Autumn escapes ith the summer winds on the wane and the flood of foreign tourists slowing to a trickle, now’s the time for locals to get out and explore the Winelands.

his week, we lost two phenomenal female leaders who made great strides for women and South Africa as a whole. On Monday afternoon, 2 April, anti-apartheid activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela died after a long illness. Fondly called the Mother of the Nation, her fight for a better South Africa will always be remembered.

in the mid-1970s with little more than an idea. Today, Pam Golding Properties has more than 300 offices across Africa, Europe and the Indian Ocean Islands. She died on Tuesday, 3 April, surrounded by her family. Our thoughts go out to both families during this time.
This venerable estate has long been one of the top drawcards in the Constantia Valley, with hordes of locals and tourists stopping in to discover the home of the iconic Vin de Constance. An overhaul of the visitor facilities was long overdue, and late last year the estate unveiled its revamped tasting facility. It’s a bright and airy space, with comfy couches and low tables encircling a central bar counter, ideal for either a quick stop or a more leisurely tasting. Picture windows offer a front-row seat to the production cellar, as well as a glimpse of the Vin de Constance barrel maturation room. The new Klein Constantia Bistro, under the knife of chef Graham Davies, is also well worth a visit for its compact menu of accomplished bistro cuisine. His hand-chopped steak tartare is some of the best in the city, so be sure to book ahead for a coveted terrace table.

The fires that ravaged the Winelands in
early 2017 razed many of the historic buildings on Druk My Niet Wine Estate on the outskirts of Paarl. A year on, this family-owned estate has dusted itself off and rebuilt, and yesterday threw open the doors to its refurbished cellar and tasting room to the public. Stop in for a taste of the delicious old vine Chenin Blanc or single-vineyard Syrah. “I can’t believe that it’s only a year since that fire nearly broke our spirits,” says owner Dorothee Kirchner, “but the hardships, the setbacks, the uncertainties are all behind us. We’ve endured and we’re set to prosper. Druk My Niet is back.”
Bellevue, Stellenbosch
Situated in the scenic Bottelary Hills, Bellevue is known for its quality Pinotage, and the revamped tasting room and restaurant is the ideal place to rediscover this proudly South African grape. The flagship wine is the Bellevue 1953 Pinotage, made from 65-year-old vines. The new tasting room is a stylish space in the old cellar, with restaurant tables overlooking grassy lawns and a children’s play area, making it an ideal spot for families.

Rare cuts Introduce your palate to delicious, lesser-known steaks at Giorgio Nava’s Carne restaurants WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

iorgio Nava was an advocate of nose-to-tail eating long before it became a thing; it’s always been deeply rooted in the Italian tradition to make the most of each animal and let nothing go to waste. At his two specialist meat restaurants, Carne on Keerom and Carne on Kloof, he presents steak cuts that you will rarely find elsewhere, in classic Italian style.

he fourth annual Pinotage and Biltong Festival will take place on 14 and 15 April at Perdeberg Cellar in Paarl. With an oyster and MCC bar, live music, food trucks, craft beer, a kids’ play area and stunning scenery, what’s not to like? Lanzarac Estate’s winemaker Wynand Lategan, who will be presenting his wines at the festival, says the experience allows visitors to taste all of South Africa’s best Pinotages in one location. “Stop by our stand to learn more about our Premium Pinotage 2015 and Pinotage Rosé 2017, as well as our rich history of Pinotage − as the estate which bottled the world’s first Pinotage.”
The Pinotage and Biltong Festival returns to the Perdeberg Cellar this month WORDS: BELINDA MOUNTAIN

Pinotage and biltong are indigenous South African products packed full of flavour. But what makes a good Pinotage? Wynand says, “Pinotages are full of flavours like prunes and plums. It’s an expressive wine – not shy. On the palate, it gives you a full mouthful of flavours with delicate spices and soft round tannins.” Guests are encouraged to come dressed up in purple and white, and to post pictures of themselves on social media to stand a chance to win great prizes. Ticket prices include access to the event, a branded wine glass, a curated tasting of 18 Pinotage and biltong pairings and other free wine tastings. Wynand will also showcase the award-winning Pionier Pinotage (which received a five-star rating in the Platter’s 2018 South African Wine Guide) at the event. “It’s probably the best wine that our estate has ever produced, in probably the best vintage in the Cape ever. Everything is in balance,” says Wynand.
win To celebrate its Pinotage heritage, Lanzerac Wine Estate is offering one lucky Neighbourhood reader the chance to win a delicious Lanzerac Pinotage-inspired gift box and two tickets for the festival on 15 April – worth a total of R910. At a table for eight recently, Giorgio showed us a tray of different cuts including hanger, flat iron and spider steaks. These lesser-known cuts usually become burgers, he told us, but when carefully prepared, they are some of his favourite steaks to grill. Spider steak is hard to get hold of, each animal only yields two portions, so it’s only on the menu at the Kloof Street restaurant. Another bonus is that these cuts are much more affordable than T-bone, sirloin and fillet. But first our starters. Offal has always been treasured by the Italians as a nutritional powerhouse and a delicacy, and Giorgio does it well. We had succulent sweetbreads to mop up a light white wine and butter sauce. Then
we scooped every last bit of marrow from split bones doused in sage butter, and sampled Giorgio’s classic lamb ravioli dressed simply in butter and sage – always well worth making space for, the sage crisp and fragrant. As we tasted the various steaks, the subtle differences in flavour and texture were revealed. Hanger steak, from the belly, has a rich, almost gamey depth; the flat iron, from the shoulder, is closer textured and reminiscent of the best roast beef; and the spider steak, from around the hip, is marbled with a delicate web of fat that makes it tender, loose-textured and flavoursome. Simply grilled on the Josper Charcoal Oven – seared at a high heat for that perfect braai finish, with good olive oil – the steaks were served with steamed broccoli and spinaci saltati. Then came a final offal offering, the calf liver was also unbelievably good, prepared Venetian style, with onions braised in balsamic vinegar that are rich, savoury and melt in your mouth. Accompanying Steenberg wines were a good match for the meat, especially the Catharina and the Nebbiolo. This was a steak night with a classic Italian difference.

My business neighbourhood Beetroot Inc in Table Bay Mall brings a new approach to beautiful living WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGES: SUPPLIED
B
eetroot Inc is a fresh new, “Made in South Africa” lifestyle brand that’s brightening up the retail sector with a funky range of furniture and home decor. Founder and CEO Elize van der Berg tells us why she chose Table Bay Mall for the first Cape Town store. Q: How did your business start? A: Beetroot Inc started as a job creation project. We started with two people and a sewing machine, initially supplying soft furnishings to corporates. Subsequently, we moved into retail, developing a diverse and authentic product range created by South Africans for South Africans. Our first retail stores were pop-ups in the Pretoria area. The first permanent Beetroot Inc outlet opened at Menlyn Maine Central Square in April 2017. Our other outlets in Gauteng are in Waterkloof Corner (Pretoria), Springs and Fourways Mall. We operate one store in KwaZuluNatal (at Ballito Junction) and two in the Western Cape (Tyger Valley and Table Bay Mall). Now we estimate that Beetroot Inc employs about 600 people. Q: Why did you choose this area for your store? A: T he scale of residential development in the area made it a natural choice, and established areas like Table View, Milnerton and Melkbos are in close proximity. Table Bay is not too far from our other store in Tyger Valley, which makes it easier to replenish both stores in one go from our Pretoria headquarters. Q: How did you find your premises? A: T he developers of Table Bay Mall approached us. We went to have a look and we were hooked. The premises were good, clean, fresh and new!
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T here’s a fine mix of stores in Table Bay Mall. The mall is consumer-friendly with spacious corridors and oodles of natural light. It’s frequented by the type of people who enjoy Beetroot Inc’s offering. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Sorbet and Decor South. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: I would say fair, considering that the mall was new when we occupied the space. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: It’s a new mall, so the footprint is expanding but still fluctuating at this stage. On weekends and during holiday periods, there’s a marked increase in traffic. We expect the demand to stabilise as the mall evolves into the shopping destination of choice for people in and around the area.
Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Beetroot Inc now has seven retail outlets across Gauteng, KwaZuluNatal and the Western Cape, and will probably expand to other areas over the next year. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We do. Online business is picking up steadily. Q: What’s your most popular item/ service? A: People love our furniture and the fact that we customise items. Beetroot’s reupholstery service is also growing in popularity. Our Eco-range, made from reclaimed wood, is also getting the thumbs-up because of the rustic look it brings to the party, as well as the fact that it’s environmentally friendly.

Game reserves in the Western Cape Enjoy a wilderness experience like no other WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

L
ion, elephant and giraffe might not roam the streets of Cape Town, as some overseas visitors might expect, but the Africa of their imagination isn’t too far from reality. The Western Cape is home to several Big Five safari experiences that allow you to take a walk on the wild side without travelling all the way to the Kruger National Park. But the true safari experience isn’t just about ticking wildlife sightings off a list. It’s a journey into the wild, where you can immerse yourself in nature, big skies and unspoilt landscapes and restore the soul. The Western Cape, with its varied fynbos biome, offers a range of bush experiences that do just that.
Big Five Sanbona Wildlife Reserve sets the bar high for a classic Big Five safari. The 58,000ha private reserve in the
Little Karoo beyond Montagu is home to free-roaming white lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard, as well as a host of smaller animals – including the critically endangered riverine rabbit – rich birdlife and ancient rock art sites. Tilney Manor offers intimate luxury, Gondwana Family Lodge (not to be confused with the game reserve of the same name) is child-friendly – with a Kids on Safari programme – and Dwyka Tented Lodge offers an experience of the ancient landscape once home to the Khoisan. Gondwana Game Reserve on the Garden Route, inland from Mossel Bay, is another top safari experience. The 11,000ha reserve is home to the Big Five, cheetah, mountain zebra and a variety of birds and plants endemic to the Mossel Bay area. Choose between the classic lodge, luxury bush villas with the option of self-catering for longer stays, ultra-luxe, sole-use Ulubisi House, or the tented eco-camp conservation
experience, giving a glimpse behind the scenes of a Big Five safari.
Day safaris If time or budget constraints don’t allow for an overnight stay, some game reserves cater for day visitors. The 10,000ha Inverdoorn Game Reserve near Ceres is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, and the Garden Route Game Lodge near Albertinia is well placed if you’re already driving up the Garden Route. Both are Big Five private game reserves also offering the whole safari lodge package.
Luxury bush experiences

Besides being malaria-free, these somewhat less traditional safari experiences are quite different. And while you might not spot the Big Five, the landscape is so diverse. You’ll certainly come home with an enriched knowledge of our unique fynbos and possibly even see rare rock art. MICHELLE SNADDON, PERFECT HIDEAWAYS

The Koro Lodge private villa is also ideal for families. At Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, overlooking Walker Bay beyond Hermanus, you can enjoy inspiring fynbos nature drives, walks through the ancient forest, whale-watching in winter, horse-riding trails and more.
Private escapes A private self-catering cottage in a nature reserve allows you to experience the surroundings at your own pace, whether that’s lounging on a shady stoep for hours with binoculars or exploring trails on foot or mountain bike. Helen Untiedt of Perfect Hideaways visited Tankwa River Lodge in the Karoo in winter last year and says, “We spent our time in the pool and went for game drives. At night we gathered around the central fire pit under the vast starry night skies. But best of all, there’s the serenity of nothingness!” Other Perfect Hideaways off-the-grid properties on private reserves include Stoney Cottage and Klipspringer, both on Route 62. De Hoop Nature Reserve borders the marine protected area along the coast from the Breede River mouth where whales come to calve in winter. Accommodation ranges from the restored Melkkamer Homestead to small self-catering cottages perfectly located for bird-watching, exploring the reserve and cycling adventures among bontebok and Cape mountain zebra.

A new generation of retirees Today’s active retirees want financial and physical security, comprehensive health care and a carefree lifestyle WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
S
ixty is the new 40. We’re living much longer, we’re healthier and more active later in life. Retirement is not synonymous with old age – it’s just another phase of life with its own joys and freedoms.
What do retirees want?
Worldwide, retirees are being asked, not told, what they want. They want to be an integral part of the greater community, as participants not spectators. Val de Vie picked up on this trend and included a retirement lifestyle village on its estate. “Including Val de Vie Evergreen in Val de Vie Estate’s diverse range of products and amenities on offer gives families the option of remaining in the Valley of Life in any stage of their lives and being part of a growing community,” says Ryk Neethling, marketing director, Val de Vie Estate. Retirees want to live independently, but want to know that they will have access to quality care when they need it. They also want to feel secure, so living within a gated community with world-class security systems provides that all-important carefree lifestyle.
VILLAGE
“At Val de Vie Evergreen, the ultimate carefree retirement lifestyle is ensured by providing retirees the option of living on an established residential development with an existing focus
on an active, outdoor lifestyle in a secure environment. A team of dedicated on-site professionals will furthermore take care of all day-today aspects of estate living and allow for residents to retire in comfort with complete peace of mind,” says Ryk.
Health care
that owns the residence and are issued a share certificate.
Quality health care is a priority, and there are different care models countrywide. Increasingly, though, there’s a strong move towards an active ageing philosophy, supported by personalised home-based and primary health care. Staying at home for as long as possible is what everybody wants. Many retirement estates also offer specialised treatment, 24-hour nursing as well as recuperative and palliative care.
Internationally, the life rights model is the most popular, particularly in the US. “It’s a relatively new concept for South Africans,” says Arthur Case, CEO, Evergreen Lifestyle, “but it’s gaining traction swiftly because of its undoubted benefits for retirees. Retirees want to leave behind the maintenance and responsibilities of a house, and this model is tailormade for that. Evergreen Lifestyle Villages offer a great quality of life.”
With life rights, you don’t purchase a unit, but you and your spouse have a legal right to occupy the property for a lifetime.
Inclusive and exclusive
Retirees want to be part of a broader community, but also want to live independently in their own homes. Increasingly, a village within a village – where facilities are open to all residents and interaction between young and not so young is the natural order of the day – is proving to be the desired way of living.
Purchase models
Retirement homes worldwide offer different purchase models: sectional title, share block and life rights. With the sectional title model, the purchaser obtains ownership of a unit or residence by means of a title deed registered with the Deeds Registry. The developer carries no responsibility for the ongoing maintenance once the development has been built – that rests with the residents. In a share block retirement scheme, owners get shares in the company
