Bringing back the
BUTLER’S PANTRY
By Katrina Chambers
In very grand houses when permanent staff were fixtures, the butler had his own pantry a service room between the kitchen and diningroom with storage for platters and serving bowls, crockery, cutlery, silver and glassware. Adjacent to the pantry was the scullery with
USES AND TIPS FOR YOUR BUTLER’S PANTRY:
its sink to wash dishes so they could be popped
>
It is a place to prepare food separate from the main kitchen area
back into their cupboards.
>
The butler’s pantry has absorbed the scullery and is an additional space to wash dishes after clearing the table (if you add a sink and dishwasher)
>
It’s a useful place to house day-to-day items including toasters, microwave, jugs, coffee machines and juicers, and even your vacuum cleaner
>
If it’s going to be an area for preparing food, make sure the lighting is over the benches
>
Incorporate lots of shelving, ensuring they go all the way to the ceiling
Butler’s pantries are hot again, because every floor plan I look at includes one to be the second kitchen hidden away from the ‘main’ kitchen. Over the years, the humble pantry, once a space for storing food, has expanded to include serious storage space and mine is full to the brim with school-bags, the deep freezer, microwave, fridge, toaster and food.
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 11
WEEKLY INTERIORS >
Spend more money on the main kitchen area and less on the butler’s pantry space by choosing materials such as laminate benches and cabinetry over stone benchtops, and build in shelves instead of drawers
>
Have lots of open shelving and use storage baskets and containers to keep your food visible
>
Use clear storage items such as glass jars and containers to quickly find what you’re looking for
>
Include power-points around the benches for your electrical items
>
Consider putting your fridge and other appliances in the pantry to keep your main kitchen area more streamlined
>
Store all big food display items such as platters and mixing bowls in the butler’s pantry
>
As a general guide, the width of the walk through should be at least 1000mm, then add another 600mm for the benchtops.
>
Include a sliding door so you can close it all off
>
Don’t forget additional plumbing if you’re installing a sink
>
Consider adding hooks/rails, chalkboard or whiteboard to write shopping lists, or hang school bags

WEEKLY INSPIRATION
FIVE Things to think about
BEFORE STARTING A
PAINT PROJECT By Inspirations Paints Wagga Here at Inspirations Paint, we love a paint project like a Labrador loves a chop. We get excited when people tell us about their projects, and love to share all our hints and tips to get your job completed. But before you start, there are a few ideas in the Do It Yourself journey we suggest you consider. If you have any questions please call in and see us at 18 Dobney Avenue and speak to Allan, Tracy, Jenny, Dean or Rob. We are very happy to help.
Think how the room being out of action is going to affect your day to day life A room can be out of action for in excess of a week by the time you properly prepare a room (sanding, repairs, cleaning) paint it and allow ample time for it to dry and cure before you begin to bring furniture back in and start using the room again.
Plan your furniture relocation As well as planning for the room being out of action, consider what you will do with your furniture while completing the project. If you don’t have another room in which to store it, head into your local Inspirations Paint store to purchase drop sheets. Move the furniture into the middle of the room which gives more space to paint and protects your furniture from any paint splatters.
Pack some bags Pack a week’s worth of essentials from that room, especially important when painting bedrooms. Whether you choose to leave your furniture in the room or relocate it, there is a chance that your belongings may not be easily accessible.
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 13
WEEKLY INSPIRATION Paint with no regrets When thinking about a painting project, it’s always the walls considered first, but think about refreshing your ceiling, skirting boards, door and window frames because it will save time and expense in the future. Do them all at once!
Prep a good playlist You’re going to be spending a lot of time staring at the same four walls over the course of your painting project so plan a playlist of your fave tunes, and dance like no one’s watching in your breaks. While our expert staff at your local Inspirations Paint store may not be able to move your furniture or suggest the best playlist, they have all the knowledge and advice to complete your painting project. Chat to our teams about the most appropriate tools for the project, colour selection and, of course, the best hints and tips to compete your paint project.
