diggin In The G

A heavily textured playlist of sonic goodness -- f

I get it. You can’t get Taylor Swift’s music out of your head. You find yourself with a bad case of vertigo, shaking it off in the kitchen and screaming to the music gods to stop Taylor from massaging your eardrums. But have no fear. You won’t need Swiftamine any longer. There’s a brand new breed of fresh talent taking over the airwaves. Like when the Beatles and the rest of the Brits infiltrated our turntables, there seems to be a new trend of artists from outside the land of the yanks making some amazing music. And this time it’s the Aussies. Ready to ‘chuck a wobbly’ to some new music? WAIT...WHAT?! Chuck a wobbly....means go berserk in Aussie. Yup. Get yo dancing pants on, stretch ya neck, and treat yo self to this months playlist with a hand selected mix of music giving you a variety of genres ranging from neck cracking beats to minimalist future pop to soulful-textured-beardedPBRnB, and more. Chet Faker: His name is a tip of the hat to Chet Baker, from diggin on his dad’s albums as a kid. The sometimes man-bunned scruff of a bloke looks like he just rolled back home in his mud covered truck from the hunting camp, you wouldn’t necessarily expect these warm and rounded soul driven words to pour out of his beard framed mouth. Until

you watch him sing. Check the roller derby studded video of “Gold”. It’s absolutely hypnotic and makes you wanna bust out the short shorts, hit the skating rink, and add an extra leg day to your workout routine. Oh, and Chet sings in it somewhere too. Thief is straight nasty when it comes to making atmospheric, bass driving, minimalist beats with catchy, soulful, indiepop vocals. Check out his tight electronic rework of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me A River”. Not every artist on this list is from the land down under. Hozier is the son of a blues man. The sons voice calls to “Take me to Church!” like a true southerner. Except Andrew Hozier-Byrne hails from Ireland and sang for handfuls of choirs in his hometown before being picked up by his regional university. He very rapidly dropped-out to pursue what is real in his life, real music. Which should remind us all to be passionate in our lives. Lily Wood and the Prick, Nili Hadida is the French-Israeli lead vocalist and the producer, Robin Schultz, is one of those German folks. “Prayer in C”, I know you’ve heard this on late night radio, head bobbing in your car driving to the next late night venue. The simplified lyrics build a bleak setting of growing old and witnessing the end of time where our actions can’t be reversed and we can’t forgive ourselves...At this point, y’all better get to a church and testify! This music hits us in the heart like ….. Shake ya hips, Shake it off, and Chuck a Wobbly to this playlist all month long. Enjoy! Click the links on the Artist’s name to discover more about them and to dig for new sounds. Click the playlist link to follow the entire mix on Spotify.

I

nspired by one of the famous tales of Lewis Carroll, the Pensacola Museum of Art hosts the Exposition entitled “Alice in Wonderland” of the native British Artist Stefani Joseph. As a professor at SCAD, her work has been displayed at various expositions; in America, Europe and Asia. From the 6th of December to the 31st of January, her paintings will be at the PMA for us to enjoy. This exhibition was funded through a Presidential fellowship for Faculty Development from the Savannah College of Art & Design. The familiar and recognizable theme makes this expo very exciting and engaging; not only for those who are adept in art and art lovers alike; but for children as well.

Because of this, and the figurative nature of the representations, the connection to Joseph’s work is almost immediate. It’s when observing her paintings that the interesting research of the characters truly begins. Innate human nature will make you wonder and try to recognize those characters so popular to both adults and children. It is here that the fascinations of Joseph’s world begin: Where is Alice? What does the frog means? Why are there two or more mad hats or rabbits? Who is the Cheshire Cat and what are all those figures doing? Questions like this will naturally flow and entertain you.

Amazing and free compositions with vibrant and vivacious colors seem to be the signature of this Artist. The skilled use of the color will keep your eyes dancing about the painting from one point to another, moving from place to place‌and yet within the painting. The interesting compositions and the almost instinctual use of the color shows us that Joseph is indeed an artist who is knowledgeable and acculturated; Not only in color theory but in Art history as well.

“My paintings at first seem concerned about joyful situations such as

festivity and revelry, but on further observation, more complex subtler themes such as ambiguity, duplicity and intrigue start to emerge. These themes are synthesized in a new series of paintings based on Lewis Carroll’s book Alice in Wonderland. -Stefani Joseph

Free from the laws of perspective and from the perception of “common gravity; the compositions show us a very conscious artist where Art history has been absorbed, digested and made her own. Photo to right: Alice throws the Book away, Stefani Joseph, oil on canvas, 2010. Photographed by Daniela Summers

Matisse comes to mind when observing some of her paintings: for example, the image to the left Is evocative of “Self-Portrait in a Striped T-shirt 1906” or “Woman with a Hat, 1905”. Joseph peaks your interest by connecting with you and introducing elements of surprise. Floating goldfishes, smiling frogs, or the cupcakes are perfectly plausible in a world where after all; it is ok to celebrate a very merry unbirthday. Detail taken from: The White Rabbit Delivers the Doormouse in Yellow Teapot, Stefani Joseph, oil on canvas, 2012. Photographed by Daniela Summers.

“Actually, the best gift you could have given her was a lifetime of adventures.” -Lewis Carroll. Alice in Wonderland. The fact that many of her paintings seem to have a variety of characters interacting in an apparently festive atmosphere makes you wonder. Rarely is there one main protagonist as the “sole” and “absolute”. Even though the Rabbit seems to be a predominant character in almost every piece, it is still not just about him. In some paintings, the characters are depicted multiple times. Maybe the point is not simply about a specific protagonist as The Goldfish Swim in the Red Queen’s Garden, much as the trip, and what is happening now. Stefani Joseph, oil on canvas, 2013. Take a trip in a world full of colors where it is all about the joy of simply being there. This is a window into a world where a very busy rabbit jumps from painting to painting telling us a story that is not his alone.

New and old characters freely tell, invent and reinvent the story in a very unconventional and fresh way. You will want to know more! What will happen next?

Does her story have perhaps another With Joseph, the story is not old but still ending? Does it have an ending at all? alive. The story is not trapped in a book, and it is Meet Alice, the Rabbit and Artist Stefani Joseph not linear with beginning, middle, and end; instead through her works at our wonderful place of it is free and unrestricted, contemporary and new. wonders ‌ the Pensacola Museum of Art.

“Alice came to a fork in the road. ‘Which road do I take? ‘

‘Where do you want to go?’ Responded the Cheshire Cat. ‘I don’t know’ Alice answered. ‘Then …’ said the grinning cat … ‘It doesn’t really matter, does it?’ -Lewis Carroll. Alice in Wonderland.

Pensacola Mardi Wind Creek Pensacola Mardi Gras Kickoff Celebration

It is that time of the year once again, where Pensacola becomes consumed with color, music, parades, masks and good times for inhabitants and tourists alike. Revelers, prepare your beads, because Mardi Gras is finally here and to kick off the fun filled season is the “Twelfth Night” celebration. This festival has been known through history to mark the end of the Christmas holiday with the Epiphany or January 6th, concluding the Twelve Days after Christmas. This tradition has been celebrated since the times of Colonial America by hanging a Christmas wreath on the front door adorned with fresh fruits (hard to come by and therefore considered fine decorations) to then be eaten with the rest of the foods at the feast on the Epiphany. This of course happened in a gone by era. Now days, Pensacola celebrates with a twist and to start off the season in style, we invite you to come out and be a part of the 2015 Wind Creek Pensacola Mardi Gras Kick Off Celebration. Mark your calendars for Friday January 9th. This event is free and open to all revelers and tourists. The festivities kickoff at 5:00 P.M. in Downtown Pensacola, on the corner of Palafox and

Government Streets and is one of the most enjoyed gatherings of the year. Thousands of people will crowd our streets with laughter, music, and, the best live entertainment for both the young and old. The event boasts a 2nd Line Procession that will be led by Pensacola’s King and Queen Priscus. The floats stay still, and the revelers walk by celebrating and gathering beads from the Krewes while dancing and enjoying the evening. Krewes from Pensacola, Mobile, Ft. Walton Beach and Destin areas will be present with their royalty, all in costumes. The Krewes will be blessed by a Catholic Priest and the Town Crier will proclaim their acceptance into Pensacola’s Mardi Gras season. There will be live entertainment, the cutting of the Official City of Pensacola King Cake, and many more fun events for the entire family. The 2015 Wind Creek Pensacola Mardi Gras Kick Off Celebration is proudly sponsored by the Wind Creek Casino and Hotel located in Atmore, AL For more Mardi Gras events calendar, visit www.pensacolamardigras.com

Model Limelight featuring ERIN CUNEO Age: 24 Occupation: Service Industry Location: Pensacola, FL Where are you from originally?

I was born in Jacksonville, Florida but moved to Larose, Louisiana when I was a baby. I spent about half my life growing up on the bayou and the other growing up on the beach.

What is your next goal in your career?

Well, I just recently graduated from college with my Bachelors degree and am planning on getting my Masters soon. As for right now I’m enjoying being a 24 year old with no real plans and a ton of ideas. This has been the easiest time of my life and I think I’ll enjoy it a bit longer.

We can see your talent in modeling. What else are you interested in?

You know it’s hard to say what I’m interested in, because I like to do a lot. I really enjoy lounging around. I like to take it easy when I am not at work. I watch anime with my amazing boyfriend and we dress our cats up. I enjoy going out with my friends and grabbing dinner. I could go on but it’s just normal boring 20 something year old junk. Travel, drinking, friends, check.

PANTONE, HEMLOCK Model, METHOD Magazine May/June 2014 Photography by Melissa Wilson Photography Model Erin Cuneo Hair by Vivid Artistic Hair Design Clothing from Gibson Girl Shoes by ALDO / Aldoshoes.com

What do you like about modeling?

I like the process. Taking the pictures is kind of silly for me, here look at me while I do some stuff with my face. Though getting ready for it, that’s the fun part! The wardrobe, the makeup, the hair, and the people! Oh the wonderful people I’ve met! I never really expected to be apart of anything like this. It kind of fell in my lap and it was new, I liked it. I don’t consider myself a model or at least what other people may consider a model. Half the time I just look mad or am laughing because my face feels weird when I try to “invoke an emotion”. It’s cool to be a part of something that people put their time and effort into. I really like to help them see those things happen.

Who has been your favorite photographer or stylist to work with in your past year of creative projects?

Spoken like a politician, I can not say I have a favorite. My first photographer was Jesus Nieves and I loved him instantly. He was helping me try to act like I knew what I was doing, which made me love him even more. Melissa Wilson! The angel with a lens, she is such a sweet human being. My recent encounter with Chris Visual let me experience what hard, hard work and long hours really meant. So far as stylist go.... Derrr, Rebecca Taylor is like the flipping Van Gough of hair! My wonderful opportunity to work with her will be one that I will never forget. Wizard, a damn wizard I tell you. Of course the baby cat herself, Miss Anna Mohrbacher. I really can not put into words how it is to work with her. I can say that her styling my hair is like waking up everyday and having the best damn hair day of your life.

Interview

with a

Former Pensacola

Ice Flyer

Interview by Brooke Adams

In this edition I want to take you behind the scenes to get to know one of your Pensacola Ice Flyers. Jeremy Gates played three years of college hockey with the Neumann Knights before signing with the Fort Wayne Komets in 2012. He spent that season with the Bloomington Blaze, and began his journey with the Pensacola Ice Flyers. At the time of this interview Jeremy was still playing with the Ice Flyers, but has since been called up to play with the Rapid City Rush in the ECHL.

What has been your best hockey related memory, to date?

That’s a tough one. Winning championships are always memorable because of how hard they are to earn. Getting to play with many different players you get to call friends is always awesome. But if I had to be specific, I would say my first career pro game in Fort Wayne. It was in front of 10,500 fans. Not just that amazing experience, but my family was able to be there and it made me so happy because of how hard my mom and dad have worked in the many years that allowed me to follow my dream and passion to play hockey.

Some athletes are superstitious, what is something that you do/have always done before each of your games?

I don’t have anything crazy. I have a mental checklist I take care of before a game. Tape my sticks, have a coffee, stretch, clean my visor, and I get dressed right side to left. I always like to chew gum in warm up so I try and get the same flavor every time.

What’s the number one thing you look forward to in the off-season? Seeing the family and Golfing. Hands down.

When/why did you start playing hockey?

My mom allowed me to stay up late one night and attend my dad and uncle’s men’s league game when I was about three. My mom and dad told me I fell in love. So they signed me up to learn to skate. Everything kind of took off from there.

Who is the player you admire most?

Steve Yzerman was always my favorite growing up. Not only was he a heck of a hockey player, but I remember my dad telling me what kind of leader he was. I paid attention more and more as he played for my favorite team (Detroit Red Wings) and it was just so inspiring how he acted and was not only a great player, but a great human. Still holds true today, he is the General Manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

photo courtesy of Keith Wallace Photography -- www.keithwallacephoto.com

Of all your years playing, where has been your favorite place to play?

Two places come to mind. First was Pembroke, Ontario where I played junior hockey. The town was all about hockey and we had a great coach and great team that won two championships. I also lived with a billet family and I still have close ties with today. The other is Pensacola. I’ve been lucky enough to win two championships there and played with great players and friends. But the fans, the weather, the area and the people make being there such a pleasant experience.

Who is someone that you would consider as a mentor on the ice?

I have such a passion for the game, I like listening to a lot of people, especially coaches, with hockey minds and their insight. If I had to pick one, I would say Sheldon Keefe. He was my junior coach and currently coaching the Soo Greyhounds (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) in the OHL. I was fortunate enough to do my college internship with him and he was great about everything. He has NHL playing experience, has a passion for the game and wants players to develop skills that can take them to another level they may not know they have. He was a great motivator.

What has been one of the best pranks that you have ever witnessed/played on someone?

Off the top of my head, I can think of when I was a rookie and rookies after me, when they get their first media interview with the press, sometimes we like to sneak behind them and give them a shaving cream in a towel trick. One I like to do is unscrew a water bottle in practice on the bench and leave the cap on top loose, so when a player goes to give it a squeeze for a drink later, they dump it all down their front. They key is to be a safe distance from them when it happens and then ask them what happened (with a grin of course)?

If your life was turned into a movie, who would play you on screen & who would play your leading lady?

This is a tough one. I would say Jimmy Fallon just because he seems to have a great sense of humor. I really enjoy laughing and smiling. My lead lady, no question would be Kate Upton. She is a Michigan gal, which is where I’m from, and she is just someone I would love to ask out on a date. Even though I would most likely be rejected, I still wouldn’t be able to live with myself for not trying.
