nthonij Rupert Wyne may be best known for its L’Ormarins and Terra del Capo ranges, but, I’d argue, far and away the most interesting wines in the stable come from its Cape of Good Hope selection of "terroir-specific" wines. With grapes drawn mainly from older vineyards, in label and name each wine pays homage to its origins, honouring the terroir, flora and farmers that have shaped the vines over their long years in the ground.

One of two UCOOK family meals

A perfect example is the Laing Semillon. On his farm Trekpoort, between Lambert’s Bay and Clanwilliam, farmer Henk Laing tends the 60-year-old Semillon bush vines that produce a remarkable wine that is lively and generous on the palate. It’s a superb food wine and a beautiful snapshot of this far-flung corner of the Cape Winelands.

This is also true for the Serruria Chardonnay, sourced from highaltitude vines in the Elandskloof valley beyond Villiersdorp. A number of top producers turn to this valley for their Chardonnay and a sip of

the Serruria soon reveals why. Cold nights and moderate summer days allow for long, even ripening, while a delicate oak touch in the cellar has produced a remarkable Chardonnay that is rich and vibrant. And Serruria? It’s a tip of the hat to Serruria florida, a species of Proteaceae betterknown as the "blushing bride". The adventurous Caroline white blend is also superb: blending Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne from vineyards on the slopes of the Kasteelberg in the Swartland.

savoury notes and elegant tannins. The current 2013 release will benefit from another year or two in the cellar. Although the current vintage is sold out, look out too for the Basson Pinotage, made from vines high on the Paardeberg tended by the Basson family. The altitude, lack of irrigation and naturally low yields produce a wine of perfume and spice that offers a memorably different taste of Pinotage.

If you prefer reds this winter, the farm also provides the fruit for the wonderful Riebeeksrivier Southern Slopes, a Rhône-style red built on Shiraz with small portions of Mourvèdre and Petite Syrah. Although the vines are still young, it’s a wine brimming with dark fruit and bright red berries, neatly balanced by

Cooking up a storm Enjoy good food, wine and sociable banter at the Ginger and Lime studio WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED & ISTOCK

f you love good food but are slightly intimidated by the mysteries of beurre blanc or making your own curry paste, an evening class at Ginger and Lime is a fun way to expand your culinary horizons.

Reach for the sky The latest addition to the Cape Town skyline, the stylish Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence, is set to be the city’s next big thing WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE

T

here’s something special about living in Cape Town's city centre. Having recently moved from Kloof Street to the 'burbs, I've missed the energy and buzz of the CBD. So when I got the chance to spend a night at the Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence on Riebeek Street, I couldn’t wait to immerse myself once again in the city life.

IMAGES: SUPPLIED

The first thing you need to know is that there are no half measures at the Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence. As Cape Town’s tallest residential building it makes quite an impression. Moreover, it's the decor that really stands out for me. With its strong Art Deco feel, the interior screams Great Gatsby. According to Desmond O’Connor, general manager, Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence, "Sophisticated design and elegant decor are an integral part of the Radisson Blu brand globally, with the decor of each hotel around the world meticulously planned and designed and tailored to the city and country it is situated in. After all, being iconic, stylish and sophisticated is in Blu’s DNA." We arrived on a Friday afternoon and were warmly welcomed at reception before being led to our chic room complete with a gorgeous blue ombre feature wall and black-and-white geometric carpet. Though the 214 rooms come with all the necessities you may need during your stay, the

most outstanding feature, of course, is the stunning view, which in our case was overlooking Signal Hill and the bustling streets below. After slipping into something more casual, our next stop was the Ghibli Bar and Pool Terrace on the first floor. The weather was a bit rainy during our stay, but that didn’t stop us from appreciating the fantastic bar and terrace, which I know will be my go-to sundowner spot when summer arrives. After drinks, you can head to The Stratus Room for dinner. The restaurant offers a dining experience that embraces local cuisine with a mix of seasonal ingredients and stunning views. Stephanie Telchi, marketing manager, described the menu as “a sophisticated whimsy on every plate”, and I couldn't agree more. We ended our night with a quick stop at The Village Idiot, a short walk away, for a night cap in a vibey atmosphere before heading back to our room to kick off our shoes and relax with a movie. Whether you're on a business trip or just looking for a retreat in the city, the Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence has just the right combination of high energy and style. Keep an eye out for its all-day Burger and Beer special (R85) at The Sea Street Bar and Lounge, which runs until August, and the regular food and wine pairing evenings at The Stratus Room.

The sociable format around the kitchen table, sipping wine and chatting as you cook and eat your way through the menu, creates a fun and often uproarious atmosphere. You can do as much or as little handson cooking as takes your fancy and take the recipes home with you to try out your newly acquired skills. Classes on offer span the globe, from Thai to Italian, some featuring wellknown guest chefs, others led by welltravelled, self-taught chef, Denise Levy, whose beautiful home in Fresnaye is the venue. It was Denise's idea to share the warmth of her family kitchen in these interactive classes. “Food is like therapy,” she says. “You’ve got a knife in your hand; you have to be very present. You’re tasting sauces to see what they need; you’re focused and grounded.” The menu we were tackling that evening was classic French cuisine. Even absolute beginners joined in the

preparation and there were lightbulb moments for the more experienced home cooks. My big takeaway was Denise’s “low and slow” mantra for cooking everything that doesn’t require high heat and searing. Not a bubble broke the surface of the court-bouillon as we gently poached the kingklip. When it landed on our plates it was cooked to perfection, enhanced with a wicked beurre blanc sauce, which two of the group had been patiently stirring to melt in a mountain of fridge-cold butter. As each course was completed, we took turns plating and then tucked in before taking on the next dish. There was no chance of going hungry. Once we’d discovered the secret of perfectly crispy skin on duck breast and made a savoury orange sauce, it was on to the hearty beef bourguignon, which had been slowly simmering all evening, with plenty left for seconds. It’s a fun way to eat as well as a learning experience, and being part of the preparation makes you appreciate the flavours even more. Upcoming classes include Asian Fusion, French Winter Comfort Food, Cape Malay, The Classics Made Easy and Simply Italian.

My business neighbourhood A no frills, no fuss PR and talent management agency, 20 Across, is now based in Salt River WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: EBEN PHOTOGRAPHY

S

pecialising in celebrity publicity, as well as lifestyle and entertainment PR, Fabrizia Degli Esposti, director, 20 Across, has quickly built up her agency from a one-woman enterprise to a team of four. Q: How did your business start? A: I was working for a global sportswear brand. The hours were long and the workload intense, but I loved it primarily because of the people. While on vacation

in Mozambique nursing a very twitchy left eye that had developed from stress, it hit me that I could, should and would follow my dream of owning my own business. Back home I met with a business coach to establish what my business would be, then set to work on the logo design, company profile and so forth. Most importantly, I ensured I had more than enough savings to be able to pay my bills for six months while I got the business going. By February 2015, I was ready to take flight.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I’ve been living in Salt River for 11 years and love the gritty yet rejuvenated elements this part of town offers. It’s rough, but there’s so much to do and see here besides the Old Biscuit Mill, and the views are amazing. Office rental is also more affordable than in the CBD. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Good old Google. The property was advertised by Daleglen Properties, which represents many office rentals in the area. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The building we’re in, Salt Circle, is filled with creative businesses, which helps fuel what we do. We’re still very central to Cape Town, with quick and easy access to highways and the city centre. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Salt Circle houses everything from an Aids organisation to digital designers; architects; a corporate gifting NGO; digital media buyers; clothing, furniture and jewellery manufacturers; and photography and production studios. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: We were previously based in Gardens in a private 18m2 office – part of a communal office share. For less rental in Salt River, including utilities and dedicated fibre, we have a 51m2 office flooded with light.

Q: How many people go through your office each day? A: Most of our work is via email or telephone, but we often host our clients in our office. They all love the space, which is cosy yet functional. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’re currently three ladies in the office and have a new member joining the team this July. We have more than enough space and can’t wait to welcome more members very soon. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Most of our work has been generated from word of mouth, so although having an online presence is important, we thankfully have not had to rely on it. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: We specialise in celebrity publicity, representing local and international TV and radio personalities, DJs, musicians, performers, filmmakers, photographers, YouTubers, sportsmen and women, business leaders, content creators, models, comedians and lawyers, to name but a few. We make famous people more famous!

Opportunities abound Just Property is rapidly emerging as a leader in the property business

S

omething noteworthy is happening at Just Property; there’s a restlessness, a sense of anticipation that is driving change and drawing attention from across the industry. This appears to be a brand that is going places, driven to do things differently in a traditionally staid industry. Born from humble beginnings, as the go-to company for property rentals and management, Just Property now delivers across the property spectrum: sales, rentals, and commercial and investment opportunities. This fresh, dynamic brand is increasingly attractive to prospective clients and employees alike.

Going places

The market sentiment is depressed, with local economic conditions directing many away from investing in property. One would understand if agents and brokers felt threatened and negative about their industry. The sentiment from the leadership at Just Property is that it is well positioned to ride this storm out and to emerge stronger than before. Its strong rental footprint offers a stable annuity income across the country and it is keenly focused on building its sales capacity so that it can take advantage when the market turns. Based at Just Property’s head office, Carla Visagie (national business manager) is championing new products. Externally, her Homeownership Journey serves to “educate to affect change” and is an investment that will

teach inexperienced buyers how to achieve responsible and sustainable homeownership. Internally, this millennial is driving a contemporary sales mindset across the franchises.

Proudly South African

Transformation is needed in the property sector and it goes beyond the requirements of the Broad-Based BEE Act, the Department of Trade and Industry Codes of Good Practice on BBBEE and the Property Sector Transformation Charter. Just Property recognises, at the level of both hearts and minds, that change is something to be favoured and not feared. The Estate Agency Affairs Board indicates on its website that approximately 8% of the 50,000 estate agents currently registered are black. The figures at Just Property show a very different picture, with about 30% of its agents from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Transformation is prominently placed in the Head Office Vision Statement, motivated by the belief in “Equal rights for a better tomorrow”. These are not empty words on a wall; equality is a key tenet in its national “Living our Values” initiative, which agents, managers and franchisees across the country are actively engaged in.

Internationally recognised

Just Property is building an international, best-in-class reputation. As one of only two South African companies to have been awarded the International Star for Quality award, it

is proudly part of a global team of elite companies and has been recognised for excellence in people and brand leadership, products and services, and innovative use of technologies. Recently, it was named as a recipient of an African Property Award, the most acclaimed industry award throughout the region. This is an achievement that is recognised as a mark of excellence for property professionals. “We are very proud to have been nominated and to have had our company recognised in these regional awards,” says Paul Stevens, CEO, Just Property. “It’s a testimony to the hard work of growing a company, which is achieved through the determination and vision of every one of our employees, franchisees and agents. This achievement belongs to us all.” With its restless energy and continued investment in technology, learning and development, and brand awareness, Just Property is rapidly emerging as a leader in the property business. One cannot ignore the appeal Just Property has for prospective clients and for those looking to have a fulfilling career in property.

Waterfall Estates property options almost sold out

C

entury Property Developments’ Waterfall Estates was launched in 2006. Since then, out of the 2,400 properties in the five Waterfall estates, only 20 developer stands remain for sale from R2,9m each and three retirement houses from R4,5m. Century, however, has two new rental precincts in Waterfall offering rentals in 230m² threebedroom homes from R22,000/ month and 415m² five-bedroom homes from R44,000/month. Waterfall comprises secure residential estates; business parks; a Netcare hospital; five-star hotels;

the Reddam House and Curro private schools; as well as commercial and convenient retail centres like Waterfall Wilds, Waterfall Corner and the largest shopping mall built in a single phase in Southern Africa, the Mall of Africa. “Lifestyle is important to our family, so it was natural when Waterfall showcased its offering, ‘Lifestyle, Location and Facilities’, that we wanted in. We wanted to belong to a green city with a contemporary urban feel and surrounded by nature. We're very happy; the development is extraordinary,” says Gaynor Dos Santos, resident, Waterfall Country Estate.

Design smart You’ve bought a piece of land, you know exactly what you want to build and you have a budget. Where to now? WORDS: ANNE SCHUAFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK

In the last few years, we've seen Brackenfell go from being a mere dormitory suburb serving Cape Town and the surrounding precincts to being a prosperous, thriving, self-contained precinct – and there can be no doubt at all that property development has been both a catalyst and a beneficiary of this transformation ROWAN ALEXANDER, DIRECTOR, ALEXANDER SWART PROPERTY

Retirees seek homes that allow for active lifestyles

R

etirees within the Gauteng region are increasingly looking for homes that afford them the opportunity to live a lifestyle that is completely free of concerns so that they're able to enjoy the maximum amount of freedom and independence during this new phase of their lives. “There's a growing demand for residential properties that afford older individuals the opportunity to live life to the maximum and at last be able to fully engage in passions that they had to put to one side while pursuing their careers and bringing up their children,” says Kyle Ebben, manager, Pam Golding Properties Fourways. “More and more people in Johannesburg today are seeking to spend their retirement years as actively and zestfully as possible,” adds Ebben.

“They consequently require a high level of security and health support to be close to hand in order to provide them with peace of mind, but they also wish to easily lock up and go should they want to visit their families or travel, for example. As a result of these trends, we're seeing ongoing demand within Johannesburg for residential property options that enable such a lifestyle.”

T

here’s something special about imagining and building your own home, but before you venture down that road, examine your budget, do some homework and speak to others who’ve chosen this route. It’s not for the faint-hearted, because on a budget, you need to be comfortable with compromise, otherwise you’ll be tapped out before you’ve reached the front door.

Ebben spoke at the announcement by Pam Golding Properties of La Vie Nouvelle, a new retirement estate in Broadacres, Fourways. The estate consists of 220 units set in a tranquil Highveld wetland area in close proximity to thriving Fourways. A comprehensive frail care and medical centre will be completed by the end of 2017 and will be available to those residents who require health and medical support.

First African school to receive Green Star rating announced

T

he Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) has announced that Streetlight Schools’ Jeppe Park Primary is the first school in Africa to receive a Green Star rating, having achieved a Four-Star Green Star SA Interiors v1 certification. Jeppe Park Primary boasts a number of green building- and sustainabilityfocused measures and the focus is on high-quality, low-cost education that puts the wellbeing of the students first. The naturally ventilated building with many windows provides the students with access to healthy indoor spaces. Locally sourced materials provide acoustically designed spaces such as classrooms, libraries, and play and social areas suited to educational purposes. School ground greening allows for various outdoor activities as well as the inclusion of nature as an integral part of learning and development. The use of low emission

printers and photocopy equipment, and low volatile organic compounds, adhesives, sealants and carpets reduces internal air pollution levels. The primary school is built in an old shoe factory in inner-city Johannesburg and repurposed and locally sourced materials and furniture have mostly been used. An environmental management plan was implemented in all construction phases and a waste management plan successfully reduced construction waste by 30%. Dorah Modise, CEO, GBCSA, says, “The school has gone to great lengths to reduce its waste generation by developing and implementing an Operational Waste Management Plan and providing separation bins, food waste recycling, ‘Bokashi’ composting and recycling waste storage areas. Education of students in all areas of development and sustainability is evident when you visit the children at the school.”

Top tips:

1

If you envisage one day expanding your two-bedroom cottage into a four-bedroom family home, rather get that designed by your architect.

2

Project management is usually 30% of an architect’s fees, so if you have the staying power and skills to do it yourself, choose that option. It’s a major cost saver. But architect Torbjorn Hanssen suggests chatting to your architect about an hourly rate, so you could still have access to the him/ her if there are any issues on site.

It seems cost-effective to reduce the services of professionals, do some of the work yourself and shop around. After all, you know exactly what you want, so why would you need an architect? Surely you can manage the project yourself? But be warned – managing a project of this nature is not simple; it’s time-consuming, and unless you have the required skills, mistakes can be costly. It’s also worth bearing in mind that, in most instances, an architect or, sometimes, a contractor, will have excellent buying relationships with suppliers. So, for example, a tile that would normally cost R100, they’ll obtain on your behalf for R75. Torbjorn Hanssen, architect, U2 Design Lab, cautions against oversimplifying the process. “Yes, you might have some great, clear ideas as to what you want, but it’s more complex than simply drawing up a plan – particularly when you have a tight budget. Don’t waste your money on getting an architect to redesign a plan which the contractor can’t implement,” he says. “Everything comes down to a square metre rate and inefficient or unwieldy designs are a big driver of costs. Passages, for example, are essentially wasted space, yet you’ll be paying

the self-same R10,000 to R14,000 a square metre, as you will for your lounge. Passages are very simplistic, lazy ways to link rooms together, but they’re not imaginative, useful or cost-effective uses of space. “One of the key elements of a professional house design is orientation – not simply which way the dwelling faces, but integral to that is compliance with the energy-efficiency SANS 10400 legislation. There’s give and take in a compliant design, so in order to get your expansive east-facing windows to take in the sea view, it will be balanced out with a covered veranda/thickened glass/ louvres and so on. Orientation is second nature to an architect. “An architect simplifies the process. I get a brief from you. You hand me your wish list and we break it down into areas on a spreadsheet and from the outset establish costs, a budget. There are numerous elements which affect cost and I point them out. “One of the costliest items when building a house is your choice of a roof. If your dream is open rafters, you may think it’s the less expensive option – no ceilings needed, so it must be. But it isn’t. They’re achievable, of course, and I’ll make sure you get them. You get them because I know how to design so as to maximise the ease with which rafters can be achieved. “Many of the layman’s perceptions of less expensive options are not in fact valid. Or they may be valid at the outset, but they may have a shorter life or create other issues further down the track.”

Wellington Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

IMAGES: WELLINGTON TOURISM & ISTOCK

W

ith the towering Hawequa mountains as a backdrop and the Berg River as its western border, Wellington is at the centre of a picturesque valley known for its terroirdriven wines and excellent brandies introduced by the French Huguenots who originally settled in the area. Once an important provisions station for pioneers venturing into the interior over Bainskloof Pass, Wellington is now slightly off the beaten track for tourists, tucked away beyond neighbouring Paarl, but the country peace and historic wine estates attract weekenders and international visitors who prefer to escape the well-trodden routes to discover this unspoilt rural retreat. Very much a working country town, Wellington’s centre takes you back to the days before malls. “The people here are very old school, offering traditional hospitality that’s honest and friendly,” says Susanna Tecklenburg , co-owner, Oude Wellington Restaurant. “It’s a good, strong community, where everybody knows everybody. People stand together, whether it’s fighting the fires earlier this year or winning the Kwela Western Cape Town of the Year in 2015.”

DINE OUT: • Oude Wellington Restaurant: for delicious lunches and dinners • Seasons at Diemersfontein: for leisurely meals surrounded by stunning views • Perfect Place: for breakfasts and lunches in town • Au d’Hex Estate Restaurant: for gourmet breakfasts and light deli-style, Mediterranean-inspired lunches • The Stone Kitchen: for rustic, bistro-style food • Piza e Vino at Val du Charron: for simple, traditional Italian cuisine • Bar Bar Black Sheep: for hearty, country-style meals

THINGS TO DO: • Taste some of the best terroirdriven wines in the country. • Enjoy the Wellington Wine Walk – a three-day route. • Go horse riding through the Fynbos Trails. • Visit the Breytenbach Centre for art exhibitions. • Go mountain biking at Welvanpas Wine Estate. • Play golf at Wellington Golf Club. • Explore the home of Three Ships Whisky at The James Sedgwick Distillery.

NATURE NEARBY: • Limietberg Nature Reserve and Bainskloof Pass: for hiking trails • Bontebok Ridge Reserve: for wildlife and bird-watching • Die Vonds Snake Park: for a variety of reptiles • Bartholomeus Klip Renosterveld Reserve • Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve

What attracts holidaymakers and property investors to Wellington?

Agent Insight A local property expert gives us the inside scoop on Wellington.

Wellington attracts wine lovers and those who enjoy being outdoors. There are guesthouses on the surrounding farms, good restaurants, a wine route and the historic Bainskloof Pass (where leopards still roam). The area lends itself to outdoor pursuits like horse riding and mountain biking. The town has easy access to the Northern Suburbs, Cape Town and Stellenbosch and has attracted property investors looking for reasonably priced homes with access to good schools and the atmosphere of a country town. Chris Cilliers LEW GEFFEN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY 082 568 1122 chris@sothebysrealtystb.co.za sothebysrealty.co.za

As well as a selection of private and public schools, Wellington is home to campuses for the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Boland College, with a flourishing student population. The area also has the Breytenbach Centre offering an intimate dinner theatre, art exhibitions and community art programmes. But it’s the outdoor lifestyle that's the biggest attraction for visitors. “The people are friendly, the weather is

fantastic and you can compare the countryside with the south of France or Tuscany in Italy,” says Jan van der Does. Originally from Holland, Jan and his wife fell in love with the area and bought Lady Loch Country House last year. Their guests find Wellington to be an excellent base for exploring the Winelands and love the peace, the views and hiking and mountain biking in the mountains above Wellington at Bainskloof. There’s flyfishing in the crystal-clear mountain streams, horse riding through the indigenous fynbos, abseiling and excellent bird and wildlife viewing. Make time to explore the wine and brandy route in leisurely style, enjoying the Cape Dutch architecture, the beautiful scenery and wine tastings. Besides excellent wines, the fertile valley is known for fresh (often organic) produce, there are olive and fruit growers and Wellington is proud to be home to South Africa’s only producer of genuine buffalo mozzarella at Buffalo Ridge. A farming community with great wines and great heart, Wellington is one of the hidden gems of the Winelands.

We love the lifestyle in the countryside, being close to nature, the beautiful crisp mornings. It’s still safe here and you can breathe in the fresh air. SUSANNA TECKLENBURG, CO-OWNER, OUDE WELLINGTON RESTAURANT
