All will be revealed Imagine a luxury Winelands getaway where your weekend has been planned for you from start to finish
NEED TO KNOW The Ultimate and Superior packages are categorised according to their accommodation offerings. The former costs R8,200 per couple and will give you the crème de la crème of accommodation in the valley, while the latter is R5,650 per couple and offers a stay in stylish boutique hotels and guesthouses.
EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELF The next mystery weekend will be taking place from 23 to 24 August and 27 to 28 September. For bookings or queries, contact Carmen Arendse on mysteryweekend@franschhoek.org.za.
I
know, it sounds too good to be true. But it’s not. What it is, is the Mystery Weekend and it takes place three to four times a year in the town of Franschhoek. This bespoke weekend getaway package includes two nights’ accommodation, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning, dinner at an exclusive restaurant the Saturday evening, and lunch on the Sunday afternoon before heading home, well-rested and tummies bursting with the most delicious food you can imagine. In between all of this there’s a host of fun-filled activities that have been organised for you – you can do as much or as little as you want. The idea behind the Mystery Weekend is to explore Franschhoek, explains Linda Coltart, the mastermind behind the scenes. Linda came up with the idea eight years ago as a way to attract visitors to the town during the off-season months. “We were looking for ways to attract winter business, trying various offers, discounts, etc. At that time, I used to sit on the accommodation committee. I proposed my idea and was asked to put it together and run with it.” Eight years later, the mystery weekends have welcomed almost 2,000 visitors
to the region. “We’ve tried new ways to present it, but it always comes back to the original idea – great places to sleep, eat and drink with a hint of the experiences and offerings the valley has hidden away,” says Linda. It’s all very cloak and dagger… You’ll receive an email directing you to the check-in point. That’s all. Once there, you’ll receive your Mystery Weekend box, containing all the details you need to know – where you’ll be staying, where you’ll be dining, and what you’ll be doing. After checking in to your weekend home, the festivities officially kick off with an informal get-together at an establishment in town (this changes every time) where you can mingle with fellow mystery weekenders. It’s a jovial affair, the flow of conversation eclipsed only by the flowing of the wine. We share a table with a couple from Joburg who received this weekend as a gift (what a gift!) and another couple who have attended at least one weekend every year for the past four years. “We do get a lot of repeat business. It’s also been great to see how our market has grown with guests from as far away as Pretoria, East London, and the Free State,” says Linda. Of course, the biggest part of what makes the mystery weekends as successful as they are, is the participation of the establishments that warmly welcome the visitors. For the July mystery weekend, there were 19 hotels and guesthouses and 20 restaurants taking part. (But the participants change every weekend.) Our mystery box revealed that we would be staying at the five-star Franschhoek Manor and dining at Foliage on the Saturday evening. Breakfast on Saturday would be at Le Petit Manoir (the best perfectly poached eggs Benedict you’ll ever find), at the guesthouse on Sunday, and lunch at Cosecha Restaurant on Noble Hill Wine Estate Sunday afternoon. But first, foraging with Foliage owner Chris Erasmus on the Saturday morning. Chris used to head up the kitchen at La Motte before opening Foliage several years ago, to, as he puts it, “put the real Franschhoek on a plate”. That evening we get to experience Chris’s vision of what exactly it means to taste the real Franschhoek. And it is glorious. The next morning, I unwillingly tear myself out of bed, we say goodbye to our gracious host, Cindy, and conclude the weekend at Consecha, a Mexican restaurant serving the most delicious, authentic tortillas, tacos and tequilas. We drive home, back to reality, wishing we could turn back the clock to Friday afternoon.

W
ith 20 years in the cellar to her credit, Debbie Thompson was recently appointed as cellar master of acclaimed Stellenbosch estate Simonsig. Q: What was the ‘spark’ that led you into a career in winemaking? A: In 1996 I went to the University of Stellenbosch with the idea of becoming a vet. As a first-year student life is all about trying new things and experimenting. Being in the heart of one of the most beautiful wineproducing areas in the world, visiting wine farms and tasting a lot of great, and not-so-great, wines was certainly rated as one of our favoured “extracurricular” activities! Let’s just say veterinary science took a back seat.
The crown Jewell’s

fter 19 years at Bread and Wine building a solid reputation for charcuterie, breads and the kind of honest food that chefs like to eat on their day off, Neil and Tina Jewell have started a new adventure. Jewell’s at the Spice Route is a collaboration with Liam Tomlin of Chef’s Warehouse, but the kitchen is all Neil’s, with a short à la carte menu that changes often. “The whole concept is to use as much produce from the estate as possible. To celebrate what the farm can give to us and what we can put on the plate, without being pompous about it,” says Neil. The estate, which includes Fairview, provides free-range Angus beef, lamb, pork and dairy produce, and
My passion for winemaking really started to evolve when I began to work at Simonsig under the mentorship of Johan Malan (owner). I was thrown into the deep end and it was really a case of sink or swim!
a vegetable garden is in the works below the restaurant. For his prized charcuterie, Neil continues to use pasture-reared pigs from Glen Oakes. Building up a charcuterie selection takes time – his prosciutto ages for seven years – and Neil had only had seven weeks when we visited, but our charcuterie platter was already laden – gorgeous herby ham, saucisson sec, salami sticks, spreadable salami, luscious pork rillettes, peppered beef salami, and an amazingly subtle and delicious mortadella. “The food should do the talking – it’s the star of the show,” Neil says and, as we work through the menu, it does. Wild mushrooms, lightly pickled, on tagliatelle with a pea purée, winter meets spring. An intense carrot terrine, simple and pretty with labneh, sumac and baba ganoush, elevates the humble vegetable to a welldeserved spotlight. A surprisingly refreshing lamb jelly and tartare have whispers of mint and vinegar, crunchy sprouted mustard and capers. Our mains are earthy, straightforward celebrations of the meat and generous portions: stunning dry-aged Angus beef served with Fairview St Louis cheese polenta, mushrooms and roasted Jerusalem artichoke, a symphony of winter richness; CBC pale ale bacon belly chop, crispy crackling, melting fat and full smoky depth, with sweetbreads, pommes purée and crispy kale. Desserts continue the high note. I loved the macadamia panna cotta with grilled guava and nut streusel, a green sauce of kiwi and cucumber bringing a hint of summer Pimms to the depths of winter. It’s relaxed enough to bring the family, there’s a real-food kids’ menu and plenty of outdoor seating next to the wide lawn and old oak trees, with serene views over the valley.
Q: What was it like for young female winemakers in the late 90s? How has the industry changed since then? A: It was a challenge and required working even harder to showcase your skills and abilities. In this day and age there’s a far more natural acceptance of female winemakers, where in the past the industry
was almost entirely dominated by men. I’m happy to say that over the years that perception has changed and female winemakers are now a force to be reckoned with. Q: Twenty years at a single cellar is a long time in the wine industry… what’s kept you at Simonsig all these years? A: Diversity in our wine portfolio, new challenges and triumphs keep life interesting. The Malan family are pioneers; Johan’s work ethic and great ideas continue to inspire me and this has moulded and forged me and made me the winemaker I am today. Q: How daunting is it taking the reins of such an iconic family-owned winery? A: It’s a tremendous honour to be given the responsibility of being cellar master at Simonsig, especially as Simonsig and everyone who works there are like family to me. It’s a daunting task for sure and there’s little room for error, so the pressure is always on. Q: If you could make only one more wine in your career, what would it be? A: I choose pinotage because of its challenging and unpredictable nature and for the adrenaline rush I get while taming, crafting and sculpturing this unique South African varietal.

How does your garden grow? You don’t have to live in a large space to have a garden all of your own WORDS: VICKI SLEET

on’t let a small thing like the lack of space deter you from channelling your inner gardener and letting your green fingers fly. You’d be surprised just how easy it is to incorporate plants into your home.
Hanging out
If you’re stuck for space or not sure what to do with an empty wall, a hanging garden could be your green solution. It works well with succulents and hardy grasses that need little care and water. Choose a cylindrical container that sits comfortably against the wall and plant a selection of species with interesting shapes and colourways. Alternatively, choose plants with scented flowers and allow the fragrance to waft through your home. Hanging gardens planted with herbs and vegetables are increasingly being seen in urban environments. Keep in mind that they require plenty of sunlight.
Climb the walls
Create a mini garden using pallet wood nailed together into a neat grid and criss-crossed with fishing gut,
and deck it out with epiphytes, or air plants, which can grow without soil. Bromeliads are popular at-home epiphyte choices, as are some species of orchids. Watering is best done by removing the installation, submerging it and the plants in water for up to 20 minutes, then draining it well.
a modern, minimalist space. Some of the species that do well inside are the Natal fig, tiger bark fig, Japanese maple and Chinese maple.
Upcycle

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a series of containers for a potted garden or green indoor installation. Use what’s around you – things like discarded copper lighting components and PVC pipes could work. Use coir (fibre from coconut husks), which retains water very well, to create a sense of cohesion between the different containers. Whatever you use, you’ll need to ensure you have proper drainage. Drill or punch holes in the bottom of your container to allow excess water to seep out.
Living artworks
Bonsai can be used as decor objects to make a style statement in your home. These miniature ornamental trees command attention and look great in
A terrarium garden is easy to install and maintain. You’ll need a glass container with an opening that’s big enough to fit your hand through. Start with a base layer of pebbles followed by some horticultural charcoal – to absorb fumes due to decomposing plant material in the closed environment – and on top of that goes a thick layer of potting soil. Adding moss in-between plants will help to retain moisture in the soil. Plants that are suitable for terrariums enjoy high humidity and low to moderate light levels and will remain relatively small. These include ferns, miniature orchids, African violets, cyclamens, air plants and peace-in-the-home.

A: Getting into the design industry at age 46 had some challenges as entering a new industry relies on a network that is only built up over time. I was lucky to be discovered by Platform Creative Agency who selected some of my designs for the annual 100% Design show in 2016. That put my brand on the design map in South Africa. Plettenberg Bay One of South Africa’s favourite holiday destinations, summer playground of the super-wealthy, and beach and nature paradise, Plett, as it’s affectionately known, ticks all the downtime boxes *Map not to scale
WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED, SHUTTERSTOCK & GOOGLE MAPS
T
he bustling town of Plettenberg Bay’s setting on the Garden Route between Knysna and the Tsitsikamma National Park, offers beautiful beaches an indigenous forest, lagoon and river – nature in all its glory. Beneath the glamorous patina of millionaires’ beach villas, yachts and polo at Kurland, lies the everyday small-town vibe of a close-knit community, which appreciates the slower pace of life here, and is active in volunteer organisations such as the Keep Plett Clean campaign, Plett Watch, Muddy Pooches and PAWS. More and more young families are moving to the area to bring their children up close to nature. “It’s such a beautiful area from the perspective of the outdoors – we’re close to several beaches where we can safely walk our dogs, forests to walk in, and it’s lovely for the children,” says Bronwyn Harrison, Nature Wild kindergarten. “We love the beauty, the holiday atmosphere, the people and outdoor activities that are available, and love December when the town is full to capacity and vibrant,” says resident Alison Bryant. The six weeks of the December school holidays are the only time of the year when every house glows with lights and laughter, all the holiday homes opened up for summer. “Plettonians call it ‘crazy time’ when visitors from all over South Africa, especially Joburg and Cape Town, spend their summer holiday with us,” say Sandra and Peter Bippus of Safari Guesthouse. The rest of
the summer season is busy with international visitors exploring the Garden Route, who mostly stay in the hotels, guesthouses and Airbnbs, tourism forming a large part of the local economy.
Property As one of South Africa’s most soughtafter coastal destinations, Plettenberg Bay has a wide variety of stunning property. At the top end of the market, much in demand as dream second homes for both South African and foreign ‘swallows’ investors, are luxury contemporary villas with pools and ocean views, or historic beach houses in the old town, spectacular holiday apartments and forest hideaways. Weekenders love that Plett has its own airport with direct flights from Joburg and Cape Town. New upmarket gated estates cater to the growing number of families and retirees moving here permanently. More affordable properties can be found away from the prime beachfront real estate, and outside town, where nature lovers find spacious plots and smallholdings in idyllic forest and mountain settings such as The Crags and Harkerville.
Schools Plettenberg Bay Primary School and Wittedrift High School both have a long history of providing excellent public education in both English and Afrikaans to the Plettenberg Bay community. Greenwood Bay College
is a new private school born from the merging of two independent schools, offering Caps in primary school and Cambridge International curriculum in high school. The Raphaeli Waldorf School, as the only Waldorf school on the Garden Route, attracts many families to the area.
Explore One of Plett’s claims to fame is its mild climate averaging 300 days of sunshine a year, and warm Indian Ocean lapping wide sandy blue flag beaches, so that an outdoor lifestyle comes naturally. Stand-up paddling on the Poortjies lagoon, cruising with a picnic up the Keurbooms River, fishing, waterskiing, surfing, canoeing down the river at Nature’s Valley to the lagoon, are just a few of the water activities to enjoy. On land, hikes around the trails on the Robberg peninsula, forest hikes around Harkerville, horse-riding, beach walks and runs, mountain-biking on forest trails, and kloofing are woven into the fabric of everyday life for locals. “It’s a great place for children to learn about the natural world,” says Bronwyn. “There’s a nature reserve full of indigenous trees near us at The Crags, we’re surrounded by animal sanctuaries, like Tenikwa wildlife rehabilitation centre and Lawnwood snake sanctuary, all very informative.” More wildlife experiences include Birds of Eden, an enormous freeflight aviary enclosing 2,3ha of forest filled with bird life, and Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary.

The Plett and Knysna Garden Route area is perceived to be the Côte d’Azur of SA, offering a sought-after lifestyle for young families and retirees. Greenwood Bay Private School has increased hugely in attendance, as families focus on a safer and healthier lifestyle away from the city. All this is impacting on the dynamics of real estate. Plettenberg Bay is renowned for its endless white beaches, beautiful lagoon and river mouth, whale watching, nature reserve, pansy shells and adventure activities. It’s the only place you can view great white sharks from land. It has developed into a beautiful, modern town with all amenities that combines buzzing activity with a peaceful environment, lazy beach days and many action activities like diving, hiking and bungee jumping. Plett has an exceptional climate with 300 days of sunshine a year and mild water temperatures (14°C to 23°C). All of this has led to a high degree of semigration and increased local purchasing. This, in turn, causes Plett to continuously outperform most other areas.
