Lockhart COMMUNITY LIFESTYLE

WITH CREATIVE PIZZAZ The Spirit of the Land resonates in Lockhart. A farming community of 1000 residents, the township is just a hop, step and jump away from three major centres - Wagga, Narrandera and Albury/Wodonga . Since the inaugural Spirit of the Land Festival 10 years ago, which also hosted Australia’s First National Farm sculpture award, the town has steadily grown. There are new residential subdivisions, lifestyle acreage, an expanding industrial park and expressions of creativity captured by artworks and an arts trail throughout the town. Held in October each year, the Festival attracts around 6000 visitors, and often is at the same time as the Lockhart Picnic Races. The Festival also won Lockhart preferred destination status by Tourism NSW and influenced development of residential properties; 20 new houses have recently been built in as many months. Once, most houses were valued at under $100,000, but prices now have increased, although still very attractive when compared to larger centres, or Melbourne and Sydney.

Lockhart Shire includes Lockhart, The Rock, Pleasant Hills and Yerong Creek with a population of around 3500. A totally selfsufficient community with two doctors, three banks, a local hospital, retirement units, an aged care hostel, two pubs, two clubs, cafes and shopping centre, Lockhart offers a lifestyle for families without the hustle (or expense) of the big smoke. Proud of its history, past and present families are commemorated in decorative paving stones under the historic verandahs. The Rotary and Lions clubs support exchange initiatives for overseas students at the Lockhart Central School. St Josephs primary is strongly supported also by local business, including Lockhart’s Bendigo community bank, which each year returns substantial funds to clubs and organisations as does the local IGA. The independent supermarket has been remodeled and substantially expanded under the entrepreneurship of the Matthews family. A monthly antique and collectables auction brings hundreds of buyers from around the Riverina, who also take advantage of ‘Ginger and Fluffs’ second-hand shop where shoppers

have been lost for hours. Add Intuition, a stylish boutique with wares from India, Marrakesh and other exotic Asian and Australian locations and Lockhart has lifestyle with pizzaz. Another significant attraction is the Vintage Truck and Commercial vehicle show, now in its 10th year and held every March. Green’s Gunyah Museum attracts with its unique art gallery of wool art by beloved local resident, Doris Golder. The new managers of the Commercial Hotel have updated the old pub with a stylish bistro and great entertainment. The Ex-Serviceman’s club, also under new management, has joined in the spirit of hospitality recently hosting Sydney Hot Shots and other regular entertainment. This Easter, the club is hosting a Chocolate and Seafood night, including a giant raffle. For more information Marie van Steyn 0429861244

WEEKLY INTERIORS

NOT ALL

WHITES

are equal By Katrina Chambers

Are you looking for a white paint but don’t know where to start? Yes, I’ve been there done that! When you ask online what’s your favourite white you’ll be bombarded with answers. If you head to a hardware

COOL WHITES Cool whites are colours with a blue, grey or green undertone and work well in modern and contemporary-style homes. Rooms with an abundance of natural light can benefit from a cool white as they create a crisp, sleek and elegant look.

shop and stand in front of the white samples you’ll probably start seeing stars – there’s just so many choices. Whites can throw all sorts of tones – grey, blue, purple and yellow. It’s tricky to get it right. The first thing you will need to decide on is whether you are after a COOL or a WARM white. Once you decide your preference you can start to refine your choices. Here are the two groups broken down with a few ideas for you…

Here are a few of my top cool colours Taubman’s Crisp White a true white and very popular. Dulux Lexicon Instagram will tell you this is very popular especially done in a quarter tint. British Paints Infinity White a gorgeous colour with a little hint of grey, but not too much. Dulux Vivid White bright and light. Sherwin-Williams Extra White looks great in a large space. Wattyl Manhattan Snow another bright and fresh white.

RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 9

WEEKLY INTERIORS WARM WHITES Warm whites are tinted with yellow, red and brown undertones and are well suited to traditional styling and architecture.

Here are a few of my top warm colours Dulux Whisper White A little bit warmer with a slight cream undertone. Wattyl Linen White Also a little creamer and looks great with bright white gloss accents. British Paints Love Note Creamy with the slightest pink tone. Dulux Antique White USA Not too creamy but not as stark as a cool white; this is my favourite warm white paint colour. Dulux Natural White Fresh brown undertone and wonderful with timber furniture. British Paints White Beam Natural and inviting.

Tips WHEN CHOOSING

WHITE PAINT

• Hold the swatch well away from different coloured swatches (other colours can throw it off). • Don’t choose your colour based on the swatch laying down – make sure it’s upright.

• Buy a piece of plaster board and paint that using your colour (don’t put more than one colour on a board, create new boards per colour) and rest them in your rooms to see how they look at different times of the day. • Think about the lighting in your room. Less light might mean your paint choice can be a little brighter/lighter or with half strength tint. • Think about the furniture in your room; black furniture looks better with a cooler colour and timber furniture may look better with a warmer white.

WEEKLY GARDENING

The good

VERANDAH LIFE By pennie scott

The Riverina has one of the most perfect climates for living outside - under the shade of a verandah. This iconic construction was once an integral part of the Australian architectural vernacular, but is rarely, if ever, seen in contemporary houses as the preference for airconditioning has changed living styles. My family home had a huge courtyard in the centre of the house – complete with lawn and garden – with wide verandahs off the courtyard from which the rooms were accessed. We literally spent nine months of the year in this protected outdoor space as the courtyard was screened with fly-wire. There wasn’t any artificial air-conditioning because cooling was created by breeze-ways designed to be just that with cool air moving

from the courtyard, through the rooms and out through the French doors protected by an external screened verandah. This was designing for the climate and conditions. The Middle East also is known for long periods of heat, and, when the architecture of the houses is investigated, again, the use of breezeways, shady areas and high ceilings provide natural ventilation and cooling systems, which are free. Decorating verandahs is limitless so take inspiration from Italian loggias, Turkish courtyards and Moroccan verandahs. Because these areas are so well utilised, the furnishings are carefully selected and usually colourful, natural fibres, comfortable and durable.

In hot weather, lush plants provide a sense of tropical coolness as well as another type of surface to attract interest. Plants can be in large pots and bamboo, monstera, ferns, aspidistra and ficus are all varieties which usually thrive on negligence. Verandahs are a perfect space to display all the quirky, un-matched and unusual furniture you’ve been accumulating, then transforming the entire area with bright colours in the pieces of furniture, cushions, light shades and throws. White is very cooling (see Katrina Chamber’s column Which is the Right White?) and is complementary to almost every colour scheme. Gain inspiration from the colours and patterns of Moroccan tiles.

RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 11

WEEKLY GARDENING

Grow a grapevine over the outside to create a greencave, complete with its own air-conditioning system as a breeze is cooled by the foliage, and dense shade tempers the sun on even the most scorching days. Use rugs and carpets on the floor for colour and texture, both visually and underfoot, and think of this space as another room, albeit without solid walls. Verandahs add monetary value to a house, but it’s being able to spend time outdoors, away from electronic screens which makes them ideal places for children to play on rainy days, enjoy a meal al fresco, read or even have an afternoon snooze while listening to the birds. Bliss.

WEEKLY INSPIRATION

Dulux

COLOUR TRENDS OF 2018

By Inspirations Paints Wagga The Dulux Colour Trends for 2018 allow for individual customisation and expression for home interiors, to help balance all aspects of our lives. We do this by balancing our work and play, spending time in our communities and being kind to ourselves, giving and taking, revisiting the old and being curious about the new. If you have any questions please call in and see us at 18 Dobney Avenue and speak to Allan, Tracy, Jenny, Dean or Rob. We are very happy to help.

ESSENTIAL Consumerism is no longer a status symbol as, no longer, are seeking perfection; instead, we are now looking to find meaning within. Adopting the Nordic philosophy to be present in the moment and appreciate the simple things in life, people are becoming increasingly considered to nurture their time, and personal connections to people and nature. The Essential palette takes its cues from the minimalist movement by only owning what you need and what makes you happy; as well as collaborative design to reduce waste. Imperfect finishes, uncomplicated design paired with interesting textures from new materials created from waste and by-product underpins this movement. Comprising soft, warm shades of leather, putty and cooler green-greys, Essential’s colours are calming and nurturing with stronger highlights of blues and terracotta.

RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 13

WEEKLY INSPIRATION ESCAPADE Everybody will be a tourist in 2018, a global citizen charting their global adventures on social media. The lines of luxury and affordability continue to blur, bringing people closer to their travel aspirations and dreams. Escapade’s style encapsulates luxury hotel experiences and the glamour of sun-drenched Brazil, Palm Springs and Miami which is playful, colourful and tropical. Patterns include geometric and diagonal lines mixed with summery botanical prints. Eighties furniture style is referenced through features of coloured glass and acrylic while being organic and block-shaped in form. The palette features saturated colour combinations from pale mint to deeper shapes of teal and blue. Pink hues create tonal schemes and black is used in small doses to punctuate the overall look.

KINSHIP A gentle revolution is underway. Social and political unrest continue to fill our newsfeeds and consciousness, where we are reducing engagement with ‘fake news’ and ‘click-bait’ headlines. Instead, we are looking to one another for truth and transparency. As a result, the notion of community is renewed, with folklore and old traditions revived, where we find the solution to our collective information overload and fatigue. Kinship celebrates cultural heritage in a contemporary way, taking inspiration from folklore details including tassels, patterns, fringing, stitching, embroidery and carving. The colour palette exudes warmth, mixing earthy and rich hues with cosy neutral shades.

REFLECT Intelligent innovation and smart technology have transformed and refined our standard of living, yet new connections are formed with the past when furniture classics are re-imagined in contemporary form. We balance our desire for rapid progress with an appreciation for our predecessors’ visions. The Reflect style has a hint of nostalgia, revisiting 1970’s glamour, 90’s swagger and the elegance from the 30’s and 50’s. The Reflect palette showcases rich colours to create moody schemes, focusing on greens and warm shades from pink to greyed-off purple hues, with avocado featuring as a highlight accent.
