Pretty Things PeepShow > What is your biggest secret to burlesque makeup?

The main thing about doing good hair and make up is to keep your stress level down. The more you freak out about it the worse it will get so I design my make up for every tour, practice it at home for a while then by the time we hit the road I know how to do it and don’t need to stress about it. My secret to burlesque hair is sleeping in rollers. I set them at night then take them out just before the show. It makes for the best possible hair and the lowest possible stress.

We had the pleasure of seeing The Pretty Things Peepshow at Vinyl Music Hall this last February. This unique show, originating in 2009, travels the world and performs at various event locations. Their show includes a mix of burlesque, cabaret performances, and sideshow acts.

> How many burlesque outfits do you have hiding in your closet?

We had the pleasure of speaking with Go-Go Amy, the creator of the show.

I don’t have an exact count but I would say about 20 or more. Besides Burlesque costumes I have maybe 3 dresses, one pair of jeans, a few t-shirts that I got for free from the venues we play and one pair of boots that has holes in it. All my money goes into my costumes so besides that there’s nothing else in my closet.

> How did Pretty Things Peepshow come together?

> Burlesque is known for vintage glamour. Why are you drawn to this fashion style?

The Pretty Things Peepshow is all my fault. I was working as a burlesque dancer and was hired by The Brothers Grim Sideshow. I loved being part of such a big show with such amazing acts, but they only did large festival shows in the summer and I needed work year round. My philosophy about working is that if the job you want doesn’t exist then it’s your job to make that job happen. So I started my own show and started touring the world. I collected all the performers through other shows I’ve done or people I’ve worked with.

It suits my body type to dress in this style. I’ll never be a size 0 super model. Not that I have anything against them. I don’t care what size and shape you are. Knowing who you are and how to dress for your body time is what makes you glamorous.

> What is your go-to act/song to perform?

I don’t have one go-to act or song. Since we do so many shows and we often hit the same markets I try to bring out different acts each time. I’m always trying to grow and evolve as a performer and as a show producer by bringing new cast members and adding different styles to the show.

> What is your favorite thing do when your off tour?

I like making my costumes for the show. I absolutely love sewing and it’s fun to see how many rhinestones I can possibly fit on an outfit.

> Who is the hardest to get along with after a long car ride?

Everyone has there good and bad days. There’s no one person on the show who is always a problem so I guess the worst person in the van is who ever is the most tired, hung over or who had the worst show the night before because that changes on a daily basis it could be anyone.

.....The third annual JBG (Justin Brice Griffin) Rockfest will be held on May 31st, at Harry A’s on St. George Island. .....Chris Griffin lost his younger brother in an auto accident. Describing him as someone whose whole life was dedicated to skateboarding and music, the Griffin family brought those two passions together with the creation of JBG Rockfest.

.....The annual music event raises money for a re-envisioning of the local skate park. The city has named a skate park in honor of Justin, but the goal is to expand it based on the style of skating terrain that he favored. From there, the Griffin family plans to extend the non-profit with a continued focus on the Apalachicola youth.

.....They have Kanten Russell in their corner - the pro-skater and highly sought-after skate park designer - who suggested that patience would be needed. “He told us not to get discouraged, that it could take 10-15 years to build a park like this. Ultimately, we want to cut that in half.”

.....Last year was great, it is stepping up each year, says Chris of the event. Last year’s headliners included Almost Kings. Attendance pretty much doubled from the first event. The response is amazing.

.....The year’s event headliner is The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, a band that has a very personal connection with the Griffin family. At my brother’s funeral, his band played a song called Your Guardian Angel (by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus). We’ve been huge fans of the band for years and years now.

When warmer weather rolls in, we crave sun, sand, and simple living! Who has time to stay cooped up creating dramatic winter looks anymore? They can’t take the heat and slip, slide, and separate! Reveal the glowing summer skin you crave by simplifying your routine with my summertime essentials. Best of all, you can store away all your brushes; we’ll only need our fingertips and my personal favorite beauty tool, a blending sponge!

BB creams are all the rage now, but these products are far from just a fad! A long time loved product, first revealed in skincare conscious Korea, combines good for your skin ingredients and sun protection in a formula that mimics even toned natural skin. When warmed up and stippled on with your sponge, it’s so natural, you’ll leave everyone wondering how you get away without any foundation! The secret to banishing dark circles are bisque toned brighteners! Dabbing a bit of the pinkish product over any purple or blue tones and blending in brightens up the eye contours without leaving that dreaded white cast. You’ll look refreshed and well rested! My favorite summer essential is cream blush! Quickly give your cheeks that summer flush by lightly pressing and blending onto areas that naturally catch the sun! You’ll be left with a natural glow! For deeper skin tones a blood orange is a great color choice too! I like to get more use out of my coral cream blush by popping a bit on the center of my lips to give dimension and fullness. It creates such a pretty pout! Don’t forget to top that off with your favorite lip balm or gloss! Next even out your lids with a cream shadow that

mimics your skin tone. It will brighten up your eyes without taking attention away from your perfected complexion! Another of my favorite beauty secrets is tinted brow gel! Quickly shape and define your brows with one quick swipe! It’s amazing how it will frame your face and polish up your look! Top it off with your favorite mascara! Be sure to wiggle your wand down into the root of your lash to create more definition at your lash line and a soft natural curl. My last summer skin tip is to toss the powder and opt for blotting tissues! You’ll keep your no makeup look intact by lifting up and absorbing oil into a blot paper rather than packing on powder that will cake up when mixed with your natural oils! Now that you have your new warm weather look, venture out my friends! I wish you turned up radios and rolled down windows! Sand between your toes and cool refreshing drinks in your hands! Happy Summer, everyone! Kindest regards, Kat O’Connor

PENSACON: RETURN OF THE FANDOM

BY LAUREN BURST

As a lifetime resident of Pensacola, I am often surprised to see more than three hundred people gathered in one place at one time; the obvious exceptions are the Pensacola Interstate Fair and Downtown Pensacola’s Gallery Nights. So, imagine my face as I rounded the corner at Wright Street and

Alcaniz Street to reveal hundreds of animals, time lords, elves, Storm Troopers, and you name it- all together, giddily celebrating their fandom. There was no tension in the air, not that day, despite the many lines that wrapped around the entirety of the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

.....Before Friday, February 21st, ticket sales were good, but pre-sales did not compare to the rest of the weekend. On the second day of the event, ticket sales soared, bringing in an estimated 10,000 patrons on Saturday alone. The only other event during which Pensacola generates this sort of turnout is the Pensacola Interstate Fair, or perhaps Pensacola Beach’s famed, DeLuna Fest. Pensacon proved to be everything it had promised and then some, giving the people of Pensacola something about which to be truly excited.

various cosplay and fan gear. When I finally reached the Crowne Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, I found Ernie Hudson’s celebrity panel. He and moderator, Ed Spencer, shared a few words and then Ernie began a Q&A with the audience. Hudson, of Ghostbuster’s fame, was extremely humble. He brought with him a certain calmness and intelligence that really radiated to the crowd. Once audience member asked him about his doctorate degree, as he had been introduced as ‘Dr. Ernie Hudson.’ He laughed and heartily responded, ‘You know, I’m not a doctor. I’m almost more embarrassed to admit that,’ he said, placing his hand on Ed Spencer’s shoulder. This is apparently a common mistake for Hudson since he stated in an interview several years ago that he was enrolled in a doctorate program at the University of Minnesota. Hudson spoke to an enraptured crowd for half an hour, touching on just about every topic from the Ghostbuster’s video game, his work with Brandon Lee (son of the late Bruce Lee), to his sexual tension with the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, and even some more philosophical points on fame and what it means to be an actor.

In a combined effort from both the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Pensacola Bay Center, crowds hugged the perimeters of both buildings. Patrons were cycling in and out to see various celebrity panels, purchase handmade items from vendors, and even play tabletop RPGs with other gaming enthusiasts.

.....Entering the Crowne Plaza Hotel proved to be a special sort of challenge; every entrance and exit was crowded by at least 20 people. After our tricky entrance, we had to swim through crowds of elated people, each dressed to the nines in their

.....After the panel, we went back out into the flooded hallways of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, into the main lobby, and up the twisted staircase as we followed signs promising a game room. At the end of the corridor, were conference rooms filled with large tables of people playing tabletop RPGs, board games, and collectible card games, such as: Last Night on Earth, Lords of Waterdeep, and Full Thrust: Battle for the Resurrection Ship. Some tables were wrapped in felt with diorama scenes depicting battles in forests, while others displayed miniatures which had been hand-painted by their owners and were ready for game play. Weaving in and out of these rooms, I found twenty or thirty computers, each with a ‘gamer’ or two seated in front of them, playing a first-person shooter video game on a joint server. The players were geared with headsets to communicate easily with one another. The rooms were alive with excitement and the sounds of gunfire. Another adjacent room was full of local vendors who were selling various RPGs and tabletop gear which included dice, maps, guidebooks, and figurines. I have personally never seen so many different types of dice in one place. As I marveled at the enormous display of dice, the salesman explained to me the many differences between each color and style, some which were even colored to match the twelve birthstones.

.....After a brief intermission, mostly to decompress from the madness that I had just witnessed, I headed back into the crowds to find the Star Wars-themed wedding which was taking place in the Grand Ballroom. The room was aflutter with photographers and wedding-goers who were trying to find the seat with the best vantage point. Meanwhile, the wedding party prepared themselves in a nearby alcove. Once underway, the ceremony was executed beautifully. “Marriage is the promise of a new hope,” said the wedding officiator, as Chewbacca happily chirped in agreement. The wedding party included Storm Troopers, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and lovely vows concluded by, “I love you,” and “I know,” as the iconic scene goes. Descending down the lighted walkway, Taylor and David Norton, our newlyweds, exited to the sound of the Star Wars theme. At once, the room erupted with applause, celebrating the coming together of two nerds in love. Crowds dispersed outside of the ballroom, as the bride and groom posed for numerous photographers and spoke with the press. Taylor was seen shyly giving a sweet ‘thank you’ to everyone who congratulated her.

.....At this point, I found my way out of the crowds of the Crowne Plaza and onto the crowded street, as I headed for the Pensacola Bay Center. Outside, seemingly standing guard, stood a Storm Trooper and a zombie-blasting sheriff who were readily posing for photos with excited fans. Walking through the maze of the Bay Center, I saw many faces glazed over with a sort of ‘kid-in-a-candy-store’ look in their eyes. There was a sense of camaraderie in the air, and I couldn’t help but to breathe it in. I remember thinking, ‘these are my people’-

perhaps they were not all my fandoms or my fashion choices, but the masses who attended Pensacon exhibited a passion for pop culture in a way with which I identify. The crowds were quite immense, and moving through them was akin to fighting a rip current.

.....I was not surprised to see one of Pensacola’s best kept secrets, Futurevisions Sci-Fi Books & Collectibles, with a large booth at one of the main entrances. Owner, Richard Woodward, had only a small fraction of his stock at the event, but he was as busy as ever, with his trusty, larger-than-life Rat Fink at his side. .....Continuing through the endless maze of vendor space, I saw everything from walls of stuffed animals, to a life-sized R2D2 and C3PO. There were tables upon tables of comic books, handmade jewelry, and steam punk wares. Every fandom one could possibly think of was represented. On the upper level of the Bay Center were even more vendor booths. One of these booths offered special effects makeup tutorials, as they transformed patrons from the living into full zombie makeup in a matter of one half hour. The conference rooms of the Bay Center hosted a large variety of events ranging from celebrity meet and greets and special effects makeup workshops, to ‘nerd speed dating.’ .....I would certainly say that the inaugural Pensacon was a raging success- absolute madness, but certainly a huge success, nonetheless. I cannot wait to see what next year’s Pensacon has in store.

Over the years my fascination with smalls plants has grown. I found some of the easiest to maintain are the ever so popular cacti and succulent gardens, as well as enclosed terrariums. I’ve documented a few projects I’ve worked on over the last few weeks to help anyone who may think they don’t have a green thumb! After establishment and proper sun, these beauties will be flourishing. You can pick up all of the needed items from our local craft and grocery stores. On a budget? Check out some of our local thrift shops and flea markets for cheap glassware and plants. Get crafty with your glassware and adornments. Add moss, dried flowers or small trinkets. Make it YOU. Express yourself.

METHOD / MAY & JUNE 2014

SUCCULENT/CACTI GARDEN You will need: ◊ succulents ◊ cacti & succulent potting mix ◊ small rocks ◊ container ◊ activated charcoal found wherever you can by aquarium supplies! ◊ gloves – will save you from pricks and skin irritations if you’re planting cacti! 1. Start with about 2 inches of small rocks for drainage. 2. Layer an inch of activated charcoal, this will help filter the water of unwanted bacteria growth. 3. Add 3-4 inches of soil, wet until moist. 4. Arrange succulents and cacti in soil. The easiest way for me, is to visualize the set up before getting into the soil. It’s far less stressful for both you and your plants. Another tip for transporting plants from store bought plastic pots to your arrangement - I always saturate the plant with water and “roll” the roots. By rolling the root end of your plants you’re loosening up the soil and helping reestablish root growth.

TERRARIUM You will need: ◊ glass apothecary jar ◊ small rocks ◊ sphagnum moss ◊ potting soil ◊ activated charcoal ◊ plants (slow growing, love moisture – I chose Venus flytraps and Pitcher plants) *Research your plants before planting them, sphagnum moss may not be needed! 1.) Layer about 2-3 inches of small rocks for drainage. 2.) Add ½ inch layer of activated charcoal over stones. This will help filter unwanted bacteria in the water. 3.) Add ½ inch layer of potting soil. 4.) Add 3-4 inches of sphagnum moss. 5.) Add plants! Again, I like to visualize the set up before getting into the soil. It makes the transition easier for the plant and it’s far less stressful for you. Another tip for transporting plants from store bought plastic pots to your arrangement - I always saturate the plant with water and “roll” the roots. By rolling the root end of your plants you’re loosening up the soil and helping reestablish root growth. 6.) Water until the soil is moist, top off your arrangement with glass lid and put in a sunny spot! Be mindful of how much sun your new terrarium gets. Too much sun and your plants will bake in the excessive heat! Lots of indirect sunlight works perfectly.

Achieving the Perfect White Balance By Ryan Shephard

Hello, Pensacola! Thank you so much to Ashley and the team at Method for allowing me this opportunity to contribute to such a great magazine. This city is absolutely gorgeous. From the old architecture of the local Forts to the beautiful National and State Parks, there is so much to explore, especially with your camera. I look forward to providing some great tips in this column, and also encourage feedback. If there is something you would like to see published here, be sure you e-mail me at dieselimagery@gmail.com. The entire Gulf Coast is full of sunshine and warm light. This presents unbelievable sunrises and sunsets. When the clouds start to come in, you can get those amazing contrasted pictures in both the morning and at dusk. Landscape photos become so surreal, especially in Digital HDR formats. (That’s also a column I see in the near future). I absolutely love getting exposures and color correct in-camera so that I can limit my post processing times. I enjoy spending time with my family and keeping my wife happy. It should take you no longer than 45 minutes to an hour to edit an engagement or family session. Many times, I have seen where sessions are delayed for weeks or even months. Keeping my clients happy and engaged during the time prior, the day of, and the time after is extremely rewarding both for the clients and for you. By getting color and exposure correct in-camera, it will give you the confidence to show your clients the pictures right out of the back-end of the camera. In my humble opinion, genuine emotion is one of the most important factors in capturing a moment between couples. When you have everything dialed in, you can focus on making that happen. Now for the good part: there is hope for us all! When I started shooting about two years ago, I heard about this killer invention from a company called Expo Imaging. They

designed something called the ExpoDisc. It’s a white balance filter designed for your camera and meters for eighteen percent gray. I kept asking myself, “What’s eighteen percent gray and why do I need that? I can just set my camera to Auto White Balance (AWB) and fix it later!” Man, was I wrong! It took me so much more time in post to correct my color temperature, and it was getting frustrating trying to correct associated tint with my image. My RGB channels were all over the place. It was time for a change and to get my life back. We could get into Lambert’s Cosine Law, Lamberterian reflectance, luminance intensity, reflectivity of a matte finish, eighteen percent gray for exposure, etc., but we won’t here. In addition to providing a way of measuring exposure, a gray card gives a reference for creating color in a picture or a scene. Whether you are shooting in RAW or JPEG, the eighteen percent calibrated ExpoDisc can save you A LOT of time in post processing, thus allowing you more time to spend with your family. It accurately measures for correct color balance and virtually eliminates color correction in post. You can use all forms of gray cards. In no way am I trying to sell the disc, it’s just my preferred method because of its convenience and size. My secondary method for correct color is to use my Kelvin setting. Kelvin is a color temperature measurement ranging from cool to warm. In my experience, the local temperature here at sunset ranges from 5200K-5600K and that’s what I shoot at during those time frames. Kelvin setting in-camera also measures for tint, so it’s a great tool to have in your box of photography skills. For more information about the Expo Disc, please log-on to www.expoimaging.com. Attached is an example of what the ExpoDisc can achieve. This shot is SOOC with an eye bump in Lightroom 5.

LOCAL EMERGING ARTIST

MIKAELA SHELDAT INTERVIEW BY VALENTINA SCHUCHARD

51

METHOD / MAY & JUNE 2014

I had the pleasure of meeting Mikaela last year through some common friends. From the start, I have been intrigued with this beautiful person with such an incredibly inspiring soul. She radiates so much warmth and you can’t help but feel truly comfortable in her presence. Not only is she extremely talented, she makes you feel a rush of emotions listening to her recite her poems or by simply looking at one of her paintings. That’s what makes a true artist in my opinion; she has the power to move people. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mikaela to talk about her journey and inspirations as a painter, a poet, a photographer and a surfer. VALENTINA: Mikaela, can you tell our audience a little bit about yourself? MIKAELA: I was born and grew up in East Hill until I was ten, then I moved to Charlotte, NC with my family until high school. After that, I continued on to Atlanta, Georgia where I went to college and obtained my Bachelor in Arts degree in 2010. Pensacola was where my heart belonged, where things felt right, where the happy moments of my childhood were, and where the gulf I loved to swim in was, so, I decided to come back ‘home’ and start fresh. VALENTINA: What medium of art do you make? MIKAELA: For example: if I want to work fast, I use ink. If it’s a calm, methodical painting, I use oil. For layers of bright colors, I use acrylic. It all depends on what the emotions of the individuals I’m portraying inspire me. VALENTINA: Do you have a specialization? MIKAELA: I like working on a larger than life scale, this way you can capture emotions. Large scales speak loudly to you. They have so much movement and engagement with space. I want people to feel things; big paintings make you feel, connect, and show emotions. VALENTINA: What are your other artistic endeavors? MIKAELA: I write, but, to me there is no separation between the two. Writing and painting are an extension of me; my life is my work, my identity. VALENTINA: What’s your advice for other emerging artists? MIKAELA: I would tell them to always be in the studio working, delivering, and always keeping the door open to your creative self. When the door is open, something will come through it. Don’t be afraid to give one hundred percent of yourself, dig deep and put everything out there.

VALENTINA: How did your passion for art develop? MIKAELA: It was born as a way for me to process my emotions, the things that happened in my life. With my brother (and best friend) Michael passing, art became my way of showing my emotions to the world. VALENTINA: What inspires you the most? MIKAELA: My interaction with people. The more I make experiences, the more I meet people, the more I challenge my experiences, and the more I create. VALENTINA: Where can the people of Pensacola see your work? MIKAELA: My art is mainly displayed at “Mainline Art House” on 422 S. Palafox St. You can contact them for studio visits.

TALKING WITH MY BROTHER

I tried calling you today I wanted to talk about the weekend About the surf we had and the food we ate How it rained all day I wanted to talk about how We were the first ones in the water You would have been so proud

If I had gotten a hold of you today I would have asked for advice About how to worry less How to love more I would have asked if you’re ever coming home Or when I’ll see you again I just wish you could see The way he makes me smile. I wanted to tell you about the ocean If you were here And how it changed me You would be so proud How I know what I want now. If you could see I wanted to tell you about Jimmy The way I swim in the ocean now How he makes me laugh the way you did You would be so proud. How he gets angry When I’m careless. I just wanted you to know He looks out for m. He has this way of pushing me and loving me That makes me want to be a better person. I gave him a piece of myself Like the one I gave you I’m not sure he knows it’s in his pocket Sometimes I worry he’ll leave The way you did And I’ll have to learn how to be empty again.

THUNDER BEACH’S 16TH ANNUAL SPRING RALLY TAKES PLACE APRIL 30TH - MAY 4TH. Bikes, music, and babes; that’s the most obvious way to sum up the biannual Panama City Beach event, which celebrates motorcycle culture. Whether it is the sound of loud exhaust pipes or guitars that speaks to you, the Spring Rally is about more than what meets the uninitiated’s eye. With contests that honor craftsmanship, charity poker runs, and the Sgt. Kevin Kight Memorial Bike Parade - this event is akin to a family reunion (where nearly everyone dons leather). Each rally brings out riders by the thousands, and the majority of events are free and open to the general public. Richard Otinger fronts Buck Wild - a band that’s been playing the rally kick-off party for the last three years. Before he was a part of the entertainment himself, he attended since the beginning. The rally has evolved a lot in the past sixteen years. After being cooped up all winter, more and more folks are flocking to the Spring Rally. What does Otinger most look forward to? “We love performing for all our biker friends. We love hanging out with our friends down there - to ride and play music is the best of both worlds.” LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SPRING RALLY AT THUNDERBEACHPRODUCTIONS.COM

Single ladies (and gentlemen, respectively), why is it that any time one of us goes somewhere alone, people feel the need to confirm that we are really… alone? It seems every time we place an order for a single hot coffee, we are bombarded with “well-meaning” questions about our love life. As if to add salt to our wounds, when we go home to our cold beds, where we should be safe from that contagious love bug and all its nagging, there is an overabundance of commercials aimed at couples. Almost as if to spite us, the characters seem to be unnecessarily (and unrealistically) happy together. I mean, how many “Every Kiss Begins with Kay” commercials do we really need to see during Jimmy Kimmel? If every kiss really began with Kay, do you realize how much debt you would accumulate? Like I said, unrealistic. Take note of your Facebook newsfeed. You are not alone. I am constantly assured of this by the wide array of status updates confirming just how many of my friends and acquaintances are still single - and which ones are either very upset by this or ridiculously liberated by it. Those of us who are lonely are in great company. In our not-so-secret society (which all our old married buddies secretly miss), nothing can stop us… except perhaps the piercing eyes of our grandparents over the dinner table on Christmas break. The holidays are meant to be spent with family and loved ones, so when we make that trip home we are inevitably forced to listen to our family members interrogate us about settling down. They grill us about when we will be bringing a “nice young man/woman” home. Gee… Thanks, Ma. It can be a little unnerving. Especially in the past several months, with everyone so twitter-painted from Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and now all the way through Valentine’s Day. People in couples are constantly talking about how grateful they are for their significant other on Thanksgiving, what they plan to get them for Christmas, and how romantic their Valentine’s Day was. They always seem to be gloating about cozying up to one another during the cold, and don’t forget the bragging about that traditional New Year’s Kiss. So, what can we do to overcome the feeling of loneliness? Here are three key steps to coping: 1. Don’t see your glass as half empty. One day you will miss the freedom you had when you were single. Even if you are the type of person who genuinely enjoys being in a relationship, understand that - cliché as it may seem - there are plenty of fish in the sea; so enjoy fishing! That special person is out there somewhere, and you should try to make the search for them into something fun rather than daunting. Attempting to speed up the process by rekindling an old flame just for Valentine’s Day smooches, going on dating websites in a last minute effort to bring someone to the family dinner table, or frequenting the bar

scene to find someone, will only put you at risk for letting the wrong person into your life. Finding the right person takes time and patience. 2. Stay busy. The more you are out and about doing the things that you enjoy doing, the more opportunity you will have to meet new people - and potentially, the right person. Someone who shares those same or similar interests as you. There is truth in the saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Create new traditions with old and new friends. Spend that much more time with your family. Go out! When you focus on whatever in your life makes you happy, you have very little time to dwell on what can make you unhappy. 3. Finally, learn to love yourself. Be content with who you are. Desperation only brings opportunity for disaster. You can’t expect anyone else to be able to love you if you’re unable to love yourself. If you find a way to be happy with yourself while still working on your flaws for now (no one is perfect), you can focus more on loving the person you are meant to be with when they finally do come along.

Honestly, there is nothing you can do about your mother’s constant nagging, other than to let her know you haven’t found that person yet. There’s a reason this article wasn’t entitled “Dealing with Mom’s Fear of You Becoming a Crazy Cat Lady/ Dude Whose Orientation is Constantly in Question.” It’s not about making them happy; it’s about you becoming comfortable with where you are. As we continue through this new year of adventures, understand that there’s a chance for reflection and opportunity. Reflect on yourself up to this point. Be okay with being alone. A new relationship should add to the quality of your current life, not take away from it. Cherish your time as a single person, because you are getting ready for that right person to share in your happiness. Be optimistic; today you may be sipping on coffee by yourself in the corner of a Starbucks somewhere, but tomorrow brings the prospect for two grandee Caramel Macchiatos side by side.

Throughout our lives, we are at a constant battle with the dominance of our emotions and how they shape our interactions in our day-to-day lives; how we handle anger with our physical needs, or how we handle sorrow with things lost. One of the major battles we have is our need to feel happy, our desire to feel a sense of pleasure from the physical world. Some of us try to fulfill this by chasing a euphoric paradise, something that could take years to achieve before bliss is found, if it ever is. Others may only need a few days before a self-actualization of joy is realized. A well-known psychologist, Abraham Maslow, came up with a hierarchy of needs which we undergo before we can grasp a sort of happiness which will follow us through life. However, you don’t need a chart, or a myriad of scientists to tell you how to achieve happiness. Happiness starts with you, and there are a few simple ways to lead yourself into a brighter future. Love yourself: Many people seem to

neglect and overlook themselves. We try so hard to do things that make us happy, that we forget that our bodies are one of the biggest sources of happiness. We neglect to tell ourselves, “You are beautiful.” A very important thing to do for yourself is, with every morning routine, add in five minutes of standing in front of the mirror (naked of course). Look yourself in the eyes and repeat, “I love you.” Look at every nook and cranny, and say, “I love you.” Look at every stretch mark, every ounce of muscle and fat, every bruise, every overlap, every shadow and every flaw, and say, “I love you.” Our bodies do so much for us; they fight infections, protect us from the outside world, heal us when we are sick. They literally love us with their very existence. It’s time that we start loving them back.

Exercise your right to say “No”:

Putting yourself and your happiness first sometimes is truly important. Always remember that you don’t have to feel inclined to say “Yes” to every task and request. If you don’t feel the need to perform such a task or do such an action, then simply revel in your ability to say

79

METHOD / MAY & JUNE 2014

“No”! This can apply to many situations, such as taking time for yourself by declining the invitation to go out with friends, or declining that forceful mall kiosk client accosting you to buy the latest hands-free hairdryer. By saying no to things you wish not to do, you give yourself power to take back your life.

Cut out the toxic things in your life:

Many times it is hard for people to cut out the negative aspects of their lives, especially if those toxic things are actually people. Understand that happiness cannot be achieved if you choose to bog yourself down with poisonous influences. If you realize that you have an unhealthy habit or relationship, cut it out. Addictions can be hard to cut cold turkey, so pace yourself. If you are cutting fast food out of your diet, then take it slow, and wean yourself off. Starting from only three visits a week, to only once every two weeks! When it comes to cutting the negative people from your life, always remember that if the person you’re around makes you feel more upset than happy, then they’re not adding anything positive to your life. A flower can only grow so much in a garbage dump.

40

“Some people go their entire lives hidden in a shell, too afraid to come out for fear of being hurt or uncomfortable.”

Find your fashion: Since clothes are kind of a legal issue, especially when it comes to public settings, you might as well find a fashion choice that fits your lifestyle. Try out different styles! Discover color combinations and shades that complement your complexion, and find a style that fits your body type. Do you enjoy wearing high-waisted pants with a tank top and flip-flops? Then go ahead, and rock it out! Don’t think that just because a model runs down the runway in heels, a long dress and pinned up accessories that you have to be happy doing the same thing. Fashion is beautiful, but it’s also individual. Discover yourself through clothes. Who knows what kind of wardrobe you might have every few months? Treat yourself: Don’t forget that this is

your life, and you should live it accordingly. No one has the right to tell you how to live it; no one is standing over your shoulder dictating how you need to do this or that. If they are, they’re probably one of those poisonous influences we talked about. You have the control of your own life, and you deserve to treat yourself for hard work from time to time. Go to a spa, buy that shirt you really like online, and go eat that steak dinner you’ve been drooling over for months. It’s great to work for what you have, but if you don’t learn how to take a break from reality to take a dip in your own fantasy from time to time, you might just go insane.

Find a hobby: We all have some sort of

hidden talent. Your neighbor might be a contortionist, or your mom might know the ancient art of Judo. Find an activity that brings you peace, and one that you enjoy. You don’t even have to be good at it. Does sitting in your living room for twenty minutes a day, wildly strumming at the strings of a guitar bring a smile to your face? Then find a comfortable pillow to sit down and strum away! If you can hold onto a small hobby, it’ll grow into something that you can fall back on from time to time. A good hobby can even get you through some bad clouds, such as a break up or death in the family. It’s something to ease your mind and soul.

Step out of your comfort zone:

Some people go their entire lives hidden in a shell, too afraid to come out for fear of being hurt or uncomfortable. Inversely, others are too open, too vulnerable to be hurt by another. Part of life is discovering who you are, and your comfort level is a great place to start. Take some time to meditate about what you enjoy vs. what makes you uncomfortable. Understand what can tick you off, and what makes you uneasy. Then, from time to time, take a risk and jump outside of those boundaries. For example, if you normally go to a restaurant and get the same meal every time because you’re afraid something else may not taste as good, understand that the meal you order will be there as a fall back. You can try that new meal without any repercussions of having it replace your old meal. Should you choose to like it, you can even have a new usual on the menu! Life is about exploration; know your limits, but constantly push them. You are your own best friend.

Don’t stress over things you can’t control, and don’t complain about things you can: This tip is very

important, especially for controlling the stress levels in your life. When you analyze a situation, understand your level of control over it. If it’s something that you have no direct influence on, understand it’s beyond your control. We all need to take a deep breath from time to time and tell ourselves that we can’t and shouldn’t control everything. We cannot dictate the actions of others; therefore we can only be like water and go with the flow of life. However, if there is a situation in which you are able to control, don’t waste precious energy complaining about it. If there is a negative situation with an acquaintance which can be safely avoided, avoid it. Should you feel the need to insert yourself into said situation, understand that you made that decision and shouldn’t complain about your own choices. These simple steps can dually help in bringing happiness to the soul and peace to the mind.

Major league baseball returned to Pensacola on March 28th, 2014 when the Cincinnati Reds traveled to Pensacola to take on the Blue Wahoo’s. People stood in a line that stretched from the box office at Maritime Park down Main Street, selling out in less than four hours. The excitement for the game built in response to the rapid ticket sales. Unfortunately, Mother Nature washed out what should have been a night for the record books. The game was unable to be played, but fans were still able to be some of their favorite Cincinnati Reds players. This was the first time a Major League Team has scheduled to play in Pensacola since 1958 when the Chicago White Sox played the St. Louis Cardinals. The Blue Wahoo’s will begin another season as part of the Southern League joined by nine other teams located in major cities throughout the south. There are four teams in Alabama, three teams in Tennessee, two teams in Florida, and only one team in Mississippi. Starting in the 2015 season, The Huntsville Stars will be moving from their home in Huntsville, Alabama to Biloxi, Mississippi. This will give Wahoo fans the option to travel to more away games.

The Blue Wahoo’s coaching staff is no stranger to the league, or to the world of baseball itself. Team manager Delino DeShields, who is returning to Pensacola for his second season, made his Major League Debut in 1990 playing for the Montreal Expos. DeShields split his major league years between five different teams. Managing the Blue Wahoos came after his two years managing the Cincinnati Red’s Single A farm team, The Dayton Dragons. Blue Wahoo’s Pitching coach for the 2014-2015 season will be Jeff Fassero. Fassero started his major league career in 1990 with the Montreal Expos and ended his major league stint in 2006 with the San Francisco Giants. Not only did Fassero and DeShields make it to the pro scene at the same time, they were also teammates in the 2001-2002 seasons with the Chicago Cubs. Alex Pelaez will be stepping in to take over the role of the Wahoo’s hitting coach. Palaez spent eight years in the minor leagues with the Padres, Angels, and the Reds. He made it to the big leagues in the 2002 season with the San Diego Padres. With a staff like this, the Blue Wahoos are in for a great season.

Baseball may be America’s favorite pastime, but not everyone is a pro when it comes to knowledge of the sport. Here are a few things that can help get you started. Most teams are made up of a 25 man roster. The roster typically includes the following: -eight position players; a catcher, four infielders, and three outfielders who play all the time -five starting pitchers who constitute the team’s pitching rotation or starting rotation -six relief pitchers, including one specialist closer, who constitute the team’s bullpen -one backup or substitute, catcher
 -two backup infielders
 -two backup outfielders
-one specialist pinch hitter, or a second backup catcher, or a seventh reliever

That’s right, an ice hockey team. For those of you who have never attended a Pensacola Ice Flyers game, you are certainly missing out. After starting last season with a new coach and a fairly young group of guys, the Ice Flyers and Coach Gary Graham fought hard and dealt with a major amount of roster changes due to the NHL lockout. But they overcame the challenges, and were faced with and won the first professional sports title the City of Pensacola has ever seen. The Pensacola Ice Flyers started the 2013-2014 season defending the Presidents Cup and have done a fantastic job of doing so. The Ice Flyers have seemingly been neck and neck with The Louisiana Ice Gators since the puck dropped back in October. Team Capitan, Ryan Salvis, was on the championship team last season and has returned again this year to help lead this team to another Presidents Cup victory. Not only does Pensacola have a championship team on the ice, but off the ice as well. The guys who come through Pensacola playing hockey are living their dream and have nothing but appreciation and thanks for the fans that come out to support them. “We’ve got a great organization here,” Salvis says, “An owner and management that is very passionate about winning and willing to help us out any way possible.” Of course many people don’t complain about having a beach so close to home. Most of the players that make it to Pensacola are use to snow being on the ground for the majority of the year. Ryan Salvis is a Canadian native and isn’t afraid to tell you about how much he enjoys living on the beach. “Obviously living on the beach is a huge perk. The houses we live in are extremely nice and new. I’m almost certain you can’t find better living situations in minor pro. “ In February, Pensacola became the first team of the 2014 season to clench a seat in playoffs. Capitan Ryan Salvis is sure to be a positive force behind the rest of the team as playoffs approach and the pressure to win rises. “We are just trying to work on team things that need improvement. There are always some on-ice issues that the team can improve on so we’re making sure that everyone is on the same page and we’re on top of our game. We’ve been on a great

PENSACOLA ICE F LY E R S :

PRESIDENTS CUP CHAMPIONS little run lately but we can always improve on little things that make us even better.” The regular season ended March 22nd and playoffs began the following weekend. The Ice Flyers were seeded in the first place spot. They faced the Mississippi Surge in the first round, and beat them with ease in the first two games of the series. In the second round, our Ice Flyers faced off with the Knoxville Ice Bears in the best of three series. The series was forced to be decided in a game three win sending the Ice Flyers to the finals. They faced off with the Columbus Cottonmouths in the Presidents Cups Finals. A scene that is all to familiar to the fans of both teams, as they played each other two years in the finals where the Cottonmouths beat the Ice Flyers for the Presidents Cup. In the final round of playoffs The Cottonmouths came to Pensacola in hopes of winning. However, The Ice Flyers had a different idea. Less than three minutes into game one the Ice Flyers had scored three goals ultimately setting the mood for the final series. Columbus wasn’t going down without a fight though as the roughing began and penalties were being called. After scoring six goals on Columbus netminder, Andrew Loewen, Cottonmouths head coach decided to put in female goalie Shannon Szabados who is the first female to play in the SPHL, as well as having two Olympic gold medals with Canada’s womens hockey team. The goalie change didn’t stop Pensacola from defending what was theirs as the final score of 9-1 made that obvious. Both teams headed to Columbus for game two where Pensacola beat the Cottonmouths 5-1, becoming the 2014 Presidents Cup Champions, earning them back to back titles. Captain Ryan Salvis gave his final words on the season as this, “To win the cup in Pensacola is an amazing feeling and a great honor. To win it back to back I feel so blessed and proud. It just shows how much focus and hard work we all put in this season”.

Zodiac

written by Ali Roudabush

Throughout documented history, mankind has looked to the stars for answers to many of life’s questions. It is popular belief that astrology has a direct relationship with the character traits of every human being based upon the position of the planets on their birth dates. The earliest documented astrology comes from Egypt, but it was not until it was later adopted by the Babylonians that astronomy became a practiced science. The Babylonians used the position of the stars to predict seasons and certain celestial events. Their system of charting these astrological positions was spread to the Greeks, and it is through many well-received Greek philosophers, such as Plato and Socrates, that astronomy gained scientific merit. It was from the Greeks that the Romans gained the knowledge of astronomy, and they advanced the science even further. The Romans were the first group to assign a constellation to the zodiac through plotting the stars in the sky. It was also through astrology that the Romans learned about the twelve lunar cycles during one year. Derived from the Greek term meaning ‘circle of animals,’ the ‘Zodiac’ was the name given to these constellations or star maps. The zodiac which was established by the Romans is the same same zodiac that we know today as Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn. The Romans also named four elements involved in the seasonal cycles, and each animal and month of the zodiac is considered to associated with water, air, earth, or fire. Several hundred years after Europe developed a system of astronomy, astrological calendars began to also appear in China. It was during the Han Dynasty in second century BC that astrology became a popular belief. While little is truly known about the exact origins of the Chinese zodiac, there is a story that has been passed through antiquity. In this story, the Jade Emperor who ruled Heaven and Earth chose to name each year of a twelve-year calendar after an animal. To choose which animals would be named, he had them compete in a race across a raging river using their own unique method to cross. It was due to the rat’s cunning that he was able to cross first, and therefore, the beginning of the cycle of Chinese Astrology starts with the Year of the Rat. The animals included in the Chinese Zodiac are: (listed in order) the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Because only five planets were known at the time when the Chinese Zodiac was put into practice, only five planets are represented, and each planet symbolizes an element. Chinese Astrology also utilizes the philosophy of harmony represented by the yin and yang, and each year is associated with one of these harmonies. Today, both the Eastern and Western worlds still practice astronomy, and while there are many people who do not believe that the stars have anything to say about them, it is difficult to discredit thousands of years of astrological study.

The Year of the Green Horse CHINESE ZODIAC

Since the Chinese New Year on January 31, we have entered the Year of the Horse. Because the elements associated with the Chinese Zodiac rotate in a 60-year cycle, this year the horse is paired with the element wood, which is symbolized by the color green. Therefore, this is the Year of the Green Horse. The horse is considered to be the Chinese people’s ethos. The horse is constantly seeking improvement. They are bright, energetic, warm hearted, able bodied, and intelligent. Like a horse, who uses intuition and body language to communicate with their handlers, those born in the year of the horse are fantastic communicators. Because wood, like solid earth, is favorable to the horse, this year is bound to hold limitless possibilities for Horses. Horses love the limelight. They are clever and kind, but can be stubborn. They hate large crowds and can be impatient and hot-blooded.

AQUARIUS January 23rd- February 15th Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the Western Zodiac. The sign is personified as a water carrier, bearing the gift of life. This image poses a fantastic comparison to those born as an Aquarian. Aquarians are drawn to silver and blue palettes. As they are natural humanitarians, Aquarians strive to improve the world in which they live, and readily motivate those around them to assist. Progress is a way of life for the Aquarian, and they are constantly seeking out the latest and greatest technology. Although generally cheerful, they can be temperamental when others do not agree with their visions. In love, Aquarians are quite capable of committing to long relationships, but due to their flirtatious personality and complete lack of jealousy, they are often misunderstood. Astrologers describe Aquarians as being in thought mode. The characteristics of Aquarians can be broken into three distinct groups based on the specific week they were born. The first phase, or Aquarius I, falls on the week of January 23rd to 30th*. (*Although most horoscopes do not recognize the cusp period between two signs, we have. A certain writer, yours truly, was born on a cusp, and I feel as though I posses traits from both signs. For the sake of this article, January 23rd is the first true day of the Aquarius sign.) The Aquarius I period is said to be the ‘Week of Genius.’ These Aquarians learn more quickly than most, and they seem to wear an air of alertness, even to the point of being considered ‘high strung.’ Their quick nature can cause them to be impatient or irritated with slow decision makers or people who freely express their emotions. Aquarius Is are easily bored with their situation, but can persevere when duty calls. They believe that experience is indeed the best teacher, and often many of the Aquarius I’s acquired special skills are self-taught. In love, they do not accept restrictions from their mate, as they have an innate need for personal freedom. At work, Aquarius Is can be rebellious; they want things to happen their way, and rarely do well at jobs in which they are frequently told what to do. This is partly due to the fact that they are natural born leaders, yet they do not typically possess a true conviction to do so. Alas, the brilliant Aquarius I is also prone to self-destructive behavior.

The second week of Aquarius, January 31 - February 7, is considered the ‘Week of Youth and Ease.’ Aquarius IIs despise conflict and avoid confrontation at all costs. They embody a certain ‘laissez-faire’ attitude, preferring to be left alone to figure things out for themselves. Similarly, they do not attempt to control others or to meddle in their affairs. Aquarius IIs value both short and long term happiness and are a rather virtuous group. Those born during this week in Aquarius display a mastery of medium. Whatever their pronounced craft may be, they must make it seem effortless, whilst in fact, a great deal of thought and practice has gone into the final result. This mastery of skills usually happens before the age of twenty, and their abilities run through their lifetime. Aquarius IIs are youthful, and most often appear younger than their years. If great fame or popularity amongst peers is achieved, it can cause the Aquarius II to cling to certain expectations rather than asserting themselves, for fear of losing their followers. In love, Aquarius IIs may avoid deep emotional connection in order to maintain a certain anonymity. This disconnect is an attempt to avoid the conflict involved in a tragic breakup. They tend to find attraction in deep or troubled mates, which is merely a projection of their own dark side. The Aquarius III phase occurs the week of February 8th through February 15th. This phase is also called the ‘Week of Acceptance,’ due to the accepting, altruistic nature of the Aquarius III. These kind traits may begin in the Aquarius IIIs childhood, or they may have developed throughout their lifetime. To the Aquarius III, finding balance only comes from learning to keep an open mind while being on guard against negative influences. Despite their distaste for intolerance, Aquarius IIIs are surprisingly prone to quick, explosive anger . They love movement, activity, and motion, as well as irony and wit. Although they are quick to criticize themselves, they can become irate when other’s point out their faults. Aquarius IIIs crave love and attention and devote much of their time to seeking affections. Because the many needs of the Aquarius III demand a range of partners and friendships, it can be difficult for them to find love before the age of 30.

Those born between February 16th and February 22nd are considered to be on the Aquarius-Pisces Cusp. This week is called the ‘Cusp of Sensitivity.’ This group is highly success-oriented, giving top priority to their own career. While all Aquarius-Pisces are sensitive, each of them will either tend toward an Aquarius personality, who posses a gentle, outgoing personality, or a Pisces personality, who turns their emotions inward. The Aquarius-Pisces usually have a stronger bond with the parent of the opposite sex. In love, The Aquarius-Pisces may

struggle to be truly open with their partners, often making them feel vulnerable to losing their mate. In their relationships, they display both masculine and feminine qualities. Males are sometimes considered ‘unusually sensitive’ by society’s standards, while females are often rather aggressive. Aquarius-Pisces tend to seek out the opposite of themselves in a partner for love and marriage. Close friendships may help them hone their feelings of humanity and ease their feelings of isolation.

PISCES February 23rd-March 18th Pisces is the twelfth sign of the zodiac. Pisces, one of three water signs in the zodiac, is symbolized as two fish joined by a string while swimming in opposite directions. The conflict of these two fish represents Pisces’ internal struggle to find balance between the real world and the unseen world of human emotions and spirituality. As Pisces are a very sensitive group, they are often times more prone to psychic ability and insights. They are highly involved in the physical world, and rarely tend to be at rest. According to Western astrology, the best matches for a Pisces is a Cancer (June 21-July 22) or Scorpio (October 23-November 22.) Like Aquarius, Pisces can be broken down into three distinct groups. The first week is the ‘Week of Spirit,’ and the dates are February 23rd through March 2. Pisces Is value non-material things, but they approach their work with devotion. They view it as a mental and physical outlet as much as it is a means for monetary gain. Sensuous by nature, Pisces Is love to indulge in the pleasures of both the table and of the bed. They are lively, youthful, and often entertaining. They are also very likely to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Pisces Is feel a strong desire to improve the world. This drive for improvement causes them to be service-oriented, always putting the needs of others before their own. Unfortunately, they may fall prey to selfish personalities. Pisces Is have a tendency to place high expectations on friendships, and they may feel hurt when a friend does not live up to these expectations. They have a difficult time trying to conceal their feelings, and are often compelled to share on a deeper level. Unfortunately, often times this talk of one’s self may portray the Pisces I as a cynic and a know-it-all. In love, Pisces Is are on a search for the ideal mate; they may bounce from one relationship to another as they pursue their hunt for perfection. Once their ideal is found, they will not hesitate to settle down permanently. Even though the Pisces I may seem emotionally distant at times, they will remain loyal and devoted. The second phase of Pisces, Pisces II, is considered the ‘Week of

the Loner.’ It occurs March 3rd through March 10th. As you can probably guess, the Pisces II is very private. Less balanced Pisces IIs tend to isolate themselves from the world, and their homes are kept very private. Despite their isolation, they understand well the difference between being lonely and just being alone. The Pisces II is actually capable of spending a lot of time alone without speaking to others. They do not trust people who are loud and aggressive, as well as those who show little sensitivity to others. Despite their cynical mistrust of others, it is their honesty and virtue that prevents them from acting in harmful ways towards others. The Pisces II is more attuned to physical expression such as dance, sports, or other sensual movements. They love everything about music, and they share empathy for all human suffering. Pisces IIs tend to work in environments that will make solid demands of them and yet still allow creativity. The loner inside the Pisces II hates large crowds; instead, they crave small, intimate settings. In love, the Pisces II is more likely to be attracted to superficial attributes in their mate. The Pisces III phase is the week of March 11th through March 18th. This is the ‘Week of Dreamers and Dancers.’ Pisces IIIs begin to ponder the meaning of life at a young age. They have very well-developed scientific and technological skills. Pisces IIIs feel the need to assist others and influence the lives of those around them. They would consider themselves teachers, although their eloquent way of speaking may antagonize people. Pisces IIIs have a tendency toward clairvoyance or telepathic abilities. People who encounter the Pisces III may consider them the have an air of mystique. When they try to achieve great goals, they will have a better chance of success than most anyone. A vulnerability shared by Pisces IIs is their need to feel as though they count. They are rather good listeners and are relatable. In love, Pisces IIIs are drawn to unstable relationships, but once they make a positive and nurturing commitment, they can be quite loyal and devoted.

PISCES-ARIES CUSP March 19th-March 24th Those born between March 19th and March 24th are considered to be on the Pisces-Aries Cusp. This cusp aligns with the Vernal Equinox and is also called the ‘Cusp of Rebirth.’ These individuals are very direct and outspoken, which are both admirable traits to those who get to know the Pisces-Aries, but from an outsider’s point of view, these traits can be abrasive. In their own mind, they are dreamers and explorers, while externally, they may be perceived as unrealistic and out of touch. Those born on this cusp are very often misinterpreted. With pure intentions, they may

make generous offers to others only to be perceived as condescending. The Pisces-Aries is generally successful. They are stubborn and refuse to give up, and when confronted with failure, they may even ignore their defeat altogether. In love, these individuals are fiery and passionate. They may be faithful to their mates, but often they are swayed by the excitement of a new partner. While physical infidelity is common, emotional attachment is more lasting; if a Pisces-Aries can keep a mate, they will be highly devoted.

ARIES March 25th-April 18th Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac. The Aries constellation is a symbol of a ram, and like the ram, the Aries personality can be independent yet very forceful. Aries are considered born leaders; with natural personal magnetism, they are fantastic motivators and project initiators. Although, they may be helpful in getting the proverbial ‘ball rolling,’ Aries may have a difficult time following through. While they begin many projects, they will not hesitate to move on to the next if there is promise of a good time. Aries are very blunt and to the point, and with very competitive spirits, they harbor a true drive to be a part of the game. In love, Aries can be very playful yet sweet with their mate. It is no surprise that the color associated with the Aries sign is bright red. As a fire sign with such a fiery personality, it would seem that red poses a great comparison to the mighty Aries. The first phase of Aries, or Aries I, happens between March 25th and April 2nd. This is also called the ‘Week of the Child.’ Those born during this phase can be likened to a new being exploring the world around them, full of curiosity and wonder.Aries Is most likely display a direct response or immediate expression, they do not hide or shelter their feelings from the world, and they feel it is essential for them to bear their soul in such a way. Despite a childlike demeanor, Aries Is are very independent, preferring not to be aided by parents. They often times assume a more subdued, quiet lifestyle, which is a response to years of criticism and misunderstanding. Outside of the workplace, the Aries I may spend a considerable amount of time alone, but most of their work involves groups. While the Aries I would prefer not to be in a leadership position, they feel the need to play an integral role in operations. When it comes to ethical issues, the Aries I will stick to their guns, they follow their heart, even if their beliefs are taboo or possibly illegal. These sensitive individuals may respond to feelings of being

misunderstood with quick anger, or they may leave the room, altogether. The best suited mate for an Aries I is a partner who allows them to act freely and independently. Extramarital affairs may be more common for the Aries I, as they do not view the affair as a transgression, rather an exploration and an adventure, these are basic needs for an Aries I. The second phase of Aries, or Aries II, is also called the ‘Week of the Star,’ and it encompasses the dates April 3rd through April 10th. Those born at this time are comparable to a young child who has just realized their own independence. Like a rebellious toddler, Aries IIs are ready to experiment and to push the limits of the world and the people around them. They believe that it is only through this sort of exploration they they will learn to fit into the world. Aries IIs put themselves into the center of things. Because they often feel alone, even in a crowd, they will ensure that they are never truly physically alone. Despite their ego, they are able to set these feelings aside and focus their energies into a project or cause. They are highly goal-oriented, and will reach their goal by any means necessary. Unfortunately, in doing so, they may neglect the feelings of others, and it may not bother the Aries II, as they tend to have low empathy for their fellow man. Aries IIs are instilled with a strong will to succeed which can cause them to be impatient with the less motivated, but when all of their fiery energies are balanced, they have the power to shine. When it comes to working with the Aries II, the best way to win their respect and friendship is to show them that you are as driven and hardworking as they are. These working bonds can form strong, lasting friendships. In love, they require patience from their mates, as they are not quick to reveal their deepest levels. It may require much time and effort for the Aries II to allow anyone into their private realm.

April 11th through April 14th is the ‘Week of the Pioneer.’ This is the third phase of Aries, or Aries III. The pioneer is an explorer, much like the knowledge-hungry Aries III. They are highly interested in learning about human culture through books and media, as well as joining group activities. In fact, the Aries III is much more socially involved than any other phase of Aries, most likely due to their proximity to the social Taurus. Aries IIIs are natural leaders, as they are selflessly interested in bettering the work and living environments for themselves as well as their followers and coworkers. Alas, their desire to do good can also lead to situations in which they are taken advantage of, whether it be financially or emotionally. This cycle of giving to others can cause a strain on their own personal families.

The Aries III is always willing to sacrifice in the name of achieving better results, and they demand sacrifices of those around them as well. This may lead to their offspring being rather rebellious. Aries IIIs do not enjoy being alone, and they may even have trouble with intimate relationships due to their need for group interaction. In love, an Aries III requires a very sexual relationship. Their mates may be frustrated from neglect, as the Aries III is constantly on the go and out saving the world. They have no time or patience for negativity, and may turn a cold shoulder to a mate who is merely trying to blow off steam. On a positive note, an Aries III can make a great partner. They have a lot to offer and are rather fun-loving.

ARIES-TAURUS CUSP April 19th-April 24th The Aries-Taurus Cusp happens between April 19th and April 24th. This is the ‘Cusp of Power.’ Although spring is viewed by most as a cheerful time in which life renews, this was not always the case. In past times, spring has been the backdrop of blood rituals in many cultures, including Christian Easter and Jewish Passover. The individuals born on this cusp seem to be drawn to power; they seek to gain as much of it as possible and by any means necessary. Despite their cut-throat attitude, the Aries-Taurus knows that brut force is not always the best or fastest way to assume power. They are mighty negotiators, often posing the situation in such a way that it becomes easier to agree with them than to stand one’s ground. Those born

on this cusp are professional and patient workers. Aries-Taurus love to spend money freely and they position themselves as head of the household so that they can control the wallet. Despite this drive for financial freedom, they have a tremendous desire to give up their work to pursue a leisurely existence. To soothe their cut-and-run urges, the Aries Taurus must calm their nerves with massages, sleep, and meditation. In relationships, the Aries-Taurus will be the one to choose who their friends and partners are, and once they have made a decision, there will be no further discussion. They rarely admit their mistakes, and will hold on to decaying relationships rather than admitting failure.

TAURUS April 25th-May 18th Taurus , an earth sign, is the second sign of zodiac. Unlike the

fiery Aries who focuses their energies on the act, the game, or the process, they love the spoils of war and the rewards they reap from their effort. Taurus’ love to indulge themselves, and will surround themselves with beauty in their homes and in their study of culture. They are a rather artistic group, and persistent workers. It is their stubbornness that lends to their persistent approach to tasks, and because of this dedication to their work they are highly reliable workers. Taurus’ are a down to earth group, who value harmony in their lives. In love, they make committed, loving mates. The first phase of Taurus, or Taurus I, takes place between April 25 and May 2. This is the ‘Week of Manifestation.’ Taurus Is posses a great motivation for success, even to the degree of being stubborn. They are great facilitators; almost as though their purpose on earth is to put ideas into action. Creating something from nothing may include building a family or household, or perhaps a business venture. Taurus Is are also curious about the way things work, they love to take devices apart to see how they function, and reassemble them, once again. Slow to change, a Taurus I may feel the need to understand how certain changes may benefit their own personal goals before they are willing to drink the proverbial cool-aid. In the workplace, the Taurus I can be a fantastic boss, as they are highly attentive to the needs of their employees. To the Taurus I, one of the most important aspects of a good work environment, is functioning as a team. Having a very physical and sensual nature, these individuals love to indulge themselves, whether their vice is food, sex, comfort, or recreation. Getting close to a Taurus I may be as easy as joining them in their daily routine, this will help build a trusting bond in which they feel capable of sharing. In their personal relationships, Taurus Is do not respond to confrontations. Appealing to their sensitivity may be the best way to win them over. As natural procrastinators, they may neglect certain chores or even relationships out of their desire for unchanging smooth sailing in their daily life. The Taurus II phase occurs between May 3rd and May 10th. This is the ‘Week of the Teacher,’ and those born during this week exhibit a pattern of imparting their opinions and knowledge upon those around

them. When enrolled as students, they are dedicated to their education. They often require a teacher-student relationship in their lives, whether they are the master or pupil. Taurus IIs are fixated on the cultures and daily activities of those who are far different from them. It is not uncommon to see interracial relationships as well as couples of drastic age differences. Taurus IIs demand justice for themselves and those around them, and may be quick to anger with those who do not share their altruistic views. They are very to-the-point with others, and they may hurt and offend more sensitive people. While their habit of teaching may attract many followers, the Taurus II will not tolerate being doted upon, and when they are paid too much attention, they may withdraw. In love, the Taurus II may keep their distance, but this does not mean they are not devoted partners. Their lack of fiery passion should not be interpreted as emotional separation, rather a more rational or ‘real world’ view of love. The third week of Taurus, Taurus III, is the ‘Week of the Natural.’ This phase occurs between May 11th and May 18th. Taurus IIIs are free spirited by nature and they need to be allowed to run wild. When their freedom is restricted, it can result in psychological issues including nervousness and even depression. Their soft and sensitive side may feel trampled when their wild side is stifled. As they mature, they will only surround themselves with people who understand and appreciate their dynamic personalities, but they still bear the scars from lessons learned in childhood. As adults, Taurus IIIs are fascinated by abnormal and strange ways of life. They hold on to relationships with much more steady individuals to keep themselves grounded. Remarkably , the impulsive Taurus III is not prone to addiction. They seem to have an understanding of the darker sides of life and may dabble in drugs, but they are usually able to resist their urges should an addiction threaten to interfere with their lives. Among personal relationships, Taurus IIIs may come to resent their mates, as they might begin to view their committed partner as a threat to their freedom. Success in relationships comes from understanding the complex thoughts of the Taurus III.

TAURUS-GEMINI CUSP May 19th-May 24th

The Taurus-Gemini Cusp occurs May 19th through May 24th. This week is ‘The Cusp of Energy.’ Energy is exactly what the Taurus-Gemini has in abundance. They are always seeking new groups in which to participate as well as projects on which to focus their attention. With so many options, the Taurus-Gemini has a predisposition to spread themselves too thin. They have a great interest in themselves, and must remember to also take a sincere interest in their personal relationships in order to create a balanced give-and-take. Despite having any desire to involve themselves in mundane,

routine activities, they must make an effort to share household responsibilities with their partners instead of venturing out to find the latest activity. Taurus-Gemini’s often worry themselves about whether things are in proper working order, including their own bodies; they are a group of hypochondriacs. A good mate for the Taurus-Gemini will maintain their own identity and boundaries while sharing a respect and appreciation for the Taurus-Gemini. They make great parents, as they can impart a variety of knowledge on their offspring.

Their moods may change within seconds, and when they are crossed, they can be explosive. The first phase of Gemini, Gemini I, takes place from May 25th through June 2nd.
