ith the school holidays fast approaching, it’s time to start organising family getaways again. When I was growing up, the June holidays were filled with trips to places like Warmbaths, Umhlanga and Port Alfred. Even though it was a bit cold, we always had a great time exploring interesting new places.

On a sadder note, we were devastated to hear about the fires that ravaged Knysna and surrounding areas this week. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy.

Grabouw I get to live in the stunning countryside every day of the week, yet I'm just an hour’s drive away from Cape Town. I don’t find as many reasons to travel there these days, though; I have everything I need here! MICHELLE NEL, RESIDENT
he 219 judges at the Decanter World Wine Awards, announced in London last month, certainly have their work cut out for them. With more than 17,000 wines submitted for judging, winnowing the best from the rest is no mean feat. Unsurprisingly, they recognised two of South Africa’s leading wineries as among the best in the world, bestowing “Platinum – Best in Show” awards on both Klein Constantia and Paul Cluver Wines. The Elgin Valley is building a formidable reputation for coolclimate wines, and the 2016 Seven Flags Chardonnay from the Cluver family’s De Rust Estate was a worthy winner of the “Best Chardonnay” award. The Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay 2016 also walked away with a Gold medal.
to vintage changes to still produce wines at the highest quality,” says Paul Cluver, MD.
“All the credit goes to the entire Paul Cluver Wines team. This shows an understanding of our terroir with the ability to adapt

If Cluver is known for Chardonnay, Klein Constantia is famous for its sweet wine, Vin de Constance. So it’s little surprise that the Vin de Constance 2013 won the Platinum – Best in Show award for Sweet Wines. Known worldwide for its amber hue, floral nose and luscious palate, the Vin de Constance “is not only a stunning wine but also one of the most historic sweet wines in the world, having thankfully been resurrected in 1986 after a 100-year absence,” says Hans Astrom, MD, Klein Constantia. “We’re honoured and privileged to be the custodians of this truly unique South African wine whose legend continues.”
CBD Cape Town’s CBD is an interesting mix of old and new; there’s history all around you, but also modern developments and innovation – it makes it an exciting place to live
Winemaker Matthew Day must also be smiling, as 2013 was only his second vintage at the historic Constantia cellar. “Ideal conditions prevailed with moderate daytime and cool night-time temperatures,” says Matthew. “This together with a dry season ensured perfect ripening and raisining of the Muscat de Frontignan.”

he Bluebird Garage Food and Goods Market in Muizenberg has quickly taken Cape Town locals by storm. Taking place every Friday night in a rustic, postal plane hangar, the market is filled with an array of specialty foods, baked goods, artisanal delights, designers and producers.
proudly South African, with a range of handpicked South African wines, craft beers and a scrumptious food selection which includes a range of delicious doughnuts from The Donut Workshop, mouth-watering tacos and chilli poppers from Tacos Locos, sushi from Blue Marlin, fudge from Sweet Dreams and so much more.
The owners, Laura Watkins and Marcus Schutz, say, “It’s so incredible to be involved in a market that’s part of such a beautiful community and brings people together to enjoy their Friday night shenanigans all in one place! It’s such a pleasure to work here every Friday. We love all our traders, employees and all our supportive customers and truly enjoy spending our Friday evenings here.”
Bluebird Garage Food and Goods Market is succeeding at bringing the community together while also running a successful business.
It’s also perfect for the entire family. “We’re super dog-friendly and always happy to have pooches around. We also have a big jungle gym kids’ area so the little ones can run around while the adults relax.” The owners say the aim of the market is to bring together butchers, bakers and the T-shirt makers under one roof, and they have undoubtedly achieved that. Homage to heritage An open fire, nutritious food and generous quantities of creativity await at Homage 1862 WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

alking under the original broekielace veranda into Homage 1862 feels like stepping into another dimension – not so much back in time (although the double storey Victorian building dates back at least as far as the name suggests) as into a more harmonious space – out of Loop Street and into a timeless, calm and warm home away from home. The new open-fire restaurant was conceived by Kyle Krok and brought to life with chef Yael Lapiner and operating manager Daniel Klass. Old friends, the three shared the same vision of a down-to-earth, welcoming eatery serving tasty and nutritious food. “The name is about homage to our heritage in the historic building, but also to nature and to fire,” says Kyle. “Fire has brought people together for centuries.” Here open fire doesn’t just mean meat; in fact, the restaurant is particularly strong on showcasing vegetables cooked over the flames. The creative Earth platter, including the creamiest baked sweet potato with thyme butter and fynbos honey, would brighten any vegetarian’s day, and the succulent miso mushroom kebabs are a winner.
The menu is simple and unpretentious, with the main elements (meat or veg) cooked over the fire on a customdesigned grill, or flatbreads baked in the wood oven. “All our dishes have a variety of vegetables, grains and seeds – very nutritious,” says Kyle. The juicy butterflied chicken comes with root vegetable slaw with pomegranate, braaied mielie and home-made mayo, and the new winter menu features a fragrant coconut and lemongrass curry with braaied chicken, hearty soups, oxtail potjie and a warm woodfired vegetable salad with local burrata mozzarella. We ate in the bright conservatory at the back, with the exposed brick walls preserving the history of the building and hung with raku planters full of indigenous plants. Kyle worked with Art in the Forest to design planters and crockery, each reflecting his interior design inspiration of the elements and nature: earth downstairs, air upstairs. Moving upstairs to the welcoming lounge, coffee bar and broad balcony, where regular jazz evenings happen, we relaxed over cappuccinos in no hurry to leave. With Kyle’s design flair infusing every detail, plus tasty, honest food, Homage 1862 is a space to immerse yourself in.
The popularity of food and goods markets has skyrocketed in Cape Town and across the country, with more and more locals choosing to spend their weekends visiting different markets, something the Bluebird Garage Food and Goods Market has been able to capitalise on. The Bluebird Garage Food and Goods Market is open to traders who would like to have a stall at the weekly market, and by the looks of things, spots are being snapped up fast so be sure to enquire today. What are your plans this Friday? Make a trip of it and take a drive to Muizenberg and experience the atmosphere of the market that has everyone talking.

My business neighbourhood The latest sneakers from around the world come together at Lost Property WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: WARREN PAPIER
behind the name? Well, where was the one place you could go to find your lost property, or sneakers, as a kid? That’s right: Lost Property. Until two years ago I was operating my business from my parents’ house. As popularity and interest grew I set up a physical store. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Gardens made sense. The area is very trendy and close to everything. The store is just off Kloof Street. There's parking available as well, so it all just came together. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was searching on Gumtree and came across a retail space. I called the agency and the property I wanted was gone. I knew Gardens was the area the store needed to be in and it helped that rental prices were relevantly cheap for the area. I waited a few more months and another space popped up. This time I didn't delay and went straight to all the contract stuff.
L
ocal sneaker lovers strike gold when they discover Lost Property sneaker boutique in the Rheede Street Mall off Kloof Street. Owner, Zaid Osman, tells us the story behind his business. Q: How did your business start? A: It all started when I was about 15 when my family moved back from the US. People in South Africa would see the type of sneakers my brother and I were wearing and would ask where we got them. Eventually, we told them we could import them from the US; this pretty much started Lost Property. The meaning
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: For my first store, it’s perfect because it’s something I can handle and the experience has taught me a lot about retail trade. The mall is not the busiest but the Lost Property brand is strong, so most of our clientele have specifically sought out the store based on its reputation. The store is slightly hidden away, so it almost becomes a treasure hunt to find. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The stores in the mall include Joseph The Tailor – the best in the
business, Touch Nailbar, MacWave and a laundry store. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Between R4,000 and R12,000. Retail space on the outside of the mall is a lot more expensive than on the inside, as it’s more visible to passing trade. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: There's not a lot of foot traffic. Most of our actual sales take place online. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Something is currently brewing and will be announced soon, so stay tuned. The first store has taught me a lot about retail. The biggest challenge is to remain constant and to keep reinventing yourself. We intend to strengthen our online presence and focus on our own merchandise to expand the brand. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Online trade is a big part of our business and we ship products globally. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: A n Amsterdam-based brand, Daily Paper, which creates apparel with a distinct African flavour, and the Jason Markk sneaker cleaner – it makes your beat-up sneakers look brand new.

The smart home Technology is making it increasing easy to control your home electronics from any location using a mobile device WORDS: ANDRÉ FIORE IMAGE: ISTOCK
11 JUNE 2017
PROPERTY NEWS
T
here’s no end to the offerings on the smart home scene, and while many of us are still trying to master the TV remote, the gurus are dreaming up gadgets that make sci-fi look tame. Whether you bring in a professional or do it yourself, the possibilities are seemingly endless. Any device that uses electricity can now potentially be added onto a home Wi-Fi network and be controlled at your command. That command may be given by voice, remote control, tablet, smartphone or smartwatch. Besides a myriad clever tricks, home automation can have huge safety, security and convenience benefits for those who travel regularly, people with children at home and elderly people living alone. For the majority of people, a smart home requires professional planning, although manufacturers of consumer electronics are ramping up their product lines in the hope that home automation will finally become mainstream, and many products available at electronics stores and online can be self-installed allowing tech-savvy consumers to start off small. Thanks to smartphones, tablets and the many home automation apps now available, people are increasingly able to control countless online devices from anywhere with unprecedented ease. For example, you can control thermostats, the alarm system, lights and appliances all from your bed or even from the airport – anywhere your mobile device has a good internet connection.
5
You can receive instant alerts when there’s motion around your house or a security breach and know whether it’s caused by pets or intruders, you can see who is in or around your home, you can unlock doors automatically as you approach, light a path for night-time bathroom trips and so much more.
When planning a smart home, it’s important to balance complexity with usability. Consider tasks you already do routinely and then find ways to automate them. Ask yourself these questions before installing your system: • What kinds of components are part of the smart home? Are they basic, such as a light dimmer, or more imposing, like an alarm system or video camera? • How intuitive will the smart home be to a non-user? • Is the device actually fulfilling a need or is it just a fancy and potentially frustrating toy? • How many people will be required to use the system? • Who will operate the system, maintain it and address failures? • How easy is it to make changes to the interface? For example, if your house is programmed to wake you up at 5am, what will you do when you’re away or sleeping in? Be sure to change the default user name and password when setting up components, so you’re not exposed to hackers or other threats.

Tulbagh Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGES: TULBAGH TOURISM & ISTOCK
A
beautiful bowl-shaped valley, with fertile farmlands watered by mountain streams from the Witzenberg, Winterhoek and Obiqua mountain ranges embracing it on three sides, Tulbagh is the perfect setting for a weekend escape or a peaceful rural lifestyle. It’s far enough from Cape Town to feel away from it all, but at less than 90 minutes by car from town, a day trip is easy enough – especially if you can’t resist visiting for one of the annual festivals. The area's Christmas in Winter Festival (24 and 25 June) is especially appealing, with a dusting of snow on the mountain tops as a backdrop to the festivities, gluhwein, mince pies, sumptuous feasts and fun spilling over from historic Church Street to surrounding wine estates and the whole town for the weekend. Church Street itself represents the essence of Tulbagh over the ages,
with a series of original Cape Dutch houses – 32 national monuments – in one beautiful tree-lined street. These were painstakingly restored after a devastating earthquake in 1969. A stroll along the street, where you can visit the small museums and have lunch in one of the restaurants, is a must. Locals have re-established a community vegetable garden here too, which supplies several of the restaurants and residents with fresh organic produce. Once a predominantly farming community, Tulbagh has reinvented itself in the last two decades to become a friendly, welcoming destination and a picturesque wedding location, with a number of B&Bs, hotels, and self-catering cottages in the village and on surrounding wine estates and farms attracting locals and international visitors all year round. “Over the years I've seen changes and growth in the town,” says Carol Collins,
who moved to Tulbagh 20 years ago. “When I arrived, businesses such as banks and shops all closed over lunch. The town has become more cosmopolitan over the years, but the original charm is still here. Winter snow is a huge attraction, as well as summer cherry-picking, harvest with students, flowers in spring, weddings and weekend getaways.” Weekend visitors can relax over wine tastings, olive tastings and lazy lunches, enjoy a show at the Saronsberg Theatre, explore the pristine mountain scenery on horse-back, go mountain biking, or take long hikes in the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area. But the main attraction for residents and visitors is the peace and tranquillity of Tulbagh, where everyday life is defined by nature, from the cycles of the seasons, to the baking-hot summer days and crisp cold winter nights.
THINGS TO DO: • Go horse riding in the fynbos with Horse About or Tulbagh Horse Trails. • Enjoy a show at the Saronsberg Theatre. • Walk down historic Church Street and visit the museums. • Zip-line along 1,4km of slides in nearby Ceres. • Explore the area's many superb trails on a mountain bike. • Treat yourself to olive tasting at Oakhurst Olives or Waverley Hills.
