S

ince the first “burnt wine” was distilled on a ship off Cape Town in 1672, local producers have proven a dab hand at crafting world-class brandies. At two spirits competitions held in London recently, local distilleries proved that South African brandies stand head and shoulders above French cognac. Van Ryn’s 12-Year-Old was the brandy flying the South African flag at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), bagging the trophy for Best Worldwide Brandy for the fifth time in 12 years.

Chefs who Share C

hefs who Share – The ART of Giving is one of the most thoughtful and inspiring projects I’ve ever come across. Started by the enigmatic Barbara Lenhard and now in its fourth year, the project raises funds to uplift communities. The event – one of the greatest culinary and art lifestyle events – will this time take place in Joburg this month. Among the many platforms is the Chefs who Share – Young Chef Award, which is a search for the most promising and talented local chef. The final seven young chefs (from some of the country’s top restaurants and hotels) have been selected. Each chef, between the ages of 18 and 29, had to submit a canape creation, which was judged by industry experts. The young chefs in the final are: Conrad van den Heever, senior sous chef from Greenhouse-Cellars Hohenort; Anand Bhana, junior sous chef from Hartford House; Blaine Robert Coetzer, senior chef de partie at Leeu Estate; David Graham-Parker, junior chef de partie at Level Four; Leeandra Govender, junior sous pastry chef at Roots; Elize Benson, senior chef de partie at Roots; and Anthonie James van Zyl, commis chef at Tokara. These young chefs will get an incredible opportunity to work alongside 14 of their national and

international culinary heroes – including Michelin-starred Vineet Bhatia from London, Vincent Rodier from Mauritius, and chef Reto Mathis from Switzerland – at the Grand Gala on 24 September in the Johannesburg City Hall. The winner will be announced at the gala and, besides local recognition, will win a trip to Europe to work in a Michelin-star restaurant and visit the headquarters of Moët & Chandon in Épernay, France, to experience the culinary and oenological highlights of Champagne. Now that’s a once in a lifetime experience! Chefs who Share is a world-class initiative that exemplifies the true meaning of sharing while supporting local talent and encouraging social entrepreneurship.

Golden gongs for SA brandy At two recent international competitions South African brandies once again put French cognacs in their place WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED

EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELF:

“It is a huge honour for any brandy distillery to be awarded a trophy at the IWSC,” says Marlene Bester, master distiller at the historic Van Ryn’s distillery on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. The IWSC has been running for 47 years, and draws hundreds of entries from nearly 90 countries worldwide. Judges praised the Van Ryn’s 12-Year-Old for its “standout nose packed with ripe and dried fruit”, and a complex floral palate with a lengthy finish. Definitely not a brandy to be mixed with cola. “Every year I’m more impressed with the quality leap SA brandies make above others,” says Cape wine master Dr Winifred Bowman, one of the judges at the IWSC. “It also amazes and continues to impress the other international judges from France, Germany, USA, Switzerland and the UK.” And it wasn’t only the 12-Year-Old that grabbed the judges’ attention. The Van Ryn’s 15-Year-Old Fine Cask Reserve and 20-Year-Old Collector’s Reserve were both awarded gold medals by the IWSC judges, alongside Gold Outstanding awards for the Oude Meester Demant and Oude Meester Reserve and Richelieu 10-Year-Old. At the competing International Spirits Challenge (ISC) it was the turn of KWV to bring home the medals, with the Paarl producer hailed as World’s Best Brandy/ Cognac Producer for the second year running – the only producer ever to win the title twice. What’s more, when KWV took the accolade in 2015 it was the first time in the 20-year history of the competition that a brandy, not a cognac, producer had won the title. “To win this for a second time, beating the best Cognac producers, is a huge accolade,” says KWV master distiller Pieter de Bod. “It also shows that South African potstill brandies are as good as, and even better than, cognac.”

Chefs who Share chefswhoshare.com

De Bod had four other reasons to celebrate in London. In addition to the top prize, KWV took home gold medals for its KWV 20, KWV 15, KWV Imoya, and KWV Laborie Alambic brandies.

Heavenly dining Dinner at Little Saint on upper Bree Street is all about farm-to-table freshness WORDS & IMAGE: KIT HEATHCOCK

H

idden away at the top of Bree Street alongside Culture Club and Bacon on Bree, Little Saint is a welcoming and intimate dinner venue with one wall lined with a functional vertical garden supplying herbs and leaves to the kitchen, and the other stripped back to its 200-year-old stone and hung with paintings to make it feel like an extension of the owners’ home. Chef Santi Louzán grew up in Galicia, northwest Spain. His family were farmers and fishermen. The food they ate was local, fresh and pesticide-free – real food. It’s that ethos he aims to recapture at Little Saint, growing relationships with small local suppliers (Harvest of Hope and Usana among them) and using the skills accumulated over 15 years

working at an impressive array of UK restaurants and earning Michelin stars. The result is dishes that are deceptively simple, full of fresh flavours and beautifully plated. The catalyst that brought him and his South African wife, Dominique, to Cape Town last year, was his brush with diabetes, brought on by the stress and unhealthy lifestyle of building up a London estate agency with his brother. Food healed him and reawakened his creativity as a chef, inspiring a vision of what he wanted in his own restaurant. “It’s all about clean, real food. We’re not about one particular diet, Banting or Paleo, we’re a mixture. I focus on quality ingredients and use a lot of good fats.”

The short chalkboard menu changes often, reflecting the seasons. After sipping a teacup of delicate chicken consomme as an amuse-bouche, my starter is a really beautiful winter salad: rolls of courgettes with airdried ham, fresh micro leaves, a base of pumpkin purée and nut dressing adding warmth to subtle flavours. In contrast, the sweet potato patatas bravas with chorizo and garlic mayo is a taste explosion – comfort food packing an unapologetic punch. Our mains of incredibly tender fillet steak set off by tapenade and a Béarnaise, and crispy crackling on triple-cooked pork belly with a bed of perfectly simple leeks and carrots, encapsulates Santi’s philosophy with every delicious mouthful. This is food that remembers where it came from, and tastes superbly of what it is.

W

hile the wintry wind blows the last leaves off trees and fresh spring blossoms begin to bloom, I’m finally able to shake off the last bit of chill and be taken up in a whirlwind of festivities. Not that I’ve been sitting around the house in fluffy socks waiting for the storm to break, but I’m ready to see some faces, clink my glass and perhaps watch some theatre. Enter Cape Town Fringe Festival, the city’s foremost, cutting-edge theatre and music festival which runs from 22 September to 8 October. With guest artistic director Rob Murray leading the team, the festival promises to push boundaries once again. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the exciting line-up. The variety of visual and physical theatre, music and dance is diverse, broad and progressive.

What to see

Songs for Khwezi, which was written and performed prior to the emergence of #rememberkhwezi protests in the media, is a choreopoem which interrogates power and the state as it relates to sexual violence against women.

Earning a Fleur du Cap nomination in 2016, Klara van Wyk captures the angst and confusion of being a modern teenager while being Afrikaans in an Anglophile high school, in Francesco Nassimbeni’s comedy You Suck and Other Inescapable Truths. This

production was a hit at the National Arts Festival and received rave reviews. The much-loved children’s picture book The Gruffalo – written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, and which was adapted into the West End hit musical by Tall Stories – is something for kids and adults alike to enjoy. The production will be hitting our shores with an original adaption by the National Arts Festival with an all-Grahamstown cast. Rumour has it that some local flavour has been added to the dialogue and songs.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A FRINGE FESTIVAL? The concept of Fringe came about just after World War II in Edinburgh, when a group of independent artists felt excluded from the Edinburgh Festival. They decided to start their own festival, which today is the world’s largest arts festival. This is the ethos of the Fringe Festival: to be inclusive and share art in its many forms.

My business neighbourhood Wiid Design chose Observatory, with its central location and creative vibe, for its new studio, workshop and showroom WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

A

ward-winning designer, Laurie Wiid van Heerden, creates unique furniture and lighting products with a pared-down aesthetic, plus bespoke projects and collaborations. He tells us about Wiid Design’s base in Observatory. Q: H ow did your business start? A: I started studying industrial design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in 2007, but decided to venture more into the practical side. I was employed by Bronze Age Art Foundry and worked with some of my creative heroes including Otto du Plessis, Cecil and Boyd, William Kentridge and Wim Botha. After gaining ample practical experience in the field of design and manufacturing, and assisting artist Wim Botha for almost three years, Wiid Design took shape as a business in 2010. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: E ver since I moved to Cape Town, Observatory has been my home.

Neighbourhood I love the youthful vibe, creatives and fellow designers. It was also very important to be close to the CBD, access roads and especially Paarden Eiland where some of our key manufacturers and suppliers are located. Q: H ow did you find your premises? A: It was quite an intense process. We were searching for premises to buy and most buildings were either overpriced or not central. Eventually we compromised and were about to sign a lease on a sizeable space in Woodstock, even though my gut told me that it was not necessarily the right space. The weekend before signing, I spotted a building in Baker Street that was exactly what I was looking for – large roller door, freestanding, secure, and relatively new, with ample off-street parking. Initially the owners declined our offers, but after lengthy negotiation we obtained the building. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Observatory Industrial Park, a labelling company, design agencies, printing companies, and more. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: My vision was very clear – a clean, contemporary space, where we can showcase work in a gallery-like environment, photograph products, host openings and exclusive viewings. An integrated space with beautiful offices for meetings and design, and a workshop to

manufacture, quality-check, crate and load products. We spent 10 hectic months renovating the building to realise that vision and now the space meets all our practical requirements. Q: What are the shop rental prices like in this area? A: T he area is mixed zoned, with residential, commercial and industrial spaces. On average, the going rate per square meter is between R50 and R70, depending on location/parking and finishing. Q: What is your shop foot traffic? A: My studio is private and we prefer potential clients to make an appointment to visit. Q: D o you have any expansion plans? A: We may open a shared showroom space in Joburg in the future, for clients to view my work. Q: D o you operate online as well? A: I have a website with a catalogue of my work. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: My Soma planters, the Corkabitation collection, solid cork furniture and lighting products, and our new cork and steel bar stools.

In addition, the Old Mutual Savings and Investment Monitor 2016 found that only 20% of single mothers surveyed feel financially secure. It also found that one-third of single mothers are financially supporting their parents or other family members in addition to looking after their own children. Together with estimates that around half of single mothers receive no financial support, this indicates how vulnerable this group is in South Africa. While this is a severe situation, there are steps that any single mother can take to help to secure a better financial future:

Make sure you have life insurance and that your estate planning is in order so that your children will be looked after if the worst were to happen. It’s a difficult conversation, but make sure that your children’s nominated guardians know what will happen if you pass away and how you have provided for them. In all of this, don’t be afraid to ask for help. A qualified financial adviser who can guide you through what you need to do and help you to make the right investment choices, can be an invaluable support.

About the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

T

he palm-tree lined beach frequented by jet-setting summer visitors has earned Camps Bay its reputation as the Saint Tropez of South Africa. Certainly the trendy beach cafes are buzzing with the glitterati throughout the season, with fashion shoots an everyday sight on the white sandy beach. But all the glamour co-exists happily with a family-friendly community, modern architect-designed gems and luxury apartments sitting alongside comfortable family homes. The beach is part of everyday life – surfing after work, walking and playing with kids – and secluded Glen Beach is the residents’ choice in the busy summer months, being less windy and away from the tourist bustle. Hiking trails on Table Mountain or up Lion’s Head behind Camps Bay are perfect for getting into nature on the weekends, and the sunset views are legendary whether you’re hiking, hanging out on the beach or relaxing over sundowners at the glamorous Leopard Bar terrace at Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa.

Camps Bay High School’s reputation attracts kids from all along the Atlantic Seaboard, Hout Bay International School is a short drive away, plus the whole of the City Bowl is within easy reach for more schooling options.

THINGS TO DO:

“Camps Bay is heaven when it comes to children’s facilities,” says resident Verena Neumayr-Howes. “There is a lovely park behind The Bay Hotel, a local library that offers free reading sessions, playgroups and preschools such as Kidz Discovery Kids Club and Kids on the Bay, and Camps Bay Preparatory has a great reputation.” For all the cafe society buzz, Camps Bay is still very much a village, and residents tend to head over Kloof Nek to the CBD or the V&A Waterfront for serious shopping, but they have entertainment on tap at Theatre on the Bay staging musicals, cabaret and both local and international plays. Altogether Camps Bay offers an enviable outdoor lifestyle amid stunning scenery and a naturally glamourous setting.

I love being surrounded by nature and having the beach on our doorstep. To be able to just pop to the beach before bedtime is awesome! Camps Bay is a safe area, generally speaking, and there is a lovely community for children, with tons of things to do. It never gets boring. VERENA NEUMAYR-HOWES, RESIDENT

• Watch a production at Theatre on the Bay. • Hike up Lion’s Head at full moon. • Hike the Pipe Track from Kloof Nek above Camps Bay for stunning views. • Visit secluded Glen Beach for surfing and walks away from the tourist bustle. • Picnic at Oudekraal Beach within Table Mountain National Park. • Enjoy a luxury dinner and movie package at the Twelve Apostles.

Agent commentary Q: Who is buying property in the area? A: Camps Bay ranks as one of the top property locations in the country, not just for locals, but buyers from all over the world. The appeal is across the board, including holiday homes, residential and investment. High demand outweighs supply as buyers from across the globe are streaming here. The entry-level price for the suburb increased from R6,5m for an old freestanding home a year ago to about R8,5m. Even houses priced at R20m are still selling – such is the broad appeal. Aside from local buyers, we continue seeing strong demand from other provinces, especially the Joburg area as well as from the UK and Northern European buyers.

Lyn Pope & Rochelle Serman

Q: What types of properties are available and what can buyers expect to pay? A: Camps Bay has become a trendy, cosmopolitan playground favoured by our international visitors, upcountry buyers and locals looking to live in a seaside community close to the city. Old homes in need of extensive modernisation and redecoration will list from around R9m to R12m. Entry-level apartments, studios and one-bedroom apartments in older but sought-after blocks in the Rontree area will list from R4m to R6m. Luxurious sea view apartments and houses range from R16m to R25m. The Deep Glen area is dominated by larger homes with gardens and tends to attract family buyers, with properties here listing from R20m.

Q: What attracts buyers to Camps Bay? A: Conveniently located only 15 minutes from the City Centre, Camps Bay is magnificently situated on the Atlantic Ocean and overlooked by Lion’s Head and the striking Twelve Apostles. While the rich and famous can be found hanging out at Camps Bay, it is also a wonderful place for families to walk on the crisp white beaches and offers an interesting blend of traditional family suburb and exciting tourist attraction. The beachfront strip offers an assortment of superb restaurants always kept cool by the breeze off the ocean. No wonder so many visitors surrender to the seductive beauty of this scenic suburb and decide to buy property in Camps Bay.
