Investing in an
INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER By pennie scott Real estate is a fascinating sector with many influences able to cause upward, and downward, valuations of property. Principal of PRD Wagga, Simon Freemantle, is one of the share-holders in Wagga Weekly who bought in to take advantage of another option in the print media advertising space for real estate. “Until the weekly Riverina Real Estate guide, all agents had to advertise in Domain,” he said. “We had no choice.” “It’s fantastic to have an independent local newspaper reporting what is happening as we (who live) here see what’s happening instead of the usual metropolitan style of reporting which is all about sensationalism.”

“As Wagga Weekly is independent, it is not pressured by anyone else telling it what it has and how to report so, here in Wagga, we read the stories as other people who live in Wagga understand them,” Simon said. And Simon’s forecast of Wagga is very positive, especially with the continuing development of the Bomen Industrial Centre. “The Intermodal hub at Bomen is one of the most significant projects and how that plays out over the next 10 years will have an impact on Wagga. “The NBN rollout has been laborious and slow in Wagga, but necessary for business to have access to the world as metropolitan cities do,” he explained.

“The Inland Rail Network between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane could be a game-changer for growth, and, one day, Wagga’s population could be 100,000. When at that size, the local economy will be much stronger and independent because it will be more self-sufficient. “The PRD State of Play report for the second quarter of 2018 is due to be released soon, providing a detailed analysis of activities, trends and outcomes for Wagga, with the future looking very bright,” Simon concluded.

WEEKLY INSPIRATION
PAINTING & Styling
YOUR HALLWAY By Inspirations Paints Wagga
Painting a hallway can be tricky at the best of times because there are many aspects to consider. These include all the options based on what colour scheme to use, the application process, how the natural and artificial lighting both, effect the area and, any architectural features, just to name a few. These are important aspects to consider if you want to create an intriguing passageway through to your home. If you have any questions please call in and see us at 18 Dobney Avenue and speak to Allan, Tracy, Jenny, Dean or Rob. We are very happy to help.
Colour Selection The colour scheme you choose for your hallway will inspire a variety of visual and emotional feelings. Colour can generate illusions of a wider, taller, longer or more spacious hallway. Consider your home’s architectural features, the existing colour scheme and personal preference when choosing new colours for your hallway.
Size & Shape The size and shape of your hallway has a major impact on the paint colour you choose. If your corridor is small and compact, opt for a light colour, such as white, cream or a soft pastel to render the illusion of a larger space. Narrow passages can seem wider when you paint the ceiling a few shades darker than the walls.
Natural Light Dark paint colours tend to absorb light while light hues reflect light. If your hallway is lacking natural light select a pale tone such as a pristine white, smooth ivory or soft yellow to illuminate the space. Add cosiness to a corridor which is filled with abundant natural light by painting the walls in warm shades such as a creamy caramel, sage green or burnt orange. Medium greys, browns and tans offer neutral appeal with a more intimate feel in a light-filled passageway.
Impact Be bold! Produce the wow factor by painting your hallway in a vibrant colour. Electric greens, oranges, blues and yellows wake up a tired hallway with lively energy. These bright hues are well suited for an edgy and contemporary or hip beach-cottage style. Boost your hallway’s visual interest by painting the top two-thirds of the walls a lighter shade than the bottom third. A clever feature to make your hallway longer is to paint the walls a light neutral colour and make the end wall a feature colour, dark blues, browns or even a bright colour like turquoise will help draw the eye to the end of the hallway, creating the illusion of depth.
Brush-Out Boards If you’re still unsure or undecided on paint colours, why not try one of our brush out boards. These are real paints, hand painted on a large sturdy board with a texture similar to a painted wall. You can move them around your hallway testing the colour in different light and take them with you to choose fixtures and furnishings, saving time and messes, and making colour selections so easy.

REDESIGNING YOUR HALLWAY Preparation Prepare the area by laying a drop sheet and sticking painter’s tape along the skirting boards to avoid getting paint on them and to achieve a nice straight finish. Depending on the surface, apply an undercoat if needed.
Painting Cut-in along the skirting board using a Spitfire Angled Sash Cutter, then a Maverick Microfibre Roller and extension pole on the wall, loading up the roller with enough paint to ensure an even coverage. After waiting the recommended two hours, apply a second coat.
STYLING THE SPACE Entry Table Furniture can have a big impact on the space you’re adding it to, especially if you introduce colour or add a bold statement piece that will stand out. Upcycle furniture with a new colour scheme as a contrast to the walls. With so many different paint finishes available now, there are many options to consider. For a really smooth finish, use a mini-roller instead of a brush so no marks are obvious and the end result is silky smooth.
Add a photo frame Continue the upcycling theme and use the Dulux Duramax specialty range of spray paint finishes. Prop up an old bare timber photo frame in a well ventilated area and spray with Zinsser Cover Stain Undercoat-Sealer, allow the 30-minute drying time then gently spray the special effect paint in a continuous motion over the frame making sure not to miss any sides or angles. After only two minutes drying time, apply another coat and repeat until three coats. This product from Dulux is so easy to use, fast drying and delivers impressive effects ideal for refreshing both interior or exterior items, giving them a second life in your home.

Roses
FOR ALL REASONS By pennie scott
Spring and autumn are the prime times for roses to flower and, even though we’re now into May, with this warm weather and maybe a spot of rain, more blooms will adorn our gardens for a few more weeks.

According to fossil evidence, the rose is 35 million years old and the genus Rosa has around 150 species spread throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from Alaska to Mexico and including northern Africa. Garden cultivation of roses began some 5,000 years ago, probably in China.

Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America and north western Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are perfumed. Roses, in all their forms, are very versatile and really don’t require much attention at all. Roses are big business in floristry and have acquired cultural significance in many societies, especially for anniversaries, weddings and celebrations. In addition, they are just beautiful
beliefs, roses are seriously tough plants and can withstand rather brutal treatment. There are many occasions when cattle have busted into a country garden and trampled and eaten their way the major reactions however, once spring returns, new leaves bust through the skin and the blooms are more prolific than ever. Near Gundagai, there is a small farm growing thousands of roses for oil. The owner’s pruning regime is to let the cattle in for a couple of weeks after flowering and harvesting at the end of spring and this practice has been continued for 10 years. Roses can be propagated from tip cuttings in late summer so roots can develop before the onset of colder weather. Making a little hot-house over the pot with the cuttings by using a plastic bag supported on sticks works quite well as long as the soil doesn’t dry out; keep the pots in a semishaded area during really hot weather.
Nurseries love winter as this is when bare-rooted roses are the favourite way for many gardeners to acquire new stock. Gardeners can choose between climbers, ramblers, standards, bush, hybrids, tea, single and double flowering blooms, David Austin and ground covers. Roses need a position where they receive at least six hours of sun every day. They also need good drainage and plenty of organic matter in the soil. To minimise the risk of fungal diseases, ensure plenty of airflow around the roses as they don’t like to be crowded by other plants. To plant a bare-rooted rose, dig a wide hole that will easily accommodate the roots without bending them. Add some well-rotted compost or manure to the soil. Form a mound in the bottom of the planting hole and spread the roots over the mound. Adjust the height of the mound so the grafting point is level with the soil surface; fill the hole with soil and drench with seaweed solution to stimulate root development.

WEEKLY GARDENING
According to the Queensland Rose Society, you should NOT water for two weeks after planting. Roses are heavy feeders so fertilise frequently throughout the year. Little feeds often are more beneficial than huge amounts all at once and use an organic complete rose food, cow manure, Searle’s 5-in-1, or Healthy Earth fertiliser. Spray the foliage fortnightly with a liquid seaweed fertiliser to help prevent fungal diseases. Roses are pretty drought tolerant. As with many plants, a deep watering once a week is better than a light sprinkle every day, because it will force the roots down into the soil. Don’t go digging too much around your rose bushes – any deeper than 5cm may cause damage to the top-most roots. Search through online catalogues for your favourite roses then head to the independent nurseries to purchase them including Chaston Street Nursery, Wagga Wagga Nursery and the Garden Studio Nursery, Wagga. Things
EVERY STYLISH HOME
If you’re trying to identify your decorating style or maybe you’re starting off brand new, including these five items can get you started.
A FLOOR LAMP If you’re stuck on how to fill a corner just select and position a floor lamp and a plant and you’re done. They’ve become a must-have and a trend in living rooms because how the light is thrown creates a defined and cosy feel. There are hundreds of styles from which to choose as floor lamps differ in shapes and styles as well as how they diffuse light.
SHOULD HAVE By Katrina Chambers
PLANTS Indoor plants have almost become a decorating staple! Finding the right one can be tricky, but they are such a cheap addition to your decorating items. Not only do indoor plants look good they also have a purpose as they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. So, while we are sleeping, the plants are refreshing the air. (If all else fails, just buy a fakey!)
A STATEMENT RUG Gorgeous rugs are everywhere at the moment with patterns and styles changing from the typical shaggy solid colour to include a bit of Boho style or Moroccan patterns. The most popular feature colours right now are blue, grey and cream. If the colour of your furniture is subdued, a floor rug provides a colourful focus in the room, an easy way to uplift the personality.
A GALLERY WALL
COFFEE TABLE
Mirrors make any room feel bigger and brighter as they reflect light from windows which bounces all around the room making the space feel it’s bigger than it really is. The mirror will not only create more light but also adds to the illusion of greater depth and height to the room.
A great coffee table is important and, if you position the couches around the table correctly, you create the perfect space to gather and chat. Living spaces without a central coffee table tend to make the room too floaty without structure. Apart from literally placing cups and plates on the table, a collection of magazines or coffee-table books (the gorgeous picture-rich style) and a plant provide a delightful place to relax and read.
