KENSINGTON & CHELSEA FESTIVAL

Spanning the summer - until Thursday 31 August 2023 - the Kensington and Chelsea Festival has returned for its third consecutive year.

Taking place across the borough in a reimagining of its spaces, from the best-known cultural venues to the less discovered areas and outdoor spaces, Kensington and Chelsea Festival makes use of every inch of the borough to host a multitude of live art performances, large and small, showcasing exceptional established artists alongside the very best emerging talent.

With a cultural offering across theatre, circus, opera, dance, music, outdoor arts, family shows, participatory activities, talks, walks and public art pieces, the festival was born out of a desire to lift spirits by celebrating culture and creativity.

First established in 2021 with a firm goal of ensuring the myriad events offer everyone in the borough and beyond a chance to experience the widest variety of culture on their doorsteps, the

Festival is run and funded by Kensington and Chelsea Council.

One of the most exciting projects to appear at the Festival will be Mars, the touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter, the artwork features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Martian surface. At an approximate scale of 1:1 million, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 10 kilometres of the surface of Mars.

The artwork allows you to view Mars from the air, as though you are a satellite mapping and studying the surface in perfect detail. Every valley, crater, volcano, and mountain are laid bare to inspect. You are transported to this desert wasteland, to imagine what it’s like to step foot on this incredible planet and in comparison, really value life on Earth.

Image © Luke Jerram | kcfestival.co.uk

Mars was named by the ancient Romans for their god of war because its reddish colour was reminiscent of blood. Accompanying the Mars sculpture is a specially created sound composition by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones. Featuring the sounds of seas, deserts and clips from NASA missions to Mars, it also incorporates the sounds of distant bombing and people marching, as if to war. This new soundtrack allows viewers the opportunity to reflect on the current conflict in Ukraine and the history and notion of war.

Each venue also programmes their own series of events to contemplate not just the beauty of the red planet and wonder of space science, but also to highlight injustice and the effects of war.

Mars follows the hugely successful appearance of Luke Jerram’s previous works at the Kensington and Chelsea Festival. Each attracted up to 3,000 visitors per day. This summer will be the first time that Mars has been installed in a Church setting and a new soundscape has been created especially for the festival.

The installation will appear at three different sites across the festival. For August, it will be at All Saints’ Church (W11 1JS) from Monday 31 July to Tuesday 8 August and Jubilee Square (W8 7NX) - an outdoor setting from Thursday 10 August to Sunday 13 August. Tickets are required, but all locations will be free to visit.

Other highlights of the festival include an extensive outdoor arts programme and a return of one of the most popular collaborations from last year’s festival in collaboration with Notting Hill Carnival.

At the heart of Kensington and Chelsea Festival’s careful curation is a desire to reflect, represent, inspire, and involve the entire community who live in the borough.

Year-on-year, the Festival aims to broaden accessibility, to bring people together, and to help to ensure that art, in all its forms, is available for all. To that end, 70% of the activities offered are either free or “pay what you want”, and concession tickets are available for all shows presented in theatres and established venues, thereby ensuring that budget is no barrier to residents enjoying the festival and perhaps trying something they may not have considered before.

Whether residents or visitors are in the mood for the raucous or the refined, the programming is intended to ensure that festival will have events in place to suit - from family shows, street art, and circus to visual art, opera, and open-air arias. In this way, the festival aims to increase accessibility and break down barriers to taking part (be they financial, cultural, language-based, or other).

DIOR AT HARRODS

In 1953, Christian Dior struck up a powerful, enduring relationship with Harrods. This story, which has continued to develop through outstanding collaborations, is enriched today by a new chapter.

In honour of the friendship forged nearly seventy years ago, Dior is inaugurating a series of pop-up boutiques within the iconic Knightsbridge department store. These disclose the Dior autumnwinter 2023-2024 ready-to-wear collection thought up by Maria Grazia Chiuri.

Three exceptional spaces present the House’s different realms - from shoes to accessories - and praise the strength, fragility and beauty of a femininity in perpetual motion.

Running from the 4 August to 27 August, and taking the two corner spaces on either end of Brompton Road, the first space will be dedicated to the Plan de Paris collection. Recreating the warm cocoon of a library dressed in the Plan de Paris motif inspired by a scarf designed by Monsieur Dior in the 1950s, the space celebrates the sacred ties that unite Dior and the French capital. The streets and monuments of the City of Light are traced on the floor and walls in a subtle interplay of shading and perspectives.

The emblematic Parisian locations - from Faubourg-SaintHonoré, where the founding-couturier spotted his lucky star, to 30 Avenue Montaigne, the House’s iconic address – also magnify

the baroque Edwardian architecture of the facade: a large central panel is featured on the building and the windows display shelves filled with a multitude of books. A set of models are enhanced by the sketches that are veritable celebrations of poetic strolls. While trench coats are revisited the home wear of the Dior Chez Moi capsule promises refined comfort. A mini lounge allows visitors to enjoy French music from revered artists such as Edith Piaf and Juliette Greco.

The second space is a giftshop, inviting shoppers to find the perfect present for their loved ones. The Florilegio print in a variety of pinks, blues, yellows and greens illustrates the vital energy of the plant world and adorns certain pieces of furniture. Within this prestigious setting are items distinguished by floral details, such as the D-Bobby bob, silk twill shirts, Mitzah scarves and the Dior Book Tote with its delicate embroidery.

The final step in this captivating odyssey is an enchanting cabinet of curiosities in which visitors can discover irresistible leather goods, glowing with chromatic nuances. Reflecting the virtuoso skills of the Ateliers, variations of the Lady Dior and Lady D-Joy appear in a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours.

A marvellous event combining the bold innovation and classic heritage of the two Houses, linked more than ever by a quest for excellence in the name of dreams and magic.

Created in 2005 by Luc Pettavino, Only Watch sought to raise funds for research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy - a genetic disease that affects 1 in 3,500 boys, progressively weakening all their muscles and that affected Luc and Monique’s son, Paul - by auctioning one-off timepieces. Since its introduction, thanks to the increasing formidable mobilisation of the watch industry and the support of the entire ecosystem, the initiative has grown to become a highly anticipated biennial rendezvous in the horology calendar for both brands and collectors alike.

TOURBILLON PLANETARIUM

A friendship spanning 25 years, human endeavour, the summit of high-flying watchmaking expertise and an unprecedented blend of talents have all come together in the Tourbillon Planetarium Only Watch 2023 for the charity timepiece auction. Bringing a unique cosmic creation into existence, Frederique Constant and Christiaan van der Klaauw have created a fine piece.

The single piece features a Frederique Constant tourbillon and the brand’s remarkable manual finishings alongside Christiaan van der Klaauw’s planetarium - the smallest in the world and the first ever produced for a wristwatch. The superlative creation has been hand-finished throughout, housed in a platinum case with a diameter of just 42mm. For the first time ever, it unites the Dutch firm’s planetarium with the Geneva tourbillon, both suitably clad for the occasion with an aventurine dial.

For 35 years now, Frederique Constant has been embodying its mantra of traditional, luxury Swiss Made watchmaking at a fair price, an equation that had been deemed impossible to solve until the Firm’s founders Aletta and Peter Stas did just that. Their vision has been brought to life with the help of dozens

of watchmakers, designers, and craftsmen working together in Geneva at Manufacture Frederique Constant. Niels Eggerding was one of the pillars of this ascent. Working his way up the ranks from Head of Sales to Managing Director before becoming CEO of the Frederique Constant Group, he has gradually established the maison’s international reputation and its status as an acclaimed watchmaking house. For nearly a quarter of a century, Pim Koeslag worked by his side as one of the technical brains that have given birth to over 30 Manufacture calibers, the first of which was released in 2004.

A few months ago, Pim Koeslag moved over to take the helm at Christiaan van der Klaauw. Like him, Aletta and Peter Stas, and indeed Niels Eggerding, the firm is Dutch. In a demonstration of the longstanding friendship between Switzerland and the Netherlands, the two watchmaking houses have made the most of the handover to pool their knowhow. Not for a collection, but for a unique piece to benefit a cause dear to Frederique Constant: Only Watch. This auction has been held every two years since 2003 under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco, with all profits

going to Association Monégasque Contre les Myopathies, a charity devoted to research into muscular dystrophy; Frederique Constant has been supporting the initiative since 2005.

The exceptional collaboration has resulted in an exceptional piece, with the Tourbillon Planetarium Only Watch 2023 boasting more than one first. It’s the first Frederique Constant Manufacture Tourbillon to have a planetarium - and the first Christiaan van der Klaauw piece of this type to feature a tourbillon. It’s also the first time that a Manufacture Frederique Constant timepiece has had an aventurine dial - or indeed a 42-millimetre platinum case, designed especially for the model in question. And too, it’s the first time since the firm’s inception that a Frederique Constant has included a combined month and date display using hands on a single counter. In all, that makes five firsts in one watch - only one of which will ever be made. That itself is unprecedented in Frederique Constant’s history.

The planetarium designed by Christiaan van der Klaauw reigns supreme at 12 o’clock. The man himself created the first such model over 40 years ago, in 1982, for a clock, before miniaturising it for a wristwatch in 1999. Since then, the firm that bears his name has become the unrivalled expert in timepieces with astronomical complications, constantly refining the planetarium through to the version unveiled today, still the smallest mechanical planetarium in the world. The heliocentric system brings together six moving discs in the same plane, each with its own planet completing its orbit around the sun in real time: Mercury (88 days), Venus (225 days), Earth (365 days), Mars (687 days), Jupiter (12 years) and Saturn (29 years). This feat, involving such long spans of time, requires some of the mechanisms used to operate at an incredibly slow pace. The wearer will have to wait almost thirty years to see Saturn, the outermost planet in this system, complete a full orbit. The planetarium surround indicates angles of rotation from 0° to 360° and the relevant star signs for each sector, calibrated with respect to the Earth’s relative position. The colours of the planets use the Only Watch 2023 palette - whilst also remaining faithful to the hues of the original heavenly bodies.

The Manufacture Tourbillon at six o’clock has been designed, assembled and finished by Frederique Constant in its Geneva manufactory, integrated into a

onlywatch.com

movement that’s been

hand-finished throughout. Using traditional tools and instruments, two watchmakers spent weeks on the meticulous finishings of each component: a buff file for bevelling, a hammer and punch for hand-punching, and so on.

On the dial side, the two complications brought together here for the first time are supplemented by two counters located on either side, resulting in perfect visual harmony: the day/month pair at 9 o’clock and the respective emblems of Frederique Constant and Christiaan van der Klaauw at 3 o’clock, encircled by the inscription “Only Watch Pièce Unique”. For the caseback, Frederique Constant has created a specific decoration for the automatic bridge (or frame): a miniature artistic engraving, done by hand in a more figurative and abstract spirit. Symbolically, the Sun takes its place at the centre of the composition - and thus of the oscillating weight. Around it, shooting stars and planets wheel through the heavens in delightful, organised cosmic chaos - perfect for a collector in touch with their inner child and still (a little) starry-eyed.

ULTIMATE SAPPHIRE

For the 10th edition of the biennial Only Watch charity auction, the Biel/Bienne-based independent watch brand Armin Strom has created a unique edition of its successful Gravity Equal Force, the world’s first automatic watch with a constant force transmission.

This unique iteration of the Gravity Equal Force ‘Ultimate Sapphire’ incorporates the promotional colours of the 2023 Only Watch event, with relevant details including a transparent green sapphire dial, a red logo and blue stitching on the included custom strap. The one-of-a-kind timepiece offers an extraordinary view of the exquisitely finished manufacture movement, which features superior chronometric performance and exceptional hand-finishing, with a contemporary expression made in-house by Armin Strom’s master artisans.

For Armin Strom’s master watchmaker and co-founder Claude Greisler, the green yet transparent dial of the Gravity Equal Force Only Watch 2023 makes perfect sense. “Green is the colour of hope. And hope is important when it comes to this terrible disease for children,” he says, hoping

the donated watch will bring a good contribution to Only Watch, the organisation which since 2005 has raised nearly CHF 100 million to accelerate the research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Together with surrounding colourful details, the off-centre sapphire dial forms a deconstructed rainbow, which shares the dial-face attention with Armin Strom’s signature tri-bridge design. This holds the microrotor, the winding mechanism and the patent pending Equal Force Barrel, an example of Armin Strom’s relentless quest to improve timekeeping. This innovation provides consistent power from the mainspring to the balance wheel, thus always ensuring flawless and constant precision during the power reserve.

The Gravity Equal Force Only Watch 2023 features everything that passionate watch collectors around the world have come to associate with Armin Strom: extreme accuracy, contemporary and architectural design, and an open-worked dial revealing mechanical dreams where all parts - even the invisible ones - are decorated by hand by Armin Strom’s in-house master artisans.

POLO SKELETON

This year Piaget is donating a unique piece to the 2023 Only Watch Charity auction in Monaco, designed and created specially for the occasion - The Piaget Polo Skeleton.

The Piaget Polo has been a style icon combining refined materials, craftsmanship, design and a unique sense of style since 1979. Both an embodiment of a way of life and a work of art in itself, with its disruptive design and a unique style that has evolved over time, the piece is immediately recognisable to watch enthusiasts.

This iconic example of the Maison’s watchmaking style also evokes the Piaget Society’s values of shared joie de vivre. Its iconic fluidity offers a second skin feeling, immediately embraced by the world’s elite: the Piaget Society, where the jet set, haute couture and high watchmaking intersect. This comes as no surprise when you remember that Yves Piaget formed a close friendship with Andy Warhol in New York, in the heyday of Studio 54 and Regine’s. Warhol himself owned no fewer than seven Piaget watches. The Polo won the hearts of Ursula Andress and Steve Martin, and captivated Miles Davis, Bjorn Borg, Roger Moore, and many more.

Since 1979, its harmonious proportions have masterfully

combined curved lines and signature details. With yellow gold and brightly coloured hard stone dials, the watch has stood the test of time, erasing the boundaries between distinction and exuberance, flamboyance and discretion. Intensely refined, the piece embodies all the Maison’s values in terms of watchmaking excellence - a model of masterful complications and ultra-thin movements.

When you hear “jet set” and “Côte d’Azur”, Monaco instantly springs to mind. Piaget has decided to donate a unique piece to the 2023 Onlywatch charity auction, which takes place every two years in the Principality to raise money for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The piece is a creative brightly coloured Piaget Polo Skeleton arty edition, both artistically technical and coolly chic. Its design pays homage to the “Hexa Grace” artwork by Victor Vasarely, which is exhibited in Monaco.

Beating to the rhythm of a coloured Manufacture calibre 1200S1, with green, blue and rose-gold coloured skeletonised bridges, all specifically designed for this unique piece, the ultrathin movement, only 2.4 mm thick, is housed within a rose-gold case measuring 42 mm in diameter and only 6.5 mm in thickness. This unique Piaget Polo Skeleton Arty is coupled with a blue interchangeable strap, also designed specifically for the occasion.

ORBIS MUNDI

In each edition of Only Watch, a colour palette is given to guide the designers of the unique timepieces for the auction. This year’s colour choices, a range of colours including blue, green, yellow, pink, and magenta, celebrates the 10th edition of Only Watch, a perfect choice for a world that needs more compassion, understanding, and tolerance.

Bovet selected magenta as the primary colour for their timepiece because of what it represents - kindness, harmony, support, and love.

The award-winning Orbis Mundi was chosen by Bovet as the base for this year’s Only Watch unique piece because of its universal time display, and for how travel brings the world together, expanding horizons, fostering understanding, and increasing compassion.

The dial of the Orbis Mundi is guilloché, covered with seven layers of vibrant magenta lacquer, each one applied by hand, then dried before the application of the next layer. When all

seven layers are in place, the dial is fired in the oven and then polished.

On the world time dial, Monaco - where Only Watch is based - replaces the Geneva time zone, and this is in magenta as well, helping it to stand out as a beacon to the world. The X on the hour dial is in the same hue as well, a nod to the 10th edition of Only Watch.

“Only Watch is a fantastic opportunity for the entire watch industry to come together to do the right thing, selflessly,” says Pascal Raffy, owner, Bovet 1822. “Helping children is the focus of Only Watch, and as such this cause is dear to my heart”.

Back in 1822, 200 years ago this year, founder Edouard Bovet, a watchmaker from Fleurier, Switzerland, traveled the world. As a result, multiple time zone timepieces are in the DNA of the House, and Bovet has produced several variations on this theme.

When Mr. Raffy was designing the world time dome of the Recital 26 Brainstorm Chapter Two, which won the “Mechanical

bovet.com

ONLY WATCH

Exception” award at the GPHG in 2020, he already had in mind its adapted use in the Orbis Mundi. In development for more than two years, the Orbis Mundi, Latin for “the world,” simplifies both the setting and the indications of the world timer for a new generation of watch lovers.

The Orbis Mundi, thanks to Bovet’s engineering expertise, is easy to set, using only the crown to both set the time and the 24 world cities. Turn the crown counter-clockwise to set the hours and minutes, and clockwise to set the unique 24 world time zone dial. Exquisitely finished, the Orbis Mundi stands out for its ease of use and emblematic Fleurier case, a true symbol of two centuries of watchmaking excellence. The ergonomic 42mm red gold case provides optimal comfort no matter the size of the wearer’s wrist, thanks to its slim profile (11.25mm) and its iconic real-sapphire-cabochon-topped crown and Bovet bow at 12 o’clock.

In addition to clear and easily readable hours and minutes, this timepiece opens up the dial to display the in-house Bovet balance wheel and regulating organ, with its three-arm rotating second hand and a 20-second dial at 6 o’clock. On the right side of the world-time dial, is the power reserve indicator, highlighting the incredible and very useful seven days of power reserve with one single barrel. In fact, Bovet 1822 has a history of impressive power reserves, all due to the fact that Mr. Raffy is a collector and knows how important long power reserves are for complicated timepieces.

The sapphire glass of the screwdown back lets collectors appreciate every detail of this finely finished manual-wind manufacture movement, polished, angled, and decorated like the House of Bovet’s high complications, thanks to the work of the in-house artisans. The exhibition back is also a hallmark from the history of Maison Bovet: the Bovet brothers are famous for inventing the see-through cover during the 1800s to showcase their finely engraved and decorated movements.

The House of Bovet is one of the few completely integrated manufactures in the watchmaking industry. Bovet produces more than 95% of the components that go into its timepieces, and as a result the House uses the term “Swiss Handcrafted” instead of “Swiss Made,” as the Swiss Made barrier, 60%, is too low.

The Orbis Mundi endeavours to bring the world closer together, and the hope of this special unique piece for Only Watch is that the world will come together to rally behind and support this worthy cause.

TAKASHI MURAKAMI TOURBILLON

The central tourbillon could be interpreted as Hublot’s intention to put Haute Horlogerie back in the spotlight. Or, its round case might be seen to resemble a child’s drawing of a 12-petalled daisy, tipped with green as a sign of hope. Either way, the strength of the MP-15 Takashi Murakami Tourbillon Only Watch lies in the fact that everyone will see it as symbolic of what they value. It will blossom around as many values as there are colours, whether these are high-tech, exquisite, playful, unique, hypnotic...Haute Horlogerie meets Haute Joaillerie on this highly creative timepiece inspired by Takashi Murakami’s iconic smiling flower.

Floral composition is central to the work of Takashi Murakami. This Japanese artist has risen from humble origins to become one of the most sought-after artists in the world, and he has been a Friend of Hublot since 2020. These co-creations have always been produced in limited-edition series. This timepiece is even more limited, being truly unique - not just in its nature, but also in its construction. What sets the MP-15 apart from any other piece that the manufacture has ever created in its forty-plus years of experience, is its central tourbillon.

The central tourbillon represents the fusion of art and horological design. The idea is certainly to have Haute Horlogerie take centre stage physically, but not only that, also to show that the tourbillon - the beating heart of the watch - represents the heart of the person who buys it at the auction in aid of research against Duchenne’s disease, and also the hearts of those children fighting the disease.

Imagining this piece, Takashi Murakami explicitly requested the inclusion of a central tourbillon. A challenge in and of itself, this would become Hublot’s very first central tourbillon. This was a difficult challenge because, it becomes very complicated to indicate the hours and minutes which compete for the same central position. By accepting Takashi Murakami’s challenge, Hublot would have to make the right choices in order to integrate the aesthetic components of the central tourbillon to the technical requirements.

In this design, the cannon pinion and the hour wheel had to be pivoted around the tourbillon support by creating a co-axial construction. This was made possible thanks to the central flying tourbillon that is seemingly suspended in mid-air with two hands passing under its cage to indicate the hours and minutes. These hands gravitate towards 12 luminescent indices that echo the colours of the 2023 edition of the Hublot for Only Watch, as well as keeping the exact proportions required by the design so dear to Murakami, and which Hublot R&D had to follow to the letter.

Thanks to its two barrels, the manual movement offers a 150-hour power reserve (almost a whole week) - a very rare feature for such a construction. Mounted in series but on a single plane, these generously proportioned barrels can be admired through the case back which is made entirely from sapphire.

From the tourbillon and the indices to the petals, fans of Takashi Murakami’s colourful poetry will follow his rhythm on this MP-15, from the interior to the exterior, where 12 petals richly set with 444 gemstones give the piece a bright, joyful aesthetic. Like a real flower, these petals are angled towards the centre of the movement. The clear and bold demarcations of colour are representative of the 2023 Only Watch. The idea was not to offer a traditional rainbow gradient effect, but rather to play with the brightness of the shades and the brilliance of the gemstones, like a child playing with their crayons, creating a bright piece of Superflat Art for the wrist.

But that is not all: true to Murakami’s universe, under its domed sapphire crystal this MP-15 Only Watch reveals a fine laser engraving depicting a broad smile, complete with two smiling eyes. This colourful piece offers an escape into Takashi Murakami’s lively imagination, and the watch’s bright energy is an ode to the incredible power of a child’s wonder and their endless curiosity.

REBIRTH

The “power design project” began in 2001 for Seiko designers to explore the essence of watches and pursue design possibilities based on annual themes. This experimental endeavor was discontinued in 2009 but has now returned, after 13 years, to propose new ways of design, unbound by pre-existing concepts.

The theme for 2022 is 'Rebirth', with each of the seven conceptual timepieces featured within the display being developed by different designers and their ideas, expanding their imaginations from the distinctive watches and technologies that have emerged throughout Seiko's long history, and have channeled them into the 'Rebirth' of these seven products.

One of the highlights is a wearable concept. Considering what makes a watch and how they might be worn in the future, Prospex designer Yuta Uchiura chose the 1975 Diver’s watch as his base model for this new conceptual piece - the classic ‘tuna’ style case shape, as nicknamed by Seikoholics.

The inspiration for this piece is 'wearability' - the buttons on clothes. Buttons' smooth curved surface inspired the new watch with a rounder shape through delicate polishing and polished glass. The piece is fastened and removed like a button on a shirt; by removing the strap and the caseback, you are able to fasten it and exchange it with the buttons on your clothes should you wish, so it really would become part of your outfit.

Fresh from being on display in Japan and Milan, and now on a flying visit in London, you have the chance to see Seiko's

‘Power Design Project’ in the UK for a limited time only - an exhibition of conceptual watch ideas highlighting the brand's passion for design. The designers have pushed innovation with the theme of ‘Rebirth’ - re-imagining a selection of their most recognisable iconic vintage pieces. Seven conceptual timepieces feature within the display; watches following the designers' ideas for where the future of design may take Seiko watches.

Although not yet for sale within the existing collections, these creative concepts will be on display in the New Bond Street Seiko Boutique in London.

True to the Ted Baker design philosophy Caine draws on traditional reference points and reimagines them to create something more contemporary. Considered use of colour is synonymous with the Ted Baker brand and the use of orange at the sweep and the sub dials defines the juxtaposition of modern and heritage together.

Finally, the Dempsey style also combines modern and traditional characteristics, featuring an eco- genuine leather strap on a 41mm round case adorned with playful Ted Baker lettering on the dial.

This lively collection of timepieces celebrates the convergence of Ted Baker’s iconic design heritage, with its desire to look to and embrace a

EXPLORING THE SOUTH PACIFIC

Remotely located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, the region of Melanesia is a vibrant, culturally rich and geographically beautiful area to explore. Now, Eyos have the perfect solution allowing to soak up everything this incredible region has to offer from the comfort of luxury yacht, Hanse Explorer.

Royal Lancaster Hotel

invites you to ‘Bee Their Guest'

As one of the few remaining independently owned hotels in the capital, the 18-storey Royal Lancaster London underwent an £85 million renovation programme which started in 2015 and was completed in 2017 making it easily one of the best five-star hotels in London. Overlooking Hyde Park and with breath-taking views of the London skyline, it was completely transformed both internally and externally with the entire front of the hotel having been remodeled to showcase an eight-metre glazed façade which reveals the spacious lobby and a stunning white marble staircase that sweeps up to the first floor.

Originally built in 1966 as an office block, it was converted to a hotel in 1967 mainly because there was a high demand for hotels rooms in London at that time and there were very few available. Initially named ‘Royal Lancaster’, the name comes from the influential House of Lancaster in the north-west of England. Victorious during the War of the Roses, all their titles and heritage were later inherited by the British Monarchy.

Royal Lancaster London is part of The Landmark Lancaster Hotel Group which is owned by Thai entrepreneur Jatuporn Sihanatkathakul. The group prides itself in representing independence and Thai hospitality on a global stage and this is evident as soon as you walk through the doors of this awardwinning hotel.

The 411 rooms and suites at Royal Lancaster London combine timeless classic style, sumptuous comfort and spectacular views. Each room has been impeccably designed with every luxury and amenity in mind, to ensure that every stay, whether business or pleasure, is truly memorable. Paying homage to the hotel’s unique

location, all guest rooms were designed with windows that showcase the remarkable views whichever room you choose to stay in.

If you want a panoramic view in all directions, the elegant Park Suite is the one to book. From the moment you walk through the door, the views of Hyde Park and the Italian Gardens takes your breath away. These south-facing suites flood with natural daylight and boast far-reaching views across the city from sunrise to sunset. Featuring a spacious living area with sumptuous velvet sofas and a striking glass dining table, this suite is ideal for entertaining guests or simply enjoying the comfort of the room.

Offering contemporary and thoughtful touches, these stunning Suites have been impeccably designed with every luxury in mind for a truly memorable stay.

In 2009, the Royal Lancaster became the first central London hotel to install beehives on their rooftop. Led by Queen Bee Jo Hemesley for over 14 years, their team of beekeepers look after the 10 hives in the Honey Farm which has approximately 60,000 to 80,000 hardworking bees in each colony. A bee can fly up to 3 miles from the hive to forage for nectar but the bees at Royal Lancaster collect most of theirs from Hyde Park which gives it a delicious floral taste. Each summer, honey is harvested and gifted to Royal Lancaster team to drizzle over desserts and stir into cocktails for guests

to enjoy.

In 2023, the Royal Lancaster Honey Farm partnered with Bees Abroad by twinning their rooftop hives with a beehive on Kome Island in Tanzania; a project focussed on empowering rural women in Tanzania through beekeeping. Bees Abroad are an incredible grassroots organisation with global ambition to create beekeepers for life. Together with local beekeeper trainers and organisations, they educate, guide, and mentor communities in local best practices in beekeeping, business creation, and protecting the environment. To support the work that they do, the Royal Lancaster recently launched their ‘Bee Our Guest’ package which includes a £10 donation to support this wonderful charity. Guests can enjoy an overnight stay with guaranteed views of Hyde Park and the rooftop beehives, a delicious honey cocktail in a glass made from beeswax and the next morning, an indulgent breakfast where fresh honeycomb can be found on the buffet to drizzle on your granola!

Later in the day, enjoy artisan coffee served with delicious pastries and homemade cakes or Champagne Afternoon Tea in

the Hyde Café which is a perfect hideaway to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. For an unforgettable dinner experience, discover Nipa Thai. Tucked away on the first floor, this beautiful and welcoming restaurant decorated in teak sourced from Thailand offers traditional, authentic Thai cuisine. Holding the Signature Thai Select Award from the Thai Government, this menu transports you to the heart of Bangkok and the traditional all-female, all-Thai kitchen is led by Head Chef Sangaun Parr who has been with the company for over 25 years.

The Royal Lancaster London has something to offer for everyone and award-winning General Manager, Sally Beck takes great pride in having a conscientious, highly professional, and happy team dedicated to delivering outstanding service and ensuring that every guest experience is caring and delightfully memorable.

Whether it be a chic dinner experience, special occasion, a leisurely lunch, a fine high tea in London or simply a freshly ground coffee and croissant in comfort, the Royal Lancaster London offers ambience, atmosphere and cleverly composed menus to delight every appetite.

MELANESIA

EYOS info@eyos.com | eyos-expeditions.com

SOUTH PACIFIC

EYOS, the leader in superyacht expedition charters to the most culturally rich places on earth, has announced the recently refurbished Hanse Explorer will be available for charter in Melanesia from May to September 2024. Marking one of the first times an international superyacht will be based in the region for a full summer season, Hanse Explorer once again pushes the exploration envelope for its charter guests.

Despite being one of the least explored places on earth, Melanesia - which encompasses Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Caledonia - is familiar territory for EYOS, with co-founder Rob McCallum enjoying life in Papua New Guinea for 13 years.

“Melanesia has long been part of EYOS’s DNA,” says McCallum, a Divemaster and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of London. Thanks to McCallum’s deep network of local relationships and the rare insight of EYOS expedition leaders such as Angela Pennefather, who was born and raised in PNG, guests will discover the region through a locals’ perspective, exploring WWII shipwrecks, witnessing sacred rituals and ancient rites of passage, and encountering the incredible diversity of the islands and their aquatic ecosystems.

EYOS will help you craft a fully bespoke itinerary through the region - from the spectacular volcanoes of Vanuatu and the colourful underwater world of the Solomon Islands to the rich tapestry of 5,000 tribes (speaking over 850 languages) of Papua New Guinea - to deliver the ultimate trip to this vibrant region.

As Hanse Explorer sails through crystalline waters, the islands’ mesmerizing landscapes will come into view, with smouldering volcanoes, gushing waterfalls, colourful reefs, remote jungle villages, and lush green mountains setting the scene for the adventure of a lifetime. In Papua New Guinea, guests can snorkel

or dive in Kimbe Bay - home to over 70 percent of all coral species in the Indo/Pacific and featuring more than 200 reefs and dive sites - while in Vanuatu, guests will have the experience to witness the fiery eruptions of volcanoes at night.

Flexible itineraries offer a fascinating glimpse into local life: from the spectacle of Pentecostal land diving in Vanuatu (where young men hurl themselves off 100-foot wooden towers with vines twined around their ankles) to Mud Dance ceremonies in the Solomon Islands. In Papua New Guinea, guests will have the opportunity to explore the Baining Mountains to observe young Baining men perform the Fire dance, marking their initiation into adulthood, or attend a sing-sing gathering where various Highlanders share their cultural differences through song, dance, and music.

For guests wanting deeper immersion in Papua New Guinea, there will be an opportunity to head out on an ‘air-safari’ to overnight in Mt. Hagen, located in the heart of PNG. EYOS is one of the only companies with the expertise to combine a yacht charter along the coast with a multi-night interior PNG experience in the Highlands. Located at 5,000 feet above sea level, the area is home to a number of different tribes who were the last to be exposed to outside influences. There will be opportunities to meet local tribesmen who live much the same way as they have for millennia.

Once again, EYOS demonstrate their incredible expertise and understanding of what it means to explore, taking one of the most incredible destinations in the world and delivering an itinerary that allows you to fully engage with the environment and its communities. All of which is executed with minimal influence and impact on the surroundings, nature and people as with all of the expeditions undertaken by the renowned company.

Prices vary and are available on request.

Carlotta

Big Mamma Group - the group behind Circolo Popolare and Jacuzzi - have recently opened their latest outpost, Carlotta. Paying tribute to the Italians who packed up their bags, recipes and heritage and took them across the pond to create a wealth of new Italian cultures, Carlotta is an elegant homage to Italian tradition, whether that be a trattoria in Palermo, Sicily or a family run ristorante in Oakland, New Jersey.

Situated in the heart of welcoming Marylebone Village, the cosy restaurant - and like the other locations in the group - features stunning interiors with the walls adorned with the team's very own family wedding pictures.

With the in-house interiors design team, Studio Kiki bringing the glitz and glam, Carlotta boasts a gilded bar and an elegant dining room with sumptuous leather banquets, swirling pink and turquoise carpet, gold mirrors and opulent curtained walls. At the back of the dining room is the winners table, a hidden booth for eight complete with rose quartz wall chandeliers, that's perfect to while away an evening feasting on steaks and fine wine. For a party, head downstairs to the seductive midnight blue suede lounge with its 80s mirror striped curved ceiling and full view of the open kitchen.

A full family affair, the menu features recipes from Head Chef Armando’s nonna with fresh authentic produce from Italy and the best of British. From razor clams caught on the beaches of Scotland, breaded and baked in garlicky butter, to high-welfare rose veal from female-run Alternative Meats in Cheshire, there's plenty to choose from.

Highlights include capocollo del cacciatore from Cesare and

giacomo de stefani in veneto sliced at the kitchen bar; deep-fried Italian artichokes, served with a lemony garlicky dip; and 250g Apulian burrata dressed in fine Sicilian olive oil.

Different to the other locations in the group, for the first time there is no pizza on the menu, so the team can focus solely on beautifully crafted home-made pastas. From Paccheri and Spaghetti to Tortelloni and Fettuccine, sauces have been inspired by Italo American greats. Must tries include Pasta Alla Vodka con I Frutti Di Mare - homemade penne in a creamy tomato and vodka sauce, served with fresh Cornish crab, clams and tarragon oil; and the spectacular Fettuccine Alfredo al Tartufo per 2 - 40cm long pasta ribbons in truffle butter, parmigiano and topped with even more fresh truffle.

Straight from the basque grill, Cornish T-Bone Fiorentina is perfect for sharing, served with grilled courgettes and peppers; while the Lamb Chops Milanese have been stuffed with mozzarella flor di latte and wrapped in pancetta before being breaded and fried.

Paying homage to the UK's love of Strawberries and Cream, Berries & Cream is a fresh concoction of raspberries and strawberries in a spiced sauce served with lashings of vanilla whipped cream. Also great for warm evenings, Carlotta’s Wedding Cake served under a waterfall of vanilla cream and meringue. Chocoholics will delight in the Italian Chocolate Tart, filled with salted caramel, on a plate entirely made up of cream.

The backlit Rosso Levanto marble bar is birthplace to the many cocktails made at Carlotta. From the Rossini to the Cedroni, a chamomile infused negroni there's something for everyone. A welcome addition to the neighbourhood.

EVERYTHING PINK

Over recent years, rosé has been synonymous with the summer months, and this year pink certainly seems to be “colour of the month” with Barbie’s much-anticipated film coming out on 21 July. The Champagne Bureau UK* has put together a guide to Rosé Champagne for those who want to celebrate la vie en rosé and all things pink. The nation clearly loves this highly Instagrammable, complex and fruity style, with Rosé Champagne being the second largest cuvée type shipped to the UK.

Why Rosé?

Not only is Rosé Champagne having a moment and becoming increasingly fashionable by the day, but these wines are absolutely delicious and can range from being light to much more full-bodied. They offer such a wide spectrum of aromas with some wines developing notes of freshness containing hints of citrus fruits and strawberries or, in contrast, aromas that are smoother and more powerful such as ripe yellow and small red fruits. As these wines age, these aromas develop notes of dried fruit and spices - offering a unique versatility that not all styles can.

Putting the pink in Rosé

Rosé Champagne comes in every conceivable shade of pink from soft pink, salmon pink to a darker raspberry pink. Unbeknown to many, Rosé Champagnes’ distinct and aesthetically pleasing

pink hue can be produced in two ways: Blending and Macerating. Blended Rosés are obtained by mixing white wines with a small amount of red wine (produced in the Champagne region), usually 5%-20% - this is the most commonly practiced method. In contrast, Macerated Rosés are created by macerating the juice of black grapes in their skins from 24 to 72 hours according to the year and the colour. This is essentially the bleeding of the black grape skins into the white wine. Whatever production method is used, Rosé Champagne’s iconic pink bubbles are always prevalent.

What to pair it with?

Rosé is one of the most versatile and food-friendly styles of Champagne, as the depth of flavour combined with acidity allows it to be paired with an array of different dishes. Rosé Champagne wines have a flamboyant joyfulness that combines excellently with dishes of unfamiliar flavour and fragrance to create new, warm and refined harmonies. Curry’s, tajines, white meats glazed with pineapple, figs or coconuts and other dishes from the East or Far East go beautifully with Rosé Champagne - provided you maintain a sense of balance and avoid overwhelming the palate with ’explosive' combinations.

Finding the right pairings also depends on the type of rosé you are selecting. Lighter rosés pair best with deep water fish, served with fruits such as lemon or crispy vegetables, as well as sushis,

To find out more about Champagne visit champagne.fr or enrol at champagne-mooc.com

COMITÉ CHAMPAGNE

sashimis and tempuras. More fleshy rosés need robust food with flavour: tasty ‘red‘ meats such as duck, pigeon, beef and lamb seasoned with warm (cumin, saffron) or 'hotter’ spices (white, grey or black pepper), and stews. Mature rosés (refined, old vintages or ‘cuvée spéciale’), need practically no accompaniment. Bring out their special nature with dishes of delicate simplicity and subtle fragrances with lightly marinated shellfish or lightly sautéed whitish meats sprinkled with mild spices. Complex, mature rosé Champagne calls for oriental dishes of the most refined kind. If you’re looking for a food pairing that screams summer just as

much as Rosé Champagne, then look no further than the British summer classic of strawberries and cream - originally introduced by Thomas Wolsey (the right-hand man to King Henry VIII) and now a staple of the Wimbledon Championships since its establishment in 1877 - Rosé Champagne’s aromas around notes of freshness or complex wild berry fruit notes are an excellent companion to this British staple.

With pink being the colour of the month, and the world’s drinks turning pink for summer, now is the perfect time celebrate summer with a glass of delicious and beautiful Rosé Champagne.

CAORUNN GIN

Nestled in the Speyside region of the beautiful Scottish Highlands and situated along the banks of the River Spey is Balmenach Distillery. As well as being a whisky distillery with a spectacularly scenic backdrop of the Cairgorm National Park, it is also home of award-winning Caorunn Gin and the Caorunn Gin Distillery. Hand-crafted in small batches and pronounced ‘ka-roon’, this specialised gin is inspired by the Gaelic word for the humble Rowan berry. Sacred in Celtic legend, it is one of five unique Celtic botanicals that are at the heart of this amazing gin and if you take a walk through their botanical gardens, you will be able to spot the gin’s key ingredients.

Shining through in a region more famous for its whisky, Caorunn is the only gin to be distilled in the world’s only working Copper Berry Chamber. Created in the US in the 1920’s, this chamber was originally used to extract essential oils as a base to create perfumes but using this unique slow distillation process to craft gin makes Caorunn a stand-out product, setting it apart from other brands. Harnessing Scotland’s unique natural resources, this gin has been expertly handcrafted since 2009 in small batches by Gin Master, Simon Buley. The highest quality pure grain spirit and crystal-clear Scottish water are married with 6 traditional and 5 Celtic handpicked botanicals from surrounding hills. As well as the rowan berry, the other four foraged Celtic botanicals also include dandelion, heather, coul blush apple and bog myrtle and can be found within a ten-minute walk of the distillery. These are then paired with the traditional six botanicals consisting of juniper, coriander seed, lemon peel, cassia bark, orange peel and angelica root to create Caorunn’s genius recipe.

This clever gin distillation ensures the botanicals are distilled slowly in the Copper Berry Chamber where this process allows for maximum flavour to be extracted and infused as evenly as possible. This round copper berry chamber contains four large trays on which the botanicals are spread. As the vapour passes through the trays it picks up the flavours of all the botanicals in a long, slow process and when it cools and returns to liquid which is now gin, the botanicals are firmly embedded in the spirit. Working by reacting with the fragrances of the botanicals a perfectly balanced, wellrounded quadruple distilled modern London dry gin is

CAORUNN
Caorunn at Balmenach Distillery, Balmenach Road, Cromdale, Grantown-on Spey PH26 3PF

created and served with apple, the result is a stand-out crisp, mouthwateringly refreshing gin which, since it is only ever distilled in small batches, ensures that every drop tastes as delicious as the first. The taste is clean, sweet, full-bodied, and aromatic with a fresh long-lasting dry finish.

This spring, iconic Balmenach Distillery reopened its doors to the public and visitors are invited to experience the distilling process first-hand. If you ever needed an excuse to visit this hidden gem in the Scottish Highlands, this is it. Distillery Manager since 2014, Kevin Macpherson and his team endeavor to treat guests to an intimate and personal Scottish Gin experience where they can learn more about the Copper Berry Chamber production process and their local Gin Geniuses will take you through what goes into making this gin so unique.

After a behind-the-scenes look at the distillery, guests can experience a tutored deconstructed nosing and tasting session which gives them the chance to explore and discover more about the botanicals along with a neat tasting of Caorunn Gin.

As well as the classic, Caorunn’s strongest portfolio member is Scottish Gin Awards 2022 winner for Best High Strength Gin, the Caorunn Highland Strength which at 54% alcohol by volume (ABV) enhances the dry, crisp, taste of Caorunn to create a peppery, fruity, herbaceous gin with a strong juniper character which is best served over ice with Indian tonic water, garnished with red apple slices and orange oil. Due to the higher strength in alcohol, this gin lends itself perfectly to mixed drinks and cocktails.

A firm favourite from the distillery is Caorunn Scottish Raspberry Gin which was awarded Gold in the World Gin Awards 2022 category for Best Scottish Flavoured Gin. Combining the invigorating dry, crisp taste of Caorunn and enhanced by a natural raspberry sweetness, this is best served over ice with Indian tonic water garnished with fresh raspberries and red apple slices. This delicious flavour expression is the quintessential choice of tipple for all gin lovers out there.

Another winner is the Carounn Blood Orange gin which was awarded the Scottish Gin Awards 2022 - Best Citrus Gin and is a perfect blend of indulgence and flavour which, as well as the natural blood orange, has an added hint of chilli essence to create a vibrant, refreshing, and fruity gin. The taste is sweet and elegant with a spicy, floral warmth that doesn’t contain any artificial flavours or colourings or any added sugar and is best served with Indian tonic water and a slice of orange.

The tour is finished with a refreshing perfect serve of Caorunn and tonic with a slice of red apple.

20 YEARS AT THE TOP

Bentley celebrates two decades of the iconic Continental GT as it continues to reign supreme at the top of the luxury grand tourer segment. Take a look back at where it all started and the latest model-topping Mulliner edition which pushes the boundaries even further.

Electric at Heart

Lexus has been producing hybrid electric cars since 2006 and has become a leader in the technology that has become synonymous with the brand. Now, they are pushing the electric envelope with the production of fully electric, purpose built vehicles that are not confined by the constraints traditional combustion engined cars afford.

The new RZ 450e has been built on a dedicated BEV platform from the outset and is the first in the stable to do so, allowing the marque to develop the car and its technologies to their full potential. First and foremost, the introduction of Lexus' new 'e-Axles' - a compact, modular package which consists of a motor, gearing and a PCU (Power Control Unit), located between the driven wheels - transform the way the electric RZ drives compared to its hybrid and engine powered cointerparts. This is the first application of the technology which is set to roll out across future model releases using compact motor units in both the front and the rear that work with the new Direct4 all-wheel electronic drive torque control. What this means for you is imperceptible adjustments to the car's posture, traction and power distribution that are automatically

undertaken according to the driving conditions.

What's more, their compact design and dimensions - short front e-Axle and low rear e-Axle - contribute to the car’s design, offering gains in cabin space for improved passenger comfort and a low load compartment floor, while also providing more space to accommodate the all important battery beneath the vehicle floor.

The paired Direct4 system which is an exclusive Lexus technology, is an intelligent system that constantly and seamlessly balances the drive torque between the front and rear axles. Further improving the cars performance and stable handling, with intuitive engagement strengthens the sense of connection between driver and machine despite the fully electric control.

This is a highly technologically charged car, with the system using ECU (Engine Control Unit) sensors to collect, evaluate and react to a range of factors, including vehicle speed, steering angle and G forces. These data points mean it can calculate and immediately apply the appropriate drive torque to each e-Axle to maximise grip and traction suitable for the road surface in milliseconds.

LEXUS RZ

Of course, with the slimed-down powertrain compared to a traditional engine and drivetrain setup, the new platform affords considerable freedoms in the design department. On the outside, the signature Lexus shape in the vehicle’s body remains, with its angular yet flowing lines creating a beautiful dance between light and shadow combined with new, striking lighting design and an athletic, pointed profile - achievable thanks to the BEV platform which also lowers the centre of gravity. The platform surprisingly allows for more space and comfort for driver and passengers too, despite the sleek, seamingly low roofline, there is actually increased headroom for passengers.

Meanwhile, the interior lends itself to a light, open space that combines simple, clean design and luxurious appointment of material and finish. The perfect expression of Lexus omotenashi hospitality and takumi craftsmanship.

For the driver it's not just about cabin comfort, but driving comfort as well. Thankfully, there are four selectable drive modes, including an exclusive 'Range' mode to choose from allowing you to adjust the RZ’s performance and driving character. In Normal mode, an optimal balance of performance and power consumption is provided to suit a wide range of driving situations, perfect for your everyday driving. If you would prefer to preserve power, Eco mode is ideal, generating less drive torque in response to accelerator inputs and suppressing the air conditioning - not the best option for those warmer days. Alternatively, to maximise performance, slip it into Sport mode where you'll find a stronger steering feel and sharper accelerator response. You can also set your preferred powertrain, chassis and air conditioning modes using a Custom mode, accessed via the vast multimedia touchscreen.

Maximising realworld range is at the forefront of EV drivers

minds and the RZ's Range mode allows you to do that by reducing power consumption, restricting power output and vehicle speed and turning the air conditioning off. Also, when Range mode is selected, the balance of Direct4 front/rear drive torque distribution is also optimised for power efficiency. When driving in the low torque range, only the rear motor is used; the front motor is brought into play as the torque level increases. If any wheelspin is detected, normal AWD operation resumes.

A first for Lexus, this is a technologically packed piece of electric engineering that demonstrates the future of the brand and it does so in style. The SUV design delivers a sleek, compact exterior aesthetic while offering substantial style and space inside.

MODERN BRITISH ICON

BENTLEY'S CONTINENTAL GT TURNS 20 AND CONTINUES TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GT.

Following the acquisition of Bentley by Volkswagen in 1998, the fortunes of the luxury British marque were set to change forever. An investment of £500m was injected in to the business to create not only a modern, fit-for-purpose factory - which was so advanced at the time that little has changed today - but also the development of the first all-new Bentley motorcar since 1930.

Initially designated as the 'Mid-Sized Bentley', the car was to become the icon we know today, the Continental GT. Delivering a distinctive style and level of luxury and quality unseen in the GT world before its launch in 2003. Taking inspiration from historic examples - more specifically the R-Type Continental - the Continental GT differed vastly from the existing Continental R, bringing an entirely new offering to the Bentley customer base and broadening in considerably.

Pushing production and sales ten-fold, the Continental GT was a revolution for both the manufacturer and the industry. Harking a new era of luxury GT motoring, it pushed the boundaries of what the most discerning clients would come to expect.

As an all-new offering, the Continental GT not only introduced the new look Bentley to the world, illustrating a contemporary design ethos - which was undoubtedly modern but maintained a distinct hint of the marques iconic historic styling - but also required the development of an all-new engine, thus the spectacular 6.0-litre W12 was born.

Now sadly reaching the end of its life - with less than a handful of units left to buy - the W12 was the ideal power unit to pair with this luxurious grand tourer. Providing effortless power, it was perfectly poised to deliver a comfortable drive cross-continent with minimal effort. Packing a staggering 550 bhp and 650 Nm of torque, the original Continental GT was capable of a zero-tosixty-two time of just 4.8 seconds and top speed of 198 mph.

Combined with the beautifully crafted interior with its sleek veneer, flowing dash lines through the centre console and luxuriously plump bucket seats, the Continental GT immediately positioned itself at the pinnacle of the luxury GT segment and it had the sales figures to match.

Starting at £110,000, the GT also undercut the outgoing Continental R by over £60,000 bringing the once extremely limited access to the Bentley brand to a much wider audience. Despite this, every aspect of the car was designed and developed to be the very best, only the finest materials were used for the interior, every part still made by hand and the specifications at the height of performance at the time.

By the time the first production specification model reached the stand at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2003, Bentley had already taken over 3,000 deposits even though first deliveries wouldn't be until the end of that year. It was an instant success that delivered on every part of Bentley's brief for the car: widen the appeal of the brand; be both more sporting and affordable; have space for four with luggage and the performance of the likes of the Aston Martin DB7 and Porsche 911 Turbo; be designed, engineered and built in Crewe; and be delivered in just four years.

This example was the very first car to leave the Crewe production line with chassis VIN 20001. Finished in a classically British combination of Cypress Green exterior and Saddle hide interior with a stunning Burr Walnut wood veneer. Built in December 2003, it has remained in company ownership from the outset and enjoys being part of the Heritage Collection - which

Bentley are keen to maintain as useable, running machines and thus every vehicle in the collection is regularly run on the road to ensure each and every one continues to be enjoyed.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT

Now, following 20 years of development, the very latest range topping Continental GT Mulliner demonstrates just what is possible in the world of luxury grand touring. Combining the very best of everything the now extensive model range has to offer, from the performance of GT Speed to the luxurious opulence of GT Azure, Mulliner has it all.

Continuing the exquisite craftsmanship that the oldest automotive coachbuilder in the world is renowned for, Bentley's very own bespoke division, Bentley Mulliner is responsible for the design and build of the truly stunning Continental GT Mulliner. Offering clients a seemingly endless number of possibilities when commissioning their unique Bentley, each individual specification can be crafted to the smallest detail delivering exactly what you want from your new Continental GT.

From the very first iteration back in 2003, the GT has pushed the boundaries of what it is to be a luxury grand tourer, from the quality of materials and finish to the performance and build. Every aspect was crafted to be the very best it could be and now, the latest Mulliner model builds on this ethos to the nth degree.

Whether its a specific material you would like incorporated into the seats or used as a veneer, or a particular shade you want to see your beautiful new Bentley adorned in, the Mulliner model will deliver the pinnacle of grand touring with everything exactly as you want it down to the finest detail.

Sadly the story of the iconic W12 Bentley Continental GT is coming to an end with just a few of the impressive 6.0-litre units remaining to be purchased, but for now, the truly stunning performance remains the pinnacle of the model range. Boasting a

staggering 626 bhp and astronomical 900 Nm of torque, the W12 Continental GT Mulliner is capable of executing a zero-to-sixtytwo miles per hour time of just 3.5 seconds and whopping top speed of 208 mph. When you consider the level of luxury that this car affords with its elegant piano veneered interior complete with diamond quilted, contrast stitched linen and Beluga leather seats and weight of almost 2.3 tonnes, those figures become even more alarmingly impressive.

A host of exclusive design features separate the Continental GT Mulliner from the rest of the family. For the exterior, Mulliner enjoys the new ‘Double Diamond’ matrix grille at the front which defines the Mulliner signature style. This is complemented by matching front fender vents echoing the same silver and black design and with chromed Mulliner branding. Approaching and opening either doors reveals the other Mulliner design featuresSatin Silver mirror caps with Mulliner welcome lamps beneath, and illuminated outer door sills with the Mulliner text. The distinct exterior aesthetic is finished with unique 22” Mulliner wheels with self-levelling centre Bentley ‘B’ badge.

As you’ll expect, the interior cabin is one defined by luxury, and showcases a level of choice and customisation that only Bentley Mulliner can provide. There is a unique colour split which is exclusive to the car, offering a combination of primary and secondary hide joined by a third colour through a flowing design line. The Mulliner Driving Specification is fitted as standard, bringing the “Diamond in Diamond” quilting to the seats, door trims and rear quarter.

All of this luxury combines with the effortless performance

to deliver a magnificent driving experience in any and every situation. 20 years of development and progression have provided the latest Continental GT with technological advancements including computer-controlled chassis systems to ensure the very best combination of comfort and dynamism. Safer, easier and even more exciting to drive with a distinct appearance that maintains design cues from the original, the latest Continental continues to set the benchmark for what it means to be a luxury grand tourer.

A Pirelli Noise Cancellation System, air ionisers to purify the cabin, personal Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless phone charging, over-theair updates for the satnav maps, adaptive cruise control, night vision camera and pre-emptive driving adjustments are just some of the features you can enjoy as standard from your Continental GT Mulliner to provide the best driving experience. To push your grand tourer even further, opt for some of the extra options such as a phenomenal 20-channel Naim for Bentley for concert hall level audio should you want to enjoy something other than the beautifully smooth yet gutsy engine tone - which changes according to your drive mode choice.

The GT Mulliner is the epitome of luxury grand touring, delivering the most opulent comfort as you cruise along the road eating up the miles with ease thanks to that tarmac beating 6.0-litre W12. In 1935, Rolls-Royce would only supply the chassis and running gear of the car, with the body beautifully crafted by one of a variety of approved coachbuilders. This Phantom II example was bodied by H.J. Mulliner & Co Ltd of Chiswick, and is truly stunning. This Sedanca model (with a removable roof over the driver’s section), has been repainted in white from its original black and offers the kind of luxury interior you would expect of a 1930s Rolls-Royce finished in tan leather at the front and blue cloth in the rear.

It features a 7.7-litre straight-six engine that was paired directly to a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh for 2nd through to 4th gear which was a huge technological advancement over the Phantom I predecessor. It also received a cylinder head

replacement in 2015 with invoices to show the works undertaken totalling £10,953.

Inside, you can separate the rear section from the front with a glass screen which raises and lowers via an internal handle that is all in good working order. There’s plenty of room, and it also features a foldaway picnic table complete with hidden storage on both sides. The exterior is equally tidy as shown in the photography with the traditionally wire wheels adding an extra splash of style. This car, with a little work to get the monster engine running smoothly will be set and just as perfect for weddings, events and parties as it would be for a weekend picnic in the countryside or simply popping to the shops in style.

The capital has long been recognised as a desirable place to call home by both domestic and international buyers. In search of London’s most sought after addresses, best in class properties across the prime and super prime markets have remained remarkably resilient, given the economic backdrop according to Savills latest Q2 prime index.

Savills Frances McDonald details how London’s £5million-plus market has made a comeback after a slow first quarter and prime residential values are above their pre-pandemic levels, despite marginal falls.

LONDON STAYS STRONG

£5m-plus sales bounce back in the capital

The top end of the market has had a strong start to the year with a total 240 properties worth in excess of £5 million changing hands in the first six months of 2023 - a third of those transactions taking place in the golden postcodes of Chelsea, Kensington and Belgravia.

While this marks a fall of 21% compared to first half year sales in 2022, it is on par with the same period in 2021 and 45% above the first half year average of just 166 for the three years (2017-19) pre-pandemic.

The first quarter marked a slowdown after an intense period of activity from mid2021 as buyers refocused on city life. However, a backdrop of unsettling domestic and international economic indicators has meant that even the cash-driven very top end of the market is price sensitive, particularly given its discretionary nature. Momentum will only be maintained if buyers and sellers remain aligned in their expectations.

There’s also been a notable shift in the mix of properties selling. Apartments continue to account for a growing share of sales as pandemic memories fade, accounting for 44% of

£5 million-plus transactions across London year to date - partly a reflection of the number of world class new build schemes that are redrawing the prime map of London and the shift away from a time when larger homes with private outdoor space topped every buyer’s wish list.

Prime market resilience

Prime central London has held up better than outer prime London, indicating a growing divergence between cash and equity rich buyers and other groups in their ability to transact, and between the very top end of the market and lower value segments.

Prices across London fell by a marginal -0.2% on the quarter, and -1.0% on the year, according to the Q2 Savills prime London index, leaving values 3.9% above their pre-pandemic level.

Cash buyers who are not exposed to concerns around rising interest rates, understandably dominated demand in the second quarter. In fact, year to date, cash buyers have accounted for 71%

of prime central London deals and 35% in outer prime London, according to Savills records.

While London’s prime market continues to perform more strongly than expected, the most recent interest rate rises are likely to squeeze buyer budgets and increase price sensitivity, particularly in the more domestic outer prime locations where more buyers are dependent on borrowing. Sellers will need to price pragmatically to align with prevailing buyer expectations.

Mayfair (+1.1%), Westminster (+0.4%) and Marylebone (+0.2%), popular with pied-a-terre and international buyers were some of the strongest performers on the quarter. More domestic markets such as Richmond (-0.9%) and Holland Park (-1.0%) that outperformed during the pandemic have seen value falls over the first half of the year.

What remains the common denominator across both the prime and super prime markets is that best in class properties are continuing to fare best in more fragile market conditions. In fact, according to Savills latest index, properties considered in immaculate condition across prime central London command an average price of more than £2,000/ sq ft, 37% higher than those considered to be in a poor condition, compared to a premium of 25% around 10 years ago.

Often at the bottom of my clients’ list of considerations, lighting is actually the most important element of any interior scheme, transforming a space from mundane to magical. Good lighting can bring a room to life imbuing it with warmth and sparkle, whilst bad lighting can completely flatten an otherwise expensive interior scheme. Whether it's for enhancing productivity during tasks, accentuating specific features, or setting the perfect ambiance for relaxation, the right light fittings can make an enormous difference not only to the look of a space but, more importantly, to its ‘feel.’ From a designer’s perspective, its important to utilise a clever combination of lighting to achieve the best results in creating luxurious spaces.

The Importance of Illumination

The first part of designing a lighting scheme is to understand the significance of different types of lighting in creating a harmonious and visually appealing atmosphere. There is no need to ‘flood’ a room with light like Blackpool illuminations! The key

to a high-end scheme is to illuminate where necessary and if you can incorporate several dimmable circuits, that will provide you with multifunctional, ‘human-centric’ mood-setting opportunities. Use a combination of the following, ideally at different heights, to create a ‘layered’ effect:

1. Task Lighting: This is the practical aspect of lighting, ensuring that specific areas are well-lit for various activities. Task lighting is crucial for functional spaces such as kitchens, offices, and reading areas. Pendant lights, under-cabinet LED strips, and adjustable downlights are popular choices to achieve efficient task lighting and a good level of light.

2. Accent Lighting: To add drama and depth to your space, accent lighting comes into play. This type of lighting draws attention to architectural elements, artwork, or ornamental pieces, creating focal points that elevate the overall aesthetic. Track lighting, wall-mounted fixtures, and fully adjustable downlights are excellent options for accent lighting.

3. Ambient Lighting: Also known as general lighting, ambient lighting sets the overall mood and atmosphere in a room. It provides a soft and comfortable glow that allows you to move around the space effortlessly while creating a welcoming environment. Chandeliers, pendant clusters, and LED downlights are popular choices for ambient lighting.

The Latest in LED Technology

With advancements in technology in recent years, LED lighting has revolutionized the way we illuminate our living spaces, no longer creating the ‘dental surgery’ look! LED lights are not only energy-efficient but also offer

enhanced flexibility and durability. Here are some of the latest LED technology trends worth exploring:

1. Smart Lighting: Embrace the future with smart LED lighting systems that can be controlled remotely through smartphones or voice assistants. Adjust the intensity, colour temperature, and even create customized lighting scenes to match your mood and lifestyle. Smart bulbs and LED striplights can turn your home into a futuristic haven of light and colour. ledspace.co.uk

2. Tunable White LED: No need to be stuck with a static lighting scheme! Tunable white LED technology allows you to adjust the colour temperature of the light from warm to cool, mimicking the natural daylight cycle. Biodynamic lighting is adapted throughout the day to create a healthy circadian rhythm not only producing a great effect but also aiding wellbeing and sleep patterns. zuma.ai

3. Filament LED Bulbs: LED bulbs with filament designs have become a trend for those seeking a touch of nostalgia blended with modern efficiency. The vintage look of filament bulbs adds charm and character to various light fittings, from chandeliers to wall sconces, creating an irresistible blend of old and new. thevintagelightbulbcompany.com

Trending Light Fittings in the UK

1. Articulated Wall Lights: These offer a statement look and can be very useful to bring light to a central position over a table or a reading chair when required and out of the way when not. They look equally at home in an industrial-style, Scandi-inspired

or pared-back interior and provide a strong, architectural look. hausofinteriors.com

2. Maximalist Chandeliers: By way of contrast, timeless elegance meets contemporary luxury with crystal chandeliers. These dazzling fixtures not only serve as a stunning centerpiece but also create a mesmerizing play of light, filling the room with a delightful sparkle. Opt for modern interpretations with sleek designs or go for the classic allure of traditional crystal chandeliers to suit your interior style. Always choose one slightly larger than you imagine is required. purewhitelines.com

3. Minimalist LED Strips: Used by top-end designers, embrace the beauty of simplicity of minimalist LED strips that effortlessly blend into your interior while providing subtle yet effective lighting. Install them under cabinets, beneath stair treads, or behind mirrors and shelving to cast an ethereal, concealed lighting effect where the glow of light is visible but the fitting itself isn’t. ledspace.co.uk

4. Oversized Floor Lamps: Oversized floor lamps are commanding attention in luxury living spaces. These sculptural pieces not only provide functional lighting but also double as artistic statements, adding an element of drama and a little joy too. anglepoise.com
