175 Y E A R S O F G L AS H Ü T T E Nomos Glashütte celebrates 175 years of watchmaking history with haute horlogerie in stainless steel. Lambda enamel white, black, and blue are limited editions and works of watchmaking art. A new stainless steel case, a new size, new dials in enamel white, black, and blue, and regulated according to chronometer standards. In short, that’s what makes these three new timepieces celebrating 175 years of Glashütte watchmaking special. Each colorway is limited to 175 pieces, and each individual watch is crafted using the traditional techniques of this historic town. The enamel gloss of the dials offers an unusual optical depth - an effect enhanced by the curve of the dial and sapphire crystal glass. The highly-polished steel, rarely found in fine watchmaking, makes these watches suitable for everyday wear. The name Lambda stands for “intrinsic values” in mathematics, in other words, for a value that remains constant. Lambda features a power reserve indicator complication, sweeping in an arc across the dial and tracking 84 hours, or three-and-a-half days, accurate to the hour. The four needle-thin hands give this watch model a graceful elegance with fine features reminiscent of a kinetic sculpture. The polished case of the watch frames the dial with a slender bezel, while the transition from the side to the back of the case is a radiodrome - a curve with a shrinking radius. The lugs reflect the curved form of the case as well. The mechanical movement is also something special. Lambda is

powered by DUW 1001, and is the first caliber to bear the title “Deutsche Uhrenwerke NOMOS Glashütte.” A large, slender caliber with twin mainspring barrels, 29 jewels within ensure flawless functioning with six of them in hand-polished screwed chatons, reflecting traditional watchmaking. All edges are also polished by hand, with black polishing on individual steel parts. The fine sunburst polishing on the three-quarter plate is eyecatchingly beautiful and is a polish that is only found in Nomos timepieces, and has become a part of traditional Glashütte watchmaking since Lambda. By contrast, the regulatory system of screw balance and swan neck fine adjustment in this model has its roots in history. The spring of the swan neck fine adjustment is positioned on top of the balance cock. This reads “Lovingly produced in Glashütte” in German, a message handengraved by a highly skilled watchmaker. A. Lange & Söhne In 2020, A. Lange & Söhne has two reasons to celebrate - the 175th anniversary of Saxony’s precision watchmaking industry and the 30th anniversary of a courageous new beginning.

With the introduction of a pocket watch production on 7 December 1845, Ferdinand Adolph Lange laid the cornerstone for Glashütte to rise to prominence as a watchmaking hub. From the humble beginnings as a teaching workshop with 15 apprentices, he not only developed a watch manufactory which was successful far beyond the borders of Germany - he also initiated watch production based on the division of labour which was modern for its day by encouraging his employees to establish their own companies. Inspired by long-standing tradition, the watchmakers of A. Lange & Söhne today strive to advance precision watchmaking with innovative ideas and excellent craftsmanship. Their driving motivation of never standing still is exemplified by the new

slightly cambered moons are framed by hand-engraved stars. The dial and the lunar discs are crafted in-house to assure the perfect implementation of the innovative design idea. Tourbograph Perpetual Honeygold “Homage to F. A. Lange” features a quintet of complications and could legitimately be called a grand complication - if it weren’t for the Grand Complication piece that already exists in the A. Lange & Söhne catalogue. Immensely difficult to design and create, the connection between the perpetual calendar and the rattrapante chronograph posed a special challenge for the engineers. This is because when both the chronograph function is used and the calendar displays switch, mechanical conflicts must be avoided alongside amplitude fluctuations that could have a negative impact on rate stability.

The three limited models with cases made of exclusive honey gold, special movement decorations and special dials are dedicated to watchmaking pioneer Ferdinand Adolph Lange. They represent a unique connection between traditional watchmaking elements and innovative craftsmanship in processing techniques, thus building a bridge from the origins of Lange watchmaking to the present. The unifying element of the three new limited editions is the innovative case material, honey gold, which symbolises the scientific side of the manufactory and stands for the stated goal of using metallurgic discoveries for watchmaking. Additionally, all three models stand out thanks to their special movement decorations, which include grained plates made of German silver and black-rhodiumed engravings on the balance cock. What is more, each of the three watches features a special dial. The dial of the Tourbograph Perpetual Honeygold “Homage to F. A. Lange” receives a unique and totally new approach. It is black-rhodiumed and, like the 43-millimetre case, consists of solid, 18-carat honey gold. The raised numerals and scales as well as the logo contrast vividly against the dark background. They are not applied and instead are raised from the material by about 0.15 millimetres. In combination with the relief, this creates an incomparable three-dimensional effect. The hands of the time and calendar displays as well as the black-rhodiumed lunar disc are made of the same gold alloy. Its two glistening,

Here, A. Lange & Söhne was able to benefit from its many years of experience in the development of highly complex chronographs. The top-mounted rattrapante (or split-seconds) hand in blued steel can be stopped independently of the gold-plated chronograph hand and also resynchronised with it via the pusher at ten o’clock. This allows any number of lap times to be stopped during a running time measurement. The mechanical switching processes are controlled with two column wheels and can be observed in real time through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The 30-minutecounter at nine o’clock completes the repertoire of chronograph displays. With their carefully orchestrated interaction, the tourbillon and the fusée-and-chain transmission minimise two unavoidable physical phenomena that are common in all mechanical watches - gravity and the waning force of the mainspring. In 1994, A. Lange & Söhne succeeded for the first time in integrating a fusée-andchain transmission in the compact dimensions of a wrist-watch. Via a fusée connected to the spring barrel with a chain, the power of the mainspring is delivered to the movement with constant force thanks to the ingenious way in which the princi-ple of levers is harnessed. A planetary gearing mechanism inside the fusée assures that the flow of power from the mainspring barrel to the escapement is not interrupted while the watch is being wound. BLUEPRINT Zenith reveals the unseen schematics of its dials in a special rendition of the Pilot Type 20, aptly named the “Blueprint”. When the team at the Zenith Manufacture came across a blueprint of its historical building, it immediately reminded them of the blueprints they had seen of earliest Aeronefs, the earliest aircrafts conceived by the pioneers of flight, most notably Louis Blériot and his Type XI aircraft that he flew across the English Channel. As the preeminent watchmaker that accompanied the earliest aviators, Zenith sought to highlight their ingenuity in a surprising way with the Pilot Type 20 Blueprint. There’s something about blueprints that sparks intrigue and curiosity. It’s what translates the wildest dreams into feasible, tangible objects. Typical of production and engineering plans in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, each element was carefully calculated and precisely drawn as the basis of a project. Now a relic from a bygone era, the blueprint continues to fascinate, and is synonymous with thorough planning and ingenious vision. When looking at a watch’s dial, one tends to pay attention to the colours, the finish, the shape of the hands and markers, the typography of the numerals, without giving much thought to the precise calculations and design considerations that go into making it. And yet, each Zenith dial is meticulously thought out and developed, where no detail is left to chance. The designers

at the Manufacture sought to highlight this “unseen” aspect of the dial, by incorporating its production plans directly onto it. Unexpected and captivating, the dial is created in two parts: a matte blue base with all technical plans and notes used by the dialmaker, and above it a sapphire crystal layer with the usual markers and logo. This creates a captivatingly deep visual effect, where the various markings cast a slight shadow on the blue base and give the impression that they’re hovering above the blueprint dial. Limited to 250 pieces, the Pilot Type 20 Blueprint remains true to the legacy of Zenith’s ubiquitous Pilot watch. The oversized steel case, finished with a mix of polished and satin-brushed surfaces, features the signature oversized “onion” shaped crown that allows the time to be adjusted even while wearing flight gloves. The side of the case features a screwed plaque bearing the unique limited edition number of the watch. Powering this wearable flight instrument is the Elite manufacture automatic movement, providing a minimum autonomy of 50 hours. In a nod to the earliest years of aviation, the blue calfskin leather strap recalls the classic shearling leather flight jacket, with rivets and a titanium pin buckle as well as a distinctive tab one would find on a vintage pilot’s helmet.

Can the US election really affect the E14 property market?

Before you say anything, I know it sounds like a stretch to say that the E14 housing market has anything to do with the US Presidential race. However, in the West, nations and their economies are now more interconnected than ever. When political tectonic plates move in the States, shockwaves reach far and wide. Local property markets in the UK are no exception. It’s worth noting at this point that we’re writing this exactly two weeks before the election, so we don’t know the result yet. At this point Jo Biden is ahead in the polls, but no one is taking anything for granted given that Hillary Clinton was in a very similar position at this point in 2016. There’s still the chance that everything could change in late October, in the same way as it did last election.

So what has any of this got to do with E14? The answer is that any election result in the US has the potential to impact on the UK economy, and the state of our economy, in turn, affects the shape and energy of the property market. The UK is currently locking horns with the EU over future trading relations. The attitude of both parties to trade with the US will provide the underlying logic of how they deal with each other. The EU is the UK's biggest trading partner and a good deal will boost the health of our economy. Whatever lies ahead, it’s a fantastic time to buy or sell your home, as long as you work with a local market expert. The E14 market is absolutely awash with opportunities so please give us a call.
