEKLY INSPIRATIONS

Set the mood with

COLOUR By Inspirations Paint Wagga

The home is an escape and the bedroom, our oasis and need to be designed and decorated in colours suiting our style and personality, evoking the mood we wish to create. According to our loyalty program, Paint Club, which records the paint colours used by customers in their homes, the master bedroom is by far the most popular room painted. This trend will no doubt continue as Australians increasingly opt to spend more time retreating at home and making the most of their leisure time. With the link between design and wellbeing increasingly evident, we’re here to help you understand the psychology behind colour and how best to apply it to your surroundings, especially in the bedroom.

Red has often been associated with passion, love, emotion and energy. Red will lift the pulse rate and is not considered a restful colour. It is for this reason that special consideration must be given to just where and how much red is used in a bedroom. If you have trouble falling asleep, don’t use red. However, to spice up a tired relationship, red may be just what the doctor ordered. According to Inspirations Colour Consultant Michelle Sloan, red should be used sparingly in a bedroom. “Try feature walls and accessories only. Red is a great colour when paired with neutrals,” Michelle advises.

Blue is considered one of the most universally popular colours associated with calmness, serenity, loyalty, protection, blue skies and seas. Blue prevents nightmares, promotes intellectual thoughts and is believed to keep hunger at bay. Lisa Christie warns that: “Depending on the natural light in the room and its aspect, blue can look cold and therefore be unwelcoming.” Aquamarine shades teamed with white achieves a fresh and revitalised feeling. It is the one colour that stretches across the widest spectrum from Aquamarines through to Violets and Lavenders.

RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 13

WEEKLY INSPIRATIONS Green promotes feelings of well-being, harmony, nature, security, stability and balance, and is known to aid concentration and creative thoughts. Green is a calming colour very pleasing to the senses. It also is the colour associated with envy, good luck, generosity, and fertility. It is the traditional colour of peace, harmony, comfort, nurturing and well-paced energy. Michelle Sloan says:“Green is a soothing and restful colour and can easily be teamed with accent colours. It’s often a favourite for bedrooms, especially baby’s rooms.” Lisa Christie recommends injecting different shades of olive green to ensure that your room doesn’t make you too complacent or laid back.

Yellow is almost always associated with happiness, laughter and good times. A person surrounded by yellow feels optimistic because the brain actually releases more serotonin when around this colour. Michelle Sloan states that: “Yellows in a bedroom are seen to be purifying and stimulating to the nervous system.” She recommends using warm tones to lift the spirits and are restful, especially for bedrooms that are a little on the dark side. Lisa Christie says: “If over-used, yellow can be overpowering, but, used sparingly in just the right place it can be beautiful. Try darker shades of yellow, verging into golden shades, as they may be more appropriate for the bedroom.”

In its various forms, orange is warm, friendly and reassuring. It is an active colour that evokes feelings of excitement and can aid digestion. According to Lisa Christie, orange is becoming increasingly popular. “Oranges are rich, cosy and slightly spiced, but be aware that orange can make a room look smaller, therefore only use orange in a room with lots of natural light.” “Orange isn’t seen as conducive to sleep and relaxation, so it’s best avoided on a large scale on bedroom walls. Temporary accessories or artwork teamed with taupe walls are a great way to make your bedroom an exciting or active place,” Lisa says. Lisa’s favourite is various shades of orange teamed with shades of taupe. If you have any questions please call in and see us at 18 Dobney Avenue and speak to Allan, Tracy, Jenny, Dean or Rob. We are very happy to help.
