Indoor PLANTS by Mick Forrell: Wagga Nursery
I am composing this column from North Queensland while enjoying daytime temperatures of 27 degrees and being reminded by friends of the winter we left behind. As we walked around the gardens and parks admiring the many colourful leaves of plant life, I recalled the days when we used these plants in our homes.
CARE OF INDOOR PLANTS
We have spent the past few weeks in a caravan, and although the plants and scenery have been abundant, the lack of plant life inside the caravan leads me to the topic of indoor plants.
Use peat-free composts and avoid pouring leftover beverages such as tea or coffee onto indoor plants. These beverages will introduce sugars to the compost and make it an ideal breeding ground for sciurid flies.
With a little care and attention, some plants can thrive in our homes, work places, or even our mobile home. (I will use the next couple of weeks to introduce plants to our caravan and document their care while travelling.)
Variegated plants require a position in natural light to maintain their colours.
There are health benefits associated with the inclusion of plant life in the home and workplace, in addition to reducing stress and air purification.
IN THE WORKPLACE Most employees spend a majority of their time indoors, so it is important to create a space where they feel comfortable, which improves productivity. Indoor plants will boost morale, remove toxins and purify the air.
As with all plants, warmth, sunlight, water and food in the correct proportions are essential for them to maintain good health. Did you know the most common cause of indoor plant failure is over watering.
Plants acclimatise slowly to different surroundings by changing their leaf orientation and structure. Try not to move them around too much because they may not adapt as easily as you think. Regularly prune your plants keep them growing and bushy and to stop them becoming leggy. Once foliage on their lower branches has died, it is very difficult to rejuvenate them. RIP. How about swapping rugs, cushions or accessories? Work with what you have first to see what may suit other rooms in your home.
> CHANGE YOUR BED LINEN Dig out an older doona cover set and challenge yourself on how to work it with the decor you have. You might surprise yourself with the result.
> RE-STYLE YOUR VIGNETTES One of my favourite things to do is to go for a walk with my scissors and clip some eucalyptus branches then arrange them around my home. Create vignettes or focal points on key pieces of furniture by gathering together three or four beautiful pieces you have collected. Add a few pieces to a serving tray to create a focal point on your kitchen bench.

> PRINT NEW ART FROM ETSY It is so affordable to create new art this way. Head to ETSY and search for digital download prints and you’ll be shown a huge selection (they are cheap too!). Save them to a USB and head to Officeworks to print them off. Gather a group of affordable frames from Kmart or the op shop and you’ll have a gallery wall before you know it.
> REPLACE YOUR PHOTOS Print off recent photos from your phone at Officeworks or similar and replace the photos you have next to your bed or in the lounge room. Add pictures of your children’s friends and sporting teams in their bedroom and they will think it is great!
