LONDON CRAFT WEEK

8 - 14 May

London Craft Week (LCW) returns for its ninth edition with a new programme of events taking place across the capital from 8-14 May 2023.

Bringing together the work of celebrated and emerging artists, makers and designers, the festival showcases the best of craftsmanship and creativity from around the world, spanning the fields of craft, art, design, luxury, fashion and accessories.

Through a programme of curated workshops, immersive experiences, pop-up stores and original exhibitions that champion specialist craftsmanship, LCW provides an insight into the latest developments in material innovation, treasured heritage techniques and the histories behind some of the world’s most intricate and beautiful objects. Unsung hero makers, artists and brands are celebrated alongside world-famous names.

Made possible through the support of its sponsors and partners such as Delvaux, dunhill and Serapian, the event will also see the first UK showcase of work by Loewe Craft Prize Winner 2022, Dahye Jeong at Cromwell Place; demonstrations from Chanel’s Métiers d’Arts (Master of Art) ateliers, such as Goossens and Maison Michel and a display of Dame Vivienne Westwood’s archive corsets and runway looks.

This year, LCW has focused on developing its programme of International Pavilions in 2023, sharing global perspectives and spotlighting exceptional artist-makers, studios and workshops. This year’s Pavilions include South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Austria; highlighting the festival’s ambition to present work previously unseen in London.

Coinciding with the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, LCW also features a series of events that explore the stories of craft behind the Coronation and the tradition of Royal patronage, working with and celebrating craftspeople in Britain. There will be a workshop and demonstration led by the Royal Mint’s hand engraver and behind-the-scenes atelier tours of Britain’s Royal Warrant Holders.

Elsewhere, the National Army Museum’s programming will celebrate their unique archive of British military uniforms. Visitors will be able to explore the craftsmanship of ceremonial dress with a behind-the- scenes look at the museum’s collection, and take part in Embroidering Identity: Goldwork, an embroidery course led by Hand & Lock.

Visitors will also be invited to the ateliers of Britain’s Royal Warrant-holders, including barbers and groomers Truefitt & Hill, hatmakers Lock & Co, cordwainers John Lobb and watch hatmaking demonstrations by Rachel Trevor Morgan, milliner to Her Majesty the late Queen.

Within Mayfair Design District, guests can discover a programme of events from designers, galleries and luxury car dealerships including Georg Jensen, Connolly London & Edward Barnsley Foundation, SEEDS at Mayfair Gallery, Begg x Co, Rolls-Royce, Jack Barclay Bentley, and Mint Gallery, who will present Italian designer, Mario Trimarchi’s, exquisite ‘Close to the Edge’ collection.

New for LCW 2023 is ‘Park Royal Design District’, one of the Mayor of London’s newest Creative Enterprise Zones. Nestled among industrial buildings, iconic factories and garages, visitors will find a rapidly growing collection of studios and workshops occupied by artists, crafters, makers and designers. This unique landscape has inspired a particularly eclectic mix of disciplines, from ceramics and leatherwork to sculpture and millinery. Many of the makers have taken inspiration from their industrial neighbours, using reclaimed materials and repurposed offcuts in their work, and incorporating innovative circular design solutions into their practice.

Further demonstrating this more considered, ‘circular’, approach to materials, Park Royal Design District will showcase makers from their studios who have sourced clay from local construction sites to create new works. In Knightsbridge, Anabela Chan, the first fine jewellery brand in the world to champion laboratory-grown gemstones with high jewellery design, will present her jewellery creations using recycled and refined aluminium drink cans from ocean and beach clean-ups.

Guy Salter, Chairman of London Craft Week said: “Our ninth London Craft Week builds on the post- Covid appetite for unique live experiences, which drove our record visitor numbers at last year’s festival, and celebrates unsung creative communities. That often hidden ecosystem of exceptional talent. Not just in London but from around the UK and the world. Reinforcing this is a glimpse behind the scenes of the Coronation and the work of another fascinating community of artisans and specialist crafts linked to the monarchy. More than ever this year, I hope we’re proof of London’s enduring international cultural pulling powerand a tangible demonstration of human ingenuity and diversity”.

Authenticity is at the heart of London Craft Week and the programme aims to attract a broad audience united in their appreciation of imagination, individuality, passion and skill. A curated programme of events across London allows visitors to create their own itinerary, meet the makers and gain access to exclusive exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops.

GIRARD-PERREGAUX astonmartin.com | girard-perregaux.com

The first time a Laureato has featured a green ceramic case and bracelet, this new launch is the latest collaboration between the Swiss Maison and British marque, two companies that have designed products that have stood the test of time.

While some of the materials used for these new co-branded watches may be ultra-modern, the essence of the inaugural Laureato has been respected. Offered in a choice of two case sizes (42mm and 38mm), each reference is a limited edition and thereby destined to remain a rare sight.

Sleek, contemporary and notably elegant, the design of the Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition encompasses some elements inspired by Aston Martin cars. Powerful engines, sleek contours and light weight construction are virtues synonymous with the British firm’s products. It is this latter trait which encouraged Girard-Perregaux.

Some of the finest luxury products are crafted with time-served hands. These scarce human skills, often amassed over many years, imbue an item with a distinctive character and an enduring quality. Both Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux operate within this

rarefied world of excellence, constructing rare objects that confer lasting appeal. In 2021, these two prestigious marques entered into a multi-year collaboration agreement and have since created a number of limited-edition, co-branded products.

Equipped with skeletonised ‘baton’ type hour and minute hands, both light and functional, the watch dial is presented in a cross-hatch design, a diamond-like pattern found on the ‘AM’ logo (1921-1926) as well as the quilted seats found in some of the car marque’s high-performance vehicles.

The new Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition respects the brands timeless elements but employs ultra-modern ceramic for the bracelet and case. This lightweight material comprises zirconium oxide and metallic oxides (the latter imbues the material with its distinctive green hue). The zirconium oxide selected by Girard-Perregaux is composed of an extremely fine powder, made of micro-beads, each measuring mere fractions of a micron in diameter (1 micron (μ) = 0.001mm). By using this specific grade of micro-bead, the structure of the bracelet and case exhibit a notably homogenous appearance.

This latter attribute allows the craftspeople at Girard-Perregaux to finish the ceramic components with a combination of polished and satin finished surfaces, an endearing characteristic common to all Laureato models.

The green ceramic components are particularly hard, up to seven times harder than steel, delivering incredible scratch resistance, a quality that will ensure the watch retains its showroom-fresh appearance for years to come.

Furthermore, ceramic is unaffected by changes in ambient temperature, it’s light, hypoallergenic and proves remarkably smooth, all factors that deliver extraordinary wearer comfort.

Both versions of the Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition are housed in a slender case. The 42mm model is fitted with the Calibre GP01800, while the 38mm version is equipped with the Calibre GP03300. Both in-house movements are self-winding and can be admired though a see- through case-back, personalised with the Aston Martin logo.

Consistent with the Maison’s reputation for making wonderful expressions of Haute Horlogerie, each movement is beautifully appointed. Circular graining features on the main plate, while other components are endowed with bevelling, mirror-polishing, satin finish, snailing, sunray finish and various engravings. The bridges are decorated with straight Côtes de Genève and the oscillating weight is embellished with circular Côtes de Genève. Lastly, the movements have a power reserve of at least 46 hours (38mm) and 54 hours (42mm).

Willy Breitling had built a name for himself as a maker of aircraft instrumentation and tool watches that met the functional needs of wartime. But the third-generation Breitling founder also dreamt of a time after the war, when utility would give way to unbridled optimism. With that future in mind, he designed a series of elegant chronographs and assigned them the best materials, the best finishings and the best calibers. He called his new line the Premier.

Reintroduced by Breitling in 2021, the Premier Heritage chronograph collection revived Willy’s dream of seeing the functional chronograph made undeniably elegant and infinitely wearable - in his words, “the unmistakable stamp of impeccable taste.” Today, the Swiss watchmaker adds six new references to the Premier assortment, all of them powered by the self-winding Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01.

“We are committed to preserving Willy Breitling’s bold vision of combining the precision of a professional tool watch with the sophistication of a modern dress watch,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “The Premier embodied the hopeful energy that emerged in the postwar era, and we are proud to continue that tradition with a modern-retro version for our times.”

Breitling’s specialty has always been the chronograph, and each of the brand’s three founding fathers had a role in shaping it. From the moment he started his business in 1884, Leon Breitling put his expertise into perfecting the pocket-watch timekeeper. His son Gaston introduced the first wrist-worn models that included an independent pusher at 2 o’clock. And his grandson Willy added the second pusher at 4 o’clock - establishing the form of the modern chronograph that is used across all of watchmaking today. Willy would then go on to take the family vision one step further, giving the chronograph style as well as function.

The new Premier B01 Chronograph 42 assortment also lives up to Willy Breitling’s uncompromising technical standards. The six models are powered by the self-winding Breitling Caliber 01, a manufacture movement designed for maximum precision, reliability, and functionality. First released in 2009, it is one of the most highly regarded chronograph movements in the industry. As with all of Breitling’s mechanical calibers, each one has achieved the rigorous COSC certification for accuracy within -4 and +6 seconds per day.

Just as grueling is Breitling’s own in-house 16-year-aging equivalent that includes shock testing (approx. 60,000 shocks at 500 G), crown testing (more than 100,000 crown winds), winding of the oscillating weight (3,456,000 weight turns) and chronograph pusher testing (approx. 5,840 start-stop-reset engagements).

The latest iteration of the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 found in the new Premier chronograph was redesigned in 2022

and features a trimmer profile and more compact oscillating weight that can be admired through the transparent sapphirecrystal caseback. The movement comes with a five-year warranty and provides an approximate 70-hour power reserve. In keeping with Willy’s desire to marry usability with elegance, the Premier now comes with a 100 m (10 bar) water resistance.

To create the design of the new Premier, Breitling preserved distinctive vintage-Premier design details, including the smooth fixed bezel, twin-register dial, streamlined rectangular pushers, and applied Arabic numerals. At 42 mm, the case diameter is slightly larger than the 40 mm found on the existing B09 (manual-wind) models. The tone-on-tone subdials with chronograph minutes at 3 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock lend a polished style, while new dial shades in salmon, blue, green, black, and cream add a contemporary twist to the stainless-steel models. A further variation in 18K red gold features a classic cream dial. The watches come on a choice of classic alligator leather strap or sleek 7-row metal bracelet. The launch of the new Premier B01 Chronograph 42 coincides with the publication of Premier Story, part three of the Watch Stories series that chronicles some of the world’s most celebrated timepieces.

Author Fred Mandelbaum, Breitling’s official brand historian and the world’s foremost Premier collector, guides readers through Willy Breitling’s ultimately successful (but often tumultuous) quest to take the humble chronograph out of the aircraft cockpit and onto the wrists of the world’s style-setters — a journey that began 80 years ago.

“As Breitling’s historian, I’ve been living the wildest dreams of any passionate collector,” says author Fred Mandelbaum. “For this book, I was granted unprecedented access to the Breitling company archives and, through Gregory Breitling, son of founding-father Willy Breitling, was privileged to gain access to the family collection of watches, documents, photographs, and a wealth of personal memories.”

Illustrated in exquisite photography, including rarely-beforeseen vintage watches, Premier Story not only provides an account of the Premier’s history, but also offers invaluable resources for collectors on how to authenticate vintage models, along with how to date pieces by hands- shape, logo, and serial number. A chapter on calibers reveals the evolution of the Premier movements from 1943 to 2023, with content connected by QR code to videos of the intricate mechanisms in action. Premier Story is a fascinating - and exceptionally practical - deep dive into one of history’s great watches.

The Boettger Automatic Limited Edition is finally back, with a specially curated production run of three unique and stunning colours reinvigorating this innovative line of performance dive watches. A unique tribute to a remarkable story of ingenuity, bravery and determination. Bernd Boettger (or Böttger) grew up in East Germany during the Cold War and is credited as the inventor of the Aqua Scooter.

Seeking to escape and reach freedom in the West, Boettger believed a seaborne escape would be his best chance of making it past an increasingly fortified border around East Germany. Using only what was available, Boettger fashioned a tiny one and a half horsepower gasoline engine from a bicycle with a snorkel delivering air to the machine. The exhaust ran into a container, which helped act as a float. He made a snorkel for himself - and incredibly using this untested, homemade contraption - set off on the cold waters of the Baltic on 8th September 1968.

Boettger succeeded, making it to Denmark on a journey that had taken him 15.5 miles. There was no test run. This prototype had to succeed, and it did. Driven by this desire and drive, Boettger challenged both his mind and body along with a solitary chance to make this escape happen. Boettger patented his design of the Aqua Scooter, which subsequently also provides inspiration for this limited-edition timepiece that echoes the creativity of its namesake.

This re-thinking of the traditional dive watch - from bezel to bracelet - has resulted in the most intriguing timepiece of the Spinnaker lineup. The lugless case is designed and constructed to flow seamlessly to the bracelet. Built sturdily, it features a scratch resistant sapphire lens topping the case. The bezel is slim but carved carefully to offer a satisfactory grip for the user. Powering the timepiece is the reputable 24 Jewel, 28,800 Bph Miyota 9015 self-winding automatic movement with 42 hours of power reserve that is dependable, reliable, and precise. Constructed for utility and ergonomics, the case offers 300m of water resistance with a surprisingly slim profile for an always comfortable wear.

Available in three colours, each watch is only produced to a limited edition run of 630 or less uniquely numbered pieces and is available for purchase on 7th April. Priced at £710.00.

The TYPE 8, the purest expression of design from Ressence, expands its colour palette with the launch of a Sage Green dial.

This soft, elegant, and highly versatile green instils a sense of optimism and serenity to the lightweight all-titanium timepiece. This new colour addition further refines the sixth and latest watch type of the Ressence family collection and perfectly complements the existing TYPE 8 Cobalt Blue.

With its deceptively simple aesthetic, the TYPE 8 is designed for ergonomic comfort. Focusing on the most essential indications being the hours and the minutes, price-wise, it forms the entry level range of the brand.

Benoît Mintiens, Founder of Ressence, said: “The TYPE 8 is the purest, most essential of all Ressence experiences. You cannot possibly subtract anything more from it. To maximise legibility, its dial has been reduced to its most viable minimum.”

Asked about his perspective on colour, Benoît Mintiens added: “Colour is a part of our universal human language that reaches beyond time and culture. Colour triggers our emotions and affects how we experience the world around us. Awakening senses is key to Ressence, and colour certainly plays a part in this endeavour.”

Graphically simplified to the essence, the watch indicates only the hours and minutes, and with no text or numbers, the domed Sage Green dial has been reduced to its essence. Simple white

baton markers present the time with perfect clarity from any angle thanks to the revolutionary Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) display, whereby the dial itself comprises rotating discs set into the same plane.

The hands, the hour and minute scales are picked out in SuperLuminova® for low-light legibility. As with all Ressence watches, the dial of the Type 8 eschews traditional notions of centrally- mounted hands. Instead, the main dial, a domed piece of titanium, rotates to indicate the minutes. Set within it on the same plane, a smaller dial rotates to mark the hours. Thus the entire dial is ever- changing, but still presents an intuitive at-aglance display, legible from any angle.

The lightest of all Ressence watches, strap included, the watch weighs just a mere 42 grams. Crafted from a feather-light grade five Titanium, the 42.9 mm sleek case fits so comfortably on the wrist, inducing a long-lasting love affair.

In keeping with Ressence’s previous designs and the brand’s founding principle of ergonomic utility, the TYPE 8 removed the traditional crown on either sides of the case that marks the watch out as left- or right-handed. This unique ambidextrous design makes for a comfortable experience on all wrists.

The TYPE 8 will be available in both finishes worldwide from early May via Ressence’s official retailers network.

The iconic Piaget Polo reaches unprecedented heights in 2023 with the Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-thin powered by the 1255P caliber.

This stunning new model showcases one of watchmaking’s most emblematic complications, evocatively complemented by a moonphase display.

Adored and worn by influential figures including Ursula Andress, Roger Moore, Andy Warhol and Bjorn Borg, this stand-out-from-the-crowd unisex icon in gold or steel radiates a singular character and an unmistakable aura of distinction that resonates with the Piaget spirit of shared joy, sophistication and extravaganza.

Yves Piaget’s numerous travels helped him sense the momentum of the American market and its appetite for luxury sports watches. Piaget was thus primed to overturn industry conventions by offering a sporty and relaxed approach to round- the-clock watchmaking elegance that took the U.S. by storm.

Now, for the first time, the Piaget Polo welcomes a mechanical perpetual calendar - an emblematic complication in which Piaget has developed considerable expertise already deployed in some of its other watch lines.

Designed to advance the day, date, and year until the year 2100 - months, moon phases and leap- year cycle - perpetual calendar watches naturally appeal to a demanding and discerning audience, people in the know who appreciate the sum of haute horlogerie savoir faire embodied in such models.

Piaget has built its reputation first in the development and manufacturing of ultra-thin components and then in the development of ultra-thin movements. Combining watchmaking prowess, high- precision design and daring creativity, the in-house 12P movement launched in 1960 was the thinnest in the world because it drew on the idea of using a micro-rotor to ensure its ultra-thinness. Fifty years later, this caliber in turn gave rise to the new generation of 1200P caliber.

For Piaget’s new 1255P ultra-thin 4 mm caliber, the Manufacture drew on the ultra-thin 1200P caliber with its extremely slimness and proven reliability, while adding an additional Perpetual Calendar with moon-phase mechanism. At just 8.65 mm thick overall, the new 42mm Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin brings the universe to the wrist while retaining the joyful highlife vibe flaunted by this fabulously festive and colourful collection.

Featuring a dark emerald-green dial with a gadroon pattern and three subdials for the date, month (along with leap-year indication) and weekday at 9, 12 and 3 o’clock, along with the moonphase indication at 6 o’clock, the timepiece is true to Piaget tradition, with the subdials incorporating several finishes, adding visual richness as the light plays across them, along with SuperLuminova® indexes.

While retaining the gadroons that have been part of the Piaget Polo signature since 1979 on both the case, the aesthetic link between the newgen Piaget Polo and its predecessors is reinforced by the reappearance of the gadroons on the bracelet.

Other enhancements relate to a brand-new interchangeable SingleTouch system for the bracelet, as the model comes with a comfortable rubber strap alternative - echoing the gadroon pattern on the dial - that easily yet securely diversifies the wearability options.

Whatever the place, whatever the moment, while remaining true to its effortless distinction, Piaget Polo is an invitation to liberate one’s versatility and self-expression, igniting a unique ability to fit in yet stand out.

The Geneva-based watchmaker Raymond Weil has unveiled its latest timepiece, the freelancer Worldtimer. Capable of displaying the prevailing hour in 24 time zones at the same time, this new watch is ideal for wearers who juggle life in different regions of the world.

The new freelancer GMT Worldtimer is 40.5mm in diameter and has a thickness of 9.7mm, a modest figure considering the complexity housed within. Designed for intrepid explorers, business travellers and individuals who skilfully balance their life in different parts of the world, this model allows the wearer to view 24 time zones simultaneously.

Despite its complexity, the model remains slim, courtesy of a new self-winding movement, the Calibre RW3230 - a Swiss automatic movement with a power reserve of 50 hours. Equipped with a rotating track, marked with one prominent city for each time zone, the city disc sits adjacent a 24-hour scale, indicating the relevant hour in the location shown and whether it is day/night.

Barrel-shaped hour and minute hands indicate the ‘local time’, while to display the local time for the current location, the wearer simply rotates the crown at 4 o’clock, positioning the name of the local city adjacent to the prevailing hour. In addition to displaying the local time for the current location, the city disc simultaneously shows the relevant hour for each of the remaining 23 time zones.

A black GMT hand, featuring a prominent triangular red and white tip, indicates the prevailing hour at home, while a highly legible lollipop hand completes the set of hands.

Available in two versions, one with a black dial and the other

with a green dial, the black dial is paired with a stainless steel case coated with black DLC, a shade that exhibits an understated character while appearing eminently sophisticated. In contrast, the green dial option features a stainless steel case, but in this instance it is matched with a bronze bezel and two bronze crowns.

Bronze is an interesting alloy that acquires an attractive patina with time. This model proves a stylish exemplar of military chic with its khaki tones and bronze accents, making it the perfect timepiece for adventurous types.

While the two watches exhibit different characters, they both incorporate gradient dial tones. The progression from dark to light not only heightens the visual allure of each dial option, but also serves as a means of indicating the transition from day to night. In terms of wearing the watch at night, readability is assured. The hands and indexes are treated with Super-LumiNova®, emitting either a blue or green glow depending on their functional role. In isolation, these refinements may seem subtle, but when viewed collectively they enrich the ownership experience.

In keeping with Raymond Weil's esteemed reputation for quality, the lower part of the bridges is adorned with perlage, the barrel cover is snailed and the top part of the bridges and oscillating mass are embellished with Côtes de Genève motif. Purists will be pleased to learn that the movement can be admired at close quarters, courtesy of the model’s exhibition case back.

Each timepiece comes supplied on a colour-coordinated calf leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a folding clasp, featuring a double push-security system.

THE ALTERNATIVE FACIALIST

It was whilst working as a fashion stylist that Justine Masters suddenly started to experience hot flushes, exhaustion, acne and felt that her skin had aged overnight. As she was in her late forties, she realised that it could be the start of the perimenopause. Her research into the possible effects it could have on her body and skin lead her to try and find a menopausal skin expert who could advise and treat all the conditions that she was experiencing. When she was unable to find anyone, she decided to take matters into her own hands and began to train as a holistic facialist. Her unique approach which involves looking inwards to treat external problems and seeking out the root causes of skin conditions sets her apart from other facialists and makes her a truly unique practitioner.

Determined to champion skin health and pro-aging as a skin therapist and healer, Justine set up as The Alternative Facialist. Through years of client consultations and personal experience, Justine noticed that often skin complaints were caused from imbalances within the body and mind, and treatment protocols needed to be individualised. So, “Great skin starts from within” became the guiding principle of Justine’s holistic approach.

Always on a daily quest for new information, Justine is constantly learning and trialling in order to bring the very best in knowledge, technique and product. All treatments begin with an

expert consultation to customise your plan which always comprises of external and internal therapeutic solutions.

Her bespoke, holistic facials focus on healing the skin from a mind, gut and skin perspective so that the root cause of concern is targeted and the very best results can be achieved. She looks at hormones, diet, sleep and the nervous system to assess your skin combined with skin mapping and she goes far deeper than the usual facial. After assessing your specific skin type, she then customises a unique treatment to address a range of things that may be noticed such as ageing, scarring, dryness, dehydration, redness, reactive/sensitivity, and pigmentation to name but a few.

Justine also provides specific facials for topics such as acne, menopause, etc and uses a mix of techniques such as facial massage, Gua Sha, Reiki, Lymphatic drainage, Micro needling, Radio Frequency, Oxygen, LED, plus top-quality skincare products to suit you.

Afterwards, clients are provided with a bespoke protocol based on the assessment and facial to continue to achieve the best results at home. It aims to educate clients on what works best for their unique skin type so that optimal skin health is achieved and sustained.

Justine Masters is based in London at 58 South Moulton Street and Triyoga Ealing and Shoreditch. Prices start from £150.

THE ZETTER TOWNHOUSE

Part of the The Zetter Hotels & Co Collection who are recognised for exclusivity, excellence, and effervescence within the luxury boutique hotel industry, The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell is an independently owned, 13 bedroom Georgian Townhouse Hotel with an award winning cocktail lounge.

Beyond the heavy door, the unique and eclectic decor of Wilhelmina's cocktail lounge awaits. But who is Wilhelmina you may ask?

Wilhelmina Zetter lived in Clerkenwell all her life. Born in 1727 to a well-to-do family and proud owners of The Zetter Warehouse in Clerkenwell, they dealt in spice accumulated from their travels all over globe. The warehouse was positioned just a stones throw away, across the historic St Johns square from their family home, The Zetter Townhouse.

On the death of her parents, Wilhelmina inherited the family’s wealth and property and with no other family in London, aside from her troubled Nephew Seymour, Wilhelmina spent her time

travelling the world and sourcing treasures from her adventures. When she returned home to London she would fill her house with dinner parties in her Dining room followed by late night soirees in her Games room.

With all the gambling, cocktails and rendezvous filling Wilhelmina’s life and her residence, it’s no surprise that she quickly became known for her love of a tipple or two, something her and her Nephew Seymour had in common.

As the years passed by and the parties subdued, Wilhelmina having not spared the time to marry or have children in her youth found herself slightly alone. An old lady that resided just a few roads away, Jane Lawson, quickly became her closest companion. Unlike Wilhelmina, Jane had found love and married, only to be windowed at just 26 years old on her wedding day. Jane never bathed, never changed her clothes, and most memorably always drank the same tea come rain or shine, until the day she died. It is said that Jane Lawson was in fact Charles Dickens inspiration for Mrs Havisham in great expectations. Lady Jane Lawson died a few days after Wilhelmina Zetter. Some say it was the death of her only friend that brought on her death.

The Zetter Townhouse, 49-50 St John's Square, London EC1V 4JJ

THE ZETTER TOWNHOUSE
Located in the City not far from Farringdon or Smithfields market, The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell is a boutique hotel with a difference.

On the death of his adored aunt, in 1816 at the age of 89, Seymour inherited Wilhelmina’s house and assets. After being corrupted by his eccentric aunt his hobbies included gambling, horses, drinking and beautiful women, but his love above all else was art. He was very much a dandy, a Renaissance man, who loved to live, and after just a few short years of inheriting Wilhelmina’s fortune he was forced to downsize and purchased a smaller Townhouse in the west end of London on Seymour Street.

As he aged away from the soft, playful nature of his beloved Aunt, Seymour developed a wicked temper only diluted by his love of nature and watercolour that can still be seen in his Marylebone Townhouse today.

With crisp white sheets, sumptuous beds, and The White Company toiletries, the 13 rooms all boast modern luxuries with quirky furnishings. From the perfectly sized Deluxe Doubles, to the colourful rooftop Junior Suite - complete with a striking in-room alcove bath - there is a room for all tastes and budgets. The stunning apartment boasts views across the historical St John's Square, all the way across to The Shard and makes for the perfect setting for brides-to-be getting ready for their big day at the townhouse.

The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell has a wedding licence in place and can offer ceremonies for up to 50 guests. A truly unique venue, there is a choice of beautiful spaces to suit all wedding party sizes, should you envisage an intimate celebration or a bigger reception. The Dining Room seats up to 12 guests for dinner, the spacious Games Room can have 36 people in Banqueting Style, or 50 for a cocktail reception, or you can even hire the Townhouse exclusively and have up to 120 guests to celebrate.

The innovative recipes for the house cocktails are not only as eclectic as the trinkets adorning the shelves, but also pay homage to the area’s distilling heritage. Old recipes for tinctures, bitters and

herbal remedies have inspired not only the cocktails but also the homemade cordials and infusions that sit behind the apothecarystyle counter. Highlights include the signature 'Plum Sour' with salted plum vodka, verjus, plum wine and umeshu; and the 'Twinkle' - vodka, elderflower cordial and champagne.

A host of small plates and wide range of spirits are also available, alongside a room service dining menu and a hearty breakfast. Choose from a classic full English or Wild mushrooms with smoked ricotta and brioche; or even Eggs Royale with two poached eggs, toasted English muffin, Lambton & Jackson smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce.

Small but perfectly formed with beautiful original building character, The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell is your ideal home away from home in the city.

Elisir d’Elicriso

expertise to create a cocktail with a strong narrative from the Tuscan roots he shares with the House. Nodding to the aromatic gardens of Tuscany, Elisir d’Elicriso is the perfect celebration of Italy.

Elisir d’Elicriso has a rich, herbal, and round profile coming from Mediterranean botanicals and apothecary herbs of the Tuscan coast, blended with vetiver, and the essential oil “Elicriso” (helichrysum italicum) - from which the cocktail takes its distinctive name. A preponderance of vermouth and plant-based liqueurs, such as Podere Santa Bianca Liquore no.4 and the Vetiver liqueur, are combined with London Dry Gin, white balsamic vinegar, and a touch of Tenuta San Guido wine, which adds freshness, complexity, and a slight acidity to balance the herbaceous profile of the drink. Helichrysum essential oil contributes to the characteristic botanical aroma as well as to the viscosity of the cocktail. The cocktail can be served in a number of ways according to personal taste - thus reflecting Bargiani’s dedication to personalised cocktail experiences. It can be enjoyed as-is in a cooled Martini cocktail glass, or chilled on the rocks, as a spritz-style cocktail adding bubbles for a refreshing and sparkling cocktail, or as a long drink by adding soda or tonic water.

Test the temperature and if no hotter than lukewarm, stir in the yeast. Make a well in the middle of the flour and pour in the milk and yeast mixture. Using your hands, mix together to form a wet dough. Turn onto a surface dusted with flour and knead for 10 minutes or so until the dough is smooth.

Gently roll out the dough to about 2 cm thick. Sprinkle over the currants, sultanas and mixed peel and knead again until evenly distributed through the dough. Shape into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl. Cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.

Turn the dough out onto the floured worktop again and knock back by pressing down with the flat of your hand a few times to even out the bubbles of air. Divide into 12 even pieces and shape into buns before placing on a lightly greased baking sheet. Cover with a clean tea towel and prove again until doubled in size. Brush the buns with the beaten egg and preheat the oven to 210°C.

To make the paste for the crosses, mix the flour, water and oil together in a bowl until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a medium plain nozzle. When the buns have doubled in size, pipe the paste mixture onto the top of each to form a cross. Then bake in the top section of the oven for 15–20 minutes until golden.

While the buns are baking, make the glaze. Place the sugar, lemon juice, golden syrup and water in a pan and bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.

When baked, remove the buns from the oven and while still warm, brush the tops with the glaze. Leave to cool on a wire rack. Remember to leave enough time to prove the dough which is essential for a light, fluffy bun. They are best served warm with our Organic Butter.

Like a risotto, chop the white onion and dice the artichokes. Sweat the two elements together without coloring, then add the rice to make it pearly and finally moisten with the white stock. Cook for 15 minutes to keep the rice crisp. When serving, sift a large stewpot with 60g of rice and brown it.

Turn the artichokes and cut them into quarters, then start cooking in oil without coloring, adding salt, garlic and thyme. Deglaze with white wine and cook for 10 minutes in a white stock, covered. Once cooked, put the quarters on the grill to give them a smoky side.

Grill the red pepper in the oven. Roast the tomatoes on a baking tray. Roast the almonds and hazelnuts. Blend all the ingredients.

50g Rocket | 5g Shallot Vinegar | Salt & Pepper |

Blend everything except the oil. Gradually add the oil (like for the preparation of a pesto).

CHAI WU

A hidden gem of the fifth floor of Harrods', Chai Wu is a modern Chinese restaurant where creativity and high quality reign supreme.

Offering diners haute Asian cuisine in elegant settings, Chai Wu’s menu is a meeting of time-honoured and unconventional dishes produced in an open kitchen and served alongside the world class service that is so synonymous with its home, Harrods.

Paying homage to the five elements that are woven through Chinese philosophy and culture - wood, fire, earth, metal and water - the elegant restaurant blends together dark, polished wood with neutral tones and sumptuous textures. Atmospheric lighting creates the perfect setting.

2022 saw an internal expansion, doubling the space to 136 covers and adding a second, more intimate private dining space. Suitable for all occasions; the new semi-private dining room seats up to eight and is decorated with traditional Chinese art, including a serene scene of cranes hand painted onto raw fabric.

Renowned for serving some of the finest ingredients in the world, Chai Wu has a particular focus on sourcing incredible beef and seafood, including giant Alaskan crab and Kobe beef. The a la carte menu boasts a wide variety of dishes that are elegantly presented with a theatrical twist offering diners a truly memorable experience.

Highlights include deep fried coconut prawns; crunchy sweet and sour chicken inside a carved dragon fruit - the fruit makes for an unusual but refreshing pairing; Chai Wu fried rice with prawns,

scallops and fresh vegetables; and fluffy Wagyu puffs topped with gold leaf.

Sushi lovers should try the Harrods special roll of fresh snow crab, avocado and spicy mayonnaise, topped with seared scallops, orange and black caviar and spring onion. While the steamed dim sum platter is also a fantastic display of the restaurant's handcrafted dim sum offering with the likes of lobster topped with caviar, prawn and black truffle, and crystal sea bass with gold leaf.

The classic Beijing duck is a much-loved signature dish and has been on the menu ever since Chai Wu opened. Served with pancakes, the duck is sliced table side, skin shining and crisp and the roasted meat tender beneath. Alongside the classic accoutrements of hoisin and greens, the duck also comes with minced garlic in truffle oil, and a fine, vanilla-scented sugar for dipping the crisp skin into.

The stir fried Lobster noodles with ginger and spring onions can be customised with either Shanghai fresh noodles or crispy egg noodles and comes with wonderfully sweet, generous chunks of buttery lobster.

As you would expect, the drinks offering is just as impressive, boasting innovative cocktails bursting with exotic fruits and fragrant botanicals, and monthly changing specials sitting alongside an encompassing wine list.

Whiskies are celebrated, and the bar is well stocked with rare spirits, including limited Johnny Walker bottles and Louis XIII. This is luxury Asian dining at its best.

CHAMPAGNE A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Every 22nd April, people from around the world come together to advance sustainability and climate action in commemoration of Earth Day. As such, this month the Bureau du Champagne UK shares the ways in which Champagne growers and houses are heavily investing in sustainable practices

to safeguard the region’s future with strict targets. In 2003, Champagne was the first wine region to assess its carbon footprint and today it is accelerating the implementation of its carbon plan alongside initiatives to support the sector towards net-zero carbon by 2050.

To find out more about Champagne visit champagne.fr or enrol at champagne-mooc.com

COMITÉ CHAMPAGNE

Importantly, Champagne only comes from Champagne so, the preservation of this one-of-a-kind terroir is of primary importance. With a dual climate influence (a feature that is unique to Champagne and not found in any other French wine making regions), the vineyards are subject to both continental and oceanic influences. Oceanic influence produces the mild temperatures that are neither too hot nor too cold. The continental influence causes the sporadic freezing winter temperatures and rising summer temperatures that directly impact the subtle balance between acidity and sugar levels – this is pivotal in Champagne production. However, with global temperatures rising, the 16,200 growers, 130 cooperatives and 370 Champagne houses are having to collectively take action to prevent this delicate balance being put at risk.

What is being done to preserve this balance?

Ensuring the longevity of the Champagne region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, requires action. This action is already in full force and since 2003, Champagne has achieved significant progress with a reduction of carbon footprint by 20 percent per bottle, 100% treatment of wine effluents, the recycling of 90 percent of industrial waste; and the region is the leader of Europe’s wine regions in developing mating disruption - this is an environmentally friendly technique to help control insect pests contributing to the unique flora and fauna of the region.

The Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC) initiative, introduced in 2014, is the culmination of collective efforts which began more than two decades ago. The aim of the initiative is as

follows: to better manage the use of additions to the soil, to protect and promote the terroir, biodiversity and vineyards and practise responsible management of water, effluents, by-products and waste in order to reduce the carbon footprint of the industry. As of 2022, 69 percent of vineyards in the appellation have secured environmental certification with 46 percent of cases holding the VDC certification - that is 23,600 hectares of land with the Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne certification.

The future of Champagne

In order to protect one of the oldest and most celebrated wine regions in the world whilst still preserving the quality of Champagne, there have been progressive targets put in place that encompass the region’s ecological footprint and the impact that the cultivation and harvesting of grapes has on climate change.

There has been a substantial amount of grape varietal research taking place to deal with the effects of climate change, as well as research going into new techniques to combat the various forms of decline in the vineyards: defining new soil maintenance protocols and implementing new oenological strategies to anticipate the effects of climate change while also meeting the requirements of the agroecological transition. Ultimately, this allows growers and houses to sustain the availability and quality of its wines despite the effects of climate change.

With continued commitment and collaboration, the Champagne region is looking towards a sparkling future and a deep-rooted sustainable outlook - with quality still at the forefront.

ROAD RACER

Truly pure driving experiences are hard to come by in todays production automotive market, with technology taking centre stage. However, if you look in the right places, you might just find something a little bit special. Putting the driving first, Porsche's little gem is raw driving pleasure.

your

You will struggle to find many performance production vehicles available on the market today that can deliver a raw driving experience, largely due to the shift in transmission use to an almost exclusively automatic offering - often with the coinciding paddleshift option. However, every now and again, someone comes up with something that does just that, and more often than not, it comes from Porsche's athletic stable.

The 718 family is the perfect place to find such a machine and the latest 718 Cayman GT4 brings a traditional automotive ethos very much up to date. The purity of its character appeals to sports car enthusiasts who delight in unadulterated driving pleasure and appreciate an incredibly high level of agility as well as an almost intimate proximity to its power.

Adopting the perfectly balanced mid-engined layout, both the 718 Spyder and Cayman GT4 share a technically identical base for the first time ever. Included in this is the incredible, newly developed 4.0-litre six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, paired with an engaging six-speed manual gearbox.

At the heart, the 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine - which is based on the same engine family as the turbocharged motors in the current 911 Carrera model series - is a high-revving powerplant which generates 420 PS - 35 PS more than the previous GT4and a peak torque of 420 Nm available between 5,000 and 6,800 rpm. What makes this car somewhat unique in today's market is that manual gearbox that is capable of breaking the 300 km/h (186mph) barrier. The 718 Cayman GT4 can reach a top speed of porsche.com/uk

189mph and accelerate from standing to sixty-two miles per hour in a swift 4.4 seconds.

The dynamism and driver focused feel of this car delivers an exhilarating experience every time you take to the driver seat. A true driving experience supported by the enthralling character of its naturally aspirated engine which combines a modern gasoline particulate filter emission control system with the linear power delivery and the immediate response of a GT engine. It has a maximum engine speed of 8,000 rpm and the unparalleled boxer sound remains untouched.

It's not all traditional engineering however as new technology additions such as a start-stop functionality and adaptive cylinder control feature. During low load operation, it temporarily

interrupts the injection process in one of the two cylinder banks, thus reducing fuel consumption similar to that now found across the VW Group.

Piezo injectors are used for direct fuel injection for the first time ever in a high-revving engine, splitting each injection process into up to five individual injections in order to support a complete, and therefore emissions-friendly, combustion process. While a variable intake system with two resonance valves ensures optimum gas exchange in the cylinders.

With such a performance focussed machine, you want to make sure it looks as good as it performs and if anyone can craft an attractive yet aggressive sportscar, it is Porsche. Providing a number of striking features, the 718 Cayman GT4 has a

comprehensively improved aerodynamics package. Producing up to 50 per cent more downforce, without adversely affecting drag, the aerodynamics benefit enormously from the newly designed single-chamber arch rear silencer, creating space in the rear section for a functional diffuser, which accounts for a good 30 per cent of the downforce on the rear axle. The fixed rear wing is also marked out by its greater efficiency, producing around 20 per cent more downforce compared with its predecessor. The front section, which is optimised in the GT style, maintains aerodynamic balance with a large front spoiler lip and so-called air curtains. The latter calming the airflow around the front wheels.

Every aspect of this car is precision engineered to deliver superior cornering dynamics and provide a thrilling driving experience whether you're driving or in the passenger seat. Its further refined lightweight spring-strut front and rear axles make use of racing technology with the direct connection to the chassis partially by means of ball joints. The Porsche active suspension management damping system with 30 mm lower suspension lowers the centre of gravity and improves lateral dynamics. It is specifically designed for use on the racetrack and sharpens the handling characteristics

even further. The Porsche Stability Management (PSM) operates with even greater sensitivity and precision on the GT4, but there is the option to deactivate it in two steps. Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and a mechanical limited slip differential further enhance longitudinal and lateral dynamics, cornering performance and driving pleasure with the added option of a Clubsport package, which includes a rear steel roll bar, a hand-held fire extinguisher and a six-point seatbelt on the driver’s side to complete your 'racecar on the road'.

With all that performance, you need to be sure you can stop on asking. The high-performance braking system provides consistent braking that’s suitable for track driving thanks to large aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes with Porsche ceramic composite brakes also available as an optional extra, so you can rest assured it will respond when required. One additional feature are ultrahigh-performance tyres, specially adapted by Porsche which are partly the reason the 718 Cayman GT4 is able to fly around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, breaking new records - its lap time on the legendary 20.6 km racetrack was 12 seconds faster than its predecessor.

Despite being a performance, driving focussed machine, it is also a 'GT' and as such delivers some comforts when driving. The luxurious interior cabin is finished with plush materials and a sporty design including contrast stitching and function free steering wheel balancing comfort with style and focus.

If you're in the market for an everyday driver, this probably isn't going to be at the top of your list, however, if you are on the search for a true drivers car with a purity rare to find in modern machines that is just as comfortable on the road as tearing around a track, then you will struggle to find something more suited to your needs than this absolute monster.

The raw driving pleasure it produces the second you set off is second to none and something you will enjoy every time you get behind the wheel, whether that's at a track day or heading off for a weekend drive in the country. Performance and style are squeezed in to this relatively small package in a way unlike anything else you'll find on the road and if you're not sure it's the car for you, simply arrange a test drive and after a matter of seconds, you will find yourself asking just one question...which colour am I going to choose?

BMW BUBBLE

Originally produced by the Italian firm Iso SpA in 1953, the Isetta microcar was later built under license in numerous countries including Germany where BMW took to the 'bubble car' like

no other in 1955. Adapting and altering the parts so much that nothing was interchangeable between the original Italian and BMW variants.

The BMW Isetta with its redesigned one-cylinder, four-stroke, 247cc motorcycle powerplant became the world's first mass-production car to achieve a fuel consumption of 94 mpg and was the highest selling single-cylinder car in the world, boasting a 161,728 production run.

This 1960 BMW Isetta 300 - which features the 300cc variant engine introduced in 1956 which saw an enlargement of the single cylinder to a 72mm bore and 73mm stroke, providing a displacement of exactly 298cc - boasts the increased output of 13hp and updated sliding windows that replaced the 'bubble' glazing.

It is a rare right-hand drive model finished in a striking blue over white coachwork that received a restoration in 2018 complete with new blue interior; re-covered bench seat and new carpets; all new badges, chrome-work, new carburettors and engine rebuild. These cars don't come around very often and this is very high quality example.

Since the start of 2023 there has certainly been plenty of activity in the market, with a steady stream of supply and tenants looking to put down roots across central London. Not only does it provide access to a covetable lifestyle, it gives the flexibility to try out different hot spot neighbourhoods before committing to buying and the considerable stamp duty outlay that now involves.

When it comes to sought after locations, the golden post codes of prime central London ultimately prevail. Chelsea, Kensington, Notting Hill, Mayfair and St. Jon’s Wood are all top of tenants lists, largely for the stock that is available here, the world renowned and respected school system and the city’s cosmopolitan feel.

Mayfair in particular has had a bit of a renaissance in recent months and it has been firmly placed back on the map. The slightly more saturated market and limited stock here creates an exciting market and adds a sense of exclusivity, that tenants at this level want.

We also see many clients who are renovating their home and are therefore looking to rent nearby so often the question has become ‘can I walk my children to school and pop to the building project easily from here?’.

There’s undoubtedly a favour towards keeping stock off market, especially in the early days of a launch. In the current market I’d say around 70% of our super prime lettings stock - so that is homes achieving

LONDON’S SUPER PRIME RENTAL RENAISSANCE

north of £5,000 per week - are kept offline. This is largely down to vendor and tenant discretion, and enhancing security for clients as there’s no digital footprint to be left behind.

Some clients believe they will get a more committed tenant, by keeping things discreet while others simply want to test the water. That being said, the relationship between clients and the agent handling the tenancy is also key. Once an agent understands the requirements for the tenant and landlord then they will make sure that suitable homes are put in front of them to consider.

Something to emerge this year is the selective and more considered approach that tenants are taking when it comes to finding their next rental property. During the pandemic there was more of a scattergun approach to viewing and finding a property, but this has since subsided and now clients are viewing fewer properties that fit the brief.

When it comes to tenant wish lists, security and proximity to schools have long taken centre stage. Interestingly, swimming pools have had a bit of a comeback in more recent months. Many homes at this level come with a home gym of sorts, but there are fewer with a pool, so this adds a degree of exclusivity.

Generally most want a lease of two years or more, but we do see tenants enquiring for short term lets, particularly during the summer season and when Ascot, Wimbledon and Chelsea Flower Show take place.

Whether it’s a short or long lease, around 85 per cent of

demand is for fully furnished turnkey properties. Where once the first choice for those with the means may have been an extended stay in a hotel suite, most now favour a rental property due to a combination of enhanced control, personalisation and lifestyle factors. Clients enjoy the convenience of having a full wardrobe of clothes they can leave behind in order to travel light, hanging their favourite piece of art on the wall for that homely feel and having informal, private spaces to entertain friends and family. This goes hand in hand with the fact that tenants, both domestic and international, are more transient than ever.
