Marks & Spencer Burgundy Bourgogne Chardonnay 2014
“Chardonnay from Burgundy is the gold standard by which all Chardonnay is measured,” says Allan Mullins, Cape wine master and wine selector for Woolworths. “This unwooded example has lemon and lime flavours with riper notes of nectarine and peach, a succulent fruity palate and a long finish with ripe citrus notes.” Delicious on its own in the crisp winter sunshine, it’ll also pair nicely with lightly poached salmon in a beurre blanc sauce “or with freerange chicken breasts, grilled with lemon and herbs and served with asparagus”, suggests Mullins.
The Grier family of Villiera are well known in the Cape Winelands, famous for producing the delicious Tradition Brut Méthode Cap Classique as well as wonderful Chenin Blanc, Bordeaux blends and other bubblies. But did you know the family also has a property in France? In 2006 the Griers purchased 22ha of vineyards near the village of St Paul de Fenouillet in the Roussillon region of southern France. A short drive from the city of Perpignan, the vineyards here are famous for Syrah, Carignan and Grenache Noir. The Domaine Grier Odyssea showcases these classic local cultivars beautifully. Gently wooded, it’s full of fruit, spice and minerality and offers a wonderful introduction to this lesser-known corner of France.
Alain Graillot CrozesHermitage 2012
Over the last 30 years, Alain Graillot has become one of the most respected producers in the northern Rhône valley. This 100% Syrah from Graillot’s 18ha of vineyard between the Rhône and Isère Rivers, shows just why it’s worth the spend. The wine has “aromas of blackcurrant buds and vanilla, with remarkable freshness and refined tannins due to long oak ageing,” explains Mike Bampfield-Duggan of Wine Concepts in Newlands. Graillot farms his vineyards organically and all grapes are hand-harvested. Made in a classic Rhône style, the wine will age happily for the next five years. If you’re opening it for Bastille Day, give it a few hours in a decanter to open up.

South African artist and activist Lionel Davis, has a retrospective exhibition on at the National Gallery WORDS: MOLLY FITZ-PATRICK
IMAGE: NIGEL PAMPLIN
L
ionel Davis, or Uncle Lionel as he is affectionately known, is perhaps most recognised for being an anti-apartheid activist and, subsequently, a political prisoner on Robben Island. But, what many people don’t know, is that he is also a very accomplished artist. He only began pursuing art at the age of 41, which I found both admirable and encouraging. I attended the opening of his exhibition, Gathering Strands, at the South African National Gallery on 21 June, which happily coincided with Davis’s 81st birthday.
NOOP
Born and raised in District Six, Davis and his family were forced to move under the apartheid regime’s Group Areas Act when District Six was declared a “whites only” area. As a young man in this volatile sociopolitical climate, Davis started to attend political meetings and became an activist. His activism eventually led to his arrest. In 1964 he was sentenced to seven years on Robben Island, followed by five years of house arrest.

Noop
A beautiful Victorian building with outside seating front and back, Noop is perfect for a casual lunch or a celebration dinner. Owner and chef Zian Oosthuizen’s classical training comes through in the skilful execution of a varied menu, showcasing the best South African ingredients with either a French or an Asian twist. His panfried abalone with a gorgeous risotto and lemony beurre blanc is a winner, as were the beautifully seared tuna, and the tuna tartare. The crispy duck breast with a savoury orange sauce converted me to this much maligned classic and the rich slow-roasted lamb shoulder was a perfect winter warmer. A seriously encyclopaedic wine list includes the owner’s collection of rare bottles dating back to 1966.
Terra Mare
There’s an Alpine feel to the cosy interior at Terra Mare and its outside terrace looking up at Paarl Mountain, which makes sense when you discover
that the hospitable owner, Olivier Jaeggi, is Swiss. He and his Italian wife, Delenia, and South African chef, Thabo Nqadini, have created an old school menu that combines the best of all their backgrounds: delicious risottos, home-made pastas, quality South African steaks and seafood, tiramisu, crêpes suzette and malva pudding, varying the menu according to the seasons. The warm, friendly atmosphere and consistently excellent food have won them a loyal following, both of locals and regular international visitors.
His experiences under apartheid, his activism and subsequent imprisonment, appear in his artworks, but he only took his first formal art class in 1977 at the Community Arts Project. From then on Davis hasn’t stopped his art education, and completed his Bachelor of Arts in fine arts at Michaelis School of Art in 1994 at age 58. Despite a fine arts degree, he nevertheless continues to attend and be a part of numerous art classes, workshops and initiatives. Davis’s exhibition, Gathering Strands, is the culmination of decades of work,
Kikka
Bright, cheerful and quirky, Kikka is a local favourite for light lunches, gorgeous cakes, breakfasts both healthy and decadent, and drinks ranging from cappuccino to kombucha. The coffee shop stretches along a double shopfront of the historic Victorian Cross building, with raised booths in the windows, free Wi-Fi and outdoor seating on the stoep. Very much a family business for owners Karike and Abe Conradie, Kikka includes a busy protea-inspired florist, sells delightful gift hampers and Abe’s signature AB sauces, and bakes their own breads and cakes in-house – their layered carrot cake is a top-seller. A second, smaller Kikka opened at the Laborie Centre last year.
LIONEL DAVIS
education and experiences and is a celebration of his amazing life. You may think that Davis’s story itself must be the most remarkable thing about him, however, his artworks – their diversity, sensitivity, and soulfulness – is what will astonish you. The works in the exhibition span from the late 70s till now, and Davis does not confine himself to one medium – you will see everything from pencil sketches, watercolours, linocut prints, graphic posters, acrylic paintings, collages and sculptures. There’s no doubt that he is naturally gifted, but his continued artistic education and exploration is evident. He doesn’t shy away from expressing his raw emotions and conveys both his dark and joyful experiences and memories, as well as day-to-day scenes. Davis himself said that making art is not only revolutionary, but restorative too. While there are many artworks on display, in reality, you’re barely scratching the surface of Davis’s prolific creativity. Curators Amie Soudien, Ernestine White, Tina Smith and Ayesha Price, had a mammoth task on their hands, sorting through and arranging a lifetime of works that apparently were in every corner of Davis’s house. The result of weeks of work is an incredible and varied retrospective exhibition that will leave you feeling moved, inspired and happy. Gathering Strands will run until 1 October. The National Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Tickets are R30 for adults and R15 for students, and children aged 6 to 18 years, under 5s enter for free.

My business neighbourhood A botanical florist specialising in hanging gardens comes to the Silo District WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: LOVE MADE VISIBLE
O
pus Studio recently moved their botanical flower shop from Woodstock to the brand new Silo District. Founder Marissa Pretorius tells us about her business and the move. Q: How did your business start? A: I studied photography and graphic design and pursued a career in advertising. I soon, however, realised that it wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to do something with my hands and, more so, work for myself. While travelling through the south of France, I walked into a flower shop and just knew there and then that I wanted to work with flowers. I came back and started building my brand. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We were based in Woodstock for five years at The Foundry, which is a hub for young and
upcoming artists. Woodstock, however, is very destinationorientated with not much foot traffic. The new Silo District, which is focused around the Zeitz MOCAA, offers a larger footprint, more premium clientele and international exposure. It allows us to take our brand to the next level and grow our business. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was approached by Mark Noble, development manager of the Silo District. I initially turned down the opportunity. It was a big decision for my business and quite a scary one too. A few months later I received another mail and reconsidered. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We’re based in Silo 3 in an outside corner unit that gets lots of natural light. As we specialise in plants, it’s essential for us to have good light and fresh air. A direct loading bay was also an important factor to consider. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Our neighbours include local brands like Kirsten Goss and Kat van Duinen, as well as Southern Guild – a gallery representing local South African artists, The Silo Hotel, Glasshouse Rejuvenation, Bang and Olufsen, Lindt and Sushi Box.
compared to our previous premises in Woodstock. However, the V&A Waterfront operates on turnover rental which works well for us. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: Currently, the Silo District is still under some construction and not all of the tenants have moved in. We’re seeing more and more foot traffic every week, but will only have a better idea once the Zeitz MOCAA is open and the District is in full operation. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We just expanded, so for now, we’re just finding our feet and enjoying our new space and the neighbourhood. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our website is mostly to showcase our work and signature hanging plant range. We’re now selling fresh flowers daily and are working on getting a system online for placing orders. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: In-store our hanging plants/ kokedama and, during season, wedding floral installations are our main offering.
Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Surprisingly the base rental is very fair and not much more

T
he beach may not be the only reason to move to Bloubergstrand, but it certainly is the focus of everyday living here. The long beachfront overlooking that picture postcard view of Table Mountain, with sunset vistas towards Robben Island, is a part of just about every resident’s day, whether for all-out kite-surfing, more leisurely SUP boarding, or a morning walk with the dogs. A cluster of cafes and restaurants on the central beachfront makes the most of the view. On windy days enjoying a swooping panorama of colourful kites dancing over the waves, and iconic sundowner spots such as The Blue Peter, draw the rest of Cape Town to share the glorious wide-open views. “I love the beach walk that I do almost every day – it’s like being on holiday 365 days a year!” says author and artist Ann Gadd, who moved here 33 years ago. “I was a competitive windsurfer and wanted to live closer to the sea to practice.” Blouberg also turned out to be an ideal place to bring up a family. “I chucked my kids into the sea from a young age which gave them a lifestyle alternative to computer games,” she says. Families are also attracted to the area by the good selection of schools, both public and private, in the adjoining suburbs of Milnerton, Table View, Sunningdale and Parklands.
Sunningdale and Parklands, are still undergoing new residential development and a huge new mall here is set to rival Canal Walk when it opens in September, providing serious retail therapy on the doorstep. Otherwise, there are plenty of small-scale “village” malls for grocery shopping, and Bayside is currently the best place for clothes shopping and movies. More watersports are on offer at Rietvlei, part of Table Bay Nature Reserve, popular for water-skiing, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing, and the wetland reserve is also a mecca for bird-watching, with pelicans, flamingos and many other species. And for watersports and nature lovers another bonus of living in Blouberg is that it’s the gateway to the West Coast, just keep on going up the R27. If big skies, the smell of the ocean, the cries of seagulls and an active, outdoor lifestyle appeal, Blouberg ticks all the boxes.
Coastal development has reached its northernmost possible point at Big Bay, with the conservation area of Blaauwberg Nature Reserve creating a natural boundary of strandveld and fynbos between the coastal suburbs and Melkbosstrand. But neighbours

Semigration to KZN is growing
T
he semigration of buyers, notably Gauteng buyers, to the Western Cape is a trend that has been growing over the last few years. But in reality, large numbers of upcountry buyers are also flocking to KwaZulu-Natal, predominantly to the burgeoning North Coast region. Says Sascha Bausch, Pam Golding Properties area specialist in Zimbali, “With its close proximity to King Shaka International Airport and proliferation of secure lifestyle estates, the North Coast areas from Umhlanga, Umdloti and Sibaya through to Ballito and Zimbali, are increasingly in demand among out-of-town buyers, particularly
where the major breadwinner commutes to the workplace in Gauteng, while the family resides within a secure estate and enjoys the lifestyle benefits of living in this highly appealing part of KZN.
seeing a number of Joburg buyers investing in our Umhlanga and Sibaya residential developments.” Sandra Gordon, senior research analyst for Pam Golding Properties says, “While the ongoing semigration of South Africans from the interior to the coastal provinces has been a critical factor behind the outperformance of the Western Cape housing market in recent years, it appears that soaring Cape house prices, combined with worsening congestion in the Mother City, is prompting many homebuyers to consider other coastal destinations – particularly the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.”
“A luxurious, furnished and beautifully appointed home in a contemporary design and with fairway frontage in Zimbali, recently fetched R17m,” she says. Carol Reynolds and Gareth Bailey, Pam Golding Properties area principals for Durban Coastal, concur with the trend towards semigration among upcountry homebuyers, “In the estates we’re
Cash buyers in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs on the increase
C
ash is king in the Southern Suburbs where many of the buyers don’t need bonds, says Cyndy Minnaar, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty area specialist. “As in the Atlantic Seaboard suburbs, a large percentage of cash sales has been the norm for some time in Newlands, and in many of the other Southern Suburbs areas such as Claremont and Constantia, and these transactions appear to be on the increase,” says Minnaar.
“This is corroborated by Propstats data which reveals that only nine (22,5%) of the 40 sales that took place in Newlands between 1 January and end May to date were bonded. The figures are similar in other sought-after Southern Suburbs areas during this period. In Constantia, just under 40% of the transactions required finance with most bond applications being for around 50% of the sale price. In Claremont 48% of the transactions were cash sales,” Geffen says.
Lew Geffen, chairman, Lew Geffen, Sotheby’s International Realty, says,
“The Newlands freehold purchase price per square metre has long been one of
the highest in the Southern Suburbs, so the area generally appeals to more affluent buyers,” says Minnaar. “While some buyers do apply for bonds, they generally don’t make the sale subject to bond finance, as they possibly have other means of financing the deal as well.” However, in spite of the continued prevalence of cash sales, the subdued economy has begun to affect buying trends, one of the most notable being a cooling in the demand for new homes.
Consumers’ appetite for long-term debt decreasing
T
im Akinnusi, executive head: sales and client management, Nedbank Home Loans, says that given the country’s uncertain economic outlook, South Africa can expect that this will have a negative effect on consumer confidence in terms of consumers’ appetite to take on longterm debt in the form of new lending on properties. As a result, general residential property market growth in the second half of 2017 is likely to remain slow to declining. However, the levels of market activity differ by property and consumer segments, which gives some interesting opportunities for both buyers and sellers alike. For example, with Gauteng being the most economically active metro in South Africa, it will experience higher demand
for residential property between the price range of R600,000 and R2,5m compared to other provinces, as young people migrate there for employment opportunities. By comparison, the demand for housing in the R4m to R10m bracket is likely to be higher among cash investors than among buyers seeking bonds from banks. “Nedbank remains positive about the long-term view of the South African property market, given that consumer demand for housing is still strong and this demand far outstrips the supply of residential properties. Therefore, we remain aligned to this long-term view and continue to provide clients with home loans in all property segments,” says Akinnusi.
An attractive, highly marketable home can be overlooked by buyers if the listing images are poor quality or don’t showcase the property’s selling points. For this reason, it’s imperative that listing photos are high-quality images that draw in buyers’ attention and provide them with insight into what the property has to offer. Buyers aren’t going to take the time to see the home in person if they aren’t interested in what the images portray online. Sellers should ensure that they’re completely satisfied with the images that the agent uses to market their home. ADRIAN GOSLETT, REGIONAL DIRECTOR AND CEO, RE/MAX OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
