Much more to mushrooms I nteresting fact number one: The average South African consumes 0,3kg of mushrooms annually. The average Australian consumes almost 3,6kg of mushrooms per year. Interesting fact number two: Those mushrooms you see in story books and cartoons (the red ones with the white dots) actually do exist in real life. But don’t eat them, because, while they won’t kill you, they will make you very sick. And hallucinate slightly. And not in a good way.
This I found out at a wild mushroom foraging day, held by South Africa’s leading mushroom supplier, Denny. Expert Gary Goldman accompanied us as we crashed through the forest in gumboots on the Delheim Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, in search of the elusive fungus, explaining which ones are edible and which should be avoided at all costs. Also on hand were the amazing Denny team, who really live the brand and helped to explain the health benefits of the humble mushroom. The past few years have seen a major emphasis on personal health and that of the environment, and it was interesting to hear how something as simple as a mushroom plays such a big part. Considered a superfood, mushrooms are high in protein, low in carbohydrates and packed with essential minerals, vitamins and powerful antioxidants. They’re rich in selenium, a powerful antioxidant that lowers oxidative stress in the body, which in turn reduces inflammation and boosts the immune system. Mushrooms also contain phytochemicals, which have been found to specifically suppress breast and prostate cancer. Not only are mushrooms good for you but, because they’re grown sustainably, they’re good for the environment too. And with the increasing trend towards plant-based diets, mushrooms offer a meat alternative with a similar taste and texture, but without sacrificing flavour or nutrients.
So, there you have it. If you’re not yet convinced, try this recipe and prepare to be amazed...
Portabella burger with avonnaise Makes 4
Ingredients 8 Denny portabella mushrooms 4 meat/chicken/veggie patties 2 tomatoes 1 red onion 50g fresh rocket olive oil salt freshly ground black pepper For the avonnaise 2 ripe avocados ¼ cup fresh coriander, chopped ¼ cup red onion, diced ½ cup Greek yogurt 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp jalapeño, diced salt Here’s how 1. Prep burger toppings by slicing the onion, tomatoes and washing the rocket. Set aside. 2. Heat a griddle pan on high. 3. Cook the patties until desired doneness. Allow to rest. 4. Grill the portabella mushrooms with a light brushing of olive oil until just done. Season. 5. Assemble the burgers by using the portabella mushrooms in place of the usual bun. 6. Top with a patty, avonnaise, tomato, red onion, and rocket. 7. Enjoy with a side of fries or a green salad. To make the avonnaise: 1. Combine all ingredients and mash together until smooth. Season to taste.

or the past decade Glenmorangie’s Private Edition series has offered whisky aficionados a series of intriguing single malts, and Glenmorangie Allta, the latest from the Scottish Highlands, is no different.
Unlike the fruity and floral Allta, this Three Ships single malt is made from heavily peated barley, ensuring a bold palate of peat and smokiness tempered by sweeter fruit notes and a smooth finish courtesy of a decade spent maturing in older American oak casks.
In the “Allta” – Scots Gaelic for “‘wild” – Glenmorangie’s director of distilling, whisky creation and whisky stocks Dr Bill Lumsden, turned to wild yeasts growing on the distillery’s own Cadboll barley for inspiration. After cultivating these wild yeasts, Bill used them in fermenting the same barley and distilling it all into a memorably fragrant spirit enhanced by maturation in ex-bourbon casks.
Johnnie Walker White Label Game of Thrones
Winter is here, and even though the onscreen battle for the Seven Kingdoms is finished, that doesn’t mean Dad can’t
still come face to face with a White Walker. This limited-edition blend from Johnnie Walker sees the famous “Striding Man” donning a uniform of armour to join the ranks of the Night King’s army. It’s also a whisky that’s blended to be sipped ice cold and storing the bottle in the freezer reveals a hidden message inscribed in temperaturesensitive ink. In the glass it’s an enjoyable dram that’s uncomplicated and approachable – completely unlike those pesky White Walkers.
“Yeast’s influence on taste has been overlooked for years, but it’s an area ripe for exploration,” explains Bill. “With a nose of biscuit, baking bread and floral notes, and rich tastes of vanilla, orange syrup and sweet chilli, Glenmorangie Allta opens up compelling possibilities for the future of Scotch whisky.”

B
elgium may be the traditional home of the waffle, but here in Cape Town we’ve several dedicated waffle cafes that turn this archetypal street food into an anytime treat. Discover the delightful lightness of the classic Brussels waffle, the sugar crunch of the traditional Liege, and there’s even a hip spot for glutenfree vegans to get their waffle fix.
The Belgian Waffle House
Strand’s beachfront waffle cafe has a simple recipe for success. Belgian owner Evi
Tubex makes a classic Brussels waffle from her grandmother’s recipe – light, fluffy and crisp at the edges. Leavened with fresh yeast, and using fresh eggs and milk, the waffles have all the simple goodness of the street snack from her home country, and you can choose from an array of 86 different toppings. On the sweet side a runaway favourite is the chocolate mousse topping made with real Belgian chocolate, or go savoury with a full-on American breakfast waffle. All with a view over Strand beach.
Big Bay Waffle Company
Tucked inside the Eden on the Bay centre, Big Bay Waffle Company is a favourite local post-surf or beach-walk hangout. True to Belgian street food culture with traditional imported waffle irons, it’s a family-run cafe with Maria Nikolova at its heart. She has developed recipes for two classic types of waffle: the Brusselsstyle old-fashioned, and the Liege, soft, buttery and dense with crunchy chips of pearl sugar in the batter that caramelise on the edges. Choose your own combo of sweet toppings – Belgian chocolate gelato is a must –
or go for a savoury plateful, such as the Chilled Amigo, with grilled chicken, guacamole, salsa and sour cream.
Jessy’s Waffles
Even if you’re not vegan, this cool cafe in Dunkley Square, Gardens is the place to come for dessert. Jessica Berry creates an enticing menu of sweet and savoury waffles that are both vegan and gluten-free. “I love feeding people and I always valued nostalgia.
I wanted to sell something that makes people happy,” says Jessy. She uses a special combination of tapioca, rice and chickpea flour and describes her waffles as crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. Dairy-free ice cream, vegan mozzarella, and cococaramel, keep all waffles and toppings vegan-friendly and delicious. The current best-selling waffle is The Frittafle, a cheesy (vegan) courgette base served with avocado and home-made beetroot hummus.

Stylish and functional Homeowners have been choosing the elegance of shutters over other window or door coverings for some time, but in recent years, technology has added a new, welcome aspect… shutters as powerful security WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
S
hutters have been around for some time, and they’ve been getting more and more aesthetically pleasing. No longer simply functional, they’re fabulous. Today, there are superb ranges, in different colours and materials, customised and, most importantly, effectively secure.
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
“When designing our security shutters, we prioritised not only the safety features but the aesthetic ones as well,” says Karina Palmer, interior designer and marketing director, AMERICAN shutters. These have the same appearance of traditional timber shutters… and the same practical safety features of traditional security barriers. Today, you can get them in three standard finishes – satin white, grey and charcoal, as well as custom colours. According to Anthony Mederer, MD, Taylor Blinds and Shutters, “Our ShutterGuard Security shutters are made from super sturdy aluminium and can be fitted to almost any window and door. The range is available in five standard colours – white, light grey, stone, bronze and anthracite – all of which have a matt finish. However, clients can request custom colours (at a surcharge). We’ve also introduced the option of a new textured paint finish called grain white.” According to him, their shutters have undergone stringent security tests and have a
specialised patented locking system that locks the shutters with a unique security key, as well as bolting the shutter in both the top and bottom tracks when it’s locked. Additional security is provided by the louvre lock pin that secures the louvre panel closed. Dave Meek, Earlswood Shutters, says his security shutters are similar in appearance to his PVC, wooden or aluminium ones, except they’re lockable (locks can be ordered in different key systems, master key, keyed alike, and so on). “The louvres in security shutters are reinforced, so it’s difficult to remove them as opposed to those in ordinary shutters.”
Ordinary vs security shutters “AMERICAN shutters’ Security Shutters are easy to operate without a tilt rod, thanks to their ‘gear tilt’ system hidden in the shutter framework,” says Palmer. “The louvres operate smoothly with a tight fit against the shutter framework and the interleaved shutter panels provide greater privacy, security and light block. The locked bolt system secures the shutter panels in place simultaneously at the top and bottom of the shutter panels, and the tamper-proof bottom and top tracks ensure that the shutters can’t be lifted out of place.” Both Taylor shutters and AMERICAN shutters can be installed internally or externally, and provide security, privacy, light and ventilation control.
“Earlswood’s Security Shutters are constructed from powder coated extruded aluminium profiles with stainless-steel hardware,” says Meek. “When correctly installed, security shutters form an almost impenetrable barrier from unwanted intruders. Compared to typical burglar guards, security shutters are significantly more secure.”
Other plusses
Security shutters are inevitably custommade. “In that way, they form part of the building and remain with the property when it’s time to sell – very appealing to any prospective buyer,” Meek says. “They’re also made of durable material and components which make them easy to clean – they’ll outlast any other window dressing. Louvres can be opened, closed or adjusted to control the amount of light, ventilation, visibility or privacy not easily achieved with any other window dressing. Shutters also prevent direct sunlight from damaging carpets, floors, and furnishings.” He adds, “During the day shutters can be opened up and stacked back to allow unobstructed views and easy access for entertaining. At night – or when you want peace of mind – shutters can be closed and locked, while the windows and doors remain open to allow cool air to move through the building.”

More good news for the residential property market
C
urrent economic and sociopolitical challenges aside, some “green shoots” of renewed activity have appeared in the residential property marketplace in certain regions, which is over and above ongoing, sustained activity experienced in various key hubs, says Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive, Pam Golding Property group. Retha Schutte, regional executive, Pam Golding Properties, Pretoria and Centurion, concurs, saying that well-priced properties are experiencing increasing activity, while units in popular Menlyn Maine continue to be
snapped up by urban professionals and other aspirant homebuyers. In addition, sales in mixed-use developments in the Pretoria region have surprised on the upside over the past six months.
Notably, while the Western Cape remains the top-performing major region overall, KwaZulu-Natal is showing the most resilience in the upper price band.
Another area which continues to experience sustained activity is the rapidly expanding North Coast in KwaZulu-Natal, which with its close proximity to King Shaka International Airport and proliferation of secure lifestyle estates, major business node in uMhlanga, and abundance of good schools, continues to attract local buyers as well as large numbers of up-country homebuyers.
Sandra Gordon, senior research analyst, Pam Golding Properties, points out that Cape Town and Nelson Mandela Bay continue to outperform South Africa’s national average of 4,3% with house price growth of 7,5% and 5,3% respectively. “It’s also interesting to see that the rebound in house price growth in the Northern Cape continues to gain momentum, at 3,39% for the year to date (Jan–Nov 2018, Lightstone).”
This guarantee a must-have
“E
mbarking on building renovations or building a new home without a comprehensive contract, including stipulated construction guarantees, is very dangerous.” That’s according to attorney PJ Veldhuizen of Gillan and Veldhuizen Inc., who have represented many clients involved in legal battles with building contractors who, despite having been paid, have failed to pay third-party subcontractors and subsequently gone insolvent. The unpaid third party subcontractors in turn refused to complete the assigned work, for obvious reasons.
The stereotypical tale of a builder mismanaging cash flow and leaving subcontractors and owners high and dry in the middle of a building project can easily be avoided with what is known as a contractor’s guarantee. This is usually provided by an insurance company, and will guarantee that the contractor will perform as undertaken in terms of the construction contract or principal building agreement (PBA). “If you’re paying in advance for services, you need to have insurance, otherwise you’ll find yourself without a chair when the music stops,” warns Veldhuizen. These guarantees can protect the owner
from many common and costly matters which may arise during a building project, such as the contractor failing to: • provide the materials or goods for which a payment has been made. • achieve the performance specifications set out in the agreement. • rectify a defect. • pay subcontractors for work for which the payment was made. On the other hand, an owner should also provide guarantees that he will pay when he is called upon to do so, as per the agreement. This is the quid pro quo which should be demanded by the contractor.
Darling Green Estate launches
T
he first eco-estate on the West Coast has launched in the quaint village of Darling, about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Located on the outskirts of Darling, adjacent to the Darling Golf Course, it comprises 499 residential opportunities, with various housing options to suite different lifestyles
and budgets, says Bridget Uys le Roux, agent, Seeff Darling. Erf sizes start at 875m2 and the next size up is 1,200m2. There are also large erven ranging from 5,000m2 to 1ha available. Property owners will have three years to build. The houses are available in various designs, from two- to luxury four-
bedroomed homes, all in a Cape vernacular architectural style. The estate will be fully secure with 24/7 access control and CCTV cameras, providing peace of mind in a healthy environment. It will be fiber-ready, allowing high-speed connected living in every way. Property owners will also have access to the rest of the 500ha estate, for mountain biking, horse riding and walking, as well as membership – which is included in the monthly levy – to the adjoining Darling Sports Club, which includes bowling, tennis, and access to the nine-hole golf course. The estate enjoys access to quality education like Darling College, a private primary school offering preprimary to Grade 7, which is just 550m from the estate.

Rethinking retirement A host of options for senior accommodation is now open to people over 50

T
he proportion of South Africans aged 50+ is projected to grow to over 15% by 2050. With people generally living longer, local property experts find the demand for senior housing rapidly increasing as well as drastically changing in type and style. “Retirement now is a very different concept from what it used to be,” says Berry Everitt, CEO, Chas Everitt International property group. “It’s common to find people still working or even starting new business ventures in their 60s. Consequently, many are not ready to move to what we traditionally think of as old age homes or care centres until they are over 75.” Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive, Pam Golding Properties, agrees. “While people may be retiring or semi-retiring, they certainly don’t want to retire from life. They want to be able to use this new phase as an opportunity to travel, be social, and engage passions they had to put aside while pursuing their careers and bringing up their children.”
EVERGREEN BROADACRES
The demand now is for retirementtype housing that meets these new lifestyle needs in one way or another.
Trending
Not everyone can afford to buy into an estate or a retirement village. Everitt says there’s a growing number of seniors organising themselves into “communes” where they share a large house with other seniors, and organise help with meals, laundry and transport. “We’ve also seen a rise in demand for freehold properties that have ‘granny flats’ or garden cottages and can comfortably accommodate more than one generation of a family,” says Everitt. Many families find it convenient and more secure to share one property, as well as the running costs and child-care responsibilities, between working parents and grandparents. At the very top end of the market, realtors find many seniors selling their luxury homes to relocate to luxury apartments in buildings offering the amenities of a five-star hotel. “Major trends also include the integration of a senior housing component into many of the new lifestyle estates,” says Everitt. These homes appeal to seniors who are ready
to scale down but still want access to estate facilities like golf courses, clubhouses and wellness centres. In the middle upwards income bracket most clients seem to prefer purposebuilt retirement villages. Says Nadia Aucamp, broker and manager, RE/MAX All Stars Gauteng, “People want to feel safe to walk the streets within the complex and have on-site health-care facilities, peer group interaction, and catering facilities.”
Coastal BLOK’s groundbreaking independent living concept EIGHTONN in Sea Point is an excellent choice for those wanting to retire to the Atlantic Seaboard without giving up the lifestyle to which they’ve become accustomed. On the West Coast, both The Village at the Langebaan Country Estate and Langebaan Manor Retirement & Lifestyle Estate promise a fully supported retirement lifestyle for active seniors who also want the peace of mind of having a frail-care and assisted living centre close by.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS • Careful scrutiny of the type of scheme is critical as each option is intricate and governed by various rules, laws and regulations. • Buy from a reputable developer with a track record of success in similar projects. • Check for additional monthly costs for services, levies and the like. • Check to see that all the advertised facilities that attracted you to the development have already been built and are running.
NEGESTER ONRUS
In Hermanus, retirees can enjoy a comfortable retirement in a stunning setting, with essential medical care and leisure activities on their doorstep. Popular developments include Negester Onrus, Onrus Manor, Kidbrook Place, and Golden Harvest. Further up the coast on the banks of the Keurbooms Estuary, Plettenberg Manor has a range of different accommodation options, lifestyle offerings and care options. Royalston Coastal Wildlife Estate in Port Elizabeth is located in the suburb of Colleen Glen, extending south towards the ocean, and comprises a fully-fledged 1,000ha wildlife reserve but with the conveniences of everyday living. The lifestyle village for over 50s is currently underway. According to Kim Peacock, broker and owner of RE/MAX Dolphin Realtors, the demand in KwaZulu-Natal is ever-growing and usually exceeds the supply. Popular developments include Rob Roy Lifestyle Retirement Village, Lazuli Coastal Retirement Estate, Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village and Shoreline Sibaya, as well as the Hibiscus Retirement Village on the South Coast.
Countryside Smaller countryside towns located within and hour or two’s drive from a city are also sought-after among those preferring quiet and peaceful surrounds. Porterville in
the Swartland, for example, have security complexes popular among retirement buyers, for example Lemoenkloof, Dodeka and Tamariskia. Also in the heart of the Swartland, Fonteine Village in the Klipfontein Farm Lifestyle Estate in Malmesbury offers a variety of quality accommodation options with social and health-care options to suit all needs. The Bushveld region of Limpopo is well-liked for its moderate climate and has several retirement developments, like Kolobe Retirement Village & Wildlife Estate and Die Oog. The beautiful town of Howick in KZN has in recent years emerged as a popular retirement destination with developments such as The Ambers and St Johns.
Inland Development powerhouse Rabie has added Oasis Life to their portfolio, with Clara Anna Fontein Lifestyle Estate in Durbanville, and estates in Century City and Burgandy Estate to follow later this year. Awardwinning Val de Vie Evergreen in Paarl is another top choice. De Plattekloof Lifestyle Estate, set on one of the top-three areas of Cape Town’s northern suburbs, offers a fivestar lifestyle for over 50s. On the edge of Durbanville is Buh-Rein Retirement Village, offering independent and assisted living apartments.
The Zevenwacht Lifestyle Estate outside Stellenbosch has also recently introduced unique retirement living including lifestyle homes, independent living apartments and a care centre with assisted living suites and frail-care rooms.

Quadrant Gardens in Claremont, Cape Town, is another promising upmarket retirement development designed for over 60s and due for completion in July this year. In Gauteng, Waterfall Hills Mature Lifestyle Estate near Midrand is a modern lifestyle concept designed for today’s mature generation. Aimed at the over 50s, Heritage Mature Lifestyle Estate is another development near Modderfontein offering modern units in a secure environment with healthcare services which are provided by TruCare Age-well Solutions. La Vie Nouvelle Retirement & Wellness Village in Broadacres, where holistic wellness will take centre stage, is due for completion later this year. aunched last August at the award-winning Buh-Rein Estate in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, Buh-Rein Retirement Village has proven popular with over 100 apartments already sold.
Buh-Rein Retirement Village sells 100 units, with independent living and assisted living apartments priced from under R1m

The retirement village is open to those aged over 50 years and includes 461 one- and two-bedroom apartments in buildings of three storeys each – that include lifts. It offers both independent living units and assisted living units, and sales have been made up of a combination of these, mostly to buyers from Cape Town. The first residents are set to move in during August this year. Riaan Roos, CEO, Multi Spectrum Property (MSP) group of companies, the visionary behind Buh-Rein Estate, describes its goal and progress, “Both the independent living apartments and the assisted living apartments that we have on offer at Buh-Rein Retirement Village are priced from R919,900. Most retirement schemes currently on offer in the Cape cater only to the uppermarket segment – in direct contrast with the fact that retirees need to stretch their available funds. We believe that Buh-Rein Retirement Village addresses this issue by offering well-priced sectional title ownership properties. “Work is progressing at a great pace, and we expect our first residents to start moving in on 1 August, with more of the apartment blocks coming on line just a month later. All medical services will be available to our residents from 1 August, and the kitchen will also be ready to cater for them. The gatehouse will be 100% complete with the security and access system installed by 15 July, as well as the security system for the village. The gatehouse will include hobby areas – a workshop for woodwork, and a studio for handcrafts such as pottery and knitting,” he says. “All of the specialised landscaping will be completed by 15 July. We’re planting large trees (among others) in courtyard areas where residents can read or relax with friends, in addition to strategically placed fountains. We’re also developing a doggy park where residents can take their dogs – for both pets and owners to socialise.” The fact that the care centre at Buh-Rein Retirement Village, run by Medwell SA, includes options for both frail care and memory care households (10 each), is a huge bonus for those looking for dementia care for family members. Bookings for the frail and dementia care will be open from 1 July, and the care centre will be fully operational from 1 October. A dementia bureau is included for patients and their family members, for guidance and a
clear understanding of what to expect when a decline in mental ability occurs. Residents in the independent living apartments have access to primary health care clinic services once a month by a registered or staff nurse at the care centre, five days per year (per unit) recuperative care at the care centre at no additional charge (Ts & Cs apply), 24-hour Call4Care monitoring and emergency alert services, and 15% discount on permanent accommodation in the care centre. Permanent residents will also receive priority if they need to move to the care centre, subject to availability. Other services include 2,5kg of personal laundry twice per week; 5kg of linen laundry once per week; two hours of domestic service twice per week; and four main meals (per unit per month) at the à la carte restaurants within the clubhouse which need to be prebooked. Those in the assisted living apartments will have access to all of the above facilities and 16 main meals (per unit per month) at the à la carte restaurants (prebooked). Adds Roos, “Construction of BuhRein Retirement Village’s clubhouse has recently been completed. It’s set to feature two restaurants, a heated swimming pool, wellness salon, hairdresser, beautician and massage therapy, gymnasium with shower facilities, deli, library with internet access, bar/refreshment area, courtyard with central water feature and ample seating, lapa with indoor and outdoor braai facilities, and a function hall which can accommodate 500 people. “This is besides all the offerings of the greater Buh-Rein Estate itself, which include a Bossa family restaurant, swimming pool, open-air gym, 10km jogging trail, 24-hour security, camera surveillance and a multifunctional sport field. A shopping centre with Checkers as anchor tenant is set to commence construction later in 2019 and will be completed by October/November next year, which will bring even more convenience within easy reach,” he says. “We’re excited to be bringing this facility to Buh-Rein, and as with the rest of the estate, Buh-Rein Retirement Village keeps the real needs of its residents in mind. MSP has adopted the latest international trends and incorporated them into the scheme, such as the state-of-the-art dementia care facility, heated indoor therapy pool, and activity-orientated gymnasium.” A fully furnished two-bedroom show apartment is available for viewing on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00, Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00 and Sundays from 11:00 to 17:00.
