Concentrate too hard in one area and you will find yourself snowed under in no time, so try and plan your weeks to maximise the amount you can get done without sacrificing. There is nothing worse than everyone heading out for a Christmas drink whilst you are stuck in the office doing paperwork or having to head to the shops because you haven’t started the present haul yet. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, just remember it will all be worth it in the end.

Woolwich Print Fair 17 - 20 November
Running from 17-20 November 2016 at the Royal Arsenal Riverside in Woolwich, the Woolwich Print Fair has been curated by Brocket Gallery London in collaboration with Berkeley Homes. Offering original, affordable prints alongside demonstrations, artist tours and advice on how to start an art collection, the fair brings together the central London gallery, which specialises in supporting early to mid-career artists, with the capital’s biggest housebuilder, Berkeley Homes, to create a new cultural venue at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich. They plan to bring accessible and dynamic works of art to one of the capital’s hottest emerging
districts. When Crossrail opens in 2017, Woolwich will be just 20 minutes from Bond Street. With over 50 specialist artists and exhibitors, the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair will be the only print fair in London to deal solely in contemporary printmaking. It will draw on a rich historic relationship between the arts and old or abandoned military buildings. Venice uses the city’s own Arsenale during their art Biennale and the Royal Arsenal will provide a similar extraordinary setting for a fair which is set to grow in size, ambition and popularity over the coming years.

Lord Mayor’s Show and Fireworks 12 November
The 2016 Lord Mayor’s Show is on Saturday November 12th, however the build-up has been going since the middle of September after the election of the new Lord Mayor. The history of the Show dates back to 1215 when King John tried to win London to his side by letting it choose its own Mayor, but he insisted that every new Mayor must leave the safety of the City of London, travel up the river to distant Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown. Over the centuries this troublesome journey became one of London’s favourite rituals. It moved from river barges to horseback and then into the magnificent State Coach, and around it grew the rowdy and joyful medieval festival that became known as the Lord Mayor’s Show. The ancient pageant is now bigger than ever. An institution in itself, it hasn’t missed a year since Wellington’s funeral blocked the whole city in 1852. The modern procession is over three and a half miles long and fills the whole space between Bank and Aldwych from 11am until about 2.30pm, cheered by a crowd of around half a million people and watched live on the BBC by millions more. While there are no sword fights these days, the floats are grander than ever and it’s a great day out for everyone. lordmayorsshow.london

EFG London Jazz Festival 11-20 Nov Southbank
The EFG London Jazz Festival is London’s biggest pan-city music festival, highly acclaimed for showcasing a heady mix of talent from all around the world. Widely acknowledged for delivering world-class artists and emerging stars, the Festival returns this month to continue to take jazz to a massive audience, in one of UK’s landmark music events. Created in 1992 by live international music producers, Serious, the festival emerged from the long-standing Camden Jazz Week which was created in 1970; with the active support of the London Arts Board (now Arts Council England, London). Serious aimed to take a mix of international and British artists and provide a commitment to education activity. The aims of the festival still remain the same today; celebrating the place of jazz in a city which is at ease with its rich cultural diversity, and drawing in a multitude of venues across London who present the music, week in, week out, throughout the year. Alongside this exists the registered charity, Serious Trust, which has been established to support the next generation of artists and audiences through artist development, learning and participation and commissioning programmes. efglondonjazzfestival.org.uk | serious.org.uk

KEN KESSLER
Dress Watches Ken Kessler
Are watches seasonal? Only if you consider that the summer begs for the wearing of water-resistant timepieces which will survive vacation pursuits. One might also assert that this time of year is the period when watches enjoy increased awareness because of gift-giving. There is, however, another justification for identifying “occasional” watches at year’s end: the profusion of dressy Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties. Long gone are the days when the social calendar was a rigidly-defined sequence of events, though the more traditionbound elements of British society do their best to encourage the continuation of soirees straight out of the 1950s. From Tatler to the advice column in The Spectator, vestiges of a world remain where the correct attire and comportment mattered. And that means right down to the wrist watch. This may seem an alien concept at a time when low-rent, Eurotrash-types and uncultured arrivistes are happy to turn up tieless at “black tie” events, wearing dinner jackets over torn jeans - and these creatures, protected by virtue of their “edginess”, now form the majority of guests. But one lives in hope that David Niven and Deborah Kerr might some day replace Kanye West and Kim
Kardashian as role models. Especially when it comes to watches. My loathing of bling is exceeded only by my distaste for Coldplay, lamb and high humidity, but I do understand the need to address the peacock in all of us when it comes to “dressing to the nines.” In this respect, West and his bitch - or should that be Kardashian and her bitch? - are right on point, because today’s diamond-encrusted watches are merely the cocktail watches of the 1920s on steroids. Those delicate, fingernail-sized timepieces, exclusive to ladies, have grown in size and crossed the gender barrier. Although the world is awash with jewellery watches with six-figure price-tags and £10 quartz movements, the respected watch-only houses, too, are happy to cover every square millimetre of case, dial and bracelet with gems ranging from the finest diamonds to sapphires, emeralds and any other stones that might catch your or their fancy. But so rarefied is the market, and so savvy are today’s watch buyers that the lines are blurred, and the watches from the jewellery houses are now being designed by horological geniuses, while the pavéd timepieces from the traditional houses enjoy gem-setting worthy of the diamond specialists. Given my contempt for the

KEN KESSLER entire genre, I shan’t name names, but then I needn’t fear the repercussions of my insults: every single watch house at work today, above a certain price point, has diamond-encrusted monstrosities to worry your Amex. None are guilt-free. And I have to keep reminding myself that taste is subjective. As is the lack of. If that is the route you care to take during the party season, the watch world is cluttered with oversized models bearing diamonds in the hundreds and carat weight in to the high double figures more is, well, more. There are even enough watches with price tags over the £1m mark to be described as a “surfeit of riches”, rather than a choice of one or two. Suffice it to say, you will want to factor in the presence of a bodyguard, lest you suffer the indignity of being robbed as per Ms Kardashian. But there is a flipside, and it is the more appealing of the two if your ego is not on a par with that of, say, Mariah Carey. They play right into the hands - or should that be on the wrists? - of those for whom “black tie” means discretion for the males, with traditional dinner jackets, white shirts, suitable neckwear and shiny black shoes, while the women are allowed to bring colour to the affair, or opt for a LBD: the classic dress watches. For individuals who respect the rules of dress, the most obvious watches are the defaults, watches called “timeless” with due recognition of the irony. One will never make a mistake in a sartorial sense if a dinner jacket’s sleeve slides up to reveal a Patek Philippe Calatrava, a Vacheron Constantin Patrimony, JaegerLeCoultre’s sublime Reverso, an ultra-slim Piaget or anything dressy that says A. Lange & Söhne, Breguet, Bulgari or Blancpain.
Those feeling more adventurous might look to the auteur watchmakers who have emerged in the last 30 years, but who respect good taste. Any time-only device from Parmigiani Fleurier, De Bethune, F.P. Journe, Roger Dubuis, H. Moser, Laurent Ferrier or the like will not offend the Savile Row tailor who cut your suit. For the ladies who think that “flash” is only suitable as the name of a comic book superhero, the distaff classics include the abovelisted Reverso, the immortal Cartier Tank and - with or without gems - anything that says Harry Winston, Hermès, Graff, Piaget, Tiffany, De Grisogono, Backes & Strauss or Van Cleef & Arpels. My dress attire? On those rare occasions when I am forced to resemble a maître d’, I opt for a slim, round, white gold vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre, a discreet Cartier Tank, an Omega Constellation in rose gold or a 1956 Patek Philippe Calatrava. But there is one rule I prefer never to overlook when concerned with even the smallest detail. Just as one must never wear brown shoes in the city (so they tell us and which I choose to ignore), so should the strap on one’s dress watch be changed to black, if only for that evening. But what if you’re feeling mischievous and you want to confound the snobs? Find yourself a nice, fat, platinum Rolex Day-Date with diamond indices or even a diamond bezel, on a black strap rather than a bracelet, for the best of both worlds: a hint of bling and a streak of convention. You can confuse further your fellow partygoers by claiming you made your money in the Texas oilfields. Just like the watch’s most famous wearer: Dallas’ Jock Ewing. And nobody ever kicked him out of the Oil Barons’ Ball.

Lange 1 Time Zone On 25 October 2016, A. Lange & Söhne presented a special edition of the Lange 1 Time Zone in honey gold, and the date is no coincidence. It recalls the presentation of the first Lange collection 22 years ago in the Dresden residential palace. The Lange 1 Time Zone has ranked among the most popular models of the Lange 1 watch family since 2005. The clearly organised dial delivers a single-glance reading of home time and the time in a second time zone. The time zone is set with a lateral pusher and advances the rotating city ring with the 24 place names from west to east. On the ring, Dresden instead of Berlin as in the standard version - represents Central European Time. The case in 18-carat honey gold has a diameter of 41.9 millimetres. The exclusive material is harder than other gold alloys, while the lavishly hand-finished manufacture calibre L031.1 is assembled twice and has a power reserve of three days. Limited to 100 watches, the Dresden edition of the Lange 1 Time Zone is available exclusively in the 17 A. Lange & Söhne boutiques. Lange 1 Time Zone £37,800 | alange-soehne.com

NEW CAVENDISH JEWELLERS
Your New Timepiece with Jitesh Shah
Jitesh Shah is a Director at New Cavendish Jewellers, Marylebone High Street’s exclusive destination for Haute Horology & Exquisite Jewellery. Official agents for many of the world’s leading watch Brands alongside independently curated jewellery focusing on Diamonds & precious stones. Established in 1982, New Cavendish Jewellers is one of Marylebone’s oldest & still independent retailers.
Omega as a brand is a strange one; enjoying entirely more history, innovation and substance than the most of the usual giants of horology but for some reason, not always deemed as on trend as some of their competitors. Their collaboration with the Olympics is world renown while since 1996, they have become the official watch brand of the James Bond franchise, no small accomplishment. The collections have always been very well designed and well presented, typically based on some genuine element of Omega’s history, most notably delivered in their Speedmaster family. This collection really caught the world’s attention when it became the first watch worn on the Moon having passed NASA’s strenuous testing to provide a workable tool rather than just a watch. The recent revival in mechanical watches has seen a greater spotlight put
on historic pieces and in turn, pre “Moonwatch” Speedmaster’s carry a small premium. However, the focus on their history can sometimes detract from just how much emphasis Omega put on creating their future but maybe more importantly, ensuring this innovation is also consumer friendly. As the largest brand within the Swatch Group, their formidable resources still focus on the same idea that the brand did close to a century ago, specifically making a robust timepiece whose parts are made in such a way that they will continue to be usable and servicable for years to come. During this time Omega have purchased the rights to the Co-Axial Calibre, which was created by legendary British watchmaker George Daniels and essentially revolutionised the basic elements of the modern mechanical wristwatch. The CoAxial escapement in its most simple explanation acts as two hearts for one body creating more efficiency and durability. Add a focus to moving vital components to a silicon base creates an even higher level of durability but also anti-magnetivity. In our modern world, we are surrounded by magnetic fields that can be found anywhere from mobile phones to computers and even Oyster card readers which can cause havoc to mechanical timepieces. Using the CoAxial Calibre as a base, then adding the improved silicon elements, an Aqua Terra “Gauss” model was created that now holds the world record for withstanding 15,000 Gauss of magnetism. This achievement is yet another that Omega have pioneered but in turn will benefit the entire watch making community. In 2015, Omega introduced another world first in a new type of Certification for mechanical watches; namely METAS (Swiss Federal Institute for Metrology). Moving on from the industry standard COSC certification, which certified the movement only, the METAS certificate takes the process a step further by affirming a quantitative measure against the entire timepiece. Though this certificate is by no means a new one, it is the first time it is being employed in this fashion. Initially unveiled specifically to showcase
New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF
COLUMN Omega’s new Globemaster collection, the aim was to introduce this concept into every mechanical model that they produce and thus sits under the umbrella of Master Chronometer. A nice modern touch is offered in that the user can visit a website via a link provided on the Master Chronometer Certification card where they can see the actual rate produced by their individual timepiece. A little bit geeky but definitely adding some welcome transparency. Working off this foundation, Omega have redesigned their fan favourite Planet Ocean family for 2016. Utilising the Master Chronometer movement across the collection, the updated designs are sure to capture a whole new generation of fans. Originally released in 2005, the Planet Ocean naturally falls under the Seamaster series but this time, elements of design from the Speedmaster case were used to create a more striking timepiece. Immediately gaining popularity, in recent years the collection has grown to becoming perhaps too big with too many options and sizes. 2016 sees the collection recreated in a more manageable array of models without taking away options or creating a watch that is not fit for purpose. The Seamaster series in general is not trying to be a Submariner or Fifty Fathoms but rather maybe a watch that offers a broader appeal. The historic Seamaster models were commissioned by the Royal Navy thus their credentials are intact but the Planet Ocean is a very modern sports watch; both mechanically sound but also very fun. The newly designed Planet Ocean models are not drastically different to their predecessors. A Chronograph model in 45.5mm case is offered in both Steel and Titanium while further case sizes of 43.5mm and 39.5mm, again in both Steel and Titanium (with mixtures of Omega’s patented Sedna Gold) create a good mix of sizes and complications. However, where the collection has been modernised is more than adding the aforementioned Master Chronometer movements. That alone is incredible but like Jaeger LeCoultre’s Geophysic True Second movement, Omega rarely stop there. Building on their Liquid Metal bezel that was first introduced in the Planet Ocean case, all the new steel models now enjoy this ceramic infused bezels while the dials are also ceramic creating a lovely colour and effect. Not to be outdone, the Titanium versions utilise a titanium dial and grey silicon nitride bezels for both durability and colour purposes. A little splash of orange adds not only some colour and fun to the bezels but Omega have managed to infuse rubber into this section creating a lovely texture on what is the most visible colour under water. Essentially, every possible material used in these watches from movements to cases is absolutely state of the art. Omega
could have priced these watches higher given these features but I believe this is what makes the brand very consumer friendly; you are undoubtedly wearing the future on your wrist at an very value based price point. As with most nautical models released in recent years, the new Planet Ocean family use rubber in the strap versions. The Titanium models enjoy a textile strap with rubber base whilst the steel models carry rubber straps with alligator stitched into the top so the watches look just as smart with a suit as they do in their natural habitat. Omega, as always, do not scrimp on security features either so all strap models are fulfilled with folding clasps ensuring no accidental drops. Furthermore, this is the first Planet Ocean series where the entire bracelet is brush finished so even with the roughest wear, there is a high chance they will look just as good in a few years. I personally am a fan of these little details as it suggests that the person designing the watches has actually worn them and also consulted the consumer to see where they can be improved from an ergonomic perspective, while the internal workings are splendidly displayed via exhibition case-backs. I genuinely believe Omega do not enjoy the credit they deserve for creating such outstanding watches! Over the last two years, two specific Speedmaster models, namely the “Snoopy” and CK2998 have gained attention because of their scarcity value and throwback appeal but this new Planet Ocean collection, in my opinion, will continue where the old series left off, a firm fan favourite and very much an easy go to option for us as retailers. We remain the only independent agent for Omega in Central London and we welcome you to discover this fantastic new collection in-store. Please feel free to contact us via phone or email for further details.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL LONDON
Discover the CineticTM Lift Expert from Carita at the Mandarin Oriental Spa Inspired by sisters, Rosie and Maria Carita, the brand began its adventure back in 1945 in the Maison de Beauté in Paris. Turning their attentions from hairdressing, these two sisters had one single desire and that was to reinvent women as a whole and reveal each individual’s beauty by providing tailor-made treatments and ultra-efficient cosmetic products. Today, the French based company, Carita, manufactures a full line of skin, hair and body products with a focus on treatments to turn back time. Carita operates in several Houses of Beauty both here and abroad offering tailor-made services and as of this September, they are now part of the luxury Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Spa. Enjoying a contemporary feel and with eight treatment rooms, each with private showers, spread over two floors away from the hustle and bustle of busy Knightsbridge, you can relax in the calm and nurturing atmosphere whilst you experience your treatment and enjoy this uniquely rejuvenating environment. Included in an exciting new range of powerfully effective facial treatments and luxurious products is the exclusive Carita Gold Facial which allows you to experience the iconic, high tech, Cinetic™ Lift Expert machine. An ultimate alternative to cosmetic surgery, this treatment delivers younger looking skin with a fresh sense of self confidence. Using an exclusive combination of micro currents, ultrasound and LED (Light Emitting Diodes) technologies, this bespoke anti-aging treatment creates dramatically visible results and leaves you with a more youthful and radiant complexion. Administered by an experienced therapist whose initial aim is to make you feel as comfortable as possible before starting, the skin is thoroughly cleaned before treatment begins. Combining ultra-sound waves which produces vibrating energy of twenty-eight thousand to thirty-two thousand vibrations per second, this non-invasive technique
starts with a hand-held device which has an ultra-thin metal attachment that rotates when applied and administers microcurrents which works on the facial muscles. This helps tighten pores and correct and stimulate the skin’s circulation thus increasing radiance and recharging the skin’s energy and vitality giving it a youthful glow. The massage is then continued by hand using metallic gloves which also transmits a mild current and allows the therapist to work closer to the facial contours for optimum precision. This preparation deep cleanses and purifies the skin, helping to re-oxygenate it by increasing tissue firmness and tone and enabling the ingredients to work at a deeper level. LED lights are also used to reactivate the youth process by stimulating dermal metabolism and micro-circulation and reducing pigmentation, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and increasing collagen production by regenerating and visibly firming the skin. This deeply relaxing and results driven treatment uses twenty-four carats mineral gold in the products used to recapture the vitality of the skin and leave it glowing. The treatment lasts for one hour fifty minutes and focuses on enhancing collagen and elastin and the finished result is quite remarkable. Skin looks much plumper. Fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away leaving the skin feeling much tighter and the facial contours are far more even-toned thanks to Carita’s bespoke anti-aging massage techniques. Although you will see immediate results from the first treatment, it is recommended that you have about five treatments in two weeks with top ups every three months after that. Carita’s products are designed to maintain beauty over time and correct imperfections through their products and treatments. Each one hour and fifty-minute treatment costs £290.00

FITNESS WITH ALEX CASTRO
Health
Why the mental is as important as the physical with Alex Castro
Alex Castro is one of London’s top personal trainers. With over ten years experience within the fitness industry, Alex trains his clients in the City alongside working at Barrys Bootcamp as an instructor at both their Euston and Moorgate branches.
I think its fair to say we are all very familiar with the positives that regular exercise can bring. There is overwhelming medical evidence that if exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs available. Not only is it proven to boost selfesteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, it also reduces risk of stress, depression, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and many others. So, yes, exercise and being healthy - isn’t it just fantastic!? Well absolutely, but it has become more and more apparent to me in the past few years, that our society can definitely have too much of a good thing where ‘being healthy’ is concerned. It was world mental health day on 10th October and whilst reflecting on this generally, I realised that I have witnessed an
increase in mental health anxieties amongst my peers who have become fixated on being healthy and fit. I am genuinely concerned that whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle (which I do as my job and which I firmly believe in!) we are in danger of creating a generation obsessed with this type of lifestyle and, who, consequently, have lost all ability to retain a sense of balance and moderation. We have seen orthorexia become a common diagnosis (in layman terms, an obsession with eating healthy foods). People simply cutting out whole food groups, juicing, cleansing, snorting chia, injecting coconut oil and trekking to Japan for some matcha tea. I joke, of course, but listening to it sounds scary - its not based on science, its time intensive and it must be all consuming figuring out what you can say yes or no to on a menu! Similarly, there’s a definite contingent of people over-training, insisting on exercising at least twice a day (changing and cancelling plans to ensure this happens) and clearly feeling insecure, lost and unfulfilled if they don’t manage this. I am, sadly, not surprised that mental problems appear to be affecting so many healthy and fit individuals. Social media, and our over-exposure to it, can be such a dark force. If only filters, staged photoshoots and our inane human desire to be liked didn’t exist, I’m sure at least some of these mental problems would be history! But what’s the answer? Well, its clearly not straightforward, but I’d recommend a reality check when scrolling your Instagram, a reminder that every single food group has something positive to offer your body and a serious bit of perspective that your life is likely to be longer and more fulfilled if your sole priority is not health and fitness!

THE ATHENAEUM
Making an Entrance As a five-star hotel, The Athenaeum has long been associated with the rich and famous. Boy band Take That announced their split from the penthouse of The Athenaeum, and legendary film director Steven Spielberg even installed an editing suite in one of the hotel’s residences when working on E.T., Close Encounters and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Once a Victorian Gentlemen’s club - Junior Athenaeum Club - favoured by gentlemen connected with literature, science and art, the word ‘Athenaeum’ loosely translates as ‘library’ and is derived from the Greek name Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The noble name stayed at 116 Piccadilly in the 1930s as the club disbanded and the building was transformed into a luxurious Art Deco apartment block. Four decades later, the Athenaeum and its neighbouring Victorian townhouses were bought by British entertainment group The Rank Organisation, who renovated the apartments into an iconic hotel to accommodate its movie stars whenever they were filming at London’s famous Pinewood and Ealing Studios. Today, the hotel has been family-run since the 1990s and has recently re-opened following a multi-million pound refurbishment and a ‘first of a kind’ partnership with The Galvin Brothers. The bold new look, has been created by leading British agency Kinnersley Kent Design and features a spectacular architectural double storey lobby and lounge with floor-to ceiling windows giving
the impression of being in, rather than opposite, leafy Green Park. Outside, the new terrace is one of the few outdoor dining areas on Piccadilly and provides a fantastic location to watch the world go by. Rather than a traditional reception desk, helpful concierge staff check in guests with iPad meet and greet. Allowing them to take a seat, and start relaxing as soon as they arrive. Upstairs, the 132 rooms, 12 suites, 18 residences and ‘The Penthouse Suite’ are all ready to welcome guests after the extensive work. Striking a fabulous balance between cool, modern contemporary décor with Art Deco twists and nods to the building’s heritage, the rooms provide luxury accommodation and relaxation in the heart of vibrant Mayfair with stunning views across Royal Green Park. For those looking for something even more special, most of the twelve spacious suites boast king-size four-poster beds with Hypnos mattresses and open plan or separate sitting rooms. The Penthouse Suite offers one of the best panoramic 180-degree skyline views in London from a large balcony and the 18 adjoining and connected Victorian Residences have their own private entrances and give guests independence while still enjoying the five-star hotel facilities. Along with the refurbishment, the hotel has seen the highly anticipated opening of the new Galvin at the Athenaeum restaurant and The Bar at the Athenaeum. In a first for the

hotel, the new partnership sees the Michelin-starred brothers, London chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin at the food and beverage helm throughout the hotel - from breakfast through to dinner, Afternoon Tea, Private Dining and 24/7 In Room Dining. Known for their seasonally driven cuisine and array of restaurants, Chris and Jeff Galvin have chosen their favourite dishes for the new restaurant, alongside new ones created especially for The Athenaeum, using British producers’ home grown produce. Before your meal, guests are invited to try a cocktail at ‘The Bar’. With its own private entrance on Down Street, The Bar is a destination in its own right and has been created in partnership with one of the world’s leading cocktail mixologists, Giancarlo Mancino and showcases a range of craft spirits and signature cocktails. Moving into the dining room, the room is beautifully lit with a variety of table, some tucked away perfect for a romantic dinner and others slightly larger that can host groups for celebrations or business meals. The food is exceptional, as you would expect from the Galvin Brothers. This is the first time the brothers have stepped away from their trademark French-inspired menus in favour of championing Britain’s delicious homegrown produce and supporting independent farmers across the UK. Menu highlights include Mediterranean fish soup, rouîlle, gruyère & croutons; Linguini, brown shrimps, chilli & coriander; Cassoulet of Gressingham duck & Gloucester Old Spot sausage; and Rose County beef rib eye, chips & green peppercorn butter. Sweet fans will rejoice at the dessert menu which features, Sticky toffee pudding, Cornish clotted cream; and Milk chocolate Jivara baba with dark chocolate
Guanaja & Rum. Alongside the Lunch and Dinner menus, there is also a Set Menu which is great for theatre goers, and an All Day Dining menu. For breakfast, enjoy the large continental buffet selection of pastries, mueslis, yogurt and fruit before indulging in a hearty full English Breakfast with a choice of free range eggs, Dingley Dell bacon, Huntsham Farm sausage, and Mr Brown’s black pudding. From beginning to end, your stay will be spent in relaxed luxury and you will leave wanting nothing but a quick return to stay again. The new check-in and out system ensures that at no point you are left standing and waiting to maximise you experience - and you don’t want to be standing too long once you have enjoyed breakfast. Rooms start from £280.

Champagne Slipper at 34 Mayfair 34 Mayfair has partnered with iconic shoe designer Rupert Sanderson to create The Rupert Sanderson Champagne Slipper for 34 Mayfair. Continuing the legacy started by Kate Moss’s iconic 34 Mayfair Coupe, which was modelled on her breast, Rupert has created the glass and has crafted the actual Champagne flute into the heel of an intricately detailed, silver-plated brass and crystal glass shoe stand. Drawing on the Art Deco contours of the restaurant and inspired by the terraced crown of Van Alen’s Art Deco Chrysler Building in Midtown Manhattan, Rupert has crafted the ultimate in Champagne glassware design. To coincide with the launch Rupert has also commissioned a Ready to Wear Rupert Sanderson Champagne Pump for 34 Mayfair for customers to buy in store, which will be available from Wednesday, 9 November. Each one will come complete with 6 Champagne flutes and a bottle Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé and will cost £5,000.

Offering a fantastic way into the cuisine, any Thai novice should venture here to experience a taster of what the colourful country has to offer. What better way to start than to try one of the all-encompassing Banquet menus. While it can be hard to know where to start with the long list of dishes from the al a carte menu, the Patara Banquet menu is for a minimum of two people and offer six shared starters, four mains served with rice and vegetable accompaniments and an individual portion of dessert. Menu highlights include, Spiced Fish Cakes with Cucumber Salsa; Duck confit spring rolls with herbed prune sauce; Char Grilled Chicken Satay with peanut Sauce; Prawn & Crisp Vegetable Rice Rolls with Lime & Chilli Sauce; Crisp Sea Bass and Seared Pineapple with Piquant Tamarind Sauce; Free Range Chicken Tenderloin in Sweet Basil Green Curry; and Coconut Braised Beef with Lime, Mint, & Lemongrass. Costing £38.00 per person without soup and £43.00 per person with soup, you can add Lobster Pad Thai for an additional £20.00 per portion and enjoy a signature Pataralini cocktail with your meal for £7.00 per glass.
For seafood lovers, the Ocean Set menu includes an individual portion of soup, four starters to share and four main courses with rice, as well as a dessert. REVIEW
CAU in the Dock More for your money and with more variety than its sister restaurant Gaucho, Argentine steakhouse CAU is a great place to feast and catch up with friends or colleagues. With three restaurants across town, the St Katherine Dock location is perfect for entertaining or a romantic dinner. Bursting with South America flavours, yet keeping things sleek and fabulously stylish in the décor, the popular restaurant with a view serves up a whole heap of dishes that will have your taste buds watering in no time. Start off with some of the small plates, the jamon and manchego croquettes are not to be missed, nor can the classic Argentinian filled mini empanadas. We highly recommend the classic spicy ground beef and onion. After that, and moving on to the mains, steak lovers must try the Lomito from the speciality cuts menu chosen by the head griller. The fillet of rump is considered the finest cut in Argentina, combining the flavour of rump and the tenderness of fillet. Served with a blue cheese sauce, 400g costs just £28.95. Add a couple of sides such as the triple cooked chunky chips, Causlaw, or crispy onion rings and you’re good to go. Those after something a little different can opt for one of the many burgers and sandwiches, from the ‘Cheese and Bacon’ to the ‘Latin’, or a lighter salad. For dessert, the famous Churro Argentinian doughnuts are a must have. Lightly dusted with
cinnamon sugar and served traditionally with dulce de leche, you’ll be surprised how many you can eat after all that food. Wash it down with an innovative cocktail from the bar or one of the many wines from the extensive list. The restaurant has also recently launched an exciting new set menu. Available Monday to Friday, 12pm to 6:30pm, diners will be able to feast for incredible value: two courses for only £12.95 and three courses at £14.95. Start as you mean to go on by indulging on the incredibly moreish fish tacos: crispy battered pollock served on blue tortillas with a smoky chipotle mayo, or the crispy salt and pepper squid. For the main course, and making a return after popular demand, is the aubergine lasagne; replacing pasta with layers of aubergine, this healthier option does not compromise on flavour, piled high with aubergine, tomato, melted cheese and fresh basil. If meat is on your mind, feast on 220g of tender Tapa De Cuadril; cut from the top of the rump, this signature dish is served the Brazilian way - thinly sliced and flash grilled so it melts in your mouth. As well as a peppery rocket salad, choose a side to accompany your steak, and any of the mains, including thin or chunky chips, truffle mac ‘n’ cheese, or polenta. For dessert, if you can manage, the famous Pina-CAU-lada or dulce de leche pancakes with vanilla ice cream and caramel are the perfect way to finish the meal.

RECIPE
Hearty yet Healthy Nicola Millbank is set to launch her debut book next year, but here is a sneak peak at what you can expect just in time for those colder evenings. Her creamy leek and Gorgonzola risotto with prosciutto pangratatto should bring some Italian warmth to your kitchen and body!
Creamy leek and Gorgonzola risotto with prosciutto pangratatto Ingredients 1 tbsp. of olive oil 1 large leek, finely sliced into half moons 1 garlic glove, minced 300g of pearl barley 200ml of white wine 1 litre of chicken stock A large handful of freshly grated parmesan 1 tbsp. of butter 3 rashers of prosciutto 2 pieces of stale bread 2 sprigs of fresh thyme Olive oil
Method Pop a heavy based pan onto a medium heat. Fry the leek and garlic in the olive oil for a few minutes until softened. Add the pearl barley and stir for a couple of minutes until fully coated in the oil. Pour in the wine and allow it to bubble away, then add all of the stock. Cover the pan and cook for 20 minutes. To make the pangratatto, in a mini blender blend the bread, prosciutto and olive oil until it forms chunky breadcrumbs. Remove from the blender and add to a frying pan with the thyme. Fry until golden and remove from the pan to cool and crisp up. After 20 minutes remove the lid from the pearl barley and turn the heat up, stirring until all of the stock has evaporated but it’s still loose in consistency. Add the parmesan and knob of butter and stir, remove from the heat pop the lid back on and allow to sit for 2 minutes before serving. To serve sprinkle the pangratatto over the risotto, scatter with fresh thyme and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Recipe by Nicola Millbank AKA Milly Cookbook. Milly’s debut book; Milly’s Real Food will be published by Harper Collins in hardback, priced at £20.00 and released on 4th May 2017. COCKTAIL COLUMN
Zoran’s Mixology Masterclass
with Zoran Peric
Zoran Peric is a cocktails and spirits expert with a background in launching and managing some of London’s top bars such as the Soho Hotel. He has also worked with some of the country’s leading drinks brands, working with them to develop their brand and drinks concepts.
In November, as autumn fades into winter, we begin to value the things that bring us comfort. Enjoying a rich and warming drink, perhaps? A lot is being said at the moment about the Danish notion of Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) - a term intended to capture the feeling of cosiness without actually directly translating. Sitting by the fire on a cold night, spending an afternoon in with friends and family, enjoying a good book on the sofa, the art of hygge is about finding delight in the things that soothe us. When it comes to winter drinking, we can enjoy a plethora of tipples aside from the traditional mulled wine to bring us comfort this month, and my personal recommendation would be to explore the world of whisky. Often a category considered to be limited to the connoisseur, whisky is becoming much more popular with the everyday drinker. White spirits no longer dominate the cocktail menu and we now see bars getting creative with their whisky serves. In particular,
Japanese whisky, with its delicate characteristics and smooth yet complex taste, lends itself well to blending into cocktails. One of my favourite whisky bars is East London hangout, Bull in a China Shop, as it boasts a delicious selection of Japanese whisky cocktails and a back bar of over 30 rare whiskies. Those looking for an introduction to whisky cocktails beyond the typical Old Fashioned or Manhattan should try the Shinto Sour created with Hibiki Japanese Harmony, plum sake, lemon juice and syrup. On November 5th we celebrate Bonfire Night, a great occasion to enjoy a smokier whisky or whisky cocktail. The smoky character of a whisky is created when peat is used in the drying process. When we talk of peated whiskies we think of Islay whiskies such as Laphroaig. Whilst cherished worldwide for their fantastic, full-bodied and powerful flavour, there are peated whiskies to be enjoyed by those with more delicate pallets. Suntory’s Hakushu is a fine example of a lightly peated whisky that is surprisingly fresh. Bartender, Jean-Vital Castellani created The Smoking Geisha cocktail with Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve for its uniquely subtle and smoky flavour. Inspired by the traditional Japanese Whisky Highball, the Smoking Geisha is built over ice cubes with soda water, with the additional hints of Lillet Rose, mint leaves and Kumquat. The perfect smoky cocktail to delight in this Bonfire Night. Recipe: 40ml Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve; 15ml Lillet Rose (or Cocchi Americano rose); 80ml soda water; Build the cocktail over ice cubes and present in a smoky bell jar.

HARRODS WINE
The Oenophilist
with Edward Gerard, Wine Buyer for Harrods
Edward Gerard started his career cycling cases of fine wine round the SW1 and SW3 postcodes. Some 13 years later after a stint in the USA, and having extensively traveled and tasted his way around the wine world he finds himself with the enviable job of selecting the vast range available in the Wine Rooms at Harrods.
Being the Wine Buyer for Harrods we have to think way in advance as to the products that will be the big gifting hits for Christmas this year, so I thought this month I would outline the top Christmas gifts from Harrods for a wine lover. For the gadget savvy friend or family member there really is only one gift that stands out and that is the Coravin Model 2 Elite, which this Christmas comes in the exclusive Harrods Green for £249 (also available in Gold, Silver and Red). This revolutionary wine accessory allows the user to pour wines from the bottle without pulling the cork thus stopping any oxygen getting into the bottle and keeping it fresh for days, months or even years! For the fashion lover we have two very special wines that have been created by Francois Louis Vuitton, who this year launched the wine range Collection Personelle. I tasted through the whole range and have selected the best. The delightful 2010 Francois-L Vuitton Chateau Malartic Lagraviere for £89.95 and the wonderfully complex 2010 Francois-L Vuitton Chateau Giscours £99.95, both wines are eminently drinkable now but I would advise decanting for an hour to provide the best result. For the person who has everything, we can help out here too because this year in honour of our history with the estate, which goes back over 100 years, we will be launching what I believe to be the most exquisite release from Chateau La Mission Haut Brion to date. ‘A Cut Above’ is a collection never seen before and limited to just six
pieces; it embodies the finest provenance and a story that is utterly unique. Within the case, connoisseurs will receive four of the greatest wines from the estate in the 1982, 1989 and 2000 Grand Vin Reds, as well as the 2009 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc. Beyond the truly remarkable wines, what makes this collection unique is the 12 piece knife set that will lie above the wines in the beautiful bespoke case commissioned and designed by HRH Prince Robert of Luxemburg, the owner of Chateau La Mission Haut Brion. These knives have been lovingly created by a true French artisan knifemaker who has used the Red and White barrels from the Chateau to produce the handles, and thus in my opinion, has created a work of art that is both visually beautiful and authentic but also brings the warmth and tactile elements of the wood to life. We will be launching ‘A Cut Above’ in the wine shop and Harrods.com at the end of November.

London Steakhouse Co. Just a stone’s throw away from bustling Liverpool Street Station in the heart of the City, the London Steakhouse Company has recently undergone a huge refurbishment. With 85 covers and another restaurant in Chelsea, the inviting space is open plan with a long marble-top bar and high ceilings. At the back of the room, lies a raised mezzanine seating area with its own bar. For private events, heavy velvet curtains can be drawn across this space, seating 20, to create an exclusive party area. Reflecting co-owner Marco Pierre White’s culinary style, London Steakhouse Company’s carefully curated menus feature a host of seasonally changing classic British dishes. Each dish is made from scratch in the kitchen every day, all apart from the ice cream which comes from renowned supplier Ice Cream Union. The restaurant boasts a long-standing partnership with esteemed butcher Aubrey Allen and all steak cuts are dry-aged for 28 days and come served with a choice of Café de Paris butter, peppercorn or béarnaise sauce. As well as an extensive meat and fish offering, the restaurant also serves a range of vegetarian dishes. Menu highlights include beef short ribs with house bbq glaze & coleslaw; grilled Scottish langoustines with garlic butter & fresh lemon; and the 24oz sharing Boston Chop. An impressive piece of meat that simply falls off the bone. Guests can also choose to top their steaks with the likes of maple
cured bacon, two fried eggs and langoustine tails. Sides include house fries, creamed spinach and crispy onion rings. The dessert menu features British classics such as sticky toffee pudding; and traditional British cheeses served with almond fig cake and quince curd. To wash it all down, the restaurant offers an impressive wine list, and a knowledgeable sommelier is on hand to help with any decisions. Otherwise the new installed whisky bar features an impressive list of cocktails and wines from both the New and Old World should you fancy something a little different or post meal. Speciality cocktails include the best-selling Passion Jazz and classic Whisky Mac. In addition to the à la carte menu, the restaurant offers a Prix Fixe lunch and pre/post theatre menu priced at £27.50 for three courses. With the festive season fast approaching the restaurant will also be offering two 3-course menus available from 28 November until 24 December 2016 for only £35 and £55. These are complemented by two drinks packages for £15 and £25 to ensure guests stay within budget. Both menus offer a wide selection of starters, mains and desserts including meat, fish and vegetarian options. The Christmas produce has been sourced from prestigious suppliers with steaks from Aubrey Allen, turkey from Holly Farm, and venison from Balmoral & Highland Estates.

JAGUAR F-PACE
The Big Cat Joins the Rest of the Pack All-wheel-drive hasn’t been reserved for the Land Rover arm of the Jaguar-Land Rover group, however the production of SUV’s has been and, until now, was the distinguishing feature between the two. Jaguar have set their sights on the ever expanding SUV market with the first step on the ladder and they’ve got plenty behind them to help. The technology and know-how that this company possesses is arguably the best in the world when it comes to off-road capability, so how does it transfer to their historically sporty counterparts in the Jaguar garage...

YOUR DRIVE Utilising their impressive ‘Lightweight Aluminium Architecture’, Jaguar have managed to produce an incredibly agile crossover. Aided by the sleek F-Type-inspired profile, the F-Pace is instantly recognisable as a Jaguar and possesses the same engineered design as its smaller sister to produce the most efficient, responsive and comfortable car possible. Despite being an ‘all-new’ vehicle for the marque, the introduction of their LAA has meant that they can develop almost any class of car without issues of weight and stability - two major factors when you start increasing the cars capacity. Consequently they have been able to focus more on the F-Pace’s styling; which is imposing, sporty and functional all in one, and the rest of the car’s technology which is equally as impressive. The F-Pace comes packed with numerous integrated technologies as standard including lane departure warning systems, all surface progress control - making the most of the available grip, ASPC automatically controls the throttle and the brakes, enabling the vehicle to pull away smoothly; the driver simply has to steer and autonomous emergency braking to name a few. This cars all-wheel drive system is the company’s most sophisticated yet. With access to both the Jaguar and Land Rover technologies, they have managed to take the best parts from each and pack it all into this car. It not only features the advanced, in-house control system first developed for the F-Type AWD: Intelligent Driveline Dynamics which preserves rear-wheel drive agility and handling character but can seamlessly transfer up to 50 per cent torque to the front wheels to exploit the performance benefits of extra traction, on all surfaces and in all weathers, but also Adaptive Surface Response (ASR) which has been developed from Land Rover’s patented, award-winning Terrain Response technology, making the AWD system even more effective in challenging conditions. Integrated into Jaguar Drive Control, ASR identifies the type of surface and optimises the mapping of the powertrain and dynamic stability control system. They have further enhanced the system for deep snow and gravel, just to be safe. It is not surprising then that the ride and composure of the F-Pace is as consistent as the rest of the model line despite the increased centre of gravity. As with the vast majority of crossovers and even SUV’s sold in the UK, the F-Pace is likely to be utilised on a daily basis on nothing but tarmacked surfaces. Fortunately,
Jaguar possess more than enough knowledge in the road-going industry to be able to produce a vehicle that is as competent on the road as any of its other cars - maybe with the exception of the F-Type and their other top-end mad machines. Thanks to the sleek, low profile of the body, the centre of gravity hasn’t been pushed too high in comparison to other models, so the issue of body roll through cornering is minimised. This is of course aided by the body’s high torsional stiffness which enables the F-Type-derived double wishbone front suspension and sophisticated integral link rear suspension to perform even better. Monotube dampers come as standard on entry level models, but for even better ride and handling, the electronically-controlled Adaptive Dynamics system measures body and wheel movement 100 and 500 times a second respectively, ensuring optimum damping forces in all conditions. It is easy to overlook the ride and handling of cars when you begin to move up in the size order, but with today’s technology, these vehicles are now able to do things manufacturers themselves could only dream of a few decades ago. With this level of technology constantly working for you behind the scenes, you are able to enjoy the ride at your desired speed on your desired surface with little worry of any issue, besides any unforeseen external factors. And even then they have made sure that there’s enough to keep you safe in the event of anything happening. Not only has the aluminium construction provided Jaguar with the perfect base on which to build an agile crossover, but it also helps to improve the performance elsewhere too. Even the entry level 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel will reach 62mph from standing in under 9 seconds with the top-end 3.0-litre supercharged engine producing 380PS and achieving the same in just over 5 seconds. Of course the main benefits can be seen on the efficiency scale. Boasting a whopping 53.3mpg on a combined run with a CO2 emissions figure of just 139g/km, this is not only reliable when it comes to the road surface, but you’re not likely to get stuck without any fuel either. The numbers speak for themselves with this car, starting at just over £35,000 for a 2.0-litre turbocharged, RWD manual with all of the aforementioned features - with the exception of AWD related technologies of course - and no real necessity to add any extras. If you would rather a few added extras, then you can look at the R-Sport trim which comes with a host of features already included such as 8-way adjustable sports seats,
71
YOUR DRIVE xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and 19” alloys wheels. It is certainly worth considering the AWD versions over the RWD regardless of whether you plan on any cross country driving, simply because the ride and composure on the road is vastly improved by the impressive technology that the system brings with it, and who doesn’t want a little more safety for its passengers and performance on and off-road for the driver. Inside, Jaguar have continued their recent design success with integrated lighting and an updated infotainment system as optional extras. With the upgraded InControl Touch Pro system, you not only get the impressive new 10.2-inch touchscreen with quad-core processor and solid-state drive, but you also have the added benefit of a full digital display behind the wheel which means you can view a full screen 3D navigation system on the 12.3-inch digital dashboard. With the intuitive navigation system you will be able to maximise your day to day efficiency. It can ‘learn’ your commute to ensure you are given the most accurate and efficient route guidance depending on traffic situations etc. and can even inform other people of your arrival time if necessary. With the cost of certain technologies already beginning to become more accessible, cars like this will begin to be on every corner, but for now, it is still reserved for the few savvy enough to realise what they could have. From the fundamental engineering technology to the driving and user technologies, this car has every base covered and the remarkable thing is that it is all included in the standard package. RWD versions aside, this is a lot of car for the money and despite only being a crossover, it shows encouraging signs for the Jaguar brand and some enormous potential for taking on the full-blown SUV market. But we will have to wait and see.

Classic American Muscle 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback 302
OUT OF THIS WORLD
There are few machines that truly embody ‘the American muscle car’, but the original Ford Mustang is certainly one of them. With the Mustang only recently making its UK debut (with a 5.0-litre option), all predecessors to the current model are imported monsters. And this is by no means an exception. Fully restored to the highest standard, this 1968 Fastback 302 packs a 4.9-litre V8 and is one of the finest examples you will find on the road. Such is the quality that the team at Chelsea Cars hasn’t seen better in 35 years. Cars like this do not come along very often, especially in the UK with the very limited supply of American muscle, so this is a genuine opportunity to get your hands on something quite special. Regardless of your preference, whether it be Dodge, Chevvy or any other, you can do nothing but appreciate this spectacular car If you are a car enthusiast, American muscle car nut or simply enjoy the iconic appeal of the original Ford Mustang, this is a must see. Equally, if you are in the market for a new ride, then this original Highland Green Fastback should definitely be on the list. 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback 302. POA

PROPERTY
The State of the City with William Delaney, Managing Director at Lawrence Ward & Co. City of London residential property has always occupied unique, niche corner of the Central London market. The perception of the Square Mile was at one time that of a predominantly commercial area which was “deserted at night and weekends”. This somewhat unfair reputation has faded as the area has changed beyond all recognition. It is now vibrant and busy with class leading restaurants and bars alongside fantastic shopping. Purchasers in the City are motivated by confidence, convenience and quality with many of the more common motivating factors for purchasing a property that apply in most other regions, absent from the decision process. Whilst average apartment prices in the City & City Fringe are now 41% higher than they were 5 years ago (source Lonres) some buyers are understandably cautious. At present, there is uncertainty over the UK’s position in terms of trade and access to markets upon departing the European Union together with the increases in stamp duty, changes to capital gains tax, etc. However, the current weakness of Sterling now presents an opportunity for those buyers who are in a position to take advantage of currency fluctuation. It is at economic times such as this that truly unique properties
“stand out from the crowd” and buyers recognise the chance to acquire this type of property is scarce; hence they are tempted to seize the opportunity. Therefore, we were delighted to be appointed to market for sale a fantastic apartment in “Globe View”, directly overlooking the River Thames and with spectacular views including The Shard, Tower Bridge, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, Tate Modern Museum and the Millennium Bridge. Apartments directly overlooking the river always command a substantial premium over other apartments in the City and especially so, when situated in what was originally, a 19th Century warehouse. We have been providing estate agency and property management services in the City of London and surrounding areas for nearly 20 years, offering sound and straightforward advice to our clients combined with client care and ethical principles that ensure that anyone who does business with us, can be confident that all transactions are transparent and that the highest standards are applied to the delivery of the service. As a way of doing business, this reflects the whole ethos of the company and sets us apart. If you would like more information about the apartment mentioned in this article or to discuss your property requirements, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

New Build Garden Design with Kate Gould
Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer with more than a decade’s hands-on experience transforming gardens of all sizes and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where she has been awarded three Gold medals. If you would like to know more about our services please contact Kate at kategouldgardens.com
As Britain’s we are nation of gardeners so it is therefore strange that our birds and bees are in decline considering how much we spend on our outdoor spaces. If there was no birdsong in the garden the world would be a very strange place and if there were no bees then our entire food chain would be scuppered. Encouraging wildlife into your garden has therefore never been so important. There are many practical ways to bring wildlife into the garden: • Leave a pile of logs to rot down to create habitats for invertebrates. This ‘from the soil up’ approach is by far the most holistic. Tiny invertebrates are food for all sorts of small creatures like frogs, toads and hedgehogs and healthy life at the bottom of the food chain makes for healthy birds and mammals further up the pecking order.
• Plant a native hedge if you have the space. Hornbeam, Elder, field Maple, Blackthorn, Guelder rose, Hawthorn as well as evergreens like Holly and Yew make not only for a diverse habitat but also a long lasting food source [for multiple bird types] with nectar from flowers followed by fruits and berries. • Plant native trees to encourage birds to nest. Birch, Hornbeam, Oak would all make wonderful specimens in larger gardens for native birds and the Rowan family work well in smaller gardens where their long lasting berries are much sought after by blackbirds and song thrushes in the winter. • Leave a patch of land to run to wild and let nature take over. Long grass is essential for creating habitats for invertebrates, which form the basis of any healthy food chain. • A natural pond if you have space and the right location is perfect for attracting wildlife frogs, newts, birds and insects to the
90
garden. Ensure you have gentle shelves to the sides to enable amphibians and small mammals to escape out of the water when they need to. Oxygenating plants help to keep the water sweet and frogs and toads will breed, little tadpoles turning into the best pest control as they mature into their adult form and decimate the slug population. If all of these sound a little too ‘messy’ for you then there are lots of plants that you can add to your existing scheme that will benefit wildlife but are much more conventionally ‘gardeny’ in feel. These are a few easy to grow favourites: • Buddleja is top of the list. The butterfly bush is scented and a brilliant nectar stop for butterflies. Buddleja are large plants but can be kept in check by spring pruning. There are many to choose from in colours from the darkest purple right through to white with golds, mauves and reds in between. • Helianthus, more commonly known as sunflowers; opt for single bloomed species (and this is a general rule of thumb for most plants - the simpler the flower form the easier wildlife finds it to locate the nectar). Sunflowers are great for children to start gardening with as their rapid growth means that there isn’t a long wait for gratification which comes in a plant 8-10’ high if you’re lucky with wonderful huge summery yellow discs. Leave these flowers to turn to seed and all manner of finches (depends where you live so difficult to specify but can include goldfinch, chaffinch, green finch etc.) will come flocking.
• Herbs; there are so many to choose from but all do best in full sun where the soil can bake. A poorer soil is preferred so no need to dig in organic matter. Herbs like a little neglect to thrive. Lavender, Thyme, Oregano, Borage, Angelica and Fennel all attract bees as well as pollinating insects. Grow these organically and you will not only be benefitting the wildlife but also have the freshest and fullest flavour herbs at your fingertips. • Sedum is known also by its common name of Ice plant and it comes to bloom on flat heads in late summer when the garden begins to slow down. These tiny star shaped flowers held together in their hundreds are adored by bees and are so easy to grow that every garden should have space for some. Sedums are rather fleshy and the leaves tend to be a blue / grey or dusky purple with flowers in shades of hot pink and magenta. Easy to grow, easy to propagate and even more of a bonus the flowers stand well through the winter and look beautiful when frosted. • Shrubs can be overlooked as habitat and food stores for wildlife. Plants with berries are really important winter larders. Choose your plants carefully though as some plants just aren’t palatable and a metallic purple Callicarpa will hold its berries all winter whilst a Pyracantha will be much more appreciated. Sambucus or Elder are also good and their fleshy black berries are also worth growing the plant for although the cultivated forms are as lovely in their own right and their wildlife attracting appeal is a bonus.
There are lots of plants to try and these websites have much more extensive lists. So if you are thinking of sharing your garden with wildlife then you will find plenty of inspiration. rhs.org.uk | rspb.org.uk | bbka.org.uk | johncullengardens.com | kategouldgardens.com
SAVILLS
Which features add the most value to a home? with Jasper Colliver, Head of Savills Wandsworth When valuing a home, it’s not simply a case of checking your total square footage and multiplying it by average values. Instead, there are numerous factors in play, including the condition, layout and specification of the property. It also depends on the individuals involved and their motivations; if a speedy sale is preferred, for example, a lower guide price can attract buyers more quickly. What makes a property incredibly valuable to some people, and not to others? At Savills we recently carried out a survey about which features do add value, and which don’t, looking at an average four bed house in London worth around £1.25m and a regional four bed village house worth in the region of £750,000. With space often tight in London, the opportunity to save or make money is very attractive. A good EPC and eco credentials are helpful, but more than that you’d certainly pay a premium for a garden room or annexe, even adding around 5-10% onto the value of a London home. Buyers are increasingly requesting one as they are great for working from home or as secondary accommodation,

COLUMN and are always factored in to the total square footage of the property. They’re a very profitable way of adding value; you get money back without spending a fortune. The opportunity to extend is also high on the list and we are increasingly seeing owners sell their properties with planning in place. Often they will submit a planning application, which doesn’t cost a lot, and look to sell for an added premium, especially popular with buyers who are looking for properties where they can ‘add value’. It’s worth not sacrificing too much garden though. A good garden is definitely attractive to buyers and large gardens often command a premium. Many other factors may not add value, but make a property stand out from the crowd. Period features increase the chances of a sale, and rarely put a buyer off. A few years ago original features were at the top of buyers’ wish lists but many now appreciate these touches can be easily restored at a small cost and so won’t pay the same premiums for them. A property of architectural or historical importance can be a different matter, however; some enjoy the gravitas of historical significance and would pay up to a 5% premium, especially if they really fall for the property and what it stands for. Savills Wandsworth | 020 8877 4811 | savills.co.uk
Installing the latest technology can also enhance value, suggesting to the buyer that the property has been invested in, though too much can of course intimidate a technophobe. Always take care when adding in features such as these and, if in doubt, it’s always worth asking your agent to ensure you invest wisely in a way that will see strong returns. FINANCE WITH MATT GOLD
Full blown constitutional crisis could hit GBP Our financial insider reviews the global markets When was the last time the English, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish (Northern) agreed on the same thing? Teresa May has quite a big task to make sure the four legs of the table are standing before Britain bargains the Brexit terms with the Eurozone. Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is making Brexit more interesting by mentioning the possibility of the second vote for Scottish independence on the table. One tangible impact is the weakness of the British Pound, it touched 1.106 against the EUR on 14 October, on 14 June it was EUR 1.258. Against the US Dollar, GBP hit 1.218 on 17 October, previously at 1.430 on 17 June. Great for tourism, education and perhaps investment. FTSE100 has been strong since the bungee jump from Brexit, it was as low as 5982.2 on 27 June and it is at 7020.47 as of 21 October. FTSE100 was also above 7000 level in April 2015 and at that time, GBP was around 1.36-1.4 to EUR. Let’s look at a scenario: If GBP and EUR becomes parity, so GBP weakens another 10% against the Euro and GBP 1 is EUR 1 (never say never, analysts at HSBC and UBS are making such forecast). The UK has been running deficit in both fiscal and current account balances since the financial crisis in 2008. The country has been swiping credit cards and spending more than it makes for 7 years. You can afford that if you happen to have the money printing machine as well however, one of the potential outcomes is that people stop believing in the money coming out from the printing machine, the British Pound. Companies and countries that sell goods and services to the UK may prefer to have the sale in EUR or USD prices. Even if they receive GBP from UK clients, they would convert GBP to EUR or USD. This would in turn make the GBP move lower against the EUR or USD. The Bank of England might need to increase interest rates to encourage people to hold on to the GBP in their bank account. This sounds extreme but it is textbook logic. If Britain becomes four individual nations all wanting their own deal with Eurozone it could trigger the market to panic. The Eurozone definitely does not like Brexit but they do not want to see a broken Britain either. The headline news of “GBP 18 billion divorce bill for Brexit” scared many British tax payers and probably
gives Nicola Sturgeon a stronger voice when she meets Teresa May. Meanwhile, foreigners are enjoying the cheap Sterling and shopping luxury items in London. For investors with GBP income, the key words for investment are diversification and protection. While the GBP move could trigger market panic, another black swan is swimming away. Hillary is increasing her lead against Donald Trump in the US presidential race. On the surface, Donald Trump would be less predictable than Hillary in terms of impact to the global political scene and economy. Hillary has been a full time politician for decades. Back in 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed Hillary to the board of directors of the Legal Services Corporation and she was the first woman to be chairman of the board of directors of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978. President Obama appointed her as Secretary of State in 2008. In short, she has been in the circle for 40 years and politicians are familiar with her style and approach. She is also very aware of the do’s and do not’s in the White House. While, she may not be a technical person when it comes to emails, Hillary winning the race against Donald could be a voter choice for stability. It makes the market easier to read and also means the FED in US could continue its path to increase interest rate without listening to Donald. Investors are already getting used to no Quantitative Easing in US and preparing for a rate hike. A higher US interest rate could contribute to a stronger USD against GBP. This is another straw on the camel back for GBP. So far, the weakness in GBP is one reason of FTSE100 rally. Glancing over some UK stocks, one may have a rosy picture over the UK economy. Tesco closed 214.85 GBp on 19 October, a new high in 2016. London Stock Exchange printed a 2016 high at 2922 GBp on 4 October. BHP Billiton had a peak at 1267 GBp on 10 October. Of course, there are lesser performers to balance things out. The banking sector is definitely not winning from Brexit. Take Barclays as an example, it closed 183.2 GBp on 21 October, a fair amount below 214 GBp level at the beginning of 2016 but already a lot better than the 127.2 GBp low of 27 June. Either way you look at it, the effects of Brexit are far from over and there isn’t likely to be a smooth journey ahead.
