he explosion of craft breweries in Cape Town has seen the shelves of local bottle stores groaning beneath the weight of a new crop of pale ales and weiss beers, porters and Pilsners. And while local brewers have certainly upped their game over the past decade, it’s hard to compete with a few centuries of brewing tradition.

And that’s precisely what Rejeanne Vlietman wants to introduce to local palates. Rejeanne started the Belgian Beer Company in 2012, applying her years of experience at the helm of Den Anker, the acclaimed Belgian restaurant in the V&A Waterfront precinct. “It was a bit of a leap of faith, but the interest in beer was really taking off back then,” says Rejeanne. It was a prescient decision, and within a year the company had grown to include its own sales team and warehousing. Today the Belgian Beer Company represents a range of Belgian beer brands – the likes of Maredsous, Liefmans, La Chouffe and De Koninck – in the South African market, with up to 20 different beers on shelves in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, from hearty farm ales to blonde beers and fragrant fruit infusions.

ranschhoek has always been chef Reuben Riffel’s home base, and the last few months have seen him putting together a fresh menu for his newly opened restaurant, tucked away just off the Franschhoek Main Road in a light and welcoming renovated warehouse with mountain views and a large courtyard at the back. This promises to be the ideal spot for lazy summer lunches, and sundowners at the outside bar, where the signature aircraft wing from the old restaurant has found a new home. It was a cloudy winter day when we visited, with the tables around the log fire filled by the lunch crowd. There’s plenty of hearty winter fare on the menu, and the tough decision is whether to go for a Reuben’s
classic like the oxtail or try the Asianinfluenced new dishes. While we were tempted by the poké bowl featuring beetroot-cured Franschhoek salmon, for starters we were won over by the truffle oil on an English spinach salad; dressed up for winter with Parmesan, miso, yuzu soy and tempura cauliflower, it’s a winner of a salad that’s light yet satisfying. More substantial is the beef tartare with sugar-cured beef and roasted celeriac, dabs of porcini cream, and a mug of fries – raised to new heights of taste by truffle oil and Parmesan – to mop up all the juices. We then abandoned restraint and went for the braised beef cheek and oxtail, an old favourite that regulars won’t allow to be left off the menu. It’s a meal in itself, with contrasts in texture between the fall-apart oxtail, the flavoursome cheek and the melt-in-your-mouth sweetbreads and a panoply of vegetable purées and parsley coulis. Those often underrated winter roots, Jerusalem artichoke and celeriac, reveal their voluptuous side in the creamy and delicious risotto. The Vietnamese pho is chef Reuben’s current favourite, as assistant manager Astrid Cadle tells us, a real winter-warmer bowl, spicy with chilli and laden with noodles, bok choy and beef brisket. Reuben’s has always been strong on desserts and the new menu is no exception: the crème brûlée infused with star anise and combined with a pear and ginger sorbet is a match made in heaven. The decadent chocolate fondant offset by stout ice cream and salted caramel is sheer poetry.

Co-founder, Emma Dicks, tells us how the enterprise grew from her original social innovation programme working with high school girls in Khayelitsha.

E
nquiries from both upcountry and overseas visitors for holiday rentals in Llandudno and Hout Bay in the coming summer holidays are now flowing in steadily and increasing week by week, says Terry Mackenzie, rental agent, Cape Waterfront Estates. “Many property owners in Llandudno and Hout Bay like the idea of renting out their homes over part or all of the holiday season, but they don’t contact rental agents until it’s far too late,” says Mackenzie. “Now is the time to put your property in the hands of a good rental agent, because right now most of the better-organised holiday visitors are making their holiday plans.”
Mackenzie says that in Hout Bay suitable homes rent out in December and January at around R2,000 to R10,000 per day, while in Llandudno, one of the most affluent Atlantic Seaboard suburbs, homeowners are now able to charge from R6,000 to R60,000 per day – and in one or two cases even higher rentals have been acceptable to clients. These prices, she says, will probably seem high to many people, but worldwide Llandudno is seen as a top-of-the-range destination, and those paying for their holidays with First World currencies are still getting a bargain. Many Gautengers can also easily afford a holiday home in this price range, she says.
Q: How did your business start? A: My interest in teaching coding started because I didn’t graduate in computer science. I actually studied business science and it was only when I was doing an internship at a tech company that I realised how creative coding could be, the social impact it could have and how uninformed most of us are about it. My true interest is as an educator and my original programme Code 4 Cape Town was designed to bring coding to high school girls, initially in Khayelitsha, as a means of empowering young women to leverage technology for social innovation and encourage greater diversity in the African tech industry. As the programme grew we saw a wider need for high-quality tech education for all, and CodeSpace Academy was born.

our training room and our meeting rooms. Everyone gathers to eat lunch together at a long family table, where we host informal “Lunchtime Learning” sessions to share ideas and knowledge. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The Old Castle Brewery offers us a great ecosystem of entrepreneurs and tech companies. Some of the graduates of CodeSpace Academy are now working at Native VML, one of our neighbours. We also love that the architect is on site. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: We find the rental here to be great value for money given our proximity to the city. Q: How many people go through your office each day? A: Some weeks it’s just a few people using the office, and in others we host events with perhaps 40 or more people attending. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: There’s huge demand for coding academies in Cape Town as there is such demand for tech skills. CodeSpace works with partner organisations to establish and run tech education programmes. So far, we’ve launched several new sites across Cape Town and Stellenbosch and hope to expand soon to Johannesburg. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our students apply online at codespace.co.za, and all students access our courses on our CodeSpace learning portal. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Our Code101 course which is a onemonth part-time course that covers an introduction to coding, and a full-time five-month course training young web developers to kick-start a career in web development.

hile dealers and panel beaters have long boasted eat-off-the-floor workshops for their cars and clients, switching to a showroom-style garage at home adds to the convenience and pleasure of your property and increases the resale value. And the good news is that this can be achieved in just a few days.
Dust busting
The first step towards a spotless garage is eliminating dust in all ways possible. The three main culprits here are the floor, the garage door and any other doors or windows in the space. Good flooring is often one of the most expensive parts of any building project, but it’s generally money well spent. Garage floors should be smooth, free of cracks and easy to clean, and it’s worth investing in a product that will help you achieve this whether you do it yourself or bring in a professional. Paul Clark, owner, Vuka Floors, says, “While an epoxy coating is ideal for a garage floor, check that your garage floor is strong enough before you start. An easy way to test this is to take a sharp stone or tile and scratch the floor. If it crumbles easily, you may need your floor assessed by an epoxy application company before you go ahead. If it
doesn’t, you can buy an entry-level epoxy paint and simply do it yourself.” To keep your garage environment bright and clean, check that garage doors sit flush with the floor so they don’t let in dust and dirt. Attach a rubber strip to the bottom of the doors if necessary and do the same for the sides of the door and any other doors or windows that open into the room.
Shining up
The second step is a fresh coat of paint. This will also make the garage instantly brighter and cleaner. “A good, high grade, washable wall paint is the answer,” says Paul. “I would suggest a paint with a semi-gloss or gloss finish, as these are the easiest to clean and can lead to a sleek, industrial look to match the floors. Avoid a matt finish as these are easy to scuff and tend to fare poorly against mould.”

Having too much stuff is another major reason why most garages don’t look like the photo-shoot versions. So decluttering and classification is essential. Go through everything and sort it into three piles: keep, donate/sell and discard. Whether you choose clear stackable plastic

TOP TIPS: • Hang a tennis ball from the ceiling so that it taps the windscreen when your car is in the right spot. • Protect your car doors by attaching pool noodles or sponges to the walls in places where the doors might touch. • While shelves are less expensive and easier to access (you don’t need space to swing doors open), cupboards can protect from dust and are lockable. Consider sliding doors on cupboards if space is an issue. • Store similar items together and keep them visible – all camping gear in clear plastic tubs, nails and screws in glass or plastic jars. • Decant any messy garden fertilisers or chemicals into neat storage containers and label them clearly.

omplete with a scenic mountain backdrop, Claremont in the leafy Southern Suburbs straddles Main Road and the railway line, with Upper Claremont above and Lynfrae below. Both areas date back to the early 20th century, when the new railway and easy commute into the city spurred their development. Today, that convenient location is still a big part of the appeal for residents. “It’s suburban, offering bigger gardens and houses than suburbs closer to the city, yet it’s only 20 minutes’ drive to the City Bowl,” says Catherine Kowalski, freelance journalist and resident. “I love that the houses are old; ours was built in 1929, so you can expect high ceilings and wooden floors.” With neighbouring suburbs Newlands and Rondebosch, Claremont is in the catchment area of some of the city’s best schools, so families gravitate here for short school runs and the proximity to UCT and the Jammie Shuttle routes. The area has a sociable vibe, with kids often having friends from school on the same street. For those who surf, Muizenberg Beach is a 15-minute drive away. Sports fans have Newlands Rugby and Cricket stadiums nearby, and mountain bikers and dog-walkers have Newlands Forest and mountain trails less than
five minutes from Upper Claremont. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is also nearby for picnics, outdoor movies and concerts. The quiet residential streets often come alive with families, runners and dog-walkers heading to the local green spaces. “I love that I can take my children to Keurboom Park (one of several popular parks nearby), which runs into the Western Province Cricket Club and the Rondebosch Boys’ rugby fields below,” says Catherine. “There are people walking dogs, kicking a ball or out running at any time of day. The area has bike paths and a skateboard park for kids. In winter, we can catch tadpoles in the stream that runs through it. To get there, we cycle past coffee shops and restaurants. It’s the best of both worlds.” Claremont also has easy access to a variety of shopping facilities. You can make a quick stop at Palmyra Junction to visit Woolworths Food or buy ethical meat from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants. You can have a coffee break and do your grocery shopping at Belvedere Square. You can also enjoy high-end retail therapy and movies at Cavendish Square, or hunt for bargains at Access Park’s factory shops. Close to the M3 and the M5, Claremont feels connected to the whole of Cape Town, yet has everything you need is right on your doorstep.
