The best SA has to offer W

ith more than 100 galleries and exhibitors from around the world, including countries like Angola, Belgium, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Italy, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (from 15 to 17 February), is now officially the largest contemporary art fair in Africa. For the seventh edition, organisers have pulled out all stops to ensure that local and international visitors (more than 18,000 are expected to attend) can experience the best of contemporary African and international art.

The extensive programme includes live performances, talks, conversations with participating artists, guided tours and walkabouts. Gallery Night, on the evening of Friday, 15 February, is an opportunity for visitors to go beyond the main exhibition. Simply hop on the bus from the CTICC and enjoy an evening of chauffeured galleryhopping through the Cape Town city bowl and Woodstock. Participating galleries include: 99 Loop, blank projects, Ebony/ Curated, Eclectica Contemporary, Everard Read/Circa, Gallery Momo, Goodman Gallery, Smac, Smith, Stevenson, WhatIfTheWorld, Worldart, A4 Art Foundation, Iziko South African National Gallery, Greatmore Studios, and Ava. Special sections at the fair include Tomorrows/Today and Solo. The former is a curated cross-section of the most exciting emerging and under-recognised artists from Africa and around the world, as selected by Investec Cape Town Art Fair curator Tumelo Mosaka. A R50,000 prize will be awarded to the most promising and dynamic artist. Solo explores the effects of the digital world on our lived realities, with an eclectic mix of young talent exploring the unstable relationship between physical and digital space, the real and hyperreal.

hether you’re a winelover or not, fine wine is a good diversifier in any investment portfolio, believes Ken Kinsey-Quick, founder, Fine Diamond Fine Wine Investments.

that are matured in professional cellars, with market prices tracked to give an accurate valuation of each investor’s portfolio. Wines can be sold at any time, or accessed for one’s private collection.

“Top wines, stored properly, can yield a return of 15% to16%, year-on-year, which is phenomenal compared to other asset classes,” adds Roland Peens, managing director of respected wine merchants Wine Cellar. But investing in wine isn’t about stashing a few good bottles in the bottom of your linen cupboard. The secondary market in South Africa is small, and “in South Africa we’ve never really had a culture of cellaring wine for the long term”, says Roland. “Also, the wine hasn’t been of the quality needed for investment.”

Fine Diamond offers a different investment avenue. Investors purchase shares in a private company, with a minimum investment of R100,000. Those investments are then used to purchase a portfolio of wines for the company, which are cellared in bonded London warehouses. Fine Diamond invests roughly one-third in South African wines, and the remainder in international producers, predominantly age-worthy Bordeaux.

shareholders as well as new shareholders,” says Ken. “Alternatively, their share of the wine holdings can be sold on the open market, or the wines claimed for their own cellar.” While returns are subject to the whims of the market, Ken says current investors have already seen an 11% return in the past six months, largely thanks to holding a substantial amount of Kanonkop’s Paul Sauer 2015, which received a 100-point rating last year. Perhaps it’s the year to take a whirl – and a swirl – in the world of fine wine investing?

When investors want to exit the company, “their shares can be sold to existing

All the more reason to seek out expert advice, for the right selection of wines and proper cellaring are crucial to realising value in the future. “As a wine brokerage we get offered fine wines on a daily basis, but nine out of 10 times we’ll turn them away because they haven’t been stored properly,” says Roland. Along with bespoke investments, Wine Cellar’s solution is to offer unitised collections of carefully selected wines

Tickets are available from Computicket (R150 for adults; R110 for students, children and pensioners; R285 for a weekend pass) or at the door (R180 for adults; R130 for students, children and pensioners; R380 for a weekend pass).

Rocking a classic at Orphanage Cocktail Emporium In the world of beverages, one standout serve has been celebrated for as long as we can remember…

A

part from being a threeingredient serve, the Angostura Rock Shandy is also the ultimate summer refreshment; an iconic SA recipe; the first choice in South African restaurants, country clubs and cocktail bars; and an ambassador for modern home entertaining. Simply a combination of equal parts lemonade and soda over ice with those essential few dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters to give it that extra depth of flavour, it’s easy enough for anyone to mix this iconic serve. In a slice of Cape Town steeped in history, Orphanage Cocktail Emporium offers “marvellous mixtures, music and company”, Mondays through Saturdays… and the Angostura Rock Shandy is a staple on the menu. Orphanage bartender Leighton Rathbone has been bartending for nine years. His first encounter with the rock shandy was at his first-ever job where

T

he unobtrusive doorway of 103 Bree Street (next to Burger and Lobster) is easy to overlook, but a whole world of food and wine awaits when you climb the stairs into this historic warehouse building. Chef Matt Manning found the space after many months of searching for a new home for his One Ingredient interactive cooking experiences. He has established his Chef’s Studio on the top floor and opened his first restaurant, a vibey bistro called Grub & Vine, below. The other half of the building is home to private wine merchants Frogitt & Vonkel, with a laid-back wine bar and upstairs tasting room. Our evening started with a personal wine tasting with owner John Woodward. He specialises in wines from boutique winemakers, here and abroad, or reserve barrels exclusively bottled for him. The wine bar is a unique opportunity to enjoy wines by the glass that you otherwise might never encounter. Each glass comes Spanish style, topped with a tapas bite of baguette and charcuterie or cheese, and John and the team share stories and recommendations. A pool table, board games and cheese or charcuterie platters make for a relaxed evening’s entertainment.

The Chef’s Studio is a gorgeous interactive kitchen with eight work stations and a long table seating 24, designed with Matt’s interactive cooking experiences in mind and kitted out with top-of-the-range professional equipment by Siemens for whom he is brand ambassador. Home to Matt’s One Ingredient events, it’s also available to hire for private functions. At Grub & Vine the short menu changes often, encouraging you to choose from two to four courses. Sit at the pass to watch Matt and sous-chef Esteve Beyers at work, or by the sash windows looking over Bree Street. Piping hot cauliflower cheese arancini with a mushroom sauce started us off, then a chargrilled broccoli salad, its smokiness offset by goats’ cheese and pear. Matt’s flair for building intense flavours without overcomplicating things comes to the fore. As he says, it’s honest food, done well. Meltin-the-mouth West Coast hake was beautifully contrasted with shards of crispy bacon, smoked mussels and mussel velouté. Then succulent lamb rump with pommes Anna, aubergine and mint. An equally intense dessert of almond cake with honey custard, blackberries and honeycomb completed a truly satisfying meal.

the patron had to explain the recipe to him, which, in the end, was wrong. Nine years on, he is a whizz behind the bar and says he drinks way too many rock shandies himself “with a hell of a lot of Angostura bitters to my taste”. Looking quite a way into the future, Leighton envisions the Angostura Rock Shandy to be no different to the serve you see today. He says, “I can see Angostura having the perfect mix available to make it with, just the right blend of soda and lemonade leaving the bitters up to the drinker – maybe in a pre-made bottle with a button that when you push it adds drops of Angostura bitters to the drink to the user’s preference.” He adds that his second favourite cocktail of all time would not be possible without Angostura aromatic bitters – “the Old Fashioned, but A Moscow Mule hits the spot every now and then too”.

Let there be light There are a number of effective, inexpensive design tricks which significantly increase the light in a dark room WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGES: SHUTTERSTOCK

D

ark rooms – particularly in the increasingly more compact homes in which we live – are unappealing and stifling. We’re not talking mood here, but a lack of light – natural or induced. Why not employ a few trade tricks to lighten up the space and simultaneously lighten your mood. Colour is a good starting point, and with the extensive range of paint shades available today, light needn’t necessarily be white, but a favourite pale tone. Light colours reflect, darks absorb, so a light wall colour impacts in more ways than simply lightening the surface you’re painting. Your floor, too, can have a major impact on the feel – consider painting, staining, bleaching, or giving your floor a concrete finish in a light colour. A white ceiling is a major reflective asset.

Software

It’s essential to maximise natural light sources, as Tinks Robinson of Peppergreen Interiors suggests. “Remove or cut back encroaching outdoor shrubbery or overgrown trees that block light from entering the room. Rid your windows of heavy curtains, and opt for sheer fabrics which let light into a room in a wafty, airy, cool way. Heavier lining or block-out fabric can be used on the back rail, and can operate independently from the front sheer when needed. Choose light neutrals.” The less fuss, the more space is freed up, and the less light it blocks. If necessary, install a longer curtain rail – as near the ceiling as possible so as to visually stretch the space upwards – so the curtains don’t block the window at all. Colour choices on furniture also make a difference – keep the fabrics fresh, white or light coloured. Likewise for the flooring – if you can’t alter the floor or don’t want to remove a dark fitted carpet, throw over a pale rug. If you have large, dark indoor plants, consider replacing them with lighter, softer, less dense ones.

Hardware

Structurally, skylights and sky-tubes obviously introduce light, and a skytube particularly, can be less expensive to install than you imagine. But there are many other elements which don’t involve structural changes. Mirrors are highly effective as reflectors of light, and Tinks suggests hanging a large mirror opposite a window or door, across the room from your light source. “Other ways to make mirrors work include hanging an array of different sized mirrors, for example, up a staircase. You could also consider mirroring an entire wall – this will enlarge a room, and introduce loads of reflected natural light.” Large, cumbersome pieces of darkwood furniture suck the light, so reduce the amount of furniture, and ideally, choose light and clean unfussy pieces. Choose white or light-coloured, wall-mounted shelving over a wall of fitted bookshelves. Remove clutter, and replace fiddly or oversized collectables with single, light pieces. Clutter can also include untidy black cabling – change it to white, tape it to your skirting board or tie them together neatly with Velcro. If you have a solid door which is often kept closed, consider changing the door to a glass one or one with glass panels. Choose your artificial lighting with care, and aim for a natural look. Tinks suggests installing pendants in varying sizes hung at different levels. “This trick defines an area which lacks punch, while simultaneously bringing in extra light if needed. Filament globes on short nondescript bases can be placed on shelves to brighten up a dull area. Spotlights on a track can be swivelled and tilted at varying angles, aimed at dark areas or features.” Consider soft perimeter lights rather than harsh overhead lighting.

Joining forces leads to a world-class development in Somerset West IMAGE: SUPPLIED

A

recently concluded joint venture between Evergreen Retirement Holdings and the Uvest Property Group will see the development of Evergreen Sitari, a premier retirement village, set within the Sitari Country Estate in Somerset West. This joint venture represents a partnership between two prominent South African property brands. Uvest Property Group is the master developer of Sitari and managers of the largest privately owned residential portfolio in the Western Cape. Evergreen Lifestyle is South Africa’s premier national retirement brand with a reputation for building and managing exceptional villages in some of the most beautiful parts of the country. Between them, Sitari and Evergreen have earned multiple local and international property awards. The combination of Sitari’s unsurpassed surroundings and Evergreen’s retirement expertise is set to produce a world-class luxury retirement lifestyle. The Sitari Country Estate spans 192ha and offers a range of luxury and premium apartments, village homes and country homes, as well as signature and country plots. The expansive estate also boasts a plentiful supply of orchards, vineyards, trees, parks and herb gardens, and a 22ha wetland,

interspersed with some of the finest contemporary rural architectural design.

will also have access to all that the larger Sitari Country Estate has to offer.

“We created Sitari as a self-sufficient suburb catering to a wide variety of lifestyle requirements. We always had a vision for a premium retirement component, and we know that Evergreen Lifestyle, with their established track record, will further complement our unique property offering,” says Francois Smit, chief operating officer, Uvest Property Group.

The Evergreen Sitari aesthetics will be in line with the architecture of the broader Sitari Country Estate, designed by Hennie de Villiers Architects.

Evergreen Sitari is the eighth village in the Evergreen portfolio and underscores the company’s commitment towards providing the ultimate in retirement living. Thriving communities of happy, healthy retirees at their existing villages attest to the fact that the Evergreen Partnership for Life promise is true to its word. Evergreen Sitari will be home to 500 properties, ranging from apartments to luxury free-standing homes. Professional health care is provided on site and includes everything from home-based care to frail care. The first homes are scheduled to be released for sale in the first quarter of this year. Evergreen Sitari will have its own dedicated entrance, facilities and amenities, including a fully-equipped lifestyle and care centre, but residents

“Evergreen Sitari will have an identical architectural theme to the estate as a whole, reinventing the Cape Dutch vernacular that allows a free-flowing and harmonious atmosphere throughout the estate. Low walls ensure that every property becomes an extension of the greater estate and emphasise the aesthetic appeal,” says De Villiers. “The percentage of South Africans over the age of 60 is set to double to 15,4% by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. The current market does not make provision for such a steep rise in demand. The Helderberg basin is a highly sought-after retirement location, but across the entire area there’s a shortage of accommodation for seniors. We’re therefore confident that there will be significant interest in Evergreen Sitari as retirees are increasingly looking for upmarket retirement accommodation – notably physical security, financial peace of mind, continuous care, and a sense of community. Evergreen Sitari will proudly offer all of these, in abundance,” says Cobus Bedeker, MD, Evergreen Property Investments.

Muizenberg A hodgepodge of cultures, quaint shops, and a beach that stretches for days, Muizenberg is one of the Southern Suburbs’ most inspiring and affordable options WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

I like the mixed communities that live here, the easy access to a range of outdoor activities, and the bohemianism that still weaves through the community. It’s quite a roomy place to live. In addition there are three artisan bakeries between my house and the sea! DAVID BELLAMY, BBELLAMY & BBELLAMY

F

rom select Victorian and Edwardian seaside resort to surfer’s paradise, Muizenberg life has always centred around its long sandy beach, the child-friendly waves and warm waters of False Bay a compelling attraction. Over the last few years a major revamp of the beachfront and historic mile of Main Road has re-energised the whole area, restoring tired facades and public areas, the regeneration spreading back into the side streets and old centre where little cafes, shops and bakeries create a bohemian vibe. Textile designer David Bellamy chose the area back in 1996 for its European seaside character, the warm-water swimming beach, the estuary now visited by flamingos, the eponymous mountain and Silvermine Nature Reserve behind. “I think the quality of life is very high, especially for anyone with a bouncy young dog who needs three walks a day.” Having lived in Muizenberg for 30 years, Glendyr Dade cannot think of anywhere else she’d rather be. “Where else would I find a community such as ours? We care for each other and are integrated across colour, culture and ages. We have a magnificent mountain to hike on, a beautiful vlei to paddle in, and the ocean to swim, surf, bodyboard, and fish.”

Property Properties range from one- or twobedroom apartments and cottages to

grand seaside villas from a bygone era. A rich architectural heritage from its days as a glamorous seaside resort includes houses designed by architect Herbert Baker, Victorian and Edwardian cottages and houses, and substantial 1930s villas. Modern times have added low-rise apartment buildings, retirement villages and Mediterranean-style houses around the waterways of Marina da Gama. “Muizenberg is the perfect place for all ages, starting out or slowing down,” says Glendyr. “It’s family-orientated with shops, schools, the beach and restaurants all within walking distance of wherever you live.” She appreciates the warm and supportive community with loads of volunteer organisations making a difference with everything from security to shark-spotting and beach clean-ups.

Schools Muizenberg has its own public primary and high schools, a Montessori school and a selection of preprimary options. Other popular options in the “Deep South” include Bay Primary in Kalk Bay, Sun Valley Primary in Noordhoek, Imhoff Waldorf School, and the Fish Hoek public schools. It’s also within easy driving distance of the prestigious Southern Suburbs schools along the M3 or M5.

Explore

Surfers Corner is the place to go for the Muizenberg beach vibe, iconic colourful beach huts, surf lessons, surf shops, coffee and seafood. “What I love about Muizenberg from a surfer’s perspective is that it really is the surf nursery of SA,” says Roxy Davis of Surf Emporium. “It’s the perfect learn-to-surf beach – warm water, easy, accessible, gentle. There’s something for every day of the week. Depending on the waves I can take out my long-board, SUP or short-board.” Surf Emporium also has a collaboration with the yacht club to SUP in the estuary, surrounded by bird-life and nature. And if the kids have ever had enough of the beach, the Muizenberg waterslide park is popular for birthday parties together with the putt-putt next door. The old Victorian streets of the town centre to Palmer Road are worth exploring for quirky, individual shops and cafes, or meander along the coastal Main Road for old-world grandeur at Casa Labia and history at the Rhodes Cottage Museum. Walking along the Muizenberg catwalk to St James, you get views of the historical mile across the train tracks as well as the perfect opportunity for whale and dolphin spotting. Other easy walks can be found around the shores of Zandvlei with all its bird life and watersports. Or head up to Silvermine Nature Reserve for easy and more challenging hiking.
