What used to be dubbed the Wine and Malt Whisky Affair has seen some subtle changes, and this year the popular annual event will shift its focus to replace wine with top-drawer gin to tap into the growing trend towards the spirit once dubbed “mother’s ruin”.

Tulbagh Did you know? Tulbagh was founded about 300 years ago, after a land grant was passed by the Dutch Colonial Government for a relatively equal number of Dutch and Huguenot settlers to settle the area.

“Another evolution is that we’re dropping the word ‘malt’ from the name,” says Wade Bales. “Malt usually refers to Scottish whisky, and we’re seeing huge interest in Irish whiskeys at the moment. At the event we’ll have some wonderful Irish whiskeys available, including Tullamore Dew and the Yellow Spot, Green Spot and Redbreast Irish pot still whiskeys.”

The town of Franschhoek is perfect for a day trip, or a holiday away from the city. You can visit the many wine estates, explore the grounds, picnic on the lawns or dine in the restaurants.

The expertise of the pourers behind the table is another drawcard of the Whisky and Gin Affair, with knowledgeable brand ambassadors to talk you through the intricacies of malting, peat and distilling. “It’s definitely a key element of the event,” says Wade. “We try and make sure that people with a real passion for whisky – and now, gin – are involved.”

ranschhoek is one of those places that feels so close that you tend to overlook it. It seems too near for a weekend away. Generally, we Capetonians will go for a day trip, visiting one of the many wonderful wine farms. However, Franschhoek deserves more than just a day. In the Western Cape, we’re spoilt with a variety of small, pretty towns, but Franschhoek has to be the crowning jewel. Its quaint, European feel immediately charms you, and the breathtaking mountains that surround the valley give it that magical, uniquely South African quality.

hat better way is there to spoil your mom next Sunday for Mother’s Day than with a special lunch somewhere beautiful? You can enjoy gorgeous scenery while creating memories together for the family album.

Waverley Hills

Enjoy a family day out at organic wine estate Waverley Hills, on a wild mountainside near Wolesley in the Tulbagh Valley. Kids will love exploring the winding paths, lawns and play area in the indigenous fynbos garden while adults linger in the comfortable family-friendly restaurant over generous dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Chef Francois du Toit has created a three-course Mother’s Day menu including crunchy crumbed prawns with an Asian twist of ginger and pops of soy caviar, chorizo-spiced

springbok carpaccio, rich and tender rosemary-infused lamb shank, or a delicate salmon in broth and light vegetable noodles. Kids can tuck into substantial burgers, grilled chicken, hand-cut chips and home-made ice cream. Add in a wine-tasting or take home the estate’s excellent olive products for an extra treat.

Lust Bistro

Another family-friendly destination is Lust Bistro on Vrede en Lust wine estate in the Franschhoek Valley. Known for the huge wood oven baking Jean-Pierre Smith’s artisanal breads, a seasonal chalkboard menu of bistro dishes, and generous Sunday buffet lunches, chef Johan van Schalkwyk is going all out for Mother’s Day with both a breakfast and a lunch buffet. On the lunch menu you can find slowroasted lamb with fig and olive jus, a seafood and saffron risotto bake,

lemon thyme chicken, and much more. This is followed by tempting fruit cake tiramisu, peach and white chocolate trifle, and pear and ginger sponge, plus a complimentary glass of Vrede en Lust sparkling wine for moms.

Grande Provence

The fine-dining Mother’s Day celebration is back on the cards. At Grande Provence in Franschhoek, chef Darren Badenhorst recently launched his new winter menu with gems such as the ocean umami risotto, slow-cooked beef cheek with foraged local mushrooms, linefish in pork crackling with pea sprout salad and samphire, and many more exciting taste experiences. Moms are made to feel extra special with a gift of a rose and a complimentary dessert of an almond and orange calisson with rose water parfait that is a feast for the eye and the palate.

I had the opportunity to visit Franschhoek recently, and as I was there for one night only, it was difficult to say goodbye. Auberge Daniella, a gorgeous self-catering guesthouse, was hosting its annual local networking event. It was an afternoon of local food, wine and music in a stunning setting. Auberge Daniella is a beautifully restored Victorian homestead that comprises three luxurious self-catering apartments that are elegantly styled and fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a stay of one night, two weeks or even longer. The gorgeous house in the lovely village setting quickly

starts to feel like a home away from home, but even more comfortable. This year’s event took place on a balmy afternoon. There was delicious food and wine from all over the Franschhoek Valley – it truly is the food and wine capital of the country. There were representatives from the Protea Hotel, La Petite Ferme, La Motte, Franschhoek Tourism, Allée Bleue and Rickety Bridge, among others. It was great to see people from the Franschhoek community come together, network, chat and just enjoy themselves. I felt lucky to be included. To top it all off, I got to stay in one of the Auberge Daniella suites, La Cotte, for the night. A night’s rest in one of the specially designed beds, with Egyptian cotton bedding, made it even more difficult to leave Franschhoek. Augusta, the friendly owner, managed to coax me out of bed with a freshly baked farm loaf that was still warm when she put it in my hands. With an amazing variety of restaurants, shops, wine farms, a wine tram and so much more on offer, Franschhoek deserves more than a day visit. Book yourself into Auberge Daniella and familiarise yourself with a town you should have got to know a long time ago.

at breakfast when a retail space became available on the Beach Road strip in Melkbosstrand in January this year. We had a meeting with the shop owner and within a week we were gearing up to open our first store together. Q: Why did you choose Melkbosstrand for your business? A: Dorette and I live in Melkbosstrand, we just found the way we eat and live our lives in general could do with the support of a retail outlet that catered to our needs. That made us wonder who else would love to shop locally instead of driving to Blouberg or to Cape Town. And, I mean, have you seen Beach Road? A shop with a view – what’s better? Q: How did you find your premises? A: We’re besties with someone we like to call the "unofficial mayor of Melkbosstrand" – nothing happens here without him knowing, and he told us about it.

M

elkbosstranders Jaimi Shields and Dorette Oosthuizen decided it was time their little town had its own health shop supplying foods and other products for a healthy and balanced lifestyle. The Dispensary, right on the busy beachfront, is becoming the go-to place for everything from kombucha, to yoga clothing and essential oils. Jaimi tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: The Dispensary started as an idea

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We have a beautiful view, loads of sunshine, good foot traffic and incredible neighbours, so there isn’t much left to wish for. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: I Love Melkies, a cafe specialising in tapas and pizza; and Ritzis on the other side, which focuses on Asian and veggie dishes.

also a high demand for office and retail space in Melkbosstrand as the West Coast is growing rapidly. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: It’s hard to tell at the moment as we’ve only been trading for a few weeks, but word is spreading and there’s lots of passing foot traffic. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: A lways. We’ll call them intentions and dreams for now. We’d love to cater to the vegan and dairyfree community on the West Coast providing pre-packed meal solutions for those who’d like to eat a certain way without the extra fuss. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have a website purely for information, and find that social media is very effective in attracting like-minded clientele. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our most popular items are probably our fresh juices and our Essene bread. Then we have a body product, an all-natural organic (where possible) range called Philosophia Botanica body oil; once you rub this on your skin, you can't help but leave with a bottle or two.

Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Our area is very up-and-coming, so prices aren’t very cheap. There’s

t’s chic, urban, contemporary and cool, but the true charm of De Waterkant, tucked next to Bo-Kaap on the flank of Signal Hill, is in its sense of history, it's Europeanvillage feel, narrow cobbled streets and terraced Georgian-style houses. Within easy walking distance of the CBD and the V&A Waterfront, De Waterkant is a popular base for overseas visitors. Its residents tend to be young professionals, attracted by the cafe culture, vibrant night life and laid-back cosmopolitan atmosphere that goes hand in hand with its reputation as a relaxed, gay-friendly neighbourhood.

De Waterkant is neither suburbia nor apartment living, but somewhere in between, with the best of both worlds. It's central, without the noise of the CBD, and it's aesthetically pleasing. BELINDA BOWLING, RESIDENT

“I love the community vibe, which I haven't found in other areas I've lived in SA,” says resident, Belinda Bowling. “People really look out for each other. In a world where communication is increasingly online and detached, having daily interactions with people in my home environment is important to me.” Home to some of best names in coffee, from Truth Coffee at the Prestwich Memorial, to Origin Coffee Roasting’s barista school in Hudson Street, De Waterkant overflows with trendy eateries, trattorias and restaurants on almost every street corner.

The recently restructured Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village has become a useful hub. It has a collection of chic design and decor stores, open-air courtyards with restaurant tables spilling out under shady trees, plus everyday essentials such as a Spar, a pharmacy, a hardware store and parking – something that's in short supply on the streets. There are gym facilities, free yoga sessions, a rooftop swimming pool and many more hidden gems, and it links onto the surrounding streets, so it feels like an integral part of the area. With parking at a premium, residents tend to walk everywhere and use the MyCiTi bus for longer trips. Fitness addicts can run to Green Point Urban Park for green open spaces and a plethora of sports clubs, or head up the steep trails among the fynbos on Signal Hill. Those lucky enough to have balconies and roof terraces enjoy views over the harbour, Signal Hill and Table Mountain. “Gazing from my roof terrace at Table Mountain in all her glory at dusk or dawn is definitely the best part of living in De Waterkant,” says Belinda.

DINE OUT: • Shio: for contemporary Asian tapas • Pigalle: for elegant steaks and Portuguese cuisine • Il Leone Mastrantonio: for upmarket classic Italian • The Charles Cafe: for breakfast • Osteria Tarantino: for Italian cuisine • Ground Art Caffe: for fab coffee and light meals • The Mess: for sharing plates

THINGS TO DO: • Browse through beautiful design shops at the Cape Quarter. • Visit the Prestwich Memorial Gardens to learn about the history of slavery. • Wander through the picturesque narrow streets. • Enjoy the night life with vibey bars and cafes. • Soak up the views and swim at the Batstone Pool on top of the Cape Quarter.

ON FOOT: • Hike up Signal Hill for views and nature. • Walk into the CBD in 10 minutes for work and play. • Stroll to the V&A Waterfront for shopping and entertainment. • Run to Green Point Urban Park for fitness training. • Walk to Cape Town Stadium for big matches and concerts.

Transport and traffic are shaping South Africa’s property market

T

raffic jams are a daily challenge for many residents of Johannesburg and Cape Town, and the desire to avoid them is informing many current property purchasing decisions in these two metros. Gerhard Kotzé, MD, RealNet estate agency group, says, “We can clearly see different preferences emerging among different groups of homebuyers. “The first of these is the growing demand among young buyers for apartments and townhouses in areas close to their workplaces, and preferably also very close to a variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment and sports venues. “This preference is being underpinned by the high cost of private transport, with fuel prices now being 20% higher than they were a year ago and the fuel levy and Road Accident Fund levy being increased every year. Add

this to the ever-increasing costs of maintaining and insuring a vehicle and many young people would far rather put that money towards rent or a home loan in a convenient location.” The second group of buyers doing their best to avoid traffic congestion, he says, are those with families who also want to live close to their children’s schools. “This is driving particularly strong demand for homes in older, central suburbs that are well supplied with schools within walking or minimal driving distance of home – and are still not too far from the office.” The third group, says Kotze, are “lifestyle” buyers for whom the new public transport systems, such as the Gautrain or the MyCiTi network, have created the opportunity to work in the city centre but live at the beach, for example, or in a more affordable suburb where they can perhaps buy a house rather than an apartment.

Making a move from a large freestanding home to a smaller, lock-up-and-go unit in a retirement estate has several advantages for consumers entering their golden years. A smaller home is far easier to maintain and costs less money. The homeowner can spend the time that would have been taken up by maintenance doing things that they enjoy. ADRIAN GOSLETT, REGIONAL DIRECTOR AND CEO, RE/MAX OF SOUTHERN AFRICA

New business park for Durbanville

W

ork on the new industrial precinct, developed by Abland and its partners, has started. The business park, situated on the slopes of Durbanville Hills estate on the N7 near Cape Town, has easy access to major highways and arterial routes. Occupation of the Atlantic Hills Business Park is set for January 2018. The size of the stands is flexible and can be from 1,000m² to 100,000m² with sufficient power available for low and high use purchasers or tenants.

There will be strict design guidelines with each building complementing the surrounding buildings and the environment, with a view to contributing positively to the immediate neighbourhood rather than standing in isolation. Two areas of the 72ha business park have been earmarked for conservation, primarily to protect a rare species of Renosterveld fynbos that only grows on granite found in this area. The reserve will be fully environmentally protected and offer tenants the pleasure of a green space close to their place of work.

Boom time for Winelands commercial property

D

uring the past five years commercial property prices in the Winelands have been rising well above the inflation rate, with a consistently active market seeing values increase by up to 15% per annum in the most sought-after nodes. This is according to Detlef Struck, commercial property specialist, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty Stellenbosch and Somerset West, who says one of the key driving forces has been the continued influx of semigirants from upcountry which has significantly driven up the demand, especially for office and retail space. Chris Cilliers, CEO and principal, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty Winelands, says: “Somerset West is fast becoming known as a commercial

hot spot and a prime location to buy commercial space as an investment.” She adds that with commercial property prices that are still about 20% cheaper than in Cape Town, the boom time in the commercial capital of the Helderberg Basin looks set to continue. Lew Geffen, chairman, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, believes there are currently few better property investments in South Africa than the Winelands commercial space. Geffen points out that another key factor underpinning the commercial growth in the region is the fact that people continue seek a better quality lifestyle away from the increasingly frenetic cities, and the Winelands ticks all the main boxes.

The tiny bathroom You’ll be amazed how you can fit a bathroom, or rather a shower room, into the tiniest space WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK

W

hether it’s a guest room, teenage pad or self-catering room you plan to let out, adding a shower room (no matter how small it is) adds value to a property. Plumbing is clearly important, but it’s always achievable; it’s just more about cost than capability. You’re not going to create a glorious oasis here, but you can give the room’s inhabitant more privacy and independence. It’s a question of how to configure the limited space, avoid water splashing and wetting everything, add ventilation, and make it feel less claustrophobic. This is about functionality, so keep it simple. A small bathroom needs features that make the space seem bigger, such as a mirror, clear floors, reflective tile colours like white or clear mosaics, or, if you can, a skylight. Your budget will dictate certain elements, but shop around for fittings – the array of small-space fittings available today is breathtaking. A wet room is a great, functional idea. This is a bathroom where the shower is open or set behind a single wall – its floor is level with the rest of the room and the water drains away through an outlet

on the floor. Not only does it allow you to make use of architectural quirks in a room’s shape which might otherwise be wasted space, but it’s also well waterproofed. One opinion is that the smallest practical wet room size is 1,5m x 1m, with enough space for a shower, toilet and wash basin. An important consideration is the shower splash radius. Installing a hinged or static glass partition will control the amount of water splash. Wet rooms are generally easier to clean, particularly if there’s no shower screen, because there’s no shower tray and the sink and toilet are wall-mounted. Floating elements like a wallmounted toilet and basin will always make the space seem bigger, so they have a dual purpose. Waterproofing in a wet room is everything, and best done by an experienced professional. Tanking is the process of waterproofing the floor and walls of a room. The usual wall and floor covering is tiles, but talk to the experts. Of equal importance are the various processes which ensure the floor has the correct gradient to channel water to the drain.
