How to
BUSTIN YOUR DUST HOME
By Katrina Chambers
We can’t avoid dust in our homes and it’s a painful job to keep on top of, but it’s unavoidable. Hey, we live in the Riverina! Dust accumulates on flat surfaces, floors, our beds, on ledges, walls and even mirrors. Recently, my sister-in-law had an allergy test and was told the culprit was dust. So she set about cleaning her house from top to bottom, vowing to keep it under control. For many, dust isn’t a problem, but considering it’s made up of skin cells, animal hair, dust mites and even faecal matter, it’s worth your attention. You can’t avoid dust, but you can keep it to a minimum and here are six ways you can.
VACUUM REGULARLY
Vacuuming removes dust more effectively than any other method simply because it physically sucks it out of your home while sweeping simply pushes dirt and dust around. If you have a good vacuum cleaner it will literally change your life! Use the attachments to vacuum skirting boards, flat surfaces and up high. And don’t forget to vacuum carpets more regularly than you think they need it because they hide dust very well. Vacuum your couches, blinds, exposed brick walls and anything with a surface which holds dust.
WASH THE BEDDING
We constantly shed millions of skin cells and our beds are a haven for dust mites and other gross things. Bedding needs to be regularly washed and hung in sunshine to dry, mattresses vacuumed and flipped, and beds pulled out and away from the wall for a thorough clean.
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 11
WEEKLY INTERIORS
DUST CORRECTLY
Don’t use a feather-duster because although they may claim to capture dust, they just flick it around. The best method is to use a slightly damp cloth and wipe surfaces. It’s better to remove the dust completely rather than just move it around. The fewer surfaces the less there is to dust so, if dust annoys you, maybe it’s time to get rid of excess furniture? Microfibre cleaning products are effective also because they attract and hold dust with an electrostatic charge. Simply rinse them clean under running water.
LEAVE THE SHOES OUTSIDE
Shoes are a transferable surface, so leave them outside altogether. They carry bacteria, dust and other particles. I keep some good shoes in my closet, but every other shoe my family owns stays in the garage stacked on a shelving system.
OPEN THE WINDOWS
Good ventilation is much better for our homes and respiratory systems than having windows tightly sealed. Clean up the dust first then open the windows and let the fresh air in. The exception is if there’s a dust storm! If you live in an area where dust just finds you, then air purifiers effectively removes large and small particles from the air in each room.
TAKE ‘EM OUTSIDE AND BEAT ‘EM
Take your floor rugs, throws, cushions, curtains and bedding outside for a good beating to release all the dust particles. I’ve thrown a rug over a swing set before and given it a blast with the high-pressure hose to clean and air it. Bash your cushions, flick your throw rugs around and leave them in fresh air for a few hours.

The art of
ESPALIER By pennie scott Espaliered trees are a very old art form, using a woody plant as the medium. Originally it included the actual frame on which the plant grew, but, these days, the plant can be freestanding. As a technique, espalier seems to have started with the ancient Romans and, by the Middle Ages, the Europeans refined it into an art form. The practice was popularly used in Europe to produce fruit inside castle courtyards with limited space, and to decorate solid walls by planting flattened trees near them. Vineyards have used the technique to train grape vine for hundreds , or perhaps even thousands, of years.
An old homestead near Boorowa has many espaliered pear trees against the walls, giving a multi-dimensional appearance to what could be bland flat spaces. An original purpose for espaliering fruit trees was to utilise the enduring heat in masonry walls to mitigate colder temperatures, thus lengthening the growing season for frost-sensitive species, a technique used at the Boorowa District homestead to grow the pears to their full potential.

There are many plant varieties suitable for espaliering, including the Japanese maple, all citrus species, loquat, figs, forsythia, crepe myrtle, magnolias, olives, stone-fruits, lily pilly, camellias, quinces, gardenias, junipers, photinia and vibernum species. and, as their branches grow, they are trained to intertwine and create an above-ground hedge effect. Willows are especially useful for this and, in winter, the framework of bare branches becomes a living work of art. Deciduous and evergreen species can be used. And think about the purpose of why you want to espalier – is it for decoration, production of food, as a fence or to provide a backdrop for a herbaceous border garden? Visit good old Pinterest for a plethora of ideas and how-to instructions. Excellent news is that there are many species including figs and willows which propagate easily from cuttings and can be planted directly where you want your espalier focus.
