flavours.” Hake, kingklip, yellowtail, tuna and angelfish are the backbone of the menu, which is printed daily to reflect what’s just come off the boats. A beautiful starter of hake ceviche reveals a well-judged balance between simplicity and creativity: citrus-cured hake rolled around a slice of fresh ginger, fresh herbs, the zest and zing softened by a cream cheese base with spots of squid ink mayo and some sweet potato crisps for contrasting crunch. Much thought has gone into adding local flavour and imaginative vegetable

accompaniments – my kingklip was firm and tender and rested on a bed of braaied corn, the smokiness picked up by a ring of brinjal puree dotted with pesto, and pretty plating adding elegance to the perfectly cooked fish. The seared angelfish comes with chakalaka vegetables, and Saldanha mussels come with a Cape Malay sauce. The restaurant is not too fancy to offer good old-fashioned hake and chips, light and crispy batter and gorgeous double-cooked chips, which you can also order as a side with other mains when chip envy strikes.

here’s a certain way of life to Bakoven in the Atlantic Seaboard. With its sandy beaches, palm trees and beautiful people, you can’t help but feel like you’re on holiday somewhere exotic, no matter what time of the year it is. I was lucky enough to spend a day at the Penthouse 2, complete with five en-suite bedrooms and a gorgeous 8m pool outside. As with all the villas, the Penthouse 2 is within walking distance of the beach as well as the fabulous restaurants and cocktail bars on the strip, making it a perfect getaway destination over the holiday season. The stunning open-plan entertainment area is also ideal for summer days and nights with family and friends. Of course, you can’t really experience The Blue Views Collection way of life without also visiting the luxury South Beach hotel.

South Beach in Camps Bay may be the youngest option in the collection, but it’s in no way inferior. The chic, self-catering hotel combines five-star service and efficient but nonintrusive staff. Tony collaborated with Greg Wright Architects to create a contemporary hotel that pays homage to South Beach in Miami. Standout features for me were the silk-screen works by acclaimed artist (and friend of Tony's) Lionel Smit, which adorn the interior walls and

add a splash of colour, and the iconic works of Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe that feature prominently outside the hotel. While Tony is cryptic on what’s next for The Blue Views Collection, he says, “Maybe something offshore – you’ll have to wait and see.” Offering all the benefits of five-star accommodation while allowing guests the freedom to enjoy the Camps Bay and Bakoven lifestyle, it’s clear to see why The Blue Views Collection is so popular.

A

n industrial building on Salt River’s Spencer Road isn’t a location you’d immediately associate with one of the Cape’s most celebrated winemakers. But Duncan Savage is finally putting down roots in this colourful corner of the city. After 14 vintages at Cape Point Vineyards, Duncan left the estate last year to focus on his own label, Savage Wines. In opening his own cellar Duncan joins just a handful of other urban wineries in Cape Town and has by far the largest city cellar taking grapes from picking crate to cask. “I realised that as we grow we need a home for the brand,” says Duncan of the decision to finally invest in bricks and mortar. “We always said we want to cap our production at 40,000 bottles and this space is exactly right for doing those sorts of volumes.” It’s certainly an impressive facility for an urban winery, with a pressing and fermentation space, barrel-maturation room and a cold room for bottle storage. Visitors will spend most of their time in the barrel room, where towering oak foudres frame a room filled with barrels

of Duncan’s most recent vintages. Castiron pillars and heavy wooden rafters enhance the industrial feel of the space. Like many solo winemakers, Duncan sources grapes from across the Western Cape for his remarkable range of blends. That includes his flagship Savage Red and Savage White, along with a quirky collection of wines inspired by the vineyards and his journeys to find them. “Follow The Line” shows the best of Cinsaut and Syrah from the Swartland, while “Are We There Yet” shows a more elegant side to Touriga Nacional, with grapes sourced from Breede River vineyards. The 2018 harvest will see a new addition to the portfolio with “Thief In The Night”, a Grenache from high-lying vineyards in the Piekenierskloof. “There are so many winemakers looking to get their hands on these vineyards; the name seemed a good fit,” says Duncan with a chuckle. You’ll hear these stories and more at the public tastings, set to be held one evening per month. Tastings will be by reservation only and limited to 12 to 18 guests.

t the Cape’s West Coast, the Marina Village with the brand-new Mykonos Marina Development can be found in the marina of Club Mykonos in Langebaan. The new Mykonos Marina development was architecturally designed by Craft of Architecture and offers 25 luxury apartments. The project was inspired by the village culture of Mykonos where walkways and alleyways bend between private homes and spaces are delineated by courtyards. The uniform white aesthetic allowed the architects to stagger and step

contemporary minimalist volumes with the curve of the marina. The design encompasses a special feature of stable doors which are incorporated into the courtyard design. The Mykonos aesthetic was reinterpreted to produce modernist volumes which still tie into the greater context through unique detailing and attention to the relationship between indooroutdoor and public-private spaces. The apartments range from bachelor units (56m²), to duplexes (105m²) and penthouse units (from 124m² to 164m²).

Price to sell or stay on the market

A

ccording to Steve van Wyk, MD, Seeff Centurion, if you are a seller in most areas in South Africa today, you should price your property to sell if you hope to attract buyer interest, otherwise, your property will sit on the market. Buyers currently have a choice of over 9,000 properties on the market in the Centurion area alone. This, he says, equates to 18 months’ worth of properties that must be sold without any new properties coming onto the market. At the same time, buyer enquiries have almost halved since the start of the year and we’re now in a slower period with activity only really expected to pick up from September onwards. The current recession along with negative sentiment is having an

adverse effect on property sales overall, but Seeff says that there are still plenty of opportunities for sellers. Sellers need to know that they’re now in a buyer’s market and if they’re not serious about selling, they should rather take their property off the market. The latest FNB Property Barometer points to a progressive decline, especially in the Johannesburg/Pretoria areas, insofar as price growth is concerned, while stock levels are rising rapidly. However, Van Wyk says there’ll always be an opportunity for those who are serious about selling. The latest interest rate drop will no doubt encourage more buyers, but Van Wyk says that sellers need to know that today’s buyers are smart; they know exactly what is going on in the market.

oodstock Bakery has been baking traditional loaves in a wood-fired oven since 2013, supplying top restaurants such as The Test Kitchen and selling at artisan markets. Partner, Paul Hartmann, who also owns the SA Chefs Academy, tells us more about the business that he started with Paul Cremer (pictured above) and their move to Salt River. Q: How did your business start? A: Paul Cremer was one of our SA Chefs Academy graduates and we shared an interest in baking. After graduating, he worked at Ile de Pain in Knysna under the tutelage of Markus Farbinger for three years and we talked about opening a bakery together. Finally, the timing was right and we bought a wood-fired oven in Argyle Street, Woodstock. After renovations, we started supplying loaves in April 2013, making our debut at The Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill. We make traditional breads by hand, baking them in a wood-fired Spanish oven with a rotating stone floor of 4m diameter – the only one of its kind in Cape Town.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: A rgyle Street was a little under 100m2 and was bursting at the seams. We now occupy close to 400m2. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Imraan Allie at Spacefinder patiently showed us various spaces until we settled on the Brickworks in Brickfield Road. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he space is on one level and basically a rectangle – that suits our workflow. It’s an old, solid building with thick walls and floors that provide excellent insulation. We were the first to move in while the building was still under renovation and the landlord fitted it to our specific requirements. It’s very centrally located, with quick access to our clients in the city, the Southern Suburbs and the Northern Suburbs. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: T he SA Chefs Academy is right next door. Nomu development kitchen

is upstairs and The Deckle Edge is on the street front. Bootlegger also has a branch in the building. There’s still quite a bit of space available. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Rentals start at R150/m2 with a very generous TI contribution. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: We’re not a traditional shop, but rather a production facility supplying bread to over 100 customers in Cape Town. We have a rack of about 60 “overruns” that the public can buy daily between 7am and 12 noon. We also sell at The Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill and Oranjezicht City Farm Market at Granger Bay every Saturday. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We currently run at about 85% of our capacity, so expansion will only be on our current range of baked goods. It has always been our intention to keep it manageable and authentic, staying true to the traditional baking methods, and making just 800 loaves a day. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: No, but we do supply Ucook and a few online grocery providers. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: S ourdough loaves and our three croissant variations.

ohemian, vibrant and slightly rough around the edges, Observatory has a special place in the hearts of most Capetonians. Some experience it as students, couples and young families see it as an affordable rung on the property ladder, while others stay in the area for life. People are attracted to the area’s proximity to the city centre, with easy access to the N2 and M5; its creative, shabby chic appeal; and its convenience.

The heart of Observatory is its Lower Main Road, where a quirky collection of cafes, shops, pubs, film and design studios, backpackers and small businesses are strung along the whole length from Main Road down to Albert Road. Here you’ll find everything from vintage clothing and vinyl records, to the best South African cheeses, tattoo parlours, organic health shops, live music, bars and cool cafes catering to the diverse community.

“Obs is pretty much central to everything and as the metropole swells it feels less like a ‘burb’ and more like an extension of the city,” says Alida Kannemeyer, owner, Fresh Identity, who lives and works in the area. “The larger appeal of Obs for me is walking to some of my daily routines, like a local Pilates studio and then picking up basic supplies on foot. We can go days without using our car.”

“Obs has historically always had quite an eclectic mix of residents, from students, to working professionals, families and singletons,” says Alida. “The balance has fluctuated over the years, but remains diverse and mercurial.” Even though you’re not yet in the leafy suburbs, you’re never too far from green spaces in Obs. Head to The Wild

Fig Restaurant on the Valkenberg Estate and you could be at a country farmhouse. There’s the Raapenberg Bird Sanctuary down by the river, The River Club with a nine-hole mashie golf course and above Groote Schuur Hospital and De Waal Drive are the slopes of Table Mountain creating a beautiful backdrop to city living. The essence of Observatory has remained unchanged over the years – narrow streets, terraced and semidetached Victorian cottages – but the tide of urban development has finally reached the area. “This year is the first time Obs is undergoing a major facelift with several multistorey developments going up in the neighbourhood,” says Alida. But residents are confident that the neighbourhood’s youthful, creative, all-embracing energy and its unique character and identity will be preserved.
