Celebrating women here’s no doubt that 2018 is the year of the woman. There has never been a more empowering time to be female than right now. Celebrities and ordinary citizens have raised their voices against oppression and discrimination, and the world has listened. With International Women’s Day coming up on Thursday, 8 March, we challenge you to add your voice and to make a positive change for women.

fter seven years at Grande Provence, chef Darren Badenhorst is deeply embedded in the food lore of the Franschhoek Valley, spending Mondays foraging for the wild ingredients that infuse many of his dishes. His intimate new restaurant on Franschhoek’s main street reflects his local knowledge and expertise with French cuisine.

“The whole concept of the restaurant is French and Franschhoek,” he says. “A town like this, even though it’s so small, has more than enough variety of produce and wine to offer, so we should showcase it.” The wine list is 100% from Franschhoek wine estates and sommelier Munashe Kwaramba, with his soft-voiced enthusiasm, has a gift for pairing wines to your personal taste and to each dish. Evenings have been fully booked for Darren’s six- and eight-course tasting menus ever since Le Coin Français opened in October, but on some evenings drop-ins can get lucky with a veranda table. You can also go for lunch, where

a pared-down but elegant a la carte menu is well worth travelling for. Our ruby-cured sea bass ceviche was exquisitely plated, with dabs of aioli topped with tiny sprigs of wild sorrel and yuzu pearls. The bacon and egg – confit pork belly topped with a poached duck egg, a hint of truffle in creamed yolk spuma, crunchy wisps of cep-dusted pork crackling and pickled shimeji mushrooms – is a substantial showstopper of flavours. Darren treated us to a glimpse of the theatre he brings to the eight-course chef’s journey menu, with a cold smoking glass dome over a jewellike plate of cured monkfish, squid ink mesh, hints of orange zest and vanilla – elaborate and delicious. Big, bold flavours and layered complexity characterised the wines and meat dishes on the lunch menu: a gorgeous lamb confit with hints of warm spice, foraged nettle and river cress purée, and a venison loin (aged with slippery jack mushroom and leek ash) on miso marmalade. We ended the evening with a light bowl of tiny apple puffs, apricot gel and refreshingly acidic yoghurt ice cream with pops of yuzu and a sneak peek at the playful “elements of chocolate” pre-dessert from the journey menu. Beautifully detailed plating, perfectly balanced flavours and wonderful wine pairings make Le Coin Français a worthy addition to the Franschhoek fine dining scene.

arch is always my favourite month – people are excited for the chance to get out of the city over the long weekends, the weather is slightly cooler but still warm enough to spend the day in the sun and there are always plenty of festivals and events happening in the Mother City to keep everyone occupied. Here are our top three events you shouldn’t miss.

EL ANATSUI

Iziko Museums of South Africa, in partnership with the Goodman Gallery and the Friends of the Iziko South African National Gallery, presents El Anatsui: Meyina. The exhibition, currently on show at the South African National Gallery until 29 April, presents a portrait of the artist by bringing together interesting objects from his life: his work, including large-scale sculptural installations, letters, texts written about him, the music he listens to and more. As one of the most important contemporary artists in Africa, and the world, it’s a humbling experience to see his life and work come together on South African soil in this exhibition.

An evening with Myles Kennedy SOUTH AFICAN INTERNATIONAL TATTOO CONVENTION

MYLES KENNEDY

Myles Kennedy, the singer of the

successful rock band Alter Bridge, will perform an exclusive stripped down set for one night in Cape Town on Tuesday, 6 March, at Grand West, and one night, on Saturday, 10 March, at Time Square in Pretoria. For the first time ever, Myles will perform acoustic versions of songs reflecting the entire repertoire of the magnificent career he’s enjoyed. Myles will give Alter Bridge fans a rare behind-the-scenes look into the music, with stories about the rock anthems that brought him fame along his musical journey.

South African International Tattoo Convention After a successful launch last year, the South African International Tattoo Convention is back with a new venue. This year, 80 of the world’s most respected tattoo artist will be in Cape Town from 23–25 March. Hosted at The Lookout at the V&A Waterfront, the convention aims not only to inspire and educate but also to break the stigma around tattoo culture by showcasing this art form in an accessible and friendly show format. Expect delicious food, craft gin and beer gardens, bars, exhibitions and lifestyle vendors who will bring elements of fashion, art and music into the mix.

My business neighbourhood Hip and healthy Fresch Foods recently relocated to Long Street WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

F

rom superfood lattes to signature smoothie bowls, Fresch Foods is putting the fun back into health food. The new store ties into the hip urban vibe at Boardhub in Long Street, with skateboards and surfboards alongside cafe tables, and you can get your health fix as a takeaway or relax in store over your lunchtime wrap and berry smoothie. Founder, Adam Reilly, tells us all about it. Q: How did your business start? A: My business started from a desire to blend healthy eating with affordability, accessibility and convenience. I was travelling on vacation in Indonesia and came across these smoothie bowls way before they made it onto every Instagram feed. We started in 2015 with pop-up market stalls and then opened our first cafe in Muizenberg. We’ve now relocated to our cool new space in Long

Street. We aim to introduce the fun side to clean eating and healthy living, using locally sourced produce – free of GMOs and preservatives – and plenty of nutrient-packed superfoods. What drives and inspires us at Fresch Foods is putting a smile on our patrons’ faces by producing a product that will not only taste good, but also make them feel great, without the hefty price tag. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: The CBD is a high-density area, with a wide consumer audience, from corporate offices to residential, and an influx of tourists in the summer months. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We have a dedicated cafe space inside Boardhub, the urban surf and skate store. I’ve known the owners for a long time. They were looking to introduce a food and coffee offering to enhance the consumer experience in their shop and we were looking for premises in town, so it was the perfect match. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Besides the advantages of the location and foot traffic it attracts, we enjoy the shared synergy with Boardhub. Both our brands are based on a healthy lifestyle that’s fun and easy-going. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Widow Maker Saloon and Barber and the Cat and Moose Backpackers.

Q: What are the sale/rental prices like in this area? A: Rentals are generally high in the CBD. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: Currently about 30 to 50 people per day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We plan on focusing on organic growth now and continuing to increase store sales and UberEats orders. We would like to open two beachfront stores in the future, as our brand has proved successful in the past in beachfront locations. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, we sell through UberEats. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our most popular items are our smoothies and smoothie bowls, which use a variety of superfood ingredients, from internationally trending acai berries and chia seeds, to cacao nibs and buchu water. Our customers also like that we’re as sustainable as possible – using biodegradable packaging – and compost all our food waste.

ranschhoek may be a world-renowned gourmet destination with most of the Cape’s top restaurants – the influence of its original French settlers enduring in names, wines

and food – but underneath the sophisticated surface, it’s at heart a close-knit village community. “I love the village life; it’s a sense of family,” says chef Vanie Padayachee

of Marigold, who fell in love with Franschhoek when she first came to work at Le Quartier Francais in 1996. “The people in the village are more my family than my real family!” Hospitality, along with agriculture, is the backbone of the village’s economy. Its year-round festivals and reputation for luxury weekend getaways ensure that the boutique hotels and guesthouses have a constant flow of visitors sharing that welcoming village vibe.

Property

Many visitors never want to leave and some end up investing in property here, so the residents are a cosmopolitan bunch. “The town has the perfect mix of country and cosmopolitan, the land is plentiful and the aesthetic has been maintained in the village, so there’s something for everyone,” says blogger Hospitality Hedonist aka Llewellyn Lambert.

There’s constantly something new in Franschhoek, a challenge to improve the hospitality we offer as a village. We’re a community first and an industry second. Whether it’s helping fight raging fires or trying the newest vintage, there’s a true sense of ubuntu here.

From upmarket security estates on working farms such as La Petite Provence, Domaine des Anges and Val de Vie further down the valley, to historic houses with gardens in the village itself, or even small farms, there’s a wide choice for those at the upper end of the market and constant demand from South Africans escaping

Llewellyn has seen substantial investment in the hospitality industry in the last eight years. “From having comfortable wine country accommodation, Franschhoek has evolved into an eclectic mix of small owner-run B&Bs, boutique wineries such as Dieu Donne, Lynx and Eikehof and incredibly chic high-end luxe accommodation like Leeu Collection,” he says. And in the current water crisis, Franschhoek is faring better than most, with many farms and guesthouses having their own boreholes, fresh mountain springs close by and a mountain stream running through the village.

Schooling

Just outside Franschhoek, Bridge House School ranks among the Western Cape’s top private schools, with a reputation for innovative, forwardthinking education, and attracts pupils from all over the country. All the pleasures that make Franschhoek such an attractive destination for visitors make it a joy for residents year-round, whether it’s lazy lunches at one of the wine estates, foraging for mushrooms, tasting the first wines of the harvest, or just enjoying the views. An active outdoor lifestyle is literally on residents’ doorstep – within a few minutes you can be mountain biking or walking in Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, horse riding, hiking or cycling. There’s a bowling club, a tennis club, a health club and a gym. Franschhoek is renowned for its fine dining restaurants, but it also has good cafes and casual eateries. Llewellyn’s favourites include Big Dog Cafe, Terbodore Coffee, Eikehof for cheese-boards and simple family hospitality, Leopards Leap for lunches on the lawn, breakfast at Boschendal and lunch at La Paris. Weekends bring a procession of happenings. From the major festivals, including Bastille Day, the Franschhoek Literary Festival, Uncorked and the Cap Classique and Champagne Festival to smaller harvest festivals and the regular Saturday markets, there’s always something to look forward to on the calendar.
