THINGS
your home (and you)
CAN LIVE WITHOUT
By Katrina Chambers
There are many things we can live without and still live comfortably and really not miss them at all. If you think your home space has shrunk. Rather than feeling like you’ve outgrown the space never has there been a more motivating time (thanks to the internet and making a few dollars) to start culling items in your home. It’s amazing how stuff makes us feel claustrophobic and drags us down, yet we still feel the need to hug ourselves with more and more stuff. By getting rid of things you can live without you’ll have more space, feel lighter and have more time to spend doing the things you love.
> You can live without
KITCHEN GADGETS You can get by with just one knife and one mixing bowl and there’s no need to keep every item you’ve ever owned. It’s time for The Big Cull and only keep what you use often. You don’t need any gadgets you haven’t used in the past few months, and if you never use your foodprocessor because it’s too hard to set up and clean, get rid of it. The best food is fresh and only requires your two hands and a few simple tools.
> You can live without
SPECIALISED CLEANING PRODUCTS You don’t need to buy many different bottles and potions to get each specific part of your home clean. Use home-made sprays made up with vinegar and lemon. Or add bi-carb soda to your sponge if you need to scrub something.

WEEKLY INTERIORS > You can live without
EXCESS TOWELS Not only do they take up storage area in your home, you don’t need 10 towels filling your cupboards. One set in current use and a spare set is all you’ll need.
> You can live without
TOP SHEET I’m still not convinced, but it seems to be very on trend. Why is that? Well it firstly saves money when buying new sheets, secondly it saves some washing time and thirdly it will save time making your bed in the morning.
> You can live without
CDS/DVDS/MAGAZINES A note pad, a couple of pens and a printer with paper is probably all you really need. Using online tools such as Evernote, or your Calendar can make working from home and running a home office very simple.

OFFICE SUPPLIES
> You can live without
TOYS
They occupy huge areas in your home and it’s time to get rid of them. Everything you need to watch, see or read is online. It’s fine to buy a hard copy here and there, but massive collections of these items take up precious wall or storage areas. There is no longer a need for bookshelves to clutter up much needed floor space.
Kids cannot play with all their toys all at once. This doesn’t mean you need to reduce the toys down to a bare minimum so they no longer own any, it just means a huge amount can probably be gifted to someone else or stored away and rotated in and out of your play area. Just because you own a lot of toys doesn’t mean every one of them needs to be out and lying around the house. Pick a few and then swap them around every few weeks with those you might have tucked away.

RE-VAMP YOUR
DECK
Y A D A IN
Is your deck looking a little worse for wear? Is it losing colour and looking grey and weathered? Then it is time to deck out your deck.
By Inspirations Paints Wagga
PLANNING Identify five days of fine weather because you want the deck to be done in one day. To help, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Intergrain and mapped out a bit of a timeline of how your Deck-In-A-Day project should develop.
7:00AM Remove Furniture If your deck is cluttered with stuff the first step will be to clear any obstructions out of the way. This could take some time but will save a lot of hassle in the long run. With elevated decks, do not store items underneath because the oil can drip through.
7:45AM Hose Down Deck After you’ve hosed the deck, use Intergrain Reviva to thoroughly clean the surface. This product takes away the greyness, even old colour, removes any greasy contaminants and kills mould. Hose down the deck again to wash off the Reviva and make sure the flow off doesn’t reach your favourite flowers because it will kill them. Try using a tarp or drop sheet to cover them.
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 11
WEEKLY INSPIRATION 8:15AM
1:30PM
Leave to dry thoroughly and break for breakfast
Apply second coat of Intergrain UltraDeck
PRO-TIP: Cover a small area of your deck with gladwrap. Hold down with heavy item on either end. Leave it for 20 minutes. If no moisture forms under the gladwrap in this time, you are ready to apply your first coat of Intergrain UltraDeck.
LEAVE TO DRY FOR FOUR HOURS Once dry – feel free to walk on your deck.
9:00AM Apply first coat of Intergrain UltraDeck Ultradeck is a high performance, water-based oil delivering an exceptionally durable, long lasting finish which will enhance the characteristics of the timber grain and weather naturally, without risk of cracking, blistering or peeling. Plan where you are going to start and finish applying the first coat so you don’t end up boxing yourself into a corner. Use a lambskin applicator attached to an extension pole to apply the decking oil to the timber in long even strokes. This will ensure you get the best, even coverage. In addition, you’ll save your knees and back which would be the case if you were using a brush or roller. LEAVE TO DRY FOR FOUR HOURS and enjoy a looong lunch. Four hours is the minimum time recommended between coats. This should give you time to check the cricket scores and go for a swim.
5:00PM Your deck is done Pop the cork on some sparkling or crack a beer to celebrate finishing your deck-done-in-a-day project. If you have any questions please call in and see us at 18 Dobney Avenue and speak to Allan, Tracy, Jenny, Dean or Rob. We are very happy to help.

WEEKLY GARDENING
Quivering
AUTUMN By pennie scott
It was the coolness of the early morning air which caught my attention, such a contrast to the sultry warm nights we’ve had for weeks. Not long before dawn, another blanket had to be found to maintain the warmth of body and bed. This is the start of the end of summer and the beginning of the transitionary period when daylight hours are fewer, bees are enjoying the flowers on the mint, clouds seem just a little bit thicker and I feel like a lizard – wanting to lie out in the sun to absorb these beautiful cosmics. Unseen to we humans, the stems of leaves on deciduous trees also are responding to the cooler night-time temperatures and, with
greater range between day and night degrees, callouses are forming at the base of the leaf, preparing for the shutting down for winter. In Wagga, there are many beautiful London plane trees, especially in Trail and Gurwood Streets, so, as you’re walking by, take a closer look at the leaves which are now falling. The size of the leaves is vast – pick one up and look closely at the physical structure of it, the spine and veins which transport the chlorophyll for months, and the mechanism for photosynthesisation. Each tree has thousands of leaves and, as they fall, provide another service to the natural world – that of mulch initially, fodder for fungi then when in microscopic size, food for the
millions of soil microbes living in and around the roots of the trees. When you see deciduous trees in their natural state, it’s easy to see the entire natural system of growth, leaf-fall, decay and nourishment of the biome. If you hear anyone claiming the leaves are a nuisance, offer to take them away for your garden immediately! If you have chooks, put them in their run and they will scratch the leaves into smaller pieces which hastens decomposition. By early summer, all this matter will be marvelous mulch for your vegie garden – decomposed leaves spiced with old chook manure and your worms will love you.
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 13
WEEKLY GARDENING
How wonderful it is to see children playing in the fallen leaves, throwing them above their heads and making cubbies in the raked piles. Make lacedtogether necklaces with them, arrange the leaves in bowls on your dining room table but DO NOT BURN THESE VALUABLE ASSETS – please. The leaves are carbon-rich remnants of spring and summer, designed to provide a blanket to protect cold soils over the winter. OK, our soils may not get as cold as the northern hemisphere, but the use of the fallen leaves is part of the tree’s majesty, existence and legacy. Love your leaves and your beautiful deciduous trees will provide shade and habitat for you and many other critters.

Investing in an
INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER By pennie scott Real estate is a fascinating sector with many influences able to cause upward, and downward, valuations of property. Principal of PRD Wagga, Simon Freemantle, is one of the share-holders in Wagga Weekly who bought in to take advantage of another option in the print media advertising space for real estate. “Until the weekly Riverina Real Estate guide, all agents had to advertise in Domain,” he said. “We had no choice.” “It’s fantastic to have an independent local newspaper reporting what is happening as we (who live) here see what’s happening instead of the usual metropolitan style of reporting which is all about sensationalism.”
PRINCIPAL OF PRD WAGGA, SIMON FREEMANTLE.
“As Wagga Weekly is independent, it is not pressured by anyone else telling it what it has and how to report so, here in Wagga, we read the stories as other people who live in Wagga understand them,” Simon said. And Simon’s forecast of Wagga is very positive, especially with the continuing development of the Bomen Industrial Centre. “The Intermodal hub at Bomen is one of the most significant projects and how that plays out over the next 10 years will have an impact on Wagga.

“The PRD State of Play report for the second quarter of 2018 is due to be released soon, providing a detailed analysis of activities, trends and outcomes for Wagga, with the future looking very bright,” Simon concluded.
“The NBN rollout has been laborious and slow in Wagga, but necessary for business to have access to the world as metropolitan cities do,” he explained.

“The Inland Rail Network between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane could be a game-changer for growth, and, one day, Wagga’s population could be 100,000. When at that size, the local economy will be much stronger and independent because it will be more self-sufficient.
