WEEKLY INSPIRATION

Sunshine, kisses and tips ON MAKING OVER YOUR

BEDROOM

By Inspirations Paints Wagga Without doubt, bedrooms are the most painted room in the home, with more than five million bedrooms and nurseries painted in Australia every year! Whether you’re painting a child’s room, a teen retreat or your own sanctuary, Inspirations Paint have a few tips to help with your next bedroom make-over project. If you have any questions please call in and see us at 18 Dobney Avenue and speak to Allan, Tracy, Jenny, Dean or Rob. We are very happy to help.

COLOUR INSPIRATION If you’re looking for a fresh and airy feel, you can’t go wrong with neutrals, whites and light greys. If you want to add a pop of colour to that neutral base, popular colours at the moment are dusty pinks and deep blue-greys. Try Berger Prairie, Night Flight or Blue Dimension. You can introduce colour with a combination of painted furniture and soft furnishings, or you can create a cosy space by going bold and applying a darker shade on the walls. The sophisticated palette of muted tones also allows you to make the same colour scheme work for any age simply by adding age appropriate accessories and artwork. Remember, bedrooms are a place you can add personality and have a bit of fun too, so select a colour that you (or your little one) love and go for a muted tone in that colour to make it on trend.

RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 11

WEEKLY INSPIRATION

FEATURE INSPIRATION Just by using a good quality masking tape you can create a feature by sectioning areas and adding a variety of colours either in the same hue or in contrasting colours. HINT: Make sure you press the edge of the masking tape hard to avoid bleeding and use a plastic ruler to get even pressure. Finally, be careful not to make the coats too thick near the edge of the tape and remove it before the final coat is dry. Wallpaper, textured paints or decals are another great way to add interest to one or more walls and there are so many options available to add personality to your bedroom! Choosing the Paint Colour:

CHOOSING THE PAINT COLOUR Once you’re inspired, the next step is to select an actual paint colour for your project. First collect paint samples in colours which work in the space. Once the colour options have been narrowed, you can use large, hand painted colour samples known as Brush-Out Boards, to assist with the final colour selection. These allow you to move the board around and view the paint colour under different lighting conditions and get a feel for the best shade before committing to the final colour. Brush-Out Boards come ready painted with the actual paint so you don’t have to mess around with sample pots and painting splotches on your walls

WEEKLY GARDENING

May Vegetable

GARDENING GUIDE The key to successful winter vegetables is the quality of the seeds you’ve saved, swapped or purchased. Open pollinated seeds are the best as their flowers also provide food for bees during the colder months when there aren’t as many blooms for them through the other areas of the garden. The vegies in the brassica family love winter with the icy frosty night temperatures and have no problems with leaves freezing and thawing, unlike many other species. Adding old, broken-down animal manures to the soil prior to planting provides a nutrient-dense food supply for the germinating seeds and young, hungry roots. Four weeks after germination, water the seedlings with a very diluted seaweed solution or Converte organic plant-food or Nutrisoil; there are many brands available on the market but always make sure they are organic and derived from natural ingredients, not synthetics.

WEEKLY GARDENING

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE

living plants

By Katrina Chambers

E M O H R U O Y N I

Indoor plants have come and gone as a fashion item in interior decorating for at least 100 years. Back in 1999, I used to love them – was this because it was the same year I met my husband to be and moved in with him and they were the cool thing to have in your house? Not long afterwards, however, it was deemed they were too time consuming to look after and just plain daggy. Fast forward a decade plus a few years and I’m back to loving indoor plants again.

Spending time in nature has been linked to reducing stress levels and tension, so it seems a no-brainer that indoor plants will help do the same. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen so, whilst sleeping, these little darlings purify the air of pollutants found in chemical cleaning products and personal products such as shampoos and cosmetics. When the amount of harmful chemicals in the air becomes excessive, the plant’s leaves will display brown spots.

Have you noticed how fresh flowers add a luxe dimension to a room? The natural beauty of flowers provides a calming influence and simply being surrounded by beautiful items can change a sour mood into one of gratitude.

When dense-foliage plants are arranged in rows, they can provide a buffer to noise as the leaves absorb the sounds whether inside or outside the house.

Indoor plants can do the same; not only do they look good they have many health and stressrelieving qualities. Whatever stress you’re feeling did you know that potted indoor plants can help relieve some tension? In addition to the numerous health benefits, they can serve a practical purpose.

It’s common knowledge that red makes us hungry but green makes us feel at ease, calm and with a sense of tranquility. Aside from plants being practical they are soothing to look at, especially those with large lush leaves. Even the routine of watering plants and wiping their leaves of dust can be soothing.

I am a big fan of all foliage and I am grateful to raid a garden and throw the branches and leaves into a jar. When the boys and I go on a bush walk, I even take my scissors to gently snip cuttings and leaves so my house always has some greenery. Adding healthy indoor plants to your house is a very affordable and enjoyable way to improve air quality, reduce your stress and, with the right sort, even eat them.
