Celebrating Five Decades of Photography
19 December 2024 - 12 January 2025
The Muse Gallery
“Past and Present” is a profound reflection on five decades of Phillips’ work, merging iconic moments from the past with contemporary portraits of British artists and community members. The exhibition also features recently discovered photographs from Italy during the Dolce Vita era, offering a unique glimpse into a vibrant cultural landscape.
Ronald “Charlie” Phillips, born on November 22, 1944, in Jamaica, is celebrated not only as a restaurateur but also as a pivotal documenter of Black London. Best known for his evocative images of Notting Hill during the West Indian migration, Phillips’ extensive portfolio includes captivating photographs of film stars and student protests. His work has been featured in prestigious publications such as Stern, Harper’s Bazaar, Life, andVogue, as well as in various Italian and Swiss journals.
Recent publications, including “How Great Thou Art,” have highlighted Phillips’ sensitive portrayal of the social and emotional traditions surrounding death in London’s African Caribbean community.
Join us at The Muse Gallery to experience the rich tapestry of history and artistry that “Past and Present” encapsulates. This exhibition is not just a celebration of Phillips’ illustrious career; it is an invitation to reflect on the evolving narrative of our communities through the lens of one of the most influential photographers of our time.
