Alcohol-based Popsicles have been a runaway success overseas, but the PJ Pops mark the first time a locally produced wine Popsicle has hit the shelves. The fact that they’ve been created with the much-loved wines from Franschhoek estate Haute Cabrière is all the more reason to celebrate. When the PJ Pops launched last month it was with two unique Popsicles: one made from Pierre Jourdan Méthode Cap Classique, and another from Pierre Jourdan Tranquille, the cellar’s popular blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

alking into The Cousins, you step out of Cape Town and into a small slice of Italy. It’s got the atmosphere of a family trattoria, one that the locals eat at, serving unpretentious food the way it should be, with the owners greeting and chatting with customers. Simone Briganti and Andrea Biondi, cousins from Emilia-Romagna, on the east coast of Italy, opened the restaurant in Barrack Street four years ago and have made a name for themselves with their fresh home-made pastas.

ating healthy means different things to different people, but there is definitely a groundswell of interest in the low-carb approach. Tasty WasteNots isn’t specifically a Banting or Paleo recipe book, but follows similar principles of healthy eating and is ideal for those who want to dive straight into the recipes, learning about nutrition along the way. Nutritionist Sally-Ann Creed is familiar to Banting followers from her collaboration with Tim Noakes on The Real Meal Revolution. Jason Whitehead is a restaurant consultant and private chef who had his own restaurant, Freres Bistro, for two years. He says, “Freres Bistro was traditional French cuisine rich in cream and butter, and when the Banting book came out, it just kind of worked together, so I was the first to offer a Banting low-carb, high-fat menu.” When Sally-Ann visited the restaurant they discovered a shared vision of what real food meant to them, and the idea for a book was born. “The main thrust of this book is simple,” says Sally-Ann. “It’s all about getting back to basics, eating singleingredient foods, real food, food that your grandmother would recognise.” There are no colour-coded lists of good and bad foods, just the proviso to cut out sugar, grains and seed oils. At the launch Jason cooked us several recipes, including a stunning Irish-

coffee-braised lamb shank with ginger pumpkin mash, and even a sugar-free dessert in the form of a beautiful chocolate orange mousse. Back home the trickiest thing was getting to grips with coconut flour’s astonishing powers of absorption, but otherwise recipes are easy to follow and tasty. As part of the back-to-basics approach, there are creative tips on using vegetable peels, seeds and stalks for really frugal environmentally friendly eating, plus a section on feeding pets the healthy way. The book has beautiful photography from Claire Gunn, and includes wine-pairing tips throughout from Stellar Organics wines, whose range of top quality, organic, sulphurfree wines made on the West Coast are in demand internationally.

“In Italy, a trattoria only serves the local food of that town,” says Simone. “It’s one way that we have kept our food culture intact.” They make their lasagne the way it is done in their home town of Cesenatico, with green pasta and subtle layers of bechamel, bolognese sauce and just a sprinkling of Parmesan. They are also very firm about the sauces they serve with the six different home-made pastas. “Everything in Italian cooking has a logic, a pattern. Tagliatelle, the widest pasta, is best for a bolognese sauce. The larger surface absorbs more flavour and wraps the sauce,” says Simone. “For ravioli,

you need something that doesn’t overwhelm the flavours of the filling, so butter and sage is the perfect sauce. We are famous for not compromising. Our menu is what Italians eat.” It’s hearty, generous food and really does transport me back to Italy. For starters, we go for chalkboard seasonal offerings of asparagus, served simply with melted butter and Parmesan. The cozze gratinate – mussels in their shells tucked up with a breadcrumb, herb and chilli topping and baked – is a delicious way to highlight the flavour of the mussel without drowning it in a rich sauce. The pasta is the main event here, although there are meat and fish mains too. We enjoy the tagliatelle bolognese, which is rich, deep and satisfying, and the restaurant’s speciality: tagliolini with a cream, thyme and mushroom sauce, expertly tossed at the table in a huge half Parmesan wheel to give that extra seasoning of cheese and theatre. Dessert after all that is pure overindulgence, but the tiramisu is worth it: substantial, creamy with a kick of espresso that has us scraping the glass clean.

hen choosing a good school for a child, most parents realise that it’s vital to make preparations far in advance. The same goes for where your home is located in relation to the school your child will be attending. Finding a home near a school is something families need to keep in mind when purchasing property. This is especially true as school catchment zones affect property prices as well as potential enrolment in the school of choice.

Lindsay Beck, branch manager, Pam Golding Southern Suburbs, says properties near sought-after schools are always in high demand. It’s a good idea to get a head-start before your kids reach school-going age. “For parents with school-going children it can be a crucial decision that could yield a solid longterm investment. It also means a shorter commute and less time wasted sitting in traffic. Having neighbours with children at nearby schools also contributes to a strong sense of community,” she says. From a parent’s point of view, living near a school is a major plus for the family.

“We’ve lived directly opposite Danville for the past 15 years and chose our home based on the proximity to a good school. Our choice to live opposite Danville has worked out very well, and we are reaping the rewards now,” says Bruce Nevin, a parent of two daughters who attend Danville Park Girls’ High School in Durban. Living opposite the school has furthermore erased worries of transport and parking, and saves time. Because properties that are closer to schools are generally more in demand, they tend to achieve higher prices. “Properties that are situated within a short walking or driving distance to a preferred school will be popular and in demand. It is fair to say that such properties could attract higher sale prices,” says Charmaine Powell, sales manager, Chas Everitt Umhlanga. However, Powell says to bear in mind that immediate proximity to a school can also have its cons, like high traffic in the area and parking congestion in the mornings and afternoons when parents are dropping off and collecting their children.

But the location of good schools when purchasing or renting a home is also crucial particularly for children attending government schools where there are catchment zones. “For example, there are several very good government schools in Rivonia, Bryanston and near central Sandton – which makes these suburbs in high demand,” says Charles Vining, MD, Seeff Sandton. The most popular property choices are in Sandton and its surrounds where there are cluster homes and houses. Being close to your school of choice is not only convenient, but in terms of property value it yields better returns. “In past years, it has become evident that suburbs in which top schools are located, perform much better than suburbs where these schools can’t be as easily accessed. This is clearly illustrated in some areas where properties close to top schools are priced up to 40% higher than in neighbouring suburbs. Purchasing property close to soughtafter schools in Joburg would therefore be a good investment, whether you are a parent or an investor,” says Terry Swart, national general manager, Seeff.

lifton started life as a summer seaside escape for Capetonians, with simple bungalows clustered on the shore above its sheltered sandy beaches. Today, it is home to some of South Africa’s most desirable real estate. Those once simple bungalows have been transformed into lavish homes and apartments, but the magnificent ocean views and beautiful beaches remain the focus. The area’s four sandy coves are the playgrounds of chic locals and international visitors all summer, each with its own character – from sporty First Beach to family friendly Blue Flag Fourth Beach.

Even summer crowds don’t detract from the joys of beach living, as one resident commented, “Living right on the water, I love the feeling of not being hemmed in, there’s nothing to obstruct my view of magnificent sunsets and the ever-changing ocean. I have privacy, yet also the comfort of human presence in close proximity.” To get away from it all, the most private villas are at the top on Nettleton Road, where grandstand views over the ocean, swimming pools and spacious villas, more than make up for the longer climb down to the beach.

Quaint pedestrian passages connect the beaches with Victoria Road above, twisting steeply between the houses so that residents have no need for a gym for their step exercise. Many houses and apartment buildings have private underground parking, but parking can be an issue for those without, especially in summer, when the beaches attract visitors from afar.

Clifton is purely residential. The only restaurant is The Bungalow at Glen Country Club, where there are also tennis courts and a bowls club. Residents head to Camps Bay for more eateries and nightlife, or to the V&A Waterfront, Green Point and Sea Point in the other direction, for an endless choice of upmarket shopping, sports facilities and entertainment.

Agent commentary Q: What types of properties are available in the area? A: Clifton is the country’s topranked suburb with properties priced to as much as R150m and more at the top end. Although there are still some older apartments and houses below the R10m to R15m mark, these are quite rare. Apartments, especially newer units and those with stunning views, can sell for upwards of R8m for 58m2. Luxury apartments on the sea side of Victoria Road, though, can range to as much as R45m for 400m2, reaching levels of R112,000 to R146,465 per square metre in Eventide. Luxury villas start at around R30m and can range to R150m and more for large homes in Nettleton Road, the most sought-after address in the country.

Q: What can buyers expect to pay for property? A: Clifton’s seaside beach bungalows start from around R25m for a small unrenovated bungalow, to around R40m for a bungalow at the water’s edge, and over R100m for newly built bungalows positioned on The Ridge with private parking. Houses start from around R15m for a house which is landlocked and located on “the steps”, between Kloof and Victoria Road without any parking, and ranges up to around R150m for a Nettleton Road villa, the most sought-after address on the African continent. Clifton apartments range between R10m for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom mountain-side apartment, and up to R100m for a new, upmarket seaside, four-bedroom, fourbathroom apartment with direct access to the beach.
