And this weekend is all about celebrating our creative people, with Cape Town and Joburg hosting events to showcase some of our best talent. In the Mother City today, you can attend the last leg of the Open Book Festival taking place at various venues throughout the CBD. Always a highlight on my calendar, this event brings together some of our best minds and encourages open dialogue and a love of reading. Find out more at openbookfestival.co.za.

hef Giorgio Nava has recently relaunched his Constantia restaurant with a new look, new name and new menu. Previously Carne Constantia, it’s now 95 at Parks, taking the varied Italian menu of his long-standing 95 on Keerom as a starting point.

Of the change, Giorgio says, “The new restaurant is for everyone; before it was for a specific meat-loving crowd. People like the variety we’re now offering and are going mad about our six-course menu of Italian specialities.” The main menu includes more home-made pasta dishes and salads ideal for lunches, as well as the excellent meat and steaks he is renowned for, although Giorgio says that the recent drought has had a devastating effect on his Karoo farm. Whereas he usually produces

much of his own meat, he’s currently sourcing from other trusted suppliers. The space is now light and bright taking botanical inspiration from the conservatory at the back, the idiosyncratic decor bringing a retro feel to the period homestead with quirky strips of artificial grass, billowing floral curtains, vibrant green gloss on the woodwork and 1930s futurist murals. Giorgio has always been uncompromising about staying true to traditional Italian methods and flavours. “My cuisine is North Italian. I’m from Milan, but I love to travel a lot, so I also have dishes from other regions of Italy. It’s not fusion; every dish is pure Italian.” The tasting menu changes every few weeks giving guests a chance
to explore the Italian way of eating and try dishes they might not usually order. This is generous, unpretentious cooking with good-sized portions. We started with a deconstructed insalata caprese (creamy burrata with tomatoes, capers, anchovies and olives), followed by grilled octopus on potato puree – a Southern Italian speciality recently added to the menu. The ravioli with a simple butter and sage sauce was filled with tender slow-cooked lamb. My best was the potato gnocchi sauced with an intense, hand-cut meat ragu – the real Italian deal. Osso buco was next, slow cooked with tomatoes until it falls apart. To finish, we had the simplest of desserts: home-made vanilla gelato with berries. The Italians really know how to turn excellent basic ingredients into a veritable feast.

t’s a lovely road, to borrow a line from Alan Paton, which runs from the Huguenot Monument into the hills. Leaving the village behind, the mountains of the Franschhoek Valley draw in until they’re almost close enough to touch, and by the time you meander up the gravel drive of Holden Manz Wine Estate you’re thoroughly embraced by vineyards and lofty peaks. Named for owners Gerard Holden and Migo Manz, this boutique estate hides quietly on the Green Valley Road yet is well worth seeking out for its focused range of predominantly red wines that showcase the wonderful terroir of this corner of Franschhoek. “The vineyard is where everything begins,” says Thierry Haberer, consultant winemaker, Holden Manz, who brings his global expertise and French training to the wines of this boutique cellar. The Holden Manz range is divided into a handful of categories, from “Reserve” to “Contemporary” and “Avant-Garde”. If you have a bit of extra money to spoil yourself, the Reserve Syrah is superb, redolent with spice, blackberry and elegant tannins from a full two years spent maturing in older oak barrels. The Contemporary range is more approachable, and affordable, with similar spice and dark fruit in the Shiraz, which is joined here by an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and fruity yet restrained Merlot. But things get most interesting in the aptly named Avant-Garde range, notably with the likes of the Visionaire. By and large, a classic Bordeaux-style red blend, a healthy dollop of Shiraz adds layers of interest and complexity. The “Big G”, meanwhile, is a tribute to the estate’s charismatic co-owner and the two Cabernets: Sauvignon and Franc. While the relaxed tasting room, with its sunny terrace overlooking the vineyards, is a fine place to discover the range of Holden Manz, you’re better off booking a table at the upstairs Franschhoek Kitchen. Here, executive chef Ricardo le Roux dishes up a modern bistro menu that pairs beautifully with the estate wines, notably the braised beef cheek with white bean and samp cassoulet. In warmer months, picnic hampers are available to be enjoyed at riverside picnic sites.
London calling The British gastro-pub has arrived on Bree Street with irresistible bar snacks and hearty pub grub WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

f you want to eat good traditional British food in the UK, it’s the gastro-pub you go to rather than a restaurant. “The gastro-pub scene in the ’80s and ’90s was about taking faded, old street-corner pubs and revamping them with young chefs and fresh, locally sourced food,” says Tim Scuddamore who has now brought the best of British to Bree Street at his Crazy Horse Gastro Pub. “When I moved to Cape Town in 2000, what I missed about the UK was the pub scene – the gastro-pub culture, hanging out in a place that was comfortable and casual, but where you could still eat great food.” With fellow Brit, Matt Manning, as consultant chef, The Crazy Horse menu is a short collection of British classics, starting off with a selection of bar snacks available all day. Forget tapas, these are old-school pub snacks, with plenty of oomph, that will get you through the big match together with a pint from the wide selection on tap. The Scotch egg is rich with meat and black pudding, the egg yolk runny and luscious. The pork scratchings are crunchy, crispy crackling dipped in a home-made mustard mayo, and the cauliflower cheese bites are superb.
Lunch is a short selection of specials, including the pie of the day (with meat slow-cooked to melting tenderness) with mash and gravy. The pie is made even better by the rare find of gravy made from scratch. With meat juices reduced and thickened overnight for concentrated flavour, it’s definitely worth splashing generously over the velvet-smooth mash. Gammon, egg and chips is a pub classic and here the juicy gammon steak comes with roasted pineapple, thick, hand-cut chips and home-made tomato sauce to dip. Everything is home-made at Crazy Horse, including the sausages, with a new recipe each week. The beef wellingtons have been a hit on the evening menu provoking severe “Fomo”. A limited number are made fresh each morning and when they’re gone that’s it until tomorrow. The weekly Sunday roast carvery sees families hanging out in the spacious button-back booths in the upstairs restaurant over board games, while downstairs in the bar there are darts, a big screen TV for the big matches and a laid-back pub atmosphere.

My business neighbourhood Wire-and-bead art producer, Streetwires, recently moved from Bo-Kaap to Woodstock WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
C
olourful wire-and-bead artworks have become increasingly popular with tourists. Streetwires employs 60 full-time artists and exports globally, producing custom designs for wholesale orders, and sells through a local shop where visitors can see the artists at work. Riaan Hanekom, general manager, tells us about moving the business to Woodstock. Q: How did your business start? A: One of our founders, Patrick Schofield, was inspired by a wire radio made by a local artist. Thinking this would be a brilliant idea for a community development project, he started the business in 2000 with Anton Ressel and Winston Rangwani. They envisioned a formal business structure that would be able to sell this kind of product internationally
to corporates and individuals, providing sustainable, full-time employment to the wire artists. Seventeen years later, we’re going strong and have a wide catalogue of in-house designs. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: We were forced to move because the Bo-Kaap building we were in was being redeveloped. We were trying to stay within the city centre but the space we needed was way too expensive. We found this place in Woodstock and decided it might not be a bad idea to move a little bit out of town. Woodstock is an up-and-coming, trendy, arty environment where we’re surrounded by other creatives. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I looked around for about six months through agents and by driving around. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The premises are big enough for us to house everything. It was important to be able to house the welding workshop within the studio and have our shop here too.
of old furniture, and more. It’s a happening, vibey spot. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: It’s quite expensive, similar to what we were paying in town. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: The first month was difficult, but it got better each month. We have perhaps 50 to 60 visitors a week currently. We have quite a few tour guides bringing groups and we’re putting up new signage to start drawing more feet from the street. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We want to create a fantastic shop. We would like to increase our production staff and expand our online marketing and sales. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: At the moment, our website is just a showcase. We plan to create an online shop in the near future. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Most of the people who visit are tourists, so the beaded animals are bestsellers and the trophy heads do well.
Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Opposite us is The Old Biscuit Mill and the Woodstock Gin Company. There’s an art studio above us and catering equipment below. There are so many different things all around us: Heartworks, Clementina Ceramics, restorers

The Voetstoots Clause A legal expert says the onus is on purchasers to acquaint themselves fully with a property’s approved building plans and its structures before buying WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK
T
here’s no obligation on the part of a seller to provide you, the purchaser, with current building plans, nor is it a standard inclusion in a sale agreement – there are simply too many issues to consider for it to be a standard clause. Maria Davey, Meumann White attorneys, says that since the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling in Haviside v Heydricks and Another in 2013, a purchaser can no longer accept that it’s implied in the sale of property that there are approved municipal plans for buildings and structures on a property. In the case, there was a dispute in respect of a structure on the property (garages) for which there were no approved building plans. The sale agreement concluded between the parties contained a Voetstoots Clause, upon which the court ruled that the seller was entitled to rely on to avoid liability. After all, the purpose of a Voetstoots Clause is to exempt the seller from liability for defects of which he or she is unaware. In the case, the purchaser’s claim failed as the court found nothing to suggest that the seller knew about the defect. Maria says this ruling serves as a warning to purchasers. “The onus is on the purchaser to acquaint himself fully with the condition, nature, location and plans of a property and its fixtures and fittings. If you’re unsure, investigate and ask. If any representations are made about the property, include these in the offer to purchase and ask for warranties if necessary – it could result in your losing the property to a more robust purchaser. But if the issue is important in your deciding to make an offer on a property, deal with it at the correct time – when you’re making the offer.
“If, for example, you want plans for the property, stipulate that the seller provide copies before transfer, then make sure they show the property as you saw it. Stipulate in the offer what you expect to happen if the plans are outdated, or if some structure is not on the plans. As the purchaser, you could include a clause in the offer to the effect that the seller warrants that there are approved plans for every building and structure on the property, and then also stipulate that if this is not the case, that the seller then obtain approved plans before transfer at the seller’s expense.” But what if alterations to the property are required in order to have the plans approved? Is the purchaser obliged to accept the altered property and proceed to take transfer? What if the seller cannot afford the alterations? The agreement could alternatively record that the purchaser reserves the right to withdraw from the sale within a specified time period if there’s an issue with the plans for the property, failing which he accepts it as is. Bottom line – a clause that obliges a seller to deliver “a copy of the available municipal plans” means just that. When that is done, the seller has complied with his obligation, whether or not all buildings and structures are on the plans.
TOP TIP: As a purchaser, be specific about what you expect, and as the seller, understand what extra obligations you’re taking on if you deviate from selling your property as it is.

hen someone mentions West Coast spring flowers, Darling is one of the first places to come to mind. The small farming town is known for the Darling Wildflower Show and the flower reserves on surrounding farmland that become a glorious carpet of colour in August and September. It’s on the map year round for overseas visitors and local weekenders, and while it retains its rural appeal and friendly village charm, it’s no longer a sleepy backwater. “We’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. Darling used to be the kind of place where people had a weekend cottage, whereas now a lot more families are living here and putting down roots,” says Dianne le Roux, who has lived in the area for 30 years. “It’s close enough to Cape Town to be able to commute, and a number of people do. Others find things to do in the town, like opening a restaurant or an artisan business. Tourism is quite big in Darling.” Within the town, artisans Darling Brew, Udderly Delicious Darling, Darling Sweet, and The Flying Pig charcuterie provide plenty of local flavour. Add to that an independent wine merchant, a thriving bookshop and a country museum and you can easily while away a day exploring.
“Our guests love that everything is within walking distance,” says Stephan Moser, Darling Lodge Guest House. “And the old village is just a gem when it comes to picturesque gardens and Victorian houses.” Visitors keep coming back to the area for the series of annual events on offer, such as the Darling Wildflower Show in September, the Rocking the Daisies music festival at nearby Cloof Wine Estate in October, and the Taste of Darling festival of beer, wine, food, music and art in April. And Darling’s very own theatre, Evita Se Perron, attracts weekend visitors as Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout, aka PieterDirk Uys, entertains with trenchant wit and cabaret flamboyance. But it’s the tranquillity and surrounding nature that attract permanent residents. “We wanted to be a quick drive away from Cape Town,” says Nina Monda, Maison de L’amour guest house. “Darling seems very far away, but yet is so close. We love the quiet village life.” And with the beach at Yzerfontein and the beautiful Langebaan Lagoon in the West Coast National Park a short drive away, and rolling farmland all around, Darling offers an enviable country lifestyle.
