ast weekend was the official opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA). To celebrate, the museum offered free entry over Heritage Weekend, and people turned up in droves. Huge queues could be seen each day as eager visitors waited to see Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art. And they weren’t disappointed; the museum has stunning architecture and features an array of thought-provoking work from the biggest artists in South Africa and the entire continent. or the Italian wine industry, prosecco has been the sparkling success of the past decade, overtaking sales of champagne in many parts of the world, but the Italians have been slow to hitch their Alfa to the global thirst for craft gin. Expect that to change this summer, thanks to the arrival on local shelves of a pair of delicious Italian gins. The more interesting of the two is Biostilla Organic Gin. Aside from being one of the few Italian gins on the market, it’s also the first time a certified-organic premium gin has been available locally. “Italians have centuries of experiences in distillation,” says Giuliana Abrahamse, marketing and operations director, Profumi D’Italia Marketing (a local importer).

She tracked down Biostilla from a village in the Italian Alps. The region of South Tyrol has long been famous for eaux de vie fruit brandies, and the Walcher distillery has been in the family for nine generations. Thus gin seemed a natural progression for these master distillers. A base alcohol is created from organic wheat before being redistilled with selected botanicals from the surrounding hillsides. Wild juniper gives the gin a traditional flavour profile, while aromatics evoke a high Alpine meadow, with orris root, clary sage and elderflower. “In terms of flavour profile, the Biostilla Organic Gin is entirely unique,” says Giuliana. “With all the botanicals sourced from the Italian Alps, it’s a real taste of South Tyrol!”

Emma Hofmans, head chef, Hallelujah is heading up the new concept, which takes its inspiration from the prix fixe menus that you find in the small towns of France. “We’re very European, moving away from what we’re doing at Hallelujah. The whole concept of Sunnyside Inn is based on an old hotel. The food is what you’d get in an old-style hotel dining room, a prix fixe set menu, we’re playing with new flavours and making it a bit more modern. But still with the white tablecloths and the classic silver cutlery.”

P

restigious, historical and beautiful, Groot Constantia Wine Estate is a great source of pride among South Africans. Established in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, it’s the oldest wine estate in the country. For years, it’s been producing consistently excellent, award-winning wines. The estate sees thousands of visitors each year, intriguing them with its interesting history and attractive grounds, and satisfying them with incredible wines and two fantastic restaurants. Over the past year, Groot Constantia has seen a notable increase in visitors. In fact, the estate achieved the highest percentage growth of all attractions in Cape Town – an impressive accomplishment, which led to the launch of the Visitor’s Route experience in April this year. Jean Naudé, general manager, Groot Constantia, says, “The Visitor’s Route experience is the result of years of planning. Back in 2013, we identified the need to not only better manage the ever-growing visitor numbers, but also to enhance the Groot Constantia experience so that guests – both local and international – are allowed increased and more personalised interaction with the staff and offerings at the estate; they need to be able to truly feel Groot Constantia.”

I worked at Groot Constantia during the period between graduating and getting an internship, so I had the pleasure of regularly wandering the grounds, exploring the cellars and vineyards and occasionally visiting the Manor House. I didn’t think my fondness for the estate could grow much more, but when I was invited to the estate to check out the new Visitor’s Route, I was delighted. It’s a circular route focusing on the core of Groot Constantia’s history. It starts at the Manor House, Iziko’s cultural history museum, which provides you with an authentic look into the life of a prosperous Cape farmer in the 18th to late 19th century. The next stop is the Cloete Cellar, the original wine production cellar from 1791, which has stood somewhat empty and useless in recent years, but now houses the Wine Museum, full of fascinating information and artefacts, and a new, modern tasting room. From the Cloete Cellar, visitors can head over to the modern production cellar, which is the departure point for the self-guided audio tours of the cellar and vineyards. The Visitor’s Route allows guests to explore at their own pace, free to pick up some wine along the way, or stop off at one of the restaurants – it’s a lovely way to spend the day.

The beautiful old building with elegant wood staircase and wooden floors lends itself to the old hotel concept; the upstairs veranda that curves around the façade will be great for summer. We were warmed by a log fire on a wet spring First Thursday, watching the rain billow past the tall sash windows. Having a set menu makes life simple. There are always vegetarian alternatives and a choice of two mains, otherwise you just sit down,

unfold your linen napkin and relax as the shared serving plates arrive. When we visited there was a French feel to the menu, a bowl of mussels as the simple starter with a freshly baked baguette to soak up the gorgeous wine-soaked juices, and a savoury bagna cauda butter. The duck leg à la Clementine had a lovely hint of star anise, the skin crispy and rich in Cointreau and naartjie glaze. We also had the excellent vegetarian main, a classic red onion tarte tatin, along with a host of sides, including a bright and zesty beetroot and celeriac remoulade, creamy potato and parsnip mash, and a gingered roast pumpkin. A rich nougatine ice cream with pistachio caramel crisp and kumquat purée completed the meal. The menu changes every two weeks and takes inspiration from all over Europe, springbok wellington being a previous favourite. It’s still early days for the Sunnyside Inn, which is evolving as it goes, and there are plans to add an old-school bar on the top floor, which will serve a range of Italianinspired antipasti and flatbreads cooked in the woodfired oven.

A

nimated explainer videos unpack complex concepts in a fun, approachable way, bypassing jargon so that anyone can understand. Blink Tower, founded by Adrian Burger and Elodie Kleynhans, pioneered this growing medium in South Africa. Adrian tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: Blink Tower was formed in 2010 with a view of making video content tying into the soccer World Cup. When this flopped miserably, we realised our talent lay more specifically in the fields of education and animation, so a transition was made from a generalist video production company into South Africa’s first dedicated “explainer video” studio. Since then, we’ve made almost 200 videos for clients all around the world. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: The East City district is a central and funky part of town, surrounded by other cool creative agencies. Most of the team live in the City Bowl, so it’s really convenient – several of us walk, cycle or skate to work – and it was easier for our directors coming from the Southern Suburbs and Elgin, shaving off at least 15 minutes getting through the traffic. Traffic congestion has become an increasing problem in the city and so this informed our choice quite heavily. There are two parking bays and ample free street parking. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We searched on Gumtree and online, and found the premises via an estate agency.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The office layout is a perfect fit for a team of our size. We have a larger “Creative” room, where our writers, illustrators and animators

can let the creative juices flow and bounce ideas off one another, a meeting room in which we welcome potential clients and work out business strategies, and a quieter room where anyone can escape from the noise to knuckle down and focus if a deadline is looming. We also have a “let off steam” area with table tennis, a yoga mat and a pull-up bar, because that’s how we roll. We were able to decorate the office as we please, using several of the walls as chalkboards and whiteboards. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We have an architect on the right and a portable data management company on the left, plus we’re close to some incredible bakeries that feed our cake obsession. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: A nything from R10,000 and up per month for this size. Q: How many people go through your office each day? A: A s we’re primarily a digital company, our foot traffic is low – around one or two groups of potential clients per week. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: The space could easily be adapted to fit another three or four employees, so we’re very comfortable. Blink Tower thrives on being a small and agile team, so we don’t want to expand too quickly. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We primarily operate online. Q: What’s your most popular product? A: We create animated explainer videos, so a typical video is anything between 90 seconds and 2,5 minutes, explaining products and services so that anyone can understand.

Urban housing can help Cape Town’s congestion

W

ith Cape Town being the most congested city in the country, and Capetonians spending an average of 42 minutes each day in traffic, the City of Cape Town launched the “Drive Less, Live More” campaign earlier this year, with the aim of reducing congestion. While the City has proposed solutions like flexible working programmes, working remotely and carpooling to address the problem, there’s one avenue that was not explored: reasonably priced housing in well-located areas of the city. Over 30% of the Cape metropole’s entire labour force works in the Cape Town city centre, but

few are able to afford to live close to their place of employment. This means that thousands have to commute. However, Cape Town’s road infrastructure lacks the capacity to keep up with growing demand due to rapid urbanisation, resulting in heavy congestion and long travel times. These commutes have a negative impact on the environment, employee wellbeing as well as their productivity. While the City is making progress in providing housing in and near the city centre for those who earn less than R15,000 a month, the private property sector could be providing well-located urban homes for the middle-income market and, in doing so, help curb congestion.

The evolution of cities appears to have turned full circle, with the new age of cities looking surprisingly like the first. Global cities appear to be entering an age where the purpose of a successful city is to attract people, not traffic – to facilitate the flow of ideas, not just money, and to nurture human capital, not just financial capital.

Property market resilience

A

drastic slowdown in the property markets of smaller Mpumalanga towns, due to the closing of mines, outdated infrastructure and other factors, has fuelled the resilience of Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit). The town’s market, which is underpinned by the booming farming and forestry industries and regular international events, has held its own during the economic downswing. Eric Slabbert, principal and owner, Prime Platinum Property Mbombela, says that well-priced homes in the entry to mid-markets are still selling well, with a medium turnaround time of between three and five months while homes at the upper end of the market typically take between five and nine months to sell. “Our main challenge has been reaching a broader market and adequately showcasing properties to attract buyers

from other areas, especially now that more and more people are looking to move away from cities in search of a more tranquil lifestyle,” says Slabbert. To this end, Prime Platinum Property has embraced the latest digital technology which has been galvanising the real estate industry abroad and was recently introduced to the South African market. “With the 3-D clarity and detail of the augmented reality technology offered by the Propscan app, it will be much easier for potential buyers to effectively narrow their search or even choose a property,” says Slabbert. “In an increasingly competitive marketplace, and a world where consumers now expect instant access to concise information, it is essential to be able to efficiently showcase the options available to buyers, especially those who are not familiar with the area.”

Women’s Property Network

A

group of 50 leading women in the South African property industry gathered at Tongaat Hulett Developments in Umhlanga for another Women’s Property Network (WPN) networking session. “This was another incredibly productive WPN meet and greet for the KwaZulu-Natal chapter that has further strengthened the mutually beneficial relationship that exists between WPN and our generous hosts, Tongaat Hulett Developments,” said Sandi Mbutuma, chairperson, WPN. Since its inception in 2000, WPN has grown to include more than 400 members countrywide with chapters established in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Eastern and Western

Cape. Through networking events, such as these, WPN is able to fulfil its mandate of advancing the success of women in a male-dominated industry, acting as a catalyst for change. The organisation also offers a number of educational programmes promoting economic self-sufficiency as well as skills development, which is achieved through ongoing workshops and programmes. The WPN Educational Trust – a key focus for the organisation – was established for the awarding of bursaries to previously disadvantaged female students studying towards a propertyrelated degree or diploma. Since 2008, just under 70 bursaries have been awarded, 13 of which were awarded in 2017 totalling more than R800,000.

ike everything else, cheap paint will produce poor results. Quality paint requires fewer coats, lasts longer and is more resistant to dirt and mildew. Poorquality paint also has a negative impact on the environment. Stacy McArdle, Shave Paint and Decor, says a good-quality, durable paint is better for the environment. “The dilemma has always been, ‘Do I choose an eco-paint – a natural or organic paint that delivers on sustainability – or do I choose a traditional paint that delivers on performance?’ Environmental benefits no longer have to be chosen at the expense of performance when specifying paints. The Green Star rating tool from the Green Building Council of South Africa provides standards on volatile organic compounds in paint. Great strides have been made in the paint industry and brands now apply technologies across all or certain sectors of their ranges, or have created specific green ranges. Dulux has the Ecosure range; Dekade has EcoPrime, Gold Label Matt and Satin Gloss Non-Drip; and Plascon has the Breatheasy formulation.” Different brands have different names for various paint finishes and it can be confusing. But if you’re planning on a particular look, or

have a specific application, you need to understand the basics. Stacy talks more about the core finishes and explains where they should be used:

Matt

A water-based PVA paint, matt is normally used for walls, ceilings and sometimes furniture as the flatness of the paint means there’s no shiny reflection giving it a contemporary finish. Exterior matts are available with a smooth or rough texture. You need to ensure that the surface is primed with an undercoat and then apply using as many coats as necessary for even coverage.

Sheen

Sheen is more durable than matt. You should always check the exact finish because the degree of sheen varies between manufacturers. Sheen is most commonly used on interior wood surfaces as an alternative to gloss enamel. It can also be used on walls for a sheen finish.

Gloss

A hard-wearing finishing paint, gloss is used mainly on wooden and metal surfaces. Satin is used in the same way as gloss, but is slightly less shiny and is increasingly popular, especially for interior woodwork. Gloss is generally applied as a single coat over one or two coats of primer.

T

here are two sides to Camps Bay, both equally appealing. On the surface, it’s the glamorous haunt of jet-setters and A-list celebrities, the place for sundowners and peoplewatching at glitzy pavement cafes, with fashion shoots taking place on the palm tree-lined beach almost daily in summer. Dig a little deeper and you discover an enviable laid-back village community with excellent amenities, where kids can walk to school, residents can go surfing before and after work, and the beach is the local playground. “When I originally moved to Camps Bay, it was for the beach, the bars and the great nightlife,” says Tim Scudamore, co-owner, The Crazy Horse Gastro Pub Emporium. “Coming from London, it was unbelievable to me to have the beach right there and yet be only 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre. Now, as a married man with a family, what I love about Camps Bay is that it has a real sense of community, the local schools are fantastic and it feels safe and secure.” Despite being a mecca for summer visitors, Camps Bay is very much a village, with modern villas, apartment buildings and family homes climbing the mountainside above the beachfocused strip where there are more cafes and restaurants than shops. Residents tend to head to Sea Point,

the City Bowl or the V&A Waterfront for any serious shopping. They’re well served for everything else, from doctors and dentists to sports clubs, kids’ activities and even a theatre with worldclass productions in Theatre on the Bay.
