verywhere I look, I see the signs that the silly season has truly begun. This is the time when I usually escape the craziness and head to the Winelands for some much-needed downtime. Boschendal Farm’s bakery, bistro and farm shop in Stellenbosch, called Boschendal at Oude Bank, is the perfect way to do just that. Boschendal at Oude Bank brings the best of the farm’s ethically produced foods to the heart of Stellenbosch. Visitors can also enjoy a free tasting of a selected wine of the week from various wine producers, including Boschendal Farm’s delicious wines. We’d like one reader to experience it for themselves.
win One lucky Neighbourhood reader stands a chance to win a Boschendal at Oude Bank Farm-to-Table experience for two, including main meals and a beverage for each person or a bottle of wine to share. Visit the Neighbourhood Facebook page (facebook.com/ YourNeighbourhoodZA) to find out how to enter.

ith so many eateries competing for the breakfast, lunch and after-work trade, the CBD can be a testing place to open a new restaurant. We chat with three restaurant owners who first built their brand and following in one of Cape Town’s suburbs and then opened a second branch in the CBD.
Jarryds
Jarryds in Sea Point is known for creative all-day breakfasts, quality local ingredients and excellent coffee. Owner Jarryd Segal says there are many positives to opening in a residential area. “You can trade seven days a week. In the off season, we have local support and customers are less time-sensitive, so there’s a smoother flow.” Classics such as eggs Benedict, omelettes, sandwiches and the quirky toast bar are popular at the new Church Street branch. “We have refined our offering for the CBD, making it more approachable and slightly faster, with some simpler takeaway items to keep up with the CBD hustle and bustle. The clientele is fantastic and we really enjoy the environment.”

2014 for its New York-style breakfasts and luscious smoked salmon bagels, Kleinsky’s recently opened its second branch at The Piazza on Church Square. “So many fans of our Sea Point branch were begging us to open up in town and we love the energy in the CBD,” says owner Adam Klein. “A lot of the clients here have never heard of us before, so it’s like starting all over again, which is exciting and fun. There’s definitely a lot more of a takeaway aspect in the CBD, with many people only having limited time for lunch, so we’re focusing on being as efficient as possible.”
Banks Burger
This friendly Newlands burger joint prides itself on making everything fresh in-house, from pasture-raised beef patties to tomato sauce and burger buns. “We were always interested in opening another location and when the right site came up in town we decided to take our chance,” says owner Murray Beattie. The offering for the new CBD branch on Loop Street is the same as Newlands so that customers can have a familiar experience. “It’s been great. We haven’t noticed much of a difference in terms of clientele or trade. I think the markets are very similar.”

Looking for something different to sip on this summer? While Riesling plantings remain tiny in the Cape Winelands, this aromatic grape punches above its weight in the glass WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

hile Chenin Blanc remains, arguably, the most exciting cultivar in the Cape Winelands at the moment, it’s not the only white wine worth stocking up on this summer. If you’re looking for a wine that will pair with everything from summer sushi to Asian-style chicken, it’s time to take a look at Riesling. The signature cultivar of Germany’s Rhine Valley vineyards, Riesling is an exceptionally aromatic wine that all but leaps out of the glass. Don’t be surprised if you sniff a little petroleum or waxiness there too; it’s an unusual character common to many Rieslings. Alongside a bright and fruity perfume on the nose, Rieslings are complex on the palate, making them an ideal wine for pairing with a meal. If you’re planning a summer lunch, leave the Sauvvie in the cupboard and pop one of these superb local examples in the ice bucket instead.
Groote Post Riesling
At less than 12% alcohol, this fragrant offering from the West Coast is ideal for summertime sipping. Expect heady notes of rose petal and pineapple on the nose, with a spicy and complex palate. It leans towards a sweeter style of Riesling, so it’s a good introduction for those new to the cultivar.
Hartenberg Riesling
This Stellenbosch estate has been making Riesling for more than three decades and this wine shows precisely why Hartenberg is famous for its “dry” – what the Germans would label trocken – style of winemaking. This Riesling is a great match for dishes with a bit of spice, while the lively acidity will allow the wine to mature beautifully for up to six years after vintage. For something with a touch more sweetness, Hartenberg’s “Occasional Riesling” is equally good.
Paul Cluver “Close Encounter” Riesling
This popular Elgin estate has the largest Riesling plantings of any local wine farm, with the oldest vines dating back 30 years. Winemaker Andries Burger makes three styles of Riesling on the estate, including a “Dry Encounter” and a Noble Late Harvest dessert wine. Riper and sweeter in character, Close Encounter delivers a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity with notes of lime, lemongrass and pineapple.
Good food & heritage Devil’s Peak Brewing Company pours new life into De Oude Welgemoed WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

I
f ever there was a hidden gem it’s Devil’s Peak De Oude. It’s easy to miss the historic manor house cloaked in old oak trees above the Bellville Golf Club, the entrance tucked away behind the local karate and squash clubs. But once you’re through the gates, it’s another world – rope swings hang from sturdy oak branches and a sheltered terrace overlooks green lawns. The heritage buildings offer a choice of dining venues, from a bistro with wood-fired pizzas to a beer hall with 12 taps and bar snacks, coffee and pastries in the deli, and a full restaurant menu in the manor itself that’s strong on wood-fired cooking.
HARTENBERG WINE ESTATE
Husband and wife team chefs Jacques and Michelle Fourie are fresh from the success of their London wood-fired eatery, Ember Yard, which brought traditional charcoal cooking methods from Spain and Italy to the heart of Soho. “Everything was touched by smoke, slow cooking with a custom grill, and that’s the inspiration for the style of food we’re doing here,” says Jacques. They fire up the hot smoker every day, perhaps slow-cooking a whole pork shoulder, and the pork belly cooked this way is truly scrumptious,
the fat completely rendered leaving succulent and delicately flavoured meat, served with crispy crackling, butternut and beer-braised onions. It was peaceful and sunny on my visit, several tables taking advantage of the affordable weekday lunch special: a glass of Devil’s Peak brew with a towering burger, the patties a secret mix of three beef cuts that took a year to perfect; and on a less meaty note, the chive and pea risotto dotted with fresh goat curd tasted of spring with crunchy migas (a Spanish topping of breadcrumbs fried with garlic). Local families have already claimed De Oude as their weekend escape. The little ones can play on the open lawn in between bites of wood-fired pizza, burgers or fish and chips from the kids’ menu, while parents chat over a leisurely meal, with 18 craft beers on rotation and a wine list featuring small estates from the Durbanville and Swartland areas. Still to discover is the charm of morning coffee and breakfasts, or business lunches with peaceful green views. At any time of the day, you’ll find a comfortable niche and tasty local flavour on your plate and in your glass.

Home security An expert shares a few tips on how to keep your home secure while you’re away this holiday season WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK
W
hen it comes to home security, Brian Jackson, operations director, Blue Security, suggests we think differently. “Your home security is often only as strong as its weakest link. Patrol your entire property for gaps or faults which make it vulnerable and fill them in. Inspect fences, walls and gates for any evidence of damage or tampering that could allow intruders access. If you have an electric fence, cut back overhanging trees that could soon touch the fence and set off a false alarm. Trim overgrown bushes which provide potential hiding places for intruders.”
Security maintenance
Brian emphasises the importance of well-maintained windows, burglar bars and security gates. “Ensure putty and screws aren’t loose, and that there are no rusted or damaged bars that need replacing. Attend to any repairs. Rather spend a little now to conduct a small repair than risk making it easier for potential burglars.” An anti-gatecrashing kit has become an essential part of any home security system and sounds an alarm if intruders tamper with the gate.
Smart technology
“One of the greatest advantages homeowners now have is to turn an ordinary home into a smart home.
Apart from being able to control electronics such as your TV, lights and air-conditioning via your home alarm system, from a security perspective, you can remotely monitor and control access to your home via your smartphone. So while you’re on holiday you can still remotely control your alarm system,” says Brian.
on of lights at night so that you don’t have to leave them on all day. If you don’t have a smart alarm system, ask a neighbour to switch on a few lights inside and outside and put on the TV in the evenings. Make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked, especially those in bathrooms and children’s bedrooms, before you leave.
The price of smart technology has become a lot more affordable in recent years. This has made it possible to open the gates and front door to your home to provide access to your staff no matter where you are in the world. If you have a smart home alarm system connected to CCTV cameras, you can receive real-time photographic and video footage directly to your smartphone if an intruder enters the property and activates the alarm. If it’s a cat or other false alarm, you can instantly deactivate the system, or a particular zone, using your phone.
“Home security is about fitting the correct alarm system for your needs, maintaining it and living a security-conscious lifestyle in close communication with your security service provider,” says Brian. It’s also a good idea to connect with your neighbours and use a range of options like WhatsApp groups and key swaps to look out for each other.
Lighting and presence
Burglars do not favour breaking into a well-lit property, so ensure there’s sufficient outdoor lighting that switches on at night either via your smart home alarm system or motion sensors. Use your smart alarm system to create the appearance that someone is home. Schedule the opening and closing of your window blinds and switching
TOP TIP: • Arrange for a neighbour to collect any mail/newspapers, as nothing shouts “empty house” louder than an overflowing mailbox. • Ask your neighbour to keep an eye on your property while you’re away. You could also offer your driveway as extra parking for your neighbour’s visitors to create the impression that someone is home.

My business neighbourhood ClipinHair has a new base in Tygervalley WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGES: SUPPLIED
E
ntrepreneur and businesswoman, Jeanne Pienaar, saw that South Africa was lagging behind the US when it came to advanced hair extensions. She sourced the best quality she could find and developed South Africa’s first clip-in hair extensions business under the name ClipinHair. She tells us more about her new premises in Tygervalley. Q: How did your business start? A: I’d always wanted to be an entrepreneur, but started off studying marketing at UCT and law at Stellenbosch. I then became an attorney, notary and conveyancer. While talking to a
friend in 2015, we got onto the subject of hair extensions. After seeing the high number of views on YouTube videos showing how to clip in hair extensions, I realised that there was a huge gap in the market here for an advanced and top-quality product. The videos I saw were from 10 years ago, so the time was right for clip-in extensions to go mainstream in South Africa. I travelled abroad to see different suppliers and visited a few factories, after which I decided who I’d like to work with. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: I recently relocated to Highstreet shopping mall in Tygervalley, Bellville, as it’s halfway between where my team and I stay. Another consideration was that the rent was much cheaper than what I was paying at our previous base in Roeland Square in central Cape Town. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was aware of empty spaces in the mall, so I emailed the letting agent and asked them about immediate availability. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he premises are closer to where I stay and cheaper than Cape Town’s rent, which works well for me as I have to use a lot of the space for storage of stock. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A baby shop and a chiropractor.
Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: I pay R190/m². In Tygervalley shopping mall, I used to rent for nearly R1,000/m². In Roeland Street, I used to pay R215/m². Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: On average, about 20 to 25 people per week, depending on the season. We’re an e-commerce-based business, so the shop is more of an office and depot than a primary retail outlet, but we do offer free demos and colour matches in store by appointment and then clients can purchase directly in store. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I would like to open another shop in Hyde Park Corner shopping mall in Johannesburg as soon as there is space available. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, 90% of our sales are done online. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Dark brown clip-in hair extensions. All our hair extensions clip in easily with no damage to your own hair and look incredibly natural adding length and volume.

Woodstock
Music producer, DJ, radio host and record label owner, Das Kapital, tells us about his neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED & NAZREEN ESSACK
My part of Woodstock is peaceful and friendly, with enough hum and energy during the day to keep me inspired DAS KAPITAL
ABOUT DAS KAPITAL:
THINGS TO DO: • Visit The Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill on Saturdays. • Taste craft beers at the Devil’s Peak Brewing Company, the Woodstock Brewery or the Brewers Co-op. • Play Hint Hunt at The Old Biscuit Mill. • Explore shops with vintage items, antiques and secondhand goods along Albert and Roodebloem roads. • Wander on foot and discover local artisans and graffiti artists, design studios and corner shops.
W
ith his own record label, Do Work Records, and a national radio show on 5FM, In Das We Trust, 26-year-old Das Kapital is one of South Africa’s most influential artists on the electronic dance music scene and a sought-after performer at many national and international festivals. A Cape Town native, he’s lived in Woodstock for the last two years and loves the energy of the area. “The area I live in feels very suburban and calm while still being close enough to town to know I’m a quick drive away from anything I want to do,” he says. “My part of Woodstock is peaceful, friendly and doesn’t ask much of you. The community here is
A big name in South African dance music, Das Kapital also headlines at international festivals. As a music producer, DJ and recording artist, he’s known for his technical ability crossing a number of genres. His record label, Do Work Records, brings new generations of artists to the music scene, as does his radio show, In Das We Trust.
Walking around Woodstock is one of his favourite things to do. “There are so many amazing places here. It would be remiss to simply rely on the touristy staples like The Old Biscuit Mill. I think Woodstock is one of those places you should make a full day of to find all the wonderful corner cafes, restaurants and so on. The Woodstock Exchange is great for pretty much any speciality goods you could ever need. Otherwise, I’m on my porch enjoying the sunshine or in my house making music.”
He says an ideal weekend at home would be spent at a relaxed pace. “I’d wake up, head to the market in the morning, grab a coffee, walk around the stores along Albert Road for antiques and oddities, walk home in the sunshine and stop at my local corner store for a samosa. Then I’d head home for a relaxing time on the couch, enjoying all the wonderful ambient warmth and the hum of the suburb.” Although Das Kapital sees both sides of the gentrification argument, he loves Woodstock as it is. “Where I live, I’m part of a welcoming and equal community of mixed faiths and diverse backgrounds. Few places in Cape Town can really offer that, and I love my area for that,” he says.
WHY WE LOVE THE WOODSTOCK EXCHANGE: WEX, as it’s affectionately known, is more than a shopping centre, it’s also home to a host of creatives, artisans and cutting-edge businesses in the offices and co-working spaces upstairs. Their infectious energy spills onto the retail and food scene on the ground floor where you’ll find forward-thinking fashion brands such as Grandt Mason, Ballo, Kingdom, Chapel, and Project Dyad, and local furniture designers Saks Corner, Elevenpast, Pedersen and Lennard, and FatSak. Honest Chocolate, Rosetta Roastery and Ocean Jewels are essential artisan food stops. Superette, Field Office, and Starling and Hero Bicycle Cafe add another dimension to the vibey cafe culture.
DINE OUT: • The Kitchen: for deli lunches • Cinta Cafe: for a laid-back market vibe • Hidden Leaf: for fresh organic fare and great balcony views • Babbos: for wood-fired pizza and simple Italian cuisine • Ocean Jewels: for fresh seafood

Buyers can make offers online 24/7 and see all other offers. Notifications of other offers as they're made, so you can adjust if you wish.
"There was no second-guessing if I'd made the right offer: it was all totally transparent."
We assist you throughout the buying and selling process - in fact, you don't have to do anything, we'll do it all for you - but we believe when you buy or sell your home, your investment shouldn't be diluted by commission. That's why we only charge a single transaction fee: R29,500, on successful sale. For more unique features for both sellers and buyers, visit Eazi.com.
