Happy 18 , Four Cousins! th
E
veryone’s favourite cousins just turned 18! Four Cousins began in the 1990s, when, after completing their studies, Hennie, Neil, Bussell and Phillip joined their family farm Van Loveren Vineyards. By 2000 they had created Four Cousins and were so confident of the brand that they even put their faces on the bottle. Little did they know how big this new venture would become. Today, Four Cousins is enjoyed in more than 62 countries and is easily the biggest-selling wine in the country.
To mark this milestone, Four Cousins has been given a smashing makeover which casts fresh light on Four Cousins quality, style and authenticity in every bottle.
“It’s very humbling the way Four Cousins has been embraced by South Africans, whether in the traditional Cape Wine region, Soweto and Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, universities or the younger consumer,” says Phillip Retief, CEO, Van Loveren Family Vineyards.
“We’re excited about the new packaging launched in the run-up to the Four Cousins’ 18th birthday, but it’s also a way of saying: thank you, South Africa,” says Phillip.
Four Cousins has been a part of so many occasions for South Africans, they’ve almost become family. When I first moved out of my home and into an apartment with my best friend, we celebrated our big move with Four Cousins Sweet Rosé. Seen as a wine for the people, as Phillip explains, “People identify with the Four Cousins family, while even referring to themselves as the fifth cousin in many instances. They identify with what Four Cousins stands for – friendship, family and the memories we hold dear.”
The fresher appearance reflects all the wholesome attributes and attractive values associated with the home and heritage of Four Cousins – from the fertile soils and plentiful sunshine that feed the vineyards, to the generations of families who’ve made the beautiful Breede River Valley their home.
Join me as we raise a toast to Four Cousins and another phenomenal 18 years!

Organic by design On the Polkadraai Hills, Johan Reyneke is showing just how good organic and biodynamic wines can be WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED
J
ohan Reyneke would be the first to admit that his first attempt at organic viticulture did not go well.
“It was an absolute disaster!” smiles Johan, one bright winter’s morning, standing beside a row of old vines. With his vineyard soon plagued by pests and disease, he realised that he needed to be “organic by design, not organic by neglect”. It was a pivotal moment, but that was nearly 20 years ago. In the years since, Reyneke Organic has evolved into one of South Africa’s leading biodynamic and organic cellars. Little wonder that around 80% of his wines are snapped up overseas.

“Conventional farming is very effective, it makes farming a lot easier, but it comes at a price,” says Johan. “We have to ask questions about the sustainability of it all.” Sustainability is key to his approach to biodynamic and organic wine farming, and while he is the custodian of 120ha of the Polkadraai Hills, not all of it is planted with vineyards.
“In nature, you get stability through diversity,” he explains, as his herd of Nguni cattle rumble past. Across the farm, the pastures, cattle, chickens – and even weeds – have a role to play. “You have to stop fighting nature, and work with it.” That extends to the cellar, where winemaker Rudiger Gretschel pays careful attention to letting the grapes – and their organic, biodynamic vineyards – shine through. The organic range may be the entry-level offering, but certainly over-delivers on quality. Alongside a bright and fruitforward blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the Syrah is superb, and excellent value. Also look out for new additions to the range, including a 100% Chenin Blanc and an approachable Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend. There’s a noticeable step up to the biodynamic range, and the old-vine Chenin Blanc sourced from old vineyards is particularly good. If it’s Syrah you’re after, splurge on the Reserve Red. Made from 100% Syrah, it’s not cheap, but it’s a wine that wouldn’t look out of place in France’s Rhône valley.

also her brainchild – Jessica decided it was time we had an authentic crêperie to rival those in Paris. The recipe is simple – a savoury menu of traditional buckwheat galettes made from scratch with naturally glutenfree flour imported from Canada, and a sweet section of classic French crêpes, made with regular flour.
Designer Haldane Martin worked closely with owner Jessica Rushmere interpreting her personal swan theme in the tiles and beautifully repeating swan motif, and a cluster of gilded birdcages as light fittings. The overall effect is harmonious with France alluded to in the colour scheme – red, white and blue – and plenty of local South African creativity.
For breakfast in classic French style, the galette with ham, cheese, and an egg cooked in place on the galette is satisfying and nutritious, and there’s a South African version with egg, streaky bacon and mushrooms. Eggs are free range and all ingredients sustainably sourced, the cheese a delicious combo of Emmental and Gruberg that melts into the galette as it cooks and forms a gorgeous almost toasted layer.

On the sweet crêpe menu, you can go for simple classics like Nutella, cinnamon and lemon, or salted caramel, or sample Swan’s creative dessert montages. My Lucky Luc orange crêpe came with luscious orange sauce, generous toasted almonds and fresh thyme lending it a delightful element of unexpected contrast. There’s dark-roasted coffee sourced from a micro-roastery in False Bay and creative tea infusions dreamed up by Jessica exclusively for Swan with the help of the Nigiro tea-master. Beautiful indulgence Reviewing the luxury facial at Chelsea Clinic & Spa
WORDS: BELINDA MOUNTAIN

I
’ve reached an age where there is all manner of treatments and procedures that can be done to my face. No doubt you can choose to undertake these when you're younger as well, but when you’re faced with dewy 20-something skin in the mirror, you are far less likely to consider spending your hard-earned cash on these things. Not so as you careen towards 40.
treatments included, like a lip wax and an eyebrow tint. Also − why, as you get older, must hairs start sprouting from your chin in the most alarming manner? Luckily the spa now offers a treatment called Epilfree, which targets light coloured hairs (unlike laser) and gets rid of errant chin hairs permanently, at an affordable price.
Facials have become a necessary indulgence for me, so I was excited to review Chelsea Clinic & Spa’s 90-minute customised luxury facial. On arriving at the spa in Wynberg, my therapist Nicole spent time analysing my skin and then chose which products to use. Cleansing, steaming, exfoliation and “extractions” followed.
Nicole was hugely knowledgeable about all sorts of treatments and products I had never heard about, such as ColourScience sunscreen that goes on in powder form, so you simply reapply it over your make up, chemical peels and microneedling, and even a very popular treatment called the MonaLisa Touch, which is all about gynaecological health. You learn something new every day.
It was then time for a post-extraction solution to kill any nasty bacteria, after which a customised serum and masque were applied, followed by a heavenly shoulder and facial massage. What makes a luxury facial different to a basic one, is that you get two extra waxing or tinting
The spa is all rich velvet and twinkling chandeliers, glowing candles and Zenlike courtyard gardens. You emerge from it feeling utterly pampered, with the smell of clean mint in your nostrils, the feel of hot towels on your weary skin, and a lighter spring in your step as you go about your day.

My business neighbourhood Ses’fikile Wines is an innovative and inclusive wine brand born in Gugulethu WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
S
es’fikile means “we have arrived”. The name speaks to the optimism felt by founder Nondumiso Pikashe in the “new” South Africa, where opportunities are open to everyone. She tells us how she built the brand from scratch working from her home in Gugulethu. Q: How did your business start? A: I had been teaching for 11 years in Khayelitsha and felt that I’d reached the ceiling. I got the entrepreneurial urge and the wine industry – an area that had been neglected during transformation – interested me. Up until now, it’s been closed to my community – very few kids would aspire to become, for example, a viticulturist or to travel the world and learn about other wine-producing countries. It’s a language I’d like to hear our kids speak. I’ve tested the Ses’fikile brand nationally and found the local market resonating with the name. Consumers are intrigued, want to know what it means, and love the celebratory component of it. However, I’m struggling with mainstream retailers who find the

name too “ethnic”, so I’m working on making a compelling case as I believe it is a brand that can speak to the whole world. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: My business is based at my home in Gugulethu – it’s more circumstance than choice – to be cost-effective in building a new brand. First I created the Ses’fikile brand, then I built relationships and partnerships with the wine farms. I choose the grape varieties and accompanying wine style and work with a viticulturist. I negotiate a package for the production of my wine and the warehousing in Stellenbosch. And then I sell my brand and run the admin side of the business from home. Q: How did you find your premises? A: It’s my home. I was born in Gugulethu and raised between here and Langa. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Working from home isn’t always ideal, but it’s quite central and convenient for easy access to the N2 and N1. I hold some meetings here and some in coffee shops or hotels. Gugulethu is a vibrant community with lots of businesses operating around me. I’m also about to start working with a company operating township tours to give wine-tastings here in Gugulethu. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: T he popular Mzoli’s, people doing

tourism, marketing, grocery stores, NGOs, all sorts. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: In Gugulethu, a business space is roughly R5,000 per month, space dependent. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: I don’t sell at all from home, so those visiting will just be for occasional meetings. Ses’fikile is sold through Wine Concepts in Newlands and is on the wine lists at Bantry Bay Hotel and Simon’s Restaurant at Groot Constantia. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: A long-term goal is to find a wine farm where all operations will take place, including wine tourism. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Ses’fikile is sold online through wine.co.za. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our Ses’fikile Chenin Blanc Roussanne, which was in the finals of the Perswijn competition in Amsterdam, and the Ses’fikile Shiraz blend, which won a bronze medal at the 2018 London Wine Competition.

Higgovale Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: NATASHA LASSEN & GOOGLE MAPS *Map not to scale
Being wind-free is a major factor of living in Higgovale – and the views are fabulous. You really feel as if you’re living in the country, with squirrels and hadedas and guinea fowl in your garden, but you have the proximity to town and good schools. And there’s very little traffic within the suburb. JANET MALLEY, RESIDENT
P
erched on the rocky slopes at the highest edge of the Cape Town City Bowl, Higgovale has never lost its connection with the mountain. Steeply winding streets, towering pine trees and scraps of forested mountain kloof give it an almost rural feel, despite the panoramic views over the city and its walkingdistance proximity to the urban vibe. “Higgovale offers more diverse views than any suburb,” says designer Sally Chapman. “My studio has everchanging views over the City Bowl, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. It’s great for inspiration.” The first thing residents cite even before the views, is the absence of the fierce summer south-easter. “Especially close to Kloof Nek, you’re in this little valley, so when the wind is pumping everywhere else, it’s not here,” says Sally.
SHOP:
DO: • Hike straight on to Table Mountain trails • Climb Lion’s Head • Go to the beach at Camp’s Bay or Clifton • Music in the Park at De Waal Park in summer • Harvest your own vegetables at Oranjezicht City Farm on Saturdays from 10am to 12pm
• Gardens Centre: Pick n Pay, Woolies Food, boutiques and specialist stores • Lifestyle on Kloof: Woolies Food, Wellness Warehouse, Olive Branch Deli and various services • Kloof Street: everything from designer boutiques to neighbourhood groceries • V&A Waterfront: serious retail therapy • Oranjezicht City Farm Market on Saturdays in Granger Bay: locallygrown vegetables and artisan foods
Quiet streets with no through traffic add to the close-to-nature peace, and guinea fowl and porcupines are often seen in the streets and gardens. “The trees in the area provide a strong sense of the seasons,” says one resident. “Summer is lush and hot, and in winter you can smell wood fires and see the mist rolling over the neck carrying the smell of the sea.”
Property
“Opportunities to buy property in Higgovale are few and far between, but once you’ve got your foot in the door, you’ll find it’s a magnificent suburb unlike any other in Cape Town. It’s a genuine slice of paradise and one where you’ll feel as if you’ve come home,” says RE/MAX Living sales associate David Spence. Steep slopes, curving cul de sacs and uneven terrain have led to Higgovale having a quirky and
varied architectural style. A resident for 48 years, Janet Malley and her husband built on an empty plot. “The plot being quite mountainous made building very interesting,” she recalls, “with ditches and dongas, rocks and millions of trees to build around.”
in the City Bowl include Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck, Herzlia High and the German International School. Slightly further away, are the Southern Suburbs’ schools, but residents can factor in the convenience of an easy school run against the traffic.
With only around 230 freehold properties and 104 sectional titles, property is in high demand and gets snapped up quickly. “On average, properties here are sold within six weeks of being put on the market. As few as nine properties have been sold in the last 12 months, so when opportunity knocks in Higgovale, you need to answer the door quickly!” exclaims David.
Explore
People often buy older houses for the stunning location and views, either renovating or demolishing and building anew. “What I’ve always loved about Higgovale are the trees,” says resident Sheryl Ozinsky. “We need to preserve green spaces and should be mindful of building larger and larger homes that destroy this very unique aspect of our neighbourhood.” “The trees are the most characteristic aspect of the neighbourhood,” agrees another resident, who spent two years building a new home. “They have inspired some beautiful homes that visually drift into the granite of Table Mountain and the wooded milieu.”
Schooling
“We decided to move to the area for the schools,” says a resident whose daughters attend St Cyprians. “It is the only IEB girls’ school in Cape Town and it offers a wonderful, rounded, whole-child education.” Other well-regarded schools close by
Walking is a favourite activity here as Table Mountain is practically your backyard with trails, hidden paths and steps leading up through the suburb’s green spaces, such as the Higgovale Trail off Leeuwenhof Road, where there’s plenty of forested green space for kids to adventure and mountain bike, as at Glencoe leading to rock climbers’ secret spot of Higgovale Quarry. Or walk down into the buzz of Kloof Street, with its endless choice of restaurants, and across to De Waal Park for leisurely summer Sunday concerts. Then there’s the neighbouring Oranjezicht City Farm, another green oasis, which followed on from the establishment of Oranjezicht and Higgovale Neighbourhood Watch. Sheryl says of the motivation for starting the farm, “People are looking to be reconnected with themselves, each other and with nature. Growing food is a lifestyle that is inherently centred on community – it’s a cooperative effort. Food gardens bring people together – people who may not have met otherwise.” The farm has since grown beyond the two neighbouring suburbs, with the market now held at Granger Bay, but locals can still volunteer at the urban farm, pick their own vegetables on Saturdays and join workshops there.

Agent insight A local property expert gives us the inside scoop on Higgovale MANNA EPICURE
Higgovale is the City Bowl’s – and one of South Africa’s – most exclusive residential suburbs. It’s situated in a quiet, wind-protected pocket against the iconic backdrop of Table Mountain with picturesque views of Table Bay and beyond. Due to its desirable location, larger erf sizes, beautiful greenery and limited supply, it remains a solid investment and hard to beat being so close to nature, yet close to town and just a five-minute drive to the beach. Growing demand for sectional titles
A
significant number of investors aiming to downsize from larger properties are setting their sights on the Cape Town City Bowl. “Sectional-title ownership has risen in popularity over the past 10 years. Issues of affordability for many buyers make sectional-title choices more appealing. Asking prices tend to be proportionately lower for sectionaltitle than freehold ownership. Factors such as security, communal living and fixed monthly costs in the form of levies, add to the appeal for buyers looking to downsize,” says RE/MAX Living sales associate David Spence. This demand is further emphasised by increases in the average sales prices for sectional-title property across Vredehoek, Tamboerskloof
and Gardens. Gardens has seen the greatest increase in average sales prices for sectional-title properties in the City Bowl with 11,2% from July 2017 to 2018. Vredehoek saw average sale-price increases in freehold and sectional-title properties of 18,7% and 8,8% respectively. Over the past 12 months, Higgovale has achieved the highest average freehold sales prices in the City Bowl, with Oranjezicht coming in second. The average sales prices of sectional-title properties have seen demand for Vredehoek climb. Oranjezicht saw the highest investment in the City Bowl from buyers, with combined sales of R325m, yet this is down 21,5% compared to combined sales of R414m the previous year.

Landscaping meets building design in Pran Boulevard
L
ocated on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in the Ridgeside precinct in Umhlanga, Pran Boulevard consists of two separate office buildings of three levels each above ground floor, linked together on each level with enclosed glazed bridges. There are three parking levels providing about 250 parking bays, as well as a ground-floor podium level with timber decks, walkways, landscaping, and water features. The total building area, including the parking levels, is about 18,600m². Paragon was commissioned by Shree Property Holdings to design the landscaping as part of the holistic design of the project. This meant using the building’s design language throughout the landscaping. “The client gave us the design freedom to sculpt the landscaping to complement the buildings’ angular and
distinctive design,” project architect Jurie Geldenhuys comments. A four-star Green Star rating was the target from the offset, which the project received in May this year. Over and above these specific client requirements, Paragon also had to adhere to the very specific requirements of the Ridgeside Management Association (RMA) concerning the treatment of corner sites in the precinct, as set out in the RMA Design Guidelines Volume 0 and 1. These guidelines relate to planting types, which had to be presented and approved by the RMA Design Review Committee. The guidelines also include planting recommended for use on specific streets, that 90% of all planting is to be indigenous, and that the landscaping plans are to list and motivate plant types to be used for approval.

Spring into cleaning It’s a great time to leap into action and give your space a deep clean WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
P
sychologists (and cleaning companies) report that clients who take charge of cleaning and organising, also take charge of their general health. In a nutshell, spring cleaning, says American psychologist Dr Jonathan Fader, has been associated with improved mood, decreased stress, and heightened creativity. Opening windows and letting in fresh air, eradicating everything from mould to stale smells, lift our spirits and give us a fresh start.
Washing machine
Washing machine interiors can become grubby, even emitting an odour. Disinfect with white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda (add a quarter cup bicarbonate of soda to a quarter cup water to the detergent container, and two cups vinegar into the drum). Run hot water into the machine – don’t let the machine drain – switch off, and allow this to sit for 30 to 60 minutes. Restart the machine, drain the water, and wipe it dry.
Bedding
Your duvets, under-blankets, and comforters need an intermittent refresh – two to three times a year. Read the manufacturer’s label – most will go into
your washing machine quite happily, otherwise, hand wash or dry clean.
of white vinegar on the bottom, let it bubble, then wipe with a sponge.
Beds
Carpets
For stains, make a paste of lemon juice and salt, or mix borax into a paste with a little water. Apply the mixture to the stain, work it in lightly, and leave it for 30 to 60 minutes. Wipe off with a clean towel or vacuum. Refresh your bed, and even give it a nice scent. There are a few recommended methods, but the most popular is to spray the mattress very lightly with vinegar, then lightly sieve bicarbonate of soda over that. Leave it for a few hours, then vacuum up any remaining soda. Many essential oils have antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties, so you can mix a tiny quantity into your bicarbonate of soda – smells good too, and can aid sleep.
Oven
That burning smell when you put on the oven, means it’s time to clean it. There are a few alternatives, but this works: chip off any loose, burnt pieces; spritz them with ammonia. Now sprinkle bicarbonate of soda and a few drops
Experts suggest deep cleaning high-traffic areas three to four times a year, and other lesser used ones, once or twice, even 18 months for, say, a bedroom. You can do this yourself by renting a machine, or call in your favourite carpet cleaner. If you have loose rugs, clean them every four or five years — or every 10 years if a rug is not walked on much. Overcleaning contributes to wear and tear.
Tiles
Clean kitchen and bathroom tiles with a cleaner with a neutral pH. Alternatively, pour half a cup of bicarbonate of soda into four litres of water, and apply the liquid with a mop. For grout, use the same mixture, but for tough stains, call in the pros.
Patio furniture
Furniture which stays outside is prone to mildew, and it will get dirty. Mix two cups white vinegar and two tablespoons dishwashing liquid in a bucket of hot water. Work it into the grooves of the plastic, rinse with cold water, and dry in the sun.
