The trio of wine farms in Upper Blaauwklippen Valley is a hidden Stellenbosch gem

K

nown for its crisp air and tranquillity, the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley is also home to three boutique wine farms nestled in valleys and mountain ranges. “The upper Blaauwklippen Valley could just be Stellenbosch’s new trump card. Here, a vein of fine Syrah runs from Waterford to Kleinood, through Keermont and De Trafford at the top of the valley,” says Roland Peens, director of Wine Cellar.

Kleinood

In 2000, Gerard and Libby de Villiers discovered a piece of land nestled between the Stellenbosch Mountain and the Helderberg. Originally a fruit farm that had seen better days, the family reinvented it and established vineyards and built a winery. In 2008 they moved in and today, 10ha of the 22ha land is devoted to vineyards and 2ha to olive trees. The winery is, of course, the heart of the farm and no viticultural or oenological effort is spared to produce wine that is honest and elegant.

THE KLEINOOD OLIVE ORCHARD

De Trafford

De Trafford is situated on the Mont Fleur farm at the top of a dramatic valley. The original farmland was bought by the Trafford family in 1976, but it was only in 1992 that the winery was established and in 1994 a small vineyard was planted. Today, De Trafford Winery creates wine that is of only the highest quality fruit and conveys the personality and the uniqueness of the area. The property is still owned by the Trafford family with a small team of dedicated workers.

In 2003, Mark and Monica Wraith moved from Gauteng to the Western Cape and bought two adjacent farms which now make up Keermont. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre, Keermont makes wines that reflect the wonders of place with the focus on achieving natural, well-balanced vineyards. For this reason, they try to use less chemical fertilisers, fewer pesticides and to irrigate as little as possible. They produce 72,000 bottles per year of naturally made, terroir-specific, handcrafted wines.

Paris, Cape Town The Moveable Feast brings a hip Paris bistro vibe to Kloof Nek Road WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

P

aris is a moveable feast according to Ernest Hemingway, and a slice of it has arrived in Cape Town. Channelling the spirit of an old-school French bistro, The Moveable Feast on Kloof Nek Road, upstairs from Power and the Glory, combines those classic elements of red-velvet banquettes and marble-topped tables with hip faceted mirrors and eclectic flea market finds, a Kandinsky-inspired secret dining room, and a neon-lined bar with an open-topped piano upstairs. With careers in the French music industry followed by opening successful Japanese eateries back in Paris, owners Vincent John Soimaud and Raphael Wallon are creating a welcoming space that looks set to become a favourite local hang-out. “Here we’re trying to keep the simplicity of the traditional

Paris bistro, the comforting aspects,” says Vincent John. It’s all about comfort food, everyday food you can meet friends over without having to wait for a special occasion. Think steak frites, moules, and beef tartare. But there’s nothing old-fashioned about the vibe, which is a light and breezy cafe by day sitting out on the curving, window-lined, closed verandah, with the upstairs bar becoming inviting and laid-back cool at night, with live music or a DJ. On Saturdays, the music buzz spills into the dining room with a curated vinyl evening. On a chilly winter day, a thick pot of hearty French onion soup was the perfect warming starter, savoury and comforting, generously floating with toasted parmesan on baguette slices. Slow-cooked springbok daube, rich and tender, blends South African

flavour with classic French treatment and a side of potato puree mops up the juices. The beautifully light Parisian gnocchi heralded sprightly spring flavours – made with flour, not potato, with juicy prawns, sugar snap peas in their pods and a lively lemon sauce, it’s one to go back for. There are a few Asian touches, as in the quail dish sauced with a sweet soy reduction and served with fresh greens and pickled radish. A whole wood-fired cauliflower, lightly dressed with sun-dried tomatoes and parsley is another sustaining classic that could be shared starter or main. Finishing with a simple apple tarte fine, all light crispy pastry and buttery apples, you soak up the Parisian vibe even as the buzz of Cape Town and the Lion’s Head views keep you grounded with a foot in each city.

Charge your glasses! This Heritage Month raise a toast to the rich history of Cape Town’s Noon Day Gun WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

I

FLAGSHIP WINEMAKER GERHARD SWART

t’s something of an in-joke among Capetonians, chuckling at the wide-eyed startle of tourists as the Noon Day Gun booms across the city. And, as the puff of smoke from the rump of Signal Hill floats away on the south-easter, it’s a rare local who doesn’t instinctively check their watch to ensure it reads bang on 12.

Today, six days a week, it’s an audible reminder of the city’s seafaring history. And for those fond of their tipple, a useful sign that, with the passing of noon, it’s a respectable time to pour a drink. With South African heritage being celebrated this September, why not make it one of these…

The daily firing of the 18-pounder, smoothbore muzzle-loaders dates back to 1806 when sailing ships in Table Bay needed to set their chronometers to allow for accurate navigation at sea. The cannon was originally fired from the Imhoff Battery, which used to stand in front of the Castle, but the guns were moved to Lion Battery in 1902, presumably, once the city dwellers had grown tired of a cannon being fired in their midst!

This approachable white blend is made for early drinking, so don’t bother putting it away for a special occasion. A blend of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, the grapes are sourced from dryland vineyards in the Swartland, as well as coastal vineyards from Elim to Lutzville.

Flagstone Noon Gun

Fermented in stainless steel, it has fresh acidity, a smooth mouthfeel and a palate packed with melon, pawpaw and citrus

notes – an ideal lunchtime companion for summer salads and roast chicken.

Noon Gun Brewery

When the guns signal beer o’clock, give this new craft brand a try. While their brewery is on the shores of False Bay, far from the boom of the gun, the quartet of beers from brewmaster Arno Mathee pay tribute to this noisy Cape tradition. Most interesting is the heavy-hitting 18-Pounder Session IPA – it’s packed with hops, though the 4% alcohol make it one of the lighter IPAs on the market. Not so the Muzzle Loader Weiss (5,2%), which is lightly hopped and fragrant. There’s a Smooth Bore Lager too for summer sipping, along with the Gunslinger Kolschstyle “hybrid” of lager and ale.

Off the beaten track

We explore some of the best family escapes that South Africa has to offer WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

T

THE MARLOTH RESERVE

Time in nature is such a gift to oneself, soul food, a reconnection with the things that matter, and a reminder of the need to protect our most precious environment DAWN JORGENSEN, THE INCIDENTAL TOURIST

he Western Cape is brimming with beautiful destinations, fabulous road trips and scenic escapes, so the toughest part of any holiday is deciding where to go next. We asked a few well-travelled writers and bloggers to nominate their favourite off-the-beatentrack experiences and sought out unusual accommodation options for a getaway with a difference.

charm. “It’s a superb small town to visit with kids,” says Lauren, who loves that you can walk everywhere.

Nature & adventure

Writer Richard Holmes looks for laid-back, family-friendly escapes on his return from far-flung research trips. “Wild Olive Farm ticks all the right boxes,” he says.

For those looking to be closer to nature, travel writer Dawn Jorgenson suggests the Green Mountain Trail. A fully guided, four-day slackpacking trail in the Overberg staying in comfortable accommodation, it traverses 60km of Cape Nature’s Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, private farmland, and the Groenlandberg Conservancy. “We learned about the admirable conservation efforts being undertaken in the area and allowed time for introspective appreciation of nature.”

“The river is on the doorstep for kayaking and swimming, while the beaches, shops and restaurants of Stilbaai are just 10km away down a good gravel road. The traditional fish traps at Skulpiesbaai Nature Reserve are always entertaining at low tide, while the resident eels in a pond at the tourism office are surely one of the weirder tourist attractions in the area. You can even feed them by hand!”

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary with its 20 rescued donkeys is an essential stop for both of them, and between the waffle shop, art galleries, restaurants, wine estates and the tranquillity of Temenos’s gardens, there’s something to offer all ages.

Digital nomad Lauren Manuel, though, finds Swellendam to be a surprising thrill-seeker haven. “Everyone imagines that Swellendam is all small-town charm and old-world history, but we’ve actually discovered it to be a great adventure hub.” She recommends micro lighting and kayaking at Umshanti, 12km from Swellendam, and hiking or mountain biking in the Marloth Nature Reserve.

Family escapes Both Dawn and Lauren enjoy visiting McGregor for its Victorian country

Unusual sleeps Babylon’s Tower Shepherd Huts are reintroducing the simple romance of the traditional wooden shepherd’s hut on cast-iron wheels and you can’t get a lovelier setting than this working apple and pear farm in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Handmade by Overberg Joinery Works, the huts are fitted out with a double bed, kitchen and bathroom with solar powered electricity and running water, combining comfort with away-from-it-all tranquillity. For an injection of retro cool in the Elgin Valley, the Airstream trailers at Old Mac Daddy add a quirky design element to the trailer

sleepout vibe, with add-on rooms accommodating families in the forest resort environment, which includes a lake, swimming pool and restaurant, plus mountain trails to explore. Take to the indigenous forest canopy of the Garden Route at Teniqua Treetops, where the ecofriendly treehouse accommodation is a haven for nature lovers with entrancing birdwatching and a true wilderness feel. Comfortable tented bedrooms with kitchens and bathrooms, take glamping up a level to look out over the treetops of the ancient Outeniqua mountains.

Luxury retreats “Cederberg, home of rooibos, craggy ochre rock faces, San art and long mountainous treks”, is a favourite escape for food and culture journalist Ishay Govender-Ypma. “I recall a very memorable stay at Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness retreat. It’s one of those fantastic splurge getaways where you can leave all cares behind – excellent meals and wines, spa treatments, guided drives and walks; they take care of every detail.” To get even closer to nature, book the Star or Sky suite at Kagga Kamma reserve. Luxurious open-air rooms under the stars are nestled among rocks for a night alone in the wilderness. If that’s too far on the wild side, their cave suites at the main lodge are built to blend into the surrounding rock formations with a raw rock feel tempered by luxury furnishings and gorgeous views.

My business neighbourhood Natural skincare brand Eco Diva opened its first store in De Waterkant WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

A

proudly South African range of natural organic skincare products, that is veganfriendly and cruelty-free, Eco Diva recently opened its flagship store in De Waterkant. The serene space features an eco-friendly refill station, so you can re-use your Eco Diva jars and bottles. Owner Nicole Sherwin tells us more about the brand. Q: How did your business start? A: With absolute passion. My passion for health and wellness was inspired by a lifetime mentorship from my father, Dr Philip Sherwin, who is a homoeopath, naturopath and acupuncturist. As the editor of Simply Green magazine and contributing editor for various other health and wellness publications and websites, I was researching and sharing all aspects of wellness. The Eco Diva journey began with my segment on SABC3’s Expresso Morning Show as “Eco Diva”, their DIY cosmetic chef. I created and demonstrated natural recipes for skincare, health, home, babies and animals every Thursday morning for two years. Many viewers would

tweet me asking where they can buy the products from the recipes I was making, so I worked with two different biochemists and created formulations that are now part of the Eco Diva range. The rest is history. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I have a Danish furniture business in the area, so it made perfect sense to open the shop where I was already established. I’d chosen De Waterkant in Cape Town because it’s such a lovely, busy hub of interesting people and decor and furniture shops. It seemed like a natural transition for Eco Diva. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Through much searching and quite a lot of investigation as to the best position in Cape Town that is trendy, hip and happening. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Lots of great shop frontage, beautiful bay windows and a gentle and calming setting for a natural product range. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Not cheap, but definitely value for money as the location is really central and close to the V&A Waterfront. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’ve got Loading Bay, Origin, Nap, the Cape Quarter shopping

centre, Bootleggers, Skin Renewal Spa, Sofacompany.com, Kids Living, Ground Art Cafe, the Capital Mirage Hotel and many other great neighbours. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: It varies. We have around 10 to 60 people per day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We definitely do and are incredibly excited about this next phase. We are rolling out 100%-natural, miniconcession stands that have the same look and feel as our flagship store. These stands will be in various locations around South Africa and in spas, beauty salons, yoga studios and like-minded health and gifting stores. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, our online shop and blog is super busy and we love interacting with customers all over South Africa. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: By far our Crème Brûlée Body Butter. Besides feeling like silk on your skin, it has so many multi-use benefits – amazing value for money.

How much care is enough? With the rise in retirement development numbers, innovative models are being introduced to spread the financial load of care facilities WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK

O

n the list of must-haves for any retiree will always be on-site care facilities. Retirees need to ask the right questions, and ensure they’re getting what they need… and are paying for.

In-home care

Generally speaking, the medical care, nursing staff and management are outsourced to professional service providers such as MyCare and TotalCare, but equally, there’s a greater focus on in-home care. It’s not only believed to be a healthier option for residents to remain in their homes while cared for – retaining that all-important independence – but it’s obviously less costly for the developer and therefore the residents. Leigh-Anne Aitken is a director at MyCare and is well aware of the care concerns of retirees, in particular as to when or whether care facilities will be built. “We don’t believe in a frail-care centre per se, but the option to have home-based care, overseen by a registered nurse based in the care centre. The care centre is much smaller than traditional frail care, but we have doctor’s consulting rooms, where, for example, an audiologist visits one day a week.”

Accessible medical facilities for all

It’s also making good financial sense for developments to have on-site medical facilities which are available to those outside of the retirement development. It’s impossible to predict the care needs of residents at any one time, so allowing others to access the facilities – while prioritising residents’ care – certainly spreads the financial load.

Full care

And then there are developments which provide full medical care. Here you’ll get everything from frail-care units and assisted-living units, to specialised Alzheimer and dementia care and nurses on 24-hour call. For many retirement villages, the ability for a retiree to be able to call for medical assistance is standard.

Preventative health care

For many, health-promoting facilities are important. Whether it’s long boardwalks through nature, cycling and hiking routes, yoga, gym or swimming pools – these matter. Particularly today, when developments are billed for over 50s and over 55s, who are relatively young people with many years of good health ahead of them – they want facilities in which to ensure that longevity.

Online dementia support Livewell Villages launched an online support group to assist people caring for loved ones with dementia WORDS & IMAGES: SUPPLIED

A

Facebook support group that aims to provide a safe and accessible space for individuals and families impacted by Alzheimer’s and dementia, to connect with each other and occupational therapists experienced in dementia care, has been launched by Livewell Villages, a dementia care facility in Cape Town and Joburg.

Livewell Villages launched the free online Facebook support group to provide a space where people can engage with others who are involved in dementia care or caring for a loved one at home. Livewell’s occupational therapists, who have experience in caring for people with dementia, provide expert commentary and feedback to supplement the participants’ discussions.

“With increasing numbers of South Africans enjoying internet access and some 18 million of us now active on social media according to the Digital in 2018 annual report, we believe that through embracing this technology we will be able to help more people to cope with the demands of caring for loved ones with dementia,” says Ivan Oosthuizen, CEO, Livewell. “We see a tremendous opportunity for providing support and advice for caregivers all over the country, if not the world, whenever they feel the need to connect through this innovative Facebook support group.”

The support group is proving popular, providing a platform where people can share their stories with others who are in a position to empathise with them, or exchange advice and encouragement. People are able to interact on the subject of caring for a loved one with dementia, and hopefully feel a sense of comfort knowing they are not alone in their experiences. To help protect the privacy of members, this is a closed group and people need to request access. To join, visit facebook.com/LivewellVillages.
