BLACC Fest X Langa | bit.ly/2DLtsXC

Sip and a swirl in Langa The vineyards come to the vibey streets of Langa this month, with the launch of the BLACC Fest X Langa WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

Viva la art! I

had the pleasure of spending what was probably the hottest day of the year in Franschhoek last Saturday for the Art Franschhoek Festival. Taking place until 25 November in and around the picturesque town, art lovers have the opportunity to gallery hop from one participating gallery to the next. Starting at the Pierneef Gallery at La Motte wine estate and ending at The Boutique Gallery, you have your pick of 19 others in between.

The cream of the crop

Expect works from renowned artists like Strijdom van der Merwe, Cecil Skotnes (as well as his daughter, Pippa), Joshua Miles, sculptor Bruce Little, Walter Battiss, Irma Stern and a host of local artists. One of my favourites was the brightly coloured embroidery art by Lerato Motau at Art in the Yard, but there really is so much on offer that you simply have to spend at least a morning experiencing offerings from some of our country’s top artists. The galleries that have opened their doors to the public for the event are: 1. La Motte Museum (Pierneef Gallery) 2. The Gallery at Grande Provence 3. Leeu Estates 4. Franschhoek Cellar 5. Oink at Farm Sanctuary SA 6. The Blue Lion Gallery at Artemis 7. Sharon Maytham 8. Makiwa Gallery 9. The Ceramics Gallery 10. Orgari by Heidi Steck 11. NG Church 12. Gerart Exclusive Art Gallery 13. Eat, drink and be merry

And of course, no visit to the Winelands would be complete without at least one wine tasting and a lazy lunch under the trees at one of the many wine farms in the area – like the stunning La Motte. Here a tasting will cost you R60 – add R30 if you want to taste their MCC, and another R80 for the Hanneli R, a blend inspired by La Motte’s owner. At R1,200 a bottle, I highly recommend paying that bit extra to experience a few sips of what I can only call a revelation.

ince its formation in 2016, the Black Cellar Club (BLACC) has devoted enormous amounts of time and energy to spreading the word on South African wine. Through tastings, tours and vineyard visits, this collection of local sommeliers, wine stewards and wine lovers have made it their mission to broaden the appeal of the fruits of the vine. “The essence of BLACC is to bring South African wines to the greater population of African people who have yet to fully embrace the wine industry, while also encouraging the wine industry to embrace this influential demographic,” explains co-founder Aubrey Ngcungama. “Through the club’s sommeliers and wine stewards, hospitality workforce and influencers, BLACC has journeyed two short years

to become known in the country’s corporate boardrooms and beyond.”

attendance, flying the flag for the worldclass brandies produced by local cellars.

This month sees them take that message to the streets of Cape Town, with the inaugural BLACC Fest X Langa, a premium wine and spirits festival, that will liven up the Guga S’thebe Arts & Culture Centre in Langa.

It’s not only about the tipple though. There’ll be plenty of good food on offer thanks to the Boulevard 82 food truck, as well as local chef Ntlalo Jordan. Jordan has cooked in kitchens across the world, and will be bringing those homegrown and global influences to bear at Jordan’s Way of Cooking.

An array of leading local cellars – from Steenberg Vineyards to Jordan and Zandvliet – will be pouring, while Graham Beck will showcase their portfolio of award-winning bubblies. Two boutique producers worth seeking out come courtesy of two of BLACC’s leading members: Mosi Wines by La Colombe sommelier Joseph Dhafana, and Kumusha Wines by The Test Kitchen’s Tinashe Nyamudoka. The South African Brandy Foundation will also be in

BLACC Fest X Langa takes place at the Guga S’thebe Arts & Culture Centre (King Lalabelela Street, Langa) on Saturday, 10 November from 11.30am to 6pm, and Sunday, 11 November from 11.30am to 5pm. Tickets (R220 per person per day) are available via Quicket. No under 18s will be allowed. Ticket price includes a souvenir BLACC wine glass and 10 tasting coupons.

Lunch was a relaxed affair ordering from Pierneef à La Motte’s garden menu, where it’s all about sharing and mixing flavours. Apart from the delicious breads, cheeses and cured meats, the simple but oh-sodelicious courgette, patty pan, smoked almonds, and Langbaken Williston cheese salad is a must. And of course, their famed coconut cake. Words cannot describe the deliciousness that is that dessert. It’s probably the best thing I’ve ever tasted. All in all a fantastic day out for two very tired parents of two small kids. Thank you, Franschhoek, what a treat!

Gifts galore Our two top picks of festive markets for those extra-special Christmas gifts WORDS: BELINDA MOUNTAIN

T

here’s tinsel in the shops and mince pies on the shelves, so it’s that time of the year when your thoughts are possibly turning to buying gifts for the special people in your life. Luckily, there are a multitude of markets selling beautifully crafted and locally made goodies − and we’ve profiled two of the best.

Fishing for compliments Introducing Riva, an Italian seafood restaurant in De Waterkant WORDS AND IMAGES: KIT HEATHCOCK

F

or a port city with beaches and ocean its life blood, Cape Town has surprisingly few specialist seafood restaurants. When Italian chefs and childhood friends Nicoló Rovarini and Federico Rocca, travelled here two years ago, they were wowed by the vibrant and varied food scene, but saw a gap for a typical Italian seafood restaurant. Having cooked a series of pop-up events, including a risotto menu with Giorgio Nava at 95 Keerom, they finally found their new home in a red-brick heritage building on Napier Street, De Waterkant. Riva’s high ceilings, tall windows and huge old fireplace, immediately give a feel of stepping back in time, the whitewashed wood tables, stripes of ocean blues, and rustic decor reminiscent of seaside smalltown Italy.

“What we’re doing here is using beautiful local produce with an Italian touch,” says Nico. “Italian cooking is 80% about finding the best ingredients.” They were excited to discover the Abalobi small-scale fishers programme, which they use as often as possible. “Wow, it’s super fresh and high quality.” Tasting my way through the antipasti, it’s easy to see that this is where the two chefs exercise their creativity. Staying true to the Italian philosophy of letting the ingredients speak for themselves, they play a little here. A bowl of creamy stracciatella mozzarella held perfect cubes of Norwegian salmon marinated in lemon and beetroot with a touch of rosemary. Marinated Saldanha mussels topped with light and crunchy slices of polenta with a hint of paprika, and the yellowfin tuna tartare featured black olives and thinly sliced radishes sprinkled with pine nuts. Fresh pasta is made in-house daily for dishes such as pumpkin ravioli, tagliatelle al pomodoro, rigatoni with roasted octopus and fresh tomatoes. And the home-made potato gnocchi are next on my list to try, currently served with Napolitana sauce, capers and scallops, although this may change with the forthcoming new summer menu. Mains keep things simple to showcase the fish at its best, grilled with olive oil and lemon, or as a fritto misto with tartare sauce, with the chalkboard menu featuring the latest catch. And true to Italian form, they have perfected their tiramisu, using Fede’s mom’s recipe, which has the perfect balance of creamy mascarpone, cocoa and coffee-soaked sponge.

On until 4 November (pop in today!), this year Kamers is hosted at the beautiful Blaauwklippen Vineyards between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. With almost 180 makers on show, what’s special about this market, according to owner Magdel Kemp, is the curation of the selection. “We receive about 650 applications annually and we go out and source the best of the best.” Shop local fashion, jewellery, homeware, decor and lifestyle products, while your kids try out the special mountain bike track. This year, every visitor will receive a Consol glass bottle to refill with purified drinking water, in a bid to reduce single plastic use and water wastage. Most goods at the show are not items you’d find in the marketplace, and you’ll be supporting talented local artisans. Magdel says this year she’ll be buying “handmade leather shoes from Kaali, a unique dress from Michele Ludek, wine from Blaauwklippen, and something pretty for the kids from Eco Punk”.

Constantia Gift Fair

On from 7 to 11 November, this perennially popular market held in the Constantia Valley at Sarda (SA Riding for the Disabled Association), is all about beautiful views, a wonderful shopping experience, and a vibey and happy atmosphere. A percentage of your entrance fee will go to Sarda, and you can browse from 170 exhibitors selling unique products including plants, toys, fashion, children’s products (ranging from babies to teens), deli goodies and other homeware items. Owner Carryn Wiltshire says they’re expecting 1,000 people on the Friday night who will come to listen to live band Newton & Co as they sample craft beer and awardwinning wines from the Constantia Wine Route, while having their kids entertained. “We’re also looking forward to profiling musician Leigh Hondy on Saturday and Sunday, who we’ve heard great things about,” ends Carryn.

This year, every visitor will also receive a Consol glass bottle to refill with purified drinking water, in a bid to reduce single plastic use and water wastage MAGDEL KEMP, KAMERS

My business neighbourhood Sweet Cillie’s Cakery and Deli Shoppe bakes up a storm in Tokai WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

L

uscious baked cheesecakes and tempting cakes are Cilla de Jonge’s stock in trade at Sweet Cillie’s Cakery, which opened in Tokai last year. She serves them up with Terbodore coffee or Carmien teas, alongside a deli lunch menu of home-made pies, wraps, curries and salads. Cilla tells us more.

Q: How did your business start? A: I’d been living and working in America for several years with my husband. On returning home, I opened a bakery in Fish Hoek and started baking cakes and cheesecakes. My baking style is more American than fine French, with lashings of fresh farm butter, eggs and cream, like my grandmother used to use. When we moved to Stellenbosch, I closed the shop and baked instead for the Blaauwklippen and Lourensford markets, still delivering cakes to my Fish Hoek customers. Last year I was ready for a permanent base again and opened a new Sweet Cillie’s Cakery in Tokai. My vision was for a welcoming venue where moms can come and relax while

the kids play or do homework, where friends can catch up, where small business owners can unwind and let their creative juices flow or just check their emails in a warm and happy space – all accompanied by delicious baked treats and a great cup of coffee or tea. I bake all the cakes; Mickey makes all the pies and quiches. Nyasha makes all the coffee. Everything gets made right here, by us, every day. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: It’s a great location opposite the Blue Route Mall, a light and bright space situated on a busy road and it’s a visible corner store. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was very lucky to get the space, my sister drove past and saw the opportunity. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s visible and easily accessible with parking. It was a bed shop previously, so we had to fit it from scratch. The kitchen is open style, so we didn’t have to build walls or anything crazy. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Prices are high in this area because of its popularity. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Our shop neighbours are a health shop, a barber, a video shop and the Italian Kitchen. In the area

we have Kirstenhof, a great school, and a friendly and helpful community. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: T he number of customers can differ vastly, but never less than 50 people per day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We still get so many people from Fish Hoek ordering their cakes from us and now we have this new community supporting us, so in the near future we’ll need help in the baking and decorating department. I would love to add to our already great female team. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Just our Facebook page (@sweetcilliescakery) and a website. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We’re renowned for our baked cheesecakes, with varieties such as New York style, red velvet, carrot and brownie being some of our most popular – we offer 12 different varieties!

Langebaan estate launches Phase 1

T

he launch of Phase 1 of The Village at Langebaan Country Estate, a retirement and lifestyle development on the West Coast, was announced at a pre-launch event on 25 and 26 October. People who had registered their interest were invited to the event where they were able to pre-book their unit at The Village, which is due to begin construction early next year. After years of plotting and planning, studying the changing landscape of retirement, and consulting experts in the field around active retirement, special needs and frail care, the group has planned The Village with the best interests of their residents in mind. The Village is not your typical retirement village but rather a vibrant community offering, with all the established comforts, facilities and activities within the 450ha Langebaan Country Estate. Craig Scott, CEO, The Village, says, “We wanted to create a place where lifestyle meets secure, stylish, affordable living in a dynamic community that combines residential, recreational and health care facilities so you can really enjoy the best years of your life.” The Village will offer spacious, northfacing home types, from one- and

two-bedroom courtyard suites, to two- and three-bedroom freestanding life right cottages, all with optional care packages. A levy stabilisation fund will further secure your lifestyle investment and peace of mind. Facilities and services at The Village will include a private clubhouse with restaurant, bar and lounge, hairdresser, laundry, library, coffee shop and function room, frail care, home care, assisted living, security, landscaping, exclusive-use gardens, maintenance and cleaning services, and a transport shuttle. Residents will have access to the Langebaan Country Estate’s many sport and leisure facilities which include an 18-hole Black Knight Design golf course, driving range, mashie course, two outdoor swimming pools, bowls club, tennis courts and extensive running and cycling paths. “You have the right to select the type of lifestyle you want – you need a place to enjoy life, play golf, take up bowls, go to the gym when you want to, have the kids over for a weekend, go for a walk, a run or take a bike ride in a safe environment, enjoy your pets, pop down to the restaurant for a bite to eat and, most importantly, feel part of a community. This is that place,” adds Scott.

T

he AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation took place on 26 October at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) in Cape Town. The shortlisted projects provided a host of new insights into how great architecture or social design can be produced without compromising sustainability. Says Maryke Cronje, 2018 president, South African Institute of Architecture (SAIA,) and convenor of the 2017/18 award, “We live in a rapidly transforming world, and this has become evident through the evolution of entries received. In 2009 when the award programme was conceived, sustainability still seemed like an architectural style. Today, no development can happen without it.” The 14 shortlisted projects across four categories – sustainable architecture, research in sustainability, sustainable products and technology, and sustainable social programmes – were selected following a rigorous screening process which included assessments and on-site inspections by a six-member adjudication panel. Entries were required to demonstrate sound sustainable practices that respond to innovative architectural and design thinking in the field of sustainability, that complied to the criteria of harmonisation, people upliftment, evolutionary paradigm and placemaking performance. The AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation acknowledges excellence in best practice and innovation in sustainable architecture, recognising the contributions that bring sustainable innovation to human living environments through integrated approaches to communities,

planning, architecture, design, building practice and technology. The shortlisted projects in each of the categories were: Sustainable architecture: • Northcliff House by Architecture for a Change (A4aC) • Khayelitsha Shared Services Office Building by ACG Architects and Development Planners/ Ngonyama Okpanum Associates • House Burnett Prinsloo by Robert de Jager, architect • Fulham Heights by Local Studio (Pty) Ltd • House Gardiner by Simply Sustainable • RBDIZ Entrance Gate by Jeremy Steere, architect • Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre by Lewis Levin, architect Research in sustainability: • A framework for a green infrastructure planning approach in the Gauteng City-Region by Gauteng City-Region Observatory Sustainable products & technology: • Rambrick by Use It Waste Beneficiation (RF) NPC • hearScreen by hearX Group Sustainable social programmes: • Malawi Church by A4aC Architects • Silindokuhle Preschool by Collectif saga • The Wilds – revitalising a forgotten public space by James Delaney • Table House by Noero Architects/Rainer Hehl “Sustainability is not only about technology, but also about a whole new way of life, of relating to oneself, other people and the environment. The shortlisted projects show how a more thoughtful and integrated approach to design can make the world a better place,” said one of the adjudicators in summing up the high quality of the entries.

Pay off your home loan faster Sounds like a pipe dream? You’ll be surprised. WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK

I

f you pay off your home loan early, you save on compound interest, says bond originators ooba’s Rhys Dyer. “Look at a R1m bond paid over 20 years at a 10% interest rate – your instalment would be R9,650 per month. The total cost of that R1m loan (interest and capital) over the 20-year period would be R2,316,052.” He also pointed out that a 20-year repayment term compared to a 30-year one, means you’re saving R843 206, with an increased monthly payment of R874. When you add the interest to the original house price, you’re paying a great deal more than you intended to, says Simon Brown of Just One Lap. “The easiest way to pay as close as possible to the original price is to pay back more than the minimum amount the bank expects.”

Pay it off in seven years

Yes, you need extra cash every month, but not nearly as much as you’d think. Let’s say you have a 20-year home loan. You might assume that to pay it off in seven years, you’re going to have to make up roughly two thirds of the time by paying an additional two thirds more each month. That’s not how compound interest works.

Five easy steps

From the first instalment of the first year, pay an extra 10%. If your instalment is R10,000 a month, pay R11,000 a month for a year. At the end of that first year, you’ve reduced your home loan down to 15 years. Five years saved. Let’s assume your salary increase is 6%. Increase the R11,000 bond repayment by 6%. Note – you don’t pay your 6% salary increase into your home loan, you only pay 6% of your

revised bond repayment of R11,000 (R720). Do this annually and your home loan is down to 10 years. You have halved your bond repayment period. Pay your home loan before the 1st, 2nd or 5th of the month. If you get paid on the 25th, pay it then. This will bring it down to seven to eight years. It’s said that each of us should have three to six months’ living expenses tucked away for a rainy day. If you do, put it into your home loan rather than into a 32-day call account or fixed deposit – this way, you’re effectively earning that interest rate on that money. If you get a 13th cheque, treat it as another month’s salary. If you can put the entire cheque into your home loan, do it, but if not, pay in the same percentage you’ve been paying for the past 12 months.

When is paying it off not the wisest decision?

Dyer says, “Usually, a home loan is the cheapest form of credit, so if you have other debt such as car finance, credit cards etc, you would incur a greater interest saving by paying off those more expensive lines of credit.” He adds, “Additionally, if you’re an investor and are renting out the property, you could save on tax as your bond instalment is tax deductible. Should you need to raise finance in the future against the property, you’ll be incurring bond registration and other finance-related costs once again if you decide to pay off your loan and cancel the bond. The funds would not be immediately accessible and the bank may also, second time around, not approve the same loan facility at the same attractive interest rate that you enjoyed on your original home loan.”

Oranjezicht Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: NATASHA LASSEN & GOOGLE MAPS *Map not to scale

Oranjezicht is a stone’s throw from buzzing Kloof Street and Bree Street, yet you don’t feel like you’re living in town, with lots of parks and open green spaces. There’s a great mix of people, mostly professionals and young families. JACQUI MCARTHUR, RESIDENT

B

acked by wild mountain slopes and looking out over the buzzing city centre below, Oranjezicht is a cosmopolitan neighbourhood that appeals to families and professionals of all ages. Steep but quiet residential streets have little through traffic – apart from the daily school runs – and level out lower down towards Gardens Shopping Centre and De Waal Park. The CBD is within walking distance via a picturesque stroll through the Company’s Gardens, while vibey Kloof Street is even closer, and the My CiTi bus connects residents with the rest of the city if you prefer not to drive. “In beautiful and windy Oranjezicht, you are close to the city, but surrounded by nature,” says one resident, “close to the mountain and to the sea.” A short drive takes you over Kloof Nek to Camps Bay, down to the Sea Point promenade or the V&A Waterfront, so you have the best of Cape Town on your doorstep.

Property

Victorian and Edwardian gems line the streets of Oranjezicht, with gardens and street trees adding several shades of green to the already stunning views over the harbour, Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. “Most of the homes are old dames which have been lovingly restored,” says Jacqui McArthur, interior stylist and lifestyle blogger, who moved to Oranjezicht four years ago. “People have kept the original features – think high ceilings and sash windows – and the property sizes tend to be bigger in Oranjezicht that in other parts of the City Bowl.” Apartment buildings cater to young professionals and a number of small gated developments are discretely tucked among the older properties. The suburb shares an active neighbourhood watch with adjacent Higgovale, along with other initiatives such as the Oranjezicht City Farm and Friends of De Waal Park, which connect the local community across the City Bowl suburbs.

Schooling

Depending on where you live in Oranjezicht – and on your hill-climbing stamina – you might be within walking distance of St Cyprians, Herzlia, or Jan van Riebeeck High School, as well as several pre-schools, and the German International School is close by in Tamboerskloof. “We’re lucky to live a three-minute drive from St Cyprians,” says Jacqui. “The school is built on beautiful grounds at the base of Table Mountain, with the most beautiful chapel that gives you a sense of the school’s history.” Other families find that it’s an easy school run against the traffic to the renowned Southern Suburbs schools in Newlands and Rondebosch.

Explore

Another aspect of Oranjezicht living that appeals to families, is all the green spaces. “Oranjezicht has wonderful parks,” says Jacqui. “De Waal park is great for the kids and if you’ve got pets, this is the place for you. Dogs run wild off their leashes and are totally exhausted after a few minutes. Deer Park is a fenced-in park, so it’s super pet and child friendly, and it has a pretty cool cafe too.” A brand-new running track and outdoor gym has just been completed in the lower section of De Waal Park and another favourite local running route is around the Molteno Reservoir above, a perfect flat loop with fabulous views over the city. Trail runners, hikers and mountain bikers can take to the mountain following trails from Deer Park or the top of Molteno Road, connecting with Tafelberg Road and the rest of the mountain. The Gardens Centre is a treasure trove of boutiques and foodie delights, as well as everyday shopping and services, while nearby Kloof Street overflows with trendy restaurants and shops, so that even without venturing further into the CBD residents have everything they need both day and night.
