industrial comprising 8.4 per cent to the value of approximately $5.3m. What does this actually mean? Economic activity with emphasis on the second word is translated as confidence as individuals, corporations and governments believe the future is secure and able to withstand any financial fibrillations.
The figures demonstrate the strong confidence from local and external investors into the future of Wagga, now and into the distant future. Residential developments in Wagga are many in the suburb of Lloyd West and the remainder in the city in Urana Street (18 lots), Spring Street subdivision (41 lots), Staunton Parkway (nine dwellings) and Spring Street Dwellings (nine dwellings) which will meet the demand for additional housing in the city. More information next week on the topic of investments into our city. Thanks to Simon Fremantle, Principal of PRDnationwide, 53 Fitzmaurice Street, Wagga.

Quality OF LIFE IN WAGGA WAGGA By pennie scott Yearning is an interesting word, not often heard these days yet, it is an emotion which influences decisionmaking in so many ways. Not very long ago, nearly everyone who lived in metropolitan areas had a country cousin, aunt, uncle or distant relatives with whom they’d spend at least one school holiday each year. Mention you live in the Riverina, and especially Wagga, and their memories will tumble out like a beer from the tap at Thirsty Crow brewery. These memories – of clear skies, lighting wood fires, home cooking, collecting eggs and fruit, mustering cattle and sheep, playing with pups and kittens, watching chickens hatch, mucking out stables, learning to drive in the farm’s paddock basher, cutting wood, swimming in dams and rivers, playing cards, gardening, hearing birds, lying on grass watching cloud patterns, yabbying, running for miles and saddling horses to ride for a day – lie deep, and fondly within many people. Contrast them with the realities of city-living, completely reliant on vehicles to go anywhere, adding at least half an hour to get somewhere due to traffic congestion, the need to lock
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 9
Don’t you just yearn to live here? up houses, cheek-by-jowl housing on ever decreasing block sizes and, did I mention the cost of living there? The median price for a house in Sydney is now $1million; the suburbs with the lowest median prices ($551,000) are located 40kms west of the CBD. The median price for a house in Wagga is $395,000 and weekly rental is $340/ week. When you compare your buying power between Metropolitan NSW and Wagga, new realities become possible. With the $54million purpose-designed Bomen Industrial Centre planned and built for the next 50+ years, industry and commerce in this centrally located inland city are here to stay, for a long time. Centrally located between Sydney and Melbourne and on the Sturt Highway to Adelaide, Wagga’s position as a strategic transport hub has, and is, enabling national and international companies to establish manufacturing, warehousing and distribution centres here.
Employment and entrepreneurial opportunities continue to expand with a vibrant university, Air Force and Army bases, contemporary retailing, provenienced food, wine and beer stores and markets, delicious café culture and dining experiences, tourism attractions and rural enterprises. Tourism is particularly interesting with the regions of Destination Riverina Murray spreading from the Hay plains in the west, to the Snowy mountains in the east, from the mighty River Murray in the south and the edge of the outback to the north at Carathool. Air, road and rail transport is reliable in to and out of Wagga so coming from anywhere or travelling too far away is easily done. Wagga really is the city for the 21st and 22nd centuries thanks to the explicit planning undertaken by civic authorities, educational institutions, Chamber of Business, Committee 4 Wagga and other visionaries who have called, and proudly call this beautiful city home. http://evocities.com.au/wagga-wagga/

WEEKLY GARDENING
Vertical PALLET
GARDENS By pennie scott
Designing gardens is great fun when you know what you want to achieve so looking at other people’s garden’s, trawling internet sites (yes, Pinterest is the best!) and visit the Wagga Library and its brilliant section on Gardening so, there’s no excuse for a lack of ideas. With cast-aside timber pallets readily available, the main raw material is free and your other tools include nails and a hammer or a staple-gun, shade cloth as backing, soil (make your own with aged compost and loam) or purchased potting mix. The final addition is, of course, plants of your choice. As vertical pallet gardens (VPG) occupy such little floor-space they can be positioned almost anywhere. A blank brick wall can be decorated in an hour or so with the addition of a VPG filled with luxuriant culinary herbs or strawberries. Keeping the plants well hydrated is the most critical factor so including high levels of humus from proper compost is critical. (Call Carbon Mate in Wagga for superior compost.) Watering slowly from the top is ideal to ensure your gravity-based irrigation water reaches all the plants in its journey to the bottom of the pallet. Growing salad greens is a snap as individual leaves are harvested instead of the entire plant being removed. A delicious mix is mizuna, oak, butter and iceberg lettuces, rocket, bok choy, spinach, basil, mint, oregano and coriander. Vertical Pallet gardens are an excellent project for children to grow their own foods and, miracles, once they actually grow greens, they will start eating them!

WEEKLY GARDENING By combining four pallets and joining them securely at the corners, the interior is a large repository for soil and compost for your plants to grow in. As the soil is the major source of nutrition for your plants, having the best material from the beginning provides greater assurance of success for your plants. This type of container is ideal for growing quite a large amount of fresh food in a small space and you could even have a small fruit tree in the centre. If you use botanic or chemical-free detergents and shampoos, save the water from your dishes, laundry and shower to water the garden. Now there are so many products on the market designed to be used in grey-water systems, re-using water is possible without damaging the soil microbes and communities. When providing supplementary nutrition (fertiliser) for your garden, select certified organic products if you’re buying something or, making your own compost is so easy. If you have some garden, simply bury your kitchen organic waste and, in a couple of weeks, you’ll have a thriving worm population. How they locate these in-ground delicatessens is one of Nature’s miracles but, find them they do. If you prefer to have a worm-farm, the castings and worm juice also are wonderful fertilisers. Just by using and re-using household items, you can have a thriving living edible garden which enhances your diet, wellbeing and the beauty of your surroundings.

WEEKLY INTERIORS
Ways to decorate with
INDOOR
Plants
By Katrina Chambers
HERE ARE 7 WAYS YOU CAN USE PLANTS TO DECORATE YOUR HOME > POTS ON A SHELF This is probably the most popular way of using a plant. Choose something of substantial size and place it in a corner near your couch. It instantly adds colour, height and texture to your room and if real, a source of oxygen. The bigger the plant the more luxurious your room will feel as it’s similar to bringing the outside in. If you don’t have a beautiful pot, put it in a wicker basket to add texture and hide the plastic.
> MINI TREES IN POTS For varying heights and appeal, add some mini topiary plants to cement pots. I am on the hunt for some of these as they look great!
> HANGING PLANTS They are all the rage now with foliage cascading down a shelf or hanging from a pot in the corner of a room. They bring a space to life by drawing your eye upwards and I’ve even seen some great fake vines which have tricked me in to thinking they are real.
> SIDEBOARD DISPLAY Grouped together and displayed on one side of a console really brings a room to life. For maximum impact you can include a couple of plants with varied heights in pots and/or vases of similar tones but not matching. Balance out your sideboard with a mirror, a stack of books, candles and a photo frame on the other side.
RIVERINA WEEKLY REAL ESTATE | PAGE 13
WEEKLY INTERIORS Plants always light up a room and provide a sense of ‘lush’ in any setting. As a decorating item, they made a big come-back in 2014 and now, in 2018, the trend continues. Thankfully, for those who do not have green thumbs or you’re concerned about looking after real plants, the array of faux foliage now available is fantastic and, because of the quality, they are almost undetectable as imitations.
> CLUSTERS This style is very easy to achieve and makes a perfect statement for a dining table centerpiece or coffee table vignette. All you need is two different pots (large and small) and a few different cacti. Easy! If you love monochrome styling, clusters with some coloured pots will bring just a little bit of pizzazz and contrast into your home.
> PLANT STAND Let your plant stand on its own pedestal as a feature. A “mother-inlaw’s tongue” is one of the hardiest plants you will find and gives good height to an awkward corner.
> PLANT BY THE COUCH This is probably the most popular way of styling a plant. Choose something of substantial size and place it in a corner near your couch. It instantly adds colour, height and texture to your room. The bigger the plant the more luxurious your room will feel. It’s like you’re bringing the outside in. Use a basket around the pot for added interest.

Each have different characteristics and when used externally, their long and short-term performances are affected in different ways. Let’s talk about oil-based paints and where it may or may not be advisable to use them. Areas where oil-based paints are used is where a hard-wearing coating is required such as Berger Jet Dry Paving Paint – ideal for driveways and garages. This paint also is perfect on handrails
and less environmentally friendly. High levels of solvent can cause headaches, nausea, skin irritation as well as asthma and respiratory illnesses in some people. Oil-based paints dry very hard and, over time, become brittle, chalky and flake which is why they do not perform well in exterior situations.
There is still a place for oil or solvent-based paints but, with high research and development into water-based products, they are much easier to use and more environmentally friendly. Next week we will give you some tips on when, where and why to use water-based paints.
