The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie continues to grow Returning for its 28th year, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) will take place January 15th to 19th 2018. For the third consecutive year this major event will be ringing the changes, ready to welcome prestigious exhibitors, luxury brands and talented independents who will be showcasing the latest trends in technical and precious watchmaking. The central aisles will be extended for the arrival of Hermès, while a bigger Carré des Horlogers makes room for DeWitt, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud and Romain Gauthier. These new arrivals bring the total number of exhibitors to 34, with 18 Historic Maisons and 16 Carré des Horlogers brands,

all dedicated to achieving excellence in the measurement of time. Retaining the selectiveness and exclusivity that has underpinned its success for the past 27 years. “There is no intention of extending SIHH indefinitely. It will grow within carefully measured limits so as to preserve the values of excellence that have forged its reputation. It must also meet the expectations of its exhibitors and clients, both now and in the future,” commented SIHH Managing Director, Fabienne Lupo. By moving forward this way, SIHH accompanies the remarkable progression observed within the Fine Watch segment these past years. In keeping with this SIHH will also once again open its doors to the public for one day.

1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” Honouring the founder of the Lange Uhren GmbH, A. Lange & Söhne pays tribute to the individual who in 1990 brought precision watchmaking back to Glashütte. Comprising of a stoppable sweep seconds hand, a black enamel dial and a steel case the timepiece reflects the eminent heritage of the Saxon watchmaking dynasty. The sad news of Walter Lange’s death on the morning of the second SIHH day in 2017 shocked the world of watchmaking. Asked at the time how he intended to salute Walter Lange, Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid replied: “The best way to honour Walter Lange is to assure the continuity and the ongoing development of the company that he founded - in the way that he would have envisioned it.” Now, with the 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange”, A. Lange & Söhne is proving that a watch is capable of reflecting the intention and personality of a founder. The 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” with a black enamel dial and a steel case will be produced only once, making it as unique as the man whose name it bears. The 40.5-millimetre case of the 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” is made of stainless steel, a material that at A. Lange & Söhne has been reserved for only a very few exclusive and special timepieces. As well as this one-off watch, limited editions in yellow, white and pink gold will also be available. The steel version will be auctioned off for a charitable purpose in 2018. Walter Lange, always noted for his philanthropy, would have approved. The other limited editions will also have a stoppable jumping seconds hand that dates back to a 150- year-old invention first conceived by Ferdinand Adolph Lange. Many mechanical timepieces can be recognised by their “creeping seconds” hand. Depending on the balance frequency, the hand advances from second to second in five to ten steps. In short-time measurements, however, where seconds count in the literal sense, constant progression sometimes makes

it difficult to pinpoint the beginning and the end of an event. Conversely, there is a horological complication that allows the exact measurement of the smallest unit of time: the “jumping seconds”. An 1815 with jumping seconds likely corresponds to what Walter Lange would have deemed the perfect watch. It is totally reduced to the essence while impressing the enthusiast with a puristic yet technically exciting complication. The newly developed movement has a special calibre designation: L1924 referring to Walter Lange’s birth year. Additionally, the first three digits of the reference number, 297, recall his date of birth, 29 July. The three editions will be available as: 145 watches in white gold, 90 in pink gold and 27 in yellow gold. These uncommon numbers are derived from important milestones of the Lange family’s history. From 7 December 1845, when Ferdinand Adolph Lange originally established the company, exactly 145 years elapsed until 7 December 1990, the date on which Walter Lange registered Lange Uhren GmbH. Precisely 27 years will have passed between this date and 7 December 2017, the day on which the new model that pays tribute to Walter Lange is being unveiled.

M a rine Tor pi l l eur Military Continuing on from its Marine Torpilleur, Ulysse Nardin is releasing the Marine Torpilleur Military edition, a chronometer for a whole new generation of adventurer. Bold and modern, this is a direct descendant of the pocket chronometers used by the sea captains of 19th or beginning of the 20th century. Featuring the same Ulysse Nardin UN-118 in-house movement as the renowned Marine Chronometer, the Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military takes on a more imposing air, as if daring the wearer to rise to a new level of challenge. With two designs each take inspiration from the eternal elegance of vintage military timepieces. One with an eggshell white dial, whose outlined Arabic numerals enable quick reading of the time, matched by an elegant tan leather strap. The other in chic black, with orange Arabic numerals and superluminova-coated hands - ideal for legibility in the dark - and attached to the wrist with a black strap with orange stitching. Both editions feature an oversized crown, and a formidable 44 mm case with a steel sand-blasted finish, water-resistant to 50 meters, and stamped on the back with the distinctive Torpilleur. Limited to 300 models.

Marine Tourbillon Blue Grand Feu Since 1846, when a young Ulysse Nardin conceived of the first marine deck chronometers, the seafaring world has been an essential part of Ulysse Nardin history. The precision navigational instruments of Monsieur Nardin, valued by navies from the Sea of Japan to the Cape of Good Hope, are a constant source of inspiration for today’s watchmakers. The rare beauty of a blue Grand Feu enamel dial is the elegant flourish on a splendid new timepiece to join the iconic Ulysse Nardin Marine Collection. The self-winding UN-128 caliber is produced in-house in the workshops at Le Locle, Switzerland. Embodying the brand’s development and continued independence in the manufacture of its movements, it harnesses the properties of silicium technology, with a 60-hour power reserve and a magnificent flying tourbillon. From its position at 6 o’clock on the blue Grand Feu dial, the tourbillon is a highlight of this beautiful timepiece, and a glorious tribute to the

watchmaker’s continued pursuit of the technical cutting-edge. The cage, wheels, screws and hairspring of the flying tourbillon are produced entirely in-house by Ulysse Nardin, provided courtesy of the skilled craftsmen at Ulysse Nardin company Donzé Cadrans, whose expertise in creating handcrafted enamel dials is unrivalled. For this edition of the Marine Tourbillon, they have managed the highly challenging achievement of a blue Grand Feu enamel dial. Grand Feu enamel takes its romantic name from the incredible heat of a kiln, the “great fire” that is necessary to fuse the enamel powder, and the results are usually a pale cream color, so the deep oceanic blue of this dial is a true original. Complementing the elegance of the Grand Feu blue enamel dial, are the hands and roman numerals of the Marine collection, and the powerreserve indicator at 12 o’clock. The 43mm diameter case is water-resistant to 100 meters, and strapped to the wrist with a chic alligator strap.

Traditionnelle complete calendar Collection Excellence Platine The Collection Excellence Platine from Vacheron Constantin highlights an ageless star of the mechanical watchmaking scene: the complete calendar. Equipped with an in-house calibre, this classically elegant new Traditionnelle watch, which is limited to 100 individually numbered pieces, is crafted in platinum right the way through to the stitching of its strap. The aesthetic signature of this prestigious range is the 950 platinum attiring the case, the sand-blasted dial bearing the secret “Pt950” inscription between 4 and 5 o’clock, the folding clasp and even the topstitching on the dark blue alligator leather strap. For the pre-SIHH 2018, an eminently useful and refined horological complication – the complete calendar – adopts the understated elegance of the Traditionnelle range, magnified by the precious metal. Punctuated by gold bifacetted hands and hourmarkers, the pure display makes a perfect match with the blue Arabic numerals gracing the date and other calendar indications, while the platinum moon disc sets the seal on the unique nature of this model. The visual equilibrium and legibility of the dial are accentuated by the unusual arrangement of the day and month apertures, placed around the dial periphery, while the date is indicated by a slender blue central hand. Water-resistant to 30 metres, the 41 mm-diameter case of the Traditionnelle complete calendar Collection Excellence Platine houses the 308 components of Calibre 2460 QCL, a mechanical selfwinding movement entirely developed and manufactured by Vacheron vacheron-constantin.com

Constantin. Equipped with a 22 carats gold oscillating weight, it beats at the frequency of 4 Hz and ensures a 40-hour power reserve while driving the central hours, minutes and seconds, complete calendar (day, date and month), precision moon phase and age of the moon. The remarkably accurate moon-phase indication requires just one adjustment every 122 years (compared with three years for a simple moon phase).

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS

Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah

Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.

It’s safe to say many diving watches, or even sports watches for that matter are not used for purpose. As watches have become more of as fashion statement than simply functional, even the most specifically designed instruments enjoy an element of aesthetic embellishment beyond simple ergonomics. In the age of social media, one can easily see how important this is as a model can be made or broken by its visual impact - the response is often so immediate, the possibility of a style becoming a cult classic despite initial misgivings like the Daytona or even the original Royal Oak is very unlikely. As with most things in our digital age, especially fashion, which is very much linked to horology now; we are overwhelmed with new releases and limited editions to the point where the original, often unique, idea is lost amongst the bombardment of new information.

However, the beauty of this new age of readily available information is that it forces innovation. As with the music industry, the internet has opened the market up offering virtually free press and promotion. Newer, smaller independent brands can react quicker, deliver product quicker yet still reach the same audience as their slightly bumbling older compatriots. This competition has forced the longer standing and larger companies to become leaner and more savvy. Add an international economical downshift in the market, the landscape has very much changed for watchmaking and perhaps even heralded a welcome return to a client driven environment. Nonetheless, this doesn’t stop the brands evolving their product with cutting edge technology and materials. Omega are a good example of this idea in practice. An international, volume based Brand with genuine bonafide history offering, but not resting on many world firsts and market leading actions. Omega’s historic relationship with the Olympics, the Space Race and even Cinema as can be seen in the modern James Bond era is well documented. The brand had the foresight, and the monetary muscle, to purchase George Daniel’s Co-Axial escapement, arguably the single biggest move forward in the foundation of matchmaking for a century. This update now rests in virtually every mechanical timepiece across their range. How does this tie in to the modern age? Simply that most brands charge a premium for a new and exclusive innovation, adding an element of perceived exclusivity. However, Omega opted for the polar opposite in devising a mass product delivery that actually did what one would expect, and provided value to the client through volume, but still for an exciting new product. The perfect proponent for this ideal is the multi faceted sports watch appeal of their Planet Ocean collection. Falling under the Seamaster umbrella, the first collection was delivered in 2005 (incredibly over a decade ago now!) pulled in more elements from the speedmaster cases and added an new level of water resistance.

New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

WATCHES As climate change has become a major driving force behind socio-political conversations, the conservation of our blue planet has tied in nicely with the evolution of the Planet Ocean family. The Planet Ocean is easily the most modern timepiece Omega make, not referring to an age old design but rather creating a new lane using updated materials like ceramics and titanium alongside Omega’s own patented Sedna Gold and liquid metal alloys that create a more durable finish. Omega partnered with like minded foundations to create special series such as the now discontinued Good Planet edition raising awareness for the aforementioned conservation of our seas to 2017’s all ceramic Deep Black ETNZ series made in partnership with New Zealand’s Americas Cup team. Even James Bond wore one of the first designs in Skyfall! Maturing in design and style, the collection has been reduced now to two sizes; 43.5mm & 45.5mm. A stainless steel model is offered in both sizes including a chronograph option, as is a Titanium variant with striking orange rubberised insert on the bezel – orange being the most legible colour under water! Both versions come with either bracelets or textile straps with rubber bases made specifically to handle the exposure to water but the titanium models also utilise a sandblasted titanium dial, both very good looking and in keeping with the overall ruggedness of the design. The Sedna Gold variant plays to the luxury market carrying all the features to ensure water resistance but the mixture of Gold case and black dial provide a striking visual. The Deep Black series was a later addition and continues the popularity of black cased watches especially in line with the particularly well received Dark Side of the Moon Speedmaster collection. As with the Speedmaster model, the Deep Black watches are made entirely of black ceramic including the crown & helium escape valve. Offered in a variety of colour ways including striking red and blue but also a stealthy all black option. The latest

addition to this family is the edition made in partnership with the New Zealand Americas Cup team (pictured) with notable brushed dial. A very cool and on trend selection of watches that marry purpose of design with style to create a strong visual. The entire series carries a sapphire caseback to view the extraordinary movement within, which is perhaps where the real magic is. As the outer design has evolved, Omega have in turn updated the internal workings. The Co-Axial escapement is retained and the case is still water resistant to an astounding 600m but the method of how the mechanical movement is tested has been dramatically changed. Previously, these watches were independently chronometer certified by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) but this just qualified the movement. The design of the newer Master Chronometer movement carries antimagnetic properties as pioneered in the Aqua Terra 15,000 Gauss model, the most anti magnetic watch ever produced. Therefore, the new certificate needed to warrant this extras feature that implies a testing of more than the movement alone. In this instance, the METAS certification (Federal Institue of Metrology) have been employed for the first time by any watch company. This new testing process focuses on the entire cased watch and essentially attempts to offer a more rigorous system than before. Affirming this, an online link is provided with the warranty cards whereby the owner can see the actual results of his watch online. All in all, the Planet Ocean selection are a perfect embodiment of modern Omega; exquisitely engineered, housing state of the art watchmaking yet made to be a value based proposition. Omega have been delivering great product for years, never entirely fashionable but always relevant. It is just that…never too fashionable…that means the brand will continue steadily whilst others hit peaks and then troughs. New Cavendish Jewellers has been an official partner of Omega watches for over thirty years. We curate our selection of brands carefully and with pride, thus we invite you to visit us in-store and discover the entire Omega collection.

Royal Riads in Marrakech Prepare to step into a world like no other, where service is utterly impeccable, and memories and dreams are created in one fell swoop. Magical and truly enchanting, the Royal Mansour in Marrakech is a must stay in Morocco. Behind the pink hued walls, lies a lush, immaculately kept tropical oasis in which winding pathways lead to your own private riad accommodation. Honouring Morocco’s heritage crafts, artistic talent and architectural tradition, Royal Mansour is a place like no other. Located on a three and a half hectare estate, right in the heart of the city, the hotel’s 53 riads are connected by pathways within a private medina.

Landscape architect, Luis Vallejo, wanted to create a sophisticated tribute to the art of living, Moroccan-style. Lined with hundred-year-old olive-trees, Rue Abou Abbas El Sebti, the approach road to the hotel, gives access to property from three bronze and cedarwood gates. The first takes guests to a courtyard of pomegranate trees, in front of the hotel’s main building and restaurants; the second to the majestic white spa, framed by fragrant orange trees. And finally, the third leads to the olive-tree courtyard next to the Grand Riad. Through the year, guests can be transported to a far-away land through the scents of orange-flower, honeysuckle, jasmine, roses and, in autumn, the delicate scent of oleasters. Daturas,

bougainvillaea and carnations bring vibrant colour, while leafy palms provide much needed shade from the hot, year-round Moroccan sunshine. Adding to the peace, which is hard to believe given the hustle and bustle of the city behind the great wall, the only sound is that of birds and trickling water - a must in any Moroccan garden. The riads are the guests’ own private domain, each accessed directly from one of the medina’s many magical walkways. On the day of arrival, a butler will accompany you to your door – a beautiful unassuming door at that, which you will never guess the magic that lies behind. Across the hallway is an interior courtyard, complete with a tranquil water feature and stunning tiling, and, off that, a sitting room, bar and, in bigger riads, dining room. On the first floor, the bedrooms and bathrooms open onto a gallery looking down into the courtyard. Then, as the pièce de résistance, there’s a private roof terrace, with plunge pool, fireplace, and again in the larger riads, a tented space for private hammam treatments.

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO Each of the 53 riads has been individually furnished by craftsmen from Marrakech, Essaouira, Fès and Meknès, celebrating the very essence of Moroccan style and flair. Wood panelling, zellige tiling, tadlakt and plasterwork demonstrating the infinite variety of Moroccan decorative arts. Every Riad is different, owing to the selection of furniture, arrangement, the choice of fabrics and colours, and the lighting design. Fusing the old world with the new, incorporated into these traditional interiors is cutting-edge tech designed to ensure guests’ comfort, such as a touchscreencontrolled retractable glass roof, that’s ready to cover the courtyard terrace at the first drop of rain, or the smart air-con system, its workings invisible to the eye hidden behind filigree plasterwork. All Riads offer complimentary high-speed broadband and WiFi internet access and a number of LCD televisions with a vast selection of international satellite channels. You will instantly feel at home in your riad and the service, as with the whole of Royal Mansour is second to none. Guests staying in two bedroom or more Riads, can also take advantage of complimentary airport transfer and benefit from personalised service of a designated butler. Each butler has fantastic support from a backstage team that are there to tend to your every need both swiftly and discreetly. A system of underground tunnels

means that you will never see staff at your door or in the walkways of the medina. This level of care ensures that guests’ privacy is completely respected and comfort during your stay is paramount. Back at the main building, the design stays true to the style and symmetry of classical Moorish architecture, with distinctive geometric zellige tiles covering walls and pillars. Sleek tadlakt plaster gleams in contrast with intricate plasterwork and wrought iron lamps both compliment and highlight the carved wood of the large doors. Each space has its own feel, while also complimenting the rest of the hotel. From darker, more ambient rooms, to lighter and brighter each serves a purpose and allows guests to move around the property depending on their mood and occasion. A fantastic example of this are the two bars, one with silvery floral decorations and a magnificent gold-on-white foliage style ceiling which is perfect for taking some Moroccan tea; and the other a moody, wood panelled library complete with a fire place that makes for a great location for some pre-dinner drinks while listening to the live entertainment. Championing contemporary Moroccan artists, Royal Mansour is also a patron of traditional Moroccan arts and crafts, making it unique in the luxury hotel world and houses a collection of 550

TRAVEL paintings. Dining at the hotel is a decadent affair, and heralded Parisian chef Yannick Alléno has created three ‘Tables’ at Royal Mansour, allowing the guests to have a variety of options, as well as an extensive room service menu which can be enjoyed in the comfort of your riad should you wish a more homely, and private experience. La Grande Table Marocaine, celebrates the country’s cuisine with a varied menu of traditional salads, tangia, pastilla, meat and fish. Shoulder of lamb and Royal Mansour Pigeon pastilla are signature dishes, while the beef shank tangia is melt in the mouth and the fish freshly caught off the coast. The dining room bears high ceilings, curtains, and intricate lamps which cast a stunning glow on the tiled walls, creating a beautiful atmosphere. French options with a Moroccan twist are on offer at light and airy La Grande Table Française; and finally, La Table offers light meals and snacks all day from breakfast to dinner time. Enjoy the likes of roast lobster, free-range chicken, Red mullet tart, or even a classic club sandwich or burger. You can choose to sit in or out in the beautiful garden – a fantastic choice for breakfast where you can indulge in the huge array of pastries and home-made cakes, as well as fresh egg dishes,

and other breakfast fare all served with the perfect service Royal Mansour is renowned for. You will find it very difficult to miss the patisserie counter, a feast for all the senses. There is also a dining area by the large pool, and guests can choose to hire their own poolside pavilion, so they can lounge in the sunshine with every need tended to and even enjoy a spa treatment! Of course, while extremely tempting to stay in the tranquil haven of the Royal Mansour’s grounds, it is well worth stepping out to explore this vibrant and culturally full city. One location in particular is the newly opened Musee Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech. Dedicated to the iconic work of the legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, the museum is a fascinating insight to the designer’s life and work and only opened in October last year. Showcasing some of YSL’s many couture gowns and costume jewellery creations, the museum is not only a dedication to the famous designer but also those who played a key role in his life whether as a business partner or someone he took inspiration from. These temporary exhibits of work will change every 6 months and use key pieces from YSL’s own private collection further defining the designer as a true artist and collector at heart.

Rue Yves Saint Laurent, 40090 Marrakech, Morocco | 10:00 am to 6:00 pm except Wednesdays | museeyslmarrakech.com

TRAVEL Beautifully executed, the main exhibition room has been painted black to highlight the carefully curated garments, projections of YSL’s quotes and images of models wearing his creations. Particularly interesting is the large timeline of the French designer’s life, stretching from his birth in Algeria and across his illustrious career in the fashion industry. The museum is situated next to La Jardins Majorelle another important part of YSL’s life and can be visited with a combined ticket to both the museum and the garden for just 180 Moroccan Dirhams. The Majorelle Garden in Marrakech is one of the most visited places in Morocco. It took the French painter Jacques Majorelle forty years to create, and today lies in the heart of the red city housing numerous exotic species of trees, plants and flowers. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé discovered the Majorelle garden in 1966, during their first stay in Marrakech. In 1980, the pair bought the garden and saved it from a hotel project that would have meant its end. The new owners decided to live in the villa of the artist, renamed Villa Oasis and restored the garden to create the vision that Jacques Majorelle once saw. A team of 20 gardeners works every day to maintain the garden and its 300 flora as well as its ponds and fountains. The painter’s studio has been transformed into a fascinating Berber museum open to the public and in which the personal collections of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé are exhibited showcasing the traditional Berber way of life from jewellery and clothing to cooking instruments and textiles. There is a memorial for both Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in the gardens and their ashes have been scattered in the gardens of their villa. After looking at the beautiful gowns and jewels you may be inspired to go shopping for your own treasures. The bustling courtyard of Jemaa el-Fna is just a stone’s throw from the Royal Mansour and is filled with merchants, entertainers and locals providing a lively atmosphere 24 hours a day. Tucked away behind the square and in a maze of pathways and alleyways, some covered and some not, is nothing short of a complete assault of the senses. The smells, noises and colours from the many

Aladdin’s cave style stalls selling all kinds of wares from intricately beaded cushion covers and lanterns to endless leather goods such as shoes, bags and belts make it incredibly hard to take in at first. Bartering is encouraged, and the sellers play along – just be sure to walk away if you aren’t happy with the price, you will soon find them rushing to offer you a better deal or even finding another seller further down with a similar item. The maze of souks feels endless and sometimes chaotic but in a good way. There are plenty of tourists here, but also numerous locals picking up their own wares to take back and sometimes sell in different regions. Open for lunch and dinner, Le Jardin is the perfect stop off during the madness. Hidden in the labyrinth of the Medina, Le Jardin is a magical oasis located within a beautifully renovated 16th century building. Completely unassuming from the entrance, the garden opens before you with a décor of emerald green tiles, tables and lights creating a chic atmosphere and a fantastic terrace to boot. Menu highlights include well-priced tagines and a great mixed grill, washed down with lots of Moroccan tea of course.

Royal Mansour’s Special YSL Package: Starting from 26,000 MAD (approx £2,080) and based on two people sharing a room, guests can enjoy the following: • 2 nights’ in a Superior 1 bedroom Riad. • Breakfast and dinner at La Grande Table Marocaine restaurant. • Free entry to the YSL Museum (incl. Highlights include smoked salmon, king’s cure; and lobster bisque to start. Before moving on to mains such as Lemon sole meuniere, smoked salmon, wild mushrooms; the sirloin or ribeye Kobe beef cooked on traditional Japanese Robata grill or with Ishiyaki hot stones at your table, served with dipping sauces; and Slow cooked steak & truffle pudding. Harrods New Roastery and Bake Hall The first phase in the two-year transformation of Harrods’ historic Food Halls is now open. The new Roastery and Bake Hall is the largest redevelopment of its historic Food Halls in more than 30 years. Housing a from-scratch Bakery and coffee Roastery, Tea Tailor, Gourmet Grocery and new destination Coffee Bar, The Roastery and Bake Hall is the first phase of The Taste Revolution – a two-year restoration project that will transform Harrods’ Food Halls for the future. Launching alongside The Roastery and Bake Hall is Harrods new standalone food-to-go concept store, Roast and Bake, located on Basil Street. Its menu features coffee freshly roasted at Harrods by Master Roaster Bartosz Ciepaj and fresh Viennoiserie straight from the ovens of the new Bakery. A selection of the finest sandwiches, salads and snack pots are also available for busy London foodies to enjoy on-the-go. The redevelopment sees the world-famous department store act as a onestop shop for all your food needs and desires. Harrods began life as a wholesale grocer and tea merchant in east London, first opening its doors in 1834, so the new Food Hall is a welcome addition to the store, further reinforcing the company’s remarkable history as a pioneer in food retail. The redevelopment has been driven by Harrods’ Director of Food & Restaurants Alex Dower and his team of food experts, including 150 in-house chefs. Dower says, “The Roastery and Bake Hall forms the first phase of The Taste Revolution and we cannot wait for local foodies to discover what the room has to offer. Nowhere else will there be such a combination of skill, creativity, experience, outstanding service and variety of food offered in the beauty of a Grade II*-listed environment.” At the heart of the Roastery and Bake Hall, Harrods’ newly appointed Master Roaster, Bartosz Ciepaj, and his skilled team will roast and grind coffee beans in full view of customers. While the from-scratch bakery, led by Master Baker Lance Gardner, offers 15 varieties of bread, as well as pastries, cakes and biscuits, which are freshly baked throughout the day – heralded by a bell that will announce fresh creations leaving the ovens every 30 minutes. In the centre of the new room, Harrods’ grand Art-Deco-style Coffee Bar provides a stylish destination for discerning foodies to enjoy Harrods’ freshly baked goods and roasted coffee. There will be three further concepts launched as part of The Taste Revolution, launching during 2018 and 2019.

Happy New Year! Welcome to January, the strangest month in the calendar. All the festivities are over, summer is miles away and it’s time to return to reality. Never fear though, it’s a new year and a fresh chance to keep to those resolutions we always make, the most popular of which are often to stop drinking. Well, you’re in luck because you don’t need to give up cocktails just yet, I’m going to share with you some of my favourite, nonalcoholic libations to help you stay on the wagon… at least until the end of the month. First of all, I’m going to let you in on a little secret – you can actually substitute alcohol in many of the more popular cocktails! If you crave a refreshing mojito, you can substitute the Rum for Apple Juice, if you fancy a Margarita, swap out the Tequila for grapefruit juice and a little almond syrup, the list goes on. However, if you want to impress your friends and encourage more of your comrades to forego the booze with you, I have some wonderful recipes for you to try. For celebratory occasions, serve up a Ginger & Peach Belini: Slice and peel a white peach and a small knob of ginger, and chuck them in a blender together. When you have your puree, add 20ml to a fluted glass and top up with ginger beer, garnish with a slice of peach in the glass and serve. Simple, easy and effective! When you want something a little richer, shake up 2 spoons of black cherry jam, 5ml of balsamic vinegar, 15ml freshly squeezed lemon juice, 15ml of acacia honey and 40ml cloudy apple juice, strain into a rocks glass over ice and garnish with a black cherry. We support going dry for January, both as a way to save money and also to help your body recover after

a draining holiday season. In all of my bars, Wringer + Mangle London Fields, wringer + Mangle Spitalfields and The Hoxton Pony, we offer a huge variety of non-alcohol and low alcohol drinks, which are available all year round. From fresh juices and smoothies all the way through to tailor made mocktails based on our guests preferences. While making and serving alcoholic drinks has made up much of my career, my main focus is always on the guests experience and we go the extra mile when our guests are opting out of imbibing booze. This January, if you have decided to go dry, why not also do it for a good cause and help out charities with events such as Dryathalon for Cancer Research Uk. Have a quick search of the web for who’s doing what this January and get sponsored to do something you were probably going to be doing anyway.

THAI SQUARE With branches all over the capital from the City to Islington, award-winning restaurant group Thai Square serves up a variety of Thai dishes from Panang Curry to spicy Drunken Noodles. First founded in 1996, the original restaurant is based on the Strand, and the chain has continued to serve up authentic dishes in Thai-inspired surroundings ever since, and even has three restaurants just outside London. The Trafalgar Square branch is perfect for those looking for something to eat before or after a trip to the many museums in the area or even a show. Just a stone’s throw away from the historic Nelson’s Column and the four lions statues the flagship branch has a wonderfully warm atmosphere and is split into two open levels with a large spiral staircase adjoining the two. The regularly changing menu features a high range of dinners and sumptuous set menus including the Gold Set Menu which is just £40.00 per person, or £36.00 per person without soup. The first course consists of delicately marinated aromatic duck prepared using herbs, with a crispy skin and tender shredded meat, accompanied by hoi-sin sauce, steamed pancakes, cucumber and spring onions. Before moving on to

the famous Tom Yum Goong Spicy Prawn Soup. The menu allows you to pick one main dish a person and tempting delights include King Scallops and Tiger Prawns with Black Pepper and Garlic Sauce; and Nua Yang Gang Kiew green curry cooked in coconut milk, with aubergines, bamboo shoots, long beans, sweet basil leaves and topped with Char-grilled sirloin steak. All dishes are accompanied by mixed vegetables with garlic and soya and steamed Thai Jasmine rice. The cuisine is known for it delicious mango desserts and this set menu doesn’t disappoint with Koa Neaw Mamuang to finish, a fresh mango, sticky rice and coconut ice cream. Of course, that is just one of the many set menus, and they act as a great way to try a number of Thai Square’s signature dishes in one hit. Other highlights of the a la carte menu include the Thai Mixed starters; Salt and Pepper Squid; Jungle Curry; and the grilled Sirloin Steak Weeping Tiger. There’s plenty of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes to choose from so whatever you choose you won’t be disappointed. Wash it all down with some Thai wine or beer, or even one of the restaurant’s many cocktails. There is also a lively bar located downstairs making it perfect for nights out with friends or colleagues.

Afternoon Tea

Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square Step back in time to the roaring 20s at the elegant Rotunda Lounge in the Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square. Located at the heart of the hotel, the beautiful, open space is set beneath a stunning domed ceiling offering lunch, afternoon tea and drinks at the Rotunda Bar. Opened in 1922 and built for £1million, a huge sum at the time, the magnificent Grade II listed building was designed by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Cooper and was formerly the Port of London Authority HQ at Tower Hill. Steeped with history and having survived extensive bomb damage during the Second World War, the spectacular building is the perfect location for a spot of decadent afternoon tea. The Bright Young Things Tea is priced at just £45.00, or £55.00 with a glass of Delamotte Brut Champagne, and £65.00 with a glass of Charles Heidsieck Clos Des Millenaires 1995 Brut Champagne. Beautifully presented, to match the surroundings and pianist in the centre of the room, the tea begins with a selection of delicate sandwiches including Chicken coronation with curry mayonnaise and allysum flowers; Heritage Beetroot; Salmon Rillettes; Roasted Beef with pink peppercorn sauce; and moreish Egg and Truffle.

Service is impeccable as you would expect for a fine dining experience and guests can choose to have a refill of their favourite sandwiches. Moving on to the French pastries, and the tea suggestion is a wonderfully light Cloud Tea that has rich caramel tones. Highlights of the innovative display include Pistachio, blackcurrant & violet created with pistachio chantilly, blackcurrant & violet jelly; Mango, coconut & ginger - citrus mousse, mango jelly, coconut & ginger dacquoise; and the decadent Chocolate & salted caramel with salted butterscotch, Guanaja chocolate mousse. The lime & raspberry jelly pannacotta also adds a touch of theatre to the proceedings with absinthe torched sugar placed on top to create an unusual twist. A selection of traditional homemade scones come served warm in a box with Devonshire clotted cream and seasonal jams. Tea is regularly refreshed throughout, and you can opt for different variations. We highly recommend the Monkey Paw with its clean and refreshing flavour thanks to its delicate, downy buds and the Malawi White Peony, a fragrant whole leaf white tea picked in the fields of Malawi.

Now, with the launch of the 2018 model, an all new monster has emerged. Following just one previous overhaul in its life, this is big news for the bold off-roader, especially with claims from the company that this is the most capable SUV ever. Its incredible offroad capabilities and ability for open-air driving combined with such iconic Jeep design - which is thankfully maintained in the update - make this a formidable power in all-round usability. Add to this updates to the cars safety and technology features along with specific technical enhancements such as two advanced 4x4 systems, new Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case, Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limitedslip differential and electronic sway-bar disconnect and you begin to get a good idea just how much has gone in to this reimagining of an icon. Having the ability to seamlessly venture from driving in ruggedchic style in an urban environment to the most rural you could imagine ready to get the tough paintwork a little dirty and put the car through its paces is something that isn’t as readily available on the market as you might imagine, and certainly not for the price. This is an incredible piece of engineering that simply gets better with age, and Jeep have had plenty of time to work on it. The beauty of this car is how well it adapts to any situation. If you happen to find yourself on Malibu Beach for example, simply strip the roof and you are left with the ultimate open-top beach toy perfect for transporting all the necessary wares for a day by the sea or in fact hosting your own party thanks to the convenient

all-weather sound system. Equally, if you wind up a little closer to home with a likely bout of heavy rain or dare it be said, snow, you can rest assured that the Wrangler is more than sufficiently equipped to deal with the situation. You could even add an aftermarket winch should you feel it necessary to show off to other road users whose car may not have performed so well and wound them up in a sticky situation. This is the meaning of go anywhere driving, you would be hard pushed to get yourself in to a position in this car that you couldn’t get out of.* *Disclaimer: Doing something stupid somewhere that you shouldn’t be doesn’t count. This all new design applies continued instantly recognisable features adapted to modern styles and demands whilst maintaining the perfect balance between form and function. The keystone grille remains following subtle changes - not only bringing it up to date, but softening the cartoon-like image it’s predecessor possessed whilst the unmistakable circular front headlamps and rectangular rear sit proudly with a stylish makeover. It wouldn’t be a Wrangler if it didn’t maintain it’s ‘open-top’ appeal and thankfully, the simple removable body continues to offer the perfect all-weather platform. Driving has never been better in a Wrangler. The all-new design includes a complete overhaul of the mechanical makeup. New engines paired with updated gearbox and suspension setups allow for vastly improved on-road driving as well as offering even further off-road ability. jeep.co.uk

Judging by the current information available with regard to the US market release, we are set to receive a continuation of the impressive 3.6-litre V6 unit along with the potential of a new 3.0-litre EcoDiesel to replace the current 2.8 block. There will always be one winner in that competition though, so there’s no need to wait for the 2019 release of the diesel variant. Paired with the updated bodywork which aims to provide the most rugged offering ever seen on a Wrangler, complete with four skid plates and bars - Rubicon models also benefit from the use of heavy gauge tubular steel rock rails to curtail potential body damage inflicted while out on the trail - this is a go-anywhere car with a purpose and is ready for anything you can throw at it. Technology has also never been better in this car, with a complete rethink of the Wrangler’s entertainment package. Three new Uconnect systems become available for the first time, delivering communication, entertainment and navigation in one place like never before. This full-colour LED system is offered in a choice of 5.0, 7.0 or 8.4 inch touchscreen guise with pinch and zoom capability and hugely improved connectivity. It’s not just in the entertainment department where Jeep have taken steps to bring the Wrangler up to date. This car also offers more than 75 additional active and passive safety and security features making the options list a much more inviting affair. This truly is the most versatile all-round package that has ever been offered in the Wrangler guise with endless customisation posibilities and an all important update in the interior quality on offer. It is no longer just a vehicle set for a world of utilitarian actions, this is a car that will appear at home on the streets of London, beaches of Miami and coastal stretches of Southern France. Jeep have really uped the game with this 2018 release. Lets hope for some more to come.

1973 Triumph TR6 POA

Great, British, Triumph 1973 Triumph TR6

Triumph’s TR series began life with the unveiling of the TR2 at Geneva in 1953. The resulting cars in the series up to the TR6 all evolved from here and maintained the original British roadster ideals. The open-top and compact design made for a winning formula, pushing the TR6 to become the best selling in the series until the TR7, but that’s not half as good looking. This fine example is presented in right hand drive which is

impressive in itself as only ten percent of all TR6’s sold were for the domestic market. It has recently undergone a full restoration which must be seen to be fully appreciated. The works carried out on this car have not only been extensive, but have been completed to a very high standard with photographs and invoices of every stage. Not only cosmetically is this a fantastic example, but under the suitably green metallic coachwork sits a full engine rebuild complete with stage three upgraded head, fast road camshaft and twin SU carburettors. Electric fuel pump and a six branch extractor with straight through exhausts also feature alongside uprated driveshafts, electronic ignition, electronic rpm gauge and overdrive in 3rd and 4th gears. As you might imagine, the result is a beautiful drive that sounds incredible. Inside, the contrast tan interior perfectly completes the stylish appeal that this car offers. A classic British roadster perfect as a weekend car or even an everyday pleasure, it comes with a recent black mohair soft top and hood bag as well as the factory hard top, so there’s no excuse when the weather turns. No corner has been left untouched on this car, it is a truly excellent example with all the possible extras such as the rear anti-roll bar. The previous owner has been the proud guardian for 18 years and the car is showing 76,000 miles from new.

SAVILLS

What will the changes to stamp duty mean for first time buyers? with James Diaper, Associate Director, Savills Hampstead

As it isn’t possible to borrow against a stamp duty charge, this will help reduce some of the pressure at the time of completion and was welcomed by aspiring first time buyers. But funding stamp duty payment is far from the greatest challenge faced by first time buyers, particularly in the high value markets. Across the UK the average first time buyer

deposit now stands at £25,652, compared to an average of £99,753 in London - an increase of over £32,000 compared to just five years ago. Accumulating a deposit clearly presents a much greater hurdle than raising money for stamp duty, so the recent change was described by many commentators as a case of ‘every little helps’, particularly in London.

Savills Hampstead | 020 7472 5000 | savills.co.uk

SAVILLS Additionally, a number of first time buyers in higher value markets will not benefit at all, since the exemption does not apply for those buying over £500,000 and they continue to pay full rate of stamp duty. In the year to September 2017, 1 in 4 of London’s first time buyers bought a property worth £500,000 or more. Some 10,600 first time purchases in London were at this level, over three times as many as across the rest of the UK as a whole. Over the past five years, London’s first time buyers have become increasingly confined to more affluent households, but even these buyers are struggling to keep up with house price growth. This is due to the deposit requirement rising so sharply in the capital, despite buyers increasing their borrowing towards the limits allowed by mortgage regulation. While slowing rates of house price growth and the recent cuts in stamp duty will be a relief for would-be homeowners, accessing the housing market is likely to remain a significant challenge right across London. This would point towards continued reliance on the ‘bank of mum and dad’ and ongoing pressure on the private rented sector for others. However, parents may just be more willing to help out now, particularly as the majority will not see a portion

of their cash will going to the Treasury. Although the changes to stamp duty will help to alleviate some of the financial pressures for first time buyers, we anticipate it will have little impact on the London property market over the course of 2018.

Outside space has always been a sought-after commodity, whether it’s acres of land or a balcony with pleasant views. Most property searchers have a few items on their list when looking for a new home, with some form of outside space usually near the top. But remember, gardens, balconies and terraces aren't just eye candy; they also add value to properties. Buyers' attitudes towards, and appetite for outside space often comes down to the area where the property is located. As the chart above shows, the most common type of property in E14 is a flat. This means that a significant number of homebuyers will expect ideally a terrace, but at least a balcony where you can grow some tomatoes.

In E14 there are approximately 82,600 people living across 700 hectares of land. This means that the population density is 117.2 people per hectare. To put that in the national context, it scores 5/5, five being the most densely populated areas. We can therefore classify our area as urban, which means residents' will have very limited choices when it comes to outside space. The demand for open space in E14 is essentially down to the density of housing in the area. Outside space will differentiate your property from others on the market, but quality is more important than quantity. If you'd like to know how to make the most of what you've got, please pop into my office so I can give you the inside track. Spencer Fortag

For this month's market update, we've decided to take a look at what percentage of total sales each house type accounts for each quarter. Whilst it doesn't show the actual number of sales, it's very useful for seeing what each property type is contributing to the total level of transactions. It also permits year-on-year comparisons, which negate the impact of seasonality.

The mix of tenure of properties is a substantial yardstick of the attributes of homes in a local market. One of the best parts of the planning system in the UK is that social housing is heavily mixed in with the private stock so we don't get large geographical divides between people as is the case in urban France. This also shows how many people are renting, which has gone up nearly everywhere in the last ten years.
