intswalo Atlantic, located within the Table Mountain National Park, is offering all their South African visitors a winter warmer package – a night’s stay for two people in one of their sea-facing king units, as well as a light lunch on arrival with a welcome bottle of wine, and a full breakfast, at R7,060 (running until 31 August). Located at the foot of Chapman’s Peak perched on a pebble beach, Tintswalo Atlantic’s hideaway location makes it the perfect romantic getaway for winter days, so when we were invited to enjoy the all-enveloping comforts of one of Cape Town’s best-kept secrets, we knew we were in for a unique winter experience. It seems appropriate that one of the world’s most scenic drives, Chapman’s Peak Drive, is what will take you to this secluded slice of heaven. As you reach the turnoff just before the tollgate, you’ll park your car so that a shuttle can take you down to the five-star boutique lodge towards the ocean, adding to that remote feeling, even though you can see Hout Bay a short distance away. Once you arrive, that’s when the real magic happens. You’re greeted by the sound of waves breaking on the rocks practically right at your feet and you’ll take in the panoramic view across the Atlantic Ocean towards Hout Bay and the Sentinel Mountain range.

fresh, locally-sourced and sustainable ingredients. The menu changes with the season and the availability of ingredients.
Though dinner isn’t included in the winter package, it’s well worth stopping by the restaurant before you retire to your bedroom to fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean. The restaurant, under the guidance of executive chef Guy Clark, is all about creating memorable meals using
Highlights from the five-course dinner included the starter of braised springbok with pine-ring mushroom, poached leeks and a butternut puree, and the main course of chimichurri bone marrow and beef fillet served with potato done two ways, smoked broccolini and shitake mushrooms. Each course has a vegetarian option ensuring everyone is taken care of,
and the kitchen is always happy to take in any other dietary requirements. The full breakfast the next morning is a leisurely affair as you tuck into the three courses, sipping on coffee and bubblies while taking in the dramatic scenery. A stay at Tintswalo Atlantic is all about moving into a lower gear and taking things easy. It’s truly a location like no other and allows you the space and calm to really feel rejuvenated away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Classic comfort food Simple and delicious bistro fare at The Shop in Sea Point WORDS & IMAGES: KIT HEATHCOCK
T
aking over such a Cape Town icon as the Buzbey Grill in Sea Point can’t have been easy, but chefs Gabi and Kyle Knight have emerged from the transition period smiling and have evolved a fresh new identity as The Shop. Continuing the tradition of a friendly owner-cheffed local eatery, The Shop embraces a contemporary ethos of responsibly-sourced ingredients, a frequently changing menu and everyday food cooked with love. It’s already attracting a new following as well as
winning over many of the old regulars. “It’s simple, honest, fuss-free food,” says Kyle. “It’s just Gabi and me in the kitchen, we play around with flavours and change the menu as we go.” There’s an old-school French bistro feel to the interior, with only minor decor changes since Buzbey Grill days, but the chalkboard specials attest to the new energy: encompassing Jerusalem artichokes, butternut soup, springbok shank with mash, and carpenter (sustainable fish comes directly from the fishermen through the Abalobi programme). Calamari and steak and chips still feature on the menu, but now the meat is free range and grass fed – Kyle and Gabi feeling strongly about quality and provenance. Our starter of grilled Jerusalem artichokes was meltingly tender, lifted by the piquancy of fried capers and a lightly acidic buttermilk and brown butter dressing. Next, beautifully light potato gnocchi revelled in a lively tomato and rosemary sauce, with mushroom chunks and crunchy fresh corn for textural contrast. A glorious bouillabaisse was done the traditional way with reduced fish stock, the thick soup tasting of the ocean, with generous chunks of carpenter and calamari. This definitely was one to go back for often, a generous bowl would make a wonderful winter mid-week supper on its own. The chicken schnitzel was another easy weeknight staple with mustard sauce and tiny crunchy brussels sprouts that completely changed our perception of this much-maligned vegetable. Gabi’s desserts are homely comfort food at its best. We dug happily into the deep dark chocolate pot with condensed milk ice cream and tasted the retro rum and raisin parfait, both unpretentious and wonderfully indulgent. Open evenings only for the winter months, The Shop is the perfect place for a heart-warming meal on a cold winter’s night.
Old vines, great wines? A new certification allows wine-lovers to lend a hand in conserving South Africa’s vineyard heritage WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
S
ince the formal launch of the Old Vine Project (OVP) in 2016, wine lovers both in South Africa and abroad have increasingly been able to tap into the intrigue and complexity of wines made from some of the country’s historic vineyards. With a mandate to catalogue the vineyards, and promote the wines made from South Africa’s oldest vines, the OVP has so far catalogued more than 2,600ha of vines older than 35 years, the minimum age for “old vines” in South Africa. And from Eben Sadie’s Mev. Kirsten to David Finlayson’s Camino Africana, unique patches of mature vineyard have certainly turned out some memorable wines. But it’s not always easy to know which wines come from old vines and, by buying them, how to actively ensure those roots stay in the ground. That problem has been solved with the OVP’s new Certified Heritage Vineyards seal, a world-first classification for old vines. The seal may only be applied to bottles of wine made from vineyards 35 years or older and includes the planting date of the vines.
“We’ve seen a huge increase in awareness of old vines as a category, and the Heritage seal is an easy way for consumers to access these wines,” explains Andre Morgenthal from the OVP. “It’s also a guarantee that they are drinking a wine made from heritage vines, and that our vineyard heritage is protected.” “We also believe that the renewed focus on the quality that old vines in South Africa can give, will help to raise the price of grapes in our country,” adds Rosa Kruger, the acclaimed viticulturist who founded the OVP and has been researching old vines since 2003. Critics of the project have argued that old vines don’t always equate to good wine, but with many of the country’s top winemakers supporting the Old Vine Project – the likes of Eben Sadie, Chris Alheit, Andrea Mullineux and more – there’s no shortage of talent turning tapping into the fruits of older vines. Are they any good? With the new Heritage seal, half the fun will be finding out.

My business neighbourhood A small craft distillery, Pienaar & Son are creating quality modern spirits in the East City WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
T
for a living, so starting a microdistillery was just a no-brainer. We appreciate traditional methods and the history of distillation but aim to find fresh ways of crafting spirits with a modern twist. We believe in starting traditions, not following them. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I didn’t want to just be another interesting company stationed out in Woodstock or Salt River and really wanted to start a true inner-city distillery. The East City also has recently been developing really fast and it’s an exciting neighbourhood to be part of.
he dynamic father-and-son team behind Pienaar & Son blend 40 years of distilling technology experience with a 20-something master distiller who is determined to find fresh ways of combining science and art in distilling their gin and vodka. Andre Pienaar tells us more about starting the business with his father in a hidden cul-de-sac off Roeland Street in the East City.
Q: How did you find your premises? A: Good old Gumtree.
Q: How did your business start? A: A bout five years ago, I bought a tiny still online as I thought it would be fun to make gin and whiskey at home. I quickly realised that it spoke to me more than anything else I had done as a career before. I have a degree in chemistry and biochemistry and my father is a chemical engineer who builds stills
Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My landlord actually lives right next door. Then we’re sandwiched between Childline, some architects and a block of flats (Temple House).
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he main thing with a distillery is that it needs the correct zoning to obtain a liquor licence. The fact that our premises have MU2 zoning allows us to distil on site, and its proximity to the centre of the city is amazing.
Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Like most of Cape Town, they’re not low. But it is all comparative.
It’s cheaper than Bree Street but considerably more than Woodstock. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: T he distillery is in a small cul-desac just off of Roeland Street so we don’t have any random foot traffic coming past. All our customers have specifically come through to see us. We’re only really open to the public on Saturdays between 10am and 2pm. That being said, I would estimate we see about 40 customers per week. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We can’t really expand from our current premises. If we were to outgrow it we would either have to move or open a second location. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, you can buy our gin and vodka from our website and get it delivered countrywide. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our two gins sell pretty evenly. The Empire (a cucumber and citrus infusion) and the Orient (fresh citrus and Eastern spices).

The hearth of the home What type of fireplace works in your home? WORDS: NICOLA JENVEY
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
E
ver since man harnessed the power of fire, the concept of a fireplace as a central feature in a home has been vigorously pursued. Today the appeal comes in its heating properties rather than the kitchen hearth. Typically, today’s most popular fireplaces are the traditional brick and mortar design, gas, cast iron or electric ones. Each option has its merits, providing a unique experience within home decor and its performance in line with what homeowners seek from their hearths. Obviously, the home’s style plays a significant role in dictating an appropriate fireplace.
Traditional bricks and mortar
Traditional fireplaces offer homes with a decorative focal point and can become a selling point for buyers seeking out a touch of a gentler era amid the helter-skelter of fastpaced modern living. They are also energy efficient and sustainable as they consume dry wood rather than electricity and, in leafy neighbourhoods where trees are regularly trimmed, the cut wood is often left on verges for consumption as firewood.
American Speakers Sunday Times Neighbourhood Ad 27 June 2018 curves.indd 1
However, the disadvantages of traditional wood-burning fireplaces are the high maintenance levels required in cleaning the grate and sweeping the chimney; the requirement for storage space for the logs and the extra vigilance when living with an open flame and hearth. An alternative that still provides the beauty of woodburning, is enclosed fireplaces. Calore CEO Paolo Carlone says the sunlight feeding trees effectively creates the world’s oldest solar batteries in the form of biomass, and biomass energy can be released by incinerating plant material. However, unlike burning fossil fuels, biomass is renewable within human time – decades or centuries – while fossil fuels require millennia to rejuvenate. He says the popularity in the eco-conscious European market has seen a shift towards biomass pellet stoves and manufacturers have the responsibility to change consumer behaviour by offering greener energy alternatives.
Gas and electric fireplaces These fireplaces warm up a room as swiftly as flicking the switch. Gas fireplaces typically burn more
cleanly and create more heat at a lower cost. Like electric fireplaces, they’re much easier to install. Electric fireplaces don’t generate the same heat strength as traditional or gas fireplaces, but are eco-friendly and energy efficient since they don’t emit any fumes. They also don’t require installing chimneys or ventilation systems and are ideal for tenants unwilling to invest in infrastructure to a home they don’t own.
Stainless-steel and cast-iron fireplaces
Cast-iron fireplaces – or potbelly stoves – are the answer to heating up smaller homes as their design traverses every shape and size and they can be placed virtually anywhere provided there’s the required ventilation to a chimney or directly outside. Hydrofire owner Kristo Nikolov says stainless-steel options offer a sleek, modern look and better shaping in design. “In contrast, many cast-iron models have an old-fashioned charm and is an especially suitable material for fireplaces because it retains the heat longer than traditional fireplaces and emits a steady warmth long after the fire has died,” he says.

he historic and picturesque oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch might be steeped in tradition but this thriving Winelands town looks to the future as well as preserving the past. “There’s never a dull moment in Stellenbosch. As a university town, there is a tangible, youthful energy and constant innovation,” says Hanli Fourie, founder, Bites and Sites food tours. “The artisan food and drink scene has just exploded over the last eight-odd years and many young or young-at-heart entrepreneurs have turned Stellenbosch into a thriving foodie destination.” This dynamic energy extends beyond the tourist industry, as Stellenbosch is attracting businesses from a variety of sectors. “The amount of innovative new tech businesses has increased dramatically in the last three years,” says Brandon Paschal of LaunchLab, “which makes the town very exciting.”

retirees, and families moving here for the excellent schooling. Family homes in central Stellenbosch and in nearby Krigeville and Die Boord are ideal for those with children at the high schools who can then walk to school, without having to deal with rush-hour traffic. The quiet older suburbs of Rozendal and Karindal on the eastern edge of town make it easy to escape into nature in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. Others choose the peace, security and mountain views of the various new golf and luxury lifestyle estates popping up just outside the town.
Schooling Stellenbosch’s prestigious public schools pre-date the university (officially founded in 1918) and their long history of academic excellence continues to this day with all three regularly ranking among the top20 high schools in the province.
The beautiful setting of Stellenbosch among wine estates and mountains, attracts more and more residents from all over South Africa for its open-air lifestyle. “The influx from Gauteng is real,” says Brandon. “Most of the people we meet, have moved here in the last five years or so.”

Explore The open-air lifestyle is one of the biggest attractions of life in Stellenbosch, being able to hike, mountain bike or trail run in the unspoilt mountains within ten minutes of home. The Jonkershoek Nature Reserve up a winding valley behind the town, is a favourite hiking destination, but there are trails even closer to town starting behind the university’s Coetzenburg Stadium. The weekend parkruns at Root 44 and in Kayamandi are another popular way of getting active, or relax the weekend away browsing market stalls at Root 44, Blaauwklippen and the Slow Food market at Oude Libertas. There are so many excellent wine estates to visit it would take years to get to them all and the same for the gourmet restaurants which make the Winelands such a foodie destination. The Summer Soirees monthly pop-up food and wine fairs on Drostdy Street are not to be missed for a snapshot tasting of some of these riches, but there are fab food finds all year round in town too. “I recommend taking a stroll through the historic heart of town on a culinary treasure hunt,” says Hanli. “Church, Plein, Dorp, Andringa and Ryneveld streets cover a small area with many culinary delights.”

Local property experts gives us the inside scoop on Stellenbosch
Chris Cilliers
Who is buying property in Stellenbosch?
SHOP:
We have a wide selection of buyers currently. There are still a lot of purchasers from Gauteng who are attracted to the good schools, the university and a more relaxed lifestyle, as well as local buyers looking to either upgrade or downsize. There’s also a high demand for retirement accommodation with buyers often looking nearby at Somerset West or the recently released Val de Vie Evergreen in Paarl. Stellenbosch is always a popular market for investors with plenty of student accommodation on offer.
• De Warenmarkt: for artisan market food stalls and casual eating • The picturesque streets around Church and Dorp streets: for boutiques, galleries and artisan stores • Eikestad Mall in the town centre: for everyday supplies • Ipic Shopping Centre in Die Boord: for easy grocery shopping at Spar • Stellenbosch Square outside town: for a small upmarket mall with Pick n Pay and Woolworths
Why should investors consider buying in Stellenbosch?
EAT:
DO:
• Jardine Restaurant: for excellent contemporary cuisine • Basic Bistro: for cosy bistro meals • Drum Restaurant: for friendly and elegant dinners • Meraki: for delightful breakfasts • Blue Crane and the Butterfly: for cakes, coffee and lunch • Schoon has just opened its “Manufactory” on Bird Street: for pioneering artisan breads and treats
• Go wine tasting on the Tuk Tuk. • Hike up to the waterfalls in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. • Outdoor concerts and theatre in the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre • Farmers’ markets on weekends: Root 44, Slow Market, Blaauwklippen • Botanical Gardens for picnics and gentle walks • Delvera Farm for full-moon hikes • Parkruns at Root 44 and Kayamandi
Excellent long-term growth potential keeps Stellenbosch properties popular. Strong demand and limited supply has ensured that property value has seen excellent appreciation, particularly over the medium to long term. There’s always a large influx of students to the area making a buy-to-rent property viable for investors. Important factors that buyers should consider when looking to purchase a student rental are, firstly, security and secondly, parking. Properties that offer both will secure a far higher rental income.

‘Golden Triangle’ of prime office space S
outh Africa’s prime office locations are linked by a golden triangle from Umhlanga/ La Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal across to Sandton’s CBD in Gauteng and down to the Western Cape’s Century City. The latest office market reports released by Broll Property Group, brings these three locations into sharp focus. Sandton continues to reflect positive, albeit slower, demand for prime office space. It’s becoming increasingly hard, however, for those seeking premium grade office space for their businesses to ignore the advantages offered in the Century City and Umhlanga/La Lucia nodes, comments Broll in its reports. Century City’s comprehensive perimeter security fencing, eco-friendly landscape, smooth integration into the Cape Town transport system, and a wide range of amenities, have secured the attention of large corporate tenants. This includes businesses in professional services, consulting, engineering,
HouseME Press Ad_189x265mm_R1_FA.indd 1
IT, marketing, financial services and the advertising and media sector. According to Broll’s Century City Office Market report, vacancies currently sit at 8%. By contrast, Umhlanga/ La Lucia has an average vacancy rate of 5%, with Sandton at 16%. The Umhlanga/La Lucia node presents a contrasting environment to both Century City and Sandton. There’s enormous development in Umhlanga Ridgeside, New Town Centre as well as in neighbouring Cornubia and the Sibaya Precinct to the north, all of which open fresh opportunities for tenants and landlords alike. Century City and Umhlanga/La Lucia are riding high as is evident in the high quality of new office space and associated amenities coming on line in these competing regions. However, Sandton’s over-supply and the resulting pressure on rentals have sparked an innovation trend, says Broll, with the addition of quality mixed-used projects.
SA’s prime residential prices down Research group New World Wealth published its quarterly residential update for South Africa. As part of the group’s research, it looks at the price of property per square metre in prime property areas across the country. It identified these three prime locations:

The Berg River Bridge opens at Val de Vie T
he Berg River Bridge at Val de Vie Estate in the Western Cape was officially opened by the executive mayor of the Drakenstein Municipality, councillor Conrad Poole, on Thursday, 21 June. Martin Venter, founder and CEO, Val de Vie Estate, said at the opening event, “Building a bridge is symbolic of human progress. We are proud today to open the Berg River Bridge
and believe that this addition to our estate is not only to the benefit of our residents, but in favour of our entire community.”
The Berg River Bridge, the first private bridge of this scale in South Africa, connects the estate with the R45 Simondium Road via the new Berg River gatehouse. This introduces a mere 30-minute travelling time to Cape Town
International Airport and Cape Town, 16 minutes to Stellenbosch and 3 minutes to Paarl Main Road. Poole expressed his gratitude towards Val de Vie Estate for investing in the infrastructure of the municipality and said, “Drakenstein Municipality is one of the fastest growing and financially sound municipalities in South Africa, and our valley is well on its way to becoming world class.”
