High on the Montagu Pass above George is Herold Wines, which takes full advantage of its unique mountain terroir to craft wonderful cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc, Weisser Riesling and Pinot Noir. “At between 650m and 700m above sea level, our vines are rooted at a higher altitude than most other South African vineyards,” explains owner Nico Fourie, who says that winter frosts, cooling coastal winds and yearround rainfall “results in a protracted growing season. The farm’s distinctive terroir puts it into a class of its own.” The Herold Pinot Noir is particularly worth seeking out: bright cherry notes on a foundation of subtle oak. Firm acidity allows it to age well and develop further over time. De Krans winemaker Louis van der Riet has also tapped into the region, sourcing grapes from the Waboomskraal valley at the foot of the mountains for its Garden Route label. The Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2017 blends fresh notes of green pepper, tropical fruit and subtle minerality, and has bagged a fourstar Platter’s rating for the past three years. The Garden Route Pinot Noir 2016 is on the lighter end of the Pinot spectrum – cherries and strawberries, rather than forest floor. Beyond Knysna, the coastal terroir offers ideal conditions for cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, and the region is particularly known for its Méthode Cap Classique production. At Packwood Wine and Country Estate
between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, winemaker Vicky Gent offers a duo of bubblies, alongside awardwinning still wines. With coastal winds wafting through the 4ha of sea-facing vineyards, “the terroir speaks for itself in the wine,” says Gent, who has been making wine on the estate since 2013. “We promote sustainable practices in the vineyard, such as rain harvesting, compost-making, environmentally-friendly sprays and minimal till crop covers.” Aside from the bubblies, “our Sauvignon Blanc 2017 packs a punch
with exotic tropical notes and a refreshing finish,” says Gent. If you have the time, keep meandering eastwards: you’ll find delicious Syrah at Plettenvale, unwooded Chardonnay at Newstead Lund Family Vineyards, and more wonderful bubbly at Bramon Wine Estate. Be sure to leave some space in the boot!

he stunning view was the most striking feature as we entered ON19 restaurant at the top of the Westin Hotel. Sunset was long gone on the April evening when we attended the Shiraz- and fynbos-themed dinner, but the twinkling lights of the V&A Waterfront and ribbons of city traffic far below were mesmerising.
Culture meets cuisine Norval Foundation in Steenberg brings together art, culture and food in a picturesque setting WORDS: BELINDA MOUNTAIN IMAGES: CLAIRE GUNN & DAVE SOUTHWOOD
N
orval Foundation opened in Steenberg on 28 April, bringing a unique space to Cape Town dedicated entirely to art and culture, set against the backdrop of the Table Mountain National Park.
The Norval family are the founders and initial funders, aiming to make art more accessible to both local and international visitors. Designed by DHK Architects, the remarkable buildings feature world-class galleries, a sculpture garden, an outdoor amphitheatre for concerts, and The Skotnes Restaurant and Bar, named after acclaimed South African artist Cecil Skotnes. The restaurant overlooks the wetlands and gardens landscaped by Keith Kirsten International, but it’s the menu which really sets it apart. As my dinner companion remarked, it’s rare to eat dishes inspired by South African cuisine that are clever, sophisticated and nostalgic, without
descending into cliché. Leave the boerewors for your braai at home, and feast instead on starters like grilled calamari with sweetcorn mieliepap and chakalaka, or pork belly with Parisienne gnocchi, miso butter and soet wortels. All dishes are exquisitely plated and ingredients are sourced locally from small-batch suppliers, aiming to uplift local communities. At the helm of The Skotnes is executive chef Phil de Villiers, who previously led Primal Eatery, which was named Eat Out’s Best Steakhouse of 2017. Having lived and worked in Joburg and Pretoria for ten years, Phil remarked that he likes how adventurous Cape Town eaters are, and hopes residents, as well as visitors to our city, will enjoy his relaxed, yet stylish take on local cuisine. And enjoy it we certainly did. For mains, my partner savoured confit duck with quince and flavour-packed umngqusho, with hanepoot jus. I had a beautifully tender free-range beef ribeye steak with bone marrow, parsley pesto, and an especially tasty amabuthu cheese and tomato braaibroodjie. The dessert we chose was listed on the menu as “Japie se Gunsteling” and it turned out to be delicious malva pudding with roasted naartjie, marmalade caramel, burnt honey and macadamia ice cream. Afterwards, we took a stroll upstairs to the striking bar with its velvet sofas and eye-catching decor, and then popped our heads into The Homestead Art Collection exhibition to spot memorable works by Gerard Sekoto and Noria Mabasa. It is this unique mix of art, architecture, culture and cuisine that makes a visit to Norval Foundation memorable – as well as a welcome addition to our city.
Regular monthly dinner events here explore a single wine cultivar and one distinctive ingredient, becoming a highlight of the hotel’s flagship restaurant, and we were looking forward to seeing what new head chef Stephan Mandes had dreamed up for us on the fynbos front. With a background at renowned names such as Restaurant Jardine, De Grendel and the Mount Nelson, as well as winning The Ultimate Braai Master in 2014, chef Stephen has had plenty of experience on the fine side of creative dining. For the fynbos theme, he was inspired to bring in homely flavours from his Cape Town childhood, such as sour fig, smoked snoek and spekboom. Six excellent wine farms were represented, the wine poured with a generous hand throughout the evening. We started with a lovely cool climate Syrah 2012 from Elgin Vintners,
followed by an elegant Corder 2014 from Elgin Valley, which accompanied a puffed kingklip amuse-bouche. The wine that stole the show for us was the intense Ormonde Chip off the Old Block Shiraz from Darling. This was paired with an innovative sour fig salami, a thinly pressed paste of the fruit which showcased its sweet, salty character, plus a flowery hibiscus vinaigrette mellowing the saltiness and piquancy of the seed-crusted chèvre. A subtle Cape Malay influence came through in the herb and spice sweetness and honeybush gastrique of the intermediate snoek-en-patat course paired with Lammershoek’s The Innocent. Chef Stephen added interest to a classic springbok dish with acidic num num lifting a savoury chocolate jus, along with a classic Shiraz from Meerendal. Finally, we tasted the almost gluhwein spiciness of La Vierge Anthelia, a well-chosen foil to the apple cobbler dessert that concluded the gastronomic experience. The next dinner on Friday, 29 June, embraces coffee and Pinotage, promising intriguing combinations such as espressopoached kingklip and moerkoffie with rabbit and bacon lardons.

My business neighbourhood An outdoor gear store with a difference in the vibey East City WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

J
ust Like Papa brings together the best outdoor gear in an off-beat style that appeals to outdoor people. Owners Thomas Ferreira and Davide Locatelli-Rossi tell us about opening their innovative space on Harrington Street in Cape Town’s East City. Q: How did your business start? A: The idea came up after a long trip to Patagonia where the gear that we used and put to the test had failed. After a few drinks around the campfire and talking to friends, we realised there might just be a need for great outdoor gear.
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We wanted a space that didn’t restrict us, a retail shop that also had a work and car shop. Davide stumbled on a 1956 bank location in the East City and we knew we had hit gold. Q: How did you find your premises? A: A fter we’d combed Bree Street and the new up and coming parts of Cape Town, we found these areas too restrictive and unaffordable. We’d always loved the SAPS buildings behind Woodheads, so we ventured to the East City. We saw a to let sign, walked into The Bank and met Steven Harris, who has been passionately envisioning the growth of Harrington for decades. He took us on a tour of his premises. Next thing we knew we were sitting at his large desk and Just Like Papa history was made. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: You have to walk in to understand. It’s not a retail space, it’s an experiential space, a space we can mould into whatever we want, grow and experiment with new projects. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The East City has exploded since we moved in. We have been joined by Manuela Gray and Sins of Style tattoo studios and East City Cycles. Wulfchiptegnik shares our workshop. Lekker Vegan, Bootleggers and Kamili Coffee are across the road, old-school favourites New York Bagels and SurfaRosa welcomed us into their
neighbourhood. Barnet Fair and Nude Foods tie the street together. Up the road, Lefties and Raptor Room feed us on late nights, not to mention Dias Tavern. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Too high if you ask me, and too low if you ask the landlord! Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: Our space is a destination store first and foremost, but it really varies. We have large events and also quiet days. Friends come over for a beer, play a game of chess or get their knives sharpened, so we are never lonely. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Definitely, we expand every day, from our online store to our ambition to open in Joburg. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our online store launched in April. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our axes – we struggle to keep up with demand. Drip Drop is also a great seller: it’s a professional grade hydration system which is great for any type of training, and also works miracles after a long night of meetings around the fire discussing what is next for Just Like Papa.

components, as well as world-class leisure and sports amenities.
Most South Africans, whether holidaying on the island or reviewing investment opportunities, will be most familiar with the West and North Coasts, although the East Coast also offers a smattering of upmarket resorts.
The visiting Mauritius delegation also includes Caroline Leclézio, a legal and financial specialist from ENSafrica Fiduciary Ltd finance specialists, who will advise investors on the numerous benefits of business development on the island, including corporate and personal tax rates pegged at 15%, no capital gains tax, and government incentives available to foreign investors.
“The South-East Coast, however, is almost entirely unknown to the South African market and this despite the region being home to arguably the most beautiful lagoon in the world. It is with good reason, though, that the area has remained so pristine, charming and unspoilt,” says Diane Watkins, executive director, Barnes International Realty in Mauritius.
He says less than 20% of the gross land area will be developed. The remainder will be an unspoilt green lung, with construction dotted around numerous natural ponds and lakes.
Scores of South African companies, from the largest corporate to SMMEs, are already doing business in Mauritius, among them Investec, Woolworths, Aspen Pharmaceuticals, Medscheme, Standard Bank and Shoprite.

“Most of the land around the Blue Bay and Pointe d’Esny areas – the two villages that front the lagoon – has had a single owner for almost 300 years. That ownership was consolidated under the umbrella of the Compagnie de Beau Vallon Ltée some 97 years ago and remains intact to this day.” Watkins will be one of the leaders of an investment delegation that visits South Africa this week to introduce the South-East Coast to investors in Joburg and Cape Town. The primary delegates are from Barnes International and Compagnie de Beau Vallon Limitée, the developer of Pointe d’Esny le Village. Christophe Curé, group property manager, will represent Compagnie de Beau Vallon Limitée. Curé says the project was launched off-plan to the international market in March. It is Mauritius’ first integrated village development close to the ocean under the government’s Property Development Scheme and incorporates some 500 residential units, from apartments and penthouses to ultraluxury villas, commercial space, retail areas and hospitality and educational
Investing in property worth US$500,000 (about R6,355m) or more also comes with the benefit of permanent residence status to Mauritius. This is linked to the property and can be transferred to heirs through inheritance. Watkins says the new Pointe d’Esny Le Village lifestyle development is in a region that is arguably one of the most beautiful in the world, and unexplored by most South Africans. Apartment prices start at around R5,4m and investment options range to the most luxurious villas that top the development’s investment scale at just over R28m. The Mauritius Investment Delegation is available for consultation at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel (Corner of Rivonia Road and West Street, Sandton) tomorrow and Tuesday. The delegation’s Cape Town consultations will be at the Peninsula Hotel (313 Beach Road, Sea Point) on Thursday and Friday. small town that explodes into full-on holiday mode in peak season, Knysna’s beautiful lagoon and surrounds of aweinspiring indigenous forest are the heart of its attraction, with so much to do that the hard part is fitting it all into one holiday. “It’s a very relaxed lifestyle, we’re very fortunate to have every activity imaginable on our doorstep – extreme kloofing, boating, diving, fishing and mountain biking trails,” says resident Nikki Smit. “I also love that it’s very community driven, you know everyone.”

After the devastating 2017 fires, the town pulled together to rebuild and, like the surrounding fynbos and forest, it’s once again bursting with new growth and energy.
Accommodation Knysna has long been a favourite place for second homes, filling up in the December holiday season as everyone escapes the city to immerse themselves in lagoon and beach activities. From guest houses and B&Bs to luxury hotels and forest lodges, or holiday rentals and caravan parks, there is a huge variety of holiday accommodation and many different locations. This includes the new developments on Thesen Island with their waterfront marina feel, traditional holiday homes on Leisure Island, villas high on the hills around
Living in Knysna, we’ve got everything at our fingertips. On a normal day, we’ll do two or three different things: surfing, mountain biking, sailing if the wind picks up or kiteboarding, taking a boat out to sea, or hiking in the forest. The outdoor side has so much to offer within a relatively small area. JAMES TURNER, RESIDENT

the lagoon with stunning views, or hidden farms and lodges in the forest along the Garden Route. The whole area really does get booked up in peak season, with regular visitors booking up to two years ahead to be sure of their favourite spot. The Knysna Oyster festival (29 June to 8 July 2018) is another drawcard filling up all the local accommodation for the duration of the ten-day festival with its sports events, food and entertainment.

tubing, and when the wind pumps, switch to sailing or kite-boarding. “Boating is massive in Knysna. During the holiday season a big portion of our sales are impulse buys,” says James Turner of Fusion Power Boats. “People will go into one of our dealers to buy a water-ski and leave with a boat ready to take on the lagoon that afternoon.” Traversing the tricky waters of the Heads to reach the Indian Ocean is best reserved for experienced skippers, but the lagoon has more than enough space to explore and play, whether power boating, sailing or paddling. A sunset cruise is another must for the more leisurely explorer. Buffalo Bay is the perfect beach for surfing and safe swimming and play. “Everything is so accessible and family orientated,” says James. “We’ll go up-river to the Red Bridge to chill, the kids love swimming in the river,
and there’s fishing at all levels in the lagoon – they can spend hours catching cuttlefish.” The small tidal beaches around Leisure Isle in the lagoon are perfect for younger kids to play safely, and most days in Knysna are spent at least partly in and on the water.
Forest
Behind Knysna, the vast stretches of indigenous forest conceal hidden trails, waterfalls and endless adventure. The best place to start exploring is at one of the picnic sites, accessible by car. Jubilee Creek is in a cool forest valley beside a peaty stream with a 3km signposted walk to a waterfall. The Circles in the Forest trail starts from the Krisjan-se-nek picnic site and takes you into elephant country to a forest pool and a waterfall. Or sign up for a guided hike to go deeper into off-the-beaten-track forest. Mountain bikers and trail runners have endless forest trails to explore, the Garden Route Trail Park serving all abilities, or head to Harkerville with four trails to suit various levels. For those who love watersports and outdoor adventure, Knysna really does have it all.

Retirement options There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a purchase model – it’s all dependent on finance and the lifestyle you’d prefer WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
T
here are three key retirement models: sectional title, share block and life rights. Like any property or legal transaction, visit as many retirement developments as you can to compare apples to apples. Having said that, there are numerous variations on the theme, so it’s not that straightforward – everything is development specific, and within the same purchase model costs can vary considerably.
Sectional title
With sectional-title retirement options, the buyer owns the unit outright by means of a title deed registered with the Deeds Office. The developer carries no responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and cost management aspects once the development is sold. In this model, the onus is on the resident to care for their asset. The advantage? Capital appreciation like any other sectional-title purchase. Stefan Botha, director, Rainmaker Marketing, says, “Sectional title is proving popular with younger people who’re not yet at retirement age, but who see it as a good investment – they get a great rental yield until they want to use it for their own retirement purposes. On the other side, there’s a growing
segment of young people investing in retirement for their parents and want to see capital appreciation on that investment they’ve made.”
cheaper to acquire accommodation this way initially, it may prove difficult to sell down the line.”
Share block
“With greater life expectancy than ever before, one of the biggest concerns worrying older people is whether they will outlive their asset,” says Arthur Case, CEO, Evergreen Lifestyle. “With this model, you have a right to occupy the unit for your and your spouse’s lifetime, free of maintenance responsibilities.” Everything remains both an asset and the responsibility of the developer. When life rights terminates, the property reverts to the village’s owner – your estate will receive the original purchase price, plus a pre-determined percentage of the net profit (less certain pre-determined costs).
Though less used today, with share block you don’t obtain exclusive title to the unit you’ve bought, you own shares in the company which owns your home i.e. not a section of the building itself. In this way, costs involved can be minimised. To maintain the property, directors of a share-block company establish a levy fund to which you contribute to cover its running expenses. You receive a share certificate. Transfer duty is still payable on the purchase price to Sars, but the sale is not registered in the Deeds Office. Maria Davey, Meumann White Attorneys, says, “Today, this model is not a popular one for a retiree development. If a share-block company gets into debt and the property is attached and sold in execution, the use and occupation agreements will come to an end. As a shareholder, you have no real right over the property you occupy. Furthermore, finance to buy into a share-block company is not readily available, so although it might be marginally
Life rights
Life rights is not a property transfer, so no bond registration fees, transfer duties and VAT is payable. Life-rights units are usually more affordable than the other models – no capital appreciation, but no maintenance required, and it’s in the developer’s interest to maintain his asset well. In addition, life rights has a comforting methodology of levy transparency for two years ahead, which makes financial planning easier for the retiree.
