WHY YOU SHOULD
HIRE SOMEONE TO HELP YOU
Declutter By Katrina Chambers
Last week on TV, my husband saw someone wiping benches, sorting stuff and frantically vacuuming.
natural gene to get through all the clutter but you desperately want that organised home you’ve been longing for.
“Oh look, that’s you!” he said.
There are times in our lives when we realise we can’t do everything ourselves and maybe we need to ask someone to help. There are many reasons why we get overwhelmed in our homes – it could be after the birth of a baby, moving into a new home, a stressful job or the death of a loved one. It could be that you just don’t know where to start.
I laughed because, yes, I guess it was me! I don’t mind a spot of cleaning here and there, and sure, I complain about it too, but I don’t hate cleaning. Even better, I don’t mind having a good declutter. Over the years, I’ve written many posts about culling, organising and getting rid of bad energy and I’ve read stacks of books, online articles and watched a zillion American home shows like Clean House and Hoarders. You’re probably reading this thinking that’s all well and good, but I just can’t get my own home organised! What if you don’t have that
This is where I recommend you hire a professional organiser to help demonstrate how and what to declutter. They don’t have to take over your home entirely, maybe just nudge you in the right direction and give you a plan of attack.

WEEKLY INTERIORS
You will REGAIN CONTROL >Most people cannot afford to hire someone to organise their entire home in one go so find someone who will work on an hourly rate. Hire them for just a few hours to take them on a tour of your home and get a feel for what they can help you with. > Tell the organiser what you want to achieve, and they will be able to define those goals more clearly for you; they are an outsider looking in, so their view will be impartial. > Pick individual projects to focus on. Don’t ask the organiser to sort your entire home in one go because that’s overwhelming for both of you. Ask them to help you tackle one specific area at a time - maybe start with the kitchen. Once you’ve used a professional organiser, you may find yourself motivated to continue with the rest of your house by yourself! > They will give you expert advice on how to minimise clutter and provide strategies for immediate implementation. > They can then either formulate a personalised plan with step-by-step instructions for you to follow, or come back and assist you personally in achieving your goals.
MOST IMPORTANTLY Know how to give you a plan of attack and get you started! Clutter creates obstacles and change is impossible without direction. Getting someone in to help can free you of the chaos and stress around you and be life changing. Everyone’s home is different and each room needs its own personalised plan. A professional organiser knows how to effectively communicate this to you. They can help you create simple systems that will allow you to get on with more important things in your life.

WEEKLY INSPIRATION
IT’S GOING TO BE
ALL WHITE By Inspirations Paints Wagga
Take the guesswork out of choosing the right white for your home It’s house makeover time and you’re going clean and sleek and white colour schemes will always be classic. If you’re planning on painting your entire house, whites are a great choice because you will be less likely to grow tired of them. With a seemingly endless number of whites to choose from, the hardest part is choosing the most suitable white for your home. To help take some of the guess work out of the equation, here is some excellent advice on how to make the best selection for each area.
WHICH WHITE IS RIGHT? What works for one home may not work for another, so copying a friend’s scheme, or even one from a magazine or Pinterest can leave you disappointed because there are many factors which contribute to choosing ‘the right white’. According to Inspirations Paint Colour Consultant and Interior Designer, Alex Ace: “When selecting a white or neutral wall colour, you need to take into account the flooring, furniture, the style you want to create, as well as both the natural and artificial lighting in each area. Once all these factors have been taken into consideration and weighed up, you can then decide which white to choose.”
WARM VS COOL WHITES Broadly speaking, there are two types of whites - warm and cool, and these work most effectively with the choice of lighting in each room. Warm whites usually have either a yellow, brown or red undertone and work well in rooms which have a cool southern aspect because they impart a warmth and create a cosy atmosphere. Try Dulux Antique White U.S.A., Dulux Natural White and Berger Paper Stock Cool whites work well to tone down the warmth in rooms with northern light. According to Alex “the black or blue tint in these cool whites helps to neutralise that bright Australian northern light”. Try Dulux Lexicon Half, Dulux White on White and Berger Rhythm and Soul. Alex’s favourite white right now is Dulux Natural White as, she explains: “It suits an extensive range of architectural styles from traditional through to contemporary and, although it is technically a warm white, it’s adaptable to many colour palettes, even the modern cooler greys which are popular at the moment”.
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 11
WEEKLY INSPIRATION SELECTING YOUR FINAL PAINT COLOUR Before you commit to one colour, Inspirations Paint expert, Kath Haynes, suggests collecting a number of paint chips in hues which work for your lighting and décor situations. Once the colour options have been narrowed, the best tool to use is large hand painted colour samples called Brush-Out Boards to assist with final colour selection. “Brush-Out Boards are great because they allow you to move the colour sample around your home to position each colour under different lighting conditions and get a feel for the best shade before committing to painting the whole room,” Kath concluded.
IMPORTANCE OF LIGHTING Alex says “It’s important not to underestimate the impact of both natural and artificial light in a room. The appearance of the same colour throughout the whole house can alter dramatically from room to room simply because the room faces a different orientation, or one room has a cool light bulb while another may have a warm-tone light bulb”. This might mean selecting a different colour for your living areas to than in your bedrooms, depending on where they are located in your house, or changing your light globes to create the look you want. If you have any questions please call in and see us at 18 Dobney Avenue and speak to Allan, Tracy, Jenny, Dean or Rob. We are very happy to help.

WEEKLY GARDENING
Frost Protection
AND PREVENTION TIPS ABC TV’s Gardening Australia In spite of frosty conditions, it is possible to facilitate the survival of frost-sensitive plants during winter by preparing in advance. Microclimates, planting positions, frames with covers, seaweed solutions and products to strengthen cell walls are techniques which can be used. Knowing the action of freezing assists in the type/s of protection to apply to specific plants and areas of your garden. Frost forms when the ground temperature falls below zero and the moisture in the air freezes and settles. When water freezes it expands, posing a big problem for plant cells. Here is the technical stuff: ice crystals, which form during the freeze-thaw process, can cause cell membranes to rupture. Rapid freezing results
in ice crystal formation in the outer parts of cells causing the interior of the cells to expand and pushing against the plasma membrane until the cell bursts. While slow cooling allows water to leach out and reduce ice crystal formation, slow cooling still leads to cell rupture due to an imbalance in osmotic pressure.
them with a bit of protection,” explains Tino from Tasmania.
Presenters on ABC TV’s ‘Gardening Australia’, Sophie Thompson and Tino Carnevale, both live in frost-prone areas and have a wealth of experience to share about keeping their gardens protected and growing during frosty winters.
“You can build a bamboo cage with twine and some geofabric - a type of geotextile material that’s sometimes known as ‘fleece’ and cover individual plants or a whole garden bed. The best place to find geofabric is at a plumbing supply shop. You can use any material such as hessian or even an old shirt thrown over the plant if you know there’s going to be a frost. But don’t be tempted to use plastic; it doesn’t insulate well and your plants will still get damaged,” Tino explained.
“For many cool climate gardeners, frost is a recurring factor which can turn your precious plants into mush in a single strike, but it is possible to keep frost-tender plants alive over the winter period - you’ve just got to provide
“Another idea is to create a tube similar to a large tree-guard using some mesh and stakes. Fill it up with straw which acts like a doona and insulates the plant. The loose straw will also generate heat as it breaks down.”
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 13
WEEKLY GARDENING
Sophie Thompson from South Australia also has this practical advice: • In the lead-up to cold weather, water tender plants with a seaweedbased solution, which will help them develop an internal resistance to frost. Seaweed solution takes about a week to take effect if sprayed on the leaves, and two to three weeks if applied to the roots. • Biodegradable frost protection sprays work by creating a protective polymer film over the leaves and stems and Sophie sprays it on upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. These sprays are called ‘antitranspirants’ and also protect plants from drought, excess heat and sunburn. • Frost protection sprays are biodegradable so should be applied monthly during cold weather, after applying seaweed solution to ensure the seaweed solution gets taken up by the plant. • Use microclimates to protect vulnerable plants. • For these most special plants, wrap them in a protective cocoon. Draping frost cloth over small shrubs and trees and securing it to the ground with bricks or other weights traps heat which has collected in the soil during the day and releases it slowly at night, preventing frost formation. It can be left on for long periods, day and night, because it allows rain and about 70% of light through. So, there’s no need to despair with the onset of winter. Decide which plants you want to build shelters for, find materials you can repurpose and jump to it.

Quarter 1 - New South Wales
KEY MARKET INDICATORS
PRD Nationwide Research
AND THE AWARD FOR “MOST IMPROVED NUMBER OF FIRST HOME BUYER LOANS” GOES TO….NSW! New South Wales wins the “most improved number of first home buyer loans” award for the period of September quarter 2016-September quarter 2017, reporting an extraordinary growth of 70.9%. This is an unexpected result considering the comparative prices between Sydney and other capital cities, however it is an encouraging sign for the state as it shows that current land release and first home buyer policies are working. Furthermore NSW takes out the silver for the “highest number of first home buyer loans” for the September quarter 2017, registering 6775 first home buyer loans. As of June 2017 NSW’s nett migration figures is 14532 people, making it the 2nd highest state after Victoria (19562 people). Interestingly NSW
also holds second position in the number of dwelling approvals (as of December 2017) at 5284 approvals, which suggests that there is supply to meet demand. This is good news for NSW as it will further address affordability concerns, considering that NSW records the lowest home loan affordability index at 27.7 points, below the Australian average of 33.0 index points. Median family weekly income in NSW in September quarter 2017 is $1711/month, which is a 2.3% increase over the past 12 months. Coupled with the fact that NSW takes out the bronze in the lowest unemployment rate category (as of January 2018) – at 5.1% – this brings good news for its economy.
The PRDnationwide Q1 2018 Key Economic Indicators provide consumers with a quick snapshot of the current state of affairs from an economic and property perspective. The PRDnationwide Key Economic Indicators cover both national and state level data, comprising of: a) Number of loans to first home buyers b) Home loan affordability index c) Number of dwelling approvals d) Consumer sentiment index e) Standard variable loan f) Consumer price inflation index g) Unemployment rate h) Weekly family income i) Nett migration
